VIKAS KHANNA’S ROOFTOP PARTY CELEBRATES TRIBECA FEST’S LGBTQ+ FILM HONORS

    By Mabel Pais

The Who’s Who of Manhattan celebrated the success in the Tribeca Film Festival 2022 of Naman Gupta’s LGBTQ+ short film ‘COMING OUT WITH THE HELP OF A TIME MACHINE’ at a rooftop party hosted by celebrity chef and filmmaker Vikas Khanna in Manhattan.

The film had its New York City premiere at the prestigious Tribeca Festival, as part of the closing night block of queer films on June 19. Guests of honor at Khanna’s private soiree included Bollywood actor and philanthropist Vivek Oberoi, Delhi fashion designer Mayyur Girotra, Jewelry designer Amrita Singh, Sufi Wines founder Sam Bhatia, New York City’s top realtor Jaswant Lalwani, the film’s producers Nav and Neetu Gupta and James and Teddy Orfanos and lead actors Karan Soni and Sangeeta Agrawal, to name a few. “I’ve always been on the forefront of supporting South Asian culture from the very beginning. My heart, my doors are always open to promote anything to do with South Asian food, arts, entertainment, fashion and culture,” said Khanna, who hosted the party on the rooftop of his Manhattan residence.

‘COMING OUT…….’ was one of 10 films with a Desi connection programmed at Tribeca, the most ever in the festival’s history. “It really feels like our time has come! There are a lot of people from the South Asian community who have pioneered and paved the way for us to stand where we are today, and with Tribeca giving so many of us the platform that we have, it’s truly a momentous year for the South Asian diaspora,” said Agrawal, who plays Soni’s homophobic mother in the film.

At the event, the director made the BIG announcement that the short film is being converted into an episodic television series: “The series is going to be a one-hour drama, and it’s not something that just the LGBTQ crowd or the South Asian crowd or the sci-fi crowd will enjoy. It’s a very international, mainstream, sci-fi, immigrant family drama inter-twined with a LGBTQ romance and rivalry, so I’m super excited about that,” said Gupta. The series is currently in development, and the core team is looking for additional producers and distributors to helm the project.

“I think it’s really interesting, given the timing of the film right now, especially during PRIDE Month. There are issues, especially within the Desi community, in terms of how parents or children are equipped to deal with coming out, and it is a difficult process for both. But you watch something like this, and it may just make you respond more sensitively…more with the heart rather than the perception of what will my community think of me, what will the world think of me…so less judgment and more love because at the end of the day, that’s what family is for,” said Oberoi, who was at the event to support long-time friends, producers Nav and Neetu Gupta.

For more information about the journey of the film and the development of the series, visit comingoutfilm.com.

When coming out to his traditional Indian parents, Sid uses his time machine to reset the day in an attempt to make sure everything goes perfectly.

‘Coming Out With The Help Of A Time Machine’ is a story of family dynamics and acceptance, with strong LGBTQ+ and heartfelt sci-fi themes. Sid plans to come out to his conservative, community-oriented parents at a local diner. If anything goes wrong, Sid could lose the support of the people who matter to him most. Luckily, he has the power of time travel on his side-and he will do anything in his power to emerge from this encounter unscathed.

The co-producers of the film Maissa Lihedheb, Lamin Leroy Gibba, and Sailesh Naidu developed the idea together for the film ‘DogFriend,’ wanting to tell a complex and nuanced story, centering a perspective almost never seen on screen. While working with an almost entirely queer and trans BIPOC filmcrew. DogFriend (Hundefreund) explores themes of love, race, and mental health–while subtly (and at times loudly) suggesting that those are intrinsically connected. In the wake of the global Black Lives Matter movement, during which race and systemic oppression are discussed more than ever, conversations about nuanced lived experiences and interpersonal connections are often decentered.

  • STARS ILLUMINE NJPAC’S SPOTLIGHT GALA

    By Mabel Pais

“Today, Women@NJPAC is focused on supporting the vital work of the Arts Center — and amplifying the voices of women in our communities, in the arts, in the social justice movement, and in the corporate world.”

