  • U.N. top court orders Israel to open more land crossings for aid into Gaza

U.N. top court orders Israel to open more land crossings for aid into Gaza

THE HAGUE (TIP): The top United Nations court on March 28 ordered Israel to take measures including opening more land crossings to allow food, water, fuel and other supplies into Gaza to tackle crippling shortages in the war-ravaged enclave. The International Court of Justice issued two new so-called provisional measures in a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of acts of genocide in its military campaign launched after the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas. Israel stringently denies it is committing genocide and says its military campaign is self-defense.

The order came after South Africa sought more provisional measures, including a ceasefire, citing starvation in Gaza. Israel urged the court not to issue new orders.
In its legally binding order, the court told Israel to take “all necessary and effective measures to ensure, without delay, in full co-operation with the United Nations, the unhindered provision at scale by all concerned of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance” including food, water, fuel and medical supplies.

It also ordered Israel to immediately ensure “that its military does not commit acts which constitute a violation of any of the rights of the Palestinians in Gaza as a protected group under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, including by preventing, through any action, the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian assistance.”

The court told Israel to report back in a month on its implementation of the orders.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry had no immediate comment on the order.

In a written response earlier this month to South Africa’s request for more measures, Israel said that claims by South Africa in its request were “wholly unfounded in fact and law, morally repugnant, and represent an abuse both of the Genocide Convention and of the Court itself.”

The court said in its order that “Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine, as noted in the Order of 26 January 2024, but that famine is setting in, with at least 31 people, including 27 children, having already died of malnutrition and dehydration according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.” The world court said that earlier orders imposed on Israel after landmark hearings in South Africa’s case, “do not fully address the consequences arising from the changes in the situation” in Gaza.

  • Congress must do its part to urge Indian govt to correct its course, says US lawmaker

Congress must do its part to urge Indian govt to correct its course, says US lawmaker

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): The US Congress must do its part to urge the Indian government to correct the course, and reconsider policies and laws, including counter-terrorism laws that are “inconsistent” with the obligations India has acquired through its ratification of key human rights treaties, an influential American lawmaker said Thursday, March 21. On April 19, multi-phase general elections will kick off in India to determine the country’s political direction for the next five years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third term, said Congressman James McGovern, Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, during a hearing on human rights in India.

“I’m one of those people who think that friends should tell each other hard truths. And India is a friend, and it is truly important to the US that India prospers. Yet there is a real risk that the tensions inherent in diverse societies could harden into dangerous conflicts and undermine India’s bright future if human rights abuses are not addressed,” McGovern said.

“The recent communal violence between ethnic Hindu and Christian communities in Manipur state is just but one example. Congress must do its part to urge the Indian government to correct course and reconsider policies and laws, including counter-terrorism laws that are inconsistent with the obligations India has acquired through its ratification of key human rights treaties,” he said.

In his remarks, Congressman Chris Smith, Co-Chair of the committee said that India is a country of particular concern. “I would put an H in there, huge particular concern for their egregious behavior. And Modi looks at what we do and say, they don’t care. That’s what the takeaway is by his government and by him personally. So I would encourage you to continue on,” he said.

“…And geopolitical concerns are enhanced, I believe, and the ability for us to have credibility. When we name countries on CPC and exclude egregious violators like India, what does that say to the other countries that are on the list? They look at us as hypocrites, and that’s not good either,” Smith said.

Carolyn Nash, Asia Advocacy Director, Amnesty International USA told lawmakers that the US government has recognized acts of transnational repression by the Government of India in Canada, which led to the assassination of an activist, as well as attempts here in the United States.

“The scale of oppression facing human rights defenders, both in and out of India, limits the availability of information about human rights violations committed by the Indian government, information that should influence how the US and other governments engage the Modi administration and how the private sector makes choices about investment,” she alleged.

“I can provide documentation of the government’s intensifying efforts to weaponize and codify into law intolerance and hate… Of particular concern are the expansion of the government’s abuse of vague and overbroad laws to shut down dissent, the increases in leaders’ use of hate speech and vilification of religious groups, and the recent rollout of the CAA and its discriminatory citizenship process, which could set the stage for millions to be deprived of citizenship,” Nash told the lawmakers.

“It is up to the US lawmakers to respond to these efforts, but the situation is worsening quickly, and it would be a mistake to imagine that the US and other concerned governments are geopolitically constrained from taking action. As India prepares for elections, we urge the US government, both members of Congress and administration officials, to communicate to the government of India that the US will condemn hateful rhetoric, legal harassment of civil society, and the targeting of religious and ethnic groups,” she said.

“The BJP party is eager to demonstrate to their base that they are delivering on supremacist promises. We know the lead up to the election will be a particularly dangerous time. We also know that Prime Minister Modi will be particularly sensitive to messages from other governments, and especially from senior leaders,” Nash said.

Waris Husain, Legal Advisor, American Bar Association Centre for Human Rights said the Congress needs to more forcefully urge the US President to speak directly to Prime Minister Modi about these concerns.

“It’s ultimately Prime Minister Modi who has the power to instruct his government, his party, about their toxic rhetoric and their abusive laws and policies and get them to drop this abusive form of governance. Members of Congress and President Biden need to acknowledge the scope and gravity of this situation,” he said.

