Indian American Republican candidate Sen. Niraj Antani raises more than $600,000

OHIO (TIP): Ohio’s Indian American state Sen. Niraj Antani said Wednesday, January 3 that he has raised $612,348 in 38 days for his Congressional campaign. The fundraising efforts covered the 4th quarter, commencing from his campaign announcement on November 14th and concluding on December 31. Notably, this substantial amount was generated without relying on general election funds or self-funding.
Expressing his gratitude to his supporters, Sen. Antani, who represents the state’s sixth senate district, stated, “I am deeply grateful to my supporters. I have fought for the American Dream every day in the Ohio legislature, and I’ll do the same in Congress.”
The announcement comes following the retirement of Congressman Brad Wenstrup from Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District on November 8, 2023. Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District, spanning 16 counties across approximately 150 miles in southern Ohio, exhibits a significantly Republican-leaning partisan voter index. On November 13, Antani told the local media that he would be serving out his full term which ends December 31, 2024. “Today, I am announcing that I am not seeking reelection for the state Senate.”
Antani, born and raised in southern Ohio, was the first Member of the Ohio General Assembly to endorse President Trump for the 2024 election. Committed to managing China ties responsibly: US

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): US President Joe Biden on Monday, January1, assured his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping that he is committed to managing the bilateral ties “responsibly” as the two leaders exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the 45th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The two presidents met on the sidelines of the APEC summit in San Francisco in November and agreed to cool down the raging tensions between the top two economies of the world. In his message to Xi, Biden said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1979, the ties between the US and China have facilitated prosperity and opportunities for both the countries and the world. Biden said he is committed to “managing this important relationship responsibly”, adding that he looks forward to continuing advancing the US-China relationship based on the progress made by the predecessors of the two leaders and through multiple meetings and discussions between the two heads of state, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Their summit took place after a comprehensive round of talks between high-level officials of the two countries. In his letter, Xi urged Biden to earnestly implement the outcomes of the summit, saying history has already proven and will continue to fully prove that mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation are the right way for China and the US to get along with each other as two major countries. Xi pointed out that he and Biden, during their meeting in San Francisco, laid out a future-oriented “San Francisco Vision,” charting the course for the development of China-US relations.

Xi Jinping stressed that he was willing to work with Biden to continue to steer the course of China-US relations to benefit the two countries and their people and promote the cause of world peace and development.

During their summit, Xi and Biden agreed to resume high-level military communications which were severed after then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in 2022.

  • SUOZZI URGES BIPARTISAN APPROACH TO ADDRESS IMMIGRATION CRISIS

SUOZZI URGES BIPARTISAN APPROACH TO ADDRESS IMMIGRATION CRISIS

GLEN COVE, NY (TIP): Former Congressman Tom Suozzi , on January 2, called on President Biden, as well as House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Leader Hakeem Jeffries, to find common ground on border safety and immigration reform and urged the passage of bipartisan legislation to solve the migration crisis at the southern border and reform the immigration process.

In separate letters to the President and Speaker Johnson and Minority Leader Jefferies, sent this morning, Suozzi urged that they “prioritize immigration issues” and offered up proposals for a “comprehensive, moderate solution that finally secures our border and recognizes the hardships and suffering that have resulted from the federal government’s decades-long failure to address this very real problem.”

At a Zoom press conference held this morning, Suozzi stated, “The residents of New York’s 3rd Congressional District and the American people are angered by the inaction of their federal government on comprehensive immigration reform and border security.”

Suozzi continued that “one party, one chamber bills will not bring safe borders and immigration reform.” He stressed that “together, we must find common ground and pass a bipartisan, bicameral bill that will secure our borders and finally address the hardships and suffering caused by decades of inaction.”

Suozzi also discussed his prior proposal, crafted with former Republican Congressman Peter King in 2019, to bring “common sense solutions to secure our borders,” including better radar technology, improved ports of entry, enhanced physical barriers, more immigration judges, and more border patrol agents.

During the press conference, Suozzi pointed out that a key component of his 10-Point Plan, released on December 19, 2023, included common-sense measures to address the immigration crisis. Suozzi proposes that Congress provide more border security funding to hire additional border patrol agents, immigration judges, and asylum officers, as well as securing and implementing more smart technology. He also is in favor of enhanced physical barriers and an “Ellis Island” plan to help secure the border and bring order to the current crisis.”

“We should build a new, comprehensive complex at the border to expedite the processing of migrants. We should hire more immigration judges who would rule on asylum cases without delay,” Suozzi stated in his remarks. “Those migrants who have credible claims for asylum would be more effectively processed. And a clear protocol would be put in place to quickly deny entry to those who do not qualify. A workable plan to deport those applicants denied entry would be implemented.”

