STRIPPED FOR PARTS: AMERICAN JOURNALISM ON THE BRINK

Director: Rick Goldsmith; USA; 2023; 100m

Stripped for Parts: Journalism on the Brink – protest (Photo : Courtesy dmagpr.com)

‘Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink’ is the story of one secretive hedge fund that is plundering America’s newspapers and the journalists who are fighting back. Investigative reporter Julie Reynolds, Denver Post editorialist Chuck Plunkett and a handful of others, backed by the NewsGuild union, go toe-to-toe with the faceless Alden Global Capital in a battle to save and rebuild local journalism across America.

Who will control the future of America’s news ecosystem: Wall Street billionaires concerned only with profit, or those who see journalism as an essential public service and the lifeblood of our democracy?

    BLACK BOX DIARIES

    Based on the International Bestseller

    Director: Shiori Ito; 2024; Japan/USA/UK; Japanese w/English subs; 103m

Director Shiori Ito (Photo : Courtesy norget.com)

‘BLACK BOX DIARIES’ follows director and journalist Shiori Ito’s courageous investigation of her own sexual assault in an improbable attempt to prosecute her high-profile offender. Unfolding like a thriller and combining secret investigative recordings, vérité shooting and emotional first-person video, Shiori’s quest becomes a landmark case in Japan, exposing the country’s desperately outdated judicial and societal systems.

From the director, Shiroi Ito, ”I pushed myself to the limit in shooting this documentary. Upon revisiting the hotel where I was raped, I felt the damage I was doing to myself might be too much. But at the same time, my desire to change society and tell this story kept me alive. Now, four years after winning the civil case, I can with more objectivity watch the scenes of my breaking down, passing moments of joy and normalcy, and absurd comedy in my novice investigator techniques – and to conceive how they can come together to form our film.”

“A black box is defined as a system whose internal workings are hidden or not readily understood. Japan is a land of black boxes, and I learned what happens in this society when you start opening them. Our film is not about seeking criminal justice against my perpetrator or about politics of the left and right. Rather, it is the story of one woman’s experience – my black box, laid open for all to see.”

Opening date: October 25 at Film Forum, New York.

    ZURAWSKI V TEXAS

Directors: Maisie Crow (Jackson) and Abbie Perrault; USA; 98m

In an election year where the battle over reproductive healthcare rights is at the heart of America’s political discourse, Zurawski v Texas reveals a historic courtroom challenge led by women demanding change. At the forefront is Amanda Zurawski, who suffered septic shock when doctors, constrained by restrictive abortion laws, refused to provide her with necessary medical care, leaving her ability to have children compromised. Amanda’s story is not unique. Samantha Casiano, a mother of four, faced the devastating loss of her daughter, who was diagnosed with a fatal condition in utero. Forced to carry her baby to term, Samantha endured the heartbreak of her child’s near-immediate death. Lawyer Molly Duane leads the legal fight against a Texas law so oppressive that it has made doctors fearful of acting, even when their patients’ lives are at risk. Among these doctors is Austin Dennard, a plaintiff in the case who had to travel out of state to obtain her own abortion after learning that her pregnancy had a fatal diagnosis and a miscarriage was inevitable.

These deeply personal stories form the emotional core of Zurawski v Texas, a documentary that uncovers the traumatic consequences of restrictive healthcare legislation.

Opening date: October 25. Check local listings.

    MY NAME IS ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Director: Mark Cousins; 2022; Doc; Eng; 120m

A century after the debut of Alfred Hitchcock’s first feature, he remains one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. But how does his vast body of work and legacy hold up in today’s world?

Mark Cousins, the award-winning filmmaker, tackles this question and looks at the auteur with a new and radical approach: through the use of his own voice. As Hitchcock rewatches his films, we are taken on an odyssey through his vast career – his vivid silent films, the legendary films of the 1950s and 60s and his later works – in playful and revealing ways.

Opening date: Open in theaters in New York & Los Angeles, October 25.