“Biden’s embrace of Modi and reluctance to criticize the government for this situation will be understood by India to mean that the worsening conduct will have no consequences, and that cannot be the situation. So my last point would merely be that doing so, failing to say anything to Prime Minister Modi about this deteriorating situation sends a terrible message that the US government cares more about him, about Modi, as a leader, than about the people of India whom Modi was elected to serve,” Husain said.

  • ‘Electoral bond issue not just the biggest scam in India but the biggest scam in the world’ -Economist Prabhakar

‘Electoral bond issue not just the biggest scam in India but the biggest scam in the world’ -Economist Prabhakar

NEW DELHI (TIP): The Bharatiya Janata Party remains the major beneficiary of electoral bonds. The saffron party received the maximum funds through electoral bonds at ₹6,986.5 crore.
(Read Unveiling the Electoral Bonds Scam on page 2 )
The Supreme Court, in a ruling in February, struck down Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Centre’s Electoral Bond Scheme, which allowed for anonymous funding to political parties.

Renowned economist Parakala Prabhakar has projected that the “electoral bond issue” will cost the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) heavily. Prabhakar, the husband of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, told news channel Reporter TV, “The electoral bond issue will gain much more momentum than what it is today. Everybody is now understanding that it is not only the biggest scam in India but is the biggest scam in the world. Because of this issue, this government will be severely punished by the electorate”.

The BJP has remained the major beneficiary of the electoral bonds as per the data available on the official website of the Election Commission of India.

The BJP received the maximum funds via electoral bonds at ₹6,986.5 crore between April 12, 2019, and February 15, 2024, followed by West Bengal’s ruling party Trinamool Congress ( ₹1,397 crore), Congress ( ₹1,334 crore), and Bharat Rashtra Samithi ( ₹1,322 crore).

Many companies that faced regulatory action from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or Income Tax (IT) Department donated electoral bonds worth crores of rupees to ruling parties, show data submitted by the State Bank of India (SBI) to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Some companies which got huge government contracts purchased bonds for large amounts. Some new companies, which were incorporated during the COVID-19 pandemic, purchased bonds worth crores of rupees just months after starting out. Was the electoral bonds scheme used as an extortion tool?

According to civil society activists, 41 companies facing probe by the CBI, ED, and the income tax department gave ₹2,471 crore to the BJP through electoral bonds, and ₹1,698 crore of it was donated after raids by these agencies.

“Future Gaming gave ₹60 crore to the BJP within three months of I-T and ED raids on November 12, 2023, and December 1, 2021, respectively. Aurobindo Pharma gave ₹5 crore to the BJP within three months of the ED raid on November 10, 2022,” senior advocate Prashant Bhushan said last week.

After the disclosures, the opposition parties have dubbed the electoral bonds as legalized corruption, while the BJP has said scrapping the bonds could lead to the return of black money in politics.

CHARU SURI AGAIN TREADS FEARLESS BETWEEN MUSIC GENRES

    By Mabel Pais

    “Charu’s raga-based improvisations are singular.” – Multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning pianist Arturo O’Farrill

“Rags & Ragas sees Suri take on fusion adventures like few other artists out there in terms of arrangements and styles, making it an exciting listen each time because you never know what might leap out at you among its intricate compositions.”             – Anurag Tagat, Rolling Stone

CHARU SURI, award-winning pianist and composer, embarks on a sonic journey that bridges sounds of both East and West, as well as introduces listeners to the art of the songbook. Joining her onstage are others (see program below). The event, ‘Charu Suri: The Art of Raga Jazz & American Songbook’ takes place on Friday, April 5, 2024, 8 PM at the Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, New York City.

CHARU SURI treads fearlessly between genres, pulling global influences that range from the mood-anchoring Indian ragas, Sufi music, to the trio. Her ground-breaking albums, ‘The Book of Ragas,’ and its sequel, ‘The Book of Ragas vol. 2’ have often elicited the response, “I’ve never heard this type of sound before.”

One of the few female composers from India to perform work at Carnegie Hall, Charu has lived in four continents, and writes music that reflect her journey as both a traveler and her training as a classical music piano prodigy. She has been playing the piano since the age of five, and performing since the age of nine, and one of her best memories is winning an international piano competition at the age of 15.

Hear Charu play the Verona Waltz – youtu.be/nT74c9rgI5M

Verona Waltz (‘RAGAS & WALTZES’ by Charu Suri), recorded at Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans. Dedicated to the beautiful town of Verona, New Jersey.

What started purely as an experiment with her ‘Book of Ragas’ has turned into a niche that she is now increasingly becoming known for. Her latest album is ‘RAGAS & WALTZES,’ a first collaboration between her and Preservation Hall’s jazz drummer, Joe Lastie. Her previous album, ‘RAGAS & WALTZES’ has received a lot of praise from critics. JAZZIZ Magazine (jazziz.com) has praised its classic reinvention of the European waltz, and Dan McClenaghan’s ‘All About Jazz’ said, “These are all Suri originals, with which she creates a mood that is a mix, tune-by-tune, of longing and solemnity, then of a lilting and uplifting beauty, segueing into tender reverence that shifts gear into a segment of lively swing before drifting back to loving respect. And that swing is surely inspired by New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s drummer, Joe Lastie, Jr., sitting in the recording session’s drummer’s chair.”

