    MOVIE REVIEW Mr. Holmes

STORY: Sherlock Homes is 93 – as his memory fades, will Holmes find his last case quite so elementary?

REVIEW: An aged Sherlock Holmes (McKellen) has retired to a country cottage where, instead of criminals, bee-keeping occupies his time. His housekeeper, Mrs. Monroe (Laura), wants to leave but her young son Roger (Milo) is a huge Sherlock fan. What happens when Holmes teaches Roger about keeping bees – while losing his memories?

CAST: Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Milo Parker, Hattie Morahan, Patrick Kennedy
    DIRECTION: Bill Condon
    GENRE: Drama
    DURATION: 2 hours 4 minutes

Mr. Holmes is an ironic new spin on iconic Sherlock Holmes which, instead of a deerstalker, raises a wry old eyebrow at the best-selling brand of Baker Street. Ian McKellen’s creaking antique Holmes, a direct contrast to Robert Downey Jr’s sexily pouting, super-athletic Sherlock, underlines a real man, as wheezy as an old harmonium. The veteran McKellen is superb as Sherlock, trailing his own memory, luminescent when he remembers, growling when he can’t. Laura Linney puts on a lovely, lemony Mrs. Monroe, softly sweet but troubled by her own memories. As young Roger, who lives in the bright sunshine of now, Milo walks a dramatic tightrope with flawless, natural ease, fascinated by a legend, then appreciating a fragile old man.

Alongside wonderful acting, the cinematography captures an enchantingly pretty country, lush green gardens, busy London streets, towering white cliffs, winding steamy trains. The editing, cutting from 1947 to 1917, is swift, but the narrative is actually too rich – a Japan track detracts from Holmes’ last case, involving a mysterious Mrs. Kelmot (Hattie) and her suspicious husband (Patrick). Holmes’ time travelling is excellent -McKellen presents a crisp, dapper Sherlock, from whose body 30 years fall neatly away, donning tails and top hat to stalk London with elegant determination. Had the narrative only moved across time, not continents, the impact of such acting would be far greater.

However, the philosophy of this tale, inspired by the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, charms. At the end of his career, his powers fading, Holmes faces his greatest challenge. Having always dismissed emotions while underlining “Logic is rare”, Holmes now needs love to crack his last case.

“Khushiyan” Maker Tirlok Malik’s “On Golden Years” Receives Viewers’ Acclaim

    [vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”nivo” interval=”3″ images=”44533,44534,44535,44536,44537,44538,44540,44541,44542″ onclick=”link_image” custom_links_target=”_self” title=”On Golden Years” img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

FALLS CHURCH, VA (TIP): Human beings in all ages and climes grapple with situations and often face queer dilemmas. Aruba faced a dilemma whether or not he should fight against his kith and kin. Hamlet faced a dilemma: “To be or not to be’. And, in our own times, Indians living abroad also face a set of dilemmas. New York Emmy Award nominated filmmaker Tirlok Malik has focused on the set of dilemmas faced by Indian Americans in his film ‘On Golden Years’ which was premiered here at DC Cinemas, July 19.

Malik, widely regarded as the pioneer of independent cinema and of movies which portray the Indian-American immigrant experience, was elated with the response for the event. Over 300 eminent members of the Indian and larger South Asian community flocked to the Loehmann’s Plaza on a sweltering Sunday, typical for July.

Fortunately, the film was like a breath of fresh air focusing on an issue that one seldom, if at all, sees on celluloid: the lives of Indian-Americans post-retirement, their emotional highs and lows!

Categorized as a romantic comedy, the 85-minute film, in English, was shot at the Shantiniketan Ashram, a sprawling and scenic retirement residence in Tavares, Florida, which currently houses 174 condominiums. The visuals of the complex are stunning and the camera masterfully dwells on the awe-inspiring landscape and the aesthetically pleasing architecture.

