Berlin (TIP): British-Palestinian surgeon Ghassan Abu Sitta has said that the German government has forcibly prevented him from entering the country. He was invited to address a conference in Berlin about his work in Gaza hospitals during the present conflict. However, the government forcibly prevented him from entering Germany, he said in a message posted on platform X. “Silencing a witness to genocide before the ICJ adds to Germany’s complicity in the ongoing massacre,” the surgeon said.
Abu Sitta was forced to flee Gaza in November after Israeli tank fire and lack of anesthetics at Al-Ahli Hospital made it impossible for him to work at the then last fully functioning hospital in Gaza City. Healthcare facilities in the beseiged enclave have continued to deteriorate at an alarming level since then due to Israeli bombardment.
Israel’s military assault on Gaza has sytematically targeted hospitals and healthcare infrastructure in the territory, Al Arabiya report citing agencies said. Since leaving Gaza in late November, the doctor has been raising awareness about the impact of Israel’s war, which has killed more than 33,000 Palestinians.
According to the Middle East Eye (MEE), in the initial weeks after Israel began its assault, Abu Sittah was the unofficial English-language representative of Palestinian doctors and surgeons treating Palestinians wounded by Israeli attacks.
He accused the Israeli military of using white phosphorus, which is illegal in built-up and populated areas like Gaza, and deliberately targeting children.
In an interview with MEE after he left Gaza, Abu Sitta said medics were using household items to treat patients because of an Israeli-imposed blockade on medical equipment entering the enclave. “Eventually, everything was running out. Initially, we replaced the antiseptic solution with washing-up liquid and vinegar,” Abu Sitta said.
“Then it ended up being morphine and having to do procedures without any anaesthetic. The situation was medieval-like.” Germany is currently subject to an International Court of Justic (ICJ) case filed by Nicaragua, which accuses it of “facilitating” Israeli genocide in Gaza. (NIE)

Jared Leto seen climbing hotel wall in Berlin
In an unexpected turn of events, actor Jared Leto was spotted climbing a wall of a hotel in Germany without using any harness. The video went viral on the internet soon after and sparked hilarious reactions. Jared Leto was spotted wearing a black tee with a pair of joggers, as he was seen climbing the stone wall of the five-star Hotel De Rome in Berlin without a harness. He climbed only a few feet off the ground to the hotel balcony, before tracing his way down by climbing back through the stone wall again. Although the intentions behind this act is still unclear, he was seen there with TikToker Younes Zarou, according to a report by TMZ. The actor was also seen shooting some other segments near the hotel, that included a smoke-filled shot as well. The small clip of Jared climbing the hotel wall went viral on Twitter, and generated hilarious responses. A tweet read, “bro thinks he is tom cruise.”

CHICAGO, IL(TIP): Mahatma Gandhiji 73rd death anniversary was observed with singing of Gandhiji’s favorite hymns, release of a book, swearing in of New Gandhi Memorial Board,powerful tributes by community leaders and floral tributes to the Mahatma Gandhi Statue in the National Heritage Park on McCormick Boulevard in Skokie, Illinois. The homage ceremonies opened with garlanding of Gandhi’s Statute followed by singing of the American national Anthem followed by the Indian national Anthem sung by Mrs Bharti Desai, renowned Gujarati singer. Suresh Bodiwala, Chairman of Gandhi Memorial Foundation, Chicago welcomed the guests and announced the new officers of the Board of Directors: Chandrakant Modi MD, Founder, Suresh Bodiwala, Chairman, Dr. Mrs. Santosh Kumar, President, Dr. Sriram Sonty & Dr. Vijay G Prabhakar Vice Presidents and Mrs. Bharti Desai, Treasurer. Chairman Suresh Bodiwala applauded the Founder of the Gandhi Memorial, Chandrakant Modi MD who personally donated over $150,000 dollars in 2005 to facilitate this Gandhi Statue in Skokie. Chairman Suresh Bodiwala hoped that the new Board will expand the organization’s activities to be more global in outlook and involve all other communities in cherishing Gandhi’s vision.

Consul General Amit Kumar released a Book: “Lasting Legacy of Gandhiji -Ma Santosh Kumar” and Dr. Sriram Sonty received the first Copy of the book. Dr. Sriram Sonty said that 7 June 1893, the day young Gandhi was thrown out of the Durban to Pretoria train at the Pietermaritzburg Railway station was the turning point in Gandhi’s life. From that date, Gandhi took up the fight against racial oppression and Gandhiji’s nonviolence movement was born, he added. Dr. Sonty said that when he personally visited that Railway station in 1983, it led him to become a staunch Gandhi follower.
Ms. Nisha Modi daughter of the Gandhi Memorial Founder Dr. C.M. Modi acknowledged the honor bestowed on her parents at the event. Dr. Sreenivas Reddy, President, American Association of Multiethnic Physicians, Chicago read the message U.S. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi sent for the occasion. U.S. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi in his message reminded us of a Gandhi quote,” It is not just words. Action expresses priorities.” That defined Gandhi’s own life, as well as your work to honor him and his legacy. Germany sees positive trend in Covid-19 infections
Berlin: The number of new Covid-19 infections in Germany remained below the previous week’s levels, with another 14,022 cases reported within one day, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said. So far, more than 2.19 million infections have been registered in Germany since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to the federal government agency for disease control and prevention. The death toll related to Covid-19 stood at 55,752, Xinhua news agency reported on Friday. To stop the spread of infections in the country, Germany entered a second lockdown at the beginning of November. The lockdown, failing to reverse the trend in infections, was tightened and recently extended until mid-February. Non-essential shops, schools and restaurants in Germany were closed and strict contact restrictions imposed. The 7-day incidence nationwide also continued to decrease and reached October levels, with 94 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants over the last seven days, according to the RKI.

Curbs spark protests in Berlin
BERLIN (TIP): The German police unleashed water cannon and pepper spray to scatter thousands of protesters angry about Chancellor Angela Merkel’s plans to set a legal framework for enforcing Covid restrictions. Protesters near Berlin’s landmark Brandenburg Gate threw bottles at the police and set off smoke bombs, witnesses reported. The riot police detained some protesters while firing volleys of water and urging crowds by loudspeaker to disperse. The police detained 190 persons and nine officers were injured. — Reuters

Swiss identify glacier bodies as couple missing since 1942
BERLIN (TIP): Swiss police say they’ve formally identified two bodies found on an Alpine glacier as those of a couple missing for nearly 75 years. Valais canton (state) police said Wednesday that forensic experts using DNA analysis identified the two as Marcelin Dumoulin and his wife, Francine. They were 40 and 37, respectively, when they disappeared on Aug. 15, 1942. The couple’s daughter, now 79, has said her parents set off on foot to feed their animals but never returned. Police were alerted on Friday to the bodies on the Tsanfleuron glacier at 2,615 meters (8,580 feet) above sea level. Regional police have a list going back to 1925 of missing people. They note that, because of climate change, bodies of people missing for decades regularly emerge from receding glaciers. (PTI)
