CUPERTINO, CA (TIP): Apple Inc. announced this week that Sabih Khan, a 30year veteran of the company, has been appointed Chief Operating Officer, effective later this month. He will succeed Jeff Williams, who is set to retire by the end of the year.

Khan, 58, joined Apple in 1995 after working at GE Plastics as an applications development engineer and key account technical leader. He has served as Senior Vice President of Operations since June 2019, overseeing Apple’s global supply chain, manufacturing, logistics, and supplier responsibility programs.
Apple CEO Tim Cook praised Khan as “a brilliant strategist” and “one of the central architects of Apple’s supply chain,” noting that his leadership has been instrumental in expanding Apple’s manufacturing footprint in the United States and advancing environmental sustainability initiatives.

His elevation comes as Apple navigates geopolitical challenges, including U.S.–China trade tensions and pressure to diversify manufacturing. In response, Apple plans to shift a substantial portion of iPhone production to India by next year.

State Department is firing more than 1,300 employees in downsizing plan

The move has come under strong criticism from current and former diplomats who say the cuts will degrade America’s standing in the world and curb U.S. soft power

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): The State Department is firing more than 1,300 employees via email on Friday as a part of the Trump administration’s plans to downsize government and cut back on “bloat.” The move has come under strong criticism from current and former diplomats who say the cuts will degrade America’s standing in the world and curb U.S. soft power. The department is sending layoff notices to more than 1,100 civil servants and 240 Foreign Service employees, according to an internal notice obtained by The Washington Post. Foreign Service officers will lose their jobs 120 days after they receive the notice and be placed on administrative leave during the interim period, the notice says. The separation period for most civil servants is 60 days.

Michael Rigas, the deputy secretary of state for management and resources, told staff on Thursday, July 10, that “every effort has been made to support our colleagues who are departing.” But uncertainty over the status of the plan has badly impacted morale at the department, with some of the workforce exasperated and embittered with the plans to fire people at a time when many were asked to work additional hours to assist U.S. citizens seeking to flee the Middle East amid Israel’s war with Iran.

One State Department employee, speaking like some others on the condition of anonymity to avoid professional reprisal, told The Post last month that the push exposed how the department’s leadership “either doesn’t appreciate or just doesn’t care” about its workforce.

  • Musk launches ‘America Party’ as feud with Trump escalates

Musk launches ‘America Party’ as feud with Trump escalates

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): The dispute between Republican President Donald Trump and his main campaign financier Elon Musk took another fractious turn on Saturday, July 5, when the space and automotive billionaire announced the formation of a new political party, saying Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax bill would bankrupt America. A day after asking his followers on his X platform whether a new US political party should be created, Musk declared in a post on Saturday that “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” he wrote.

The announcement from Musk comes after Trump signed his self-styled “big, beautiful” tax-cut and spending bill into law on Friday, which Musk fiercely opposed.

Musk, who became the world’s richest man thanks to his Tesla car company and his SpaceX satellite firm, spent hundreds of millions on Trump’s re-election and led the Department of Government Efficiency from the start of the president’s second term aimed at slashing government spending.

The first sign of investor dissatisfaction with Musk’s announcement followed later in the day. Investment firm Azoria Partners will postpone the listing of a Tesla exchange-traded fund, Azoria CEO James Fishback said in a post on X.

Fishback is asking Tesla’s board to clarify Musk’s political ambitions and said the new party undermines the confidence shareholders had that he would be focusing more on the company after leaving government service in May.

Musk said previously that he would start a new political party and spend money to unseat lawmakers who supported the bill.

Trump earlier this week threatened to cut off the billions of dollars in subsidies that Musk’s companies receive from the federal government.

Republicans have expressed concern that Musk’s on-again, off-again feud with Trump could hurt their chances to protect their majority in the 2026 midterm congressional elections.

Asked on X what was the one thing that made him go from loving Trump to attacking him, Musk said: “Increasing the deficit from an already insane $2T under Biden to $2.5T. This will bankrupt the country.” There was no immediate comment from Trump or the White House on Musk’s announcement.

The feud with Trump, often described as one between the world’s richest man and the world’s most powerful, has led to several precipitous falls in Tesla’s share price.

The stock soared after Trump’s November reelection and hit a high of more than $488 in December, before losing more than half of its value in April and closing last week out at $315.35.

Despite Musk’s deep pockets, breaking the Republican-Democratic duopoly will be a tall order, given that it has dominated American political life for more than 160 years, while Trump’s approval ratings in polls in his second term have generally held firm above 40%, despite often divisive policies.

