    AIA-NY’s 38th Iconic Deepavali Festival Makes History on Long Island

    BABYLON,  NY (TIP) : The Association of Indians in America, New York (AIA-NY) celebrated its 38th iconic Deepavali Festival at Overlook Beach here on October 11, marking a milestone as the first-ever festival of its kind on Long Island.

    An estimated 2,000 people enjoyed cultural performances, spiritual presentations, traditional Indian food, and community celebration throughout the day. A spectacular live fireworks display lit up Long Island’s south shore, creating unforgettable memories.

    Honorees Sunita Sadhnani, Dr Gurmohan Syali, Dr Abhay Malhotra, and Justice Karen Gopee with the AIA team, guests, and dignitaries, including Congressman Suhas Subramanyam.

    Amid fulsome compliments for staging a grand show and maneuvering the annual event’s move from South Street Seaport in Manhattan, AIA-NY President Beena Kothari said, “This event was a dream come true… promoting culture, unity, and community engagement.”

    New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar said generations of school children in New York will know what Diwali is when they get a holiday for the festival.

    Many lawmakers and dignitaries greeted the audience and congratulated AIA-NY and its President, Beena Kothari, for organizing a colorful extravaganza. US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sent a video-recorded message. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer,  impressed by the teeming crowds despite forecasts of bad weather, announced that his Town will also support the Deepavali Festival next year.

    US Congressman Suhas Subramanyam came all the way from Virginia to grace the event. New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar said that the Empire State’s lead in making Diwali a public holiday has been followed by other states, including California and Pennsylvania.

    Consul General of India in New York Amb. Binaya Srikanta Pradhan was represented by Consul, Community Affairs, Shri Tsewang Gyaltson.

    Highlights of the daylong program included Kirtan Concert by Bhakti Marga, founded by Paramahamsa Vishwananda, and Ramayan Live Dance Drama choreographed by the renowned Pt S.N. Charka of East-West School of Dance in Monroe, Upstate New York. A Cultural Fashion Show by celebrity designer Prashant Goyal added a touch of glamor in the evening. Later,  Manpreet Komal and Amit Sharma from Rang de Bollywood in San Francisco had the audience dance to their Garba beats.

    A half-hour devotional Kirtan Concert was presented by Bhakti Marga devotees. Standing behind the performers are Beena Kothari, Neha Lohia, and Dr Tarun Wasil.

    Four people were honored for their achievements and contributions to community and society: Justice Karen Gopee, Dr Gurmohan Syali, Dr Abhay Malhotra, and Sunita Sadhnani. Ruma Devi, visiting from India, and Kamal Sabri were also honored. The community celebration opened with the American and Indian national anthems amid a flag ceremony.

    The carefully curated programming had something for each age group. The first segment saw classical and folk-dance performances on stage by kids, young adults, and adults. Rangoli and art competitions were keenly contested. Health & Wellness Zone had Yoga & Zumba in another enclosure.

    AIA-NY President Beena Kothari thanked celebrity designer Prashant Goyal and his models for the Cultural Fashion Show.

    The event kicked off with an auspicious Ganesh Vandana and concluded with Lakshmi Ji Aarti, symbolizing light, prosperity, and togetherness.

    Sponsors, presenters, and VIP guests were served a sumptuous vegetarian meal before the fireworks show. About 25 stalls and 5 food vendors were seen doing brisk business.

    AIA-NY to hold 38th Deepavali Festival on Long Island

    The iconic Indian community event on Oct 11 near Jones Beach in Babylon will include all the features it is known for: fireworks, cultural performances, Meena Bazar, and ethnic food, promises AIA-NY President Beena Kothari. 

    HICKSVILLE, NY (TIP):  The annual, iconic Deepavali Festival, organized by the Association of Indians in America (AIA), New York chapter, will be held this year at the Overlook Beach near Jones Beach on Long Island’s south shore.

    AIA-NY’s 38th Deepavali Festival in Babylon on October 11 is being held under the leadership of Beena Kothari, who has a record of successfully organizing major community events, including the India Day Parade in Hicksville twice. She has become a proud pioneer now as she guides the move of AIA’s Deepavali Festival from Manhattan to Long Island.

    Inviting everyone to the all-day celebration of India’s most beloved festival, Beena Kothari mentions that they have planned an exciting lineup of programs highlighting our rich culture and heritage to entertain and engage everyone in the family, from kids to seniors. Admission to the public event is free, she confirms. Overlook Beach in Babylon is conveniently located and easily accessible from Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as Queens.

    The fireworks show, the most exciting part of the AIA Deepavali celebration, is scheduled for 7 pm on the shore (instead of on the water, as in previous years at the South Street Seaport) and will last 20-30 minutes.

