  • Angelina Jolie again ‘losing one of her’ children as her battle with Brad Pitt continues

Angelina Jolie again ‘losing one of her’ children as her battle with Brad Pitt continues

Angelina Jolie is “quickly losing her kids one by one” as her 18-year-old daughter, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie, prepares to leave home and pursue dance.
RadarOnline cited that the actress finds it difficult to cope with the prospect of her most “private” children moving out, as her ongoing legal disputes with ex-husband Brad Pitt over a French winery continue to add stress to her life.
“It’s all happening so quickly,” a source close to the family told Radar Online. “One by one, her kids are moving out, and no matter how natural it is in the cycle of life, it’s just very hard for Angelina to come to terms with.”
Shiloh intends to live with friends while pursuing her passion for dance. “It’s especially nerve-racking for Ange to send Shiloh into the world because she wants to pursue dance, and it’s not a traditional career path. She wants to live with friends while she studies dance, which means she won’t be on a university campus with all the protections that come with living in a dorm,” they explained.
“She’s proud of Shiloh and would never hold her back from her dreams,” the source continued. “Still, it won’t be easy for her to let go.”
Having moved out at just 16, the Maleficent star “sees a lot of herself in Shiloh, who can be quite a free spirit, so the idea of her being out on her own in the world is pretty terrifying. She just can’t help but worry about what sort of trouble she could get into,” the insider shared.
Shiloh has also legally dropped her father’s last name, ‘Pitt’ earlier this year. This decision reportedly left Pitt feeling deeply hurt. “They used to have a good relationship, but that’s in the past, and it breaks his heart,” a source told Page Six earlier. “Brad feels like Angelina has turned his kids against him. He feels like Angelina knows exactly what she’s doing.”
Jolie and Pitt, who officially divorced in 2019, share six children: Maddox, 23; Pax, 21; Zahara, 19; Shiloh, 18; and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16.

Ananya Panday calls Deepika Padukone her inspiration

Ananya Panday recently opened up during an event on her experience of working with Deepika Padukone on Gehraiyaan and showered praises on her co-star. She revealed that it was Deepika who inspired her to stand up for herself. Looking back on their time working on the Shakun Batra relationship drama, Ananya shared that Deepika showed her the way on how to speak her mind in a more confident and assured, but polite way.
“When I started out in the industry, I didn’t really know that one could really stand up and reinforce what they want. I used to simply do what I was asked to do. Deepika is a woman who stands up for every person on the set, in a very polite way,” she said.
The CTRL actress further added, “Whenever a girl speaks up she is called bossy, or difficult to work with, but she used to convey her needs in a very polite and empathetic way, which made me realise that there is a way in which you can do this.”
Ananya regarded the experience of working with Deepika as an empowering one, which instilled the value of choosing more consciously in her. “Deepika inspired me as a younger female actress to go on further to make a change. Now I do speak up when I am not comfortable doing certain things or saying certain things, because I don’t want a young girl to be spoken to in a certain manner because I am being shown like that on-screen,” she remarked.
On the work front, Ananya Panday’s recent OTT successes include Call Me Bae, an eight-episode comedy-drama which released on Amazon Prime Video in September, and the Netflix original, CTRL, a sci-fi thriller directed by Vikramaditya Motwane.

  • ROCK BAND PARTNERS WITH TEXAS BASED NGO FOR HURRICANE HELENE’S SEVERELY DEVASTATED AREAS

ROCK BAND PARTNERS WITH TEXAS BASED NGO FOR HURRICANE HELENE’S SEVERELY DEVASTATED AREAS

    • By Mabel Pais

JET BLACK ROSES, the country rock band, releases their new song, ‘Carolina Blue,’ which was written and recorded within the first two weeks following Hurricane Helene’s devastation of the North Carolina mountains. This project is in partnership with OPERATION AIRDROP.

