NICE PHASE TO BE IN BOLLYWOOD NOW: KAJOL

With artistes getting their due credit in Bollywood now, superstar Kajol says it’s the best time for an actor to be in the Hindi film industry.

Kajol, 41, who made a comeback on the silver screen after a gap of five years with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Dilwale’, said Bollywood has films for every performer be it male or female dominated. “Our film industry is in a wonderful phase, where we are at right now. As actors, we have a world in front of us. “Male, female, hero, heroine and what we used to call character actors, everybody has the chance to have a film that centres around them with nobody taking away anything from anyone. Right now, it’s a nice place to be an actor,” Kajol said. Asked her opinion on the female pay disparity in Bollywood and Hollywood, the ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ star said it’s a global issue. “I think it’s definitely prevalent in Bollywood. It’s world over. It’s a male dominated business. I also think we have a Meryl Streep, who has done ‘Mamma Mia!’. We have Julia Roberts, who has done ‘Notting Hill’. I cried in ‘Skyfall’ after watching Judi Dench. We have so many actresses, who have done so much fantastic work today despite being paid less.”

Kajol said it’s completely fine for a middle-aged actress if she is not getting to play a college girl. “If you talk about typical typecast of a herione, may be they cannot currently play a 16-year-old bubbly girl and rejecting or not getting roles, that is perfectly fine. You have to find a film that works for you.” But the mother of two is happy that the scenario is different in the small screen. “TV has only women-centric shows. On these shows, men are playing the side roles.

  • DILWALE | MOVIE REVIEW

    DILWALE | MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: SRK is Kali in Bulgaria and Raj in Goa; Kajol is Meera in Bulgaria and Mata Hari otherwise. They hate the fact that they love each other so much…

DILWALEmovREVIEW: Rohit Shetty’s films are big-ticket adventures; a genre unto themselves. Low on content — plot lines borrowed (in this case Hum and Kasme Vaade), incohesive screenplay and lowbrow dialogues (Sajid-Farhad) — the film leans heavily on Shah Rukh’s mega-stardom, Varun’s effervescence, breathtaking locales (Iceland and Bulgaria), orchestrated car chases and over-the-top situations, which have you chuckling.

Raj, a car modifier from Goa dotes on his younger brother, Veer (Varun), who is happy-go-lucky, romantic and lives in fear of his big bro. When Veer crosses paths with a lunatic don, King, whose henchmen are peddling drugs across an open counter in broad daylight, the baddies beat him up. In retaliation, his bade bhaiyya wears a hood and pummels the goondas to pulp. He leaves a warning, “King ko bolo Kali aaya tha.” OMG! That’s when you realise that Raj has a past.

Cut to Bulgaria, 15 years ago. A young Kali is zipping around in mean machines pulling off heists. He oversteps, when he robs gold belonging to his father Randhir’s (Vinod Khanna) mafia rival Malik (Kabir Bedi). Malik hollers, “Randhir’s trump card is Kali. Finish him.”

This is followed by a turn of events. Kali knocks down a pretty tourist called Meera (Kajol). The accident injures her leg and his heart. After some foolhardiness and the hauntingly-shot Gerua, he discovers that she is no damsel in distress. She’s opposition. His big, brown eyes beg for love while hers breathe fire. She wields a gun too. Ooh…what is actually meant to be their betrothal meeting turns into a bloody battle.

By sheer coincidence, Kali and Meera move to Goa. Now chhota bhai Veer falls for Meera’s younger sister Ishita. For their love to fructify, they must first pacify the DDLJ Lovers.

Where Comedy Nights with Kapil and Comedy Nights Bachao are staples, Rohit Shetty is big boss! So just LOL! Or even better just seek solace in SRK’s outstretched arms.

PREGNANT ANNE HATHAWAY WORKS OUT IN GYM

Actress Anne Hathaway, who is expecting her first child with husband Adam Shulman, was spotted doing a high-energy workout at a gym here.

“She spent over an hour on the cardio equipment looking as beautiful as ever,” a source told the New York Post’s Page Six column, reports femalefirst.co.uk

Once the actress gives birth, she isn’t planning on rushing back to the gym to get her post-baby body back. “Anne wants to be healthy and because she doesn’t want to rush back into a film role, she’s not going to put herself under pressure to slim quickly. She does yoga every day and eats mainly organic food, although she has been tempted by bagels and doughnuts recently to combat morning sickness,” a source had shared earlier.