Joining Suozzi at his press conference, the Minority Leader in the Nassau County Legislature, Delia DeRiggi-Whitton expressed her disappointment in Suozzi’s opponent, Mazi Pilip, who has served for the last two years in the legislature with DeRiggi-Whitton.

“I had hoped that she would be someone who could make a difference in the legislature, someone who would speak up. But I have been so disappointed with her. She has followed the party line on every vote. She is not, in any way, proactive,” DeRiggi-Whitton said.

The Minority Leader added that “at our recent budget meetings, Pilip never even asked a single question.” “I’ve tried reaching out to her, tried to engage her in conversation, and she’s never tried to even speak with me,” revealed DeRiggi-Whitton. “That’s not the kind of Congressperson this district needs,” she added.

Pilip’s unwillingness to discuss important issues or policy, as well as her refusal to debate, has been noted in news accounts of her candidacy. Newsday recently reported that, in the county legislature, “a review of two years’ worth of transcripts shows Pilip speaks much less frequently than her colleagues. At many meetings, the only words she said into her microphone were “here” during roll call attendance and “aye” during vote tallies.”

When asked specifically which of Pilip’s votes troubled her, DeRiggi-Whitton replied,

“Democrats recently proposed a budget amendment to bolster the Nassau County Police Department by hiring 100 new police officers, and Mazi Pilip voted ‘NO,’ along with every other Republican.” “She had the chance to stand up for the people of Nassau, and instead, she stood down for her party. She had a chance to show her independence, a chance to vote for 100 new cops, and she refused,” DeRiggi-Whitton added later.

DeRiggi-Whitton concluded her remarks by saying, “We have lost a year of representation in Congress with George Santos. We can’t afford to lose any more time. We can’t wait for Mazi Pilip to ‘catch up.’ She later added, “We need someone in Congress like Tom Suozzi, who knows exactly how things work in Congress, or should I say, don’t work. Tom Suozzi can fix it.”

  • New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar introduces “SMOKEOUT ACT” to shutter illegal smoke shops in the State

New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar introduces “SMOKEOUT ACT” to shutter illegal smoke shops in the State

Assemblywoman’s Bill will close 36,000 illegal smoke shops statewide, including 1,500illegal shops fueling crime in New York City

SOUTH QUEENS, NY (TIP): Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar (D-AD 38) introduced the SMOKEOUT Act (A8428), one of her major priorities for passage this Albany session. The SMOKEOUT Act (Stop Marijuana Overproliferation and Keep Empty Operators of Unlicensed Transactions) grants municipalities across the State, including New York City, the power to immediately shutter all illegal, unlicensed smoke shops once and for all.

Illegal smoke shops are able to operate with almost total impunity because local municipalities lack authority to enforce cannabis shop violations. The 2021 bill passed in Albany legalizing recreational cannabis established a Cannabis Control Board as the only agency in the entire State authorized to close unlicensed cannabis retailers and order the seizure of merchandise. Currently, New York City can only raid a smoke shop if there is suspicion of certain other violations, such as untaxed cigarettes. Even then, the City cannot close the shops.

Upon passage of Assemblywoman Rajkumar’s SMOKEOUT Act, New York City and all municipalities across the State will have the authority to close illegal smoke shops and seize all merchandise. This will allow New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and law enforcement statewide, to get into action swiftly shutting down smoke shops and permanently eliminating their blight. Mayor Adams says when granted the enforcement power from Albany, he could clear up the smoke shops problem in 30 days.

The Assemblywoman revealed plans for her smoke shop legislation at a December Mayoral town hall in Corona, earning praise from Mayor Adams and loud cheers from the packed room of Queens community leaders.

Assemblywoman Rajkumar said at the town hall, “I am proud to announce today that in our State Capitol this session, I am introducing a bill to expand the City’s power to shut down the illegal, unlicensed smoke shops that are plaguing our communities. These unlicensed illegal smoke shops are endangering the children of our community and they are hotbeds of crime.”

Mayor Adams said at the town hall, “The Cannabis Law that was passed was supposed to allow only those legal shops to open. The problem with the law, it did not give local municipalities the power and authority to go in and enforce the illegal shops. We are asking the representatives in Albany, that was the bill that Assemblywoman Rajkumar was talking about. We are saying, ‘Give us the enforcement power.’ Right now, the State has the enforcement power and the State does not have the manpower to do the enforcement power. And so many of these places are opening and they’re laughing at the fines. It’s the price of doing business. They’re making so much money that they’re just opening and continuing to sell to our children. And so we’re hoping this year in Albany that we are now going to get the enforcement power.”

