Since then, RANA has hosted four major international conventions in New York — in 2003, 2006, 2010, and 2014 — drawing thousands of attendees and uniting the diaspora on one platform.

Its charitable journey began with a rainwater harvesting project in partnership with BITS Pilani, which secured a $200,000 World Bank grant ,a landmark achievement for diaspora-led development.

Today, RANA supports causes such as:

    • The Akshaya Patra Foundation (meals for schoolchildren in India)
    • Apna Ghar (senior care facility)
    • Ekal Vidyalaya (education in tribal communities)
    • Educational scholarships, disaster relief, and health initiatives

During the COVID-19 pandemic, RANA led relief efforts in both the U.S. and India : distributing ventilators, oxygen concentrators, and PPE kits, while youth volunteers in New York delivered meals to frontline healthcare workers.

Jaipur Foot USA: A Global Model with Zero Admin Cost

While RANA does not have a formal partnership with Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) — the world’s largest organization serving the differently-abled — Prem Bhandari, as Founder Chairman of Jaipur Foot USA, has elevated the cause internationally.

    • Jaipur Foot USA is the only organization in the world with zero administrative cost, ensuring every dollar goes directly to helping beneficiaries

    • The United Nations Headquarters in New York
    • Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

As Chief Coordinator for India’s G20 Presidency, Shringla attended a High Tea hosted by Maharaja Gaj Singh of Jodhpur at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Umed Bhawan Palace, organized with the support of Jaipur Foot USA, and attended by dozens of international delegates.

The Minister shares a longstanding association with Jaipur Foot USA. In 2023, he inaugurated two major camps for the differently-abled (Divyangjan) in Hyderabad and Tirupati. These camps were organized in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) of NY, NJ, CT & NE — an organization known for hosting the world’s largest India Day Parade outside India — and Jaipur Foot USA’s parent body, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS).

Speaking at the event, Mr. Bhandari highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s declaration of the “Panch Teerth” — five sacred sites associated with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s life:

    1. Mhow – his birthplace,
    2. Nagpur – Deeksha Bhoomi,
    3. London – where he pursued higher education,
    4. Delhi – where he passed away,
    5. Mumbai – where he was cremated.

To commemorate Dr. Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary in 2016, BMVSS organized two Jaipur Foot camps — one in Mhow and the other at Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur. Mr. Bhandari announced that, under the guidance of BMVSS Founder and Chief Patron Padma Bhushan Shri D.R. Mehta, preparations are underway for upcoming camps in Delhi and Mumbai.

He expressed gratitude for the continued support that BMVSS and Jaipur Foot USA have received from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of External Affairs, under the leadership of  Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Mr. Bhandari also commended India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador P. Harish, for organizing a special event at the UN on June 10 on Jaipur Foot and BMVSS to showcase India’s pioneering work in lower limb disability empowerment. The event will feature the impactful contributions of BMVSS in India and globally. BMVSS Founder and Chief Patron Mr D.R. Mehta and BMVSS President Ambassador Satish Mehta will arrive in New York on June 9 to participate in the event.

Jaipur Foot USA Chairman Prem Bhandari spoke at length about the enormous work being done by Jaipur Foot under the leadership of Mr. D. R. Mehta, Founder and Chief Patron of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), parent body of Jaipur Foot.

Since its inception in 1975, BMVSS has benefited over 2.4 million differently-abled individuals by providing them with Jaipur Foot and other assistive devices. The organization has conducted 114 international camps in 44 countries, including 32 camps under the ‘India for Humanity’ initiative — fully sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mr. Bhandari, who recently visited Guatemala and Trinidad & Tobago, said that Jaipur Foot camps have been approved by the Ministry of External Affairs in :

    • Guatemala – 600 limbs
    • Sudan – 600 limbs
    • Trinidad & Tobago – 800 limbs

All three camps will be conducted later this year.

He further shared that an artificial limb fitment center will soon be opened in Malawi with MEA support, following the announcement made by President Droupadi Murmu last year.

Minister Athawale assured Mr. Bhandari of his full support for the upcoming camps in Delhi and Mumbai, being organized in memory of Dr. Ambedkar. He also praised the transformative work carried out by Jaipur Foot USA’s parent organization BMVSS in India and around the world.

Minister Atawale further said he would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider establishing a memorial for Dr. Ambedkar in New York. In response, Mr. Bhandari stated that his family would be the first to contribute toward this noble cause.

Prem Bhandari presented to the Union Minister a brochure of Jaipur Foot.

“Our Assembly Member is right. She personifies what it is to come to this amazing country and participate in government, not only for the entire state but specifically for the community that supported and encouraged her to run.”