    NOCTURNES

Directors: Anirban Dutta & Anupama Srinivasan; 2024; India, USA; Hindi, English, Bugun; 83m

    Moths (Photo : Courtesy cineticmedia.com)

In the dark of night, two curious observers, ecologist Mansi with local observer Bicki, shine a light on a secret universe – the nighttime lives of moths. Together, these scientists are on an expedition to decode these nocturnal creatures in a remote ecological “hot spot” on the border of India and Bhutan. The result transports audiences to a rarely-seen place and captures through rapturous visuals the stunning biodiversity of our natural world. Featuring unforgettable immersive sound design that won a Special Award for Craft at Sundance, ‘NOCTURNES’ urges us all to look more closely at the hidden interconnections of nature and the whispered consequences of a changing climate.

    NJYS CONCERT HONORS AMERICA’S VETERANS

    • By Mabel Pais

The New Jersey Youth Symphony’s (NJYS) 200 youth will present a concert ‘Rhapsody in Red, White and Blue!’ to honor America’s veterans and armed forces on Sunday, November 3 at 3:00 p.m. at the Patriots Theater at the War Memorial (1 Memorial Drive Trenton, NJ 08608. Phone: 609-984-8484) in Trenton.

Audiences are invited to enjoy a heartfelt homage to the brave men and women who have served our country featuring the New Jersey premiere of Peter Boyer’s ‘Rhapsody in Red, White, and Blue’ with acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Biegel. Biegel commissioned Boyer to compose the piece to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the premiere of George Gershwin’s iconic ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and gave its first performance in June 2023 with the Utah Symphony. Biegel later recorded the work for the Naxos (naxos.com) label with the London Symphony Orchestra and Boyer conducting. To support American orchestras post-pandemic, Biegel developed the Rhapsody National Initiative, which entails performances of ‘Rhapsody in Red, White and Blue’ with at least one orchestra in all 50 states over the course of three years at no cost to the orchestras that participate. NJYS is honored to be one of three youth orchestras participating in the initiative and presenting the New Jersey premiere of this historic work.

Said Biegel, “I created the 50 states Rhapsody National Initiative as the first commissioning project not requiring orchestras to pay toward the composer’s fee, and to bring orchestras in all 50 states to the initiative celebrating orchestras and music in America. Peter Boyer’s ‘Rhapsody in Red, White and Blue’ is a fabulous work reflecting the American flag, and music since the time of George Gershwin’s 1924 ‘Rhapsody in Blue,’ for whose centennial the new Rhapsody celebrates. The New Jersey Youth Symphony represents the state of New Jersey and the vibrant young musicians taking part in this unprecedented national endeavor.”

“At this Veterans Day concert, we proudly continue our tradition of performing works by American composers to honor those who have served. It is both exciting and historic for our young musicians to present the New Jersey premiere of Peter Boyer’s ‘Rhapsody in Red, White, and Blue’ with Jeffrey Biegel,” said Helen Cha-Pyo, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. “Projects like this bring generations together, uniting people through the creation of new works that celebrate the present and inspire the future of America.”

Two ensembles from the New Jersey Youth Chorus (NJYC) will also take the stage at the Patriots Theater in a stirring selection of patriotic music celebrating the spirit of freedom. In addition to the New Jersey premiere of Boyer’s work, the concert will feature American favorites, including ‘Candide Overture’ and music from ‘West Side Story’ by Leonard Bernstein as well as ‘Three Spirituals’ by the prolific African American composer, Adolphus Hailstork. Not-to-be-missed are performances of ‘America the Beautiful,’ ‘Armed Forces Salute,’ and more!

  • WITNESS THE SOULFUL MUSIC OF KAILASH KHER & KAILASA

    • By Mabel Pais

Witness the soulful rendition of Kailash Kher and his band Kailasa as they perform on October 19, 2024 at International House, 500 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10027 (ihouse-nyc.org – 212-316-8400).

    Kailash Kher (Credit: iaac.us)

    KAILASH KHER

Kailash Kher is an Indian music composer and singer. He sings songs with a music style influenced by Indian folk music and Sufi music. He was inspired by the classical musicians Kumar Gandharva, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Bhimsen Joshi, and the Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Kailash Kher received the Padma Shri award in 2017 from the Indian government. He has also received two Filmfare Awards; Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the Hindi film ‘Fanaa’ (2006) and Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer – Telugu for the Telugu film ‘Mirchi’ (2013), along with several other nominations.

