Salman Khan acquitted in 13 year old hit-and-run case

MUMBAI (TIP): Salman Khan-the popular Bollywood actor has been acquitted of all charges against him in the 13-year-old hit-and-run case, Bombay High Court ruled on Thursday, December 10. The actor was accused of drunk driving and losing control of his SUV, that left one person dead and four others injured, after a night of drinking at an upscale bar in Mumbai in 2002 and fleeing the scene.

“The appeal filed by Salman Salim Khan is allowed. He is acquitted of all charges against him. His conviction and sentence stand quashed,” said Justice A R Joshi. Khan was reportedly moved to tears in the packed courtroom.

The court said the actor cannot be convicted on the basis of evidence submitted by the prosecution.

Justice AR Joshi citied many reasons in the shoddy investigation and prosecution that went in favor of Salman Khan. The judge noted that the prosecution had failed to prove that the incident didn’t happen due to the bursting of tire. The testimony of late police constable Ravindra Patil, who was assigned to guard Salman Khan on the night of the fateful accident, was also termed unreliable by the Judge.

Earlier in May, with eight charges against him, including culpable homicide, a non-bailable offence, a Mumbai Sessions Court had found him guilty and had sentenced him to five years in prison. But two days later, the Bombay High Court suspended the actor’s jail sentence. Khan’s lawyers had argued that the lower court had not considered all the evidence at hand during the trial. Khan was then granted bail.

Every year, more than 130,000 people are killed on India’s deadly roads and over 20,000 cases relate to drivers causing accidents under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In India, there has been a mixed reaction to Salman Khan’s acquittal. Majority, however, found fault with the judgment. The  verdict  handed down by Justice A.R. Joshi  is likely to be a subject of serious discussion in the media.

It is too early to know what Indian Americans think of the actor’s acquittal. However, going by the judicial  standards here, many will fault the judgment.

Priyanka Chopra featured as ‘America‘s Most Wanted’

Actress Priyanka Chopra, who has made a splash in the US with her successful debut on television as Alex Parrish in ABC‘s FBI drama ‘Quantico’ this season, finds herself on the cover of India‘s coveted India Today magazine.

    Priyanka-Chopra-featured

Priyanka, who has appeared on almost every Indian magazine cover by now, is thrilled about her first India Today outing. „This was one cover I always wanted t be on! Thank you @IndiaToday,“ wrote Priyanka on Twitter. The actress, photographed on the sets of ‘Quantico’, is seen in an orange prisoner outfit with handcuffs. And even in this avatar, she looks extremely desirable as always.

After receiving great reviews for her performance on the show that boasts of some of the best ratings for a new network show this season, Priyanka is becoming a household name here. Priyanka‘s acceptance (as the first Indian to play the lead on an American drama) in the mainstream is surely a milestone for Indians in American pop culture. So it is great to see her accomplishments being appreciated back home in India.

„Americans have long considered Indians efficient, practical, loyal, wise, good at following through and even better at making money. But they never associated themselves with machismo, heroism or chutzpah. Priyanka‘s character is an American citizen with an Indian back story. She is a desi, but she is Alex Parrish, not Anjali Parashar.

She is in the FBI, where she‘s a field agent, not an analyst. Alex is sensual, promiscuous, street smart, and she can kick ass. Each one of those traits is new for an Indian in mainstream American pop culture,“ writes India Today. The article offers an insight into Priyanka‘s journey to becoming a network star with ‘Quantico’ and why it is significant.

It was my choice to do things that I am doing and be responsible towards it,” Priyanka said.

“It is a biggest show in the US. I am an Indian star first then an international personality,” she said.

Managing both huge projects – “Quantico” and Bajirao Mastani simultaneously – does take a toll on Priyanka’s health but she is more happy that she is doing variety of work. “I am proud of all the work I am doing. It is exciting work that is coming out. I am physically tired. My mother says when you are young you should work very hard,” she added.

The Fashion actress is looking forward to the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. Priyanka said she was the first one to be cast in Bhansali’s magnum opus.

