Journalists used AI to trace German far-left militant well before police pounced
Berlin (TIP): Investigative journalists using artificial-intelligence tools were on the trail of a fugitive member of the notorious Red Army Faction well before German police announced a breakthrough in the 30-year-old case earlier this week. Daniela Klette, 65, a member of the leftist militant group, was arrested on Monday in her Berlin flat on suspicion of committing a string of robberies and at least one attempted murder between 1999 and 2016 to finance her underground life.
German police and security services have drawn criticism over their failures in some politically charged investigations. Their defenders say strict privacy laws limit their ability to use the kinds of artificial intelligence-enhanced tools that a German TV podcast deployed to track down Klette last year.
Daniela Behrens, the interior minister of Lower Saxony state where many of the crimes were committed, hailed Klette’s arrest as a major breakthrough and a tribute to the diligence of the police and prosecutors on the case.
Last year, however, an ARD television podcast tracked Klette, one of three RAF militants still sought 26 years after the group announced its dissolution, by putting the picture from her wanted notice through image search tool PimEyes.
This yielded online images of a much older woman going by the name “Claudia Ivone” who, until the Covid pandemic struck in 2020, regularly took part in Berlin’s Afro-Brazilian scene and was a practitioner of Brazilian martial dance capoeira.
“I strongly recommend that you follow this trace,” Bellingcat investigative journalist Michael Colborne recalled telling the podcasters in an interview with Die Zeit weekly on Thursday. He said he had run the pictures through a host of face comparison tools and kept turning up the same result.
The ARD podcasters passed their finding to law enforcement authorities, who on Tuesday said they had been put back on Klette’s trail in November by a tip from the public.
“For reasons of investigation tactics we make no disclosures about our detection methods,” prosecutor Alexander Hege said when asked if the podcast was the original source of the tip. (Reuters) -
Iranian singer who won Grammy for Mahsa Amini protest anthem is sentenced to prison in Iran
Dubai (TIP): An Iranian singer who won a Grammy presented by US first lady Jill Biden has been sentenced to more than three years in prison over his anthem supporting the 2022 protests over the death of Mahsa Amini. Shervin Hajipour posted on Instagram on March 1, the same day that Iran held its parliamentary election, what appeared to be part of the judgment against him. It said Hajipour received a three-year, eight-month sentence on charges of “propaganda against the system” and “encouraging people to protest”.
The court issued its sentence in part because it found he hadn’t properly expressed regret over publishing the song.
It also imposed a two-year travel ban and ordered him to create a song about “US crimes”, as well as make posts about those crimes online.
Hajipour thanked his lawyers and his agent for their support.
“I will not mention the name of the judge and the prosecutor so that they don’t get insulted and threatened, because insults and threats are not in the religion of humanity,” he wrote. “Finally, one day we will understand each other. Until then.”
Hajipour already had served some prison time, but was out on bail pending the court’s decision. It was unclear if he had already reported to serve his sentence.
Iranian state-run media, focused on the election on Friday, didn’t note Hajipour’s sentence. Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Hajipour’s song “Baraye”, or “For” in English, begins with: “For dancing in the streets”, “for the fear we feel when we kiss”.
The lyrics list reasons that young Iranians posted online for why they had protested against Iran’s ruling theocracy after Amini’s death in September 2022, allegedly for not wearing her mandated headscarf to the liking of security forces.
The protests quickly escalated into calls to overthrow Iran’s clerical rulers. A subsequent security crackdown killed more than 500 people, with more than 22,000 detained. Jill Biden awarded Hajipour the Grammy’s new song for social change special merit award during the ceremony last year.
“This song became the anthem of the Mahsa Amini protests, a powerful and poetic call for freedom and women’s rights,” Biden said at the ceremony.
“Shervin was arrested, but this song continues to resonate around the world with its powerful theme: Women, life, freedom.” (AP) -
Japan population down by largest margin in 2023, births at record low
Tokyo (Japan) (TIP): The number of babies born in Japan in the year 2023 fell to a record low from a year earlier as the country’s population shrank by its largest ever margin, government data showed, according to a report by Kyodo News The figure for babies was down by 5.1 per cent to 758,631, according to preliminary data released by the health ministry on Feb 26, the Japanese news agency reported.
A country’s birth rate is the ratio of live births to the total population in a given year. It is usually expressed as the number of live births per 1,000 people.
