EXPLORATION THROUGH HOMELANDS

efferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore routes, map geography, establish diplomatic relations, describe plants and animals and strengthen American claims. The Corps of Discovery departed in 1804 and reached the Pacific in 1805 before returning in 1806. The expedition succeeded only through Indigenous knowledge, trade, food, horses, guidance and diplomacy. Sacagawea, a Lemhi Shoshone woman traveling with her husband Toussaint Charbonneau and infant son, interpreted and helped secure vital horses. York, enslaved by Clark, performed the same dangerous labor as other members and attracted interest among Native communities, yet returned without the freedom he deserved. Lewis and Clark recorded extensive scientific and geographic information. Their journals also reveal the expedition’s imperial purpose: distributing medals, asserting American authority and preparing commercial and political expansion. Indigenous nations interpreted the visitors according to their own diplomatic interests; few could have foreseen the scale of settlement that followed.

They crossed no empty wilderness. They traveled through nations that knew the land far better than they did.”