Her recent album, ‘RAGS & RAGAS,’ with bassist John Patitucci, drummer Joe Lastie, drummer Steve Gadd, and pianist Kobi Arad was released in September 2023.

Charu has performed at Lincoln Center and other prestigious concert halls around the world, including St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She often performs with her band, and sometimes as a soloist. Her work will be performed by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra for the first time on May 13, 2024 at NJPAC.

  • Indian-origin Pavan Davuluri named Windows and Surface Chief

Indian-origin Pavan Davuluri named Windows and Surface Chief

REDMOND, WA (TIP): Microsoft has appointed Indian born Pavan Davuluri, an alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, as its new chief for Windows and Surface.
According to technology news website The Verge, Microsoft underwent organizational restructuring following the surprise departure of former product lead Panos Panay to Amazon last year.
This restructuring led to the separation of the Windows and Surface groups, with Davuluri assuming responsibility for Surface silicon and devices, while Mikhail Parakhin led a new team focused on Windows and web experiences.
Now both Windows and Surface will be Davuluri’s responsibility, as Parakhin has “decided to explore new roles.”
Microsoft is now bringing together its Windows and devices teams once more, the Verge reported citing an internal memo from Rajesh Jha, Microsoft’s head of experiences and devices, outlining the new Windows organization.
“This will enable us to take a holistic approach to building silicon, systems, experiences, and devices that span Windows client and cloud for this AI era,” explains Jha. Davuluri is now the leader of Microsoft’s Windows and Surface team, reporting directly to Rajesh Jha.
Davuluri has worked at Microsoft for more than 23 years and was deeply involved in the company’s work with Qualcomm and AMD to create custom Surface processors. Davuluri has been instrumental in Microsoft’s initiatives to optimize Windows for Arm-based devices.
In a recent post on X, he expressed pride in the team’s efforts, announcing the launch of the first-ever #Surface AI PCs designed exclusively for business: Surface Pro 10 for Business and Surface Laptop 6 for Business. He commended the team for their work in bringing these devices and experiences to fruition for customers.
Jha says the Windows team will “work closely with the Microsoft AI team on AI, silicon, and experiences,” but there’s going to be some interesting areas of potential overlap that these new leaders are going to have to navigate.
Microsoft AI now looks after Edge, a browser that’s a key part of the Windows experience.
Davuluri, now joins the ranks of prominent Indian-origin leaders in major tech companies worldwide. Notable figures include Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet and Google, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM, Nikesh Arora of Palo Alto Networks, Neal Mohan from YouTube, and Shantanu Narayen of Adobe.
The Windows shake-up comes just days after Google DeepMind co-founder and former Inflection AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman joined Microsoft as the CEO of a new AI team. Microsoft also hired a bunch of Inflection AI employees, including co-founder Karén Simonyan who is now the chief scientist of Microsoft AI.
As a result, most of Inflection’s staff are joining Microsoft AI in what is being seen as a talent acquisition that carefully avoids direct regulatory scrutiny.
Suleyman is now the CEO of Microsoft AI, a new team that will handle the company’s consumer-facing AI products like Copilot, Bing, and Edge. Suleyman reports directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

  • British Army Officers celebrate Sikh festival of Holla Mohalla

British Army Officers celebrate Sikh festival of Holla Mohalla

The tradition dates back to the early 18th century

LONDON (TIP): The British Army celebrated the Sikh festival of Holla Mohalla with several British Sikh officers from the Defense Sikh Network (DSN) organizing the annual spring festivities that showcase the spirit of courage, preparation and readiness. The festival dates back to the early 18th century when it was initiated by Guru Gobind Singh as a celebration of military prowess during which martial skills are honed and exhibited in fierce but well-natured competition.

This year’s British Army Sikh Holla Mohalla event took place at the Ash Ranges in Hampshire, south-east England, on Tuesday, March 19 and involved traditional games such as tug of war as an ode to the military forebears who played these games.

Defense Sikh Network said its members, mainly the soldiers from the British Army, celebrated the Sikh Military Festival by taking part in the military shooting competition, traditional Sikh martial arts and traditional Sikh military games and finally finished the festival with rang, the throwing of colored powder as a mark of victory.

The network is the official organization within the UK’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) that supports inclusion from a Sikh perspective. The network said the festival particularly resonates with the Sikhs within the country’s armed forces and, therefore, it began celebrating it in the British Army in 2021.

“We feel this should be one of the premier events in the Sikh calendar to ensure our martial tradition continues. This event is a celebration of our longstanding tradition of Sikh military culture and values,” the Defense Sikh Network said.