‘On Golden Years’ is written and directed by Malik and produced by Iggy Ignatius. The talented cast members, based primarily in New York, include Ranjit Chowdhry, Jyoti Singh, Noor Naghmi, Reeves Lehmann, Shetal Shah, Professor Indrajit Singh Saluja, Lovllien Kaurr, Indu Gajwani, Shruti Tewari, Farokh Daruwala, Kamlesh Gupta and Sandeep Suri. The film also stars Malik who dons many caps as an actor, writer, director, producer, speaker and entrepreneur – he is the CEO of Apple Productions, Inc., and has recently launched a web-sitewww.nritvfilmclub.com for streaming Indian-American movies and promoting new talent.

Speaking to journalists, prior to the screening, about the purpose of the film, Malik explained, “When we come to America, we tend to think that when the time comes to retire, we will go back to India. But, the reality is we can’t and don’t go back. The film imparts the message: live your golden years without any regret”.

He noted, “We have a lot of issues: India versus America, contentedness versus regrets. This film deals with those issues while encouraging everyone to live life to the fullest”.

Malik told us, “All my films have revolved around NRI (Non-Resident Indian) conflicts. We all have conflicts when we migrate. My first film was ‘Lonely in America’ (1992) which spoke about how we can accept the American dream, but have a difficult time accepting the culture”. His second film, in the same trilogy, was Khushiyaan (2011) about “how we leave our aging parents behind in India and come to America, and one day learn of their death. ‘On Golden Years’ is about the retirement of the American dream”, he said. “So, all my films deal with that emotional conflict of being Indian-American”.

He concurred when we pointed out that the wheel has come full circle from ‘Lonely in America’ to ‘On Golden Years’.

To his immense credit, Malik has nurtured promising artistes. “I have always given a chance to new talent”, he told us. “My whole focus has been on creating the NRI world, basically”, he said.

Noor Naghmi, who plays a prominent part in the film, has extensive experience in theater, radio, television, and on celluloid. “I have done anything which pays”, he quips.

Onscreen, he played the role of Shyam who is very lonely after his beloved wife’s death. “He is a very romantic character and that’s the reason I loved the role”, Naghmi told us.

Perhaps the most poignant scene in the film is between Shyam and his deceased wife, Anita (Shruti Tewari), in which she gently encourages him to move on with his life.

We asked Naghmi, What was it like working with Tirlok Malik? He replied, “As a director, he is very stern which is good. At the same time, he does allow improvisation. That is good for me because I am a method actor. I like to create and improvise”.

He gushed, “The whole experience I had working with him and the entire team was amazing! For 30 days, we were like family living together. We were working and having fun”, sans any stress or pressure.

Actress Jyoti Singh was initially skeptical about playing a character considerably older than her, and concerned that she maybe typecast in such roles. Once she set her reservations aside and accepted the part, it was all about delivering her best and bonding with the team!

“I am thankful to Mr. Malik for giving me the opportunity to act in the film which has drama, comedy, love, life”, she told us. “I especially like the way he directs and we all work in a professional environment”. About the cast and crew, she said, “We lived at Shantiniketan and shared some wonderful moments during the making of the film”.

Jyoti admitted she was “extremely nervous” at first about being paired with the immensely talented actor Ranjit Chowdhry, who also played the lead in ‘Lonely in America’ and prominent parts in Indian comedy classics such as Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Baton Baton Mein’ (1979) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Khubsoorat’ (1980). Fortunately, he put her at ease with his great sense of humor.

Professor Indrajit Singh Saluja plays the role of a jovial Sikh senior who loves his wife (Lovllien Kaurr). He “is fiercely proud of his Indian roots and takes pride in the country of his birth”, he told us.

“The point that has been made through my character is: “You may take an Indian out of India, but you cannot take India out of an Indian”, he said.

About Malik, Reeves Lehmann declared, “he is my favorite director”!