Dallas Morning News Sold to Hearst, Staffers Respond to the Shock

The massive deal means that media titan Hearst will own four of Texas’ five largest daily newspapers.

DALLAS (TIP): The Dallas Morning News announced on Thursday morning that it is being bought by media giant Hearst. Judging from the responses some DMN staffers posted to social media following the announcement, the “merger,” as DMN calls it, wasn’t something many saw coming. According to an article posted beneath the top story on its website homepage, the sale includes the newspaper as well as Medium Giant, DallasNews Corp.’s “integrated creative marketing agency.”

“The deal was unanimously approved by the boards of directors from both companies and is expected to close in September or October,” the article states.

Once the deal is final, Hearst will own four of the five largest newspapers in Texas among its collection of nearly 30 newspapers. Heart acquired the Austin American-Statesman in February, and also owns the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News. Also in Texas, Hearst owns the Beaumont Enterprise, Midland Reporter-Telegram and Laredo Morning Times. That is a whole lot of daily Texas news going out under one company’s banner.

“Hearst Newspapers is committed to supporting The Dallas Morning News’ continued success through smart investments in their digital strategy, compelling journalism and expanded audience reach,” Jeff Johnson, president of Hearst Newspapers, said in a statement shared with the Morning News. “This move aligns squarely with our strategy of backing trusted, high-impact local media brands in growth markets.”

The Morning News wrote that DallasNews shareholders “will get $14.00 per share, which is 319% more than the July 9 closing price of $4.39. That puts the value of the company, Texas’ oldest continually operating company, at $74.9 million.”

The major news apparently surprised at least some of the local paper’s staffers, prompting social media responses from some of the outlet’s reporters.

  • Consider Aadhaar, EPIC, ration card as proof: SC to EC on Bihar rolls revision

Consider Aadhaar, EPIC, ration card as proof: SC to EC on Bihar rolls revision

NEW DELHI (TIP): The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Election Commission (EC) to consider Aadhaar, elector photo identity card (EPIC), and ration card as proof for voter registration in the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar.

The court referred to the EC’s submission that its list of 11 documents for verification of voters was not “exhaustive”. “Therefore, in our prima facie view, since the list [of documents] is not exhaustive, it would be in the interest of justice if the EC would also consider the following documents, Aadhaar, EPIC, issued by the EC itself, and ration card,” the court dictated in its order. A Bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi allowed the SIR in Bihar to “go on”. It did not pass any interim order of stay. The court listed the case for further hearing on July 28, prior to the publication of the draft electoral rolls in August.

The court said its judicial review of the SIR would focus on the EC’s power to undertake the exercise, the manner in which it was conducted, and the chosen timing, which, it described as “very short”. It noted that the revision in Bihar appeared nebulous — neither “summary” nor “special” as defined under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. “This issue is very important. It goes to the very roots of our democracy. It is about the right to vote,” Justice Dhulia observed. The EC objected to Aadhaar, stating it was a document for identity verification and not proof of citizenship. Aadhaar, it said, was also issued to non-citizens who were ordinarily resident at a place. “The Aadhaar Act clearly says it is not proof of citizenship. The EC cannot exalt the status of the Aadhaar,” senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for the commission, submitted. Justice Dhulia, however, remarked that Aadhaar was one of the primary identity documents, and the SIR was about establishing identity. “If I want a caste certificate, I show my Aadhaar. A document like Aadhaar, considered basic for getting other documents, is not part of the 11 documents? Caste certificate is one of the documents among the 11, but not Aadhaar? The entire exercise of SIR is about identity only. You want to know whether this person is A or B,” he said. Justice Bagchi concurred, stating that none of the 11 documents listed in the EC’s June 24 notification established citizenship. “They are all meant to prove your identity. Yet, you [EC] stridently oppose the inclusion of Aadhaar… You can do your work but do it in accordance with the mandate of law. The statute, Representation of the People Act, allows Aadhaar,” he said, addressing the EC, also represented by senior advocate K.K. Venugopal. Mr. Dwivedi urged the court to clarify that it would be at the Commission’s “discretion” to accept Aadhaar, EPIC or ration cards. Justice Dhulia responded that the court’s order was “clear”.