    A. R. Rahman said of Kailash Kher, “Kher has a uniquely soulful, raw and high-pitched voice. I remember how I first heard of him. I had asked Mehboob, our lyricist, for a new voice that is earthy and strong, and he said, I have just the person for you. That voice can only be that of Kailash! And he sent Kailash to meet me. The moment I heard him, I knew that here was a voice that was so wonderful, and which had its own unique space…. I want to say that Kailash Kher’s voice has something that had been lacking a lot – it had pure soul! Allah Ke Bande is one of my all-time favorite songs.”

With his powerful voice and his unique style of music, Kher has established himself as one of the most popular playback singers of India.

    KAILASA

Kailasa is an Indian fusion band, founded by Kailash Kher. The name of the band is taken from an accented pronunciation of Kailash’s own name as well as Mount Kailash, the abode of Hindu God Shiva. Along with guitars, drums and keyboards, the band incorporates classical Indian instruments and sometimes traditional lyrics into their songs to infuse folk and a Sufi hue.

The band is renowned all over the world for being one of the only pure live Hindustani music bands and one of the most celebrated bands in India. What started off as a trio of Mr. Paresh Kamath, Mr. Naresh Kamath and Padma Shri Kailash Kher has now grown into a collective of some of the most talented musicians, instrumentalists and technical crew that the country has to offer.

The Kailasa Band has taken the music of the country to multiple countries: United States of America, England, South Africa, Australia, Mauritius, to name a few, having performed in various prestigious venues and acclaimed music festivals across the world, in a career spanning nearly 2 decades and over 1500 concerts. Some of the venues and festivals that the Kailasa Band have performed include but are not limited to: The Hollywood Bowl  in Los Angeles, The Kennedy Center in Washington, the historical ‘Fillmore Center’ in San Francisco, Royal Festival Hall in London, Symphony Hall in Birmingham, the ‘Santa Monica Pier Music Festival,’ ‘Stern Grove Music Festival,’ ‘International Music Festival’ at Webster Hall, New York, to name a few. • SOLE OSCAR-QUALIFYING SOUTH ASIAN FILM FEST RETURNS TO SEATTLE

    • By Mabel Pais

The annual eagerly awaited 19th edition of the Tasveer Film Festival & Market (tasveerfestival.org – TFFM) makes history this year marking a pivotal moment for South Asian Cinema in North America, taking place in Seattle, Washington State. Not only does this year’s festival celebrate the vibrant storytelling of the region, but it also launches North America’s first-ever global film market dedicated to South Asian filmmakers. The Festival runs October 15-20, 2024 at the Seattle Center and the Tasveer Film Market (TFM) will feature the celebrated, award-winning filmmaker Deepa Mehta (‘Fire’, ‘Water’) as the inaugural Keynote Speaker, setting the stage for an unmissable event.

    THE TASVEER FILM MARKET

The Tasveer Film Market is a groundbreaking initiative designed to reshape financial and distribution models for South Asian filmmakers worldwide. With a focus on expanding the reach and fostering collaboration, the market will host events such as the Co-Production Market, Tasveer Film Fund pitches (supported by Netflix), industry panels, and networking sessions. These activities aim to empower creatives by connecting them with producing partners, distributors, and global platforms.

The Tasveer Film Market will include keynotes by influential figures such as directors Deepa Mehta, and Pan Nalin (‘Last Film Show’, ‘Angry Indian Goddesses’), and representatives from companies such as CAA, WME, Blumhouse, NBCU Launch, Amazon MGM Studios, Red Sea Film Foundation, and more.

“As the first film market dedicated to the South Asian community, our mission is to build a groundbreaking platform where diverse voices can thrive and be heard,” said Rita Meher, Founder of the Tasveer Film Market and Co-Founder of the Tasveer Film Festival. “By carving out this space, we aim to empower underrepresented filmmakers, amplify South Asian stories, and foster global connections that will bring these narratives to the world stage.”

Deepa Mehta added, “Tasveer Film Festival’s legacy and contribution to South Asian cinema is one for the history books. Launching the first South Asian film market on a global scale could not have come at a better time. I am honored to inaugurate the Tasveer Film Market this year.”

Meticulously curated projects, including Narrative, Documentary, and TV projects, all seeking producing partners, Minimum Guarantee (MG) deals, sales, and distribution will be showcased at the market. Tasveer’s flagship Tasveer Film Fund Short Film Pitches, supported by Netflix, will have finalists present their projects for a chance to secure a $25,000 grant, with a total of $75,000 available in funding.