“The Princess Diaries” actress may have more time for the gym after the birth of her little one as she is also said to be planning to “take a break from Hollywood” following the baby’s arrival.

“Anne can’t wait to be a mum. She’s been wanting it for a long time and waited until the right time to take a break from Hollywood. She feels she’s achieved so much already, it’s time to take a break from acting. She’s told friends she wants to put her career on the back burner for a while and concentrate on being a full-time mum,” the source added.

  • Salma Hayek is Back with ‘Everly’ – MOVIE REVIEW

Salma Hayek is Back with ‘Everly’ – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: The feisty Everly (Hayek) is an escort who works for a gangster named Taiko (Watanabe). Taiko finds out she has betrayed him (by working with the cops to bring him down) and wants revenge. She then finds herself trapped in an apartment where she has to battle wave after wave of Taiko’s goons.

EverlyREVIEW: Salma Hayek in her barest essentials, oozing tough-girl sexuality? Check. Salma Hayek in the skimpiest of clothes and with all guns blazing while mowing down bad guys by the truckload? Yes indeed.

If you’re a diehard Salma Hayek fan and want to see her in a role she’s probably never done before, you’ll get that here too. But while the blood, gore and body count
(not to mention some typical action movie style one-liners) goes through the roof here, the action fest does get a bit repetitive and monotonous after a point. This is also largely due to the fact that most of the fighting takes place in an apartment. Whether intentional or not on the part of the filmmaker, this closed-structure shooting adds to a sense of claustrophobia that is slightly reminiscent of 2002’s Panic Room that also played out mostly indoors.

Apart from trying to break away from her captors, Everly is also worried about her family (mother and daughter). But there’s a stream of creatively-named villains (eg, The Sadist and The Masochist), who are out to get her, courtesy a cruel game being played on her by Taiko.

It’s almost impossible not to see Tarantino and Sam Peckinpah-style influences creeping in here. The action puts the ‘G’ in gratuitous. Also unexplained is how Everly becomes a commando-grade expert in the use of guns and cutting weapons, seemingly all of a sudden. Her transformation from victim to vixen is rocket-fuelled.

On the plus side, the action scenes are slick and stylish. But as mentioned earlier, too much of it does weigh a bit heavily on you. But all said and done, this is Salma Hayek channeling her inner GI Jane. It could have been way more ambitions though.

SUNNY LEONE IS ‘MOST GOOGLED INDIAN IN 2015’

She’s bold, she’s beautiful and she’s always surrounded with some or the other controversy. To put it mildly, Sunny Leone has had an eventful 2015.

If she’s not battling an obscenity case filed by a vile housewife, she’s dealing with ridiculous claims linking her condom ad or with reports of her being thrown out of her apartment.

The actress even took everyone by surprise when her brilliant act in Ek Paheli Leela became the talking point and not her super hot bod she so generously flaunted. With so much going, why wouldn’t she be one of the most searched Indian on the internet?

The actress, for the second time in a row, has made it to the top spot in the ‘Most Googled Indian of 2015’ list, leaving Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and other A-listers behind.

SONAKSHI SINHA: I WANTED TO BE AN ASTRONAUT

Actress Sonakshi Sinha, who started her career as a costume designer, says she wanted to be an astronaut and that it was fate which crafted her switch from fashion to cinema. The daughter of Bollywood actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha forayed into the Hindi film industry with Salman Khan-starrer Dabangg in 2010.

SONAKSHI SINHABollywood’s “Shotgun Junior” shared her sentiments in an interview on Colors Infinity’s show “Born Stylish” with host and designer Pria Kataaria Puri. She said: “To be honest, I wanted to be an astronaut, my math was so bad though that no institute would have given me admission. I love sports, I like to swim and play tennis so I also thought of becoming a swimmer once. “Being in fashion designing, I used to sketch well, I thought of becoming an artist also but eventually, I landed up being an actress. There were a lot of people from different walks of life who inspired me while making a career choice. I was always a courageous girl!”A simple dialogue like Thappad se darr nahi lagta saab ji. pyar se lagta hai from ‘Dabangg’ is still a rage among cinema buffs.

