OPENING NIGHT
WHISTLE – US Premiere
Wednesday, November 12 at SVA Theatre
Top-rate whistlers gather in Hollywood at the annual Masters of Musical Whistling competition, hoping not just to win but to connect.
This year’s opening night film invites us into a world where sensitive, passionate people gather not just to participate in a public competition but to be seen, to connect, and to honor a shared craft. At the Masters of Musical Whistling festival in Hollywood, founder and force-of-nature Carole Anne Kaufman (aka the Whistling Diva) devotes herself to creating an inclusive, international stage for a typically amateur art form that’s nevertheless deeply meaningful for its performers.
Filmmaker Christopher Nelius and his team hone in on a lively group of individuals who arrive in full possession of their quirks and hopes. As the festival’s rehearsals and stages of competition progress, Nelius captures familiar rhythms — camaraderie, playful competitiveness, and tender gestures of support — revealing a community boundless by the pursuit of victory than by simply being there for each other.
‘Whistle’ reminds us that there is a space for everyone in this world — for connection, care, and mutual support.

Amy Goodman “believes that journalism put to its highest use can be the greatest force for good that the world has ever seen,” says her former colleague Dave Isay in ‘Steal This Story, Please!’ It’s the reason that Goodman and her signature show Democracy Now! (celebrating its 30th year in 2026) are revered for integrity and dauntlessness. DOC NYC alumni Tia Lessin and Carl Deal literally chase after Goodman as she pursues the stories that Western corporate media increasingly finds inconvenient to cover. Along the way, they reveal the personal side to her iconic persona, confirming depths of empathy behind the scenes that balloon our appreciation of the force that is Goodman.

Friday, November 14, 2025 6:30 PM
Venue – SVA Theatre
For the five families that control NYC’s Christmas tree trade, the most wonderful time of the year starts months before the first fir tree displays hit busy sidewalks in the five boroughs. There is the competition for sources and locations—not to mention strategizing to stretch the proceeds of five scant weeks into a living for the rest of the year. Celia Aniskovich’s delightful peek behind the curtain of a holiday tradition captures a truly singular cast of characters, among them NYC’s seasonal stand workers, who add extra spice to every sale.

ASK E JEAN – NYC Premiere
In-Person Date: Thursday, November 20, 2025 6:30 PM;
Venue: SVA Theatre
Over a five-decade career, the journalist, author, and talk show host E. Jean Carroll has been revered for her brass-tacks style. In 2019, galvanized by the #MeToo movement, Carroll went public with something she had buried for years: She had been sexually assaulted by Donald Trump. When the president accused her of lying, Carroll fought back with two lawsuits. In documenting Carroll’s story, filmmaker Ivy Meeropol juxtaposes the advice Carroll gave — encouraging women to stand up for themselves, to press charges, to never remain silent — with what she did not do herself at the time. Ask E. Jean examines the societal hurdles women face when confronting predatory men and their lies, highlighting the power of truth to combat gaslighting.

Across her three-decade career, she has stretched fado’s limits, combining it with jazz, flamenco, Latin jazz, and influences from her mother’s home country of Mozambique. Her “dark, rich, commanding contralto” (Washington Post) has led to collaborations with everyone from Lenny Kravitz to Gilberto Gil.
Described as “A dazzling, captivating force to behold” by The Telegraph, the Portuguese artist will mesmerize the audience with her vocal prowess, performing favorite songs from her GRAMMY®-nominated career and 30+ platinum albums.
Born in Mozambique and raised in Lisbon’s working-class district of Mouraria, Mariza was immersed in the rich fado musical culture that resonates throughout Portugal. Although she has taken the world’s stages by storm with her “dark, rich, commanding contralto” (Washington Post). WMI is proud to have presented Mariza three times over its 40 years, most recently in 2017 in partnership with Pioneer Works.

