MONROE, NJ / NEW DELHI (TIP):  The Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), under its national leadership and in collaboration with the IPA Punjab State Branch, has announced the institution of the “Professor Harkishan Singh Research Excellence Award,” a prestigious annual national honor recognizing outstanding contributions to pharmaceutical research, drug discovery, academic leadership, and service to the profession. The award commemorates Padma Shri Professor Emeritus Harkishan Singh, one of India’s most distinguished pharmaceutical scientists, educators, and historians.

Professor Harkishan Singh’s legacy spans decades of excellence in research, education, and scholarship. A PhD from Banaras Hindu University and recipient of honorary doctorates from leading institutions in India and the United States, he authored over 350 publications, including 19 books, and held 14 patents, notably contributing to the development of Candocuronium Iodide (HS-310). He played a pioneering role in establishing National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), India’s premier institute for pharmaceutical education and research, and was internationally recognized through his election to the Académie Internationale d’Histoire de la Pharmacie.

The inaugural presentation of the award is scheduled during the 75th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress in December 2026 in New Delhi, an event expected to draw national and global participation, with the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India anticipated as the Chief Guest. The award is envisioned as a lifetime national recognition that will inspire excellence and innovation across the pharmaceutical sciences.

As part of this initiative, IPA and associated partners are inviting participation from global pharmaceutical manufacturers, academic institutions, research organizations, and alumni connected to Prof. Singh’s legacy. To ensure the award’s continuity, an endowment fund is being established, with invitations extended to industry, institutions, and individuals to contribute and support this national initiative.

This landmark initiative underscores India’s commitment to advancing drug discovery, strengthening API innovation, and positioning the country as a global leader in pharmaceutical research and development.