This song aims to raise awareness and encourage support for ongoing relief efforts and the rebuilding process in the region. To help, consider purchasing a Carolina Blue T-shirt, 100% will go to Operation Air Drop or donate directly to Operation Airdrop at operarationairdrop.betterworld.org.

All proceeds from ‘Carolina Blue’ song sales and related merchandise will be donated to Operation Airdrop, an organization that provides relief in areas affected by natural disasters. The band’s hearts are with the people of Western North Carolina, and they want to ensure that these communities are not forgotten.

‘Jet Black Roses’ has partnered with ‘Operation AirDrop’ for relief efforts to help those affected by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina. The country rock band, which features North Carolina native Tyler Cates on lead guitar, is running a donation drive in cooperation with ‘Operation AirDrop,’ a non-profit that organizes aviation and ground transportation assets after a natural disaster.

    DONATION SUPPORT

‘Jet Black Roses’ is asking the public to visit their website and purchase a Carolina Blue T-shirt where 100% of the funds go to ‘Operation Air Drop’ or for those in Georgia to donate essential supplies. The requested items are non-perishable food, baby needs, flashlights, batteries, paper towels, first aid kits, new socks and underwear, cleaning supplies, buckets, cooling towels, granola bars, and energy bars. The donations will significantly help the battered areas of North Carolina, which Hurricane Helene hardest hit.

Goods can be dropped off at area businesses in Atlanta and Calhoun, GA. The immediate mission is to fill a semi-truck that ‘Operation Airdrop’ will deliver to on-the-ground organizations in North Carolina as soon as possible.

Drop-off locations include Bellwood Coffee (Riverside location and East Atlanta Village (EAV) locations) Frazie’s Meat & Market in Atlanta, and the Voluntary Action Center in Calhoun, GA. In addition there will be ongoing missions. Follow @jetblackrosesoffical for dates.

Band member Tyler Cates is from North Carolina and spent the better part of the 2000s in the mountains while in college. Western NC holds an extraordinary place in his heart: he met my wife there, along with many dear friends, and had many experiences that helped form who he is and set him on the path of music.

He’s devastated by what transpired with Helene and its aftermath; for this reason, his bandmates Trey and Andrew Bentley decided to figure out a unique way to contribute to the relief effort.

Tyler Cates explains, “I am excited that we partnered with Operation AirDrop to provide support and much-needed supplies for the hardest hit areas in western  North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Our donation drive launches this week, and we will gather goods in Atlanta and Calhoun, GA, to send directly to Operation AirDrop’s NC base in Spruce Pine via transfer truck. We’re also personally loading planes with generators, first aid kits, and other things that will help the people in affected communities.”

‘Jet Black Roses’ hearts and minds are with everyone affected. ‘Jet Black Roses’ are deeply grateful for the support. Those who are unable to drop off items can still make a significant difference by making a monetary donation at operarationairdrop.betterworld.org

    Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by activist and author Maulana Karenga to offer people of African heritage a holiday that would celebrate their culture. Kwanzaa encompasses seven days dedicated to seven principles, also known as the Nguzo Saba. The Kwanzaa principles are Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith). Each activity or event at NJPAC’s Kwanzaa Family Festival embodies one of the seven principles.

Selena Gomez opens up about ‘isolating’ Hollywood

On December 9, Selena Gomez, the breakout star of The Emilia Perez Star, received a prestigious Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, a recognition that marks a significant milestone in her career. Just a day later, she attended the Academy Women’s Luncheon Presented by Chanel alongside Ariana Grande. The singer told People Magazine, “I’m overwhelmed, very, very honoured and grateful.”

During her keynote speech, Gomez highlighted, “I know firsthand how isolating this industry will feel at times, but moments like this and rooms like this, and talking to all these amazing women just reminds me that I’m not alone, and we aren’t alone.” She then gestured towards her table of supporters which included Grande, Amy Adams, Pamela Anderson, Awkwafina, Gal Gadot, Rita Wilson, Mila Kunis and Olivia Wilde.

