Three Indian-American luminaries among Padma Award honorees
Three distinguished Indian-Americans have been named among the recipients of India’s prestigious Padma Awards 2026, the Government of India announced on the eve of Republic Day. The honours recognize outstanding contributions in medicine and sports, and will be conferred by the President of India at a ceremonial function later this year.
Padma Bhushan for Dr. Nori Dattatreyudu
Dr. Dattatreyudu Nori, a renowned radiation oncologist based in the United States, has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, for his lifelong service to medicine.
Born in Mantada village in Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Nori trained at Kurnool Medical College and Osmania Medical College before moving to the United States, where he built a distinguished career in cancer care. He is widely recognized as a leader in brachytherapy — a targeted form of radiation therapy — and has pioneered techniques that have improved treatment outcomes for many cancer patients. Beyond clinical innovation, Dr. Nori has advised government and health organizations on cancer prevention and care strategies. He was previously awarded the Padma Shri in 2015 for his contributions to medicine.
Dr Nori’s contributions have been widely acknowledged at both national and international levels. In 2014, he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honour, one of the highest civilian awards in the United States. He was also conferred the Padma Shri in 2015 for his services to medicine. In addition, he has been named among the top doctors in America by his peers, based on evaluations by tens of thousands of oncologists, particularly for his work in treating cancers in women.
Padma Bhushan for Vijay Amritraj
Vijay Amritraj, one of India’s most celebrated tennis players, has also been honoured with the Padma Bhushan.
Born in Madras (now Chennai) in 1953, Amritraj became a global ambassador for Indian sport during his professional tennis career. He reached the quarterfinals at both Wimbledon and the US Open, won numerous titles, and captained India’s Davis Cup team. After retiring from competition, he became a respected sports commentator and broadcaster. Amritraj has also worked in film and served as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, advocating for health and social causes. He was earlier honoured with the Padma Shri in 1983 and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2024.
Padma Shri for Dr. Prateek Sharma
Dr. Prateek Sharma has been named a Padma Shri recipient for his contributions to medicine.
Dr. Sharma, a leading Indian-American gastroenterologist, is internationally recognized for his work in diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal diseases and cancers. His efforts include advancing imaging and endoscopic techniques that help detect conditions such as Barrett’s esophagus and early-stage gastrointestinal cancer, improving patient outcomes. Dr. Sharma’s leadership in medical research and his role in professional healthcare organisations have brought him wide recognition in the field.
The Padma Awards — comprising the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri — are among the highest civilian honours in India. They are announced annually on Republic Day and celebrate distinguished service across medicine, arts, sports, science, public affairs, and other fields. In 2026, a total of 131 awardees were selected. -

EXPERIENCE THE INGENUITY OF BEETHOVEN’S FIFTH & SIXTH SYMPHONY MASTERWORKS
-
By Mabel Pais
“What the New Jersey Symphony has established, bringing music to the Garden State in schools and in six different cities, is a sincere accomplishment. And it’s never been better.” – nj.com
Ludwig van BEETHOVEN’s iconic Fifth Symphony will be performed on February 26, 27 and March 1, 2026 and his equally popular Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral” will have performances on March 27, 28, and 29, 2026 at locations in New Jersey (see details below).
Beethoven composed these symphonies in tandem, and both premiered at the same concert in 1808. An enduring example of the composer’s ingenuity and range of musical styles: the Fifth is legendary for its drama, while the Sixth presents a softer side of his music, an ode to life in the countryside.
Markus Stenz returns to take the podium for Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony paired with Richard Wagner’s Prelude to Act I of ‘Lohengrin.’ Audiences will also hear Kevin Puts’ GRAMMY Award-winning concerto, ‘Contact,’ composed for the genre-defying string trio, Time For Three.

The Storm Theatre Company
The Storm Theatre Company’s 1997 inaugural production of ‘Murder in the Cathedral’ by T.S. Eliot was staged on the altar of the Church of the Holy Cross on 42nd Street in New York City for virtually no money. Since that rather modest beginning, ‘The Storm’ has produced over 60 plays of astonishing scope and audacious breadth.