Mr. Dwivedi said the revision was necessary, as the last intensive revision in Bihar was in 2003. He said 60% of enumerations — around 5.5 crore — had already been completed, with half uploaded on the EC’s new digital platform, ECI Net. “For the first time, we have created ECI Net where the documents would be uploaded. This drive need not be repeated, except for adding names,” he said. The petitioners, represented by senior advocates Kapil Sibal, A.M. Singhvi, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, Shadan Farasat and Vrinda Grover, described the SIR as “citizenship screening” of vulnerable groups under the guise of voter registration. They argued that the EC had no jurisdiction to ascertain citizenship, which was the responsibility of the Union Home Ministry. Citing a Bihar government survey, Mr. Sibal submitted that 87% of the population had Aadhaar, while only 14% had matriculation certificates and 2% had passports. “This means a substantial portion of the population risk disenfranchisement despite having an Aadhaar,” he said. Justice Bagchi raised questions about the strict deadlines of the SIR process. “You say within 30 days citizens have to do this and another 30 days they have to do that… The timing is very short… Why is SIR so election-focused,” he asked. Mr. Sankaranarayanan questioned why the SIR, meant to be implemented nationwide, began in Bihar ahead of the election later this year. The sample enumeration form given with the SIR instructions on June 24 gives a column for the voter to give his or her Aadhaar number, but it is optional. However, Aadhaar has been actively used for voter enrolment in earlier elections.

The Manual on Electoral Rolls issued in March 2023 gives an elector the option of furnishing Aadhaar as both a proof of age and ordinary residence, two prerequisites for registration as a voter. Aadhaar linking with voter ID has, in fact, been looked at as a practical solution for tackling duplicate voters. It was in February 2015, that the EC first launched a pilot project to study the linking of Aadhaar with electoral rolls called the National Electoral Rolls Purification and Authentication Programme (NERPAP). It had linked more than 300 million voters in a span of three months. The Supreme Court halted this project through an interim order issued in August of that year on the issue of Right to Privacy, which is guaranteed under the Constitution, and created a three-prong test to assess whether a law violates this right. Following this order, the NERPAP exercise was discontinued. In an editorial, The Hindu said the Supreme Court’s pointed observations regarding Bihar’s ongoing revision of electoral rolls must be heeded by the EC.

“The court has reminded the EC that its mandate, under Article 324, is to facilitate democratic participation, and not to create obstacles,” it said. A ground report from Bihar highlights the hurdles people have been facing.

  • Trump announces 35% tariffs on Canada

Trump announces 35% tariffs on Canada

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): The United States will impose a tariff of 35 percent on goods imported from Canada starting Aug. 1, President Donald Trump said Thursday in a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on social media, injecting fresh turmoil into an already strained bilateral relationship.

The announcement marked a setback in Carney’s efforts to negotiate a new economic partnership with the United States ahead of his self-imposed July 21 deadline. Canadian officials have been seeking a deal that would lift tariffs already imposed by the U.S. In a social media post late Thursday, July 10, Carney said he would work toward a “revised” deadline.

“Throughout the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses,” the prime minister said. “We will continue to do so as we work towards the revised deadline of August 1.” Trump’s missive is the latest in a series of tariff announcements, delays and reversals that have created uncertainty in international trade for much of the year. On Monday, Trump threatened tariffs of between 25 percent and 40 percent on imports from 14 countries, including Japan and South Korea.

Few countries are more exposed to Trump’s tariffs than Canada, which sends more than three-quarters of its exports to the U.S. Since his return to the White House, Trump has put Canada in his crosshairs, imposing several sets of tariffs that are weighing on its economy and threatening to use “economic force” to annex the country.

In February, Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods — as well as those from Mexico — that went into effect the following month. Soon afterward, he exempted goods covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Canadian energy and potash were hit with a lower tariff of 10 percent.

Trump’s Thursday letter did not specify whether the exemption would continue to apply under the new tariff rate. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for clarification.

The new tariff rate is separate from those imposed or threatened on specific sectors, such as automobiles, copper, steel and aluminum, all of which the U.S. imports from Canada. Should Canada impose new tariffs on U.S. goods, then the U.S. will increase its tariffs that same amount added to the 35 percent rate, Trump said. Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on many U.S. goods, though it later rolled some of them back. Carney last month said he could adjust counter tariffs against U.S. steel and aluminum products “consistent with progress made” in the trade negotiations. He did not rule out retaliatory measures.

Trump again insisted that tariffs levied on Canada are a response to the flow of fentanyl into the U.S., though there is little evidence that traffickers are smuggling the drug across the northern border in significant quantities. Less than 1 percent of fentanyl seized at or near U.S. land borders in the 2024 fiscal year came from Canada, according to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“If Canada works with us to stop the flow of fentanyl, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment,” Trump wrote. Canada has taken several steps to mollify Trump and address his concerns about fentanyl, even as it has stressed that the country is not a significant source of the drug. In December, the government unveiled a nearly $950 million plan to tighten security at the U.S.-Canada border and this year appointed a “Fentanyl Czar” to focus on the issue. Canadian officials have said they are not sure what more the Trump administration wants them to do.