“The ‘Spotlight Gala’ is not only an opportunity for us to raise funds for NJPAC’s award-winning programs for children and families, but also to spread the word about our work supporting all women, and lifting up the next generation of fierce, creative and effective leaders.”-Faith Taylor, President – Women@NJPAC

NJPAC invites you to its annual SPOTLIGHT GALA where a galaxy of singing stars in “Perfect Harmony” join Women@NJPAC to illuminate the evening with the broadcast airing on NJ PBS (New Jersey’s public television station, and MyNJPBS.org/live) on October 2 at 7 PM EDT.

The stars include Broadway’s Kelli O’Hara, jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin, jazz vocal group Manhattan Transfer, a cappella ensembles Take 6 and Naturally 7 and modern-day doo wop masters Under the Streetlamp will appear during an exhilarating night of performances that celebrate the power of vocal music. Toby and Leon G. Cooperman, and the Cooperman Family, will be honored with the NJPAC ‘Founders Award’ during the Gala, acknowledging their contributions in the fields of medicine, education and the performing arts, and their founding gift toward the construction of the new Cooperman Family Arts Education and Community Center — a purpose-built new home for the Arts Center’s arts education and community engagement programs, scheduled to open in 2024. “For years, the Arts Center’s Spotlight Gala has been our way of celebrating the beginning of our season, of saying ‘thank you’ to all our supporters and audience members, and of ensuring that our work in arts education and community engagement can thrive and grow,” says John Schreiber, President and CEO of NJPAC. “Although the Arts Center is now beginning to reopen for in-person performances, I’m so pleased that this year we will once again take our biggest party of the year virtual and share our exciting Spotlight Gala concert with arts lovers across the state through our ongoing partnership with NJ PBS.”

    EVENTS OF 2021

Some of the many programs hosted or made possible by Women@NJPAC this year:

A “Leading Ladies” virtual panel discussion featuring the powerhouse team of women behind the New Jersey Arts and Culture Recovery Fund, an initiative that raised millions of dollars to keep New Jersey’s arts organizations alive in the wake of coronavirus.

The third annual “Gathering of Givers,” Women@NJPAC’s celebration of the power of women in philanthropy, which this year focused on women’s contributions to rebuilding communities after the pandemic, featuring Lara Abrash, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Deloitte & Touche, and Joanne Lin, Principal, Newark Venture Partners, among many other women executives.

“She Did That: Black Women in the Workplace,” a part of the Arts Center’s “PSEG True Diversity Film Series,” which highlighted the growing impact of African American women executives and entrepreneurs. The launch of Women Leaders @ Work, a new series of virtual events, co-sponsored by Executive Women of New Jersey, that explores the impact of women who are advancing organizations large and small. The first event in the series, Women in the Boardroom, focused on women who are taking leadership roles in corporate and nonprofit boards.

    A virtual edition of the Women@NJPAC annual ‘Spring Luncheon,’ which offered a fascinating conversation with fashion icon Norma Kamali, and an appearance by Tony Award winning Broadway powerhouse, Laura Benanti;

Plus, hundreds of students in NJPAC’s arts training programs received scholarships from Women@NJPAC to continue their studies.

    WOMEN@NJPAC & The Spotlight Gala

Women@NJPAC, a “sisterhood for good” was established in 1994. The annual Spotlight Gala is organized by Women@NJPAC, the Arts Center’s longtime advocacy organization.

The organization was started by nine women. This small band of women has now grown into a powerhouse of fundraising and “friend-raising” that today numbers thousands of members. Over the past 27 years, the Women@NJPAC has become an organization that not only supports the work of the Arts Center but serves as a networking venue par excellence for New Jersey women, and a funder with a particular focus on issues impacting women and girls. Women@NJPAC annually hosts multiple events on and off the Arts Center campus. It has grown into an organization of thousands of executives, artists, activists, mothers and change-makers devoted to advancing the performing arts, amplifying the philanthropic work of its members, and helping NJPAC deliver on its mission as an anchor cultural institution. LC “BAANDS” TOGETHERDANCE FESTIVAL

    By Mabel Pais

    BAAND Poster (Photo : incolncenter.org.)