THE TASVEER FILM FESTIVAL: A LEGACY OF EMPOWERMENT THROUGH STORYTELLING

As the only Oscar® qualifying South Asian Film Festival globally in the short film category, Tasveer has championed social change through the power of South Asian storytelling. This year’s Tasveer Film Festival (TFF), October 15-20, 2024, is a testament to that commitment and will showcase 110 films including 36 world premieres, 28 North American premieres, 45 Seattle premieres, and 19 feature films from 15 countries (Bangladesh, Canada, France, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, India, United Kingdom, United States, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal, and Sweden).

There are 91 short films that are a part of the class of the 2024 edition with 35 world premieres, 22 North American premieres, and 33 Seattle premieres. Some of the impressive short films in the lineup are Yassa Khan’s ‘Pink’ (World Premiere), Rippen Sindher’s ‘Flight 182’ (N. American Premiere), Tathagata Ghosh’s ‘If’ (Seattle premiere), and more. 52 films of the 110 films showcased at the festival are by women, trans, and non-binary directors.

This year the festival boasts of prolific jury members who will be in attendance such as Oscar-nominated filmmaker Shaunak Sen (‘All That Breathes), actor Omi Vaidya (‘3 Idiots’) and director Geeta V. Patel (‘House of the Dragon’).

Some of the selected films that reflect the vision and filmmaking artistry of South Asian filmmakers and important issues from the subcontinent and diaspora are Payal Kapadia’s feature narrative debut, ‘All We Imagine as Light’ – the 2024 Cannes Grand Prix winner, Iram Parveen Bilal’s social media true story, ‘Wakhri’, Nik Dodani’s LGBTQIA+ semi-autobiographical drama, ‘Blue Boy’, and more.

BFF Founders and Executive Directors, Christine, and Mark Holder, said, “We are thrilled with the inaugural lineup of films and special events our team has lined up for this first edition of the Boise Film Festival. From the beginning, we have said we hope to be matchmakers here in our adopted city between film lovers and the type of films and filmmakers that we have championed in our careers as producers and filmmakers. Following what should be a fun night of hockey on film with our 20th anniversary presentation of ‘Miracle,’ will be a carefully curated and diverse group of films spanning several genres, as well as highly anticipated film industry panels, Q&As, and master classes, bringing a lot of top talent right here to Boise.”

  • NEW JERSEY’S STELLAR PERFORMING CENTER BREAKS GROUND ON $MULTI-MILLION CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT

NEW JERSEY’S STELLAR PERFORMING CENTER BREAKS GROUND ON $MULTI-MILLION CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT

    • By Mabel Pais

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) made history on September 18, 2024 when breaking ground on the $336 million redevelopment of its 12-acre campus. The Center that has been a catalyst for change in the region and the State of New Jersey will transform downtown Newark bringing hundreds of new residences, shops, restaurants, new outdoor gathering spaces and a unique education and community center with professional rehearsal spaces.

The reimagined campus, scheduled to be completed in Fall 2027, will include ArtSide, a mixed-use, mixed-income residential complex developed by NJPAC, LMXD and MCI Collective, and planned and designed by celebrated architectural firm Skidmore Owings & Merrill. ArtSide will consist of 350 rental units (20% of which will be affordable housing) new retail spaces, an education and community center, professional rehearsal studios — among them a new home for Newark’s beloved jazz public radio station, WBGO — as well as an extension of Mulberry Street, on what is now NJPAC’s Parking Lot A.

The 58,000-square-foot Cooperman Family Arts Education and Community Center, designed by the renowned architectural firm of Weiss/Manfredi, will be built on Parking Lot C. A dynamic redesign of NJPAC’s front yard,Chambers Plaza, and the addition of a new space, Essex County Green, to the Arts Center’s campus, will create a four-season urban park. Landscape architecture studio Future Green created the design for the new Chambers Plaza.

Newark’s OCA Architects will design renovations of 31 Mulberry Street, an existing building NJPAC recently acquired adjacent to the site of the Cooperman Center. The building will house additional spaces for community gatherings, plus educational and office spaces for the Arts Center. NJPAC’s eastern façade, certain interiors and loading docks will also be redesigned.

“NJPAC’s campus redevelopment is more than a construction project; it’s a powerful investment in Newark’s communities and future,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “This initiative will not only provide more housing and commercial spaces, but also create vibrant cultural and educational opportunities that will enrich the lives of Newark residents for generations to come. I’m proud to support this transformative project that embodies the spirit of creativity and inclusivity that is at the heart of our state.”