Gomez shared on the red carpet that she focuses on small positive things amid the chaos of negativity. She told People Magazine, “It’s humour for me. I know people say it’s a defence mechanism, however, I think it’s a great distraction from all of the noise sometimes. And just to have a laugh with your friends or do something that can bring you a little bit of light.”

For others who might feel lonely in Hollywood, the Same Old Love singer offered her help. She said, “To the young women watching us, I just want you to know that you are heard and you are seen, and your perspective matters deeply. And if you ever feel lonely at any event, I’m usually on my phone, playing some sort of weird game. Just come up to me, and I’ll be happy to chat.”

She added, “When we share and we stand together, we create a ripple effect that stretches far beyond our own lives. That’s why events like [this] are so important, they’re a celebration of our collective achievements, but they’re also a reminder of the work we still have to do.”

  • Chris Evans to return as Captain America in Avengers Doomsday: Report

Chris Evans to return as Captain America in Avengers Doomsday: Report

Chris Evans is set to reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to an exclusive report from The Wrap. The actor will apparently feature in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo Brothers. Robert Downey Jr is also confirmed to join the cast, taking on the role of Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. Neither Marvel Studios, Evans, nor his representatives have provided official statements regarding the news.

The Russo Brothers, who have previously worked with Evans and Downey Jr on Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, will return to direct Avengers: Doomsday as well as its direct sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.

The new Marvel feature project deals with multiple timelines and universes and is expected to reunite many actors from previous and current films. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.

They have dropped hints that the films will be connected to the two-part story of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. That sets the stage for more reunions which might include Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to premiere on May 1, 2026, with Secret Wars expected to land on May 7, 2027.

Chris retired from MCU in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame which showed Captain America had aged into an old man and passed the character’s patriotic shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

  • Churning in Hindi cinema forcing filmmakers to think differently: Manoj Bajpayee

Churning in Hindi cinema forcing filmmakers to think differently: Manoj Bajpayee

Hindi cinema is going through a lull phase but this churning will, hopefully, lead to something better as creative people always find a way, says actor Manoj Bajpayee. In a year where the box office once again appears to be dominated by blockbusters from the South like “Kalki 2898 AD” and “Pushpa 2: The Rule”, the successful business of “Stree 2”, “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3”, and “Singham Again” has given some hope to Bollywood. Asked whether Hindi cinema was in “trouble”, Bajpayee said that isn’t the case.

“… But it is definitely forcing filmmakers to think differently. And there is nothing wrong with it. I think it is a churning, it’s a lull period. I’m hopeful that it will go back to its natural self very soon.

“I don’t see it as a problem because creative people always find a way. It is a jolt, a shock. And, now they are thinking hard and trying to come together to find a solution to it. And they will find a solution,” the actor told PTI in an interview during a visit to the news agency’s headquarters. Bajpayee said horror comedy “Stree 2”, which earned over ?800 crore at the box office, did “remarkable” business.

“That means people are somewhere willing to go to theatres but they want something else. And that ‘something else’, a filmmaker has to really innovate and think hard about… My films these days come onto OTT and they have an even bigger audience.

    MODERATOR

John Schreiber, President and CEO – NJPAC

John quips about himself, “I fell in love with the theater and I thought, I don’t know how, but I want to be part of that.”

“I grew up in Queens, and I lived at the last stop on the subway. Starting at the age of nine, my parents let me take the subway into the city, and they gave me $5, and I could buy a seat in the balcony at a Broadway show. I have memories of seeing Carol Channing in ‘Hello Dolly,’ Angela Lansbury in ‘Mame,’ Linda Lavin in ‘It’s a Bird,’ ‘It’s a Plane,’ ‘It’s Superman.’ And I fell in love with the theater and with what it felt like to be transported into another world. I thought that was the greatest.”

“And I thought, ‘I don’t know how, but I want to do that.’ I want to be part of that.’ When I went to college, I ran a concert series, and I started a summer theater. And I just knew that I needed to be in this universe somehow. I went to work for George Wein, who was the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival. I’ve been doing this sort of thing in music and theater and television and festivals ever since. And it’s been a glorious ride.”

