Katrina Wants To Be With Boys

Keeps aside a chunk of dates for the much-awaited sequel to the Abhishek- John starrer Dostana Buzz was that Dostana2 has traded its desi girl Priyanka Chopra for Katrina Kaif. Now there are the telltale signs of rumours turning into reality. Katrina, who is shooting for Siddharth Anand’s Bang Bang with Hrithik Roshan, has not signed any other film yet.

It is assumed that she is keeping her dates open for Tarun Mansukhani’s sequel to the 2008 hit. The film is likely to go on floors in late October. The preproduction of the film has already started. A source told us, “Katrina wants to be a part of this heroine-centric film. It will give her a lot of scope to perform. The actress is waiting for the final nod from the producers. She has not allotted any dates between October and January to any other filmmaker.” The much-awaited sequel to Dostana has been in the making for a long time.

Initially there were reports that the script had not shaped up to Karan Johar’s liking. Then there was also the long-drawn casting process, and other than Abhishek and John, no one else had been finalised. Katrina according to reports has been showing her eagerness to take up the project. Other than Bang Bang and Dhoom 3, she has not signed up any new film yet. In the off chance that Kat does not do the film, at least it would not be for the lack of dates or initiative on her part.

  • AMANDA BYNES TO SUE NEW YORK POLICE

AMANDA BYNES TO SUE NEW YORK POLICE

Actress Amanda Bynes says she will sue the New York Police Department (NYPD) after she was arrested last week and charged with many unfair things. The 26-year-old was last week charged in court with attempted evidence tampering, reckless endangerment and marijuana possession, after being arrested at her New York City apartment. However, Bynes insists she did nothing wrong and was unfairly targeted by police, reports contactmusic.com.

In a lengthy rant on Twitter, she wrote: “For once and for all, this is the last thing I’ll say about the mistaken arrest. I’m suing NYPD for illegally entering my apartment, lying about drugs on me and lying about me tampering with non existent drug paraphernalia, then I’m suing for being put into a mental hospital against my will, then locked up overnight for coming home after a facial and working out with my trainer like the good girl that I am. I’m allergic to alcohol and drugs and don’t partake in any of the above.”

“I’m so offended by all of this but so proud to not be a drug or alcohol user. I don’t need to talk about this anymore.” “My lawyer and I are taking this offense so seriously! Everything they did was against the law and the judge saw that there was no drugs on me or proof of any type of bong or mental illness (I was so offended to even be taken to a mental hospital and they would not let me call my lawyer until the next day after being in jail all night, then I went to court and was immediately released because the judge saw that I was wrongly arrested,” Bynes said.

  • MOVIE REVIEW – FAST & FURIOUS 6

    MOVIE REVIEW – FAST & FURIOUS 6

Cast: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker, Michelle
Rodriguez, Luke Evans, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jordana
    Brewster, Gina Carano
    Direction: Justin Lin
    Genre: Action
    Duration: 2 hours 11 minutes

STORY: Dom (Diesel) and Brian (Walker) are in Rio, living it up after bringing down a drug kingpin in the franchise’s previous instalment. They’ve left crime behind, only to be drawn back by the promise of finding alive a loved one (Rodriguez as Letti) they’d thought was dead. But to get to her, they have to hit the streets again. This time, in London. MOVIE REVIEW: We catch up with Dom and his crew as they cool their heels after pulling off their ‘Rio Heist’ and bringing down Braga. Dom has moved on but still pines for Letti.

Brian’s become a family man and father to a baby boy. Agent Hobbs (Johnson) offers a deal: find and bring Owen Shaw, a mercenary trained in vehicular warfare, to justice in return for information on Dom’s thought-dead love and grudgingly, full pardons for his crew, so they can return home to the US. As they embark on a mission for their own purposes, the “family” of speed demons soon finds themselves up against Shaw, an enemy that’s “in the game” and relies solely on “precision and planning” to carry out their assignments.

Letti has lost her memory and we see her become a pawn in Shaw’s game for most of the film. Is the family reunited again? Clocking in at over two hours, the film is filled with all the high-octane speed chases and close combat scenes we’ve come to expect from the franchise. And while it doesn’t disappoint in the outrageously and shamelessly fun bang-em-cars, road rage and the cheesy humour departments, it does drag by taking “detours” and selfdiscovery trip subplots that could easily have been done without.

Lin’s at the helm for the fourth time and the confidence (and over-indulgence, thereof) shows. The girl-on-girl fight scenes are actually more kick-ass than the ones with the guys. Of the supporting cast, Ludacris has the best lines. The new characters impress. That being said, this one’s purely for fans of the franchise and action junkies alike.