The name “Storm” was chosen to represent a journey through catharsis and regeneration. Inspired by Elizabethan Theatres such as Shakespeare’s ‘The Globe’ and ‘The Rose,’ The Storm Theatre Company proved an apt name for its mission – to reawaken audiences to the awe-inspiring truths of our shared humanity: its beauty and potential.
Such aspirations have led The Storm Theatre Company to produce quite a varied selection of plays over the last quarter century. Our second show, Dion Boucicault’s ‘The Shaughraun,’ was the first production in New York City in over 100 years, and subsequently led to a resurgence of this neglected nineteenth century theater genius’s work. The Storm rediscovered other forgotten gems such as Edward Bulwar Lytton’s ‘Money’ (1840); Thomas Dekker’s ‘The Shoemaker’s Holiday’ (1599); Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’ ‘The House of Desires’ (1683); and George Lillo’s ‘The London Merchant’ (1731), all produced to great critical success.
In addition, The Storm Theatre Company produced three plays by the French playwright, Paul Claudel. While Claudel is one of France’s most revered, his work is rarely staged in the United States. Storm Theatre produced the epic work ‘The Satin Slipper’ as well as the mysterious and intriguing ‘Noon Divide’; the haunting play, ‘The Tidings Brought to Mary,’ and had three successful Storm Theatre productions.
In 2007, The Storm Theatre Company produced a festival of the work of Polish playwright and actor Karol Wojtyła, including ‘Our God’s Brother,’ ‘The Jeweler’s Shop,’ ‘Jeremiah,’ and ‘Job’. Wojtyła seemed destined to become a major theatrical force but instead went on to become canonized Pope John Paul II.
In its 24th season, The Storm Theatre Company mission has inspired productions of an unusual assortment of plays including ‘Marius’ by Marcel Pagnol (part of his Marseilles trilogy); Terrence Rattigan’s ‘Ross’ (about Lawrence of Arabia); a rare NYC revival of Saroyan’s ‘The Time of Your Life;’ a staged version of Graham Greene’s novel ‘The Power and The Glory;’ ‘Le Cid’ by Pierre Corneille in a new verse translation by Richard Wilbur; ‘Gillette’ by William Hauptman; Stewart Parker’s, ‘Spokesong;’ Jim Nolan’s ‘The Salvage Shop;’ Stavrogin’s ‘Confession’ by John Regis (adapted from Dostoevsky’s ‘The Demons’); and much more. With ‘Antigone,’ The Storm Theatre Company returned to Jean Anouilh having produced his ‘Eurydice’ in May/June of 2000. Interspersed throughout the years, The Storm Theatre Company has delighted audiences with productions of ‘As You Like It,’ ‘The Tempest,’ ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ featuring of all things, a former Miss America and an NFL Hall of Famer.
Most recently The Storm Theatre Company has produced original productions of new plays: ‘The Believers’ by Robert Carroll, ‘Deconstruction’ and ‘The Fight’ by Jonathan Leaf; The New York premiere ‘Sister Calling My Name’ by Buzz McLaughlin and the North American premiere of ‘Collaborators’ by John Hodge. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO)
As well as a busy schedule of national and international performances, the Orchestra enjoys an annual season of concerts in London’s Royal Albert Hall (where the RPO is Associate Orchestra), the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall and Cadogan Hall, where it recently celebrated its 20th Season as Resident Orchestra. The RPO was the first UK orchestra to launch its own record label achieving well over 50 million streams of its recorded music each year. The RPO is recognized as one of the world’s most open-minded, forward-thinking and accessible symphony orchestras. Learn more at https://rpo.co.uk.
Patron: HM King Charles III
President: Aline Foriel-Destezet
Music Director: Vasily Petrenko
Artist Laureate: Sir John Rutter CBE
Associate Conductor: Emilia Hoving
Composer-in-Association: Joe Hisaishi
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), with Music Director Vasily Petrenko, is on a mission to bring the thrill of live orchestral music to the widest possible audience. The RPO’s musicians believe that music can – and should – be a part of everyone’s life, and they aim to deliver on that belief through every note. Based in London and performing around 200 concerts per year worldwide, the RPO brings the same energy, commitment and excellence to everything it plays, be that the great symphonic repertoire, collaborations with pop stars, or TV, video game and movie soundtracks. Proud of its rich heritage yet always evolving, the RPO is regarded as the world’s most versatile symphony orchestra, reaching a live and online audience of more than 70 million people each year.