“I’m especially proud that Savion Glover has become such an engaged and active part of our family here. Savion has this amazing ability to connect and inspire young people, give them a sense of confidence in themselves, a feeling of ownership of the development of the work they’re doing. A few summers ago, he directed and choreographed a new production of ‘The Tap Dance Kid,’ which he starred in when he was 11 on Broadway. It’s one thing to be a genius, another thing to be kind. To combine those two things in service of young people’s growth is very moving to me.”

Ritual4Return (R4R) is a 12-week homecoming project for citizens returning to the community after incarceration. R4R uses theater, mindfulness practices, drumming, movement, mask-making and storytelling to support individuals in addressing and overcoming the dehumanizing effects of incarceration.

On December 8, participants will enact the theatrical rite of passage they created together to formally mark the transition from prison back to their communities and into a new chapter of their lives.

What is a ‘Rite of Passage?’

‘A rite of passage’ is a specific type of ritual meant to support a person’s transition from one identity within the community, to another. These transitions can elevate or degrade. When a person is convicted of a crime and sentenced to prison, they undergo a powerful rite of passage. It is a rite of degradation. People are downgraded from the status of “citizen” to the status of “convict,” “prisoner” or “outcast.”

But words like convict and prisoner are more than just legal labels. They become new social identities. They stick to a person. Too often, the broader public defines people by the crimes they’ve committed, and formerly incarcerated men and women can carry feelings of shame and stigma for many years after they are released from prison. Often these feelings last the rest of their lives.

Drawing from more than five decades of literature that point to the power of ritual and rites of passage as tools for helping to welcome people back into society after incarceration, Ritual4Return (R4R) begins with the organizing concept that those closest to the problem are closest to the solution, and ends with a premise — articulated by criminologist Jeremy Travis — that to confront the many crises associated with mass incarceration, we must “close the gap between ‘us’ and them’.”

R4R is a semester-long course through which returning citizens engage with and explore the many aspects of their own experiences getting into, through, and out of prison. Reading from a wide variety of source materials and then trying to understand them through dialogue, writing, movement exercises, and theatrical devising techniques, participants will explore — individually and collectively — themes like Home, Sin, Judgement, Punishment, Exile, Bondage, Trauma, Grief, Freedom, Repair, Forgiveness, Justice, and Homecoming.

The process culminates with a one-time-only public ritual marking and celebrating the end of incarceration and the beginning of an individual’s new identity within the community. This rite of passage is the centerpiece of a one-day gathering that aims to extend the conversation to family members, loved ones, and other community stakeholders who care about the impacts of incarceration.

This Project’s goal, broadly, is to change the narrative around those who have been incarcerated and who are working to lead positive lives after their release. But as a community who has had their story told for them and about them, they must fight, first, to better understand their own stories. Then they must learn how to tell them. Ritual4Return opens a public space to tell their stories, and to position them as catalysts for deeper dialogue between people — “us” and “them” — who often don’t see themselves in the other.

If you or someone you know is ready to tell their own story and announce the next chapter of their life, reach out to find out how to join the next cohort!

  • Julia Robert felt Notting Hill sequel was ‘a very poor idea’

Julia Robert felt Notting Hill sequel was ‘a very poor idea’