The figure has remained below the 800,000 mark since the year 2022. Japan’s population, including foreign residents, fell by 831,872, with deaths outnumbering births. A forecast by the Japanese government’s National Institute of Population and Social Security Research has estimated births in the country to decline to below 760,000 in the year 2035.
The fast pace of dip in newborns has been attributed to late marriages and people staying single, Kyodo News reported stating that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida administration has termed the period leading up to 2030 as “the last chance” to reverse the trend.
The number of births hit a peak in the year 1973 at around 2.09 million babies and fell to below 1 million in the year 2016. Meanwhile, according to government data, the number of deaths in Japan also hit a record 1,590,503, while the number of marriages fell to its lowest level since the end of World War II at 489,281 unions. Rafah (Gaza Strip) (TIP): Israeli troops fired on a crowd of Palestinians waiting for aid in Gaza City on February 29, witnesses said. More than 100 people were killed, bringing the death toll since the start of the Israel-Hamas war to more than 30,000, according to health officials.

The White House said on Thursday it is looking into reports of Israeli fire on Palestinians, describing it as a “serious incident”
“We mourn the loss of innocent life and recognise the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where innocent Palestinians are just trying to feed their families,” a White House spokesperson said
Initially, there were reports of an Israeli strike on the crowd, but witnesses later said Israeli troops opened fire as people pulled flour and canned goods off of trucks.
Israeli officials acknowledged that troops opened fire, saying they did so after the crowd approached in a threatening way. The officials insisted on anonymity to give details about what happened, after the military said in a statement that “dozens were killed and injured from pushing, trampling and being run over by the trucks”.
Gaza City and the surrounding areas in the enclave’s north were the first targets of Israel’s air, sea and ground offensive, launched in response to Hamas’ October 7 attack. Aid groups say it has become nearly impossible to deliver humanitarian assistance in most of Gaza because of the difficulty of coordinating with the Israeli military, ongoing hostilities and the breakdown of public order, with crowds of desperate people overwhelming aid convoys. Thailand plans to legalise surrogacy for foreign couples
Bangkok (TIP): Thailand is amending a law to allow foreign couples to seek surrogacy services in the country, a senior health official said on March 1. In 2015, Thailand introduced tough regulations to control surrogacy and banned the process for foreign couples after several high profile scandals that led to a crackdown on the country’s unregulated “wombs for hire” industry.
“We will amend the law that will allow foreign couples to receive surrogacy service here based on regulations,” Arkhom Praditsuwan, deputy director-general of Health Service Support Department, told Reuters.
Those eligible must be legally married, regardless of their gender, and the child from surrogacy must be guaranteed protection and rights in the couple’s home country, Arkhom said.
Foreign couples will be allowed to bring their own surrogate or use a Thai surrogate, and those undergoing the process will need to be vetted by a government committee, he said.
The proposed law changes will be submitted for cabinet approval later this month as part of a wider reform of regulations on surrogacy, in-vitro fertilisation and artificial insemination to allow Thais, including same-sex couples, greater access to these services as well as enhancing medical tourism, Arkhom said.
If the cabinet approves the amendment, it will be submitted to parliament and the senate for consideration.
Thailand made commercial surrogacy illegal in 2015 and only allows surrogacy, controlled by a government committee, for Thai couples or a Thai who has married a foreigner for at least three years and who faces difficulty in having children. (Reuters) -
Russians gather in subdued defiance to lay Navalny to rest
Moscow (TIP): Standing under grey skies holding bouquets, Russians lined up patiently along pavements leading towards opposition politician Alexei Navalny’s funeral on March 1, two weeks after his death in a Siberian penal colony. By the time the coffin was being driven to a cemetery on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, thousands had gathered, chanting Navalny’s name. Some called President Vladimir Putin, who Navalny’s allies accuse of ordering his death, a murderer.
The Kremlin denies any state involvement in his death. The protest went a little further. The Kremlin said any unsanctioned gatherings in support of Navalny would violate the law, and police had deployed hours before the funeral, erecting metal barriers.
Mourners were forced to mill around a short distance from the site of the funeral, the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God in the Moscow district of Maryino where Navalny used to live, and from the Borisovskoye cemetery where he was later taken and buried.
Among the mourners were foreign dignitaries, including US Ambassador Lynne Tracy, who stood solemnly in black outside the church before the funeral carrying red roses. No mourners would give reporters their full names.