New York City is now home to an estimated 1,500 shops illegally selling cannabis without a license; there are an estimated 36,000 statewide. Smoke shops have become a magnet for crime in New York City: filled with valuable contraband and loose cash, they are a tantalizing target for armed robberies. Such robberies skyrocketed from 137 in 2021 to 593 in 2022, or almost 1 robbery for every 2 smoke shops. In 2023 alone, there have been at least five fatal shootings in smoke shops, including one in Assemblywoman Rajkumar’s district.

Often these unlicensed smoke shops also sell other contraband including untaxed cigarettes and psychedelics. Some offer edibles appealing to children, packaged to resemble sugar cereals and other popular children’s snacks. Shops are opening across the street from schools.

Besides breeding crime and endangering neighborhoods, illegal smoke shops unfairly compete with the legal cannabis dispensaries authorized by the Cannabis Law of 2021. These legal operators underwent a lengthy licensure process and sell rigorously tested and regulated cannabis. Legal shops cannot meet the prices of illegal shops’ unregulated cannabis, and there are only 40 legal dispensaries across the State. This undermines the legalized cannabis program’s intent to provide economic empowerment to people who were impacted in the past by Draconian drug laws, and to reinvest in communities that were historically targeted for enforcement.

Cannabis products from illegal shops even present a danger to the users. A random sampling of illegal smoke shop cannabis products found that 40% contained dangerous contaminants such as E. coli, salmonella, lead, and pesticides. None met the safety standards of New York’s legal cannabis.

The current rate of smoke shop closures, however, is unacceptably slow, moving at snail’s pace since municipalities lack the authority to shutter them on their own. The staggering number of shops, combined with limited resources by the Cannabis Control Board, has resulted in it issuing only 305 orders for illegal smoke shops to close during 2023. This amounts to less than 1% of illegal shops. Even then, the Board often takes no action to enforce the order to close, and illegal shops continue to operate anyway.

Assemblywoman Rajkumar is working with a broad and diverse coalition of community leaders across the City to drive her SMOKEOUT bill through Albany. She has already been in discussions with the Office of the New York City Sheriff, which conducts smoke shop raids.

After introducing the bill, Assemblywoman Rajkumar said, “It is time to immediately close all 36,000 illegal smoke shops across our state, including the 1,500 illegal smoke shops fueling crime in New York City. My legislation puts the power back in the hands of the people and municipalities, so that we can stop the sale of unlicensed cannabis that is endangering our children and our neighborhoods. We will come together as one State this Albany session and eliminate these epicenters of crime.”

Indian community activist in US welcomes move allowing diaspora members to contribute to Ram Mandir

NEW YORK (TIP): As preparations are underway for the consecration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, a prominent Indian community activist here has welcomed measures allowing diaspora members to contribute to the development of the temple.

Social activist Prem Bhandari had earlier appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow members of the Indian diaspora across the world to contribute to the development of the Ram Temple in Uttar Pradesh. Asserting that there are over 3.5 crore Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin around the world, he said that many of them would like to contribute to the development of the temple.

Provisions have now been made on the website of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra for holders of the Indian as well as Non-Indian Passport to make donations and contributions.

The website notes that the Trust has obtained registration under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) 2010, and “devotees holding Non-Indian Passport can now voluntarily contribute towards the objectives of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.” Bhandari, who founded the ‘Overseas Friends of Ram Mandir’ organization, welcomed this step and urged members of the 3.5 crore-strong Indian diaspora across the globe to contribute to the Trust.

Ahead of the Pran Pratishtha (installation of the deity) ceremony in Ayodhya on January 22, Bhandari said it will be a “historic opportunity” and Indian devotees from around the world will now be able to contribute any amount they deem fit for this special occasion that has come after 550 years. He added that he, along with the Overseas Friends of Ram Mandir organization, has started reaching out to Indian diaspora members globally from the New Year and is providing them with the link to send their voluntary donations directly to the temple.

Bhandari said that the prime minister thinks not just about the 140 crore Indians living in the county but also about the sentiments of the 3.5 crore diaspora living across the globe by allowing its members to contribute to the Ram Mandir.

“January 22 will be a historic day. We are so fortunate that we are seeing the inauguration of Ram Mandir in our lifetime. It is a dream come true,” Bhandari said, adding that this day would not have been possible without the contributions of so many people and the “visionary leadership” of the prime minister.