Malaika Arora defends Bollywood dance numbers
Malaika Arora, known for her iconic dance performances in Bollywood, has spoken about the evolution of dance numbers in Indian cinema. In an interview, she shared her perspective on how these performances have transformed over the years, addressing both industry trends and public debate about their role and impact. Her insights highlight shifts in how such sequences are conceived and perceived by both filmmakers and audiences.
Discussing her career trajectory, Malaika reflected on the journey of dance numbers, noting that they have significantly changed since she began. She acknowledged that these routines have sparked debate for years, particularly regarding their narrative relevance and alleged promotion of vulgarity. Despite the controversies, Malaika believes that item songs have come a “long way”.
She explained to Hollywood Reporter, the earlier approach to dance numbers, stating, “Earlier, they were mostly about glamour and spectacle, often detached from a woman’s individuality. Today, filmmakers are more conscious they integrate these numbers into stories with stronger character context. It’s less about being provocative and more about performance and presence. I see it as an evolution where women can own their space.”
Malaika also addressed the ongoing association of item songs with the male gaze, acknowledging its prevalence but highlighting her own outlook. She said, “Yes, item songs have often been linked to the male gaze, but I’ve always looked at them differently. For me, dance is about confidence and expression. When I perform, I focus on enjoying the moment and bringing my own energy to it. As long as I feel comfortable and in control, that’s what matters most. It’s about celebrating the art and having fun with it rather than overthinking the labels.”
Her recent appearance in the dance number ‘Poison Baby’ in the film ‘Thamma’, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, marks her continued presence in the industry. She noted that her performance in the song was about “showing that you can stay relevant and passionate at any stage”.
Reflecting on age and longevity in her career, Malaika stated, “age doesn’t define your capacity to perform or inspire.” She emphasised that experience and ongoing enthusiasm are equally important for an artiste.
Malaika’s views come as conversations about representation and meaning in Bollywood dance numbers persist. She underscored the importance of artistic expression and self-assurance for performers, irrespective of prevailing stereotypes.
Alongside her dance career, Malaika is also a judge on the reality series ‘India’s Got Talent’, sharing the panel with Shaan and Navjot Singh Sidhu. Her continued involvement in entertainment highlights her enduring relevance in the industry. -

Pregnant Katrina’s pics from balcony anger fans, Sonakshi calls it shameful
Star couple Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal have always kept their personal lives private. Every now and then, the actors do share sneak peeks of their real life love story on social media, giving fans a glimpse of their happily ever after. But they prefer keeping their private moments to themselves. For instance, last month when Katrina announced her pregnancy with an adorable polaroid shot of her baby bump and daddy-to-be Vicky, it was their choice. But the soon-to-be mother’s viral pictures from her balcony, which surfaced on the internet this morning, were a clear invasion of privacy. And netizens are angry.
This morning, a media portal took to Instagram to share pictures of pregnant Katrina Kaif in the balcony of her Mumbai residence, ahead of her due date. Along with a string of photographs, a caption read: “Exclusive: Exclusive: Katrina Kaif steps out in her balcony while she nears her delivery date.” This post irked several internet users, with many calling the website out for invading the actor’s privacy by clicking photographs without her consent. Among other netizens was fellow Bollywood star Sonakshi Sinha, who slammed the post by writing: “What is wrong with you’ll????? Photographing a woman in her own home without consent and publishing it on a public platform???? You’ll are nothing less than criminals. Shameful.” The post has now been removed.
In the comment section below, a social media user wrote, “This is a crime! Police should take action on this person who was taking pic and invade someone privacy,” whereas another comment read, “Disgusting act by ****!! They need to face some sort of legal action. Getting papped publicly when one is aware and getting STALKED in their own home is different and it is disgraceful.” An angry fan wrote, “@vickykaushal09 @katrinakaif please take action,” whereas another comment read, “Do u not know this is crime ?”
Recently, Vicky Kaushal opened up about parenthood. During an appearance at the second edition of the Yuvaa Conclave, the actor was asked what he is most looking forward to about becoming a father. Vicky shared, “Just being a dad (laughs). Really looking forward to it. I think, I think it’s a huge blessing and exciting times. Almost there, so fingers crossed. Mujhe lag raha hai main ghar se hi nahi nikalne waala hun.” -

