    GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): India’s robust economic growth, coupled with its expanding global footprint, has positioned the country as a key player in the international arena. With Indian companies actively engaging in Central American market, India’s role in fostering economic ties and partnerships with countries like Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras has become increasingly significant. As the fifth largest economy globally and poised to become the third largest in the near future, India’s economic prowess has garnered attention worldwide. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has embarked on various initiatives aimed at spurring economic growth, fostering innovation, and enhancing global cooperation. His visionary leadership has propelled India onto the global stage, with initiatives such as ‘Make in India’, ‘Digital India’, and ‘Skill India’ driving economic growth and innovation across various sectors. These initiatives and India’s remarkable achievements in successful infrastructural development have not only bolstered India’s domestic economy but also have garnered global attention like Central American governments which are now eagerly embracing Indian companies to invest in and bolster their own infrastructural projects.

    In a significant stride toward strengthening infrastructure and economic development, Lakshmi Capital has made significant strides by securing five impactful projects with the Municipality of Xela (Quetzaltenango) in Guatemala, totaling an investment of US $1.2 billion. These projects include a hydroelectric system, cable car system, supply of 700 buses, a waste management plant, and a 75MW solar energy plant in the region. The Municipality of Xela and Laxmi Capital have already signed Letters of Intent for these projects, with processes currently at an advanced stage.

    In order to personally witness the progress and impact of these projects and to get valuable insights, Hon’ble Mayor of Xela, Mr. Juan Fernando Lopez has recently visited India to experience live demonstrations of these projects and their technical capabilities in India, which will be replicated during the final implementation of projects in Xela. During his visit, Mayor Lopez engaged with Indian officials, business leaders, and key stakeholders to explore avenues for partnership and collaboration. Site visits to Indian companies and facilities, meetings with industry experts, and discussions on areas of mutual interest formed the core of his agenda, with the aim of forging lasting partnerships that benefit both Xela and India.

    The delegation led by Mayor Juan Fernando Lopez of Municipality of Xela and Mr. Wendal Rodas, CMD, Lakshmi Capital, embarked on a transformative journey through India, exploring opportunities for collaboration and partnership in various sectors. The visit commenced with a visit to the Cable Car System by Usha Breco Ropeways in Haridwar, where the delegation gained insights into innovative transportation solutions. The journey continued with visits to renowned Indian companies, including Force Motors and Tata Motors in Pune and Ashok Leyland in Chennai, where Mayor Lopez witnessed the manufacturing processes of buses and electric vehicles. Impressed by India’s automotive sector development, he expressed enthusiasm for potential collaborations with Indian companies to upgrade Xela’s transportation services. The delegation also explored India’s strides in renewable energy, visiting a solar power plant in Avdi, Tamil Nadu, executed by Bharat Electronics Limited. Mayor Lopez commended India’s significant contribution to promoting renewable energy globally and participated in a tree plantation initiative at the solar power plant, symbolizing his commitment to sustainability. The visit concluded with a tour of a Waste Management Plant in Mumbai, providing insights into waste management practices and operations.

    Despite a busy schedule, Mayor Lopez took the time to immerse himself in India’s rich history and breathtaking beauty. Additionally, Mayor Lopez had the enriching experience of immersing himself in Indian spirituality by visiting a Shiva temple on the auspicious occasion of Shivratri, celebrating the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

    GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): Over the past decade, India’s remarkable achievements in successful infrastructural development have garnered global attention and inspired Indian companies to venture beyond their conventional roles of manufacturing and exporting finished goods. India’s rapid infrastructural progress serves as a beacon for other nations, with Central American governments eagerly embracing Indian companies to invest in and bolster their own infrastructural projects. Recognizing the strategic significance of the Central American region, companies like SRAM & MRAM have shifted their focus towards engaging in transformative infrastructure endeavors in Guatemala and El Salvador. This shift has led to the investment in ten impactful projects across these nations through their subsidiary, Lakshmi Capital, signaling a new era of collaboration and development.

    In a significant stride toward strengthening infrastructure and economic development in El Salvador, Lakshmi Capital, and the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation of the Republic of El Salvador signed a Memorandum of Understanding in San Salvador on 16 February 2023 for construction of 22 km metro line project in San Salvador. The MoU was signed between Minister Romeo Rodríguez of Ministry of Public Works, Government of Republic of El Salvador and Transportation and Mr. Russell Alexander Luther Rodas of Laxmi Capital in the presence of Ambassador of India in Guatemala, Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra. The metro line project aims to invigorate the economy and modernize transportation infrastructure in the country. Following a comprehensive pre-feasibility study, the decision was made to embark on the creation of a subway system in San Salvador, leveraging international investment for optimal outcomes.