Innovation is in the RPO’s genes. Sir Thomas Beecham, who founded the RPO in 1946, was a force of musical nature: an entrepreneur, a wit and a conductor of great integrity, and he believed that great music-making belonged to everyone and that Britain needed an orchestra that was as adaptable as it was brilliant. This vision has remained integral to the RPO’s approach. The RPO was one of the first orchestras to set up a community and education programme, RPO Resound, and the first orchestra to create its own record label, as well as the first to travel to America post-COVID-19.
Throughout its history, the RPO has performed with the world’s most inspiring musicians, including André Previn, Yehudi Menuhin, Yuri Temirkanov and Vladimir Ashkenazy, as well as icons such as Kylie Minogue, Shirley Bassey, Deep Purple, Def Leppard and Rod Stewart. And not just musicians, either. From British movie classics such as ‘The Red Shoes’ and ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ to the anthem for the UEFA Champions League, the RPO has been part of the soundtrack to millions of lives, sometimes without people knowing it. The Orchestra has continued to embrace advances in digital technology and attracts a growing global audience for its streamed performances, artist interviews, ‘behind-the-scenes’ insights and other digital output. Each year, the RPO’s recorded music is streamed over 50 million times, has 17 million views on YouTube, and the Orchestra welcomes around 200,000 audience members to its live performances.
But live performance has always been at the heart of what the RPO does, and through its thriving artistic partnership with Vasily Petrenko, the RPO has reaffirmed its status as one of the world’s most respected and in-demand orchestras. In London, that means flagship concert series at Cadogan Hall (where the RPO’s residency is 21 years young this season), the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, and the iconic Royal Albert Hall, where the RPO is proud to be an Associate Orchestra. The Orchestra is also thrilled to be resident in four areas of the UK, performing at The Hawth in Crawley, Hull City Hall, Northampton’s Royal & Derngate and The Hexagon in Reading.
Recent concert highlights have included performances of all three of Mahler’s epic choral symphonies at the Royal Albert Hall, appearances at the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival, and concerts within leading European festivals, such as the George Enescu, Lucerne, Merano and Grafenegg festivals. Artistic partners have included Joe Hisaishi (RPO Composer-in-Association), Anne-Sophie Mutter, Yunchan Lim, Julia Fischer, Eric Lu, Maxim Vengerov, Roderick Williams OBE and the RPO’s 2024–25 Cadogan Hall Artist-in-Residence Johan Dalene, among many others. During the 2025–26 Season, the Orchestra looks forward to welcoming Ray Chen, Midori, Benjamin Grosvenor, Boris Giltburg, Artist Laureate Sir John Rutter, Associate Conductor Emilia Hoving and Cadogan Hall Conductor-in-Residence Kevin John Edusei. And around the world, the RPO will be flying the flag for the best of British music-making, with tours to Japan and South Korea, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the USA.
The RPO remains true to its pioneering, accessible roots. Now in its fourth decade, the RPO Resound community and education programme continues to thrive as one of the UK’s – and the world’s – most innovative and respected initiatives of its kind. And in 2025, the RPO moved its headquarters to Wembley Park in the London Borough of Brent – the realisation of a long-held ambition to become part of the everyday life of a diverse community and audience that the Orchestra is seeking to serve.
Passionate, versatile and uncompromising in its pursuit of musical excellence, and with the patronage of His Majesty King Charles III and the artistic leadership of Vasily Petrenko, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra continues to build on an enviable heritage to scale new heights. The Orchestra looks to the future with a determination to explore, to share and to reaffirm its reputation as an orchestra with a difference: open-minded, forward-thinking and accessible to all. Sir Thomas Beecham would have approved.

WNYC WITH THE APOLLO CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY…..