  • Indian American player Yogesh Raut wins Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions

Indian American player Yogesh Raut wins Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions

VANCOUVER (TIP): Washington-based Indian American blogger, freelance writer and podcaster Yogesh Raut has won the 2024 Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions (ToC), to take home the $250,000 grand prize.
With his victory in the finals on Tuesday, March 19, Raut also punched his ticket to the upcoming Jeopardy! Masters’ competition, where he will face off against some of the top-performing players in Jeopardy! history.
Raut, who won three games in his initial appearances on the show, became the first player to notch three victories in the finals on Tuesday when he defeated six-game champion Troy Meyer and nine-game champion Ben Chan.
The March 19 final was a battle to the end, with Raut and Meyer sparring for first place during the first half of the game, according to an official account of the game. Heading into Double Jeopardy! Meyer was in the lead with $9,400, Raut sat in second place with $5,400, and Chan trailed in third with $3,400.
As the round progressed, Meyer and Raut continued their battle for first place. But Chan was determined to stay in the game and went all in on both Daily Doubles. While Chan picked up the first Daily Double, he was not successful in responding correctly to the second.
At the start of Final Jeopardy! Meher’s was still the front-runner with a score of $19,800, but Raut was not far behind with $16,600, and Chan was holding on to third place with $3,200.
However, after Meyers failed to provide the correct response, Raut pulled ahead and won the game with a score of $13,399. Chan, the only player who responded correctly to the final clue, took second place with a score of $6,400, and Troy placed third with $6,399.
“Jeopardy!’ is inherently a challenging game to play,” Raut said in an interview with the Seattle Times. “There’s a lot of luck involved, and over and over again, I benefited from the bad luck of other contestants.”
It was Raut’s second run in the game. After two decades of repeatedly auditioning, he won $98,000 after a four-day run in 2022.
Reflecting on his victory on his second outing, Raut wrote on jeopardy.com, “As I sat on my flight back from LAX (Los Angeles) to PDX (Portland) in November 2022, reflecting on my time on J! I thought I had maybe proven myself to be pretty smart.”
“I had won over $98,000, been part of J!’s only ‘Perfect Game’ since the 20th century and capped it all off with a fun night at O’Brien’s, the so-called ‘hardest pub quiz in the country,’” he recalled.
“Waiting for the plane to take off, I started playing the find-the-hidden-object game on the monitor in front of me. The woman next to me saw what I was doing and began playing too,” Raut wrote. “It didn’t take long for her to completely outpace me. Eventually, her boyfriend commenced as well, and he zoomed past me in no time at all.”
“Oh, right, I reminded myself. There are many different flavors of ‘smart.’ And so I got over myself and went back to my life” Raut wrote, and “put J! in the rearview mirror.”
That changed in December 2023, when local ABC affiliate KATU aired the news that he had been invited to the Tournament of Champions.
“My head spun. Chuck Forrest. Dan Melia. Colby Burnett. Brad Rutter. My fellow Indian American Vijay Balse. Was there a chance I could join these legends and all the other hallowed winners of the J! Tournament of Champions?” Yogesh recalled. “Yes. But only a 1/27 chance.”
“It took decades of hard work and dedication to put myself in a position to win the ToC, and it took a great deal of luck for me to triumph over equally skilled competitors,” he wrote. “But at the end of the day, I’m still the guy who — based on how bad I was at that airplane game — can easily be outperformed on a mildly complex visual search task.”
“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the first knowledge quizzing demonstrations I ever gave involved knowing states, capitals, and US presidents,” Raut recalled. “Growing up as the child of immigrants, with a foreign-sounding name in the heart of Central Illinois, I had to prove every day that I was an American.”

  • Unveiling the Electoral Bonds Scam: A Threat to Indian Democracy

The Electoral Bond, introduced in 2017 by the Modi government, was meant to reform political funding in India. However, what was hailed as a step towards transparency has turned out to be one of the largest election scams in the country’s history. Under the guise of facilitating legitimate donations, the Electoral Bond system has allegedly facilitated the funneling of Rs12,930 crores from corporate entities into the coffers of the ruling party. This has not only raised serious questions about the integrity of the electoral process but has also highlighted the extent of corruption within the corridors of power.

The Electoral Bond scheme was introduced with the promise of enhancing transparency in political funding by allowing individuals and companies to donate money to political parties anonymously. However, the lack of disclosure requirements regarding the identity of donors has provided a veil of secrecy, enabling the government to receive massive amounts of funds without public accountability. This opacity has created a breeding ground for corruption, with allegations surfacing that the ruling party, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been exploiting this loophole for its benefit.

It is alleged that the Modi government has been misusing government law enforcement agencies to coerce companies into purchasing Electoral Bonds and funneling funds into its coffers. Reports suggest that companies have been pressured into making these donations under the threat of facing punitive action from regulatory bodies. Such tactics not only undermine the principles of democracy but also raise serious concerns about the independence of institutions meant to uphold the rule of law.

In return for these donations, corporate entities purportedly receive favoritism in government projects and tenders. This quid pro quo arrangement not only distorts the level playing field but also undermines the principles of fair competition and meritocracy. By prioritizing the interests of donors over the welfare of the general public, the Modi government has eroded the trust of citizens in the democratic process.

The allegations of corruption and cronyism within the Modi government extend beyond electoral funding. There have been numerous instances where the ruling party has been accused of using state machinery to target political opponents and stifle dissent. Opposition leaders have been implicated in false cases and subjected to harassment and intimidation, particularly during election periods. Such tactics not only undermine the credibility of the electoral process but also pose a grave threat to the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.