Speaking to us at the film’s premiere, Lehmann said, “I am very excited about the event here. I had a fabulous time working with the rest of the cast. It was a wonderful experience”.

In the film, he plays the role of Jacob, “a retired civil rights attorney married to this beautiful Indian woman (Shetal Shah) and we have the best relationship”, he said. “We just enjoy being with each other throughout the film”.

Interestingly, Lehmann is Chairman of the Film Division at the renowned School of Visual Arts (SVA), in New York, and among his students was Indian actor Ranbir Kapoor.

We discovered that Iggy Ignatius is one-of-a-kind: film producer; entrepreneur — he owns Shantiniketan; actor – he has a cameo in ‘On Golden Years’; discerning author – the film is inspired by his book, ‘Seeking Roots’, which he wrote in 2008 prior to the establishment of the retirement residence. “At that time, it was a total fiction about how life would be in Shantiniketan”, he says, about the book. It was a vision which bore fruition!

We asked him what motivated him to get involved with the film. “Basically, this concept of togetherness after retirement” which the film conveys, he replied. “Based on current life expectancy rates, people live 20-30 years after retirement. They lead a good life, they have money. You have to discover each other, not brood over children all the time”, he reasoned.

Ignatius appeared fascinated by an episode of Oprah Winfrey’s television show which featured Pastor Rob Bell and his wife Kristen who co-wrote a compelling book, ‘Zimzum of Love’, about the deeper mysteries of marriage. Zimzum is a Hebrew word that represents the space God created outside of Himself in order to make room for the Universe. The authors believe both partners should make a conscious decision to create space outside of themselves in order to make room for the other and to prioritize their life together. “In retrospect, ‘On Golden Years’ is about reliving the Zimzum”, Ignatius said.

Noor Naghmi was the gracious host of the film’s premiere here. On hand, at the event were: Mr. Shiv Ratan, Counsul, Community Affairs at the Indian Embassy; Nadeem Hotiani, Press Attache at the Pakistan Embassy, renowned ghazal and Sufi singer Mrs. Vatsala Mehra; renowned Pakistan film star Reema Khan, famous Pakistan TV Star Bindiya, independent filmmaker Manan Singh Katohora; Pushpa Agnihotri, All India Radio, Delhi, Yasmin and Abul Hasan Naghmi, founders of Society of Urdu Literature, USA, Dr. Tariq Shahab, Manoj and Geeta Singh, organizers of the DC South Asian Film Festival coming up September 25-27. West Virginia based eminent eye Surgeon Dr. V. K. Raju hastened from India where he had gone to deliver Nani Palkhiwala Memorial lecture at Chennai, to be at the premier.

Indian and Pakistani media were present in strength. Lalit Jha from Press Trust of India (PTI), Arun Kumar from Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) and Walker Syed from EYE 95 America were among those present.

The sponsors who generously supported the event included EYE 95 Television Network (Grand sponsor), Dr. Farida Khattak, DDS Dynamic Family Dentistry Noor Naghmi New York Life, SAI Mortgage , KEY Title, Nirala Sweets, Jyoti Gujral, NRI TV Film Club, Society of Urdu Literature (SOUL) , Golden Key Realty, The Indian Panorama, and Shalimar House, a retirement community.

Dr. Zulfiquar Kazmi did a wonderful job as the master of ceremonies.

It is learnt that requests are pouring in from various parts of USA to screen the film and there are plans to screen the film in a couple of cities across U.S. in the next few months. So, watch out for the screening in your city.

  • ZEEL is the only media company to feature in Forbes India’s maiden list of ‘India’s Super 50 Companies’

ZEEL is the only media company to feature in Forbes India’s maiden list of ‘India’s Super 50 Companies’

The latest issue of Forbes India (dated July 24, 2015) features Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) in its maiden list of ‘India’s Super 50 Companies’. ZEEL is the only media company to feature in this prestigious list.

