Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s Batwara 1947 opened to Rs 5.75 crore nett in India on Friday, registering a moderate start at the box office. The Rajkumar Santoshi directorial, which arrived in theatres alongside Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, trailed its box-office rival by a significant margin on Day 1.
According to early estimates by Sacnilk, Batwara 1947 earned Rs 5.75 crore nett in India on its opening day across 8,721 shows. The film’s India gross collection stood at an estimated Rs 6.84 crore.
The film also recorded an estimated Rs 1.50 crore in overseas gross, bringing its opening-day worldwide gross to approximately Rs 8.34 crore. Batwara 1947 recorded an overall occupancy of 15.42 per cent on Day 1, with night shows witnessing the highest turnout.
On the other hand, the Emraan Hashmi-starrer had already established a significant lead through advance bookings before its release and went on to record a much stronger opening.
Awarapan 2 earned an estimated Rs 21 crore nett in India on Day 1, putting it well ahead of Batwara 1947. Interestingly, veteran actor Shabana Azmi features in both films.
With the Independence Day weekend ahead, Batwara 1947 will now look to benefit from the holiday period and positive word of mouth to build momentum over the coming days.
IndiaToday.in’s review of the film reads,` “Adapted from the play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, the writing has ideas, the conversations have weight, and the central metaphor is powerful. But cinema needs emotional texture, lived-in relationships and performances that make you believe in the people on screen. It has all the right things to say but doesn’t know how to, and that makes this potentially moving story feel surprisingly cold.”
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the movie marks the comeback of Preity Zinta, who has been away from films for eight years. Apart from the lead pair, the film also features Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, Kanikka Kapur, and Isha Sandhir.