“We feel as if Lord Ram is returning to Ayodhya on January 22 after vanvas. Such is the atmosphere and happiness there. Ayodhya will be the global capital of Hinduism soon,” he said.

The Ram Mandir will be consecrated on January 22, where Prime Minister Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and more than 6,000 people are expected to attend the grand “Pran Pratishtha” ceremony.

  • SUOZZI: ON THE GROUND IN ISRAEL

SUOZZI: ON THE GROUND IN ISRAEL

GLEN COVE, NY (TIP): While most Long Islanders were preparing for the long holiday weekend, Tom Suozzi was on the ground in Israel. “The reason I came here was to very clearly demonstrate my solidarity with Israel and with the Jewish people and learn first-hand, on the ground, of what exactly is happening in Israel,” explained Suozzi. The former Congressman met with his former constituents, Ronen and Orna Neutra, from Plainview, Long Island, whose son, Omer, an IDF tank commander, is being held hostage by Hamas terrorists.

“I can’t imagine what they are going through, incredible suffering, all the families of the hostages. Coming to Israel was an important way to bring attention to this issue,” Suozzi said.

Suozzi also met with Lt. Col. (Res.) Jonathan Conricus, the former International Spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces to discuss the geopolitical overview of Israel and was given up-to-the-minute reports on the fighting. Suozzi then toured Kibbutz Kfar Azza, located a few kilometers from the Gaza border (the “Gaza envelope”), where, on the morning of October 7th, 2023, Hamas terrorists carried out a bloody massacre, killing 60 people, including women, children, and infants.

“It was just devastating to see the carnage, awful, between the bullet holes and the
bloodstained ground, the markings on the buildings, dots, indicating where the murders had taken place. I will never forget it as long as I live,” Suozzi said. “Barbaric. Words cannot describe the horror of what I heard.”

“I hear sometimes that Hamas is described as a random, loose coalition of desert fighters. They are not. Hamas is a sophisticated, disciplined terrorist army that is intent on killing Jews everywhere and destroying the state of Israel, burning it to the ground,” Suozzi explained.

He said he was especially concerned about Hamas using human shields to protect their military assets. Suozzi referred to a bill that he had passed to penalize and sanction the use of these human shields.

“Hamas has amassed billions of dollars, and instead of building bridges for peace, they dug tunnels for terrorists,” said Suozzi. “It’s a very common practice here, part of the Hamas playbook, building a network of tunnels leading into hospitals and schools and apartment houses, hiding their weapons and bombs…they are the ones putting their people in harm’s way, they are killing their own people.”
“I’ve been hearing the slogan Free Palestine a lot lately. What we need to do is to ‘Free Palestine from Hamas,’ and figure out a way to bring peace to both sides.”

“This war is not about revenge or retribution; it is about stopping Hamas just like the world did against Osama and Isis and Al Qaeda.” Suozzi made a point to say that America needs “pro-Israel Democrats” to balance those in the party who are “very loud” opposing Israeli efforts and to work with Republicans who support Israel.

“One of the keys to the future of Israel is that we maintain a strong, bipartisan support for the state. So, we need strong, outspoken pro-Israel Democrats in Congress,” he added.

Suozzi traveled to Tel Aviv to visit Hostage Square, outside the Art Museum, where families and others gather to support and promote awareness for returning the hostages.

And he dined with Amos Harel, one of Israel’s leading media experts on military and defense issues to discuss the broader issues of regional strategy, the relationship of Israel with its neighbors and the future of the Middle East.

This was Suozzi’s third visit to Israel in recent years. In his first term, Suozzi, then a member of the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services Committee, visited in August 2017. Several years earlier, in 2002, during the Second Intifada, Suozzi traveled to Israel with the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC).

Senator John Liu shares his year-end thoughts with New Yorkers

BAYSIDE, NY (TIP): New York State Senator John Liu in a statement released to The Indian Panorama wished New Yorkers a Happy New Year and shared his thoughts with them
“As 2023 draws to a close, I wanted to take a moment to wish you and your family a happy and healthy New Year and joyous holiday season! I am honored to serve as your State Senator and wanted to take a moment to share some reflections with you as we turn the page on a new year.

As Chair of the Senate Committee on NYC Education, NYC’s public school children were on the top of my agenda. We reached a historical milestone this year with the Senate’s passage of my legislation to require the instruction of Asian American history in public schools. While we are still working with the Assembly to pass the bill, passage in the senate is a huge step forward in our fight against anti-Asian hate with the understanding that Asian American history is American history. This year, and for the first time ever, the state fully funded Foundation Aid, which is the main source of funding for NYC public schools. As the city and state face looming financial challenges, this funding commitment is imperative for the city to be able to meet its mandates to provide a sound, basic education for all public school kids.