MLK26: THE PAN-AFRICANIST – RESTITUTION & RECONCILIATION IN A GLOBAL STATE OF EMERGENCY
-
By Mabel Pais
WNYC celebrates the 20th Anniversary of its annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by partnering again with The Apollo for MLK26: The Pan-Africanist — Restitution & Reconciliation in a Global State of Emergency. Held for the first time at The Apollo’s new stages at the Victoria Theater, the event will take place on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at 2pm. It will be recorded and broadcast on WNYC and public radio stations across the country on Monday, January 19 (see local listings).
Anchored in the historic moment of Dr. King’s 1957 journey to Ghana, the program traces King’s vision and commitment to global liberation to the modern-day call for justice.Through conversation, performance, and reflection, this year’s gathering connects the struggle against colonialism and segregation to today’s fights for equity, freedom, and dignity across the African Diaspora. Together, let’s examine restitution and reconciliation not as lofty ideals, but as urgent imperatives, linking Accra to Atlanta, the global past to our shared present.
“For 20 years, WNYC’s Annual MLK event has brought together scholars, journalists, activists, and artists to honor Dr. King – not as a symbol of our historic past, but as a multi-dimensional leader whose legacy continues to speak loudly and urgently to our time,” said LaFontaine Oliver, President & CEO and Executive Chair of New York Public Radio. “We’re proud to do this work in partnership with The Apollo and March On!, and to make this programming available to audiences in New York and worldwide.”
“Dr. King called on us to listen deeply, act collectively, and remain accountable to one another,” said Michelle Ebanks, President & CEO of The Apollo. “Together with WNYC and March On!, we are honored to create space for reflection and dialogue that invites our communities to engage with Dr. King’s legacy — one that continues to shape our present and future.”
“Dr. King understood that the fight for justice was never confined by borders,” said Kim Callinan, Executive Director of March On!. “We’re proud to partner with WNYC and The Apollo to carry that global vision forward — through art, dialogue, and collective reckoning.”
The conversation will be hosted by WNYC’s Michael Hill, Brian Lehrer, and Janae Pierre, along with WQXR’s Terrance McKnight.
Guests include:
- Robert Vinson, Director & Chair of the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American & African Studies at the University of Virginia and author, ‘King in Africa’
- Marc Morial, President, National Urban League
- Sandra Babu-Boateng, Diasporic Digital Media Executive
- Brandon Terry, John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard University and the co-director of the Institute on Policing, Incarceration, and Public Safety at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research; author of ‘Shattered Dreams,’ ‘Infinite Hope’ (The NYT’s 100 Notable Books of 2025)
LaFontaine E. Oliver, President & CEO and Executive Chair, New York Public Radio; Michelle Ebanks, President and CEO of The Apollo; and Isisara Bey, Artistic Director of March On! will give opening remarks.
Due to capacity constraints at the venue, seating is extremely limited. MLK26: The Pan-Africanist — Restitution & Reconciliation in a Global State of Emergency will be recorded for broadcast on WNYC on Monday, January 19 at 3pm & 8pm on WNYC 93.9 FM, AM 820, and wnyc.org, as well as on public radio stations across the country and on WNYC and The Apollo’s YouTube channels. NJPAC CONTINUES TO ‘STAND IN SOLIDARITY’ WITH THE COMMUNITY IN 2026
-
By Mabel Pais
The topic of affordable housing is back in 2026 by popular demand from participants in last year’s ‘Standing in Solidarity’ season.
In 2024, new legislation was introduced that requires every town in New Jersey to build its fair share of low-income housing. But what does this mean for families — will they find a warm welcome, and viable housing options, in every municipality? Or might local politics in some towns potentially stymie the building of affordable homes?
The evening includes a screening of the PSEG Social Impact film ‘City Rising: Gentrification and Displacement,’ a PBS documentary series exploring the impact of discriminatory laws on the country’s housing crisis.

FILMS OF NOTE
-
By Mabel Pais
COVER UP
“Brilliant and damning… In refracting more than 50 years of crime and conspiracy through the prism of Hersh’s career as an investigative reporter, COVER-UP is also the deepest and most damning film that Poitras has ever made about truth in America — and the power to control it… A rare and unmistakably urgent documentary.” – David Ehrlich, IndieWire
“Riveting… Grips the attention from the opening frames… Explores the extraordinary career of Hersh, who is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest investigative journalists in American history (except perhaps by those whose misdeeds he has exposed)…. The film includes audio of President Nixon snarling about Hersh in conversation with his national security advisor, Henry Kissinger. In one of the White House tapes, Nixon grouses, ‘The son of a bitch is a son of a bitch. But he’s usually right, isn’t he?’”