In this list (which is not a ranking), Forbes India has picked companies not just on the basis of size or profits, but also for robustness and consistency. These companies have had the gumption to think differently, disrupt the market and also get their act together even after suffering setbacks with the result that the stock markets have rewarded them handsomely.

Forbes India, with knowledge support from PwC India, adopted a robust, multi-stage process to select India’s Super 50 Companies. At the first stage, a set of eliminators was employed to arrive at a critical mass of strong contenders. Out of all listed companies on the stock exchanges, Forbes India then selected those with a market capitalization of more than Rs. 10,000 crore (as on March 31, 2015). All PSUs were eliminated and only the top two companies from any business group were included. These remaining companies were further evaluated on another set of parameters which included shareholder returns exhibited on the stock exchange over a three-year period, sales growth and return on equity. As a final check, Forbes India considered those companies which were more consistent than others – in the context of the parameters – and used relevant eliminators to remove the outliers, thus arriving at a strong list of companies that comprise the first-ever Super 50 listing.

Other notable companies on the list include Asian Paints, Axis Bank, Britannia Industries, Godrej Consumer Products, Hindustan Unilever, Pfizer, Tata Motors, TCS and Yes Bank, amongst others.

  • I love NY | MOVIE REVIEW

I love NY | MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Chicago guy Randhir Singh (Sunny Deol) is commitment phobic. New York girl Tiku Verma (Kangana Ranaut) doesn’t believe that she can be happy. Fate brings the two together, challenging the perception they hold about themselves.

REVIEW: Since Tiku’s parents are no more, loneliness gets to her and makes her settle with Ishaan, her wannabe Anglicised douchebag boyfriend. He is high-handed, unreasonable and disrespects her but she makes a compromise, hoping to feel loved and wanted.

Incidentally, on New Year’s Eve as she returns to her apartment, she finds a drunk stranger (Randhir) in her bed! Apparently, Randhir who is all set to marry girlfriend Riya (Tannishtha Chatterjee) after being single for the longest time, gets drunk and accidentally boards the flight to NY.

This hard to believe story gets weirder when his building, flat number in Chicago and even house keys match the ones of Kangana. Terribly Hungover, he enters her house thinking it’s his own and that jeopardises Tiku’s relationship with Ishaan. Randhir tries to mend things but things only escalate further.

The plot tries to touch upon the thought that how one can find solace in the company of complete strangers, who at times end up understanding you more than your loved ones. Randhir and Tiku’s chance encounter, strange bond and mutual admiration which finally culminates into friendship and love is bizarre yet believable.

Kangana is delightful to watch. She did this film before Queen happened, proving she always had it in her. What a performer she is turning out to be. Your heart goes out to her when she tells Randhir “Ishaan pe mat jao, Baaki log meri kaafi izzat karte hai’. Sensible, real, funny…she is your quintessential girl-next-door.

Sunny Deol looks odd for the role he’s cast in but delivers an earnest performance, which helps him sail through.

It’s a pity that certain multiplexes cancelled shows of this film, owing to low occupancy for its actually a decent romcom that you won’t mind watching once. And it doesn’t look stale either.

  • THE GALLOWS MOVIE REVIEW

    THE GALLOWS MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Four teenagers find themselves trapped in their high school at night. Three of the four had attempted to vandalize the sets of their school play called ‘The Gallows’. A mysterious being – either real or supernatural – tries to prevent them from escaping alive.

REVIEW: The found footage horror sub-genre came into its own back when we saw The Blair Witch Project. There has been a clutch of films since then that serve up cinematic variations of found footage fare. Some work, some don’t. The Gallows lies somewhere in between.

It starts off with a perfectly good premise, with a minimum of jump scares and a location (trapped in a nightmarish high school at night) that sets the scene for an eventful time, to say the least. Ryan (Shoos) is the archetypical school bully-cum-jock who was seemingly born with a camera strapped to his hand and a gift for verbal diarrhea. Neither his girlfriend, cheerleader Cassidy (Gifford) nor his best buddy Reese (Mishler) seems to mind Ryan’s motor-mouth though.