    It is imperative to underscore that the initial proposal, initially spanning 11 kilometers, was subsequently augmented to an impressive 22 kilometers by the El Salvadoran Government. This remarkable expansion stands as a testament to India’s growing reputation globally and steadfast support, alongside the unwavering commitment and enthusiastic dedication showcased by Lakshmi Capital in propelling infrastructure development and fostering sustainable progress in El Salvador.

    The metro line project based on BOT Modal, outlines the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation’s role in providing pre-feasibility analyses, designs, and legal frameworks, while Lakshmi Capital will offer technical expertise and investment mechanisms. The signing ceremony followed a series of meetings convened by the Embassy of India in Guatemala between the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and Lakshmi Capital, underscoring their shared dedication to the project’s successful execution. Both parties will begin exchanging crucial information, marking the start of the analysis, study, and proposal stages of the initiative.

    GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): India’s proactive outreach has sparked significant interest among Indian companies, leading to a notable uptick in bilateral trade and a surge in the exchange of trade delegations. Following successful visits by a 15-member delegation from The Plastic Export Promotion Council (Plexconcil) in November 2023 and a 20-member delegation from the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO), Guatemala witnessed the arrival of a massive 92-member delegation, comprising 74 companies from The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil), on 19-20 February 2024. This delegation conducted a series of highly productive Business-to-Business meetings with local companies at the Westin Camino Real Hotel in Guatemala City. Notably, this delegation marks the largest-ever visit to the Latin American region by Pharmexcil, unlocking vast opportunities for collaboration and economic growth.

    The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) plays a pivotal role in promoting and facilitating India’s pharmaceutical exports on the global stage. As the apex body representing the Indian pharmaceutical industry, Pharmexcil functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Its primary objective is to enhance the competitiveness of Indian pharmaceutical products in international markets while ensuring compliance with global regulatory standards. Pharmexcil provides a range of services to its members, including market intelligence, trade facilitation, regulatory guidance, and promotional activities. Through its concerted efforts, Pharmexcil serves as a catalyst for driving the growth of India’s pharmaceutical exports, contributing significantly to the country’s economy and strengthening its position as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’.

    Guatemala has emerged as India’s largest trading partner in the Central American region, with bilateral trade reaching US$573.21 million in the 2021-22 period. This trend has continued to strengthen, with bilateral trade increasing to US$693 million in the 2022-23 period, indicating a notable upward trajectory. India’s pharmaceutical exports to Guatemala have been witnessing significant growth in recent years. With India being one of the world’s leading producers of high-quality generic medicines at competitive prices, its pharmaceutical products have gained traction in the Guatemalan market. These exports encompass a wide range of pharmaceutical formulations, including generic drugs, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), formulations, and medical devices. Such exchange of trade delegations and participation in business-to-business meetings have been instrumental in enhancing collaboration and exploring new avenues for pharmaceutical trade between the two countries.

    Pharmexcil launched its campaign in Guatemala in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Guatemala, with approximately 175 Guatemalan companies participating in the Business-to-Business meetings on both days. The event was also attended by some Honduran companies. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, Mr. Julio Eduardo Orozco, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Francis Garnica, Executive Director of MINECO’s National Competitiveness Program Ministry of Economy, and Ms. Lakshmi Prasanna, Director-Regulatory Affairs, Pharmexcil. The inaugural event featured presentations by Ms. Karem Sagastume from the Department of Regulation and Control of Pharmaceuticals and Related Products of the Ministry of Health, Sr. Eduardo Cheves, Investment Attraction Specialist for Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices, and Ms. Jennifer Lobos from the National Competitiveness Program (PRONACOM). Mr. Udaya Bhaskar, Director-General of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India, delivered his recorded remarks virtually. Ms. Lakshmi Prasanna, Director-Regulatory Affairs, Pharmexcil, delivered a presentation outlining the organization’s approach and future prospects. The delegation received an overwhelming response from local companies, demonstrating their keen interest in partnering with visiting countries. Delegation members also had the opportunity to interact with Guatemala’s apex health authorities such as UNOPS and IGGS to gain insights into trade regulations for pharmaceuticals and medical devices and discussed ways to enhance bilateral trade relations.

    GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): India’s proactive engagement with the untapped Central American market underscores its aspirations to emerge as a leader among global South nations. This outreach has proven highly attractive to numerous Indian companies, catalyzing a significant increase in bilateral trade. Notably, this surge in trade has unlocked vast opportunities not only for large conglomerates but also for small and medium enterprises. As part of this strategic direction, Guatemala and El Salvador recently hosted a successful visit by a delegation of 20 Indian companies from Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) led by Mr. Khalid Khan. This delegation engaged in a series of productive Business-to-Business meetings with local companies in Guatemala City and San Salvador from February 12 to 16, 2024.

    FIEO is an apex body of the Government recognized Export Promotion Councils, Commodity Boards and Export Development Authorities in India.  It was set up in 1965 by Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India to focus the efforts of all stakeholders engaged in promotion of trade from the country. FIEO exchanges business delegations, establishes MoUs with counterpart organizations overseas, and arranges exhibitions, catalogue shows abroad. It provides the crucial interface between International Trading community of India with the Central and State Governments, Financial Institutions, Ports, Railways, Surface Transport and all engaged in Export Trade Facilitation.  It directly and indirectly serves the interests of over 200,000 exporters from every Industry and Services sector in India.

    Guatemala has emerged as India’s largest trading partner in the Central American region, with bilateral trade reaching US$573.21 million in the 2021-22 period. This trend has continued to strengthen, with bilateral trade increasing to US$693 million in the 2022-23 period, indicating a notable upward trajectory. Similarly, India has been steadily expanding its trade presence in El Salvador, with trade reaching US$126 million in the financial year 2022-23. The top products exported from India to the Central American region include pharmaceuticals, textiles (especially cotton yarn and fibers), engineering products, automobiles (two and three-wheelers), motor vehicles/cars, auto components and parts, iron and steel, industrial machinery and parts, and electrical machinery and equipment. On the other hand, India primarily imports wood, wood charcoal, coffee, and aluminum scrap from these regions.

    FIEO launched its campaign in Guatemala in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Guatemala, with approximately 90 Guatemalan companies participating in the Business-to-Business meetings. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, Mr. Jorge Briz Abularach, President of the Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. Julio Eduardo Orozco, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala. The delegation received an overwhelming response from local companies, demonstrating their keen interest in partnering with visiting countries. During the event, FIEO signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chamber of Commerce to strengthen collaboration in investment, trade, quality standards, technology transfer, and economic cooperation. Delegation members also had the opportunity to interact with Guatemala’s apex export councils such as PRONACOM, AGEXPORT, Invest Guatemala, and the Chamber of Industry to gain insights into trade regulations and discuss ways to enhance bilateral trade relations.

Upon arrival, the delegates were warmly welcomed by the Honorable Minister of Economy of El Salvador, Ms. Maria Luisa Hayem, along with Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra and Mr. Salvador Gome Goche, President of Invest in El Salvador. Ambassador Ariel Galindo, former Ambassador of El Salvador in India, played a pivotal role in encouraging local companies to participate in the business meetings.     GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): In recent times, Indian companies’ interest and involvement in Guatemala, particularly across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, automobiles, business process outsourcing (BPO), and textiles, has increased.  The establishment of Yash Pakka Inc, with an investment of US $350 million, stands out as a noteworthy initiative, showcasing how Indian enterprises are effectively leveraging Guatemala’s strategic location to access markets in the Western Hemisphere. This endeavor has garnered attention from various conglomerates, with a recent example being a textile company making a substantial investment of approximately $300 million in Guatemala. The growing demand for the Guatemalan market among Indian businesses has spurred a series of Indian business delegations to explore new avenues for partnerships in the region. These developments have further attracted companies like SRAM & MRAM to explore opportunities in this dynamic region.

    SRAM & MRAM, a company under Hiranandani Group, has shown a keen interest in investing a significant amount in various infrastructure development projects across Latin America, particularly in the northern triangle region. SRAM & MRAM is a United Kingdom-based company with branches in several countries. The company has its core competencies in Agro-products and Information Technology, Hedge Fund Management, FOREX Management, Hospitality Services, etc. Recognizing the immense potential within the Latin American market. SRAM & MRAM, through its subsidiary company, Lakshmi Capital has reached out to the Embassy to seek insights into market dynamics. The company has pledged to invest a substantial total amount of US $17 billion, with a significant portion, amounting to US $10 billion, earmarked for the, namely the Guatemala Inter-oceanic Corridor. This project is planned to be structured under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BoT) model.