– Matthew Carey, Deadline
“Enthralling… Captures how uncovering corruption is always a mountain to climb.” – Owen Gleiberman, Variety
DIRS: Laura Poitras & Mark Obenhaus; Prod: Yoni Golijov, Olivia Streisand, Laura Poitras & Mark Obenhaus; 2025; USA; Doc Feature; Rated: R; 1h 57m;

Russian school teacher. (Credit: docnyc.net) Pulitzer-winning investigative reporter Seymour M. Hersh was first to uncover the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War, multiple illegal CIA covert operations
(including domestic spying and conducting experiments on Americans), and the U.S. Army torturing prisoners at Abu Ghraib in Iraq.
Oscar®-winning filmmaker Poitras (CITIZEN FOUR) and Emmy®-winning filmmaker Obenhaus trace the history of Hersh’s courageous, iconoclastic reporting (much of which was initially met with skepticism by mainstream outlets), his deep reservoir of sources inside government agencies, and his run-ins with politicians and editors.
At a time when freedom of the press is increasingly in jeopardy and self-censorship by major media is prevalent, COVER-UP is a reminder of the critical role hard-hitting investigative reporting plays in a democracy.
COVER-UP premiered at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, and was also screened at Telluride, Toronto, New York and London Film Festivals.
Screening Platform: A Netflix release.

SEEDS
Shortlisted for the 2026 Academy Award® for Documentary Feature Film
WINNER – U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize, 2025 Sundance Film Festival
NOMINEE – Truer Than Fiction Award, 2026 Film Independent Spirit Awards“Nine years in the making, [SEEDS is] as patient and persevering as the Black farmers it documents. A languid, loving portrait of Black farmers in the South, SEEDS is a mixture of celebration and lament. Family farming has been endangered, but for African American farmers, the land—holding onto it, cultivating it—is even more precarious and precious.” – Lisa Kennedy, Variety
“Quietly stunning… Brittany Shyne constructs an empathetic portrait of Black agrarian life while also revealing threats to its survival. Not a journalistic investigation but a poetic contemplation that recalls Garrett Bradley’s TIME and RaMell Ross’ HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING. In the early 20th century, Black farmers owned 16 millions acres of land; today that number has shrunk to roughly a million. With SEEDS, Shyne helps spotlights the farmer, the mature and the budding, fighting to protect what remains.” – Lovia Gyarkye, The Hollywood Reporter
DIR: Brittany Shyne; Exec Prod: Maida Lynn, Tessa Thompson; Prod: Danielle Varga, Sabrina Schmidt Gordon, Brittany Shyne; USA; 2025; 2h 5m;
Interweaving the stories of three Black generational farmers to create a collective and intimate portrait of farming today, SEEDS is a moving and powerful exploration of their lives, joys and struggles as well as the fragility of legacy and owning land. With remarkable intimacy, the film documents their everyday lives – cotton harvesting, chasing cows, dealing with broken machinery and financial precarities. The camera relishes simple moments – conversations through car windows, candy from grandma’s purse as it captures moments of warmth, joy and fulfillment – turning them into striking vignettes that honor the families’ connection to the land and each other.
But the sobering reality underscores the urgency of their story. Black farmers owned 16 million acres of land in 1910 but today, that number has dwindled to a fraction. The farmers in the community struggle to access funding that white farmers nearby seem to secure with ease. Through these inter-generational stories, we see the cycles of inequity and embedded racism that persist to this present day, and the signs of hope and renewal with younger generations of farmers. SEEDS emphasizes how human beings are innately tied to our foundational roots, roots which carry our ancestral memories – somber, bitter, and sweet.