Days after Hugh Grant called his memorable Notting Hill character “despicable,” we’ve learnt that his co-star Julia Roberts dismissed the writer’s pitch for a sequel. In an interview with IndieWire, Notting Hill writer Richard Curtis revealed how Julia reacted when he approached her for a sequel to their 1999 cult romantic comedy.
“I tried doing one with ‘Notting Hill’ where they were going to get divorced and Julia [Roberts] thought that was a very poor idea,” revealed Richard. The story of Notting Hill, written by Richard and directed by Roger Michell, revolved around ace American actor Anna Scott (Julia), who falls for bookstore owner William Thacker (Hugh) during her visit to Notting Hill, London. Initially overwhelmed by the paparazzi’s obsession with their budding romance, William aka Will eventually confesses his love to a disappointed Anna at a press conference before she leaves for the US. Notting Hill is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
A couple of weeks ago, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Hugh Grant also cringed at his character of Will from Notting Hill. “Whenever I’m flicking the channels at home after a few drinks and this comes up, I just think, ‘Why doesn’t my character have any balls?’” He said. “There’s a scene in this film where she’s in my house and the paps (paparazzi) come to the front door and ring the bell and I think I just let her go past me and open the door. That’s awful,” Hugh added.
Even Richard has flagged his dissatisfaction with Notting Hill and other popular romantic comedies like Love Actually (2003) and Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) that he wrote for the lack of diversity in them. “I came from a very un-diverse school and a bunch of university friends. With Notting Hill, I think that I hung on to the diversity issue, to the feeling that I wouldn’t know how to write those parts. And I think I was just sort of stupid and wrong about that. I feel as though me, my casting director, my producers just didn’t think about it. Just didn’t look outwards enough,” he said at the Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival last year, as reported by Today.

NEW JERSEY SYMPHONY PRESENTS A MUPPET FILM CONCERT FOR CHRISTMAS

    By Mabel Pais

The New Jersey Symphony will present Disney’s ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ in Concert featuring a screening of the complete film while the musical score is performed live by the orchestra. The film concert takes place at several locations, December 5-8, 2024.

    STORY

The Muppets perform Charles Dickens’ classic holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Gonzo, as Dickens, narrates the story with the help of Rizzo the Rat. The film also features Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit, Fozzie Bear as Fozziwig and Robin the Frog as Tiny Tim.

When the grumpy Scrooge receives Christmas Eve visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, they show him the error of his self-serving ways. Though the miserable old man seems beyond any hope of redemption and happiness, the kind and humble Bob Cratchit, his family and the Spirits open Scrooge’s eyes—and his heart—to the true meaning of Christmas.

The original score was composed by Miles Goodman (‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,’ ‘Little Shop of Horrors’) with songs by Oscar®, Emmy and GRAMMY-winning songwriter Paul Williams (‘Rainbow Connection,’ ‘Evergreen’).

    PROGRAM

Disney’s The Muppet Christmas Carol in Concert is presented by the New Jersey Symphony, conducted by Constantine Kitsopoulos.

SETON HALL UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES RETURN OF NEW CHAPTER: INVESTITURE OF PRIEST-PRESIDENT

(Left to Right): Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin; Monsignor Joseph R. Reilly; Hank D’Alessandro (Credit: shu.edu)
    • By Mabel Pais

The Seton Hall University community, together with community and government officials and representatives from colleges and universities across the nation, gathered on November 4, 2024, for a mass and ceremony to mark the investiture of Monsignor Joseph R. Reilly, S.T.L., Ph.D., as the University’s twenty-second president. Monsignor Reilly’s appointment marks the return of a priest-president to Seton Hall, which has been a hallmark of the University for 146 years of its 168-year history.

“To say Monsignor Reilly understands our mission is an understatement. It is inseparable from who he is,” said Hank D’Alessandro, ’85, chair of the Board of Regents, who presided over the investiture ceremony. “He continues the tradition of the priest-president, a role he will use to instill hope and advance success for our entire community.”

In his investiture address, Monsignor Reilly said, “Half of my life has been spent here. [Seton Hall] is a place of encounter, of education, of enrichment, of empathy, edification and equity. It was here, in this place, where I discovered the passion and purpose for my life as a priest. But it is not simply a place of three campuses. Seton Hall is a community of people, with fundamental beliefs about God, the human person, the world and the values that underlie all of those things that are founded in faith. This is what sustains each one of us in our lives here at Seton Hall.”

“My deep desire as I begin my service as a priest-president here at Seton Hall is that I would like to be able, like Jesus Christ, to make a gift of myself in service to the community,” added Monsignor Reilly.