The actress, who is busy shooting for her upcoming films ‘Akira’ and ‘Force 2’, says she “never thought a heroine can get famous for her dialogue”. She said: “For me, the switch from fashion to cinema was all destiny. Arbaaz (Khan) spotted me at one of the fashion shows and approached me for the movie ‘Dabangg’, though I never wanted to be there, it was an offer I could not say no to. I had never thought a heroine can get famous for her dialogue; my father’s expertise has clearly rubbed-off on me”.

    Sorry Daddy – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Inspector Ravi Sharma’s daughter Aneeshka seeks his help in finding her friend Aditya, who goes missing. As Ravi begins his search, he excavates the details of a syndicate that is forcing young children into beggary.

CAST: Shamim Khan, Tinu Verma, Mukesh Tiwari, Raghubir Yadav, Razzak Khan, Gayetri Singh
DIRECTION: Shakur Sir, Vijay Pal | GENRE: Action | DURATION: 2 hours

MOVIE REVIEW Sorry DaddyREVIEW: This film will surely be the latest entrant on your list of the so-bad-it’s-good variety of films. It is a must watch, just for the sake of guilty pleasure. This garish offering takes tackiness to an altogether new high. At a time when Indian cinema is upping its game, such run-in-the-mill formulaic films are so unabashedly and confidently giving the term ‘eye-sore’ a new meaning.

Sorry Daddy is a full-blown ham fest with unintentionally funny dialogues. The film’s story revolves around the cop and how he busts a major nexus that thrives on the business of beggary. This is an outdated idea and the makers make no attempt show any flair in reinventing the concept. Using the stocks props of the genre, the film shifts between its heroes, villains and their altercations over gimmicky punchlines.

The film puts on a 70s’ cloak but doesn’t have the benefit of a solid story. A series of scenes sewed together in a loose narrative fails to make an impact.

The acting department puts together ludicrous histrionics in dialogues that will put Kanti Shah’s Gunda to shame. Aapke wajood ka ansh mere wajood se judd gaya hai is how a woman announces her pregnancy. If you are looking for two hours of laugh-out-loud moments, resort to this unapologetic film. You wish the makers were half as sorry as their title claims.

  • X-Men Apocalypse trailer – Villain compared with Lord Krishna

X-Men Apocalypse trailer – Villain compared with Lord Krishna

Hindus are upset over comparison of blue-colored villain “Apocalypse” with their deity Lord Krishna in the recently released official trailer of “X-Men: Apocalypse” action-adventure Hollywood mutant movie releasing in May 2016.

Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that such trivialization of Lord Krishna, who was highly revered in Hinduism, was quite inappropriate and disturbing to the devotees.

Lord Krishna was meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not for pushing movies for mercantile greed of filmmakers, Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out.

This trailer shows the villain Apocalypse as saying: “I have been called many things over many lifetimes—Ra, Krishna, Yahweh”.

Zed urged director Bryan Singer to delete all the references to Lord Krishna from the trailer and the final movie, unless those were true to the scriptures. Inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts for commercial or other agenda was not okay, it hurts the devotees and confuses non-Hindus about Hinduism.

Hinduism is one of the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken frivolously. Symbols of any faith, larger or smaller, should not be mishandled, Zed noted.

Lord Krishna, usually depicted as blue-skinned, is the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu and subject of major Hindu scriptures such as the Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord) and Bhagavad-Purana. There are about three million Hindus in USA and moksh (liberation) is the ultimate goal of Hinduism.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” of 20th Century Fox stars Golden Globes nominated James McAvoy, Oscar nominated Michael Fassbender and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. Its official website talks about Apocalypse as: Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god.

  • Dev Patel of ‘Slumdog’ to play math genius Ramanujan

Dev Patel of ‘Slumdog’ to play math genius Ramanujan

Since his movie debut in 2008 in “Slumdog Millionaire” the 25-year-old Dev Patel has been picked to play the role of the math genius Ramanujam in a new film on the life of the Indian legendary.

math genius RamanujamPatel’s latest film “The Man Who Knew Infinity“, based on the life of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, was screened at the International Film Festival of India in Goa last month.

In a phone interview with Reuters, Patel spoke about his role in the film, how “Slumdog Millionaire” changed his life and why he wishes people were color blind. He said, “It’s interesting because there is no real footage or sound clippings of him. So, the element of mimicry is not there. In a way, that’s quite freeing for a performer. We did do research though, and I read the book that the film is based on. I worked on my accent a lot and the main thing was to get the restraint and resilience that he had about him. He probably experienced a great deal of prejudice, especially in Cambridge. I wanted to capture that.”