“When she had the vision of making sure that Diwali would be a recognized holiday, they told her it was not possible. We lobbied, we fought, and as she stated, there’s nothing more determined than an Indian woman, and she showed that. And today, we celebrate Diwali as a citywide holiday, and it’s something that we should all acknowledge.”

“But more than that, look what we have done with Dilip Chauhan and others, and how it took 110 mayors before we were able to have an Indian woman to be a deputy mayor, in Deputy Mayor Meera Joshi.”

“You are continuing to see your political strength. You’re continuing to see what you can do. This is one of the most well-educated communities and business leaders. What you did during COVID with your doctors and medical professionals like other immigrant groups, you kept this city going,” said Mayor Adams, surrounded by members of his administration, including NYPD First Deputy Commissioner Tonya Kinsella, and CEO of Gracie Mansion Conservancy, Rhonda Binda.

“ We want to make sure that you no longer live in the shadows of the American dream, that you empower yourself to be self-determinant about what the future holds for this entire city, if not the entire country.”

“And don’t lose sight that running for president is a woman with Indian and African American background. You are moving at a rate that no one thought was imaginable. You can never go back. You can never find yourself back in the shadows of the American dream. You must continue your progress. As you grace us today here at Gracie Mansion, we owe you as much as you owe this great country, we owe each other,” he shared.

“Let’s continue to grow. Let’s continue to strengthen ourselves. And I say, as Diwali is the light that moves out of darkness, let’s displace the hate and the darkness that is pervasive across the globe. It starts here in New York. It starts here on Diwali. It starts here with this great community. I love this community. Keep doing the great things you’re doing,” said Mayor Adams while thanking the glittering, colorful crowd.” He then joined Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar , Dilip Chauhan, and others to light the Diya and then present Citations to community leaders- Vijah Ramjattan, Acharya Leila Gossai, Sarina Jain, and Roni Mazumdar.

She recalled that she had approached the politician to make Diwali a school holiday, and his answer was, “Yes, we will, and we must because anything is possible.”

As such, starting on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, New York will commence the yearly school closing to commemorate Diwali, a religious festival on the Hindu calendar. Assemblywoman Rajkumar called on the gathering to extend a round of applause for Mayor Eric Adams.

“When there was a hate crime at our beloved Tulsi Mandir, Mayor Adams stood with us. And he made sure the NYPD classified it as an anti-Hindu hate crime because he is always standing up for our community.”

“Mayor Adams enjoys and loves his job. He focuses on making lives better here in the City of New York. But on this occasion of Diwali, he also reminds us of Ram, who had to wage an incredible battle to defeat evil.”
“Ram had to put everything in to achieve victory. And on this Diwali, we celebrate Ram’s victory when he returns victorious to Ayodhya,“ said Rajkumar.

“Let us all pledge to be the mayor’s Hanuman. He has always stood with our community. And that is why on this Diwali, the Festival of Lights, we will always stand with our 110th mayor of New York City, Eric Adams,” she said.

The beautiful annual festival, organized by Deputy Commissioner, Mayor’s Office of International Affairs Dilip Chauhan, who served as emcee, South Asian Liaison, Community Affairs Unit Sookranie Dhanpat, and others, showcased a variegated backdrop and enchanting lighting. Energetic dance, accompanied by melodies, entertained the large crowd that partook in vegetarian Indian food, in keeping with the Hindu tradition of vegetarianism.

A prominent highlight of the evening was the participation of the World Vegan Vision, established by H.K./ Malti Shah and facilitated by Vice Chairman Satish Karnidkar. They generously provided delicious plant-based vegan mithai (sweets) and savory treats, aligning perfectly with the event’s theme of promoting environmental sustainability and plant-based lifestyles.

  • New York City Mayor Proclaimed April 6 Thomas Abraham Day on the occasion of dedication of Dr. Thomas Abraham Library