Inside the church, Navalny’s mother Lyudmila sat holding a candle as priests in white robes stood over the coffin. Navalny’s top aides, all based outside Russia, struggled to contain their emotions as they broadcast live video of the farewell to their leader.— Reuters -
Rishi Sunak makes impassioned plea to protect British democracy
London (TIP): Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has issued an impassioned plea for Britain to protect its democracy as he warned that extremist forces were out to tear the country apart and undermine its multi-faith identity.
Referencing his own Hindu beliefs, the British-Indian leader on March 1 stressed that the enduring values of the UK are about embracing migrants of all faiths and ethnicities and urged protesters to ensure peaceful demonstrations are not hijacked by extremist forces.
“Immigrants who have come here have integrated and contributed. They have helped write the latest chapter in our island story. They have done this without being required to give up their identity,” said Sunak in a speech outside 10 Downing Street.
“You can be a practising Hindu and a proud Briton as I am, or a devout Muslim and a patriotic citizen as so many are, or a committed Jewish person and the heart of your local community, and all underpinned by the tolerance of our established, Christian church,” he said.
“But I fear that our great achievement in building the world’s most successful multi-ethnic, multi faith democracy is being deliberately undermined. There are forces here at home trying to tear us apart,” he added.
He was speaking soon after what he characterised as the “beyond alarming” win in a byelection on Thursday of a controversial politician, George Galloway, in Greater Manchester following a campaign dominated by the divisions of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
He said on too many occasions recently, the streets of Britain had been hijacked by small groups who are hostile to British values and have no respect for its democratic traditions.
“Islamist extremists and the far right feed off and embolden each other. They are equally desperate to pretend that their violence is somehow justified when actually these groups are two sides of the same extremist coin… both loathe the pluralist, modern country we are,” he said.
The British Prime Minister stressed that both these groups of extremists were spreading the poison of extremism with the aim of draining Britain’s confidence.
He added: “No country is perfect, but I am enormously proud of the good that our country has done.” “I stand here as our country’s first non-white Prime Minister, leading the most diverse government in our country’s history to tell people of all races, all faiths and all backgrounds it is not the colour of your skin, the God you believe in or where you were born, that will determine your success but just your own hard work and endeavour.” Sunak reiterated his support for a new protocol agreed with the police forces of the country earlier this week to take action against violent activities that threaten the personal security of members of Parliament and also any violence during serial protests taking place in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict. He said threats of violence and intimidation are alien to the British way of doing things and must be resisted at all times.
“I love this country. My family and I owe it so much. The time has now come for us all to stand together to combat the forces of division and beat this poison. We must face down the extremists who would tear us apart,” he urged. (PTI) -

Being the son of another famous flamenco guitarist, El Tomate – and having Miguel Tomate as his grandfather – young José Fernández was exposed to the beauty, metric scope, harmony and melody that comprise flamenco music throughout his childhood and infancy.
In a way, you could say that being a flamenco guitarist runs through your veins – it’s in your genes. His uncle, Miguel Vega de la Cruz, better known to the public as El Niño Miguel, provided the young José with an example of the levels of success that could be achieved within flamenco music.
Today, this talent can also be seen in Tomatito’s son, José del Tomate, who most recently accompanied his father on his international tours.

The New Jersey Symphony (NJS) presents two performances of Carl Orff’s spectacular choral masterpiece, ‘Carmina Burana’: Friday, March 1, 2024, at 8 pm and Sunday, March 3 at 3 pm, both at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark.
CARMINA BURANA
Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’ pulses with springtime life, the text of this cantata taken from the bawdy writings of medieval monks who had more on their minds than scripture. Meanwhile, Kodály’s Dances of Galánta overflows with Hungarian flavor and memorable tunes, inspired by the folk music of the composer’s childhood. Between these, a work of exquisite musical reflection by Bach, his concerto for oboe d’amore, the duskier cousin of the modern oboe.
‘Carmina Burana’ uses texts, written in Latin, German and old French, from a manuscript found in a Bavarian monastery in 1847 that date back as far as the 11th century.
PROGRAM
Music Director Xian Zhang conducts the program, which features the Symphony alongside renowned vocal soloists: Jana McIntyre, soprano; Barry Banks, tenor; and Hugh Russell, baritone. Frequent collaborators with the New Jersey Symphony, the Montclair State University Chorale, under the direction of Heather J. Buchanan, will sing the choral parts of ‘Carmina Burana,’ including the world-famous opening movement ‘O Fortuna,’ with text drawn from the medieval poem of the same name.