    On February 13, 2024, a significant milestone was reached with the official signing of a Letter of Intent between M/s Grupo Odepal, S.A. and M/s Lakshmi Capital, representing an investment commitment of US $10 billion for the construction of the Guatemalan Interoceanic Corridor (GIC). This ambitious project aims to develop a state-of-the-art Multimodal Transport System stretching across a land strip spanning 372 kilometers in length and 140 meters in width, effectively connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

    The GIC project encompasses several key components, including the establishment of two new deep-water ports on each coast of Guatemala, which will be linked by a double-track railway system. Additionally, a pipeline network will be constructed for the transportation of hydrocarbons coast to coast, complete with storage tanks and buoys in the ports to facilitate efficient operations. Furthermore, the GIC will feature six strategically distributed industrial, commercial, and services zones along the inter-oceanic land strip, aimed at promoting economic growth and facilitating trade. Moreover, the project will provide various ancillary services to support the region’s development, including the implementation of water collection and distribution systems, the establishment of an electricity generation and distribution network, deployment of fiber optic connections for enhanced communication infrastructure, ecological development and compensation initiatives, establishment of tourism promotional centers, and improvement of people transportation facilities.

    In addition to the GIC project, the company is also involved in significant developmental projects in the Municipality of Xela, with the signing of five additional impactful projects totaling an investment of US $1.2 billion. These projects include the implementation of a hydroelectric system, a cable car system, supply of 7000 buses, construction of a waste management plant, and development of a 75MW solar energy plant in the region. To promote this bilateral trade further, a delegation of 20 Indian companies led by Federation of Indian Export Organization (FIEO) is visiting Guatemala to interact with Local Guatemalan Companies in various Business to Business Meeting from 13-14 February 2024.

    FIEO is an apex body of the Government recognized Export Promotion Councils, Commodity Boards and Export Development Authorities in India.  It was set up in 1965 by Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India to focus the efforts of all stakeholders engaged in promotion of trade from the country. FIEO exchanges business delegations, establishes MoUs with counterpart organizations overseas, and arranges exhibitions, catalogue shows abroad. It provides the crucial interface between International Trading community of India with the Central and State Governments, Financial Institutions, Ports, Railways, Surface Transport and all engaged in Export Trade Facilitation.  It directly and indirectly serves the interests of over 200,000 exporters from every Industry and Services sector in India.

    Guatemala emerged as India’s biggest trading partner in the Central American Region in 2021- 22 with bilateral trade of US$ 573.21 million which has now increased to US$693 in 2022-23, solidifying a rising trend. Pharmaceuticals, textiles (especially cotton yarn and fibers), engineering products, automobiles- two and three wheelers, motor vehicles/cars, auto components and parts, iron and steel, industrial machinery and parts, electrical machinery and equipment are the top products exported to Guatemala while India mainly imports Wood, wood charcoal, Coffee, aluminum scrap from Guatemala.

    The Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO), in collaboration with the Embassy of India in Guatemala and the Chamber of Commerce of Guatemala, is pleased to announce a Multi-Sectoral Business to Business between India and Guatemala. This event seeks to foster business collaboration between Indian manufacturing companies and Guatemalan importers, offering a space to explore business opportunities.

The collaboration between FIEO, the Embassy of India in Guatemala and the Chamber of Commerce has been fundamental for the organization of these Business-to-Business Meetings. Recognizing the significant potential of this event, the Chamber of Commerce has extended invitations to affiliated companies and the general public, resulting in substantial interest. Over 90 importing, distributing, or trading companies have already confirmed their participation, scheduling business appointments for the upcoming meetings.

    The scheduled B2B Meeting will facilitate exploration of potential trade opportunities, allowing businesses from both countries to identify areas of mutual interest and collaboration. The delegation will gain insights of Guatemalan markets, helping them understand regulatory environments, consumer behavior, and market trends, which is crucial for successful market entry.     GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): The Embassy of India in Guatemala marked the 75th Republic Day with the traditional Flag Hoisting Ceremony in the morning and organizing a grand National Day Reception in the evening.

    The day commenced with a Flag Hoisting Ceremony at the Embassy premises in the morning, where Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra unfurled the Indian Tricolor. Chief Guest Mayor of Xela H.E. Mr. Juan Fernando Lopez, alongside other local dignitaries, members of the Indian community, ITEC students, and friends of India in Guatemala attended the event. Following the Flag Hoisting, Ambassador Dr. Mohapatra shared excerpts from the speech of Hon’ble President of India Smt. Draupadi Murmu, conveying greetings to all present and highlighting the historical significance of the day and India’s unwavering commitment to democratic values.