“I did the film for Sanjay sir and I have just followed him. I was the first person to be cast in this film. I was shooting for Mary Kom and Sanjay sir told me about ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and he was clear he wanted me in it,” she said.

  • TAMASHA – MOVIE REVIEW

    TAMASHA – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Ved (Ranbir) and Tara (Deepika) meet each other with fake identities and take a week-long vacation in Corsica. Back in India though, it’s a different story.

REVIEW: If you watch Imtiaz Ali’s new film assuming that Deepika-Ranbir have unfinished business, you will forgive Tamasha its indulgence. The writer-director obviously knew he was dangling a carrot in front of these two Bollywood exes whose unrequited love has been gossip-column fodder for years now. And, they probably decided (this is an assumption) that if they hook up on screen once again, perhaps they could reach a closure.

The philosophy of the film is simple. If you conform in life, you will exist. However, if you indulge, even from time to time, you can actually live.

Armed with this life lesson, cute kid Ved from Shimla, who hates math and loves spinning yarns, keeps taking off on flights of fantasy. His first grown up adventure is an incognito trip to Corsica. He bumps into Tara, a beautiful Indian girl, on that breathtaking island and both of them promise they will not ask each other any questions, will not have sex and will go their separate ways, once this vacation ends. But of course, Cupid has other plans.

Back in India, Tara pines for Ved. Four years after that chance meeting, she is still drawn to that enigmatic ‘free bird’ who she met on an island.

He, on the other hand, hasn’t even had time to let his real feelings surface. His humdrum existence, as a project manager in a high-tech Delhi firm, has him feeling stifled in a tie and pitching bids he doesn’t believe in.

The clandestine lovers from France rekindle their affair in India. But when Ved proposes, Tara retorts that she loved the free-spirited man she met on vacation, not this mechanised robot. From there on the film meanders.

TAMASHALike the protagonists, all of us know what it is to be tied down and not do what our hearts long. But the route Tamasha takes is long-winded and plain boring at times.

Deepika and Ranbir convey their angst and passion so convincingly that you’re hooked. Except for the curiosity about them, the rest of the drama is `oh,never-mind’.

Matargashti and Heer toh badi sad hai, two of Rahman’s songs, are magical even as standalone numbers.

  • CREED – MOVIE REVIEW

    CREED – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Adonis Creed (Jordan) is a strong-minded young man who, after getting a chance at changing his life for the better, seeks to hone his skills and channel his energy into boxing – something he believes he was born to do. When his efforts to find the best trainer fail, he seeks out his dead father’s old counterpart, Rocky Balboa (Stallone). Will Balboa take Creed Jr under his wing and train him for greatness?

REVIEW: Every once in a while, there comes along a sports drama film that challenges odds and defies expectations – much like the hero of this film, Apollo Creed’s son. While Stallone has not written this film (as he did with the others in the Rocky series), Ryan Coogler makes deft work with this subtle, moving and nuanced tale of interpersonal relationships. The boxing scenes, therefore, only add to the emotional impact of the film. Confrontations in the ring serve as key points, but it is the parts in between that form the flesh and blood of this story. That said though, you will be hard-pressed to find a film that has better brutal pugilistic rounds than this.

So, Creed is the archetypal angry kid from a broken home (think real life Mike Tyson, because the parallels of aggression are all too familiar). He is impulsive and violent but driven by a greater destiny. Nonetheless, it is Stallone who takes the cake as well as the bakery here. He steals the show with his masterful performance, thanks to Coogler giving Stallone the leeway to actually emote and allow shades of grey into his character. That aside, Stallone’s role seems to be tailor made. Too old for actually getting into a fight, he now slips into the mentor league. Fans of the original Rocky films will find this film as comfortable to slip into as an old shoe, with several points of familiarity, much to their delight. Both Stallone and Jordan are terrific.

Simply put, if you like films about boxing, with the emotional quotient thrown in, you will enjoy this one. It’s Stallone, after all.