Also on the program, New Jersey Symphony English Horn/Oboe player Andrew Adelson will perform J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Oboe d’amore. Adelson has been a member of the New Jersey Symphony for more than 20 years, is on faculty at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School.
Opening the performances is Kodály’s ‘Dances of Galánta,’ based on Hungarian folk music.

Indian diplomat for better connectivity with Sri Lanka
Colombo (TIP): Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha has made his first official visit to Sri Lanka’s Northern Province and stressed the need for improved connectivity between the two countries. The newly-appointed Indian envoy completed his three-day maiden visit to the island nation’s north on February 18, the Indian High Commission said in a statement on Sunday. He participated in diverse engagements during the visit, attesting to the “deep-rooted nature of the bilateral partnership as also India’s firm commitment to deepening socio-economic and cultural ties with Northern Province,” it said.
Jha emphasised connectivity while visiting the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Port and the Talaimannar Pier and spoke of the need for expeditious resumption of ferry services between the two countries.
During his visit to the Palaly Airport, he explored means to strengthen air connectivity through infrastructure development at the airport, the statement said.
In 2023, Sri Lanka sought Indian financial assistance to extend the runway at the Palaly airport after India’s Alliance Air began Chennai-Palaly flights.
“The High Commissioner offered prayers at the historic Ram Sethu (Adam’s Bridge). He also visited the ancient Thiruketheeswaram temple, which was renovated with grant assistance from the Government of India,” the statement said. In India’s endeavour to contribute towards addressing the energy needs of islands off Jaffna, Jha assessed the readiness for early rollout of the Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems Project in Nainativu Island. Pakistan to probe trolling of officials over ‘rigging’ in February 8 polls
Islamabad (TIP): Pakistan’s caretaker government has constituted a joint investigation team, including from the ISI, following a massive social media campaign against officials and functionaries of the top poll body alleging their involvement in the reported rigging of elections, according to media reports on February 22. The report is to be submitted in 15 days. The joint investigation team (JIT) will look into the relevant people who have trolled government officials and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) functionaries and “identify and prosecute the culprits” under the relevant laws.
The JIT formation comes in the wake of the consistent allegations by the jailed former prime minister Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party that the government officials and also those from the ECP were involved in what Khan described as “Mother of All Rigging,” which he claimed enabled his arch rivals to steal his party’s mandate.
Two weeks after the voting day, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) struck a power-sharing deal to form a coalition government led by ex-prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, a move that could effectively keep Khan out of power.
Both the PML-N and the PPP won fewer seats in Parliament than candidates backed by Khan’s PTI in an election mired in controversies, including vote rigging, PTI has alleged and unleashed a substantial campaign on social media claiming that the powerful establishment was hand in gloves with the perpetrators of rigging.
“As per a notification issued by the interior ministry, the JIT was formed under Section 30 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 and an additional director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will be its convener,” Dawn.com reported.
Other members will be from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the National Database & Registration Authority (Nadra), and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). It could also hire IT experts if required to probe the “malicious” social media campaign. According to the terms of reference of the JIT, it will identify and prosecute individuals involved in social media campaigns against government officials for their alleged role in irregularities on the day of polling.
It will also propose measures to counter such campaigns in the future. The JIT has 15 days to submit its report to the relevant office. (PTI) -
Thailand ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra gets parole
Bangkok (TIP): Thailand’s billionaire ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra was released on parole on February 18 after six months in detention, his first day of freedom in his homeland 15 years after fleeing in the wake of his overthrow in a military coup.
The 74-year-old tycoon, whose family’s party is back in power, was granted parole despite having not spent a single night in prison for a sentence that had in August been commuted from eight years to one year by the country’s king. — Reuters -
Landslide in eastern Afghanistan leaves at least 5 people dead, 25 missing
Islamabad (TIP): A landslide triggered by heavy rain and snowfall buried more than two dozen houses in a remote village in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least five people and leaving more than 20 others missing, a provincial official said February 18. The landslide, which occurred Sunday night, destroyed or damaged more than two dozen houses in Noorgram district, according to Samiulhaq Haqbayan, the Taliban-appointed director of information and culture in Nuristan province.