LINCOLN CENTER presents the “BAAND Together” Dance Festival, an unprecedented week of outdoor dance performances as part of Restart Stages. At Lincoln Center’s Restart Stages, from August 17-21, five of the city’s most iconic dance companies share the stage — for the first time ever! Ballet Hispánico, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem come together on one stage—with dancers and works from across the companies featured each night at 7:30 pm at Damrosch Park. New works and repertory favorites offer audiences the unique and exciting experience of an evening of programming curated collaboratively by the artistic directors of each company.

Company Members Lead Outdoor Family Workshops

Before Ballet Hispánico, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem take the stage at night, they’ll be teaching kids and families how to dance for themselves at 4:00 pm from August 17–21. Join the general admission standby line the day of the event. From Salsa, barre work, West African dance style Kuku, and signature “Swan Lake” choreography, you’ll be moving to your own beat in no time.

    Program 1 – August 17, 2021

    Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Lazarus (excerpt); Choreographed by Rennie Harris

This excerpt is inspired by the life and times of Alvin Ailey. It addresses racial inequities in America when Mr. Ailey founded his company in 1958 as well as today. Watch the video from Part 1: youtu.be/Mluat0zysb4

    New York City Ballet

“Ces Noms Que Nous Portons;” Choreographed by Kyle Abraham

A tribute to LGBTQ Pride Month in 2020. The artists revealed their intent to “celebrate our queerness and our color in a way that hopefully stresses its importance, its fragility, and its strength. We create dances for those who have yet to see themselves on a stage.” To see the world premiere dance on film performance of “Ces Noms Que Nous Portons,” watch the video: youtu.be/DG0o1bjmRIA

    Dance Theatre of Harlem

Harlem on my Mind (excerpt); Choreographed by Darrell Grand Moultrie

“This work was created to celebrate the memory of my beloved music teacher Ms. Gwendolyn McLoud. She loved Jazz music and made sure her students in Harlem were exposed to its history and brilliance. I would love to keep sharing this great music with the next generation.” – Darrell Grand Moultrie

    American Ballet Theatre

Let Me Sing Forevermore; Choreographed by Jessica Lang

Jessica Lang’s spirited and romantic “Let Me Sing Forevermore” is set to a medley of American popular songs as sung by Tony Bennett (“Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” “Fly Me To The Moon” and “I Got Rhythm”).

    Ballet Hispánico

18+1; Choreographed by Gustavo Ramírez Sansano

18+1 celebrates Gustavo’s 19 years as a choreographer and the vulnerability, care, and hope that comes with each artistic endeavor. In a display of subtle humor and electric choreography, the movement merges with the playful rhythms found in Pérez Prado’s mambo music. Sansano draws from his history and memory to take a joyous look at the past, present, and future.

  • NYAFF @ 20 RETURNS

    By Mabel Pais

New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) Returns for 20th Year

“…..one of the city’s most valuable events.” – The New York Times.

“After our special focus on women in front of and behind the camera at the 2020 NYAFF, we’re honored to continue championing female-forward films this year.” – Claire Marty, NYAFF Associate Director

“We’re especially excited about all the stars aligning so we can host the outdoor screening of the Hong Kong uber-classic, “Dragon Inn AKA New Dragon Gate Inn.” This marks the 10th anniversary of the film’s restoration by NYAFF, and the 29th anniversary of the film, which stars two of Asia’s greatest actresses of all time, Maggie Cheung and Brigitte Lin, as well as Donnie Yen in supervillain mode. What better way is there to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the festival?”

    – Samuel Jamier, Exec. Dir.- NYAFF & President – New York Asian Film Foundation

The Dragon Inn, HongKong uber classic

The New York Asian Film Festival’s (NYAFF) 20th Edition is co-presented by The New York Asian Film Foundation and Film at Lincoln Center (FLC). This is a hybrid event with NYAFF’s largest film lineup to date. The Festival will screen over 60 films, both virtually and in person, to audiences in New York and across the country. It takes place August 6–22, 2021: In person, August 6-8 at FLC’s Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th Street), August 7-22 in FLC Virtual Cinema, and August 9–22 at SVA Theatre (333 West 23rd Street).