    The event continued with captivating cultural performances by local Indian community members. Notably, two Letters of Intent were signed during the ceremony between the Municipality of Xela and Indian company Lakshmi Capital, outlining plans for the supply of 800 buses and the initiation of a 75 MW Solar power plant in Xela. Mayor of Xela, H.E. Juan Fernando Lopez, and Mr. Wendal Rodas, CMD of Lakshmi Capital, signed the LoIs, marking significant strides toward the infrastructural betterment of Xela. Further, Embassy also organized donation of 10 computers by another Indian company in Guatemala, 24X7 to the school Mixta el Tablon in Sololá to enhance the educational betterment. The event concluded with a vibrant Garba Dance Celebration to mark the inscription of this popular Gujarati Dance on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. Indian snacks were served to the attendees in the end.

    In the evening, the Embassy hosted a National Day Reception to further celebrate the momentous occasion. The event began with the lightning of lamp by prominent dignitaries. The event brought together a diverse gathering, including newly designated Ministers and Vice Ministers of the new Government, newly elected Congressmen, Mayors, members of diplomatic corps, prominent local dignitaries, government officials, and members of the business and cultural communities.

    The National Day Reception showcased cultural performances, highlighting India’s rich heritage through vibrant Bollywood dance and music. The venue’s colorful display of the Indian flag added to the festive ambiance, symbolizing the enduring cultural bonds between India and Guatemala. Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra delivered his remarks, recounting India’s democratic journey and emphasizing the strengthened bilateral relations with Guatemala. He announced a substantial investment by Indian companies in the Central American region, with a significant portion earmarked for Guatemala. The Ambassador disclosed plans for a proposed Metro line project and the supply of 5000 buses in El Salvador, along with a substantial investment of US$1200 million in Xela, Guatemala. Two Letters of Intent were signed earlier in the day, with two more signed during the National Day Reception by the Mayor of Xela and CMD of Lakshmi Capital. The remaining two LoIs are scheduled for signing in Xela on January 29, 2024.

    At the end, Indian cuisines, specially curated for the event, was served to the guests. The reception provided a platform for fostering diplomatic ties, cultural exchanges, and discussions on potential areas of collaboration for the future. The site survey is being designed to intricately assess and analyze potential locations that can optimally harness solar energy for efficient power generation. This thorough examination includes an in-depth analysis of solar irradiance levels, topography, weather patterns, and environmental considerations. Central America recognizes the significance of advanced technologies like electronics, defense, aeronautics, and radar technology for regional development. Local companies understand the potential of these sectors in improving connectivity, communication networks, and access to digital services, fostering economic growth, education, and healthcare. Governments emphasize enhancing defense and security infrastructure, with growing interest in aeronautics and radar technology for transportation, disaster management, and surveillance. Acknowledging these needs, the Embassy of India facilitated a Business Meet on January 12, 2024, connecting local authorities, companies, and experts in these crucial sectors.

    In a concerted effort to disseminate crucial information and catalyze the advancement of indigenous technology, the Embassy proactively sought the participation of a representative from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to address a gathering of Guatemala companies in the sector of telecommunication, defense systems, engineering goods and security systems. Representative from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) delivered a succinct presentation, acquainting the audience with BEL’s diversified expertise in areas such as homeland security solutions, smart cities, e-governance solutions, space electronics (including satellite integration), energy storage products (including e-vehicle charging stations and solar), network and cyber security, railways and metro solutions, airport solutions, Electronic Voting Machines, telecom products, passive night vision devices, medical electronics, composites, and software solutions.     Under the astute guidance of Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, the Indian Ambassador to Guatemala, the Embassy of India has played an active and pivotal role in organizing such insightful events aimed at disseminating valuable technology to the host country. It has been learned that the Embassy, in collaboration with Lakshmi Capital, an Indian company, is spearheading various infrastructural projects in the region, anticipating an investment of USD 6 billion. Advanced negotiations with the Government of El Salvador have resulted in the initiation of a metro line project and the supply of 5000 buses, representing a substantial investment of USD 1 billion. A Letter of Intent has already been signed between the parties. Similar discussions are underway with the Government of Guatemala for projects such as a metro line in Guatemala City, a train line across the country, and solar power initiatives. Furthermore, the Embassy is actively engaged in progressing discussions and is on the verge of signing a Letter of Intent with the Mayor of Xela for projects encompassing cable cars, the supply of 700 buses, installation of a hydraulic turbine, and project on solid waste management. These collaborative initiatives not only bolster the growing bilateral relations between India and Guatemala but also leverage India’s robust technological capabilities to fortify these ties.