    The most significant event will be the 30-minute Ramayana Musical Live Dance Drama. A presentation about Ram Setu has also been planned. Jains’ Diwali connection will be celebrated –  on this day Bhagwan Mahavira attained liberation in 527 BCE. Many lawmakers, dignitaries, including the Consul General of India, Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, and celebrities will grace the festivities in big numbers. Entertainment includes Indian classical and folk dances.

    AIA NY Chapter President Beena Kothari and her team are striving for a unique Diwali experience.

    A Special Fashion Show by Prashant Goyal, Celebrity Designer, and a surprise Bollywood star appearance will add glamor to the evening.

    Kids Corner, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, will offer games and fun activities, including henna painting.

    Adults can head out to the Health and Wellness Zone and try out free Yoga and Zumba sessions.

    Retail and corporate booths will be set up in a tented area. Women will be seen thronging Meena Bazar. Food stalls will serve Indian cuisine and masala chai.

    Maharaja and Maharani mannequins will beckon visitors to the photo booth. To welcome visitors from different communities, their women will be dressed in colorful saris. Visitors can participate in Rangoli and art competitions.

    People can still purchase tickets to the VIP dinner scheduled for 5:30 pm in an enclosed area. Purchase of raffle tickets may win you exciting grand prizes.

    MINEOLA, NY (TIP): The Association of Indians in America – New York Chapter (AIA-NY), on March 20, held a momentous inauguration swearing-in of Beena Kothari as the new President, along with the Executive Committee.

    The event was attended by over 150 distinguished guests, including elected officials, AIA founding members, Board of Trustees, AIA Past Presidents, community leaders, members, and media partners. A plaque was presented to outgoing President of AIA-NY Dr. Jagdish Gupta for his leadership of AIA-NY .

    Recognizing the AIA Past Presidents

    The inauguration ceremony featured the singing of the American and Indian national anthems by Bina Sabapthy, Jyoti Gupta, and Roopam Maini, as well as a Ganesh Vandana performance by Hamsaasya School of Dance. Harsh Vyas and Jasbir Jay Singh served as emcees.

    Six Outstanding Women Achievers Honored by the Indian American Forum

    GARDEN CITY, NY (TIP): Celebrating the strength, resilience, and remarkable achievements of women, with the aim of Inspiring others to understand and value women’s inclusion to forge a better world, Indian American Forum honored several dignified and accomplished women of substance at their 14th Annual Women’s Achievements Awards Gala this past weekend at the Akbar Banquet in Long Island.

    Under the leadership of Chairperson Indu Jaiswal and Gala Chair Shammi Singh, known for their strong commitment and dedication to the community cause, along with the entire team of IAF, were the organizing force behind the GALA, celebrating the success of the outstanding achievements by these distinguished personalities in the presence of many accomplished guests and community leaders.

    Several distinguished women, representing various sectors were recognized and honored. The honorees were presented with special citations from Nassau County Executive, Town of Oyster Bay, Town of Hempstead, Town of North Hempstead and Nassau County Legislature.

    Our distinguished awardees and honorees included:

    • Dr. Jagmohan Kalra, MD -> Board certified Hematologist-oncologist, a renowned community leader and Karaoke group owner and singer.

    • Dr. Leena Doshi – Founder of Doshi Diagnostics and non-profit Doshi Smiles, an athlete, philanthropist and painter.

    • Dr. Nita Mehta – Specialization in Ophthalmology and glaucoma. Board member of Indian Cultural Unit at Parker Jewish Institute and on the board/committee of several organizations like Rotary, Indo-American Senior citizen center of NY, India Home and GGKLI.

    • Sarina Jain – Founder of Masala Bhangra – A trailblazer in fitness and a dynamic cultural ambassador revolutionizing fitness through culture and movement celebrating over 30 years in the fitness industry.

    • Falu (Falguni Shah) – Grammy Award winning multi-lingual singer/song-writer, recognized by Economic Times as one of the 20 most influential Indian women and named as one of the Top 50 Global leaders from India in Business and Arts.

    • Sanjana Iyer – Youth Empowerment
    Syosset school senior and professional Bharatnatyam dancer and musician, Two times DECA state qualifier, Two-time speech and debate LIFA qualifier using her professional dance experience for Parkinson’s research fund raising.

    Several Officials including Nassau County Comptroller Hon. Elaine Phillips, Town Supervisor Hon. Joseph Saladino, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Hon Rose Walker, Nassau County Legislature and Deputy Supervisor Hon. Dorothy L.     Starting with the beautiful décor and warm welcome with sumptuous appetizers, the evening started with American and Indian National Anthem followed by a rocking welcome by hosts Indu Jaiswal, Roopam Maini and Shammi Singh.