EMMA WATSON WANTS TO BE HERSELF

Actress Emma Watson says she doesn’t want to draw a line between her public and her private life. Her idea is to just be herself.

“(I am) my most authentic self. I don’t want there to be a big separation between the public and the private person. It’s definitely the harder road to tread but without a doubt, ultimately the most rewarding,” said the Noah actress, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“It sounds like a ridiculous thing to say, but I’m very interested in truth, in finding ways to be messy and unsure and flawed and incredible and great and my fullest self, all wrapped into one. When you watch the work of someone like actress Emma Thompson, you feel like you’re seeing something true, and I aspire to that,” she added.

She said she spent so long working on her Harry Potter character Hermione Granger that she didn’t get to figure out who she really was until now. “(I’ve) spent more than half of my life pretending to be someone else. While my contemporaries were dyeing their hair and figuring out who they were, I was figuring out who Hermione was and how best to portray her,” Watson told Porter Magazine, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

  • Spectre – MOVIE REVIEW

    Spectre – MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: James Bond is hunting the terrifying ‘Pale King’ – but what happens when Bond discovers the villain is a shadowy spectre from his own past?

REVIEW: So, Spectre is one of Bond’s most thrilling action movies – but also one of his most ghostly, reaching into an eerie past. James Bond (Craig) is chasing ‘The Pale King’ (Waltz), head of criminal group Spectre, perpetrating terror on nations, forcing them to buy Spectre’s massive surveillance network. Tracking the villain who killed his first love and first boss, Bond reduces parts of Mexico and London to rubble, smashes cars, helicopters and a plane, battles hideous heavy Hinx (Bautista), beds sultry Mrs. Sciarra (Belucci), nearly drinks vegetable juice and meets Madeleine Swann (Seydoux) – who downs dirty Martinis and shoots deadly hard.

But what happens when Bond finds The Pale King is Blofield – a shadow from his own past? And when the new ‘M’ (Fiennes) faces top bureaucrat Max Denbigh (Scott), who believes the ’00’ department – and democracy – must bow before drones.

Can Bond save the world? And the ’00’ program too?

Spectre features haunting cinematography, pale, misty lakes, snow-clad hills, helicopters gleaming like malevolent wasps, wicked shadows on glass walls. Traditional Bond imagery – golden roulette wheels, blush-red casino carpets, silky gowns falling upon ivory floors -are replaced with starker, darker shots.

The action leaves you breathless as choppers burst, cars drown, a plane explodes on a Christmas cake landscape and Hinx breaks necks – but while Spectre’s hand-to-hand is thrilling, its tepid mouth-to-mouth, Bond’s kisses censoriously chopped, leaves you feeling the world is certainly not enough.

Happily, Craig pleases, part-swagger, part-shudder, drawling one-liners – “I think we’re supposed to be impressed…” – with wry aplomb. Ben Whishaw presents the cutest ‘Q’, Naomie Harris imbues Moneypenny with bouncy life while Fiennes pulls off an ageing agent, each character carrying smartly-tailored dialogues.

But the story has long, loose threads, including Blofield linked to Bond’s babyhood, plus references to murdered dads and lost loves. Literary allusions couldn’t be heavier, ‘Madeleine Swann’ straight out of Proust, emphasising remembrance while debating detectives versus drones. Looking back too often loosens the ground under Bond’s feet now – this could’ve been much tighter, as could be Waltz’s mildly mincing Blofield.

However, a few moans aside, Spectre’s action still shakes and stirs, leaving you loving its oak and leather, champagne – and dynamite.

  • X: Past Is Present | MOVIE REVIEW

X: Past Is Present | MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: This ambitious venture has 11 intertwined stories running in the same narrative about a filmmaker K and his many muses.

Past Is PresentMOVIE REVIEW: This film can be best described as a bizarre, underwhelming hotch-potch. Though some of these 11 sub-stories do show that rare streak of brilliance, most of them are sheer duds. The common thing binding them all is that they are unmistakably pretentious.