His Eminence, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., chair of Seton Hall’s Board of Trustees, president of the Board of Regents and Archbishop of Newark, served as Celebrant and Homilist at the investiture mass and addressed the investiture ceremony. “Monsignor Reilly’s selection as Seton Hall’s leader follows decades of devoted service to the University and its students, and through them, to the world. I am confident his presidency will produce even more remarkable achievements.” Watch this short video youtu.be/-yhWxiRwc5Y.

The ceremony culminated a week-long celebration of investiture-related events, including an academic symposium, “The Story of Catholic Education: Renewing Our Universities,” a Student Leaders Luncheon and a gathering with alumni and families during Homecoming and Family Weekend. Watch the entire investiture ceremony at youtube.com/watch?v=3VJ9sD-BOB0.

    THE PRESIDENT

Monsignor Joseph R. Reilly, S.T.L., Ph.D., began his tenure as the University’s 22nd president on July 1, 2024. He brings to the presidency a deep understanding of Seton Hall’s identity as a leading Catholic university and a robust vision to elevate its standing among the leading institutions in American higher education.

A Mountainside, N.J., native, Monsignor Reilly attended Seton Hall Prep and graduated from the University in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark in 1991 and then served as a parochial vicar at St. Paul in Ramsey and St. Andrew in Bayonne.

In 1995, he joined the staff of Seton Hall Prep, where he served as a faculty member and chaplain. Seven years later, he returned to the University as rector of the College Seminary at St. Andrew’s Hall.

Monsignor Reilly was selected to serve in multiple pontificates. St. John Paul II named him a chaplain to His Holiness in 2005 with the title of Reverend Monsignor, and Pope Francis appointed him a Missionary of Mercy in 2015. Learn more at shu.edu.

New York City’s leading chamber choir, MUSICA VIVA NY rings in the holiday season with ‘THIS LOVE BETWEEN US’, a one-night only concert capturing the awe and magnificence of our humanity on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at 5:00 p.m., at Manhattan’s All Souls NYC.

Led by the choir’s intrepid Artistic Director/Conductor ALEJANDRO HERNANDEZ-VALDEZ, Musica Viva NY will be joined by a baroque orchestra, sitar and tabla players, and guest vocalists.  REENA ESMAIL’s beautiful ‘This Love Between Us: Prayers for Unity’ and BACH’s brilliant ‘Magnificat’ written for Christmas Day make an interesting pairing, juxtaposing the familiar and the unfamiliar, the past and the present, and a young Indian-American composer and a venerated German master.

Celebrating a decade at the helm, Alejandro curates a program of works that are personally meaningful to him while showcasing the diversity that has been a hallmark of Musica Viva NY for the past 10 years. “Pairing Bach with a modern-day female composer of color is Musica Viva NY’s way of making classical music as relevant as possible,” explains Alejandro. “We hope to create a space in which audience members can find themselves reflected in the music they hear.”

REENA ESMAIL – Composer + Vocalist

Indian-American composer Reena Esmail (b. 1983) is known for fusing elements of both Hindustani and classical Western music into sweeping, passionate compositions. Drawing on her South Asian roots, Esmail — who has worked with the Kronos Quartet, Albany Symphony, and Chicago Sinfonietta, among others — creates choral and symphonic pieces that have been hailed as compelling, exhilarating, memorable, and altogether original.

Esmail expounds in her program notes: “Even more than uniting musical practices, this piece unites people from two different musical traditions: a sitar and tabla join the choir and baroque orchestra. Each of the musicians is asked to keep one hand firmly rooted in their own tradition and training, while reaching the other hand outward to greet another musical culture.” Learn more at reenaesmail.com.