NYAFF’s 2021 lineup covers Premieres, Restorations, Nationwide Virtual Screenings and Return to Theaters. It includes two world premieres, six international premieres, 29 North American premieres, eight U.S. premieres, and nine New York premieres, showcasing the most exciting action, comedy, drama, thriller, romance, horror, and art-house films from East Asia.

Following an unprecedented year in which COVID-19 and increased violence against the Asian community in the United States presented enormous challenges, NYAFF is more committed than ever to increasing exposure of Asian representation on screen, and to providing opportunities for audiences of all communities to experience the diversity and brilliance of Asian cinema.

Following a fully virtual 19th edition, NYAFF is delighted to present almost half of this year’s 60+ titles in person. To celebrate, as well as to mark its 20th year, the Festival will be co-hosting, with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York and Film at Lincoln Center, a free outdoor screening in Damrosch Park of Raymond Lee’s wuxia classic “Dragon Inn” AKA “New Dragon Gate Inn” on August 11. The all-star remake of King Hu’s iconic “Dragon Inn” is one of the wildest and most epic films ever produced by Tsui Hark.

The Festival has established exciting new sections for its 20th edition. Films are grouped thematically, in the following sections: Beyond Borders, Crowd Pleasers, Frontlines, Genre Masters, Next/Now, Standouts, and Vanguards (see descriptions below).

“Even when in the darkest part of your life, you can see beauty.”- Moment Magazine

Shira Haas made an indelible impression (she was nominated for an Emmy and won an Independent Spirit Award) as the lead in the recent TV series “Unorthodox.” In “Asia” she stars as a Russian emigre (Vika) to Israel, navigating her teenage years with her single mother Asia (Alena Yiv), burdened by an illness that makes all of her decisions infinitely more poignant.

Young single mother Asia (Alena Yiv) hides nothing about her work-hard, play-hard lifestyle, and expects the same openness and honesty from her teenage daughter Vika (Shira Haas). But when Vika’s health declines, her need for independence and romantic exploration become paramount, and Asia realizes she must change her ways to allow her daughter to live her own life.

    DIR: JUDD EHRLICH l 1h 30m

    OFFICIAL SELECTION: TRIBECA FESTIVAL 2021

    TFF2021

“The Price of Freedom” is an unflinching look at the gun violence epidemic in America and the role the National Rifle Association, with its outsized political and cultural influence, has played over time. The NRA believes the deaths of innocent Americans are a necessary price to pay for the freedom to own firearms without restrictions. By manipulating the narrative around guns and backing politicians who commit to upholding their agenda, the NRA has cost us far more than we realize. Featuring passionate pleas from President William J. Clinton, Representative Lucy McBath (D-GA) and Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT); NRA Board Member and former NRA President David Keene, and activists on all sides of the issue, The Price of Freedom presents a compelling case for those brave enough to take a stand against the NRA in defense of our communities and collective future.

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) celebrates the 30th anniversary of the NJSO Youth Orchestras and highlights the program’s talented students at the virtual “Spring into Music” Gala on May 12. The event features a free NJSO concert available to the public and a VIP pre-show party for gala supporters.

In the 7:30 pm concert, the Orchestra gives the world premiere of “The Enchanted Forest” – a piece composed by Youth Orchestras students through a creative composition project – and showcases concerto competition winner Hannah Lee, an East Brunswick 12th grader, in the Allegro maestoso from Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G Major, K. 313. NJSO Youth Orchestras Artistic Director José Luis Domínguez conducts.

The program also includes chamber performances by the Youth Orchestras’ Anne Lieberson Ensemble (with NJSO Music Director Xian Zhang on piano) and Curtland E. Fields Ensemble, plus special guest appearances and a signature cocktail demonstration from Newark’s All Points West Distillery.

The concert will be available on demand at njsymphony.org/springintomusic and on the NJSO’s YouTube channel beginning at 7:30 pm.

“The Enchanted Forest” grew out of a season long NJSO Youth Orchestras creative composition project in which all students collaborated in small groups to explore their own musical voices and compose new works drawing from all the genres that inspire them. NJSO musician coaches guided each group, and Domínguez orchestrated and arranged the works.