“The music of Cuba’s Carlos Varela feels as timely as ever.” – Los Angeles Times
Known as the “Poet of Havana” or the “Bob Dylan of Cuba”, the immensely popular Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela has dedicated his 30-year music career to expressing “the problems of my people.” His poetic lyrics speak to the promise and pain of Cuba across generations, with complex emotion and powerful imagery. His message has been banned and censored by Cuban authorities, but his songs, like 2000’s ‘Una Palabra,’ continue to resonate around the world. As Carlos explains: “Words can transform. They can reach your soul and your heart. They can shake your bones. They can change your life, and that can’t be lost.”
Special guest Diana Fuentes is a Cuban singer-songwriter known for her sparkling voice and her fusion of pop, R&B and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. She began as a vocalist in Síntesis and Carlos Varela’s band, earning Latin GRAMMY® nominations. She was the first Cuban female artist signed to Sony Music Latin since Celia Cruz, earning two Gold Records and one Platinum Record.
A member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, special guest Jackson Browne has defined a genre of songwriting that is charged with honesty, emotion and personal politics. As influential and enduring as his music is, Browne’s legacy as an advocate for social and environmental justice has been equally central to his career.
Opening the concert is Rodrigo Toscano, an author of 12 books of poetry, dialogist, essayist and labor-environmental activist.

“one of modern jazz’s most innovative musicians” – Glide Magazine
Montclair resident Christian McBride is a nine-time GRAMMY® Award-winning bassist/composer/producer, NJPAC’s Jazz Advisor, Artistic Director of the Montclair Jazz Festival, Board Member and Artistic Chair of Jazz House Kids. He makes his return as a bandleader with his latest project featuring his acclaimed Big Band and several special guest vocalists including: contemporary R&B innovator José James, the unparalleled GRAMMY® Award-winning Ledisi, and Andra Day who won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in the biopic ‘The United States vs. Billie Holiday. ‘
Most of the vocalists appearing on his latest album ‘Without Further Ado,’ Vol. 1 (Mack Avenue Records) have performed with him on the NJPAC stage. As told to WBGO Radio, “The impetus for this recording actually stems from the annual gala at NJPAC. So since 2012, I’ve been NJPAC’s Jazz Advisor and my Big Band has been the house band for the gala ever since. We’ve invited all kinds of great singers to come and sing at those galas. Between the gala and the James Moody Festival, we’ve had Al Jarreau, Dianne Reeves, Jeffrey Osborne, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Lizz Wright, Fantasia, Cynthia Erivo, Philip Bailey, every singer you could possibly think of. Every year I had to write these arrangements for these singers and they only got played once. After more than 10 years, I’m looking at my library and I got this huge pile of big band music that’s only been played once. I thought they shouldn’t go to waste.”