“Canada has made vital progress to stop the scourge of fentanyl in North America,” Carney said in social media post Thursday. “We are committed to continuing to work with the United States to save lives and protect communities in both our countries.”

Trump has listed several other — and, at times, contradictory — justifications for the tariffs on Canada. These include the U.S. trade deficit with its northern neighbor, which he frequently overstates by more than $100 billion, and the country’s supply management system for dairy. His letter to Carney mentioned both grievances.

Late last month, Canada rescinded a planned digital services tax on large tech companies that would have impacted firms such as Apple and Meta, after Trump called the levy a “blatant attack” on the U.S. and threatened to pull out of trade talks.

Carney, a former central banker, was elected prime minister in April. He cast himself as the person best placed to handle Trump and the dramatic rupture in bilateral ties spurred by the president’s tariffs and annexation threats, and promised an “elbows up” approach to dealing with Trump, a hockey term describing a method of protection from an opposing player.

  • BRICS Condemns US Tariff Plans Without Naming Trump

BRICS Condemns US Tariff Plans Without Naming Trump

Trump Threatens Additional 10% Tariff on Countries that go with BRICS Against American Interests

RIO DE JANEIRO (TIP): The BRICS bloc of developing nations on Sunday, July 6, condemned the increase of tariffs and attacks on Iran, but refrained from naming U.S. President Donald Trump. The group’s declaration, which also took aim at Israel’s military actions in the Middle East, also spared its member Russia from criticism and mentioned war-torn Ukraine just once.

The two-day summit was marked by the absence of two of its most powerful members. China’s President Xi Jinping did not attend a BRICS summit for the first time since he became his country’s leader in 2012. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who spoke via videoconference, continues to mostly avoid traveling abroad due to an international arrest warrant issued after Russia invaded Ukraine.

In an indirect swipe at the U.S., the group’s declaration raised “serious concerns” about the rise of tariffs which it said were “inconsistent with WTO (World Trade Organization) rules.” The BRICS added that those restrictions “threaten to reduce global trade, disrupt global supply chains, and introduce uncertainty.”

Trump, in a post on his social media platform late Sunday, said any country that aligns itself with what he termed “the Anti-American policies of BRICS” would be levied an additional 10% tariff.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who hosted the summit, criticized NATO’s decision to hike military spending by 5% of GDP annually by 2035. That sentiment was later echoed in the group’s declaration.

“It is always easier to invest in war than in peace,” Lula said at the opening of the summit, which is scheduled to continue on Monday.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was expected to attend the summit before the attacks on his country in June, sent his foreign minister Abbas Araghchi to the meeting in Rio.

The group’s declaration criticized the attacks on Iran without mentioning the U.S. or Israel, the two nations that conducted them.

In his speech, Araghchi told leaders he had pushed for every member of the United Nations to condemn Israel strongly. He added Israel and the U.S. should be accountable for rights violations. The Iranian foreign minister said the aftermath of the war “will not be limited” to one country.

“The entire region and beyond will be damaged,” Araghchi said. BRICS leaders expressed “grave concern” for the humanitarian situation in Gaza, called for the release of all hostages, a return to the negotiating table and reaffirmed their commitment to the two-state solution.

Later, Iran’s Araghchi said in a separate statement on messaging app Telegram that his government had expressed its reservation regarding a two-state solution in a note, saying it will not work “just as it has not worked in the past.”

Also on Telegram, Russia’s foreign ministry in another statement named the U.S. and Israel, and condemned the “unprovoked military strikes” against Iran.

The group’s 31-page declaration mentions Ukraine just once, while condemning “in the strongest terms” recent Ukrainian attacks on Russia.

“We recall our national positions concerning the conflict in Ukraine as expressed in the appropriate fora, including the U.N. Security Council and the U.N. General Assembly,” the group said.

João Alfredo Nyegray, an international business and geopolitics professor at the Pontifical Catholic University in Parana, said the summit could have played a role in showing an alternative to an unstable world, but won’t do so.

“The withdrawal of Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the uncertainty about the level of representation for countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are confirming the difficulty for the BRICS to establish themselves as a cohesive pole of global leadership,” Nyegray said. “This moment demands high level articulation, but we are actually seeing dispersion.”

While Lula advocated on Sunday for the reform of Western-led global institutions, Brazil aimed to avoid becoming the target of higher tariffs.

Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs against the bloc if they take any moves to undermine the dollar. Last year, at the summit hosted by Russia in Kazan, the Kremlin sought to develop alternatives to U.S.-dominated payment systems which would allow it to dodge Western sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022

Brazil decided to focus on less controversial issues in the summit, such as promoting trade relations between members and global health, after Trump returned to the White House, said Ana Garcia, a professor at the Rio de Janeiro Federal Rural University.

“Brazil wants the least amount of damage possible and to avoid drawing the attention of the Trump administration to prevent any type of risk to the Brazilian economy,” Garcia said.

BRICS was founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but the group last year expanded to include Indonesia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates . With the new members, the bloc has 10 strategic partner countries, a category created at last year’s summit that includes Belarus, Cuba and Vietnam.

That rapid expansion led Brazil to put housekeeping issues — officially termed institutional development — on the agenda to better integrate new members and boost internal cohesion.

Despite notable absences, the summit is important for attendees, especially in the context of instability provoked by Trump’s tariff wars, said Bruce Scheidl, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo’s BRICS study group.

“The summit offers the best opportunity for emerging countries to respond, in the sense of seeking alternatives and diversifying their economic partnerships,” Scheidl said.

Earlier on Sunday, a pro-Israel non-profit placed dozens of rainbow flags on Ipanema beach to protest Iran’s policies regarding LGBT+ people. On Saturday, human rights group Amnesty International protested Brazil’s plans for offshore oil drilling near the mouth of the Amazon River.

For Lula, the summit is a welcome pause from a difficult domestic scenario, marked by a drop in popularity and conflict with Congress. The meeting was also an opportunity to advance climate negotiations and commitments on protecting the environment before November’s COP 30 climate talks in the Amazonian city of Belem.

  • Now, Kapil Sharma’s new café in Surrey comes under attack

Now, Kapil Sharma’s new café in Surrey comes under attack

SURREY (TIP): Renowned laughter man Kapil Sharma is a worried man now. His newly set up Kap’s Café in Surrey, British Columbia, has been in the news since Wednesday, July 9 night. It was the target of a violent gun attack, as eight to nine bullets were fired, allegedly with an automatic weapon, to send shock waves not only to Kapil Sharma and his family but also to his endless stream of fans and followers. The café was recently inaugurated quietly in a soft launch attended by Kapil and his wife, Ginni Chatrath.

Since an activist of the dreaded Babbar Khalsa International, a Sikh militant organization, is said to have claimed responsibility for the incident, it may have added to the worries and problems of Kapil Sharma. Harjit Singh Laddi, a wanted militant owing allegiance to Babbar Khalsa International, along with another individual, Toofan Singh, while claiming responsibility through a video clip, wants Kapil Sharma to offer a public apology for certain derogatory comments he allegedly made against Nihang Sikhs, also known as “Guru ki Ladli Fauj” (Beloved army of the Guru), in one of his shows.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in India lists Harjit Singh Laddi as a wanted terrorist and BKI (Babbar Khalsa International) operative overseas.

In a video shared online, Laddi alleged that the attack was triggered by remarks Kapil Sharma allegedly made against Nihang Sikhs during one of his comedy shows. Intriguingly, the video of Harjit Singh Laddi did not explicitly mention BKI. Both Laddi and Toofan Singh want Kapil Sharma to issue a public apology, failing which “the matter could escalate further.”

The duo also claimed that repeated attempts were made to contact Kapil Sharma’s manager, which were ignored, prompting them to carry out this act to “get his attention.”

Media reports and initial inputs suggest that Harjit Singh Laddi, along with Kulbir Singh Sidhu, has been allegedly linked to multiple extortion, murder, and gang-related activities in Canada and India, including the 2024 murder of a BSP leader in Punjab’s Nangal. Both men operate under the cover of BKI and have been accused of several targeted killings and attempted assassinations.

Of late, there has been a surge in gang-linked terror attacks in various Canadian cities, including Surrey (British Columbia), Brampton (Ontario), and Calgary (Alberta). Several Sikh organizations have been accusing Indian agents of masterminding these attacks. They further amplify concerns over rising violence and cross-border terrorism. The recent attack on Kapil Sharma’s Café, however, appears to be ideological rather than driven by extortion.

Those who owned up to the firing claim the attack was not to demand money but to demand a public apology, as they felt “offended” by what they termed as “insulting comments” made by Kapil Sharma about the Nihang community. The exact content or context of those remarks remains unclear.