NEW YORK (TIP) : Dr. Thomas Abraham, Chairman of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) was honored for his contribution of 50 years of service to the Indian Diaspora community and India by dedication of Dr. Thomas Abraham Library at the Indian American Kerala Cultural and Civic Center in Elmont, New York. New York City Mayor Eric Adams proclaimed April 6th as Dr. Thomas Abraham Day in honor of the new library opening.
Indian Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan inaugurated the library at a festive event at the Center, attended by cross section of the community on April 6. Apart from books, the library also contains historical documents depicting the growth of the Indian American community and history of Indian Diaspora community, especially from the collections of Dr. Abraham.
Dr. Abraham, whose community work spans a half century, is noted for founding several organizations which have become big institutions of the Indian American community and the global Indian Diaspora community. Dr. Abraham has been serving the NRI/PIO community for the last 51 years. He served as the founder president of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) of New York in the 1970s which organizes the largest India Day Parade outside India and the National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA) in the 1980s. Dr. Abraham currently serves as the Chairman of Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) which he founded in 1989 and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Indian American Kerala Center in New York and was a Co-Founder of the Center. Dr. Abraham also served as the Co-Chairman of the fund-raising campaign to institute a chair for Indian studies at Columbia University. Two other groups initiated by Dr. Abraham are National Indian American Association for Senior Citizens (NIAASC) and South Asian Council for Social Services (SACSS).
Library Committee Member Abraham Thomas started the program with a brief welcome and then introducing Kerala Center Vice President Daisy Stephen, who served as the MC. The program was started with rendering American and Indian National Anthems by Ms. Lauren Vattakalam. Kerala Center President Alex Estappan in his welcome speech noted that Dr. Abraham was the founder of most of the major Indian community organizations in the New York area including FIA New York, NFIA and GOPIO. These organizations have empowered the Indian community over the last 50 years.

Kerala Center Board Chairman Nephrologist Dr. Madhu Bhaskaran introduced the Consul General and said, “It is a proud movement for the Kerala Center to have this library at it premises.”
Addressing a packed audience, Consul General Pradhan said, “I don’t see this as the inauguration of a library, but as a celebration of the work and achievements of Dr. Abraham and his contributions to the society.”
Pradhan said that he was familiar with organizations like GOPIO (Global Organization of People of Indian Origin) which Abraham founded. When he joined the New York Consulate, he met Dr. Abraham on the first day and got a clear picture of the Indian American community from him.
‘The gradual growth and changes in the Indian society can be seen through his life. This growth is exciting. People mentioned Dr. Abraham’s name when he visited Ohio, a state within the jurisdiction of the consulate. It means his work isn’t limited to the New York tristate area. It is amazing how he shaped the brand India over half a century.” Said Pradhan.
The Indian community is growing steadily here. We pay a high price for that. Now at least one lakh students from India come to study here every year. The community has now become a force to reckon with.
When he was ambassador to Tanzania, he tried to set up a branch of IIT there. The government of Tanzania came forward to set it up. The president of that country knew about the benefits achieved by India through IITs and wanted to have the same in his country. This was achieved during his term in Tanzania.
Pradhan asked the diaspora to pay attention to the Indian American community here as well, along with the services done for India. The community should come forward to help the Indian students coming here. That is very much needed.
He also praised the works of the Kerala Center. He suggested adding digital facilities at the library and the Consulate is willing to contribute to the same.
New York City Deputy Commissioner for International Affairs Dilip Chauhan presented a proclamation from New York City Mayor Eric Adams declaring April 6th as Dr. Thomas Abraham Day in honor of the new library opening. In his proclamation, Mayor Adams applauded Dr. Abraham for his continued effort to support and uplift people of Indian origin descent in New York and beyond.
New York State Senator Kevin Thomas, who was another honored guest, revealed at the event that his field of activity is going to change soon. He had announced that he would contest for Congress, but later called it off. He said he is also no longer running for the New York State Senate. There were earlier indications that he would get another important appointment. He did not reveal what that would be.
Senator Thomas said more youth should come forward to politics. He also presented New York Senate’s Proclamation honoring Thomas Abraham.
Mr. Bruce A. Blakeman, Executive of Nassau County, where the library is located, issued a citation honoring Dr. Abraham for his half a century of dedicated service to the Indian American community. The award was presented by former Nassau County Commissioner Varinder Bhalla and former Deputy Commissioner Ratna Bhalla. Both praised contributions of Dr. Abraham.

The 33rd India Day Parade in New York City on Sunday, August 18 drew thousands to Midtown Manhattan. The entire area from 38th Street to 26th Street on Madison Avenue was submerged with Indian Americans and the Indian national tricolor flags atop floats and in the hands of the people marching in or just watching the parade from both sides of the Avenue. The number at the Parade, according to liberal estimates, was close to a hundred thousand while many claimed that it was anywhere between 50,000 to 70,000. Numbers apart, the enthusiasm of the people was the most noticeable aspect of the parade.

Indian social activist Anna Hazare and Bollywood star Vidya Balan led the parade in which a number of celebrities participated. They included former Chief of Army Staff General (Retd.) V.K. Singh who was the chief Guest, and Guests of Honor actor Sarath Kumar and Radikaa Sarath Kumar.