An accident during a staging of the play in 1993 resulted in the death of Charlie (Cross), a student at that time. His then-girlfriend was devastated and the blame was placed on some students rather than a mechanical malfunction. Many years later in 2013, Charlie’s ghost it seems (Or perhaps a flesh-and-blood murderer?) seeks revenge.

There are a few unexplained elements. Given that the camera work is all point-of-view – shot by the students -there are scenes where it appears that some other person is holding the camera. Also, why would the grudge vendetta be passed on to poor Reese? And why doesn’t Ryan keep his mouth shut for a few moments at least, thereby allowing his admittedly more intelligent buddies and girlfriend to get a word in edgeways, even as they are running for their lives? Furthermore, since when are spirits captured on ordinary handheld cameras? That said however, the sound mixing as well as the use of light and shadow in deliberately claustrophobic conditions is effective and serves up a decent amount of scares.

  • ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ to release in Pakistan this Eid

‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ to release in Pakistan this Eid

Salman Khan’s “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” has become the first film revolving around the Indo-Pak theme to get a clearance for a screening in Pakistan this Eid.

The Pakistan Central Censor Board has given a go ahead to the Kabir Khan-directed movie, about an Indian man’s attempt to help a young, speech-impaired girl from Pakistan return to her homeland with some cuts.

Bollywood films revolving around Indo-Pak themes face trouble when it comes to their release in the country and recently Salman’s “Ek Tha Tiger”, Saif Ali Khan’s “Agent Vinod”, “Haider”, “Baby” and “Tere Bin Laden” failed to get a release in Pakistan.

The Chairman of the Central Board of Film Censors Mobashir Hasan said that “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” has been approved for Eid release by the CBFC but with several cuts.

“We recommended these cuts after thorough discussion by our panel which comprises members of natural security agencies, film critics and members of the civil society.”

Hasan revealed that since the CBFC is a regulatory body, determining the time of release of a film doesn’t fall within its jurisdiction, but that it has “approved” the movie for Eid.

He said that so far, the Board has not gotten any instructions from the Information Ministry for the film’s release to be delayed or restricted.

Satish Anand, the chief executive of Eveready Pictures, played down reports that the Lahore censor board still had not given clearance for the exhibition of the film in Punjab.

Nadeem Mandviwalla, a well known distributor and exhibitor, told PTI that the CBFC doesn’t hold the power to censor the film across Pakistan after the passing of the 18th Amendment and subsequent decentralization of censor boards. He said presently, all the cinemas in the Islamabad Capital Territory, Khyber Pakthunkhawa province and cantonments around the country come within the CBFC’s ambit.

Mandviwalla played down media reports that the Pakistani film industry personalities were pressuring the government to delay the release of “Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” as some major Pakistani films were slated for release at Eid as well.
The two big Pakistani releases include “Wrong No” and “Bin Roye,” and they are bound to face stiff competition with the Salman-starrer during the Eid holidays.

HUM films, which have produced “Bin Roye,” are said to be keen to have no international competition at Eid. “Bin Roye” is the second film appearance for the popular Mahira Khan, who is making her Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in “Raees.”
After a premiere in Dubai, it will release in Indian theaters on Eid. Mahira and Fawad Khan have become popular faces in India thanks to the success of their serial “Humsafar.”

Salman Khan hit-and-run case hearing adjourned again!!! till July 20

The Bombay High Court adjourned the hearing on Salman Khan’s appeal till 20th july. The court deferred the July 1 hearing till July 13 but again adjourned it further.