José Luis Domínguez conducts the NJSO (Photo / Courtesy NJSO)

Domínguez says: “The professional orchestra, the hall, the scores, the lights, the cameras – so many people dedicated so much work to these students’ ideas. That is touching beyond description. That is unforgettable.”

Self-dubbed the ‘Chromatic Creators,’ the young composers who teamed up to pen “The Enchanted Forest” include Ameya Srinivasan (seventh grade, Edison), Amy Zarebczan (11th grade, Passaic), Ashita Birla (10th grade, Jersey City), Kevin Yang (sixth grade, Edison), Natalie Sokolov (ninth grade, Holmdel), Samantha Huerta (10th grade, Wayne). NJSO flutist and piccolo player Kathleen Nester coached the group.

Ashita Birla says: “Composing an original piece by collaborating with my peers in the Chromatic Creators was an experience of a lifetime. When I heard that the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra would be playing ‘The Enchanted Forest,’ it felt surreal. I was amazed and honored to hear that our piece would come to life at the hands of accomplished musicians. It inspires me to continue composing and playing violin to express my voice through music.”

The winner of the annual NJSO Youth Orchestras’ Henry Lewis Concerto Competition traditionally gives a solo performance with the Youth Orchestras’ most advanced orchestra at its annual spring concert. Hannah Lee won the 2020 competition, but the Youth Orchestras’ spring concert was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the NJSO invited her to perform with the professional orchestra for this year’s gala.

“I am so thankful that in spite of the pandemic I had a chance to perform with the NJSO. It was such an honor,” Lee says. “It still feels like a dream that I performed, and I’ll definitely feel that way watching the performance as well!”

“Hannah gave such a professional, musical performance. She has a brilliant future with the flute,” Domínguez says. “I can only imagine how encouraged she must feel as she embarks on her path towards a professional future.”

A 7 pm VIP pre-show party offers opportunities for gala supporters to virtually mingle with NJSO musicians and special guests. Iachetti’s Kitchen in Glen Rock will demonstrate how to make a delicious appetizer to savor.

The Spring into Music Gala online auction, open from May 3–12, offers items from restaurant gift cards to vacation getaways.

The gala honorees are BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a longtime NJSO Youth Orchestras funder, as well as NJSO musicians and founding Youth Orchestras coaches Martin Andersen and Robert Wagner. Michelle Merchant, an NJSO supporter and NJSO Youth Orchestras parent, and Dr. Philip Neches, an NJSO trustee and Amadeus Circle leader, co-chair the event.

    GALA SUPPORT

Opportunities to support the gala can be accessed by visiting njsymphony.org/springintomusic

NJSO President & CEO Gabriel van Aalst says: “The students’ triumphs in the past year—from virtual learning and performances to the impressive new works they have composed—are an incredible testament to their talent and perseverance, and we are proud to showcase the students at this gala.”

NJSO Music Director Xian Zhang says: “This gala concert is a true showcase for the incredible achievements of the NJSO Youth Orchestras students. Our musicians have a deep love for coaching and working with students, and the program has reached new heights under the leadership of José Luis Domínguez. I am thrilled to see these young musicians blossoming and sharing their own musical voices.” Spring into Music is part of NJSO Virtual 20–21, the Orchestra’s digital season. By Mabel Pais

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) with DreamPlay Films presents “EMERGE,” an NJSO Concert Film trilogy pairing orchestral performances with stunning visuals, mesmerizing dance sequences and format-bending on-and off-stage elements.

Music Director Xian Zhang conducts programs featuring a trio of star pianists—Daniil Trifonov, Simone Dinnerstein and Inon Barnatan. The films are directed by award-winning, Newark-raised filmmaker Yuri Alves and produced by DreamPlay Films, part of Newark-based DreamPlay Media.

“EMERGE Part 1” premieres April 28.

Zhang leads the East Coast premiere of “Primal Message” by American composer Nokuthula Ngwenyama, whom ‘Gramophone’ has hailed for the “bold mesmerizing character” of her music. Simone Dinnerstein, whose “individual, compelling” (‘New York Times’) interpretation of Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” propelled her to international fame, performs Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No. 5 in F Minor, BWV 1056. The program closes with Schumann’s Fourth Symphony. The film features captivating images of and inspired by the people of Newark, and is presented in 4K anamorphic widescreen.

