Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has joined Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr on a 2-1/2 year contract, the club announced on Friday, December 30, after leaving Manchester United to become a free agent.

Ronaldo departed Old Trafford last month following an explosive television interview in which the 37-year-old forward said he felt betrayed by the club and did not respect their Dutch manager Erik ten Hag.

Al Nassr issued a statement saying the five-time Ballon D’or winner will join on a deal until 2025 but did not disclose any financial details. Ronaldo’s contract has been estimated by media to be worth more than 200 million euros ($214.04 million). “I am fortunate that I have won everything I set out to win in European football and feel now that this is the right moment to share my experience in Asia,” Ronaldo said in the statement.

“I am looking forward to joining my new team mates and together with them help the Club to achieve success.”

Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo left an emotional message for Juventus fans as he re-signed with Manchester United in a blockbuster deal on Friday. Ronaldo will be returning to Old Trafford after signing a two-year deal worth 25 million euros. The Portugal captain is headed back to the club where he won eight major trophies from 2003-2009. “Today I depart from an amazing club, the biggest in Italy and surely one of the biggest in all of Europe. I gave my heart and soul for Juventus and I’ll always love the city of Turin until my final days.

“The “tiffosi bianconeri” always respected me and I tried to thank that respect by fighting for them in every game, every season, every competition. In the end, we can all look back and realize that we achieved great things, not all that we wanted, but still, we wrote a pretty beautiful story together.

“I will always be one of you. You are now part of my history, as I feel that I’m part of yours. Italy, Juve, Turin, tiffosi bianconeri, you’ll always be in my heart,” Ronaldo posted on social media.

Ronaldo, signed by Juve in 2018 for 100 million euros ($117.90 million) from Real Madrid in the hope of leading them to an elusive Champions League title, will leave the club with 101 goals, two league crowns and a Coppa Italia to his name.

The 36-year-old won the Ballon d’Or as the world’s best player in 2008 at United alongside his team accolades, before sealing a then world record 80 million pounds move to Madrid.

After telling Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri on Thursday of his desire to leave Turin, widespread media reports claimed Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, had agreed personal terms with Premier League champions Manchester City.

But after City were said to have had a change of heart over the deal, rivals United got the transfer agreed.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s act wipes off $4 billion from Coca-Cola’s market value

A small gesture by star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo at a pre-match press conference — ahead of the Euro 2020 clash between Portugal and Hungary — has left a big dent in Coca-Cola’s market value.

At the pre-match press conference, Ronaldo pushed aside a couple of Coke bottles that were kept in front of him. The 36-year-old moved the bottles out of the frame and then went on to display a water bottle in front of the press gathered for the conference.

Ronaldo also said “agua” — which means water in Portuguese — after holding up the bottle of water as a sign of endorsement. His gesture soon went viral on various social media platforms and was shared widely across the globe.

Hours later, Coca-Cola, which is one of the official sponsors of Euro 2020, saw its market value dip by a whopping $4 billion.

Coca-Cola’s stock price dropped 1.6 per cent, down from $56.10 to $55.22 after the footballing star’s gesture. The market value of the popular beverage brand dipped $4 billion from $242 to $238 billion.

Issuing a statement on the matter, Coca-Cola said, “Players are offered water, alongside Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, on arrival at our press conferences.”

Coca-Cola further said “everyone is entitled to their drink preferences” and that everyone has different “tastes and needs”.

It is no secret that Ronaldo, one of the greatest footballers in the world, follows a strict diet and avoids sugary drinks. Even at 36, the Portuguese captain can give younger players a run for their money on any given day.

Belgrade (TIP): The Portugal captain’s armband which Cristiano Ronaldo angrily threw on the ground after his goal was incorrectly disallowed in a soccer World Cup qualifier against Serbia at the weekend, was picked up by Djordje Vukicevic, a duty firefighter. The blue armband with a white letter C was then put up for a charity auction by Vukicevic and his colleagues from Belgrade’s firefighting brigade to collect money for the treatment of six-month-old Gavrilo Djurdjevic from Serbia who is suffering from spinal muscular atrophy. “Ronaldo was agitated (and) he threw the armband, it fell right next to me,” Vukicevic told Reuters on Thursday. On Saturday, the 36-year-old Ronaldo, who plays his club football for Italian champions Juventus, stormed off the pitch and threw down the captain’s armband when he was denied a clear stoppage-time winner in the 2-2 draw in Serbia.

Many Serbians resort to fundraising and humanitarian auctions to collect money for medical treatments abroad when they cannot get adequate treatment at home.

Vukicevic said he was ready to sell any memorabilia he could collect from players to help Gavrilo’s parents collect 2.5 million euros ($2.94 million) for his treatment, but that the armband was a score.

“The entire crew agreed this (armband) will go for little Gavrilo,” he said. In the village of Cumic, just outside the city of Kragujevac in central Serbia, Gavrilo’s mother Nevena said the family had received donations of around 500,000 euros so far. She added that the proceeds from Ronaldo’s armband would be a significant contribution. “We could not believe that some people who do not even know us… would take the armband, auction it and help our child,’ she said. So far, bidders have offered around six million dinars ($60,042.03) during the auction on Serbia’s Limundo e-commerce platform. “This captain’s armband, which has attracted the most media attention of all armbands ever, can be yours if you join this charity auction and bid,” the advertisement says.