FORMER NJ GUBERNATORIAL HOPEFUL DEFTLY CAPTURES SKILL OF COURTROOM, POLITICS AND COMEDY
-
By Mabel Pais
Law. Politics. Comedy. At first glance, they may seem like very different worlds. But for Jon Bramnick, they come together naturally.
JON BRAMNICK, State Senator and Attorney, knows how to fight while making you laugh! Bramnick’s journey through the courtroom, the Statehouse, and the comedy stage is anything but a joke. He will make you laugh all night long while he performs on the Victoria Theater stage of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), Newark, NJ on November 7, 2025. The performance begins at 7:30 PM. Special guest Vinnie Brand will join him.
Bramnick has been called recently “The Muhammad Ali of Comedian Lawyers,” by NJ.com, a title that captures his rare mix of courtroom skill, political savvy, and comedic timing. With nearly four decades of legal experience and deep roots in New Jersey politics, attorney Jon M. Bramnick (jonbramnick.com), founder of Bramnick Law (jonbramnick.com/firm-overview), isn’t just a seasoned trial lawyer and long-serving state senator but also a comedian.
Born and raised in Plainfield, he’s the “Funniest Lawyer in New Jersey” — a legally binding title bestowed by the State Bar Association. When Jon’s not busy working as a trial lawyer at his Scotch Plains personal injury firm, he’s doing stand-up at comedy clubs from New York City to Florida. He also serves as a New Jersey state senator. In New Jersey’s often bruising political and legal arenas, it’s rare to find a figure who not only knows how to fight, but can make you laugh while doing it.
Bramnick has built a reputation for being quick on his feet, whether he’s addressing a jury, debating on the Senate floor, or handling a heckler at a comedy club in New Brunswick. It’s not every day that you discover a lawyer standing under the spotlight at a gritty comedy club, working a half-full room with jokes about ethics rules and crooked politicians. But for Jon Bramnick, it’s part of a rhythm he’s honed for over 30 years.
Performing regularly at venues like the Stress Factory in New Brunswick, Bramnick brings sharp wit and Jersey-centric humor to the stage. His comedy avoids the typical shock-and-awe punchlines; instead, he leans into clean, observational humor, skewering politics, bureaucracy, and his own profession with equal measure.
“You paid to see a lawyer tell jokes,” he quips. “The good news is I’m not getting paid either.”
The crowd laughs. The tension lifts. And suddenly, the man many recognize from political debates or courtroom victories becomes something even more relatable: human.
But beneath the laughter is a genuine desire to serve. Whether auctioneering for charities, raising money for the Plainfield Symphony, or working to pass meaningful legislation, Bramnick has spent decades building bridges across communities, courtrooms, and party lines.
Jon Bramnick (jonbramnick.com) recently ran for the Republican nomination in New Jersey’s 2025 gubernatorial race, bringing his full personality — lawyer, lawmaker, and comedian—to the campaign trail. Although his bid in the primary concluded, Bramnick remains a visible and active presence across the state. Whether he’s representing clients, speaking at community events, or bringing humor to a packed comedy club, he continues to lead with authenticity, clarity, and connection.
As he put it: “When you do comedy, it has to be instinctual. It has to be part of your personality.” The same could be said for practicing law or representing constituents — it’s about understanding people, reading the room, and responding with empathy and clarity.

JAZZ FEST AIMS TO SHOWCASE JAZZ AS POWERFUL FORCE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
-
By Mabel Pais

Christian McBride. (Credit: Evelyn Freja) The 14th Annual TD JAMES MOODY FESTIVAL, presented by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and co-curated by NJPAC’s Jazz Advisor CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE, will take place November 8-23, 2025. It aims to showcase jazz as a powerful cultural force for social justice.
From groundbreaking jazz masters Arturo Sandoval and Stanley Clarke to the censored “Poet of Havana” singer-songwriter Carlos Varela and hip-hop stars Chuck D, Rakim and Slick Rick baring their souls in the annual Represent! show, this year’s Festival is rooted in jazz history. Presented at various accessible locations throughout Newark, the citywide Festival offers a diverse program of several acts fusing jazz with poetry, spoken word, dance, blues, pop, African-Caribbean music, and more — making it a destination for all arts lovers. New for this year, eligible TD Bank cardholders will receive special perks at the TD James Moody Jazz Festival.
NJPAC President and CEO, John Schreiber explains “Jazz has always been an art form that’s strengthened by artists collaborating, crossing boundaries, finding new inspiration in the counterpoint of different rhythms coming together. You’ll hear that in almost every show at the ’TD James Moody Jazz Festival’ this year, and especially in this year’s ’Represent!’ concert that will bring together leading voices in hip hop, jazz and spoken word poetry.”
Christian McBride, TD James Moody Jazz Festival Advisor and multiple GRAMMY® Award-Winning Jazz Bassist, said “This is going to be another all-star, can’t-miss ’TD James Moody Jazz Festival.’ I can’t wait to groove with my Big Band and the incredible vocalists Andra Day, José James and Ledisi. But as always, I’m proud that we’ve put together a festival that has something for everyone: You’ll hear inspiring words from Dodge Poets, witness the tap dance magic of Savion Glover, hear Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive sing new tunes inspired by the music of the 1940s with her friend Vilray, and move to Cuban rhythms from Carlos Varela, Diana Fuentes, Arturo Sandoval and Omar Sosa. Plus, we’ll welcome two legendary players — my fellow bassist Stanley Clarke, and guitarist Stanley Jordan — to the NJPAC stage this season. This is a rare treat, and I know fans will be looking forward to their appearances as much as I am. Our goal with the ’Moody’ festival is to ensure you’ll always hear some of your favorites — and always discover new music to fall in love with.”
Martin Melilli, TD Bank Commercial Market President explains,“TD Bank has been an active supporter of the festival since it began, sponsoring free community performances and educational events, as well as mainstage concerts showcasing jazz superstars. We are very proud to continue our relationship with NJPAC and the TD James Moody Jazz Festival as they work to educate and inspire through jazz. At TD, we believe music and the arts are a universal language we all speak, and they both have a special way of inspiring positive change and connecting diverse communities.”

