Ambassador of India visits Satu Mare, Maramureș, Sălaj, Sibiu, Alba, and Bihor Counties to Strengthen India-Romania Regional and Academic Partnerships

Ambassador of India meets with dignitaries of County Council and Municipality of Satu Mare

BUCHAREST (TIP): Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, Ambassador of India to Romania, undertook an official tour of northwestern and central Romania, visiting Satu Mare; Baia Mare in Maramureș County; Zalău in Sălaj County; Sibiu; Alba Iulia in Alba County; and Oradea in Bihor County.

The tour included high-level engagements with regional and local authorities, as well as leading academic institutions, reaffirming the shared commitment of India and Romania to deepen bilateral cooperation at both national and regional levels. Discussions focused on expanding collaboration in trade, investment, tourism, culture, innovation, and higher education, while highlighting the growing importance of regional partnerships and people-to-people exchanges.

Expanding Regional Cooperation in Satu Mare

In Satu Mare, the Ambassador met Mr. Pataki Csaba, President of the County Council; Mr. Altfatter Tamás Ferenc, Prefect of the County; and Mr. Kereskényi Gábor, Mayor of Satu Mare. Discussions focused on strengthening regional engagement and identifying new opportunities for institutional cooperation, economic partnerships, and people-to-people exchanges. The local leadership highlighted Satu Mare’s strategic location, dynamic business environment, and potential to attract Indian investment in manufacturing, logistics, tourism, and innovation.

The Ambassador welcomed the County’s interest in expanding cooperation with India and emphasized the growing momentum in India–Romania relations. Both sides discussed closer collaboration in trade, education, culture, and innovation, including enhanced interaction among businesses, academic institutions, and local communities.

Promoting Heritage and Economic Partnerships in Maramureș

In Baia Mare, the Ambassador met Mr. Gabriel Valer Zetea, President of the Maramureș County Council; Mr. Rudolf Stauder, Prefect of the County; and Mr. Ioan Doru Dăncuș, Mayor of Baia Mare. The discussions focused on strengthening regional cooperation, expanding economic engagement, exploring investment opportunities, and promoting tourism through Maramureș’s rich cultural heritage and natural attractions. The two sides also considered cooperation in culture, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

The Ambassador expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by the local authorities and welcomed their interest in deepening ties with India. Traditional gifts were exchanged as a symbol of the longstanding friendship and mutual respect between the two countries.

Building Partnerships for Shared Growth in Sălaj

In Zalău, the Ambassador met Mr. Dinu Iancu-Sălăjanu, President of the Sălaj County Council; Mr. Cristian-Claudiu Bîrsan, Prefect of Sălaj County; and Mr. Florin Florian, Mayor of Zalău. The discussions focused on enhanced regional cooperation, particularly in investment, tourism, and cultural exchanges. Both sides explored opportunities to expand economic engagement and institutional partnerships, while encouraging closer collaboration among businesses, educational institutions, and local communities.

The Ambassador welcomed the local authorities’ interest in closer ties with India and highlighted the role of regional cooperation in complementing the broader bilateral partnership. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to initiatives that support sustainable economic development, cultural understanding, and enduring people-to-people connections.

Strengthening Municipal Partnerships in Sibiu

In Sibiu, the Ambassador met Mr. Paul Kuttesch, Vice President of the Sibiu County Council; Ms. Andra-Maria Albu, Subprefect of Sibiu County; and Mr. Helmut Lerner, Deputy Mayor of Sibiu. Their discussions focused on investment, innovation, tourism, sustainable urban development, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. The Ambassador noted Sibiu’s vibrant economic environment, rich cultural heritage, and strong international outlook, underlining its potential as a partner for deeper bilateral engagement.

Advancing Tourism and Institutional Dialogue in Alba Iulia

In Alba Iulia, the Ambassador met Mr. Ion Dumitrel, President of the Alba County Council; Mr. Nicolae Albu, Prefect of Alba County; and Mr. Gabriel Codru Pleșa, Mayor of Alba Iulia. The discussions addressed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in investment, tourism, cultural exchange, local economic development, innovation, and education. The Ambassador highlighted Alba Iulia’s historical heritage, growing economic potential, and strategic importance as a regional hub. Both sides discussed ways to promote business partnerships, strengthen engagement between local stakeholders and Indian companies, and expand people-to-people connections.

Concluding the Regional Tour in Oradea

The regional tour concluded in Oradea, where the Ambassador met Mr. Horea Florian Abrudan, Vice President of the Bihor County Council; Mr. Marcel Daniel Dragoș, Prefect of Bihor County; and Mr. Teofil Filimon, Deputy Mayor of Oradea. The discussions focused on investment, economic partnerships, tourism, innovation, and cultural exchange. The Ambassador appreciated Oradea’s dynamic development, strategic importance, architectural heritage, and potential as a center for regional cooperation. Both sides explored closer collaboration among local authorities, business communities, and institutions in India and Romania, including in sustainable urban development, education, technology, tourism, and cultural cooperation.

Expanding Academic Cooperation at the University of Oradea

The Ambassador also visited the University of Oradea, where he met Prof. univ. dr. habil. Constantin Bungău, Rector of the University of Oradea; Prof. univ. dr. habil. Gabriel-Valentin Bendea, Vice-Rector for Academic Management; and Prof. univ. dr. Sanda-Monica Filip, Vice-Rector for Research Management. The discussions focused on strengthening India–Romania academic cooperation and identifying new opportunities in higher education, research, innovation, and student exchanges. The Ambassador appreciated the University’s contribution to the regional academic landscape and emphasized the vital role of universities in building lasting connections between India and Romania. Both sides exchanged views on institutional partnerships, joint research initiatives, academic mobility, and stronger links between universities and research communities.