Of the many, it is Pratim D Gupta’s story about a man and a woman living under the same roof at different times and falling in love in a quaint way, which is striking. The old-world charm lies in its wooden almairah, the acoustic guitar and its poetry. None of the other plots quite condense the idea of love so deeply. Though all stories are about unrequited love, this one feels the most complete one of the lot.

The most disappointing one came from Q,who tries his hand at an abstract idea, but his attempt doesn’t translate to good. His plot is sinister, paints a macabre milieu, has his risque quality and yet, the story doesn’t come together.

A film is an amorphous mass and on that count this one doesn’t deliver. Its scattered screenplay makes the subplots feel disjointed. The protagonist K is caricaturish – a restless artist stuck in a creative limbo, narrating his escapades (romantic liaisons and sexcapades).

Since a lot of the film plays out in flashback, the stories often jarringly? overlap. Sometime in middle of all the absurdity playing on screen, the film tells you that every filmmaker has one story that he retells differently each time, which justifies the repetitiveness of the plots.

It is tolerable in parts, sometimes inventive, often mediocre but never half-as-good as it claims to be. As the protagonist shifts between startling you and disgusting you, the leading ladies take the cake. Radhika Apte, Swara Bhaskar and Huma Qureshi are unforgettable.

Avoid, X : Past is Present. It will fail to suit your filmi palettes and make you stay away from biryani for life with a very grotesque reference. You can do without such negativity.

The film is directed by a team of eleven filmmakers including Abhinav Shiv Tiwari, Anu Menon, Nalan Kumarasamy, Hemant Gaba, Pratim D. Gupta, Q, Raja Sen, Rajshree Ojha, Sandeep Mohan, Sudhish Kamath and Suparn Verma.

BEING FIT A HEALTHY CHANGE IN BOLLYWOOD: SOHA ALI KHAN

Actress Soha Ali Khan, whose mother and yesteryear screen icon Sharmila Tagore donned a bikini on-screen in the 1960s, says hitting the gym may not have been a trend back then, but a fit frame has now become essential in the movie industry.

SOHA ALI KHANThe 37-year-old, who is blessed with a small frame, believes a lot has changed over the decades.

“My mom wore a bikini, but back then nobody went to a gym. It’s good to be fit. You should try to be healthy. If that means to go to the gym, that’s a good thing. You can see in the industry… people are fitter,” Soha, who was in the capital for The Beauty Debate powered by Dove on ‘Evolving ideals of beauty in India’ at a summit, said.

But she isn’t in favour of abruptly losing weight by relying on supplements just for a song or a scene.

“It should be more about a lifestyle change and not done suddenly,” said the “Mr Joe B. Carvalho” actress, who added that even make-up has evolved in Bollywood.

“Now, we have gone into HD definition. It’s all about looking natural where you can even see skin pores. Now, when you wake up in the morning, it looks like you have just woken up.

“So, people need to understand that in a photo shoot there is a lot of airbrushing… So what is on-screen is not real. What you see on the magazine is not 100 percent real. Everything has been touched up a bit,” she said.Soha also admits that getting ready has now become more
    “complicated”.

  • Intolerance is on the rise: Aamir Khan

Intolerance is on the rise: Aamir Khan

NEW DELHI (TIP): Bollywood actor Aamir Khan spoke out earlier this week, at the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards in New Delhi, against what he described as a rising tide of religious intolerance in India.

Khan said in the event, “(Wife) Kiran and I have lived all our lives in India. For the first time, she said, should we move out of India? That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make to me.”

“She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers everyday. That does indicate that there is a sense of growing disquiet.”

“You feel why this is happening, you feel low. That sense does exist in me.”

Khan meanwhile applauded the number of Indian writers, scientists and filmmakers who have since returned awards bestowed upon them by the country — an act of protest against, as biologist P.M. Bhargava phrased it, “the government’s attack on rationalism.”

