Undead Arts with the New Jersey Symphony will present a reimagined production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” on May 2 and 3, 2026 at 3 pm at The Harborside Atrium (210 Hudson St, Jersey City, NJ 07302).
From the creators of Jersey City’s beloved Zombie Opera, this family-friendly, 90-minute production transports Mozart’s timeless masterpiece to the mysterious New Jersey Pine Barrens. Told through the eyes of Jersey City youth, audiences will step into the iconic Harborside Atrium – with its lush greenery and stunning skylight – and enter a magical world of spirits, witches, and the infamous Jersey Devil.
The production features world-class musicians from the New Jersey Symphony Chamber Players led by New Jersey Symphony’s Colton Conducting Fellow Gregory D. McDaniel, a cast of international opera singers, and a youth ensemble drawn from Jersey City public schools and the surrounding area.
Undead Arts believes every child deserves a front-row seat to imagination. All children under 18 attend free of charge, ensuring that cost or circumstance never stands in the way of creativity and joy.
The performance is produced by Undead Arts founders Molly Dunn, Katy Gardiner, and Catriona Rubenis-Stevens, directed by Rubenis-Stevens, art direction by Gardiner and a reimagined story and script by Undead Arts, and a modern English translation penned by opera lyricist Bea Goodwin.
CONCERTS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
New Jersey Symphony and Undead Arts collaborated on a Concerts for Young People version of “The Magic Flute” at multiple locations throughout the state, including
- Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway on Wed, March 18, at 10 am
- Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood on Thu, March 19, at 10 am
- New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on Tue, March 24, at 10 am
New Jersey Symphony Concerts for Young People is a program that supports and enhances classroom learning. The concerts are aligned with New Jersey State Standards and created specifically for students in grades 3–5. Each program features an engaging host and an interactive performance experience. Teachers receive a comprehensive learning package that includes classroom resources, audio clips, presentation slides, and other materials to supplement instruction before and after the concert. The New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra will perform two concerts (details below) in one day on May 3, 2026 at the Montclair State University.
The New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra, coached by New Jersey Symphony musicians, gives qualified middle and high school students — especially Black and Latino youth in the Greater Newark area — unparalleled opportunities to achieve personal and musical excellence. These concerts celebrate a season of accomplishment with the young musicians of the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra, with a special tribute to the graduating Class of 2026!