We also passed landmark legislation that will give all students statewide a day off from school for Lunar New Year and all students in New York City a day off for Diwali!

The coming year is among the most revered and auspicious in the Lunar New Year calendar – the Year of the Dragon, symbolizing power, nobility, honor, luck, and success. As we enter 2024, let’s resolve to reflect on what it means to be Americans and remain mindful of our responsibilities as New Yorkers and citizens of the world. For my part, I will continue to push for public policies that improve the quality of our public education system, and commit to supporting programs and services that uplift our diverse communities in the New Year and beyond.

Wishing you and your loved ones all the best in 2024!”

NYC HEALTH + HOSPITALS SHARES ITS 2023 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Highlights include opening the new $923 million Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital on the campus of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health; answering the need for asylum seeker care and services; and investing in loan repayment for behavioral health staff

NEW YORK, NY (TIP): NYC Health + Hospitals, on December 21, shared an overview of its accomplishments for the year. Highlights include being recognized for the delivery of high-quality care to patients, new state of the art facilities, answering the need for asylum seeker care and services, and investing in the NYC Health + Hospitals’ workforce.

“NYC Health + Hospitals has so much to be proud of this year, and I want to thank our staff across the health system for the hard work they do every day to serve our patients and New Yorkers,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD. “We joined our sister agencies in the response to the asylum seeker crisis. In the face of a neighborhood power outage, we safely evacuated all of our patients from NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull and brought them back when it was safe. We opened a beautiful new hospital, the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health. And we made deep investments in our staff, with a salary increase for our nurses and loan repayment for some of our behavioral health staff.”

A list of the health system’s accomplishments for 2023 are below:

    Delivering Award-Winning, High-Quality Care

    • Newsweek ranked Seaview the #1 Nursing Home in New York State. Three of the health system’s other skilled nursing facilities ranked in the top ten, and the fifth was ranked in the top 30 out of 600 nursing homes statewide.

    • NYC Health + Hospitals’ Accountable Care Organization earned $8M from the federal government for reducing avoidable costs and meeting high standards of quality care for patients – $4M more than last year’s shared savings. NYC Health + Hospitals is the only health system in New York State to achieve savings for ten years in a row.
    • NYC Health + Hospitals expanded its DaVinci Surgical Robot program. To offer equitable access to all patients, the health system added nine surgical robots for a total of 12 across the system.
    • A new Lung Cancer Screening Program launched at three pilot hospital sites. To date 3,961 patients have been screened. The health system’s screening rate for patients is 24% of all those eligible, which is significantly higher than the national rate of 6%. Of those screened, 23% were Black; 25% were Hispanic; 24% were White; and 26% were Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander.

    New spaces and services

NYC Health + Hospitals opened a new hospital. The $923 million Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital on the campus of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health is a bright, beautiful space for patients to receive care. The 11-story building was designed to withstand the next 500-year storm. Hospital staff successfully transferred over 170 patients in an operation that began at 1am on a Sunday morning.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Correctional Health Services opened the first-ever reentry service center on Rikers Island, a resource hub for the hundreds of people who are released from Rikers each year as well as members of the public and staff. Correctional health is also providing free smartphones and wireless plans to clinically vulnerable patients upon their release from jail to help them remain engaged in care as they return to the community.

    • The health system launched telehealth abortion access through Virtual ExpressCare — becoming the first public health system in the nation to do so.
    • Seven new murals can be found around NYC Health + Hospitals thanks to the Arts in Medicine department’s Community Mural Project at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County; NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Sydenham; NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens; NYC Health + Hospitals/Coler; NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter; and NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Morrisania. Two more murals will arrive after the new year at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem and NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln.

    Meeting Challenges Head On

    • NYC Health + Hospitals remained at the forefront of the city’s response to the historic asylum seeker crisis, providing shelter, health care, casework, and social services to tens of thousands of asylum seekers at our humanitarian relief centers. Staff at the city’s Arrival Center registered and provided medical services to more than 85,000 asylum seekers since the facility opened in May. This year, our clinicians have completed over 30,000 visits to patients who are known to be migrants or asylum seekers.

In response to a neighborhood power failure, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull successfully and safely evacuated all of its patients and brought them back when it was safe.

