BUCHAREST (TIP): The Ambassador of India to Romania, Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, undertook a series of engagements with Romania’s regional leadership on 17 and 22 September 2026, meeting County Council Presidents, Prefects and Mayors of different municipalities to strengthen India-Romania relations at the regional and grassroots levels.

The engagements focused on translating the strong bilateral relationship into concrete opportunities for trade, investment, business partnerships and people-to-people connections, with particular attention to linking Indian companies and institutions with Romania’s regions and municipalities.

Building on the Momentum of the Hon’ble President of India’s Visit

The engagements followed the State Visit of the Hon’ble President of India to Romania in July 2026, which provided fresh impetus to bilateral relations. During the visit, India and Romania committed to doubling bilateral trade within two years. The Ambassador emphasised that achieving this objective would require stronger connections not only between national institutions, but also among businesses, regional administrations, municipalities and communities. Such engagement can help identify concrete projects, facilitate investment and create new business and development partnerships.

Expanding Trade and Investment

Discussions highlighted the economic potential of Romania’s regions and opportunities for Indian companies to contribute to regional development through investment, technology, manufacturing, infrastructure, agriculture, tourism and services. At the same time, Romanian companies and investors were encouraged to explore opportunities in India. Greater interaction between businesses and regional authorities can facilitate investment, strengthen supply chains and create new avenues for two-way trade.

The Ambassador also highlighted Romania’s strategic location, infrastructure and access to the wider European market, including the opportunities arising from the India–EU Free Trade Agreement. Stronger India-Romania economic linkages can position Romania as an important partner and gateway for Indian businesses seeking to expand their presence in the European Union.

Strengthening People-to-People Connections

The engagements underscored that a strong economic partnership is complemented by deeper people-to-people ties. Greater exchanges among municipalities, universities, educational and cultural institutions, businesses and professional communities can build lasting connections and strengthen mutual understanding between the peoples of India and Romania.

The Ambassador reaffirmed India’s commitment to working with Romania’s national, regional and local leadership to translate the strong bilateral relationship into practical partnerships that benefit businesses, communities and people.