“Newark is a city rich in history and possibilities, and NJPAC’s role as an active, engaged and productive anchor cultural institution in its future is an extraordinarily exciting one,” said NJPAC CEO John Schreiber. “We’re grateful beyond measure to the remarkable coalition of partners, both public and private, who have collaborated with us to make this new neighborhood an exciting reality.”

Among the partners who have joined in the planning and development of NJPAC’s campus redevelopment are the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), which granted the project’s $200M tax credits under the Transformative Aspire Program; Prudential Financial, which facilitated the master planning of the campus redesign and financed NJPAC’s pre-development needs; Liberty Mutual, which committed to investing across the capital stack as both an Aspire tax credit investor and a limited partner; Citi Community Capital, which spearheaded construction lending and low-income housing tax credit investing for the project; TD Bank, which provided NJPAC with New Markets Tax Credit allocation for the Cooperman Center construction and a tax-exempt bond for other campus improvements; Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr., and the County of Essex, who supported the redesign of campus outdoor spaces; co-development partner Siree Morris, Managing Director of MCI Collective; the New Jersey Housing Mortgage Finance Agency and Freddie Mac, which provided permanent loan commitments; and New Jersey Community Capital which provided support in New Market Tax Credits.

LMXD partnered with NJPAC to manage design, approvals and financing for the project.

“The streets of Newark have always been steeped in the arts. This is a city where jazz and hip hop are in the breeze, and every wall without a mural is just a canvas no one’s yet claimed,” said Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “The new neighborhood around NJPAC will fully embrace that dynamic spirit, bringing more housing, stores and gathering places to our already lively downtown. And one of the highest notes of all will be the new headquarters for our city’s iconic jazz station, WBGO.”

Philanthropic support from major donors who contributed to the Arts Center’s $244 million Capital Campaign, completed in December 2024, also helped finance the project. Notably, Leon and Toby Cooperman and the Cooperman family made a foundational gift to the construction of the Cooperman Center, which will headquarter NJPAC’s Arts Education, Arts & Well-Being and Community Engagement initiatives.

“Ensuring young people have the best chances at their brightest futures is at the heart of our family’s giving,” said Leon Cooperman, a legend in the investment world and Chairman and CEO of Omega Family Office. “The Cooperman Center, a new home for so much of NJPAC’s Arts Education and Community Engagement work, will be in service to everyone, from infants to older adults. Newark is a city of creativity, and I believe the Center has a unique opportunity to contribute to its future.”

The Arts Center celebrated the groundbreaking on the project today with remarks from Governor Murphy; Mayor Baraka; Mr. Cooperman; Mr. Schreiber; state Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz; Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin; Newark Council President and Central Ward Councilwoman LaMonica McIver; Prudential Financial Chairman and CEO Charles Lowrey; NJEDA CEO Tim Sullivan; LMXD CEO David Dishy; Siree Morris, Managing Partner, MCI Collective; Ommeed Sathe, Head of Impact and Sustainable Investments at Liberty Mutual Investments; and WBGO President and CEO Steve Williams.

NJPAC donors, supporters, staff and community partners attended the event, which was followed by outdoor performances by marching bands and student jazz ensembles, art activities and a mini food-truck festival on the parking lots that will be transformed by the redevelopment project.

  • DODGE FOUNDATION WITH NJPAC CELEBRATES PEAK OF YEAR-LONG SOCIAL-CHANGE-MAKING FESTIVAL

DODGE FOUNDATION WITH NJPAC CELEBRATES PEAK OF YEAR-LONG SOCIAL-CHANGE-MAKING FESTIVAL

    • By Mabel Pais

The 20th Dodge Poetry Festival, a collaboration of Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation (Dodge Foundation) and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) brings the festival to its climax with a full line-up, October 17-19, 2024.

With its headquarters at NJPAC since 2010, the reimagined Festival will fill downtown Newark with poetry and music, as the culmination of the organizations’ year-long 2024 Dodge Poetry initiative. The lineup is a gathering of legends working in multiple poetic forms, whose words have touched hearts and made a powerful case for the need for social justice.