“For creative people, to voice what they feel is important. A number of creative people – historians and scientists – have increasingly had a certain feeling that they feel they need to express. One of the ways of expressing their dissatisfaction or disappointment is to return awards.”

He said: “As long as you don’t resort to violence, all individuals have a right to protest and they can protest in any manner they feel is right”.

“This is certainly a way to protest for creative people.”

Earlier this month fellow superstar Shah Rukh Khan also spoke out against what he called “extreme intolerance” in India.

A movement that began with writers returning state awards has spread to scientists, historians and filmmakers. They have cited the killing of rationalists M M Kalburgi and Govind Pansare, as well as the lynching of a man over suspicions he consumed beef, as examples of rising intolerance in the country.

    Some excerpts from the interview.
Anant Goenka : Aamir, are you agreeing with the protest or do you think it’s called for… do you think it is premature?
Aamir: Well, I think, if I am not mistaken there are so many people in this room who are much more knowledgeable than me so I am feeling intimidated to speak in front of all of you. But my understanding is that a lot of people from the creative fraternity are protesting because of the growing discomfort they felt or the growing atmosphere of intolerance that they felt around them… growing sense of insecurity and disappointment with that, and as a result that was their way of showing that they are not happy with the situation.
As an individual myself, as a part of the country, as a citizen, we read in newspapers what’s happening and certainly I have also been alarmed. I can’t deny that I am alarmed.. by a number of incidences. For any society it is very important to have a sense of security. I mean there will be acts of violence in world for different reasons. But for us as Indians, as a part of society to have a sense of security… two-three things are very important, I feel. One is sense of justice. If there is a wrong step that anyone takes, then a correct justice is what is required. Common man should feel that justice will be done. That’s what gives a sense of security. The second and very important sense of security is the people who are our elected representatives – people who we select to look after us for five years if at state level or Centre. When people take law in to their hands and when there is a sense of insecurity, we look upon these people to take a strong stance, make strong statements and speed up the legal process to prosecute cases. When we see it happening there is a sense of security but when we don’t see that happening there is a sense of insecurity. So it does not matter who the ruling party is. It’s happened across ages. On television debates, we see where one political party, in this case, the BJP which is ruling right now, is accused of various things. They said, ‘But what happened in 1984?’. But that doesn’t make right what’s happening now. What happened in ‘84 was disastrous and horrendous. At other times also, through ages, whenever there is a violent act, when an innocent person is killed, be it one or a large number, that’s very unfortunate. And these unfortunate moments are the ones when we look towards our leaders to take a strong step. Make statements that are reassuring to the citizens.

The Indian Panorama analyst shares a similar opinion and maintains that the storm over actor Aamir Khan’s statement on ‘rising intolerance’ needs to be understood against the backdrop of the recent political temperature.

There is nothing wrong with what Aamir said, or what his wife asked him, given the nature of divisive politics being played in India, where such issues are drummed up by opposition parties and played down by Government.

The common sentiment within the dissent is a belief that the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who leads the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has fostered a climate of discrimination against India’s religious minorities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known for his “Hindutuva” ideology and has maintained a studied silence on growing intolerance. His party members have taken his continued silence on the issue as his approval and continue to fuel anti-minority sentiments.

It is a dangerous trend, one which may create an atmosphere of violence which ultimately could destabilize the nation. For a country of 1.25 billion people and their multiple diversities, insecurities and concerns involving caste, religion, and ethnicity, being secular & tolerant needs to be a way of life.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan confirms his affliction with Hepatitis B Virus

MUMBAI (TIP): Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan revealed that he has been battling with Hepatitis B, a disease that affects the liver, for the last 20 years. The actor said he is surviving only on 25 per cent of his liver today, having lost the rest 75 percent to the deadly virus.

The actor was at the Hepatitis B Awareness Drive launched by Health and Family Welfare Ministry in association with UNICEF.