As per Patel, the director had the script with him for nine years. I worked on it as well with him. We worked on trying to flesh out the two characters. The masses wouldn’t really connect with the complex mathematics of it all, so the idea was to bring the humans behind the maths forward. And two very different human beings: man from middle-class India – a poor clerk, and one of the greatest mathematicians in Britain who was an emotionally stunted human being and had to care for this young man. It was two worlds colliding together. Jeremy (Irons) attached himself to the film after I did, and the rest of the cast just fell in place.

The Young Patel, who had shot to fame, with his role in Slum Dog Millionaire, says, “It did make my career, there’s no two ways about it. It put me on the map and opened the doors to India for the West. Now there is a renewed interest in India and storytelling from here in the West. I am one of the actors who have been able to enjoy the benefits of that.”

The 25 year-old says, “I have come to embrace my heritage and I feel lucky that it has given me such a uniqueness in the industry. I feel lucky that I can bring stories from culture to the world. On the other hand, sometimes you wish people could be colour blind and you could be play an average Joe, no matter what his name is. That is changing though, slowly.

“Hollywood is becoming very diverse. At the end of the day, most of the time, the best actor will get the job. My focus is on not forcing people to cast me because I am brown… but because I am talented.” According to Dev, “There are already so many amazing actors in Bollywood, and I don’t think they are starving for talent there. I don’t know if I quite pass the muster there or not.”

  • In The Heart Of The Sea | MOVIE REVIEW

In The Heart Of The Sea | MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Set in 1820, this is the story of a whaling ship that meets with disaster in the then-uncharted Open Ocean. Eager to fill the Essex’s hold with whale oil after an initially disappointing catch, Captain George Pollard, Jr. (Walker) and first officer Owen Chase (Hemsworth) are driven by greed to venture out into treacherous waters. It is poetic justice then, that one of the very creatures they are hunting wrecks their ship as well as the crew.

REVIEW: This film is set in a time when things like ethical concerns regarding the brutality of whaling, were non-existent. Back then concepts like species being endangered probably didn’t exist. In today’s world, whaling is banned almost globally. But back then, as depicted in the film, whaling by itself was probably more dangerous for the crews than the whales. A large sperm whale could reduce the wooden ships then in use, to matchwood. And that’s exactly what happens here, when Pollard, Chase and their fellow sailors are dumb enough to try and bite off way more blubber than they can chew. When they set out from Nantucket and head on down the Americas to a spot of ocean 200 miles off their planned course, they find themselves in a veritable whalers’ paradise. But an alpha-male bull sperm whale proceeds to teach the sailors the lesson of a lifetime.

The story does play out a little in flashback, as one of the survivors of the ordeal, Thomas (Gleeson) recounts their reckless tale. The period detailing (even things like the era’s spoken word accents) is superb and the performances pass muster, but are nothing special. The 3D certainly helps a lot, especially in the whale-hunting as well as the underwater sequences. But ironically enough, you might end up rooting for the whales instead of the humans! After all, the crew only got what they deserved. And when the sailors are left for the dead, driven almost insane and at nature’s mercy, you don’t feel any empathy for them. That said though, this is definitely a gripping tale that’s worth watching.

TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON ACTRESSES TO LOOK A CERTAIN WAY: KAJOL

Bollywood diva Kajol, returning to the big screen after a gap of five years with Dilwale, believes there is too much pressure on actresses to look good which often takes the attention away from their work.

“There is too much pressure to look a certain way and it is wrong. Somewhere down the line you don’t have a life beyond that. Every morning you are getting up and getting dressed. It takes the attention away from your work,” Kajol said in an interview to a news agency.

The actress, 41, faced criticism for her public appearances in the beginning of her career and though her style sense has evolved over the years, Kajol is still not bothered by what people think about her looks.

“There is too much importance attached to it but at the same time it is there. You can’t get away from it. You can adapt to it or not. You have to take a stand… I have figured a way around it so I am comfortable with it myself. I don’t exactly make a fool of me in public anymore.

“But after a point you will see me in my pajamas. It is something innate in me. I can’t be bothered about everybody’s opinion.”

Kajol’s look in her upcoming film Dilwale is getting her a lot of appreciation from fans and the actress is happy that things have worked out well.

“I know for a fact that I am looking good in the film. The reaction has been overwhelming… Everything has turned out well and it has been great. The reaction has been fantastic. Manish (Malhotra) has done the clothes in the movie,” she says.