Over the course of 40 years, this event, the country’s largest poetry festival, has welcomed more than 150,000 people to readings, performances and more. The 2024 Festival will mix spoken word poetry with jazz, hip hop and R&B at readings, performances, outdoor events and more. All are designed to inspire a community mobilizing for racial and social justice, repair, and healing.

“The Dodge Foundation has a long legacy of creating opportunities for people to explore and engage with poetry. We are thrilled about the reimagined Dodge Poetry initiative with NJPAC, and this 20th Dodge Poetry Festival, and we look forward to expanding our ability to reach new places and people and highlight artists and activists who address issues of social justice,” says Preston D. Pinkett III, Board Chair of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

“We hope to shine a light on all the ways that poetry is, and has always been, a vehicle for making change, for promoting social justice, for bringing communities closer together by helping us see the world through someone else’s eyes,” says David Rodriguez, NJPAC’s Executive Vice President and Executive Producer.

Rodriguez continues, “At the same time, we’ve curated a series of performances for the 20th Dodge Poetry Festival at which spoken word poetry shares the stage with hip hop, jazz, R&B, and more. All these art forms complement each other and amplify each other’s impact. When you put them together under a spotlight, you get something much bigger than the sum of their parts.”

    Festival highlights include:

Opening Day of the Festival — Thursday, October 17, is devoted in part to programs on artistic and professional development for poets and writers. Simultaneously, the Academy of American Poets [curators of Poem-a-Day – poets.org/poem-a-day] will present three panels on poetry’s ability to invite reflection and creative reawakening, featuring the Academy Chancellors, an honorary group of esteemed poets who advise the organization on artistic matters and serve as ambassadors of poetry at large.

That evening, the Newark-based spoken word poetry organization EvoluCulture [evoluculture.com) will host a free open mic and mixer in NICO Kitchen + Bar, the restaurant on NJPAC’s campus.

EMPRESS OF SOUL GRACES NJ AUDIENCES

    • By Mabel Pais

Known as the ‘Empress of Soul,’ Gladys Knight is a Seven-Time Grammy Award winner, and has been one of the greatest who has endured her talent and success. She will perform live at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on Friday, September 27, at 8:00 p.m.

She is among the few singers over the last fifty years who have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performance. Gladys Knight never disappoints by putting on a high-energy show performing all of her hits that stand the test of time and the songs that everyone knows and loves like ‘Midnight Train to Georgia,’ ‘Heard it Through The Grapevine,’ ‘That’s What Friends Are For,’ and so much more.

Gladys Knight was bestowed with the National Medal of the Arts for her contributions and influences on American culture. This is the highest honor given to artists and art patrons by the United States Government.

Knight was born in Atlanta and rose to fame as the lead singer of Gladys Knight & the Pips, later establishing herself as a famous solo artist. Knight has two No. 1 Billboard singles, ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ and ‘That’s What Friends Are For,’ which she recorded in 1986 with Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Dionne Warwick — along with eleven No. 1 R&B singles and six No. 1 R&B albums, the Deseret News reported.

The Fall of 2015 marked the release of Knight’s first mainstream dance record, ‘Just A Little’ in nearly twenty years. The song serves as the lead single from her twelfth studio album that she is currently on.

Knight, who is a two-time Grammy winner in the gospel category, yet again embraced her gospel roots, releasing her inspirational album ‘Where My Heart Belongs’, in September 2014. The album was a major success and won an NAACP Image Award for ‘Outstanding Gospel Album’.

The Christmas Season of 2014 found Knight returning to the small screen in the Lifetime original movie ‘Seasons of Love’. In the story about two lovers as they journey through life, love and family, Knight stars alongside Oscar-nominee Taraji P. Henson and fellow Grammy winner Cliff ‘Method Man’ Smith. In the New Year she was a guest on Lee Daniels and FOX TV’s new series ‘Empire” opposite Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson.

Also on the small screen, Knight shared her musical expertise on the first and second season of Centric’s original series ‘Apollo Live.’  Joining judges Doug E. Fresh and Michael Bivins, the legendary songstress gave guidance to contestants as they took the stage with the hope to jumpstart their career in the entertainment industry.

No stranger to performing and light choreography over the course of her career, Knight raised the stakes when she put on her dancing shoes in the spring of 2012. She joined the cast of ABC’s hit reality competition ‘Dancing with the Stars’ for season 14, partnering with Tristan MacManus.