Damien Kurek paves the way for Pierre to enter the House of Commons

    By Prabhjot Singh

TORONTO (TIP): Decks have been cleared for the leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, to return to the House of Commons. The Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has already announced that a by-election to Battle River-Crowfoot in Alberta will be held on August 18. A by-election has been necessitated as Conservative MP Damien Kurek stepped down so Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre could have a chance to hold a seat in Parliament.

Elections Canada has already initiated the process of holding the by-election on August 18.

It is pertinent to mention here that in Canada, dates of federal elections and related by-elections are decided by the prime minister and not Elections Canada, a statutory body that oversees the conduct of federal elections.

Since the Leader of the Opposition, Pierre Poilievre, lost in the recently concluded federal elections, Prime Minister Mark Carney, in a sporting gesture, announced that he would not delay holding a by-election to facilitate the return of the Leader of the Opposition to Parliament.

The Prime Minister could delay a by-election to a maximum of 180 days. But in this case, the by-election was declared immediately after the sitting MP Damien Kurek stepped down at the end of the preliminary session of the new House of Commons on June 17.

Meanwhile, Conservative MP Damien Kurek has announced his new role with a strategic communications company.

Kurek, who was re-elected in the riding of Battle River—Crowfoot, offered to step down on May 2 after Poilievre lost his riding of Carleton during the federal election.

Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, while going full throttle on his electioneering, has announced that he would not accept severance pay that is available to members of Parliament who lose their seats. Poilievre lost his Carleton riding in Ottawa in the recent federal election, which he had held for 20 years.

Poilievre’s MP salary was $209,800, according to the parliamentary data, and he is also entitled to $99,900 as leader of the Official Opposition. The House of Commons rules mean Poilievre is also entitled to 50 per cent of his MP salary, which would be around $150,000.

“Former Members who are not eligible for an immediate pension may be entitled to a severance allowance equal to 50 per cent of the sessional allowance and any additional annual salary payable to Members occupying certain offices (such as that of a Minister, House Leader, Whip, or Parliamentary Secretary),” says the House of Commons website. Accept any severance fee.

Pierre Poilievre, who is all set to return to the House of Commons as the Battle River–Crowfoot in Alberta is considered the safest Conservative seat, has decided not to accept any severance pay.

  • India not on first list of countries to get a new Canadian High Commissioner

India not on first list of countries to get a new Canadian High Commissioner

TORONTO (TIP): India did not figure in the list of countries where the new Liberal Government, headed by Mark Carney, announced the appointment of its new ambassadors and high commissioners. After a spat in bilateral relations late last year, both India and Canada had downsized their diplomatic corps.

Early this month, when Canada’s new Foreign Minister Anta Indira Anand embarked upon a tour of Japan and Malaysia, she announced a series of diplomatic appointments. The Liberal Government announced new ambassadors and high commissioners to more than 20 countries, including some in Asia and Africa, but India was missing from the list.

Late last month, when Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, to the G7 leaders’ summit in Alberta, an announcement was made that the two countries have decided to restore high commissioners in New Delhi and Ottawa.

Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced the new appointments. Expectations were that India would be given a priority after the prime ministers of India and Canada met on the sidelines of the G7 Alberta summit. Both India and Canada have been without high commissioners for more than six months now. The new list interestingly carries the name of the new Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Tarik Khan, a career diplomat. Also, Sri Lanka gets a new Canadian High Commissioner in Isabella Martin.

Anita Anand had announced the following diplomatic appointments:

Alexandre Bilodeau will become Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Tunisia. He will replace Lorraine Diguer. Anderson Blanc will be the new High Commissioner to the Republic of Mozambique, replacing Sara Nicholls.

Natalie Britton will, after replacing Tara Scheurwater, become the new Consul General in Istanbul (Republic of Türkiye). Sandra Choufani will be the ambassador to the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. She will replace Anderson Blanc. Christian DesRoches will be the new ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia. He will replace Ping Kitnikone. Ambra Dickie will replace Vicky Singmin to become Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Jakarta.

Stephen Doust has been named Ambassador to Mongolia. Mr. Doust will replace Sandra Choufani. The new ambassador to Lebanon will be Gregory Galligan.

Alison Grant will become Ambassador to the Republic of Austria and Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna.

Marie-Claude Harvey will become High Commissioner in the Republic of Cameroon.

Patrick Hébert will become Ambassador to the Republic of Finland.

Jean-Dominique Ieraci will become Ambassador to the Republic of Peru.

Tarik Khan will become High Commissioner in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Craig Kowalik will become Ambassador to the Republic of Ecuador.

Philippe Lafortune will become Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. Jean-Paul Lemieux will become Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation.