The UNICEF Celebrity Ambassador said, “Hepatitis B came to me accidentally. After my accident on the sets of Coolie, I was infused with blood of about 200 donors and 60 bottles of blood were injected into my system. The Australian antigen Hepatitis B had only been detected three months ago and it was very new for being detected also among various tests needed to be carried out before giving blood to another patient. One of my blood donors was carrying Hepatitis B virus which went into my system. I continued to function normally till the year 2000 and almost 18 years after the accident, during a very normal medical checkup, I was told that my liver was infected and I had lost 75 per cent of my liver. So, if I am standing here today, you are looking at a person who is surviving with 25 per cent of liver. That is the bad part. The good part is you can survive even with 12%. But no one wants to get to that stage,” said Amitabh Bachchan.

“It has highlighted to me how a small oversight during growing up years can prove to be detrimental to not only one’s own life but also others”, he said.

The actor further added, “Immunization against Hepatitis B is a very personal issue for me, and I am very happy to associate with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and UNICEF India. I narrate my story to the Indian population to create awareness about this cause.”

While taking about the healthcare services and the level of Doctors in India, Bachchan said “I went through a medical course and during all my ailments, I relied on medical experts and doctors in my country despite having the means to do go abroad but I had faith in the medical professionals and doctors of India. When we took a second opinion abroad, I found out that whatever diagnosis was commanded to me by Indian doctors was no different from the foreign ones.”

  • Charlie Sheen opens up about HIV diagnosis

Charlie Sheen opens up about HIV diagnosis

Charlie Sheen CONFIRMS he is HIV positive in an exclusive TODAY interview with Matt Lauer. Sheen revealed that he has been HIV-positive for the past four years. He told Matt Lauer that he had paid millions to sexual partners in order to keep his disease secret, and had been the target of “shakedowns” for more money.

Sheen said that he had unprotected sex with some sexual partners after his diagnosis, but had done so safely to ensure that none would contract HIV. He also told Lauer that he had informed his sexual partners of his diagnosis prior to engaging in sexual relations. That has raised questions among the public, and has been contested by at least one former sexual partner.

Here is an ‘open letter’ from Charlie Sheen on his diagnosis

Roughly four years ago, I suddenly found myself in the throws of a seismic and debilitating three-day cluster-migraine-like headache. I was emergently hospitalized with what I believed to be a brain tumor or perhaps some unknown pathology. I was partially correct. Following a battery of endless tests, that included a hideous spinal tap, it was sadly and shockingly revealed to me that I was, in fact, positive for HIV.

The news was a “mule kick” to my soul. Those impossible words I absorbed and then tried to convince myself, that I was stuck, suspended, or even stranded inside some kind of alternate reality or nightmare, were to the absolute contrary. I was awake. It was true… reality.

Under the brilliant and perfect care of Dr. Robert Huizenga as well as “the” leading infectious disease expert in the known universe, I began a rigorous and intensive treatment program. Not missing a beat, a med dose, or one shred of guidance, quickly my viral loads became undetectable. Like every other challenge in my life, again, I was victorious and kicking this disease’s ass. I wish my story had ended there. Unfortunately, for my family and myself, it had only just begun. (As quoted by today.com)

The personal disbelief, karmic confusion, shame and anger lead to a temporary yet abysmal descent into profound substance abuse and fathomless drinking. It was a suicide run. Problem was, I’d forgotten that I’m too tough for such a cowardly departure. Yet, despite this loathsome and horrific odyssey, I was vigilant with my anti-viral program.

READ: Charlie Sheen says he is HIV positive

My medical team could only shake their heads as each and every blood test returned levels revealing a state of remission. Even though I might have been trying to kill myself, one thing was radically evident; the disease was not.

In and around this perplexing and difficult time, I dazedly chose (or hired) the companionship of unsavory and insipid types. Regardless of their salt-less reputations, I always lead with condoms and honesty when it came to my condition. Sadly, my truth soon became their treason, as a deluge of blackmail and extortion took center stage in this circus of deceit.

To date, I have paid out countless millions to these desperate charlatans.