Knight, known as the ‘Empress of Soul,’ a longtime Las Vegas resident, returned to the Strip in the late-2000s to the famed Tropicana Hotel for a special engagement that ran in the newly named Gladys Knight Theater, making her the first African-American performer to have a venue named after her in Las Vegas.

In February 2011, Knight reunited with Elton John, Dionne Warwick, and Stevie Wonder for the first time in 25 years to perform their Grammy-winning song, ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ at an AIDS research benefit at the downtown Cipriani in New York. Adored the world over, Knight then toured across the UK, performing at packed arenas that included a sold-out performance at Wembley Stadium.

Knight fans enjoyed ‘Before Me’ – Knight’s last big commercial effort – which paid homage to the great legends of song – Ella, Duke, Billie, Lena – as well as the many artists who served as Knight’s friends, mentors, colleagues and inspiration throughout her career. Knight’s second collaboration with the ‘Saints Unified Voices’ gospel choir, A Christmas Celebration, was an album of holiday classics. Coming off of a ‘Best Gospel/Choir Album’ Grammy win with their debut album ‘One Voice’, Knight again directed the 100-member multicultural choir she formed, injecting their unique flavor and definitive soul into such Christmas staples as ‘Silent Night,’ ‘White Christmas,’ and a medley of ‘Winter Wonderland/Jingle Bells’ among others.

A tireless performer who still wows audiences around the country and the world, Knight also finds the time to make forays into film and television. Her version of ‘I Hope You Dance’ played during the end credits of Tyler Perry’s ‘THE FAMILY THAT PREYS TOGETHER’, and she appeared in his film ‘I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF’ (which featured her song ‘The Need to Be’).

Knight has appeared as a guest judge on FOX’s smash hit ‘American Idol,’ and has performed in the show’s always star-studded finale. In season two of ‘Idol,’ Knight famously dubbed eventual winner Ruben Studdard the ‘Velvet Teddy Bear’ while she sat in the guest judge’s chair.

In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, ‘Gladys Knight & The Pips’ were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Knight published an autobiography, ‘Between Each Line of Pain and Glory’ (a line taken from her million selling recording ‘Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me’), in 1997, and the next year, she and ‘The Pips’ were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. In 2004, Knight received the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the annual BET Awards ceremony.

A humanitarian and philanthropist, Knight has devoted herself to various worthy causes, including the American Diabetes Association – for which she is a national spokesperson, the American Cancer Society, the Minority AIDS Project, amFAR and Crisis Intervention, and The Boys and Girls Club. She has been honored by numerous organizations as well, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), B’Nai Brith, and is a recent recipient of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award. A tireless humanitarian, Knight is an iconic supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of America, to which she donated a Randy Jackson-produced song, ‘The Dream’.

Today, Knight and husband William, along with various other members of the family, oversee her busy career from the Las Vegas headquarters. She is a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, performer, restaurateur, and businesswoman with a spiritual outlook on her life. Her faith in God has been the driving force behind all of Knight’s endeavors, guiding her through her many successes.

In February 2024, the 17th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival took place in the Pink City of Jaipur, Rajasthan. It was a magnificent success, affirming the power of words and ideas through a remarkable line-up of speakers and sessions. The Festival’s indomitable and inspiring spirit reached the festival’s audiences, both digitally and in-person.

This year, the vibrant energy of the Jaipur Festival makes its return to New York. The 8th edition of the festival is taking place September 9-11, 2024.

Through 2021-2022, virtual versions of JLF kept the spirit of creative conversations alive during the Covid years. Writers, thinkers, poets, artists, and filmmakers engaged in captivating discussions.

In 2023, JLF successfully held another on ground edition of JLF New York, following two successful virtual editions in collaboration with the Consulate General of India – New York, Asia Society, The National Arts Club, The Centre for Fiction, and Sundaram Tagore Gallery.

This year, JLF returns to celebrate the cosmopolitanism and liveliness of New York City. JLF once again brings forth its signature camaraderie, a caravan of ideas, and the enchanting flow of conversations that make our festival truly incredible!

  • ‘SPIDER MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’ LANDS LIVE IN NJ

‘SPIDER MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’ LANDS LIVE IN NJ

    • By Mabel Pais

The next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga and the highly anticipated sequel ‘Spider-Man™: Across the Spider-Verse Live in Concert’  makes its landing at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on Sunday, September 22 at 3 pm.