    Traditional Bharatnatyam and Kathak dance performances portrayed true colors of our rich culture. Sarina Jain from Masala Bhangra rolled the feet of audience with her powerful Bhangra dance moves. DJ Parminder rocked the dance floor.

    GLEN COVE, NY (TIP): Celebrating the theme of ‘Inspire Inclusion’, with the aim of Inspiring others to understand and value women’s inclusion to forge a better world, Indian American Forum honored several dignified and accomplished women of substance at their 13th Annual Women’s Achievements Awards Gala this past weekend at the Metropolitan Caterers in Long Island.

    Under the leadership of Chairperson Indu Jaiswal and Gala Chair Shammi Singh, known for their strong commitment and dedication to the community cause, along with the entire team of IAF, were the organizing force behind the GALA, celebrating the success of the outstanding achievements by these distinguished personalities in the presence of many accomplished guests and community leaders. Blakeman’s office, Certificates of Recognition from The Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer S Desena, and Town Clerk Hon. Ragini Srivastava’s office, Town of Hempstead Hon. Donald X. She holds several core community leadership positions not limited to: President Grant Medical College Alumni USA Inc., Regional Director Mid-Atlantic region AAPI, Chair Publications AAPI, Vice Chair Asian American Advisory Committee Nassau County and Advisory committee Hindu Temple Flushing NY.

    • Dr. Mala Sachdeva – Professor of Medicine at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and academic nephrologists, an educator, and part of the full-time faculty at the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension in Great Neck, New York, North well Health System. Currently she has been elected as President Elect in 2024 and then will serve as President (2025-2026) for Women In Nephrology Organization, a national organization advocating and mentoring wo men and men in developing exciting careers in the field of renal disease.

    • Neela Mukherjee Lockel – President and Chief Executive Officer at EAC Network. She has served as the Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross on Long Island since 2016, where she oversaw Red Cross activities across Nassau County and Suffolk Counties, and sat on the Regional Leadership Team of Greater New York. She facilitated the Regional Board Diversity Committee, was a member of the Advanced Public Affairs Training Team and the American Red Cross LEAD, an internal leadership development program. She has deployed to Red Cross disaster responses for Hurricanes Matthew (2016) and Florence (2018) and the California Wildfires (2017), and sat as the Interim Regional CEO for the Maine Region, to lead the team through a merger into the Northern New England Region.

    • Dr. Mamta Shaha – President of North Shore Rotary Club. She is a Board-Certified Pediatrician and an Assistant Professor of pediatrics at New York University. She is also a Board-certified Ophthalmologist from Bombay University. She is actively involved with JAINA (Federation of Jain Association in North America) and has served as JAINA Northeast Vice president for two years and served as a director of the Jain Center of America NY for 4 years. She currently chairs two committees in JAINA: As a Chairperson of the JAINA Media Committee, she produced and directed the weekly Jain TV show “Mangalam” for 10 years.

    Mr. and Mrs. Premi took much pride in their incomparable ability to help the local community. They helped with anyone needing assistance. Mrs. Premi never had an issue with welcoming anyone into her home, and she would single-handedly cook meals for large groups of people at the drop of a hat. Many a times they housed people who had nowhere to go. Mrs. Premi helped new immigrants with Housing, providing shelter and guiding them in his new environment for several years. Their House was known as Mini Punjab.

    HICKSVILLE,  NY (TIP): The 12th IDP USA India Day Parade on August 27,  with a record number of floats and booths, clearly indicated the efforts of the organizers and the participation of the community.

    As before, the Grand Marshals and sponsors extended greetings on the occasion before the parade started. Those who addressed the gathering included Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino, Grand Marshals Naveen Shah, Harry Singh Bolla, Harshad Shiv Bhai Patel, and the celebrity Grand Marshal Mallika Sherawat. The Consulate General of India was represented by Consul Community Affairs Mr. Achanthodiyal Kesavan Vijayakrishnan.

    Co-Presidents Deepak Bansal and Vimal Goyal also spoke on the occasion. IDP Founder Bobby Kalotee welcomed and thanked the dignitaries and celebrities  for their presence. The parade started from Patel Brothers  and ended at LIRR Parking lot on West  John Street in Hicksville where around 35 booths and an  entertainment stage were set up.  Well known singer Khuda Baksh regaled the visitors with his melodious singing.

    MINEOLA, NY (TIP): Eminent physician and community leader Dr Jagdish K. Gupta has been sworn in as President of the Association of Indians in America (AIA – NY chapter) for two years. The Oath of Office was administered by Nassau County legislator Hon. Thomas McKevitt to Dr Gupta and his executive committee at a graceful ceremony on June 2 at the county seat in Mineola, NY.