    Finding Homes for Our Patients

    • 300 patients found permanent housing working with NYC Health + Hospitals’ Housing for Health team this year.
    • The health system broke ground on a new housing development on the NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull campus that will have 93 apartments, including 56 units of supportive housing for our patients.

    Food as Medicine

The Lifestyle Medicine Program, launched at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in 2019, began its citywide expansion. NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County all kicked off their Lifestyle Medicine programs this fall, with NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham/Vanderbilt to come in the spring.

    • All of the health system’s hospitals began serving plant-based meals as the primary choice for dinner, encouraging patients to eat tasty food that promotes better health outcomes.

    Investing in Behavioral Health

    • The health system opened a new Extended Care Unit at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County for patients who are discharged from psychiatric inpatient care and want continued support. Patients stay in the ECU for up to 90 days to work on rehabilitation and reintegrating into the community. The ECU at Kings County Hospital joins a successful program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue launched in 2020.
    • NYC Health + Hospitals finished converting back medical units to psychiatric units after COVID and are on track to have nearly 1,000 psychiatric beds online by the New Year.
    • NYC Health + Hospitals expanded our services for survivors of domestic violence by bringing behavioral health services to the city’s domestic violence shelter system, providing on-site services to adults and children. The initiative started in 9 shelters in 2023. The health system also opened two specialized mental health clinics for survivors at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln and NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County.

    Supporting our staff

    • NYC Health + Hospitals’ nurses had a big year: they gained pay parity with private hospitals thanks to a new NYSNA contract; celebrated with Mayor Adams at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Gouverneur for the citywide milestone of 5,000 nurses trained through the Nurse Residency Program in NYC; and were recognized with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Beacon award (NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln), DAISY Awards for Post-Acute Care Facilities, American Nurses Credentialing Center Pathway to Excellence designation (NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, and NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health), and the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award (South Brooklyn Health).
    • NYC Health + Hospitals distributed $1 million in debt relief to 27 behavioral health providers in exchange for a three-year commitment to serving our health system.

Using Creativity to Connect and Heal Our Patients

    • NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem CEO Georges Leconte let cameras follow him into his colonoscopy to destigmatize the procedure and encourage more people to get screened for colorectal cancer with help from Harlem Hospital Chief of Gastroenterology Dr. Joan Culpepper-Morgan.
    • Artist Modesto “Flako” Jimenez completed his yearlong residency with NYC Health + Hospitals’ gun violence prevention programs and the youth involved in them, leading to a new mural about Guns Down, Life Up at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, a modern adaption of Romeo and Juliet, a gallery exhibit at Materials for the Arts in Queens, a showcase at Carnegie Hall, and a short video about the collaboration.
    • NYC Care almost reaches the 125,000 members milestone. This fall, the program partnered with the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit to engage 30,000 NYC Care members who had not yet scheduled a primary care appointment, and connected them to care.
  • MAYOR’S OFFICE OF IMMIGRANT AFFAIRS DELIVERS KEY RESOURCES TO IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES

MAYOR’S OFFICE OF IMMIGRANT AFFAIRS DELIVERS KEY RESOURCES TO IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) Commissioner Manuel Castro, on December 21, released a list of key wins for immigrant New Yorkers. A comprehensive list of accomplishments and services delivered for the immigrant community will be released in MOIA’s 2023 Report on the City’s Immigrant Population and Office Initiatives. “This year, our office continued to work alongside city agencies, faith-based institutions and community partners to meet the needs of the asylum seeker humanitarian crisis, while still serving long time immigrant New Yorkers,” said MOIA Commissioner Manuel Castro. “I am proud to serve our immigrant communities and we will lead to fight for the rights and supports that immigrant New Yorkers need.”

MOIA delivered key resources to immigrant communities, including:

Releasing Informational Videos to Assist Asylum Seekers Navigate the Federal Immigration Process: In response to more than 150,000 migrants arriving to New York City, MOIA created informational videos to assist asylum seekers when navigating the federal immigration process. The instructional videos covered topics such as: “ice check-ins, immigration documents, and going to court.”

Creating the Asylum Seeker Legal Assistance Network: In the absence of a national strategy to support asylum seekers with their legal needs as they enter the country, MOIA launched the Asylum Seeker Legal Assistance Network (ASLAN), a $5 million investment to expand non-profit organizations’ capacity to provide immigration legal assistance for newly arrived asylum seekers. Through this network the contracted partners provided a combination of orientation sessions, legal screenings, application assistance, pro se assistance clinics, self-help materials, and other services.