    J.S. BACH

Through the course of almost half a century, J.S. Bach wrote sacred music for virtually every kind of occasion his faith called for. And among the hundreds of cantatas, the Passions, the masses, and the oratorios, ‘Magnificat’ was Bach’s most elaborate sacred work to date. The ‘Magnificat’ is the first large choral work that Bach composed after his appointment in Leipzig in the spring of 1723. The text comes from the “Song of Mary,” a rich statement of purpose and faith from the Gospel of Luke, and is about the visit made by Mary to her cousin Elisabeth, who was also pregnant. It was first performed on Christmas Day 1723. Musica Viva NY performs Bach’s revised version from 1733 featuring transverse flutes and two oboes.

NEW YORK’S BREAKDANCER AND HIP HOP PIONEER KURTIS BLOW HOSTS  NJPAC’S HIP HOP NUTCRACKER

Hip Hop Nutcracker performers (Credit: NJPAC.org)
    • By Mabel Pais

‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’, Tchaikovsky’s 130-year-old ballet reimagined as a holiday dance spectacle, will take place on Sunday, December 8 for two spectacular performances at 2PM and 7:00PM celebrating the show’s 12th season. Adding to the excitement – inspired by the live stage show, the Original Special ‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’ from Disney Branded Television will stream this holiday season, only on Disney+.

Breakdancing made its official debut at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics and that’s how New York’s KURTIS BLOW started his career.

Watch Kurtis Blow speak on breakdancing and the Olympics – youtu.be/eoN_acSWeLA

‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’ features breakdancer and hip hop pioneer KURTIS BLOW, the first rapper to be signed by a major label in 1979. Blow is considered one of hip hop’s founding fathers and will perform as the MC of ‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’. The tour includes a cast of a dozen all-star dancers, an on-stage DJ and an electric violinist who turns the beloved ‘Nutcracker’ score on its head.

Watch a preview of the production here –  youtu.be/toBO5yHVIhg.

    HISTORY

Created in 2013 by director/choreographer Jennifer Weber and writer Mike Fitelson, ‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’ pays homage to the original (George) Balanchine ballet, retold through the modern, self-expressive gaze of hip-hop culture. The production has evolved into a masterpiece due to the creators’ never-ending commitment to enhancing the production, and dancers who continue to raise the bar each year. To date, ‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’ has been performed more than 200 times in 70 cities. “I love performing at NJPAC each year and creating lifelong memories for our audiences,” says Kurtis Walker, known professionally as Kurtis Blow.

It’s a big accomplishment for Blow as well; who on December 6, 2020, had a heart transplant that has given him a new life. He paved the way for generations of hip hop artists and fans after scoring the first certified gold record rap song in 1980, ‘The Breaks’.  Blow is also responsible for ‘Christmas Rappin’, acclaimed for being the first rap holiday song.

    STORY

Just like the classic Nutcracker story, in ‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’ Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince go on a dream adventure battling a gang of mice, visiting the land of sweets and learning the lessons of the holiday season. Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s beloved story from traditional 19th century Germany to the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of contemporary New York City. Through the modern, self-expressive gaze of hip hop culture, the dynamic performers of ‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’ celebrate the magic of the entire holiday season on the most inclusive holiday of them all – New Year’s Eve, a time for new beginnings.

Two events took place during NJPAC’s inaugural season (1997-98) that boldly announced what the vision of this new arts center would be. The first, a performance by the boundary-pushing chamber group Kronos Quartet. The second, a tribute to gospel singer and activist Mahalia Jackson. Now, the Kronos Quartet returns to NJPAC to explore the inspiring voice of Mahalia Jackson, refracted through works by Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Terry Riley, Laurie Anderson, and more.

Mahalia Jackson was the voice of the civil rights movement. She sang her truth across the south: at Selma, the March on Washington and the funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr. She won the first-ever GRAMMY® for gospel music, and was honored with a posthumous lifetime achievement award in 1972.

For 50 years, San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet has challenged and reimagined what a string quartet can be. Kronos has been at the forefront of revolutionizing chamber music into a living art form that responds to the people and issues of our time. This marks the NJPAC debut of the latest iteration of Kronos Quartet featuring its two newest members: violinist Gabriela Diaz and cellist Paul Wiancko.