CELEBRATE THE LEGACY OF 50 YEARS OF ‘AIR SUPPLY’
- By Mabel Pais
Celebrate the love. Celebrate the legacy. Celebrate 50 years of AIR SUPPLY!
Enjoy an unforgettable evening of timeless hits and heartfelt memories welcoming AIR SUPPLY for a special 50th anniversary concert at The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on Sunday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m.
Since 1975, Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock have captured hearts around the world with their soaring harmonies and romantic anthems, such as ‘Lost in Love,’ ‘All Out of Love,’ ‘Every Woman in the World,’ and ‘The One That You Love.’
A pedestrian on 57th Street sees a musician getting out of a cab and asks, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” Without pause, the artist replies, “Practice!” In fact, Air Supply celebrated their 50th Anniversary with a performance at Carnegie Hall on May, 13, 2025.
If it’s true that practice makes perfect, then Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock – beloved by their millions of fans across the planet as Air Supply – have had nearly half a century to hone their skills, harness their passion and unleash the beautifully intimate yet rockin’ romantic energy of those instantly identifiable 80s hits that made them global superstars.
As they close in on 50 years (exact date, May 12, 1975) since they met in the chorus of the Australian touring company of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar,’ the duo is ever-present on the road in North America and overseas to the tune of 130 dates a year. This run includes being the first Western group to tour China and several other countries who prior to their breakthrough would not allow pop music across their borders, as well as performing for a record 175,000 people in Cuba in 2005.
Five decades later, Air Supply is still going strong — and they’re bringing their legendary sound to NJPAC for one incredible night.

EXPERIENCE THE FUSION OF POP’S QUEEN WITH CLASSICAL MUSIC’S KING
- By Mabel Pais
The newest fusion production by Steve Hackman combines pop’s Queen with classical music’s King!
Experience the thrill of Steve Hackman’s fusion of Beethoven X Beyoncé at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, its northeast premiere on October 24, 2025 at 7:30 p.m.
The newest fusion production by Steve Hackman celebrates and elevates all things woman by combining pop’s Queen with classical music’s King: Beethoven and Beyoncé.
Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, the symphonic repertoire’s most joyful and exuberant celebration of dance, is the canvas onto which fifteen of Beyoncé’s most popular songs across her entire catalog are interwoven, including “Girls,” ‘Crazy in Love,’ ‘Sorry,’ ‘Cuff It,’ ‘Single Ladies,’ and ‘Texas Hold ‘Em.’ The production’s emotional peak is when two of the most recognizable melodies from each composer are intertwined: ‘Halo’ and the hauntingly beautiful second movement of Beethoven.
Three powerhouse female soloists, as well as a guest drummer, guitarist/keyboardist, and bassist, join the orchestra for a night of musical magic.

