    By Mabel Pais

The New Jersey Symphony will present Disney’s ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ in Concert featuring a screening of the complete film while the musical score is performed live by the orchestra. The film concert takes place at several locations, December 5-8, 2024.

    STORY

The Muppets perform Charles Dickens’ classic holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Gonzo, as Dickens, narrates the story with the help of Rizzo the Rat. The film also features Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit, Fozzie Bear as Fozziwig and Robin the Frog as Tiny Tim.

When the grumpy Scrooge receives Christmas Eve visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, they show him the error of his self-serving ways. Though the miserable old man seems beyond any hope of redemption and happiness, the kind and humble Bob Cratchit, his family and the Spirits open Scrooge’s eyes—and his heart—to the true meaning of Christmas.

The original score was composed by Miles Goodman (‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,’ ‘Little Shop of Horrors’) with songs by Oscar®, Emmy and GRAMMY-winning songwriter Paul Williams (‘Rainbow Connection,’ ‘Evergreen’).

    PROGRAM

Disney’s The Muppet Christmas Carol in Concert is presented by the New Jersey Symphony, conducted by Constantine Kitsopoulos.

  • ‘SPIDER MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’ LANDS LIVE IN NJ

‘SPIDER MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’ LANDS LIVE IN NJ

    • By Mabel Pais

The next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga and the highly anticipated sequel ‘Spider-Man™: Across the Spider-Verse Live in Concert’  makes its landing at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on Sunday, September 22 at 3 pm.

The films have become a sensation for their incredible and ground-breaking soundtracks which have been heralded for their unique mix of orchestral and electronic music, and scratch DJ’ing.

In ‘Spider-Man™: Across the Spider-Verse’ Live in Concert audiences will see the film presented on a huge HD screen, accompanied by a range of musicians and instrumentalists performing music from the film’s score and soundtrack live to picture. This will include an orchestra, a scratch DJ on turntables, percussion and electronic instruments.

The score for the film was created by Emmy-winning and Academy Award® and Golden Globe®-nominated composer, Daniel Pemberton, known for his work on movies such as ‘Ferrari’, ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,’ ‘Oceans 8’, ‘Enola Holmes’, ‘The Bad Guys’ and ‘Steve Jobs’.

Pemberton took influence for both Spider-Verse film scores from growing up amid the London rave scene in the 90s, where he regularly immersed himself in ambient and techno nights. Daniel also drew inspiration from the scratch DJ’s at ‘The Blue Note Club’ in East London, where he first witnessed scratching vinyl being used in an artistic form. This, coupled with heavy-drumming and punk guitars, gives the soundtrack its unique sound, fusing genres to make something bold and unparalleled which will be brought to life in an exhilarating style in these live concerts.

“Across The Spider-Verse is probably the most exciting, groundbreaking and impactful score I’ve written,” says Pemberton. “I’ve always believed that there should be no barriers to music, but it’s rare to get the opportunity that you get within the Spider-Verse – where else could you have powerful orchestral themes side by side with punk drum solos, virtuoso record scratching next to twisted electronics, off-kilter whistling next to hip-hop beats?”

The film’s soundtrack was curated by Metro Boomin, and features the likes of Future, Nas, Swae Lee, James Blake, Lil Wayne, Lil Uzi Vert, and more.

Pemberton says, “Watching the film with the live band performing in a huge room of people is one of the most thrilling ways to experience it and it’s a huge honor to know that audiences are going to get a show that delivers a unique emotional hit they will hopefully remember for a long, long time after.”

Miles Morales (Spider-Man) returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy (Spider-Gwen), Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse’s very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask – it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero.

‘The Godfather Live’ brings director Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece to music venues for the first time, making its premiere at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC – njpac.org) in Newark on Friday, August 16 at 7:30 pm; and Count Basie Center for the Arts (thebasie.org) in Red Bank on Sunday, August 18 at 3 pm.

Winner of three Academy® Awards and countless other honors, ‘The Godfather’ remains one of the greatest films in the history of cinema. Nino Rota’s iconic score, accompanied by the film’s traditional Italian folk music and jazz comes to life on stage, performed live by the New Jersey Symphony (njsymphony.org) while the film is simultaneously shown in high definition on the big screen.

    THE GODFATHER

‘The Godfather,’ released by Paramount Pictures in 1972 to popular and critical acclaim, tells the story of the Corleones and their rivalry with other New York crime families between 1945 and 1955, as the title character (Marlon Brando) hands over the reins of power to his youngest son (Al Pacino). Also starring James Caan, John Cazale, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton, the film won three Academy® Awards — including Best Picture and Best Actor (Marlon Brando) — and established Coppola’s reputation as one of the exciting new breed of directors who revolutionized Hollywood from the late 1960s onwards.

In 2008, an ‘Empire’ magazine vote saw ‘The Godfather’ named as the greatest film ever made, a distinction also awarded by ‘Entertainment Weekly’ and ‘Metacritic’. It came second in ‘Sight & Sound’s’ 2002 list and ‘Time Out’s’ 2003 readers’ poll and is currently ranked at number two in IMDb’s all-time list.

Composer Nino Rota achieved international acclaim in the 1950s and 1960s for his work with Italian directors Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti, scoring the likes of ‘White Nights’, ‘The Leopard’, ‘La Dolce Vita’ and ‘8½’. His music for ‘The Godfather’, including its immortal “Love Theme from ‘The Godfather,’”  was ranked at #5 in the American Film Institute’s list of the greatest scores ever written.

Justin Freer, Producer of ‘The Godfather Live’ in Concert said, “We are proud to embrace the evolution of live experience, and we hope that this concert honors the many talented musicians that bring the music of the movies to life, while giving everyone the ability to re-live one of the great masterpieces in Cinema.”