The misuse of government machinery to suppress political opposition is a blatant violation of democratic norms and principles. Instead of fostering a healthy and vibrant political environment, the Modi government has resorted to authoritarian tactics to consolidate its power. By employing tactics such as selective prosecution and intimidation, the ruling party has sought to create a one-party state where dissent is silenced and opposition is marginalized.

The role of the opposition in holding the government accountable cannot be understated. However, the systematic targeting of opposition leaders and parties has severely undermined their ability to perform this essential function. By silencing dissenting voices and curbing political opposition, the Modi government has created a lopsided political landscape where the ruling party enjoys unchecked power and influence.

The need for urgent reforms to safeguard the integrity of India’s electoral process cannot be overstated. Transparency and accountability must be restored to political funding mechanisms to prevent the abuse of power and the subversion of democratic principles. Additionally, measures must be taken to insulate law enforcement agencies from political interference to ensure their independence and impartiality.

The future of Indian democracy hangs in the balance. Unless corrective measures are taken to address the rampant corruption and abuse of power, the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice enshrined in the Constitution will remain elusive. It is incumbent upon citizens, civil society, and the international community to hold the Modi government accountable for its actions and demand the restoration of democratic norms and principles. The fate of Indian democracy depends on it.

  • The Urgent Need for a Ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas Conflict: A Call for Humanity and Justice

In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, one thing becomes abundantly clear: the urgent necessity for a ceasefire. The relentless cycle of violence, fueled by political agendas and power struggles, has resulted in an appalling loss of human life and untold suffering for innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. As the world watches in horror, it is imperative that we raise our voices and demand an immediate end to this senseless bloodshed.

It is deeply regrettable that, when it comes to taking a principled stance on this issue, the United States, a nation founded on the ideals of justice and freedom, has faltered. Our lawmakers, entrusted with representing the interests of the American people, have failed in their duty to uphold these core values. Instead of prioritizing humanitarian concerns and advocating for peace, many have chosen to blindly support Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, turning a blind eye to the suffering of the Palestinian people.

While President Joe Biden has shown a willingness to challenge Netanyahu’s policies and push for a ceasefire, he faces staunch opposition from a faction of pro-Netanyahu and pro-Israel congressmen. In their unwavering loyalty to a foreign leader, they have forgotten the fundamental principles upon which America was built. Human dignity, freedom, and justice are not mere slogans but the bedrock of our society. It is incumbent upon our elected representatives to uphold these principles, even in the face of political pressure and allegiance to foreign powers.

The call for a ceasefire is not merely a moral imperative; it is a matter of life and death for thousands of innocent civilians trapped in the conflict zone. The recent resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council, calling for a cessation of hostilities during the holy month of Ramadan, underscores the global consensus on the need for peace. It is disheartening that the United States, the world’s leading superpower, chose to abstain from this resolution, signaling a failure of leadership and a disregard for the suffering of those affected by the violence.

At the heart of this conflict lies the stubborn refusal of one man, Benjamin Netanyahu, to heed the calls for peace. As rockets rain down on civilian populations and the death toll continues to climb, Netanyahu clings to power at any cost, disregarding the wishes of both the Israeli people and the international community. His actions betray the very essence of democracy, transforming Israel into a de facto dictatorship where dissent is silenced and human rights are trampled upon.

Those who continue to support Netanyahu and his policies must be held accountable for their complicity in the atrocities committed in the name of security. By turning a blind eye to the suffering of the Palestinian people, they become accomplices in the murder of democracy and the perpetuation of injustice. It is time for them to remember their allegiance not only to a foreign leader but also to the principles of justice and humanity that define America’s identity.

To the congressmen who oppose President Biden’s efforts to address the root causes of this conflict, we say this: history will judge you harshly for your failure to stand on the right side of justice. The American people demand accountability from their elected representatives, and we will not forget those who prioritize political expediency over human life.

In solidarity with the countless victims of this senseless violence, we urge all right-thinking individuals to support President Biden in his quest for peace. Let us raise our voices and demand an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Let us remind the world that America stands for human dignity, freedom, and justice for all.

It is time to bring an end to the carnage and usher in a new era of hope and reconciliation in the Middle East. The lives of countless innocent civilians depend on it, and history will remember our actions—or lack thereof—in this critical moment.

  • The devil is in the timing of ED action

The devil is in the timing of ED action

Arrest of a CM days after the notification of the General Election is a stunning blow to the credibility of elections

Elected legislators, or for that matter nobody, should be locked up for an inordinately long time. Bail, and not jail, ought to be the norm.

“The investigating agencies have not been able to open overflowing lockers stashed with cash or seize properties in Kejriwal’s or his family’s name. Kejriwal may well have devised some new methods, but what are they? Elected legislators, or for that matter nobody, should be locked up for an inordinately long time. Bail, and not jail, ought to be the norm. Indefinite detention will only be perceived as pre-conviction punishment. Coupled with the freezing of the Congress’ accounts by the Income Tax Department, Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED will only mar the credibility of the elections that PM Modi is poised to win.”