Rescuers have so far recovered five bodies and a search is underway for at least 25 others, including women and children, who are trapped under the destroyed houses, Haqbayan said.
The landslide occurred after heavy rains and snowfall that are still ongoing, he added.
Nuristan province, which borders Pakistan, is mostly covered by mountainous forests. (AP) -
Taliban execute 2 convicts in public
Kabul (TIP): The Taliban carried out a double public execution at a stadium in south-eastern Afghanistan on February 22. Thousands watched the killing of two convicted men, as their victims’ relatives fired the gunshot. The Taliban’s Supreme Court had ruled that the pair were responsible for the stabbing deaths of two victims in separate attacks.
It identified the two as Syed Jamal from central Wardak province and Gul Khan from Ghazni. Meanwhile, the United Nations criticised the Taliban and called on the country’s rulers to halt such practices. — AP -
Shehbaz set to be PM, Zardari Prez candidate
Islamabad (TIP): The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan Peoples Party have struck a power-sharing deal to form a coalition government led by ex-prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, a move that could effectively keep their arch-rival Imran Khan out of power after the controversial elections.

At a joint news conference here late February 19 night after marathon negotiations, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari announced that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif, 72, will assume the role of the prime minister once again. Similarly, PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, 68, will be the joint candidate for the president’s office.
Last week, the PML-N, in a surprise move, announced that the party supremo and three-time former premier Nawaz Sharif has nominated his younger brother Shehbaz as a candidate for the slot of prime minister. Nawaz, 74, was earlier confident of securing a record fourth term. — PTI -
At least 26 men massacred in Papua New Guinea tribal violence, police tell Australian media
Melbourne (TIP): At least 26 men were massacred in tribal violence in Papua New Guinea, Australian media reported on February 18. A tribe, their allies and mercenaries were on their way to attack a neighbouring tribe when they were ambushed on Sunday in the remote highlands of South Pacific’s Enga, Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary Acting Superintendent George Kakas told Australian Broadcasting Corp.
Kakas initially said 53 had died. But security forces later revised the death toll down to 26, ABC reported. It was not immediately clear whether any of the ambushers might be among the dead.
Bodies were collected from the battlefield, roads and the riverside, then loaded onto police trucks and taken to the hospital. Kakas said they were still counting “those who were shot, injured and ran off into the bushes.”
Papua New Guinea is a diverse, developing nation of 10 million mostly subsistence farmers with 800 languages in a strategically important part of the South Pacific.
Internal security has become an increasing challenge for its government as China, the United States and Australia seek closer security ties.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government was ready to assist Papua New Guinea, which is Australia’s nearest neighbour and the largest single recipient of Australian foreign aid. “That is very disturbing the news that has come out of Papua New Guinea,” Albanese said before the death toll was revised down. China building villages on disputed Bhutan border
Beijing (TIP): China is reportedly pressing ahead with the construction of border villages in the disputed territory with Bhutan, despite the ongoing border talks between the two countries. At least three villages have been built in the mountainous region separating the two countries, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported on February 19.
The rapid expansion began as a poverty alleviation scheme but serves a dual national security role, the report quoted the ruling Chinese Communist Party officials as saying.
In a disputed remote village inside a border zone that has long been disputed by China and Bhutan, 18 new residents were waiting to enter their newly built houses. (PTI) -
India in touch with Moscow for early ‘discharge’ of nationals working for Russian Army
Moscoe (TIP): India on February 23 said it was in touch with Moscow for early “discharge” of Indians working as support staff to Russian Army and urged its nationals to stay away from the conflict zone in Ukraine. The comments by External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal came following a report that some Indians are working as support staff to the Russian Army in the conflict zone.
“We are aware that a few Indian nationals have signed up for support jobs with the Russian army,” Jaiswal said. He said the Indian embassy in Moscow has regularly taken up this matter with the relevant Russian authorities for their “early discharge”. “We urge all Indian nationals to exercise due caution and stay away from this conflict,” he said. According to media reports, several Indians have been working as security helpers in the Russian military, and they were forced to fight with Russian soldiers in certain areas along Russia’s border with Ukraine.
All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi had urged the external affairs ministry to rescue the Indians.
“Sir @DrSJaishankar kindly use your good offices to bring these men back home. Their lives are at risk & their families are justifiably worried,” Owaisi said on X on Wednesday. -
Angry French farmers with tractors are back to Paris for another protest
Paris (TIP): Angry farmers were back to Paris on their tractors February 23 in a new protest demanding more government support and simpler regulations, on the eve of a major agricultural fair in the French capital.
