BUCHAREST (TIP): President of Republic of India Droupadi Murmu arrived to a warm welcome in Bucharest, Romania on July 23, 2026, on a historic three-day State Visit. This marks the final leg of her three-nation European tour after visiting Moldova and North Macedonia.
The diplomatic visit is highly significant as it is the first time an Indian president has visited Romania in over three decades. Her official engagements continued through today, July 24, 2026.
President Murmu was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Cotroceni Palace by Romanian President Nicușor Dan. The two leaders held extensive delegation-level talks to expand bilateral partnerships.
High-Level Meetings
President Murmu met with interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, Senate President Mircea Abrudean, and Chamber of Deputies President Sorin Grindeanu to enhance strategic dialogue.
Economic Cooperation
Both nations agreed to a strategic plan to double bilateral trade over the next three years. President Murmu also addressed the India-Romania Business Forum today to foster corporate partnerships.

Agreements and MoUs Signed
To formalize their growing partnership, India and Romania exchanged several key agreements, which included a formal Cooperation Program for joint research and development, a Joint Declaration of Intent to enhance sports collaboration, an agreement for establishment of an Indian Studies Chair at the University of Bucharest, backed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
India announced it will double the number of training slots for Romanian professionals under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program.
Looking forward, both leaders announced that the year 2028—marking the 80th anniversary of India-Romania diplomatic relations—will be celebrated as the “India–Romania Year of Innovation”.