    In his presidential address, Dr Gupta said that preparations have started in earnest for AIA-NY’s flagship annual program, the iconic Deepavali on South Street Seaport in Manhattan on October 1. And it will be better and bigger than it was before Covid played spoilsport for a couple of years.

    Dr Gupta, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.G., former President of IALI (Indian Association of Long Island) and AAPI-QLI (American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin of Queens and Long Island), also told the august gathering of former and current AIA office holders and members as well as community leaders that time has come to add to the numerous achievements and milestones of AIA’s past, both at the State and Federal Levels.

    “We are working with our Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar and Speaker of the House Carl Heastie to get Diwali Holiday approved for the entire New York State, not just NYC. We are also working with Congresswoman Grace Meng on Bill HR 3336 to get Diwali declared as a federal Holiday,” Dr Gupta said to applause in the legislative chamber of Nassau County. Stressing that these endeavors require moral and financial commitments from all of us, he implored all to support AIA, the NY chapter, and Indian culture to the best of their capabilities.

    Dr Gupta, an eminent gastroenterologist, added that post-Covid, to serve the community better they are starting a series of programs via Zoom on physical and mental health. The reach of cultural awareness and educational programs will be expanded with webinars and shows. Dr Gupta encouraged participation in AIA activities by generation-next, adding, “We will encourage and induct young leadership. Atul Kukar, Anuj Goenka, Pallavi Manvar, Amar Manvar and many others like them, who grew up with our motto of ‘Indian Heritage and American Commitment’, have great potential to become young AIA leaders.” Dr Gupta praised his able executive committee team, which includes Dr Tara Lodha as Secretary, Nilima Madan as Joint Secretary, Antia Harish Thakkar as Treasurer, Vice Presidents Dr Vijaypal Arya, Vimal Goyal, Dr Sunil Mehra and Beena Kothari.

    Passing the baton to Dr Gupta, Harish Thakkar, who served two terms as President from 2019-22, wished him success and all his support. Thakkar said that when they could not hold the popular Deepavali event in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid, they organized an event at Nasdaq in Manhattan with the massive Nasdaq screen flashing Diwali greetings. They also extended all help possible to the distressed members of the community, including serving food to the needy. PPP materials were provided to health and essential workers.

    Others who spoke briefly included Animesh Goenka, Dr Shashi Shah, and Dr Narinder Kukar, all past Presidents of AIA National. Nilima Madan and Beena Kothari ably emceed the program.

    A classical Indian dance performance was given by Shreya, a student of Satya Pradeep.

    A vegetarian dinner concluded the event. The program was covered by the television media.

    Incoming President Dr Gupta has many accomplishments in the medical profession. Born and raised in Hisar, Haryana, he graduated from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi in 1966. He completed his residency and fellowship training at Long Island College Hospital (LICH). He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology. He is also on the Board of Trustees of the Academy of Medicine in Brooklyn. An Assistant Clinical Professor at SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn, he has been on the TOP DOCTORS list of Castle Connolly for over 20 years consecutively and was designated as SUPER DOC by New York Times for three years. Last year he had the opportunity to serve as the President of the King County Medical Society during its Bicentennial Year Celebrations. He is very active in National AAPI and is on the board of the AAPI Charitable Foundation.

    LONG ISLAND, NY (TIP): The community stood together in joy and pride at the celebration of 12th Outstanding Women’s Achievement Gala on March 5, a part of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day Celebrations. At the gala, attended by over 300 guests, five distinguished women with the highest caliber were honored for their achievements. Chairperson Indu Jaiswal and Gala Chair Shammi Singh, both known for their strong commitment and dedication to the community cause, along with the entire team of IAF, were the organizing force behind the GALA.

    New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar and Town of North Hempstead Clerk Ragini Srivastava were described as symbols of woman empowerment and success in his welcome address by Dr. Bobby Kalotee.

    Five distinguished women who had excelled in their profession and community services were presented with Outstanding Women’s achievements Awards. They were also presented with Citations from Deputy Supervisor Dorothy Goosby from Town of Hempstead, Joseph Saladino , Supervisor Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County Comptroller Office Elaine Phillips, Town of North Hempstead Clerk Ragini Srivastava.