Dozens of tractors drove peacefully into a neighbourhood on the capital’s west side carrying flags from Rural Coordination, the farmers’ union that staged the protest.
The protesters then posed with their tractors on a bridge over the Seine River with the Eiffel Tower in the background.
The latest protest comes three weeks after farmers lifted roadblocks around Paris and elsewhere in the country after the government offered over 400 million euros (USD 433 million) to address their grievances over low earnings, heavy regulation and what they describe as unfair competition from abroad.
“Save our agriculture,” the Rural Coordination said on X. One tractor was carrying a poster reading: “Death is in the field.”
The convoy temporarily slowed traffic on the A4 highway, east of the capital, and on the Paris ring-road earlier on Friday morning.
French farmers’ actions are part of a broader protest movement in Europe against EU agriculture policies, bureaucracy and overall business conditions.
Farmers complain that the 27-nation bloc’s environmental policies, such as the Green Deal, which calls for limits on the use of chemicals and on greenhouse gas emissions, limit their business and make their products more expensive than non-EU imports.
Other protests are being staged across France as farmers seek to put pressure on the government to implement its promises.
Government officials have held a series of meetings with farmers unions in recent weeks to discuss a new bill meant to defend France’s “agricultural sovereignty”.
The government’s plan also includes hundreds of millions of euros in aid, tax breaks and a promise not to ban pesticides in France that are allowed elsewhere in Europe, which French farmers say puts them at an unfair disadvantage.
French President Emmanuel Macron is to visit Paris Agricultural Fair on Saturday, where he is planning to have a “big debate” with farmers, supermarket CEOs and members of environmental groups, his office said.

UK government revamps logo with King Charles III’s chosen domed crown
London (TIP): In a move that symbolises a new royal era for the country, the UK government has updated the logo on its official GOV.UK digital services used across all departments for official day-to-day business with the chosen crown of King Charles III. When the 75-year-old acceded to the throne in September 2022, he chose to use the Tudor Crown in his Royal Cypher, marking a shift away from the St Edward’s Crown used by his late mother Queen Elizabeth II.
The design of the Tudor Crown can be distinguished by its slightly more domed appearance, which will now become the iconic image across British government notices.
“Following the accession of His Majesty The King, we are updating the symbols of state to reflect the new design of the Tudor Crown,” Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden said as he announced the change on February 18.
“The digital realm is now an integral part of our lives, and as His Majesty’s Government we take pride in this change to GOV.UK today, honouring the chosen crown of our King,” he said.
The GOV.UK logo begins its transition this week to recognise the chosen crown of the King on its homepage and sitewide menu bar. The transition is covered within the usual operating costs of the GOV.UK website, the UK Cabinet Office said.
It added that it is important people are aware of this change given that GOV.UK digital services are used by millions of people every single week – from passport and tax services to other official government information.
“GOV.UK is an essential part of living, studying and working in the UK. It is used by millions of people weekly for both routine and sometimes life-changing reasons such as getting access to benefits or finding a job,” said Alex Burghart, parliamentary secretary for the cabinet office. “Whilst we are importantly updating the GOV.UK logo to reflect the new monarch’s choice of crown, this site remains the same trusted and official digital home of the UK government,” he said.
While the new domed shape can be easily identified, the public are encouraged to report any misleading and fraudulent GOV.UK styled websites via its dedicated reporting page during the course of the transition.
The new logo has been created collaboratively between the Government Digital Service (GDS), the Government Communication Service (GCS) and the Royal Household and the majority of changes to replace the St Edward’s Crown with the Tudor Crown logo on GOV.UK are expected to have taken place by March 1. British ship struck by missile off Yemen coast
Dubai (TIP): A cargo ship was set on fire off the southern coast of Yemen after being struck by a missile on February 22, which has prompted US-led naval forces to respond, British maritime agencies reported. The UK-owned, Palau-flagged ship was en route to Egypt from Thailand, according to maritime security firm Ambrey and ship tracking data. Islander is the name of the vessel, two shipping sources said. US-led coalition forces are responding to the incident, which involved two missiles being fired at the ship 70 nautical miles southeast of Aden, Yemen. Iran-aligned Houthi militants in Yemen have launched repeated drone and missile strikes in the Red Sea since November.- Reuters