The films have become a sensation for their incredible and ground-breaking soundtracks which have been heralded for their unique mix of orchestral and electronic music, and scratch DJ’ing.

In ‘Spider-Man™: Across the Spider-Verse’ Live in Concert audiences will see the film presented on a huge HD screen, accompanied by a range of musicians and instrumentalists performing music from the film’s score and soundtrack live to picture. This will include an orchestra, a scratch DJ on turntables, percussion and electronic instruments.

The score for the film was created by Emmy-winning and Academy Award® and Golden Globe®-nominated composer, Daniel Pemberton, known for his work on movies such as ‘Ferrari’, ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,’ ‘Oceans 8’, ‘Enola Holmes’, ‘The Bad Guys’ and ‘Steve Jobs’.

Pemberton took influence for both Spider-Verse film scores from growing up amid the London rave scene in the 90s, where he regularly immersed himself in ambient and techno nights. Daniel also drew inspiration from the scratch DJ’s at ‘The Blue Note Club’ in East London, where he first witnessed scratching vinyl being used in an artistic form. This, coupled with heavy-drumming and punk guitars, gives the soundtrack its unique sound, fusing genres to make something bold and unparalleled which will be brought to life in an exhilarating style in these live concerts.

“Across The Spider-Verse is probably the most exciting, groundbreaking and impactful score I’ve written,” says Pemberton. “I’ve always believed that there should be no barriers to music, but it’s rare to get the opportunity that you get within the Spider-Verse – where else could you have powerful orchestral themes side by side with punk drum solos, virtuoso record scratching next to twisted electronics, off-kilter whistling next to hip-hop beats?”

The film’s soundtrack was curated by Metro Boomin, and features the likes of Future, Nas, Swae Lee, James Blake, Lil Wayne, Lil Uzi Vert, and more.

Pemberton says, “Watching the film with the live band performing in a huge room of people is one of the most thrilling ways to experience it and it’s a huge honor to know that audiences are going to get a show that delivers a unique emotional hit they will hopefully remember for a long, long time after.”

Miles Morales (Spider-Man) returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy (Spider-Gwen), Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse’s very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask – it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero.

    • By Mabel Pais

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), the state’s anchor cultural institution, celebrates 27 years of offering thousands of high schoolers from Newark and beyond, music lessons and performance experiences through its popular ‘JAZZ FOR TEENS’ program. One of the first of many arts education institutions at NJPAC, it has grown into a nationally recognized and revered program producing stellar alumni such as MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Tyshawn Sorey.

The 2024-25 school year is about to begin and is now accepting students for both the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters. Registration is now open and closes Sep 23.

‘Jazz for Teens’ is a comprehensive and sequential jazz education program that provides access to top-notch musical training and study with world-class working artists, opportunities for artistic exchange within the community, and college and career exploration.

This school year offers a new program “Business of the Music Business” with class topics including: financial wellness and budgeting; contracting; marketing and publicity; production and more. Classes include jazz history, theory/composition, technique, ensembles, and more. Prospective college students are guided through the application process. Students are given many performance opportunities as members of the James Moody Jazz Orchestra and/or George Wein Scholars Ensemble (performing at the Newport Jazz Festival). All students record their own compositions together in a studio setting. Field trips to Rutgers University-Newark’s remarkable Institute of Jazz Studies, the largest archive of jazz-related materials in the world, are regular treats for students.

Since 2015, ‘Jazz for Teens’ has been at the helm of Mark Gross, the Director of Jazz Instruction for NJPAC. A multiple GRAMMY-winning alto sax player and composer, Gross has performed and recorded with a roster of greats, including Dizzy Gillespie, Buster Williams, Nat Adderley, Dave Holland, Wynton Marsalis, and more. In addition to Gross, a roster of more than a dozen working jazz musicians including saxophonist Wayne Escoffery and guitarist Alex Wintz (himself an alumnus of the program) as well as celebrated percussionist Alvester Garnett and acclaimed, Russian-born trumpeter Valery Ponomarev, a Jazz Messenger, to name a few — make up the ‘Jazz for Teens’ faculty.  Even more bold-faced names, including eight-time GRAMMY-winning bassist Christian McBride, the Arts Center’s Jazz Advisor, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, and MacArthur “Genius” and Doris Duke Artist award winner Regina Carter offer master classes, working directly with students.