The parade drew elected officials and political candidates, including New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, City Comptroller John Liu, Assemblyman David Weprin, Reshma Saujani, a Democratic candidate for public advocate and Joe Lhota, a Republican mayoral candidate. “I think our voice is getting more politically powerful,” said Ms Saujani, who would be New York City’s first Indian- American politician, if elected. “It’s important for the community to be out recognizing that.” “New York City’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths,” said Mr. Lhota. “What we’re really doing here is celebrating coming to America.” said he.

Bollywood star Vidya Balan, who was the Grand Marshal, drew huge crowds as people on both sides of the Madison Avenue cheered her. Consul General of India in New York Dnyaneshwar Mulay was seen on the same float as Vidya. Gen V K Singh, former Chief of Indian Army Staff was perched on another float and his colleague in crusade against corruption, Anna Hazare rode in a separate car. The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Winston Baldwin Spencer who rode in a Lamborghini car wore a kurta and a pyjama and instantly connected with the Indian-Americans with his namaste. South Indian actors – R Sarath Kumar, Radikaa Sarath Kumar and Jaishree Chandrasekhar – traveled in the American Tamil Sangam float that had a huge banner of Statue of Liberty draped in a sari.

There were more than 40 floats representing institutions such as State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Yes Bank, Indus American Bank, India Tourism, Air India, MoneyGram, and New York Life. Also represented were some organizations, like the Society of Indian American Engineers and Architects (SIAEA).

    img_c_4

Some religious, social and political organizations too had their floats. And then there were some who did not have floats but marched as distinct groups in the parade. One such group was the Agrawal Samaj. Times Now that beamed the program live had an independent float. The parade over, the crowd thronged the cultural programs arena and the booth area where a replica of Red Fort was built in 80 feet x 10 feet.

    Sidelights & Impressions:

    1. Anna Hazare was escorted to the parade by Sudhir Vaishnav, Executive Vice President of FIA and some other FIA officials. Security guards surrounded him and did not let anyone come near him. Anna walked a little, acknowledged the greetings of the by standers and then got in to a car.

    2. General (Retd.) V.K. Singh was spotted on the Air India float. He was accompanied by his wife. He did not seem to have any security protection. He shook hands with me and was pleased to receive a copy of The Indian Panorama.

    3. Christine Quinn, the New York City Council Speaker was amongst the first few to arrive. She appeared as cheerful as she always is and met people warmly. I handed her a copy of The Indian Panorama which she gladly took and handed it over to one of her aides.

    4. Reshma Saujani who is a hopeful for the office of Public Advocate was seen going round and meeting people. I said to her in a lighter vein that I would like to see her win and then be known as Millionjani. A compliment she well received. 4. Joe Lhota, a former MTA Chairman, and now a Republican hopeful for Mayor of New York wondered why there should be such disorganization. In the first place, parade was not started on time. Secondly, nobody seemed to be taking charge of the affairs at the starting point. It was free for all.

    5. A gentleman wearing a sash that said Committee member came and asked me to move away as he did nit recognize me as a member of media since I did not have the sash that said media. I politely told him I did not want to be recognized by FIA. I had better recognition from State Department and that it was a public parade not a private function.

    6. A Trustee and Vice Chairman of FIA, Yash Paul Soi lost his cool when I was presenting a copy of The Indian Panorama to Christine Quinn. He snatched the newspaper from my hands and threw it on the ground prompting me to tell him he had no right to do so. A shocked Christine Quinn backed a step or two fearing a quarrel. However, Soi kept quiet, probably realizing he had done wrong. Meanwhile, Steven C Feder, Coordinator from Speaker Christine Quinn’s office who was accompanying Quinn stepped forward to ask me to “calm down”. In fact, my good friend Dilip Chauhan wanted to take a photograph of Christine receiving a copy of The Indian Panorama. May be, Soi did not want her to get the newspaper because it carried an article critical of FIA. Soi may face a law suit for obstructing a journalist from performing his duty.

    7. Grand Marshal Vidya Balan packed brevity in her address. All she said did was raise slogans of Jai Hind, Bharat Mata Ki Jai, and praised New York.

    8. Ambassador Dnyaneshwar Mulay, while greeting the Indian American community on the occasion of celebration of the 66th anniversary of India’s Independence, urged them to work for better relations between the US and India. He eulogized the community for its great contribution to the US and India.

    9. Air India Regional Director Riwo Norbhu found himself being treated by Air India staff to his birthday party. He said to me he did not know anything about it until a cake was brought to be cut by him. So, we know now Riwo’s birthday falls on August 18.

    10. The parade provided business houses, organizations and institutions to make their appearances as families. Families of the staff of Air India, State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, and India Tourism were seen on the floats. So it was with Society of Indian American Engineers and Architects (SIAEA).