    The honorees included Sandhya Bhatia, Branch Manager, Vice president of Flushing Bank , Nayana Brahmbhatt – a BAPS Volunteer, Vandana Jauhar, a leading musical artist and singer, Dr. Parul Dua Makkar, the owner of PDM Family Dental in Long Island, and Dr. Purvi Parikh, an allergist and immunologist at Allergy and Asthma Associates of Murray Hill. Young Achiever Ria Parashar is a volunteer at Children’s Hope and helps the Special Needs Community. The honorees were graciously moderated by Ratna Bhalla, Inesha Joneja, Chanbir Sethi, Roopam Maini, Dr. Prachi Dua, Dr. Pallavi Singh and Sunita Manjrekar.

Bare Foot Empress follows the remarkable journey of Karthyayani Amma, who having never access to education as a girl finally gets to join a first-grade class at the age of 96 years.   • GOPIO New York & SIAEA With the Consulate General of India in New York Celebrate Culture of India at Virtual Holi Festival

    NEW YORK (TIP): Holi is the national festival of colors, celebrated across India in different forms and traditions. The celebration of this colorful festival brings people of different faiths with diverse socio-political ideologies closer. This message of unity in diversity was shared by the Chief Guest, India’s Consul General in New York, Randhirkumar Jaiswal during the annual Holi celebrations organized by GOPIO New York Chapter in collaboration with the Society of Indo-American Engineers Architects (SIAEA) in collaboration with the Consulate General of India In New York on Sunday, March 20th, 2022.

    Chief guest and honored distinguished guests speakers of the event:

    In his eloquent address to the Diaspora community, Ambassador Jaiswal greeted the participants from around the world on the occasion of Holi Festival, who had joined from all major continents on Earth, as hundreds of Indian Diaspora members came together virtually to celebrate the Festival of Holi. While describing the historical and symbolic traditions of the festival of Holi, the veteran diplomat said, “Holi is a very beautiful festival of color. A festival that helps us welcome spring. Holi has several connotations, social, religious, political, and rhythmic with nature. Holi is about togetherness, unity and oneness, and holding handstogether, celebrating the goodness and kindness of humanity,” he said. He urged the participants to take a moment out to pray for peace.

    Congressman Tom Suozzi of Long Island, NY greeted the community with “Holi Mubarak” to all. Describing Holi as an exciting time for all, a great friend of India and the Indian American community, Rep. Suozzi said, “It’s great to be with you all to celebrate the festival of Holi, which reminds us of all that Spring is in the air as the flowers start blooming and we await new life and happiness. Thank you for your continued support, and I will do everything in my power to represent the Indian American community in Long Island at the US Congress and the interests of India.” Recalling his childhood as a first generation Irish American, he was taught to remember the 3 Is, Ireland, Italy, and Israel, and now, “There are for Is: Ireland, Italy, Israel and India.”

    In her message, NY Senator Ana Kaplan, greeted the Indian community in New York a very Happy Holi. She praised the contributions and achievements of the Indian American community. She recalled how in her own tradition; her community celebrates the arrival of the Spring. “New York is a melting pot that brings people of all faiths and of all backgrounds,” she said, and wished, May all of us experience peace, overcoming all hurdles on the way.”

    New York Senator Kevin Thomas shared with the audience how he has made it a point to bring Holi and other Indian festivals to the New York State Chambers, distributing Samosas and sweets to the members of the elected officials in Albany. He invited GOPIO to join him and other elected officials in Albany to celebrate Holi in person, after having to celebrate Holi virtually in the past 2 years due to Covid. “We hope, this is the last of all virtual celebrations,” he said, and hoped that “From now on, we can celebrate the festivities in person, meeting one another, joining our hands together,” he said.

    The colorful Holi celebrations depicting the rich cultural heritage of India, organized by the GOPIO New York, the first Chapter of Global Organization of People of Indian Origin, showcased the rich, colorful, and vibrant traditions of India, bringing them at the doorsteps of every household, as the audience from around the world were entertained with mesmerizing music, scintillating dance performances, and inspiring speeches.

    Lal Motwani, Chairman of GOPIO New York and Executive Trustee of GOPIO International, and former president of the SIAEA, in his address, greeted Honorable India’s Consul General of New York, Randhir Kumar Jaiswal and officials, members and the leaders of GOPIO from around the world who have joined virtually to celebrate the colorful festival of Holi.

    “The vibrancy of colors is something that brings in a lot of positivity in our lives and Holi being the festival of colors is actually a day worth rejoicing,” Motwani said. “Holi is considered as one of the most revered and celebrated festivals of India and it is celebrated in almost every part of India, transcending every region, and people of all faiths, including Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Parsees, Buddhists, and Jains. It represents the uniqueness of Indian culture as we, from all backgrounds stand united to welcome Spring, as Mother Nature breathes freshness into our lives and that of every living creature on Earth. Welcome to each and every one of you and wishing you and your families A VERY HAPPY HOLI!”