Director Andrew Harmon explains the film – youtu.be/ZZ-GmoKrASc.
Author John Bolin
Author John Bolin created the show over 25 years ago to convey the meaning of Christ’s sacrificial death to a group of young people who knew little about the story of Jesus’ suffering but were familiar with pain through their own practice of cutting and self-harm.
The show has evolved ever since, with the current live version returning to the original format featuring St. John, “the beloved disciple,” recalling his many amazing encounters with Jesus.
“It’s a story full of love, sacrifice, spiritual warfare, and redemption,” said Bolin.
Watch the video – youtu.be/gpHlqQytqTE.
Meet “The Thorn” Creators:
‘The Thorn’ creator John Bolin, says God called him: “to tell stories on the page, stage, and screen,” an assignment he has now completed with the film version of ‘The Thorn.’ His books include novels (‘The Eden Project’) and Christian growth guides (‘So Loved,’ ‘The Two Doors of Heaven,’ and ‘Life Unlimited’).
John’s wife, Sarah Bolin helped create the show and is the Executive Producer, managing the show’s national touring troupes. When asked about why she tours and has participated in ‘The Thorn’ for so long, Sarah said, “God asked us to trust him and open our hands, and he promised to make something beautiful happen.” Over the years, Sarah has been witness to seeing God move in tangible ways across audience and cast members alike.
Jesus Trending
Although polls show that U.S. church attendance is declining, interest in Jesus is growing. ‘The Chosen,’ the popular streaming series about Jesus, has racked up over 400 million episode views.
“As I first saw with my students 25 years ago, people who may have jaundiced views of Christians or churches are more open to learning about who the real Jesus was, how he lived, and what he taught,” said Bolin.
While previous incarnations of ‘The Thorn’ live show have been performed mostly at churches, the new touring model makes the show available to everyone at mainstream performing arts venues and arenas.
“Jesus believes in accessibility,” said Bolin. “He wants everyone to have access to the ultimate story of love and hope. That’s why he came to earth in the first place.”

WORLD FOOD MOVEMENT INAUGURATES ITS FEEDING MISSION IN THE USA
-
By Mabel Pais
The World Food Movement (WFM), established to provide food assistance to students and communities in the United States of America, held its launch on September 28, 2025 at the Victoria Theatre of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, New Jersey. This initiative is inspired by The Akshaya Patra Foundation, the world’s largest NGO-run school lunch program serving fresh, nutritious meals to millions of children every day.
WFM will focus on addressing hunger and food insecurity among students and communities across the United States of America. It has commenced feeding in prominent areas like the Bay Area (California), New York and New Jersey. The organization will extend its reach to Boston, Washington, D.C, Seattle and other locations to benefit more communities. Earlier this year, WFM served over 7000 meals with a goal of serving 100,000 meals annually by 2027.

Honored Guests – left to right: Dr. Patricia Ramsey; Consul General of New York, Shri Binaya Srikanta Pradhan; WFM Founder Shri Chanchalapati Dasa; NJ Assemblyman Sterley S. Stanley. The vision behind this movement began in 1966 when Srila Prabhupada (founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness – ISKCON) – arrived in America, and personally cooked and fed sumptuous meals to youth in New York. Those humble beginnings sowed the seeds of an inspiring legacy of compassion that the WFM carries forward today.
WFM is led by Sri Madhu Pandit Dasa and Sri Chanchalapathi Dasa, founders of The Akshaya Patra Foundation in India. The team will leverage the learning and expertise gained from over 25 years of feeding experience in its projects and initiatives.
HONORED GUEST-ATTENDEES
The launch was attended by Shri Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York; Dr. Patricia Ramsey, President of Medgar Evers College; and several dignitaries from across the US. Sri Chanchalapathi Dasa, Co-founder and Vice Chairman, World Food Movement, presided over the event.
The Honorable Mayor of Newark Ras J. Baraka, awarded a citation on the occasion, congratulating the World Food Movement and said that the organization will be a major power to address food insecurity and empower students and communities.
SPEAKER / ENTERTAINMENT CONTRIBUTORS
Abby V, an internationally acclaimed singer extended his support for the occasion, by rendering scintillating entertainment, blending classical and contemporary music styles.
Persistent Foundation US (persistentsystems.com), the US Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of Persistent Systems, a global Digital Engineering and Enterprise Modernization leader, contributed to the initiative. The Wealth Planning Advisory Group (wealthplanning.com), a financial planning firm, partnered in organizing the event.

