Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan Engages with Indian-American Youth in an Interactive Community Session

MILPITAS, CA (TIP): The Association of Indo Americans (AIA) hosted a special interactive session for youth with Hon’ble Satish Kumar Sivan, Consul General of India, San Francisco, on September 16 in Milpitas. The exclusive session brought together middle school, high school, and college students for an open and engaging conversation on culture, identity, community, and opportunities for young Indian Americans.

The session provided a unique platform for youth to share their perspectives, ask questions, and discuss how they navigate and embrace both Indian and American cultures. The conversation explored ways young people can appreciate the richness of Indian traditions while also embracing the diversity, values, and opportunities of life in the United States.

Consul General Sivan encouraged the students to recognize the strengths of both cultures and thoughtfully discussed some of the challenges and gaps that young people may experience while balancing their cultural heritage with their lives in America. The discussion also focused on practical ways to bridge those gaps and help youth develop a broader, more versatile perspective.

Consul General Sivan also shared insights into the role of the Consulate General of India, San Francisco, and how the Consulate can support young people and help strengthen connections between the youth and the broader Indian-American community. He encouraged the students to remain engaged, curious, and open to learning from both cultures while building their own individual identities and paths for the future. Consul General shared that one of the best ways to learn about other places and cultures is by actually visiting them and spending time to understand, reason, and appreciate.

The participating students greatly appreciated the opportunity to interact directly with the Consul General and expressed their gratitude for his time, thoughtful perspectives, encouragement, and willingness to listen to their ideas and concerns.

The discussion highlighted the importance of creating more opportunities for meaningful youth–community–Consulate engagement, particularly as the next generation of Indian Americans grows up at the intersection of two rich and diverse cultures.

“Engaging our youth and giving them a platform to share their voices is essential to building a stronger and more connected community,” said the Association of Indo Americans Team. “We deeply appreciate Consul General Sivan for spending valuable time with our young people, listening to them, and sharing his insights and encouragement. These conversations can make a meaningful difference not only in the community, but also in the students’ homes, schools, and future careers.”

The Association of Indo Americans looks forward to continuing to create platforms that connect, empower, and inspire the next generation, while strengthening appreciation for Indian heritage and fostering greater understanding of the diverse communities in which Indian Americans live and contribute.