Funding the Asylum Seeker Resource Satellite Sites: To continue to support asylum seekers with in-person social service, MOIA extended funding to the asylum seeker resources satellite sites. The satellite sites are in all five boroughs and provided services including job readiness training, comprehensive case management, and immigrant rights workshops in multiple languages.

Funding the Haitian Response Initiative: To continue to support Haitian community members, MOIA extended $1.3 million in funding to the Haitian Response Initiative. The Haitian Response Initiative consists of seven Haitian-led nonprofit organizations rooted in the Haitian community that provide community members with social and support services, and a Citywide immigration legal service provider that provides legal assistance to community members and capacity building trainings to CBOs.

Hosting a National Convening to Discuss the Asylum Seeker Response: MOIA hosted a national convening of over 23 cities to discuss how to advocate for additional federal support for the asylum seeker humanitarian crisis. Advocacy points included providing cities with more financial resources, expediting work authorizations for additional recent arrivals, and enacting a national decompression and resettlement strategy. Unveiling Immigrant Heritage Plaza: Originally known as “Public Place” within Bowling Green Park, MOIA renamed the historic space “Immigrant Heritage Plaza.” The plaza was renamed to honor all immigrants who built New York City, beginning with the first historically recorded immigrant who arrived, Juan Rodriguez. In addition to the receiving a commemorative plaque, the space will be used for immigrant related events.

Releasing an Immigrant Resource Road Map in Over 50 Languages: To ensure immigrant New Yorkers have information on city resources, MOIA released an immigrant resource road map in over 50 languages. The roadmap included a list of city resources and protected rights for all New Yorkers, regardless of their immigration status.

Hosting 35 Flag Raising Ceremonies: As the ultimate city of immigrants, MOIA along with the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs and Community Affairs, hosted 35 flag raising ceremonies. The flag raising ceremonies included cultural celebrations for countries including Nepal, Mexico, Kenya, and much more.

Kicking Off We Love Immigrant NYC Campaign: As part of our annual immigrant heritage celebration, MOIA launched the “We Love Immigrant NYC” campaign. The campaign aimed to highlight over 20 immigrant neighborhoods across the city.

UNITED NATIONS (TIP): Members of the United Nations Security Council observed Tuesday a minute of silence to mourn and honor Kuwait’s late Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
The UN lowered its flag to half-mast at its New York headquarters in honor of the late Amir on Monday, December 18.
The UN paid tribute to the late Amir describing him as a distinguished statesman, who contributed to the growth of understanding and cooperation in the Gulf and beyond, and pursued strengthened relations in support of peace and stability in the region and around the world. The ruling emir of the oil-rich nation Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, has died at the age of 86, just over three years after assuming power, Kuwaiti state TV announced.

His cause of death has not been revealed although the ruling emir was hospitalized last month “due to an emergency health problem” but was later reported to be in stable condition.

The small Mideast nation, which is the holder of the world’s seventh-largest oil reserve, borders Iraq to the north and Saudi Arabia to the south, has seen internal power struggles behind palace doors.

Kuwait state television broke into programming with Quranic verses just before a somber official made the announcement.

“With great sadness and sorrow, we — the Kuwaiti people, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the friendly peoples of the world — mourn the late His Highness the emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, who passed away to his Lord today,” said Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah Al Sabah, the minister of his emiri court, who read the brief statement.

State-run news previously reported that he had traveled to the United States for unspecified medical checks in March 2021.

Sheikh Nawaf was named crown prince in 2006 and became emir in September 2020 following the death of his brother, Sheikh Sabah, who had ruled for more than a decade and shaped the state’s foreign policy for over 50 years.

Sheikh Nawaf was the nation’s defense minister when Iraq invaded and occupied Kuwait in 1990, sparking the beginning of the first Gulf War. Kuwait has been a strong U.S. ally since then. Since he took over in 2020, Sheikh Nawaf has maintained a foreign policy that balanced ties with those neighbors, whilst domestically, eight governments were formed under his rule.

Sheikh Nawaf’s term was focused on domestic issues as the nation struggled through political disputes — including the overhaul of Kuwait’s welfare system — which prevented the sheikhdom from taking on debt. That policy left it with little in its coffers to pay bloated public sector salaries, despite generating immense wealth from its oil reserves.

In 2021, Sheikh Nawaf issued a long-awaited amnesty decree, pardoning and reducing the sentences of nearly three dozen Kuwaiti dissidents in a move aimed at defusing a major government standoff. He issued another just before his illness, aiming to resolve that political impasse that also saw Kuwait hold three separate parliamentary elections under his rule.

I could not do it without Champions Martial Arts and their dedication to giving back to the community. They are the reason why we are able to have successful toy drives each and every year.”