Abby V performs at NJPAC. Shri Binaya Srikanta Pradhan expressed his appreciation and said, “World Food Movement is a wonderful initiative, inspired by Srila Prabhupada’s vision of a hunger-free world, that will benefit communities across the United States. For the last 18 months, I have watched its founders shape a movement of dignity. Just listening to a food-insecure Harlem beneficiary say ‘This meal is my breakfast, lunch and dinner’ was moving and shows me the impact this program is having. Helping young people in this way is what the Indian ethic of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the world is one family, is all about. I have no doubt one million meals is a goal that will be met before 2030.”
Shri Madhu Pandit Dasa said, “I am happy that (the) World Food Movement has been officially launched today to work towards a common goal, alleviating hunger and enhancing food and nutrition security in America. We will dedicate all our energies and resources to serve the people in this country, targeting a life of dignity, good health and happiness. I invite everyone to join us in our mission to build a hunger-free world.”
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Chanchalapathi Dasa said, “I extend my gratitude to everyone present at the inaugural event of (the) World Food Movement. I wholeheartedly thank all our partners and well-wishers for making the event a success. We look forward to working with the government, college and university administrations, donors and all other stakeholders to serve the people of America. I am confident that with your support and encouragement, we can work towards fulfilling our vision that no one should go hungry.”
From the NJ Statehouse, Assemblyman Stanley of New Jersey’s 18th District released a joint resolution commending the World Food Movement. He said, “The program is already transforming lives on campuses across the state. It unites diverse communities.” He added that he wanted the next generation of students to participate in giving to those less fortunate, since learning to give back is as important as nourishing the body.
Thanking the World Food Movement, Dr. Patricia Ramsey, President of Medgar Evers College, said, “People think of college students as living in luxury, but the reality is many are struggling just to eat. I myself know what it is like to stand in an Ivy League (a group of long-established colleges and universities in the eastern US having high academic and social prestige. It includes Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania) dorm with only five dollars in my pocket. No person deserves to go hungry. Providing fresh food is part of ensuring dignity and academic success.”
Sonali Deshpande, Chairperson of Persistent Foundation, said, “It is an honor for Persistent Foundation US to partner with (the) World Food Movement in their mission to ensure access to nutritious meals for students and communities. This collaboration aligns with our commitment to supporting education, community development, and sustainability, underscoring the importance of creating a healthier, more resilient society.”
A few beneficiaries of the World Food Movement also attended the launch event.
Fatima, a single mother from Medgar Evers, expressed her gratitude for the organization’s initiative and said that fresh, nutritious meals will help her stay focused on her education. Alia, another beneficiary, described the challenges students face every day and expressed her gratitude to the World Food Movement for providing healthy, delicious meals. She said that this initiative lifts the burden off students and gives them the strength to achieve their goals.

The World Food Movement is a not-for-profit organization established in the United States of America in 2025 to serve the people of this country. This organization is being led by Sri Madhu Pandit Dasa and Sri Chanchalapathi Dasa, the founders of The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which is the world’s largest NGO-run school lunch program.
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), envisioned a world where no one ever goes hungry. The World Food Movement is an initiative in pursuance of his great desire to feed people extensively.
Replicability and scalability are two vital attributes of Akshaya Patra’s feeding programs. Its successful models will be replicated in the World Food Movement to serve the best quality of food to people. Kitchens are the heart of their feeding mission. State-of-the-art technology is used for cooking while maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness in the kitchens. Rigorous processes and systems are followed to ensure food safety and quality.
The World Food Movement’s infrastructure and resources will also be used to undertake food relief efforts during emergencies, wherever necessary. The team will utilize the learning and expertise gathered from its feeding experience over the last 25 years in World Food Movement’s projects and initiatives. The Board and Leadership are committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, good governance, and stakeholder satisfaction.

The Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC) will hold its annual gala honoring Jyoti Menon and Deepak Raj in its Historic First on October 26, 2025.
JYOTI MENON, Vice President at Bread Financial and Trustee of Barnard College, and DEEPAK RAJ, Chairman of the India Philanthropy Alliance, are honorees at the 2025 IAAC Gala in a historic first for the organization. These two trailblazers will be celebrated together for their extraordinary contributions to finance, philanthropy, and the Indian-American community. The gala will take place on Sunday, October 26, 2025, from 5:00 PM onwards at the Union League Club, New York City.
The IAAC Gala is the organization’s premier annual fundraiser, bringing together leaders, philanthropists, artists, and community members to celebrate creativity, connection, and cultural excellence. Proceeds directly support IAAC’s year-round programming across film, dance, literature, and music, empowering artists and showcasing the rich diversity of Indian arts and culture.