Isabelle Martin will become High Commissioner in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

Karim Morcos will become Ambassador to the State of Qatar.

James Nickel will become Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Tara Scheurwater will become Ambassador to the State of Kuwait.

Nicolas Simard will become Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Joshua Tabah will become High Commissioner in the Republic of Kenya and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme and to the United Nations Environment Programme.

Kent Vachon will become Ambassador to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

Affordable apartments proposed near southern Dallas logistics hub

The developer plans to put housing in an area with warehousing and manufacturing jobs

DALLAS (TIP): A Kentucky developer is planning to build a fully affordable apartment complex near one of the city’s logistics hubs. LDG Development, which is based in Kentucky and operates an office in Dallas, is planning to restrict the 330-unit Gateway at Trinity Forest apartment complex for residents making 60% of the Dallas’ area median income.

River Inn, Camp Mystic and others to face probes and litigation, say legal experts. That figure is around $70,380 for a family of four, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In February, Dallas City Council approved the developer’s plan to apply for 4% housing subsidies with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs.

“We have to wait to break ground until the application is approved, so we’ll submit it in a month or two. It’s a 75-90-day process,” said Jake Brown, development manager for LDG’s Dallas office. “Assuming we get through it successfully, we’ll be ready to start construction around December 2025.”

While project costs have not been officially revealed, a state filing puts a tentative $100,000,000 price tag on the development, which will be located at 2050 Dowdy Ferry Road.

“As a whole, the location of the development is fantastic since it gets direct access to I-20,” Brown said.

The community is located near the Union Pacific rail hub along Interstate 45 and several large logistics warehouses boasting footprints of more than 1 million square feet.

Last quarter, nearly 600,000 square feet of new space was delivered in the area according to research from global real estate brokerage JLL, and nearly 2 million square feet have been absorbed this year. “Not much has happened with new housing stock in the area. There are many warehousing and manufacturing jobs, so it fits perfectly with what we’re planning,” Brown said.

The complex includes 39 one-bedroom, 147 two-bedroom, 132 three-bedroom and 12 four-bedroom floor plans featuring granite counters, hardwood floors and stainless steel appliances.

Amenities at the community will include a clubhouse, children’s playground, pool, fitness center, yoga studio and dog park.

The community is also located across from trails and a lake at Great Trinity Forest Gateway and Horse Trail.

Khalistani terrorist Happy Passia, wanted for 14 grenade attacks in Punjab, to be extradited from US soon

Indian security agencies have received confirmation from the US authorities approving his deportation.

WASHINGTON, D.C./CHANDIGARH (TIP): Harpreet Singh, also known as Happy Passia, a notorious gangster-turned-terrorist with links to Pakistan’s ISI and the Khalistani terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), is set to be extradited from the United States to India. According to sources, Indian security agencies have received confirmation from the US authorities approving his deportation.

The Punjab Police had submitted a formal request for Passia’s extradition to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Passia is accused of orchestrating at least 14 grenade attacks across Punjab, targeting police stations, religious places, and residences of public figures.

After entering the US illegally in 2021 through human trafficking routes, Passia continued to coordinate terror activities from there, using burner phones to avoid detection. His arrest by the FBI in Sacramento in April 2025 was a major success for both Indian and American security agencies.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had placed a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information leading to his capture, highlighting his high-profile status in India’s fight against terrorism.