    Ketan Shah, President of SIAEA served as co-emcee and introduced the speakers, executive team of GOPIO and SIAEA boards at the event and thanked the several sponsors who made the event successful by their financial support.     Second-generation Indian Americans, including a 16-yr old Aditi shared with the audience their perspectives, experiences of celebrating Holi and what it meant for them.  A beautiful Hindi poem on Holi composed and narrated by Anju and Sneha Singhi, a young artist was appreciated by one and all. Members of the dance troupe led by Staya Narayn Charka of the Ananda Ashram performed Kathakali, reliving the stories from the Indian Epic, Mahabharat. Navya Paingoal, Renu Kundem, and Michelle Sadat a fine vocalist also delighted the event with their beautiful singing.

    A live Bollywood medley by Anwar Hussain and friends from Jaipur, India representing a family of 12 generations serving the royals, was much appreciated, and loved by all. Begum of Bollywood Maharaja from Jaipur, a famous singer who is the 1st woman from her community to perform publicly, mesmerized the audience with her beautiful voice.

    Miss Teen India Sidhya Ganesh from the state of Washington delighted the audience with a live Holi Dance. The Chander family consisting of Anil, Harish, Gopi Arti Rajpresented a Bollywood Medley, mesmerizing the audience with their beautiful voice singing some of the very popular numbers from the evergreen Hindi movies.  Dinesh Mirchandani, a founder, and CEO of Sargam Music Academy delighted the occasion with his classical vocal singing.

    Anindita Nanda, a classical dancer and choreographer, who has presented and produced over 500 shows in the past two decades and a scientist in Pharma from Danbury CT presented Ganapathi Stothram and a Bharatnatyam Pallavi. A much sought-after touring artist, Anindita is regularly presented by Embassies, Museums, Universities, Libraries, Schools and Cultural Institutions across the United States, Europe, South America, and India. She is the founder and director of Sur-Taal, and She teaches in CT, NYC, Boston, West Coast, Germany, and Rome.

    Beena Kothari, a prominent community leader and GOPIO – NY President poetically described the importance of Holi and served as an emcee of the event. Holi has become known as India’s most vivid, joyous festival.  Holi is being celebrated in the Indian subcontinent for centuries, with poems documenting celebrations dating back to the 4th century CE. It marks the beginning of spring after a long winter, symbolic of the triumph of good over evil. It is celebrated in March, corresponding to the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna. On the eve of the festival, large pyres are lit in many parts of India to signify the burning of evil spirits.

  • GOPIO led community delegation meets Mayor Eric Adams and his top officials

    NEW YORK (TIP): GOPIO officials along with other Indian community organizations were invited to New York city Hall on March 1st to discuss issues of the Indian community and perspectives on how the community can be involved in the city. It all started with GOPIO’s condemnation of the defacing of Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Union Square Park in February and GOPIO requesting Mayor Eric Adams to increase police presence in the park area as well as to apprehend and punish culprit.

    At the beginning of the meeting, GOPIO Chairman Dr. Abraham thanked Mayor Adams for appointing many Indian Americans in high position of the city administration. In addition to the issue of defacing of Mahatma Gandhi statue, many other issues were discussed at this power meeting of the City officials with the community. The community representatives urged the mayor to keep status que on gifted and talented classes for elementary classes. The delegation told the city officials that the gifted should always be given the opportunity to advance further in pursuit of knowledge and to achieve their full academic potential. Other issues brought out include discrimination, civil rights violations and violence against religious institutions in New York city. Chief Advisor Lewis Martin suggested to set up a committee from the community to work closely with NYPD on some of these issues. The following have been nominated to work on these issues with Girish Patel coordinating this effort along with Braj Aggarwal, Lal Motwani, and Beena Kothari. This committee will reach out to the larger Indian community on these issues.

    Once major part of the discussion was on how to bring businesses to New York City, vis-à-vis New York businesses setting up business in India. The delegation told city officials that many Indian companies are setting business outfit in the US and that Indian Americans in New York city could serve as conduit to reach out to businesses in India. It was suggested that whenever trade and business delegations come to New York, City’s International Affairs Department must reach them out and hold meetings with them. Another Business Promotion Committee headed by Dr. Abraham was nominated along with Prof. Rajasekhar Vangapaty, Sudhir Vaishnav, Mukund Mehta, Ketan Shah and Karthikeya Parashar.

    The delegation also suggested the city officials to continue with Diwali celebration and to hold a special celebration from the City for the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence to honor the largest democracy of the world.

    After the meeting with city officials, the delegation met Mayor Eric Adams and interacted with him. Mayor Adams gave high marks for the community’s contribution to make New York an exciting city to live.