There were reports that she had a fall out with the designer but Kajol dismisses it with a hearty laugh. “We are too good friends to have differences.”

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol make one of the most successful on-screen pairings in Bollywood. Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale, slated to release on December 18, will reunite them for the seventh time and the actress says it was one of the reasons for her to do the movie.

“I liked my character in the movie and thought I could do something with it and Rohit was directing the film. I have known Rohit for years and the fact that SRK was producing and starring in it. It has to be a combination of everything to say yes. Also, her daughter Nysa had a big role in her decision to star in Shetty’s action-comedy.

The director has worked with husband Ajay Devgn on Golmaal, All The Best and Singham.

“My daughter wanted me to do this film. She does not like to see me cry on screen, she is very clear about it. She keeps telling me ‘Why can’t you do films like papa does.’ And the next thing is Rohit offering me this script. I thought God is giving me a sign,” she says.

Kajol, however, says the film, despite being a typical Rohit Shetty entertainer, has something more to offer with its two love stories.

“It is definitely in the action comedy zone. It is a typical Rohit Shetty film but he has concentrated a lot more on relationships and love aspect with SRK and me and Varun Dhawan-Kriti Sanon’s tracks. It is a nice mix of everything despite the many cars that he has destroyed in the film.

Hate Story 3 | MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Siya (Zareen) appears to be the bone of contention between warring businessmen Aditya (Sharman) and Saurav (Karan). But this one runs deeper than your average love triangle.

Hate Story 3REVIEW: Aditya and Siya are a happy couple. They are shown making passionate love in repetitive montages, kissing, feeling, titillating; while a reprised version of the ’90s track Tumhe Apna Banane Ki Kasam plays soulfully. This compatible couple readily agrees on everything in the bedroom or the boardroom. But their bliss is interrupted when a gift-wrapped orange Audi arrives in their lives. Instead of zooming into the sunset, they go seeking the mystery man (Saurav) who gifted it to them.

Without as much blinking or arching his bleached, tweezed eyebrows, Saurav propositions Aditya. He says he can bankroll him, provided he allows him to sleep with his wife for one night. This bit is tacky because Saurav is neither as suave as Robert Redford from The Indecent Proposal nor is Siya as irresistible as Demi Moore. The similarity to the Hollywood film ends with Aditya reacting as violently as Woody Harrelson.

While the inevitable must happen, Siya plays coy; Aditya plays spoilsport and Saurav has to stay content with having sex with Aditya’s disgruntled secretary, Kaya (Daisy Shah) who gives him a skin show, writhes like a pole dancer and kisses willingly. The plot remains unhurried as another round of those erotic montages shot against chart-busting tracks try to keep the audience hooked.

In an attempt not to make these films seem like pure steam fests, the makers usually thrown in a revenge drama angle. So true to the fabric of this franchise, here too there’s a suspense drama around some ugly sibling rivalry woven in. However, while the film is good-looking, the plot is convoluted. There’s bizarre justification for the poison-ivy women and avaricious despots. But then again, these sequels are about erotica being served piping hot Bollywood style.

So indulge in some guilt-free ‘entertainment’ and don’t go looking for soul. In the performance section, Sharman seems odd when he is shirtless but sincere when he’s buttoned-up. Karan caresses Zareen, his object of desire with his eyes even better than he does with his hands.

Church of England’s condemnation of cinemas showing Hindu film ‘out-of-line’

LAS VEGAS (TIP): Hindus term The Church of England’s condemning United Kingdom (UK) cinemas for showing a Hindu-themed short animation film as “out-of-line”. The Animated Superhero Movie is on Hindu Deities undirected by Indian American Director Sanjay Patel.

Rajan Zed, in a statement from Nevada said that accusing UK cinemas of “hypocrisy” and “on-the-hoof policy making” for exhibiting a Hindu-themed animation film was simply out-of-line for The Church of England which talks of “strengthening community life” and which “seeks to build up good relations with people of other faith traditions”.

Religious organizations should not be in the business of condemning businesses for what they decide to do with the products highlighting “other” religions, Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, added.

Zed noted that despite our seriously different traditions, we as religions; should promote love, harmonious living, mutual loyalty; as we are headed in the same direction. And we should at least cooperate in common causes such as social development, peace, ecological responsibility, etc.