  • Amanda Anisimova, Iga Swiatek to face off in Wimbledon final

Amanda Anisimova, Iga Swiatek to face off in Wimbledon final

London (TIP)- After two very contrasting semifinals, American Amanda Anisimova and Poland’s Iga Swiatek will face each other in the Wimbledon final on Saturday, July 12. Anisimova came through a long and grueling match against world No. 1 and fellow big-hitter Aryna Sabalenka, triumphing 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 after a tense and often unpredictable deciding set.
The upset victory is a landmark moment in Anisimova’s career, coming 18 months after she returned from an extended break to prioritize her mental health. That time away from the sport will now seem worth it.
The 23-year-old has played some of the best tennis of her career at Wimbledon, much of which was on display against Sabalenka.
For Swiatek, it was a different story. She needed just an hour and 12 minutes – less than half the time of the first semifinal – to cruise to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Belinda Bencic.
But like Anisimova, the five-time grand slam winner is also an unlikely finalist having historically toiled on grass courts, her game much more suited to the clay of Roland-Garros.
Something, however, has clicked for Swiatek at this year’s tournament, and against Anisimova she has the advantage of having played in five previous grand slam finals – winning them all.
Needless to say, it will be a fascinating contest when both players return to Centre Court on Saturday with a first Wimbledon title on the line.
Given her incredible achievement, Amanda Anisimova was in a remarkably relaxed mood during her post-match press conference.
Just as the media session began, Iga Swiatek booked her place in Saturday’s Wimbledon final and Anisimova said she was looking forward to testing herself against the Polish player.
The pair have not played against each other on the senior tour, last playing when they were both juniors.
“Iga is such an unbelievable player and she’s also been an inspiration to me. Her work ethic and all of her achievements have been really inspiring,” she said.
“I’m sure it’ll be an amazing match. Getting to compete against an unbelievable player again is going to be super special. Hopefully, I can bring some high quality tennis and make it a battle out there.
“But I’m just gonna go out and enjoy every moment and try to not think about what’s on the line.”
Anisimova also spoke about how important her prolonged break from tennis was back in 2023, when she was able to prioritize her mental health.
“A lot of people told me that you would never make it to the top again if you take so much time away from the game,” she said. “And that was a little hard to digest, because I did want to come back and still achieve a lot.
“So just me being able to prove that you can get back to the top if you prioritize yourself, that’s been incredibly special to me.”
Coming into this year’s Wimbledon, few would have earmarked Iga Swiatek as a potential finalist, even with her status as a five-time grand slam winner.
A clay-court specialist with four French Open titles to her name, Swiatek has struggled on grass throughout her career, only once advancing beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon prior to this year.
Moreover, she has struggled for form of late, failing to add to her 22 WTA titles since her French Open victory in 2024. But, as the Pole said herself after the impressive win against Belinda Bencic, tennis can always finds a way to surprise you.

  • Djokovic battles past Cobolli to reach record 14th semifinal

Djokovic battles past Cobolli to reach record 14th semifinal

Novak Djokovic won a testing battle against Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday to reach a record 14th men’s Wimbledon semi-final, which will be a blockbuster clash against world number one Jannik Sinner. The Serb, chasing a historic 25th Grand Slam singles crown, was given the royal seal of approval by Britain’s Queen Camilla before his 6-7 (6/8), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 win on Centre Court.
Djokovic was pushed hard by the Italian 22nd seed but ultimately had too much for the 23-year-old, who had never previously been beyond the third round of a major.
The sixth seed prepared for the contest by meeting Britain’s Queen Camilla, the wife of King Charles III, who said she was keeping her “fingers crossed” for his match.
Camilla watched 38-year-old Djokovic from the Royal Box, along with British actor Hugh Grant.
Cobolli showed early intent, mixing up his play with drop shots and heavy groundstrokes from his flashing orange racquet and unsettling his illustrious opponent.
Djokovic, who has reached every Wimbledon final since 2018, served for the first set at 5-3 but the Italian broke back and won the ensuing tie-break.
Cobolli, who has claimed titles in Bucharest and Hamburg this year, next had to answer the question of whether he could sustain his level against the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
But it was a different story in the second set as Djokovic broke twice to level the match in the evening sunshine.
The pair swapped service breaks early in the third set but Djokovic pounced again in the 11th game and thundered an ace as he took control of the match.
The fourth set was tight but Cobolli failed to put away a simple winner at the net in the ninth game.

Root lifts England to 251-4 on tense day at Lord’s

London (TIP)- Joe Root’s patient unbeaten 99 led England to 251-4 on an attritional and compelling first day of the third test against India at Lord’s on Thursday, July 10. With the series level at 1-1 after two high-scoring matches, England won the toss in good batting conditions but they lost Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley cheaply and with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah back in their attack India sensed a big chance.
Root and Ollie Pope, however, adopted a risk-free approach, a far cry from the aggressive Bazball style of cricket England have adopted in recent years, to rebuild the innings, and Ben Stokes made 39 not out to leave the match finely poised.
“We want to be a team that is positive and entertaining, but we want to play to the situation,” Pope said.
“Our order is pretty fast scoring on our good days, we all know we can score hundreds off 120 balls, but we need to dig in off this sort of surface.”
Earlier, Stokes won the toss under clear skies and would have expected his top order to take full advantage.
India won the second test by 336 runs to level the series without Bumrah and he bowled a probing opening spell as the touring side rode the momentum of their excellent performance at Edgbaston.
Crawley drove Akash Deep sweetly to the cover boundary before greeting Mohammed Siraj to the attack with another crisp hit through the off side but neither he nor Duckett looked comfortable on a slow pitch.
Immediately after the drinks interval, Nitish Kumar Reddy struck in his first over when Duckett fell for 23, playing a loose stroke to a ball down the leg side and feathering a catch to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
