BUCHAREST (TIP): The Embassy of India in Bucharest, in collaboration with members of the Indian diaspora and with the support of sponsors Angad Store SRL, Dimar Academy and Western Union, organised Holi Utsav 2026 on 8th March 2026 for members of the Indian community, Friends of India, representatives of the Government of Romania and members of the Romanian business and cultural community.
The event was organised with the objective of promoting the rich cultural heritage and traditions of India, particularly those of the northern states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. As Bihar Diwas, commemorating the formation of the State of Bihar, is observed in the month of March, Bihar was highlighted as the focus State during the celebrations, showcasing its vibrant cultural traditions, music and heritage.
Addressing the gathering, H.E. Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, Ambassador of India to Romania and Moldova, highlighted the significance of the festival of Holi as a celebration of joy, harmony and the triumph of good over evil. He noted that festivals such as Holi provide a meaningful platform to bring together the Indian community and Romanian friends, while also reflecting the cultural affinities and shared values that connect India and Romania. Ambassador also conveyed his Happy Women’s Day on this occasion.
The Ambassador also conveyed his warm greetings on the occasion of International Women’s Day, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of women in society and their vital role in strengthening families, communities and nations. The Ambassador noted that celebrating Women’s Day alongside the festival of Holi symbolises harmony, respect and the shared commitment to building a more inclusive and progressive society.
Holi is one of India’s most vibrant and widely celebrated festivals, symbolising the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. In states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the festival is marked by distinctive cultural traditions including folk music such as Phag and Hori, traditional dances and community celebrations, which reflect India’s rich and composite cultural ethos. Over time, Holi has also become an important cultural celebration for the Indian diaspora worldwide, serving as a means of preserving and promoting Indian traditions and cultural values abroad. The event highlighted these traditions through curated cultural elements, music and thematic presentations, offering guests an authentic glimpse of India’s diverse cultural heritage.
The celebration witnessed the participation of over 500 members of the Indian diaspora and Friends of India, including representatives from Romanian government institutions, the diplomatic corps, cultural organisations, academia, the business community and the media. The event served as an important platform to strengthen engagement
with the Indian diaspora in Romania and to further promote people-to-people ties between India and Romania.
In addition to the Holi celebrations, the event also marked Bihar Day, with a special showcase of ODOP (One District One Product) items, highlighting India’s rich artisanal traditions and craftsmanship, with a particular focus on products from Bihar. The initiative provided participants an opportunity to learn more about India’s regional diversity, cultural heritage and traditional industries.
Given the large number of participants, the festivities were organised both outdoors and indoors. The traditional Holi celebrations with colours took place in an open setting, allowing participants to enjoy the festive atmosphere. Meanwhile, presentations related to Bihar Day, cultural highlights and the display of ODOP products were conducted indoors with appropriate audio-visual arrangements, ensuring an engaging and informative experience for the attendees.
The event reflected the growing cultural engagement between India and Romania, while celebrating the spirit of diversity, friendship and togetherness that defines the festival of Holi. It also reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to strengthening cultural diplomacy and fostering closer connections between the peoples of the two countries.