MR. NOBODY AGAINST PUTIN
“An unseen human angle on an ongoing conflict.” – Variety
“A horrifying blueprint for authoritarianism.” – Reel News Daily
“This is one of the few documentaries that genuinely deserves adjectives like ‘brave’ and ‘daring’ – Cinema Daily US
DIR: David Borenstein and Pavel (Pasha) Talankin; Prod: Helle Faber; Exec Prods: Radovan Sibrt & Alzbeta Karaskova; Russian; 1h 30m
In a remote Russian mining town, a primary school teacher covertly documents the state’s transformation of classrooms into recruitment grounds for war. Tasked with filming “patriotic education” sessions, he turns the lens on the indoctrination of youth, capturing moments of coerced loyalty and silent dissent. This intimate documentary offers a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the erosion of truth and the resilience of those who dare to resist, even at great personal cost.

HOOPS, HOPES AND DREAMS
DIR: Glenn Kaino; Rating: PG; 20m
‘Hoops, Hopes & Dreams’ is a short documentary that explores how basketball has been a tool for connection, organizing, and community participation.
Directed by artist and filmmaker Glenn Kaino, the documentary reveals a lesser-known aspect of the Civil Rights Movement, showing how Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists used basketball to reach young people, build trust, and bring communities together. This influence was seen in President Barack Obama’s campaign, where basketball once again became a bridge linking generations, cultures, and coalitions through shared experience.
Blending archival footage, animation, and interviews, the film invites viewers to reflect on the importance of sports as a space for leadership, conversation, and civic engagement. Featured in the film are Ambassador Andrew Young, NBA legend Jerry West, journalist Jemele Hill, Michael Strautmanis from The Obama Foundation, and Reginald L. Love, a former Duke basketball player and aide to President Obama.

2026 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL PAYS TRIBUTE TO FOUNDER ROBERT REDFORD AND HONORS THREE; AMONG THEM: GEETA GANDBHIR
-
By Mabel Pais
Sundance Film Festival (festival.sundance.org) at its 2026 annual fundraiser – CELEBRATING SUNDANCE INSTITUTE: A TRIBUTE TO FOUNDER ROBERT REDFORD will also honor three individuals for their work. This will take place on Friday, January 23, 2026, at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley in Utah.
During the evening, CHLOE ZHAO will receive the annual Trailblazer Award, NIA DACOSTA will be presented with the annual Vanguard Award for Fiction, and GEETA GANDBHIR will receive the annual Vanguard Award Presented for Nonfiction. Additional special guest participants include Amy Redford, Ava DuVernay, Ethan Hawke, David Lowery, Tessa Thompson, and more. The Film Festival (sundance.org) will be held from January 22–February 1, 2026, in person in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, with the at-home program available online from January 29–February 1, 2026, for audiences across the country.
The evening will be a meaningful tribute to Sundance Institute’s Founder, Robert Redford — his legacy, vision, and enduring mission to support independent storytellers, and the inaugural Robert Redford Luminary Award will be presented to GYULA GAZDAG and ED HARRIS. The annual event enables the nonprofit to raise funds to support artists year-round through labs, intensives, grants, fellowships, a continuum of support, and public programming.
Recognizing an artist’s unwavering dedication and notable contributions to the field of independent film, the Sundance Institute Trailblazer Award will be presented to Academy Award–winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao. Previous honorees include Christopher Nolan and James Mangold.
Chloé Zhao is a Beijing-born writer, director, editor, and producer. Her debut feature, ‘Songs My Brothers Taught Me’ (2015), was supported by the 2012 Sundance Institute Directors and Screenwriters Labs and later premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Zhao’s other films include ‘The Rider’ (2017), ‘Eternals’ (2021), and ‘Nomadland’ (2020), which won three Oscars. Most recently, she directed, co-wrote, and co-edited Focus Features’ ‘Hamnet’ (2025), from the bestselling novel of the same name. Led by her masterful creative vision and collaborative storytelling, the film has earned nine audience awards, as well as Golden Globe and Critics Choice Association nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. She launched the production company ‘Book of Shadows’ in 2023 and ‘Kodansha Studios’ in 2025.
“Sundance Institute was where my journey as a filmmaker truly began, so to be honored with the Trailblazer Award by this community feels like coming home,” said Chloé Zhao. “I’m deeply grateful for the support, friendship, and inspiration I’ve found here over the years, and I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of this empathetic and fearless community of storytellers.”