  • Movie Review – The Great Gatsby

Movie Review – The Great Gatsby

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan,Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki, Amitabh Bachchan
    Direction: Baz Luhrmann
    Genre: Drama
    Duration: 2 hours 24 minutes.

Story: Jay Gatsby conquers poverty and becomes ‘great’ – but is he good enough for elegant Daisy, married to aristocratic Tom?

Movie Review: Right up, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (TGG) is Hollywood’s Devdas. Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) and Daisy (Mulligan) fall in star-crossed love. Poor and ambitious, Gatsby reinvents himself, but Daisy’s won by aristocratic, womanizing Tom (Edgerton). Jay arrives in 1920s New York, abuzz, as Daisy’s cousin Nick Carraway (Maguire) notes, with a ‘golden roar’. Stocks and skyscrapers are shooting up, prohibitions and morals crashing down. Suddenly-rich Gatsby becomes NY’s newest celeb, throwing his fantastic (Disney-inspired?) mansion open for amazing parties, befriending Nick hoping he’ll bring Daisy back to Gatsby’s life. Which Nick does – but does the party end in whimpers or bangs? Luhrmann’s take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel is a beautiful bash – that lasts too long. On the upside, the music’s super and the 3D – decorating dinners to orgies, advertisements gliding silkily along a taxi – stunning. Add DiCaprio, perfect as the golden, mysterious, toffee-hearted Gatsby, to Maguire – that most wry of observers, the loner at the party – and you’re swept away by the mood. Other performances fit like icecubes – Mulligan conveying Daisy’s soft, deadly uncertainties, Debicki dashing as ironic golf-star Jordan, Amitabh Bachchan shining as gangster Meyer Wolfsheim in a sharp little role, witty as he echoes Gatsby’s deceptions about his folks – “all sadly dead now” – frightening when he shows off the tooth hanging around his neck.

Edgerton begins with OTT-bluster but ends puncturing Gatsby with wounding bluntness. DiCaprio and Edgerton’s duel unpeels the glitter’s ugly core – pre- Depression America was brutally snobbish, ‘old money’ trumping ambitions, everyone romping with corruption, yet few paying.

Luhrmann captures all this from inside a shimmering cocktail glass. His Gatsby is greedily gorgeous and occasionally sags, luxuriating in a 3Dtheatric too many. Still, it showcases Fitzgerald’s drama with flair – a society dancing on a knife’s edge, where everyone drank and romanced too much, but you also heard an odd, wistful sigh – maar daala.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: The Reluctant Fundamentalist

    MOVIE REVIEW: The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Cast: Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer
    Sutherland, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi
    Direction: Mira Nair
    Genre: Thriller
    Duration: 2 hours 12 minutes

STORY: The film is a gripping adaptation of Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid’s acclaimed novel on conflicting ideologies and a search for identity, beyond religion.

REVIEW: Can you be who you really are when the world around you forces you to believe otherwise? 9/11 changed the West’s perception of Islam forever. While various films have had the unsettling issue as a backdrop, Mira Nair’s riveting adaptation goes way deeper. Its sensitive yet unsubtle narrative succeeds at retaining the book’s ambiguity, as well as raising pertinent questions on Islamic fundamentalism, emigration and USA’s interference in Pakistan. Nair captures the finer nuances of the thought-provoking tale with great conviction. Hard-working immigrant Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed) is happy living his American dream. Confident and talented, he’s considered as a promising financial analyst at the renowned Wall Street business valuation firm, Underwood Samson. While he’s busy climbing the corporate ladder and finding love in Erica (Hudson), an artist, the twin towers are attacked. As a Muslim in the US, the act of extreme violence not only shatters hopes of Changez’s bright future, but also makes him question his ideologies, objectivity and identity. The beauty of the film lies in the depiction of its protagonist’s unspoken words, suppressed emotions and unwavering beliefs. The incredibly talented Riz Ahmed enables the film to deconstruct the meaning of ‘fundamentalism’, which forms the core of the story. What leaves you in awe of the adapted screenplay is its brilliantly drawn parallels between Changez’s personal, political and social situation. You feel his pain, vulnerability, denial, inner turmoil and psychological conflict. The film keeps you thoroughly engaged, even in parts where the pace drops a bit. While the film is more of a thriller, it doesn’t cease to be a human drama, thanks to sublime supporting performances from Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer Sutherland, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi and Meesha Shafi. The music is soulful. Songs like Kangna, Bijli Aaye ya na aaye help build the mood. Cinematography is impressive and in sync with Nair’s trademark style of storytelling. Poignant and relevant, the film will Pakistan differently.