An appeal has been filed by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan against the five-year sentence awarded to him in the hit-and-run case. Although the ‘paper book’ (compilation of evidence and documents) is ready and copies have been served to both the sides by the court), Salman’s counsel Amit Desai urged for three weeks’ adjournment to check whether the documents were in order. Justice A R Joshi, however, granted adjournment till July 13 to carry out the drill of checking documents.

Currently, the Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor’s lawyers are busy preparing the case papers for the hit-an-run case.

Earlier the Bombay High Court while admitting Salman’s appeal against his conviction posted the matter for June 15, then to July 1 and then to July 13 before adjourning it again to July 20.

On May 6, a Sessions Court had announced a 5-year sentence in the long impending 2002-hit-and-run case in which Khan was involved. Two days after this, the actor, however, was granted bail on May 8 by the Bombay High court and his sentence was five-year long sentence was suspended.

Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Dilwale’ Vs. Salman Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’

Fans have spoken and the verdict is out – SRK-Kajol’s Dilwale is the most awaited film of this year. The film has received 53 percent of the total votes leaving behind Salman – Kareena‘s Bajrangi Bhaijaan with 24 percent votes.

Shahid-Alia’s Shaandaar raked in 7 percent votes while Ranbir-Deepika’s Tamasha came a close fourth with 5 percent votes.

The other films in this race got fewer votes probably because the makers have really guarded the look of their films so fans don’t really have an idea about what the film is all about!

Upcoming Releases : Salman Khan – Kareena Kapoor’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Akshay Kumar – Sidharth Malhotra’s Brothers, Alia Bhatt – Shahid Kapoor’s Shaandaar, Deepika Padukone – Ranveer Singh – Priyanka Chopra’s Bajirao Mastani and Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol’s Dilwale.

  • Terminator Genisys – MOVIE REVIEW

    Terminator Genisys – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: It is 2029 and Resistance leader John Connor (Jason) sends Kyle Reese (Courtney) back to 1984 to safeguard Sarah Connor (Emilia), so that she can give birth to John one day. Skynet, long since self-aware, is now even more powerful. And of course, Skynet will do everything to foil the Resistance. It boils down to a race against time to prevent Judgment Day.

REVIEW: James Cameron’s Terminator became an instant action/sci-fi classic when it hit screens in 1984, with its chillingly bleak, dystopian vision depicting merciless machines wiping out humanity. John Connor was a beacon of hope then.

Genisys now depicts Skynet as a massively evolved cybernetic entity that is almost omnipresent in its own self-created reality as well as the real world. It can not only attack from the future, but from the past too. It can infiltrate the real world at will.

The Resistance is successful in a major offensive aimed at Skynet’s HQ and they capture its time machine. But a Terminator (a pincer-armed T-1000) has already been sent back to kill Sarah Connor. However, another well-aged and very powerful T-800 (Schwarzenegger) who Sarah affectionately calls ‘Pops’ will stop at nothing to protect her from anything Skynet throws at them.

Whether Courtney and Emilia make as much of an impact as Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton did, respectively, isn’t a fair comparison to make; T1 and T2 are on another level. This film occupies a niche of its own – a carefully balanced bit of the old with plenty of spanking new elements. There is a plethora of cross references made to Cameron’s work by way of homage, that any fan who has loved the first two parts, will be able to spot. Oh, and this time, we get to see Byung-hun Lee step into Robert Patrick’s liquid metal shoes as T-1000. It goes without saying that the effects are top-notch. Terminator Genisys overhauls the franchise that made the phrase ‘I’ll be back’ a part of pop culture. More than anything, you’ll watch it for Arnold. For as once promised, he’s indeed, back.

  • Second Hand Husband – MOVIE REVIEW

Second Hand Husband – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Duty manger at a five star hotel, Rajbir (Gippy Grewal) is in love with Gurpreet (Tina Ahuja), a lawyer. The two want to get married but that’s not possible until Rajbir’s divorce with his first wife Neha (Geeta Basra) comes through.