The annual Vanguard Awards honor emerging artists whose work highlights the art of storytelling and creative independence in both fiction and nonfiction. The Vanguard Award for Fiction will be presented to Nia DaCosta, director of ‘Hedda’ (2025), and the Vanguard Award for Nonfiction will go to ‘Geeta Gandbhir,’ director of ‘The Perfect Neighbor’ (2025). Previous honorees include Sean Wang, Julian Brave NoiseCat, Emily Kassie, Celine Song, Maite Alberdi, Ryan Coogler, W. Kamau Bell, Nikyatu Jusu, Siân Heder, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Radha Blank, Lulu Wang, Boots Riley, Dee Rees, Marielle Heller, Damien Chazelle, Benh Zeitlin, and many more.
Nia DaCosta wrote, directed, and produced Hedda, which was released this fall. Previously, DaCosta directed and co-wrote ‘The Marvels’ (2023), ‘Candyman’ (2021), and ‘Little Woods’ (2018), her debut feature supported by the 2015 Sundance Institute Directors and Screenwriters Labs. Her next film, ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,’ will be released in theaters on January 16, 2026.
“It is such an honor to be receiving the Vanguard Award from the Sundance Film Festival,” said Nia DaCosta. “It’s also incredibly fitting because all of the qualities of creative independence and intentional storytelling I am being recognized for are things I learned there, on the mountain during the Sundance Institute labs with Bob Redford, Michelle Satter, and their wonderful team. I can’t wait to accept this award, but most importantly I cannot wait to celebrate Bob, the Festival, and all of the amazing filmmakers in Park City next year.”
Director Geeta Gandbhir is an Emmy, Independent Spirit, and Peabody Award–winning filmmaker. Her documentary ‘The Perfect Neighbor’ (Netflix) premiered in the U.S. Documentary Competition category at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and won the juried Directing Award: U.S. Documentary. As a director,
her other recent credits include ‘Katrina: Come Hell and High Water’ (2025), ‘Eyes on the Prize’ (2025), ‘The Devil Is Busy’ (2024), ‘How We Get Free’ (2023), ‘Born in Synanon’ (2023), and ‘Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power’ (2022).
“For many years, the Sundance Film Festival has been a guiding light for me — a place where bold, uncompromising stories find their home,” said Geeta Gandbhir. “The Festival has always embodied the kind of filmmaking I strive for: courageous, deeply human, and unafraid to confront difficult truths. What has meant the most to me is how the Festival continues to build community — one that not only celebrates artistic excellence but actively uplifts underrepresented voices and filmmakers who challenge the status quo. As someone whose work is rooted in justice, empathy, and the power of storytelling to spark change, being recognized with the Vanguard Award is profoundly meaningful. I’m deeply honored to be part of this community and this legacy of truth-telling and transformation.”

SETON HALL UNIVERSITY’S STILLMAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS EXPANDS UNDERGRADUATE OFFERINGS
-
By Mabel Pais
Seton Hall University’s (shu.edu) Stillman School of Business (shu.edu/business) is expanding its undergraduate offerings with the addition of two new undergraduate majors: Forensic Accounting and Wealth Management. Both programs were created in response to industry demand for graduates who are prepared to step into fast-growing, specialized roles in the financial sector.
“These new programs reflect Seton Hall’s focus on innovation and preparing students for meaningful careers,” said Joyce Strawser, Ph.D. (shu.edu/profiles/joycestrawser), Stillman School dean and associate professor of accounting and taxation. “Forensic accounting and wealth management are fields where the need for ethical leaders is especially critical, and our students will be ready to make a difference.”
The new Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) in Forensic Accounting (shu.edu/academics/bsba-forensic-accounting) blends coursework in accounting, business analytics and criminal justice. Students learn how to investigate financial fraud, analyze records and support legal proceedings.
Courses cover topics such as forensic accounting, criminal procedure and evidence, business intelligence and federal taxation. Graduates will be positioned for careers in public accounting firms, corporations, government agencies and law enforcement.
The program also prepares students to pursue the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential, which can lead to increased career opportunities and higher earning potential.