DEEPAK RAJ
Deepak Raj is a trailblazer in both finance and philanthropy. After a distinguished 24-year career at Merrill Lynch, where he served as Director of Global Equity Research, he founded the Raj Family Foundation to advance causes impacting India and Indian-Americans. A well-known philanthropist, he has served in leadership roles with organizations including Pratham USA and is the co-Founder of Indian-American Impact. In 2015, he and his wife Neera established the Deepak and Neera Raj Center on Indian Economic Policies at Columbia University. He is also Managing Director of Raj Associates, Chairman of the New Jersey State Investment Council, and a recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Kanpur.
“Deepak Raj represents the very best of what it means to give back to one’s community,” said Chairman Dr. Nirmal Mattoo. “His transition from Wall Street success to philanthropic leadership demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to lifting others and strengthening the bonds between India and America. Through his work with the India Philanthropy Alliance and countless other organizations, he has created pathways for future generations to thrive.”
Musical Performance This year’s gala will feature a special performance by musicians from the Grammy-nominated Berklee India Exchange, known for their groundbreaking cross-cultural collaborations that bridge Indian classical traditions with contemporary global music. Their uplifting, innovative performance will set the tone for an unforgettable evening of community and celebration.

HSDFF Executive Director, Ken Jacobson, said, “In a world that seems, at times, on the verge of spinning out of control, I marvel at the fact that something as simple as a gathering of people to watch documentary films on a big screen can feel as miraculous and urgent as it does this year. For 34 years, the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival has brought the best in non-fiction filmmaking to Hot Springs. Our community has responded by welcoming filmmakers and other guests here to join with us in celebrating this remarkable art form. This year, I am struck by the sheer quality and dynamism of the filmmaking, the courage of those willing to share their lives with the filmmakers, and the emotional depths explored through these incredibly diverse stories. If this year’s festival lineup tells us anything, it’s that creativity and truth-telling still remain as vital as ever. From our Opening to our Closing Night and everything in between, I know that our audiences are in for a very special and unique experience.”
Highlights
ADDITIONAL / SPECIAL EVENTS
Marking Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 13th, the festival features a stellar lineup of documentaries that celebrate Native and Indigenous stories and storytellers: ‘Powwow People,’ ‘Remaining Native,’ ‘Drowned Land’ and ‘Yanuni.’
National Park College (NPC) and Hot Springs Village Shorts Programs
For the first time, HSDFF is expanding its program to the National Park College in Hot Springs for a specially curated package of short films intended to build connections between the festival and the NPC community. For the second year in a row, HSDFF brings its documentary programming to nearby Hot Springs Village for a curated shorts program.
The Emerging Filmmakers Program, a long-standing partnership between HSDFF and Arkansas PBS, is one of HSDFF’s most cherished educational initiatives. This full-day experience welcomes middle and high school students from throughout the region to engage in thought-provoking screenings, interactive Q&A sessions, and hands-on workshops. Designed to immerse young storytellers in the craft of documentary filmmaking, the program features guidance from award-winning filmmakers and top industry professionals. Since its inception, the program has welcomed hundreds of students from more than 30 schools.
The Brent Renaud Mentorship Program is presented in partnership with Arkansas PBS. Working filmmakers join Peabody Award-winner Craig Renaud to offer a behind-the-scenes look at their creative processes and share practical guidance for building a sustainable career in filmmaking. This unique opportunity allows participants to gain an insider’s perspective on the art and craft of documentary filmmaking.
THE FILMMAKER FORUM
Now in its third year, the HSDFF Filmmaker Forum is a three-day filmmaker/industry conference and convening to be held October 12 – 14 during this year’s Festival. In this unprecedented year, in which federal government funding has been stripped from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and public media, there is no more urgent time for filmmakers and industry leaders to meet, discuss and raise critical questions about where the documentary field stands and where to go from here. The Forum offers dynamic programming focused on the art, craft and business of documentary storytelling with a focus on public media, and a wider lens on the nonfiction ecosystem as a whole.