REVIEW: Neha asks for hefty alimony. Rajbir finds her demands unreasonable so starts looking for a guy, who could marry her and fulfil her wishes. His groom-hunting forms the story.

Meanwhile, Rajbir’s boss Ajit Singh (Dharmendra) is struggling to save his own marriage as wife Byant (Rati Agnihotri) is sick and tired of his drunk, womanising ways. Despite the lack of depth in terms of story or character building, Second Hand Marriage is fairly funny in portions, thanks to the antics of Dharmendra and a talented supporting cast comprising Vijay Raaz, Mukesh Tiwari, Ravi Kishan and Sanjay Mishra. Tiwari’s wisecracks and Raaz as a lovelorn inspector in particular, are hilarious.

Punjabi superstar Gippy, who debuts in Bollywood with this film seems overwhelmed by the seniors around. He seems comfortable playing second fiddle to Dharmendra. Govinda’s daughter Tina Ahuja too makes her debut here. She is confident, looks good but needs a meatier role to make her mark. Geeta Basra is pleasant in her new desi avatar. Harbhajan’s cameo towards the end works in the film’s favour as well.

If you do not expect comedy to be too clever, you won’t mind this old-school chaotic caper.

  • Shahid Kapoor & Mira Rajput tie the Knot

Shahid Kapoor & Mira Rajput tie the Knot

Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor on Tuesday, July 7, tied the knot with Delhi-based Mira Rajput at a farmhouse here in a ceremony attended by close family members and a few friends of the couple.

The nuptials drew immense media interest, but Shahid’s wish of keeping all details guarded turned out to be quite successful as the paparazzi largely failed to get a glimpse of either the duo, the wedding proceedings or even the guests.

The 35-year-old “Vivah” actor, wanted it to be a close-knit affair and so, only about 50 people are reported to have been present to witness his union with Mira, 21 and a graduate from Delhi university’s Lady Shri Ram College.

Shahid and Mira, who got engaged earlier this year, reportedly met at a ‘satsang’ as both their families are followers of the religious group Radha Soami Satsang Beas.

After having dated actress Kareena Kapoor Khan for three years and following link-ups with co-stars including Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu, it’s interesting how Shahid — son of veteran actors Pankaj Kapur and his now estranged wife Neelima Azim — has chosen to settle down with a woman who has no previous connection with the film industry.

Earlier this year, while acknowledging his relationship status with Mira, he had shared with the media that “she is a normal girl and I am a normal guy, and we should treat it like something normal and regular”.

According to sources close to the actor, he wanted their wedding also to be a simple affair, and he has left all the glamour and glitz to happen at a grand celebration in Mumbai on July 12. It is likely to be attended by Bollywood celebrities galore.

But before that, a post-wedding celebration is slated for Tuesday night at a luxury hotel, where Shahid has also booked the Presidential Suite, priced at over Rs.600,000 per night, for himself, a source told IANS.

At another hotel, as many as 50 rooms were booked for the wedding guests.

The groom arrived in Delhi only on Monday in time for his sangeet ceremony at a farmhouse, where he was seen dancing away with Mira on the song “Saj dhaj ke tashan mein rehna” — as revealed by some videos that were leaked online. Another image featuring Shahid on one knee, with Mira dancing, went viral after celebrity photographer Rohan Shrestha shared it on Twitter on Monday night.

While Mira wore an Anita Dongre peach and yellow ensemble, Shahid looked suave in a deep red kurta, bandhgala and black pyjama.

After their wedding, the duo has no time for a honeymoon.

Shahid has to return to shoot celebrity dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded”, where he is coming in as a judge. And his film assignments include Vikas Bahl’s “Shaandaar” opposite Alia Bhatt and “Udta Punjab”, which is produced by Vikramaditya Motwane

    Cast:

Nirup Bhandari, who holds the movie and all the charaters around has done neat job for his first venture. Radhika and Avantika’s charaters are backbone of the film. Both have performed well. Anantavelu and Arvind Rao have done a great job in their roles. But it is SaiKumar who steals the show as a post master.