“With fraud and financial crime becoming more complex, organizations are seeking professionals who can uncover irregularities and help safeguard assets,” said Mark Holtzman, C.P.A., Ph.D. (shu.edu/profiles/markholtzman), chair and associate professor, department of accounting and taxation. “Our graduates will be uniquely prepared to serve both the business community and the public interest.”
The Stillman School is **AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accredited in both business and accounting — an achievement earned by less than one percent of business schools worldwide.

Assistant Dean and Instructor of Finance Mark Schild works with students in the Trading Room, a hands-on learning environment for business students. (Credit for both: shu.edu) The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) in Wealth Management (events.shu.edu/event/44385-division-of-finance-open-forum) takes a comprehensive approach to preparing students for careers in personal financial advising, investment planning, and financial consulting. A hallmark of the program is its focus on behavioral finance, teaching students to understand client decision-making and build trust-based relationships.
Students in the program will gain practical experience through internships, financial labs, and volunteer opportunities, including the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. They will also earn industry credentials such as the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) and Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) certifications. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) exam.
“Our wealth management program is designed to go beyond technical knowledge,” said Stillman’s Associate Dean for Student Success and Instructor of Finance Mark Schild, M.B.A. (shu.edu/profiles/MarkSchild), “We want students to be able to provide trusted guidance to clients, addressing not only investments but the broader financial challenges people face throughout their lives.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for financial advisors are projected to grow 17 percent by 2033. Forensic accounting also continues to be one of the most in-demand specialties in the profession.
“These majors are the latest examples of how Seton Hall prepares students for success,” Strawser said. “Through the benefit of rigorous academics, hands-on learning and strong industry connections, our graduates are ready to lead and thrive in some of the most important and fastest-growing areas of business.”

BURT BACHARACH
For nearly 70 years, Burt Bacharach supplied the soundtrack of the American experience. His is one of the most stylistically diverse and individualistic catalogues in popular music.Through his early classical training undercomposer Darius Milhaud and his exposure to the vibrant New York City Jazz scene as a teenager in the early 1940s, Bacharach was able to seamlessly amalgamate a wide range of stylistic influences to create his own brand of popular song.
His catalogue of hits served as a bridge from the classic Great American Songbook standards of the early 20th century to the post Rock n’ Roll era of popular music, creating a library of songs that became the soundtrack to the lives of multiple generations… recorded by everyone from Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin to Adele, from Frank Sinatra to Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello.

BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA DELIVER THE GIFT OF JOY
-
By Mabel Pais
The BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA deliver the gift of joy at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on Sunday, December 21 at 3PM.
In this uplifting holiday show, the GRAMMY®-winning gospel legends perform Christmas classics and songs from their albums ‘Go Tell It on the Mountain’ and ‘Talkin’ Christmas.’ You’ll be singing and clapping along with the spirit of the season.
Hailed as “gospel titans” by Rolling Stone, the Blind Boys of Alabama defied the considerable odds stacked against them in the segregated south, working their way up from singing for pocket change to performing for three different American presidents. Inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2003, the group has won five Grammy Awards for their albums (plus a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award), received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and collaborated with artists as diverse as Mavis Staples, Stevie Wonder, Chrissie Hynde, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, and Bon Iver. Beyond the group’s considerable commercial success, the artistic influence the Blind Boys imparted onto their contemporaries and the generations of gospel, rock, and soul singers who followed is immeasurable.
The New York Times explained that in their earlier years, the band “came to epitomize what is known as jubilee singing, a livelier breed of gospel music,” adding that “they made it zestier still by adding jazz and blues idioms and turning up the volume, creating a sound…like the rock ‘n’ roll that grew out of it.” TIME raved that the group has always been “hunting for—and finding—the perfect note or harmony that lifts an old tune into the sublime,” while The Washington Post praised their “soul-stirring harmonies” and “cross-genre collaborations,” and The New Yorker simply dubbed them “legendary.”
“One of the greatest and most venerated gospel groups the world has ever known … an impeccable mix of polished blues, swinging soul and from-the-gut gospel.”
TICKETS
Tickets for the ‘Blind Boys of Alabama’ can be purchased by visiting NJPAC.org or the NJPAC Box Office or by calling 888.GO.NJPAC (888.466.5722).