Locked in a vacuum of fear, I chose to allow their threats and skulduggery to vastly deplete future assets from my children, while my “secret” sat entombed in their hives of folly (or so I thought).

News Flash: This ends today. I’m claiming back my freedom. The scales of justice will swiftly and righteously re-balance themselves.

In conclusion, I accept this condition not as a curse or scourge, but rather as an opportunity and a challenge. An opportunity to help others. A challenge to better myself.

Every day, of every month, of every year, countless individuals go to work, man their stations, fulfill their professional obligations with a host of disabilities. Diseases, imperfections, hurdles, detours. These maladies range from lupus to cancer, from paralysis to blindness, from diabetes to obesity. “Treated,” HIV is no different.

My partying days are behind me. My philanthropic days are ahead of me.

Ernest Hemingway once wrote, “Courage is grace under pressure.”

I’ve served my time under pressure; I now embrace the courage, and the grace.

    Love and peace, Charlie Sheen

  • I DON’T UNDERSTAND NUMBERS: SONAM KAPOOR

I DON’T UNDERSTAND NUMBERS: SONAM KAPOOR

SONAM KAPOORActress Sonam Kapoor says the makers of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo had to explain to her that the film’s collections were good since she is clueless about the mathematics behind box-office numbers.

“I don’t understand numbers. I just don’t get how it works. I used to receive a call from Fox (co-producer) every day about the collections and I would say ‘Is it good or bad?’ and they would say, ‘It’s a very good news’. This film has made those kind of numbers, so obviously many people have watched the film,” Sonam said at a press meet for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, where Salman Khan and director Sooraj Barjatya were also present.

Sonam’s dance in the title track has been extremely popular, with numerous videos by celebrities such as Richa Chaddha, ‘Munni’ Harshaali Malhotra and even the Dilwale team dancing to her steps in them, which acted as a promotional tool for the film.

“Everybody is congratulating me. What I love is that I’m getting calls and messages from people who’ve never messaged or called in my life. And it’s people not from the industry. I’ve been getting a lot of calls from Indians abroad who’re watching the film and missing home so much. For me, that is the best thing, when something affects you emotionally in the best way,” she said.

Sonam recently became a victim of trolls on the social media for her
‘misogynistic’ remark on the meat ban in Mumbai. But there no trolls for her performance in the film.

  • WRECKER | MOVIE REVIEW

    WRECKER | MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: Emily (Hutchinson) and Leslie (Whitburn) are besties who embark on a long road trip in order to join some other friends for a party. As they hurtle along in their red Mustang on a lonely highway in the American Northwest, their journey takes a turn for the worse. They come across and are harassed by the driver of a big-rig tow truck. It soon becomes a matter of life and death for the girls.

MOVIE REVIEW: This film is said to be a take on Steven Spielberg’s 1971 TV movie Duel, but apart from borrowing the premise of road rage taken to the extreme, that’s where similarities end. Duel’s sole male protagonist is now swapped for two party girls, whose road trip is meant to culminate in a weekend of debauchery and fun. Leslie is the wilder one, who swallows ale and inhales weed with rapacious glee, even though designated driver Emily tut-tuts her and urges moderation. But Leslie has no patience – even for a lumbering tow truck that obstructs their speed and path – and bounces around in her seat impatiently like a simian on speed.

Their anger turns into fear when they realize that the rig’s driver is seemingly out to kill them. Why that is so, is never explained but we get a glimpse of his (or her?) diabolical bent thanks to shots of an upside down crucifix and a pentagram. The girls forget about the partying and try to save their lives. The film starts out promisingly but later, becomes a bit tedious, thanks to a somewhat repetitive pattern in the narrative. There’s also a lot less action than what such a film could promise. Sure, the film is low budget and corners are cut, but thankfully, at least the POV shots from the Mustang are passable even though the stunts are nonexistent as is a sense of intensity, buildup and climax.

The film’s only plus points are a few jump scares, slickness and the scenic great outdoors, where it was shot. Apart from that, there’s little else to recommend.