    By Rajesh Ramachandran

In the past two decades, I have closely watched Arvind Kejriwal grow from a small-time activist in his tiny Patparganj shop-turned-office to the Delhi Chief Minister in his palatial bungalow on Flagstaff Road. As a non-political social activist, his dedication in ensuring government-subsidized food to a working-class East Delhi colony and his commitment to making the public distribution system work were admirable. It was exhilarating to drive around Delhi in a rickety Maruti 800 with him, seeking documents to expose the attempted privatization of the drinking water supply in Delhi under a World Bank scheme.

Elected legislators, or for that matter nobody, should be locked up for an inordinately long time. Bail, and not jail, ought to be the norm.

His remarkable growth trajectory as an activist demanding the right to information with complete self-belief in tackling corruption through information touched its apogee when he pawned his activist capital for a political career, scripting the downfall of the UPA government. The UPA had retained power in 2009, with the Opposition BJP getting reduced in size. Only a new kind of political activism could have discredited a government that had won a second term. Kejriwal’s anti-corruption crusade offered that platform, with Kisan Baburao Hazare from Ralegaon putting on the Gandhian act, rousing TV audiences into a stupefied search for a messiah.

Behind the scenes, Kejriwal was attending conferences held at the pro-BJP think tank, the Vivekananda International Foundation. Meanwhile, politics was being practiced on social media for the first time. Then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s media advisers did not even have a social media account, let alone know how to target rivals on these platforms to create a false or alternative political narrative. In short, Kejriwal turned out to be the master of perception management on social media and in mainstream media. He kindled idealism in those who couldn’t be bought and struck a chord among those who wanted to bring the government down. And this eminently suited then BJP-led Opposition.

His stunning performance in the 2013 Delhi elections proved the efficacy of politics reduced to perception without a grassroots-level organization. The RSS cadre had indeed worked hard to drum up support for the Hazare-Kejriwal protests, but the election victory was entirely Kejriwal’s. And he refused to share his party or his newfound power with colleagues who helped him build the party. In that sense, he had an acute understanding of the dynamics of power, which he proved when his party won the Delhi Assembly elections repeatedly and later even the Punjab polls. He could offer a credible alternative to the behemoths within the existing power structure.

In a way, his achievements were magical. He could have taken the easier path of joining the Sangh Parivar forces that were helping him bring down the UPA government. His social agenda was always soft towards Hindutva — he was one of the first non-BJP Chief Ministers to visit the Ram Temple along with Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann. Kejriwal was a genuine political entrepreneur who had immense faith in his startup. His Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was the only decacorn (of course, a political enterprise can’t be valued in business terms) to emerge from the politics of protest and social media in the new millennium, and he wasn’t going to give it away to a bigger party for a seat at the high table. He was going to build a new high table and such was his blinding self-belief.

All founders of indefatigable startups fail when their self-belief overrides social realities — objective conditions, as the Marxists would explain. AAP’s only USP was its anti-corruption plank that catapulted it to successfully make claims of good governance and effective delivery of services — electricity, water and schools — for the poorest segments of the voters. But the new liquor policy stretched the limits of its own political credibility. In one fell swoop, a new system was brought in, which made AAP vulnerable to obvious allegations of favoring new players, who replaced the earlier ones.

Till the story of the liquor policy scam allegations was playing itself out into a campaign weapon against AAP, the BJP’s political script was running fine. But the arrest of a sitting Chief Minister five days after the notification of the General Election is a stunning blow to the poll process. The country’s democratic credentials get questioned when a prominent Opposition leader, who holds a constitutional post, is arrested after the commencement of the poll process. This is not a new case. Delhi’s former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the same case on March 9, 2023; AAP’s senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on October 4, 2023; and its communication chief Vijay Nair in November 2022.

In a case that has been dragging on for over a year and a half, there was absolutely no hurry to arrest a CM after the beginning of the process that gives the stamp of authority to the winning party to govern 140 crore people. This is by no means an attempt to give the clean chit to Kejriwal or AAP, which may or may not have indulged in a conspiracy resulting in the party receiving Rs 100 crore in bribes. This is about the timing of the arrest.

The investigating agencies have not been able to open overflowing lockers stashed with cash or seize properties in Kejriwal’s or his family’s name. Kejriwal may well have devised some new methods, but what are they? Elected legislators, or for that matter nobody, should be locked up for an inordinately long time. Bail, and not jail, ought to be the norm. Indefinite detention will only be perceived as pre-conviction punishment. Coupled with the freezing of the Congress’ accounts by the Income Tax Department, Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED will only mar the credibility of the elections that PM Modi is poised to win.

The Opposition has been crying itself hoarse about an undeclared emergency for long. It didn’t wash all this while, simply because all top Opposition politicians of the country were free to profess their politics. Now, the election-eve arrest of Kejriwal has a chilling effect.