    Music and Background score:

Music by Anup Bhandari is soothing. Recreation of ‘denanna denanna’ from the famous 90’s ‘Guddada Bootha’ serial is the best among all.

Background score by Ajaneesh Loknath is what makes the film reach out to audience and the thrilling journey you go through during the movie stays with you for a long time.

    Cinematography:

Kannada film Industry gets the touch of Hollywood style of cinematography with ‘Rangitaranga’. Lance Kaplan, who has worked in short films like ‘Words’ is the DoP along with our local boy William David. This film proves that India has in itself beautiful locations for any kind of movie.

    Direction:

A promising director has made debut in Kannada Film Industry. Anup Bhandari has also written the script and has taken a big risk to bring such unusual story on screen. The director is successful in keeping the audience glued to their seats before interval. Post interval, the movie becomes a little slow paced with back to back songs. Just when the audience starts feeling bored with too many colorful songs, the director comes back with a bag full of surprises, twists and turns that will eventually reveal the truth.

The movie, overall, is a super thriller and a must watch. It is worth seeing many times and find ourself discovering characters and explore the music and visuals. It is great to see that young directors are coming out from shadows and making quality movies. Hope the trend continues.

    RIDE THE NEW WAVE.

  • JENNIFER, BEN AFFLECK SAY THEY’RE GETTING DIVORCED

JENNIFER, BEN AFFLECK SAY THEY’RE GETTING DIVORCED

As regulars at a local farmer’s market, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and their three young children looked like the perfect Hollywood family.

The stars took turns working so they could nurture their careers and their kids devoted parents who appeared arm-in-arm at countless industry events.

“It’s work, but it’s the best kind of work,” Affleck famously said of his marriage to Garner when he accepted the best picture Oscar for Argo.

Now, it seems the work is done. After weeks of public speculation about their relationship, the couple announced Tuesday they plan to end their 10-year marriage with a divorce.

“We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children,” Garner and Affleck said in a joint statement. “This will be our only comment on this private, family matter.”

Affleck will continue to live on the couple’s property in a separate house, and they will co-parent their children Violet, Seraphina and Samuel, according to a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

  • Child 44 MOVIE REVIEW

    Child 44 MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Leo Demidov (Hardy) is a reputed and respected member of the MGB, the Soviet military police. He falls from grace when he tries to protect the woman he loves, Raisa Demidova (Rapace), from being persecuted. He gets a second chance at restoring his career and reputation when he later investigates and tries to nab the person behind a series of gory killings.

REVIEW: At the beginning of the film, we see Leo flirt with the sublimely attractive Raisa at a dinner table while in the company of friends during one post war party. He doesn’t mince words about how fine he thinks she looks. He is confident on the verge of being blustery. But she brings his feet back on the ground when she corrects him when he calls her by another woman’s name, by mistake. He has no idea about what a pivotal role Raisa will play in his life in the years to come, by which time the two are deeply in love and almost inseparable.

But Leo isn’t just a lover boy; when his friend’s son is murdered, he takes it upon himself to uncover the identity of the criminal who goes about his grisly task with surgical precision. Cinematographer Philippe Rousselot gives Child 44 an authentically bleak and cold look, replete with shades of grey, brown and cloudy blues. The period detailing too is superb. However, Gary Oldman makes a curious choice a Soviet general and the film can drag at times due to its runtime. But that aside, what we do get is a revealing and no-holds-barred look at life behind the Iron Curtain. It busts the myth that the Russians, during the Cold war era, were emotionless propaganda machines.

Tom Hardy has clearly carved a niche for himself as an actor with versatility as his middle name. Right from his breakthrough performance in Inception to Mad Max: Fury Road and now this, if you do decide to watch this film, it will be to check out the kind of realism that Hardy brings to his character.