    HICKSVILLE, NY (TIP): IDP USA (India Day Parade) Long Island, New York, first time ever arranged curtain Raiser for Parade on Thursday May 23rd, 2019 Curtain Raiser of Parade which will be held on August 4th, 2019. And the route of Parade is from Patel Brothers to Town Parking opposite Asa Main Mandir in Hicksville.

    The celebration was held at Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Ave., Mineola.  Guest of Honor was Ms. Shamita Shetty, a Bollywood Star.

    Human Rights Commissioner Mr. Zahid Syed did the opening and introduced the Advisor of Parade Mr. Mukesh Modi, who partnered with Vice President of IDP, Mrs. Bina Sabapathy for Masters of Ceremony.  The Parade’s Curtain Raiser ceremonies were done by the TEAM IDP USA under the leadership of President Mr. Jasbir Jay Singh.

    Honorary guest Presiding Officer, Nassau County Legislator Mr. Richard Nicollelo spoke about the Indian American community.  Nassau County Legislators Laura Scheffer and Joshua Lafazan gave proclamations to Ms. Shamita Shetty as she was Celebrity guest of Honor from Bollywood.  Dr. Urmilesh Arya, Mr. Naveen Shah of Navika, Mr. Harry Bolla of Bolla Oil, Mr. Amandeep Singh (Tony) of Food Universe and Mr. Sanjay Patel of Patel Brothers were also honored with Citation by the Government Officials both from Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Legislative Chambers. Mr. Kamlesh Mehta, founder IDP and other IDP Past Presidents Mrs. Indu Jaiswal, Mr. Mohinder Taneja, Mr. Peter Bhedda, Mrs. Beena Kothari shared the golden unforgettable memories of past years of Parade and blessed Jay Singh with good wishes and promised their support for ever to IDP.

    Founder Bobby K Kalotee was on live call from out of town, welcoming all team and assuring his support.  Other prominent speakers were IALI President Mr. Lalit Aery, LILC President Pinki Jaggi and Jyoti Gupta, Suhag Mehta of Ganesh Utsav, Ashmita Yogiraj, Sadhvi ji from Maharaj Ashutosh Sansthan and few more from community.

    Program started with delicious snacks and tea from Mint Restaurant.  It was attended by more than 250 attendees and all the community leaders along with the Presidents of All Local Organization and Committee Members.  It was covered by TV and News Paper Media including ITV Gold, Radio Mirchi, PTC, Jus Broadcasting. The South Asian Insider, The India Republic, Global Punjabi, Diss Dash, Hum Hindustani.  The Indian Panorama, TV Asia and Parekh Worldwide Media and representatives.   After the program delicious dinner was served by Mint Restaurant Mr. Gary Sikka and homemade sweets by Mrs. Goel.  Bindu Kohli was acknowledged for her celebrity arrangement.  The Media was arranged by the Media Chair Indu Gajwani.

    Indian American community celebrates Veterans Day

    LONG ISLAND, NY (TIP): During the beautiful week of Thanksgiving, as Holiday season started, members of Indian American Community joined together and started initiative for Our Veterans Families in USA. Collections for Veterans Families was started by NY State Senator Kemp Hannon in Garden City, Long Island.

    Several members of IAF, IALI, Ladies Club and other groups started collecting nonperishable items to be sent as donations to soldiers and veterans of US Army.

    Donations were given on Nov 22 at Senior Bethpage Community Center in Hicksville Long Island. IAF conducts senior programs at the Bethpage Center every fourth Tuesday of the month.

    Mr Richard Olson, President of Adopt a Battalion Program in Massapequa accepted the donations on behalf of the Veterans Group. Senator Hannon praised the efforts of the Indian American Community and thanked them for this initiative.

    Beena Kothari, President of India Association of Long Island Presented Medals of Appreciation to Senator Hannon, Mr Richard Olson, Mr Vijay Goswamy and to Anu Gulati.

    LONG ISLAND, NY (TIP): Rajasthan Association of North America have invited all Indians residing in the Tri-State area to the Spring Festival Celebrations on Saturday March 26, 2016 at Hotel Hilton, Long Island Huntington, Melville NY 11747 from 2.30 pm onwards.

    Under the inspired leadership of President Naveen C Shah, RANA has successfully organized the Rajasthan Mahotsav – Festival of Festivals 2015 with over 3000 attendees from the Indian community, complete with a grand parade featuring elephants, horses and camels to various dance & musical performances showcasing the variety and depth of Indian culture. The Deepavali celebrations in November 2015 was another monumental sensation with over 600 people packing the Grand Ballroom at the Long Island Marriott and were entertained by the sensational music trio from India – Dhwani.