    ANGELINA’S DOC BLOGS MASTECTOMY DETAILS

Angelina Jolie’s doctor has written the details of the actress’ double mastectomy with the aim of helping women understand the preventive treatment. Dr Kristi Funk wrote that just four days after the 37-year-old star underwent her mastectomies, she was pleased to find Jolie in good spirits with bountiful energy, and saw her working with freshly assembled storyboards on her walls for the next movie that she is about to direct, the Guardian reported. Funk asserted in her blog that all the while that Jolie spoke, six drains were dangling from her chest, three on either side, fastened to an elastic belt around her waist.

The Oscar-winner got both her breasts removed on February 16 at the Pink Lotus Breast Centre in Beverly Hills, California, to reduce her breast cancer risk from 87 percent to 5 percent. Despite her fame and constant hounding by media, her treatment remained a secret until Tuesday, when she herself chose to reveal about it in a New York Times article. She approved Funk’s account of her treatment to help women at high cancer risk and to help them understand what is involved if they choose to undergo surgery rather than regular scans and preventive drugs as a way of managing their risk.

Actress Bipasha Basu, who will next feature in an athletic avatar in Vikram Bhatt’s “Creature”, has taken to the TRX Rip trainer, a portable training tool, to develop a toned physique for the film. TRX Rip trainer is a huge fad in Singapore and the 34-year-old feels that the tool will help her in attaining a “leaner and toned” body.

“I saw TRX Rip training in Singapore and I bought it. I will start shooting for my thriller ‘Creature’ from June and I need a particular kind of body for the film. I have to be much leaner and toned. I had put on a little weight for my last film ‘Aatma’ and need to lose that,” Bipasha said in a statement. “Rip Training utilizes a lever bar and resistance cord that challenges the body in all three planes of motion – reps, sets and workout.

It utilizes the same asymmetrical loading we encounter every day, like carrying groceries, picking up your child, throwing a ball, or performing athletic movements such as swimming, running, and biking,” she added. • MOVIE REVIEW – Aashiqui 2

    MOVIE REVIEW – Aashiqui 2

Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor
    Direction: Mohit Suri
    Genre: Romance
    Duration: 2 hours 13 minutes

STORY: A fading singing sensation finds new purpose in life when he falls in love with a talented singing aspirant. But the blitzkrieg of stardom makes, breaks and shakes their love story.

MOVIE REVIEW: He sings. She sings. He, for his stardom. She, for her supper. And the twain meet. In a restrobar, where she croons and he swoons. And Aashiqui is born. Again! Retelling the celebrity story that stardom ain’t an easy ride. It sometimes vrooms and then goes sputter, the fuel of celebdom often running out. Like Rahul Jaykar (Aditya) discovers; once basking in a ‘rockstar’ like status, but soon losing it to alcohol, addiction and self-deprecation.

But when he meets budding singer Aarohi (Shraddha), his heart finds a new beat and his crumbling life finds a cause. He trains her to become the Nightingale of India; she shines while he stays her shadow; sometimes sober, mostly stoned. The real lyric of this story is their romance, pulsating with passion and intensity – on high notes and ‘higher spirits’.

Suri’s musical love story doesn’t bear much semblance to the original ‘Aashiqui’; instead it finds its own rhythm. He pitches the story with old-world romance, high-drama and well-crafted heart-breaking moments. Aarohi’s character is endearing and Rahul stays ‘bottled’ (like ‘Devdas’ with a cause), with sudden outbursts.

The story slows down in parts and the climax might seem unreal to many, but maybe a ‘fix’ for die-hard aashiqs. Aditya is likeable in mushy moments, he shows intensity in flashes but sometimes loses grip. A mature role like this demands a lot, nonetheless, it’s a good effort. Shraddha looks innocently beautiful. Letting her emotions play out brilliantly in high-strung scenes with supreme confidence.

This is a talent to look out for. The jodi’s palpable chemistry heightens the drama. The music is the strongest supporting cast, with captivating tunes like Tum Hi Ho (Arijit Singh), Sunn Raha Hai (Ankit Tiwari) and Bhula Dena (Mustafa Zahid) pouring more passion in to the story. This could be good soup for the lovers’ soul – with a dash of old-world flavour.

  • MOVIE REVIEW – MUD

    MOVIE REVIEW – MUD

Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Tye
    Sheridan, Jacob Lofland
    Direction: Jeff Nichols
    Genre: Drama
    Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes

STORY: Two friends meet a man hiding out in the woods who’s on the run. They help him try and escape to freedom and to reunite with his lady love.