  • Artificial Intelligence in Farming: A New Era of Farming

Artificial Intelligence in Farming: A New Era of Farming

“Artificial Intelligence’ can help increase crop yields and optimize resource usage through precision agriculture. AI-powered systems can analyze data from sensors, satellites, and drones to provide insights into soil health, water usage, and crop growth. This information can then be used to make data-driven decisions about irrigation, fertilization, and pest control, resulting in higher crop yields and lower environmental impact. AI can also be used to develop new crop varieties and predict weather patterns, helping farmers to be more resilient to climate change. AI-powered cameras, drones, smart fences, and plant sensors help in detecting cattle intruders and pest invaders. AI can analyze historical data and weather forecasts to predict potential infestations and optimize crop protection measures. AI-powered sprayers can target specific areas with pesticides and fertilizers, reducing waste and improving efficacy.”

‘Decentralize Farming with Blockchain’ is a recent social media advertisement further stating, ‘Revolutionize Food with Blockchain.’ It sounded more like an educational course.

    By Vijay Nadella

My interest in agriculture comes from my birth country, India, where agriculture is a large sector of the economy and constantly suffers. During my recent visit to India, I had the chance to interact with horticulture and plant health management institutions. Both these institutions are working towards the mission of empowering the farmers. As we all know, social media is keeping an eye on me and my activities to send these well-curated ads on my way. I was curious about the course and started exploring how a resource incentive, modern Blockchain, can help ever challenging and traditional agriculture.

Secondly, how can these high-end technologies help mostly uneducated farmers? How are these technologies going to shape the future of agriculture? Do they propose a reliable framework? Do these frameworks help produce high-impact organic food with low-cost Agri-inputs? What are the dichotomies of opportunities and challenges of these technologies? Can they ever be institutionalized? With these questions in mind, I dive deep into the concept and how these technologies can be integrated into agriculture.

    Unison of Technologies

In the new era of farming, how these technologies collaborate for smart agriculture is seamless. IoT is a network of interconnected devices that can collect and exchange data. At the same time, AI is a set of technologies that can analyze and learn from data to make decisions and predictions. Finally, Blockchain is a decentralized and secure ledger that records and verifies transactions. When these technologies are combined, they can create powerful and innovative solutions for various industries, including agriculture.

‘Predictive Agriculture’ is possible with these technologies that help in yield prediction, resource optimization, disease, and pest detection, risk management, and supply chain optimization. It is a data-driven approach to farming that uses advanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. It involves collecting and analyzing data from various sources, such as IoT sensors, weather forecasts, and historical crop data, to make data-driven decisions and improve farm productivity and sustainability.

    The Advantages

‘Internet of Things’, in the sense that more things are connected to the internet than people. If the world’s human population is 8.1 billion, 19.08 billion are connected to the Internet, making the number of connected devices per person 2.35 devices. Agriculture has always been an essential part of human civilization, and with the world’s population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, the need for efficient and sustainable farming practices has never been more urgent. IoT sensors can collect farm data, such as soil moisture, temperature, and crop health. AI can analyze this data to provide insights and predictions, such as when to water or fertilize crops. Blockchain can then securely record and verify these transactions, ensuring transparency and accountability.

‘Blockchain’ technology has the potential to revolutionize the food supply chain by providing precise traceability, streamlined efficiency, enhanced security, improved collaboration, and sustainable transparency. It can promote sustainability in the food supply chain by tracking and reporting environmental impact data, such as water usage, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. Blockchain’s immutable ledger can record and provide a verifiable chain of custody for food products, capturing critical data such as origin, storage conditions, and quality inspections. The smart contracts on the Blockchain can automate and optimize various supply chain processes, including invoicing, logistics, and compliance, resulting in increased efficiency. The cryptographic security features of Blockchain ensure data integrity and prevent unauthorized access, providing a tamper-proof and auditable record of the food supply chain. Moreover, Blockchain’s shared and transparent platform fosters collaboration and communication among all parties in the food supply chain, including farmers, distributors, retailers, and consumers.

‘Artificial Intelligence’ can help increase crop yields and optimize resource usage through precision agriculture. AI-powered sprayers can target specific areas with pesticides and fertilizers, reducing waste and improving efficacy.

    The Real Challenge

The real challenge is to do this work in real time and make farmers understand and learn these technologies. Moving these technologies from theoretical framework to application framework. It requires conducting awareness campaigns first and then educational campaigns. Granting subsidies for using technology has proven to be the highest incentive. There is also the argument that a one-time or short-term subsidy can create awareness, help with the evaluation process—learning by doing—and provide information about the technology, thereby accelerating early adoption and the diffusion process.

The integration of IoT, Blockchain, and AI technologies in agriculture presents both opportunities and challenges. While these technologies can increase efficiency, improve data management, enhance transparency, promote sustainable agriculture, and improve food safety, they can also create security risks, interoperability issues, complexity, regulatory challenges, and ethical and social implications. Therefore, it is essential to carefully consider these opportunities and challenges and develop strategies to address them to ensure the successful adoption and scalability of these solutions in agriculture.