“EMERGE Part 2” premieres May 26.

Inon Barnatan brings his “penetrating musicianship, compelling interpretive insight and elegant pianism” (BBC Music) to Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement. Zhang pairs the celebrated American concerto with Mozart’s Symphony No. 39.

The film features dance performances by local dancers Cori Barnes and M.A. Taylor, behind the scenes images of the NJSO musicians, and is presented in black-and-white 4K Ultra HD.

“EMERGE Part 3” premieres June 23

He performs Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto, which also features NJSO Assistant Principal Trumpet Anderson Romero. Zhang brings the series to a close with Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony.

The film features riveting images of and inspired by the people of New Jersey, presented in 4K Ultra HD.

For 21 seasons, Alvin Ailey has been a beloved tradition at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). Although we can’t gather in person this year, NJPAC has something special honoring MOTHERS: a virtual screening of Alvin Ailey’s new dance film, “Revelations Reimagined.”

Whether your family is near or far, tune in and remember the feeling of live performance. This presentation is a thank you to everyone who has enjoyed Alvin Ailey at NJPAC in the past—and a hopeful reminder of all the soul-stirring performances yet to come.

“Revelations Reimagined” explores “Revelations” in a new context: past and present, on stage and off, a cultural treasure that transformed modern dance forever and continues to reinvent itself. The beloved Ailey masterpiece pays tribute to African-American heritage — “sometimes sorrowful, sometimes jubilant, but always hopeful” — and to the power of the human spirit.

ARTISTS SPEAK OUT IN SUPPORT OF ASIAN COMMUNITY

    NAAP STATEMENT

Our mission has always focused our support on the performing arts, while also building a safe place in our community. In the wake of not just last week’s event, but the multiple horrible attacks in recent memory, we at NAAP want to reach out to our friends and members who are feeling anger, grief, confusion and experiencing various levels of trauma as a result of these horrendous and random attacks. It is further troubling to try to grasp the idea that this is happening due to an unprecedented and wildly inaccurate sourcing of misinformation targeted toward our ethnic origin. This pain and grief affect all of us and to have this happening during an historic and disastrous pandemic, makes all of this an even more heightened tragedy. Like any family, we encourage everyone to please take care of each other and look out for one another. We are asking that you make that extra effort to check in on friends, family, elders, and, please, don’t be afraid to use your voices and share your opinions and thoughts.”

“A Stage for All the World of Asian –Americans”- Mel Gussow, The New York Times

“I became fascinated by how this Asian American man who had somehow become the confidant to the most famous person in Hollywood could also end up imprisoned as a Japanese spy. As more Asian-American stories are being discovered, rediscovered, and amplified, the time feels right to share Toraichi Kono’s story and reclaim his place in Asian-American history.” = Philip W. Chung, Playwright

The Pan Asian Repertory Theatre (Tisa Chang, Founding Artistic Director), continuing their educational initiative, presents a reading of the new play, “My Man Kono” by Philip W. Chung.

Directed by Jeff Liu, the 8-member cast will feature David Dean Bottrell, Katie Lee Hill, Lily Holleman, David Lee Huynh, Zach Lusk, Jonathan Medina, Ron Nakahara, and Armin Shimerman. The FREE virtual presentation is set for Friday, April 2, 2021 beginning at 5:00PM (EST). Follow this Link to access the reading: cccforms.gle/43uwwRnatiM3QDHA8

“My Man Kono” is based on the life of Toraichi Kono, who worked as Charlie Chaplin’s personal valet for two decades before being arrested as an enemy spy during the anti-Japanese hysteria of World War II. “My Man Kono” was awarded second place in the East West Players’ Pacific Century Playwriting Competition.

Playwright Philip W. Chung shared this about his new play,” I had no idea Toraichi Kono existed until I attended a Charlie Chaplin retrospective at the L.A. County Museum of Art. “The Adventurer” was one of the shorts screened and I noticed an Asian man in the film playing the chauffeur of Chaplin’s character. I was surprised to see an Asian in a non-stereotypical role in a 1917 Hollywood production and wondered who this was.”