Suozzi Unveils 10-Point Plan to Help Restore Sanity to Washington and Get Things Done

GLEN COVE, NEW YORK (TIP): Former Congressman Tom Suozzi, on December 19, unveiled a 10-point plan to help restore sanity to Washington and get things done. The intention of Suozzi rolling out his plan is to demonstrate his belief that Congress needs to move beyond petty, partisan, and performative finger-pointing and focus on working across the aisle to get things done for the people he serves. Suozzi has a long record of working with Democrats and Republicans to tackle the problems that the people of Nassau and Queens face. Suozzi’s 10-Point Plan is in sharp contrast to his opponent Mazi Pilip’s refusing to answer reporter’s questions about her positions on the issues.
“Throughout my career, I have always prioritized delivering results for the people over petty partisan politics,” said Suozzi. “The growing influence of the far right and far left has led to gridlock in Congress. My 10-point plan is a blueprint to address the real concerns people face and my intention to work with anyone of goodwill who has the same objective of actually addressing challenging problems and working together to come up with a solution.”

The plan  details Suozzi’s blueprint to:
    1. Lower the Cost of Living, Repeal the SALT Cap, and Further Reduce Prescription Drug Prices
    2. Address the Immigration Crisis by Passing the Tom Suozzi-Peter King Compromise
    3. Protect the Long Island Sound, Provide Clean Drinking Water, and Address Climate Change
    4. Improve Public Safety and Get Guns off the Streets
    5. Stand Up to Extreme Attacks on Reproductive Freedom
    6. Support Israel and Ukraine
    7. Never Forget the Vet
    8. Expand Affordable Health Care and Long-Term Care, and Protect Social Security and Medicare

  • Robocalls wake up government finally

    Robocalls wake up government finally

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): Anyone with a mobile phone knows the unpleasant sensation of answering a call from an unfamiliar number only to hear a pre-recorded marketing or scam pitch from a company you have no interest in patronizing. Around 33 million robocalls are made each day to Americans, according to the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC)—more than 50 billion a year, says a Times report.

This is more than just an annoyance; in 2022, around 68 million Americans lost over $29 billion to scam callers, according to NCLC. These calls also make people less likely to answer their phone or trust valid phone calls they do receive, making the nation’s significant telecommunications infrastructure less valuable.

One of the most frustrating things about these calls, says Margot Saunders, senior counsel at NCLC, is that they are largely illegal. Government regulations say that a telemarketing call is only legal to a cell phone or residential line if the recipient of the call has provided “prior express written consent” to that call. (This is similar to rules of the National Do Not Call Registry, though consumers must opt in to that registry through the website of the Federal Trade Commission.) But often, the sellers and the telemarketers calling for them don’t have this consent.

The reason they’re getting away with continuing to make these calls is that the sellers, often big well-known companies, hire telemarketing firms to make the calls on their behalf. Often, these telemarketing firms buy consumer information—and, they argue, consent—from other companies, in a billion-dollar business called lead generation. Lead generators typically take one agreement from a consumer providing consent and sell that agreement to many different callers and sellers, who themselves resell it to many others. A consumer might have signed up to receive a call from one seller—say a car insurance quote—and then unwittingly clicked a box agreeing to be contacted by hundreds or thousands of companies loosely affiliated with the car insurance company.

On Wednesday, Dec. 13, the government made it much harder for sellers to make calls to numbers obtained from the lead generation industry. In a 4-to-1 vote, the Federal Communications Commission approved regulations that explicitly say that telemarketing robocalls are allowed only if the actual seller, not just the telemarketing company, has gotten written consent from the specific consumer.

“Today we put an end to this loophole,” FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said, at the FCC meeting. “That means consumers get back the power to pick who they want to communicate with and when.”

The vote should help cut down on the number of robocalls made. Each illegal call, according to Congress, can lead to $500 in damages. “It will be much more difficult for sellers to try and escape responsibility,” Saunders says. The Electronic Privacy Information Center projected that the vote would eliminate the “great majority” of unwanted telemarketing calls and texts.

Of course, it could be a little while before anything changes. If companies continue to flaunt the rules, regulators may need consumers to turn them in and file lawsuits to hold those companies accountable. That’s not easy to do, says Saunders—you’d have to answer a robocall, find out who the seller is, and then file a lawsuit under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Many consumers may not have the time or the patience for that.

Still, the industry is preparing for a wave of new lawsuits under the Act. A defense attorney told Reuters that he expected to see lawsuit filings double or even triple going forward.