  • The Urgent Need for a Ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas Conflict: A Call for Humanity and Justice

    Prof. Indrajit S. Saluja

  • CELEBRATING NIKKI GIOVANNI FOR WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

    By Mabel Pais

“We’ve got to live in the real world. If we don’t like the world we’re living in, change it. And if we can’t change it, we change ourselves. We can do something.”     – Nikki Giovanni

    Nikki Giovanni (Credit / nikki-giovanni.com)

Honor Women’s History Month by joining NJPAC’s in-person ‘Standing in Solidarity’ celebration of acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni whose words have inspired the courage to dream for decades. She’s an icon, activist and Afrofuturist feminist who emerged from the Black Arts Movement of the ’60s and ’70s. She speaks her truth with humor and heart, and her themes can feel otherworldly and hopeful in spite of the harsh realities during which they were written. This event takes place on Wednesday, March 27 at 6 pm in the Chase Room at NJPAC.

NJPAC’s  PSEG True Diversity Film is ‘Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project,’ winner of the U.S. Grand Jury Prize for documentary in the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The film tells Giovanni’s life story through her words including interviews, public appearances and candid interactions with family and friends. Making the film was a seven year project for directors and producers Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson.

Following the screening, Stephenson will be in conversation with Donna Walker-Kuhne, Senior Advisor of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at NJPAC. Also appearing is Amina Bey, Executive Director of Newark Emergency Services for Families, and Naomi Extra who will perform one of her original poems. This program is a co-production of Women@NJPAC and Dodge Poetry.

    THE FILM

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize in the Sundance U.S. Documentary Competition, this beguiling documentary portrait follows poet and activist Nikki Giovanni as she approaches 80.

The film explores Giovanni’s Afrofuturist-feminist philosophical outlook as well as her poignant relationship with her family, her political audacity, and her poetic eloquence, all knit together with a constant eye and ear for its subject’s own aesthetic verve.

Looking back at a personal life and history cast in the long shadow of American racism, and forward to hopeful, possible futures, Giovanni acts as our guide and narrator, with refreshingly unorthodox filmmakers Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson refraining from traditional chronologies or talking-head conventions.

Going to Mars is fueled by constant intellectual engagement and radical imagination in the search for emotional and political fulfillment in a world of disenfranchisement. An HBO Documentary Films release.

Miami open: Murray has last laugh vs Berrettini, again

Andy Murray won another lengthy match with Matteo Berrettini, who appeared weary and leaned on his racquet to keep his balance during Murray’s 4-6 6-3 6-4 victory at the Miami Open. Playing his first match on the ATP Tour this season, Berrettini was serving with Murray leading 5-2 in the second set when he seemed to become dizzy, resting his racquet on the court to hold himself up. He was visited by a medical attendant, who checked his blood pressure before play continued.
Berrettini left the court after dropping that set but was able to finish the match, which lasted 2 hours and 49 minutes. It was a rematch of Murray’s 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-7(7) 7-6 (10-6) victory that lasted nearly five hours in the first round of the 2023 Australian Open.
“It was obviously a great win for me,” Murray said. “Started off a little bit slow but then I did think I played pretty well across then end of the first set through to the end of the match.”
Naomi Osaka, a two-time US Open champion, beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3 6-4 in her return to Miami. The runner-up to Iga Swiatek in her last appearance in 2022 advanced to face No. 15 seed Elina Svitolina in the second round. Elsewhere, Sloane Stephens celebrated her 31st birthday by beating Angelique Kerber 6-2 6-3. Donna Vekic beat Karolina Pliskova 6-4 2-6 6-2; and Americans Danielle Collins and Shelby Rogers advanced with three-set victories.

  • CSK, Mumbai get new captains as Pant returns after over a year

CSK, Mumbai get new captains as Pant returns after over a year

NEW DELHI (TIP)- The never-ending speculation surrounding Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s retirement, Virat Kohli’s 16-year drought, the second chance that life has offered Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma’s World Cup agony will make for intriguing sub-plots in the Indian Premier League (IPL) beginning on March 22. Known to do the unexpected, Dhoni stepped down as Chennai Super Kings’ captain on the eve of the IPL opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, handing over the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad, a man he mentored for the leadership role. “We have been working hard to prepare leaders. We have been slow on life after MS Dhoni. But trusting the youngsters has paid off well for us. I have already had a word with the youngsters like Rutu about leadership and captaincy. It is a great opportunity for him to lead the team,” CSK coach Stephen Fleming said.
Delhi Capitals’ Pant, back from the brink after a life-threatening accident, will be desperate to show the world that he can still hit those one-handed sixes with elan.
Rohit will be the last person to show his scars hidden behind his typical Mumbaikar nonchalance as he gets down to enjoying his evening dates at the Wankhede albeit without the captain’s title. The partisan crowd would, nonetheless, look forward to his trademark pull shots.
For other captains, they need to win the on-field games but Hardik Pandya needs to win the dressing room too. There will be seniors with bruised egos, knowing that a shot at leadership has bypassed them. They could well be difficult to handle.
As for Kohli, he would be in pursuit of that elusive jewel in his crown. By his own admission, he has been longing for a big title and his own passionate approach to the game would be a key factor in deciding whether the RCB men manage to emulate the women this year. A bigger prize is also at stake for at least 10 to 12 other players, who will be vying for eight slots on the New York-bound flight that will take off at the end of May for the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean.
There will be unbelievable comebacks by some; a few new stars will emerge; there will also be those usual rags-to-riches stories and all of it could unfold in a matter of four minutes, the time it takes to deliver one over.