MOVIE REVIEW: Ellis ( Tye Sheridan) and his best friend Neckbone ( Jacob Lofland) are a 21st century Huckleberry Finn-style duo. They ride scooters, fish, sail, know every inch of their Arkansas hometown and even find a secret hideaway on an island – a boat stuck atop a tree! But their island idyll and the boat have an inhabitant. His name is Mud. Tattooed, superstitious, dishevelled and packing a .45 calibre, Mud (McConaughey) tells the boys that he’s a fugitive, dodging bounty-hunting assassins. He’s also trying to trace his girl Juniper (Witherspoon, oozing sex appeal) who’s a hoochie gal with a soft heart for bad boys.

Mud makes a deal with the two – he offers Neck his .45 in return for food. Intrigued and charmed in equal measure, the boys agree. But is Mud a man worth helping? Is he a good guy caught between a rock and a hard place or a scoundrel with no scruples, who plays the sympathy card well? A grizzled Sam Shephard – a deadshot with a sniper rifle – knows Mud since childhood and warns the kids about him. But Ellis, who’d like to see Mud and Juniper reunite, and Neck, the deadpan-delivery voice of reason, pay no heed.

A coming-of-age story with more than a few moments of menace, the film’s languid pace matches the humid atmosphere of the Mississippi delta setting. The visuals are amazing, with a tinge of surrealism. The cinematography is lush and the dialogues deftly delivered. The Southern folks embody values like trust, a good work ethic, honesty and loyalty. Ellis is, however, the true hero of this film.

VIDYA BALAN: CANNES I PULL IT OFF IN A SAREE?

Anxious Vidya calls up Sabya to work out a slam-proof look for her Red Carpet stint. On April 24 morning, Vidya Balan was chosen to be a part of the nine-member jury, headed by Steven Spielberg, at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The actress, who was busy shooting for a special song at Filmalaya studio for Ghanchakkar, did not have enough time to field media queries about the honour. But she did have time to make that one very critical call: to the man who has turned her into the biggest brand ambassador of the saree, Sabyasachi.

Given that Vidya has never had an easy relationship with the fashion police, and how the Cannes red carpet comes under the severest scrutiny, sources close to the actress say she has been quite anxious about her high-profile appearance. When she called Sabya with a mix of excitement and apprehension, the feeling was mutual. A friend of the actress said: “Sabyasachi is very excited to be a part of Vidya’s big moment.

They have become thick friends over the years and Vidya trusts the designer blindly when it comes to designing her sarees. However, Sabya is a bit nervous this time, as he doesn’t want anything to go wrong on the red carpet.” The designer called up Nisha Kundnani, an independent stylist who has worked with Aamir and Kiran Rao in the past. A source added: “Sabya requested Nisha to carry alternative options for Vidya, in case there were last-minute changes.”

I Don’t Want To Do Glamorous Roles: Mallika Sherawat

Mallika Sherawat may be known for her bold roles and glamorous item numbers but the actress now wants to do performance-oriented films. “Now I want to do performanceoriented roles. I don’t want to do glamorous roles and item songs. It is a conscious decision that I have taken. I do get lots of offers for item songs and glam roles but it is a deliberate choice not to do it,” she said.

In an image overhaul, Mallika will be seen in a complete desi avatar in her upcoming film ‘Dirty Politics’, where she essays the role of Anokhi Devi, based on Jodhpur’s Bhanwari Devi, who was killed under mysterious circumstances after her alleged relationship with politicians. The film directed by KC Bokadia, stars Om Puri, Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, Ashutosh Rana in key roles. In her last release ‘Kismat Love Paisa Dilli’, she played the role of a girl-next-door. The film bombed at the box office.

Despite having starred in Bollywood films like ‘Murder’, ‘Bachke Rehna Re Baba’, ‘Pyar Ke Side Effects’, ‘Welcome’, ‘Ugly Aur Pagli’ among others, it’s Mallika’s item numbers that have kept her on the film map. Also, there were reports that Mallika had moved to Los Angeles to focus on a Hollywood career but she denies it. “I have not moved to LA. It is not true that I have shifted my base there. I was doing a movie ‘Politics of Love’ hence I went there but that was only for shooting. Apart from that I do go for parties and socialdos,” she said.

Ileana will star opposite Akshay Kumar, who after the success of Rowdy Rathore, is working with Bhansali again. A source told TOI, “Ileana started getting numerous film offers after being noticed for her role in Barfi!. Ramesh Taurani signed her for Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Phata Poster… and now she has bagged Gabbar.” The film will go on floors by the end of the year after Akshay finishes filming Milan Luthria’s Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai…Again and Ashwin Varde’s Boss.

Talking about the film, the source added, “Akshay and Ileana’s chemistry will be interesting to watch. It is quite an unlikely pairing, which Bhansali is trying to explore. Akshay plays the lead role in the film where he fights against corruption.”