    In his address to the Community Leaders at the kick-off meeting held recently, Naveen C Shah mentioned that RANA has proven that we can celebrate all our festivals on one common platform. We want to continue this practice this year by organizing the Spring Festivals Celebrations.

    A press release issued by RANA says, “Our program for the 2016 SPRING FESTIVALS Celebrations includes a Fashion Show event showcasing the attire of different states from India by top fashion designers, a segment on Wedding Day Attire by Community members and cultural performances. This will be followed by a Kavi Sammelan featuring renowned poets and satirists from India, emceed by the incomparable Shailesh Lodha. We expect over 1000 people to attend the event.

    “RANA is committed to promote the rich culture of India by observing many traditional festivals and celebrating them in North America periodically. We expect people from all Communities – Rajasthani’s, Gujarati’s, Punjabi’s and all other Indian Communities to attend the day’s events and partake of the celebrations. RANA aims at bringing about harmony and celebrating the festivals of India jointly with other communities to foster the spirit of brotherhood and comradeship.”

    Tickets cost only $75 each and include Lunch, Afternoon Tea & Snacks, Dinner and entrance to the Fashion Show, Cultural Entertainment, Kavi Sammelan & Exhibitions area.

    Town of Hempstead Celebrates India’s Republic Day

    HEMPSTEAD, NY (TIP): On a beautiful Tuesday, January 26 morning Town of Hempstead Town Hall was busy and bustling with vibrant Indian Tricolors.

    The occasion was the 13th India Republic Day Celebrations organized by Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J Santino and Board members of Indian American Forum. On January 26, Tuesday morning at 9.00AM Mr. Santino, Hempstead Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmed, Senior Councilwoman Ms. Dorothy Goosby, Indu Jaiswal Chairperson of Indian American Forum, Beena Kothari President India Association of Long Island, Dr. Ajay Lodha President Elect National AAPI, Dr. Madhu Korapatti President of AAPIQLI, Satnam Singh Parhar Past President of IALI, Padma Shree Dr. Nori, Dr. Kishore Kuncham and several community leaders joined in raising the Flag outside the town Hall followed by Indian national anthem. Ms. Nasrin Ahmed, Hempstead town clerk hosted special breakfast in her office.

    On January 28, The Board of trustees and, members of Indian American Forum organized the thirteenth India Republic Day Celebration at Nathan L.H, Bennett Pavilion, Hempstead Town Hall.

    Honorable Supervisor Anthony J Santino hosted the Republic Day Celebrations. The town Hall was decorated with Indian flags and patriotic songs were played all over. Supervisor Santino was joined with Senior Councilwoman Ms. Dorothy Goosby, council member Bruce Blakeman, Councilwoman Erin king Sweeney and Town Clerk Nasreen Ahmed. Several elected officers, judges and dignitaries were present and enjoyed this unique evening of celebrations. Supervisor Santino welcomed everyone and praised the efforts of Indian American Community in USA.

    Indu Jaiswal, Chairperson of IAF, welcomed everyone and acknowledged the presence of all community leaders and support of various organizations present and participating in the program… Board of Trustees of IAF and leaders of several organizations, along with Honorees and Keynote speaker joined together and presented an award to Supervisor Santino, congratulating him on his landslide victory in elections and for his continued support towards the Indian American Community.

    India Republic Day Awards were presented to Ms. Raji Kuncham, Past President of TLCA; Raji has been helping in Art of Living Foundation, Interfaith Nutrition Network and India Association of Long Island.

    Mr. Anand Ahuja a well-known Attorney in the tristate was honored for his professional achievements and contributions.

    Dr Parveen Chopra welcomed every one and introduced Honorable Supervisor Santino. Dr. Ajay Lodha, President elect National AAPI, was the Key note speaker.

    Roubin Singh Thind led the Pledge of Allegiance andNational anthems were sung by seniors from Happy Home and Jyotika Patel, Opening prayers were done by Pandit Ramesh Choudhary, priest from Vedic Heritage, Inc., Hempstead.

    Lighting of the lamp was coordinated by Dr Parveen Chopra, Jaya Bahadkar and Ratna Bhalla. Patriotic songs were sung by Jyoti Gupta, Amita Karwal and Rekha Chichara. Manik Malhotra from Divya Jyoti Sansthan in Baldwin sung medley of patriotic songs. Folk dances and other performances were presented by students of Shilpa Jhurani from Arya Dance Academy and local talents. Also present were winners of Miss Teen New York 2015 and Miss India NY 2015. Emcee for the evening was Sunita Manjrekar.

    End of the ceremony prayers done by priest Bharat Bhatt, priest from Sai Mandir USA Baldwin.