    Guatemala City (TIP): In a significant stride toward strengthening infrastructure and economic development in El Salvador, Lakshmi Capital, a Finance Company, and the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation of the Republic of El Salvador signed a Letter of Intent in San Salvador on 4th December 2023. The signing ceremony, graced by the presence of Ambassador of India in Guatemala, Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, underscores the commitment to initiate a transformative project – the development of a metro line in San Salvador. The metro line project aims to invigorate the economy and modernize transportation infrastructure in the country. Following a comprehensive pre-feasibility study, the decision was made to embark on the creation of a subway system in San Salvador, leveraging international investment for optimal outcomes.

    The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation will play a pivotal role by providing pre-feasibility analyses, designs, legal frameworks, and mechanisms essential for the successful implementation of the project. Lakshmi Capital, in turn, will contribute technical expertise and investment mechanisms to facilitate the development, construction, implementation, operation, management, and maintenance of the Massive Transport System of Passengers in the Metropolitan Area of San Salvador. The event saw participation from 50 prominent dignitaries, companies, journalists, and friends of India who gathered in person. Dr. Preeti Apte Upasani, MD in Radiodiagnosis and a master in Yogashastra, conducted a comprehensive virtual talk from India. Her presentation delved into the myriad benefits of Ayurveda and its practical applications in daily life. Dr. Upasani is also a certified Therapeutic Yoga Consultant by AYUSH YCB, showcasing her interest in integrative medicines, with a special focus on Indian traditional medicines, particularly Ayurveda. The celebration witnessed engaging presentations from representatives of eminent Indian and Guatemalan companies, including Dabur, Organica Guatemala, Dunar, and Yoga Point.     GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): As Indian corporates line up significant investments in the oil, mining, IT and pharmaceutical sectors in the Central America and Latin American Countries, the Indian Embassy in Guatemala organised a visit to the country by Dr. S.V. Anchan, Chairman of the Safesea Group. The Safesea Group is a global provider of shipping and logistics services with headquarters in the USA, offices across North America, Europe, and Asia, and a presence in over 100 countries.

    During his visit to Guatemala from 31 October -2 November 2023, Dr. Anchan attended Business Meet organized by the Embassy on 31st October 2023. He shared his insights into his company’s prospects in the Central American region. Dr. Anchan highlighted the company’s interest in expanding its operations to the Central American market, with Guatemala as a strategic hub.     GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): The Embassy of India in Guatemala in collaboration with Eye Foundation of America, Hospital Privado in Peten and CONJUVE Guatemala jointly hosted eye camp in Peten, Guatemala from 6-9 November 2023. The camps aimed to provide much-needed cataract eye surgeries to patients from Peten and surrounding areas who have previously participated in Embassy’s preliminary ophthalmology camp in April 2023, where around 400 patients received essential eye assessments to identify those in need of further medical attention. During the eye camp in Peten, a significant milestone was achieved as a high number of patients underwent life-changing eye surgeries.

    This mission builds upon the foundation laid during the Embassy’s preliminary ophthalmology camp in April 2023. During this preliminary camp, the focus was on offering basic eye medical assistance to patients. It was also a critical phase for identifying individuals in need of further eye treatment, including essential eye surgery. Organized in two phases, this eye camp reflected the unwavering commitment of these organizations to improve the visual health and overall quality of life of the patients in Peten. Careful planning and execution were paramount, ensuring that those in need received prompt and comprehensive eye care.     The preliminary eye camp in April and surgical procedures from 6-9 November 2023 were carried out by the Eye Foundation of America, led by Dr. V.K. Raju, accompanying by Dr. Rakesh Shakya, along with a team of Guatemalan professional ophthalmologists and an anaesthesiologist, all of whom are generously offering their services free of charge. In a remarkable display of community support, Dr. Edgar Lopez, General Physician from Herrera Llerandi Hospital in Guatemala City, offered his local expertise to the endeavor. He joined Dr. Marroquin, an ophthalmologist from Peten Hospital, in contributing to the eye camp’s success. The eye camp took place at Hospital Privado Universitario de Peten.

    The Hospital Privado Universitario de Peten’s role in partnering the cause was commendable and its invaluable in facilitating this eye camp to help the needy and poor people to get essential eye surgeries. The hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive pre-medical check-ups before surgeries underscores its dedication to patient well-being. Furthermore, the seamless arrangement of essential medical equipment, the setup of advanced microscopes for surgical procedures, and the meticulous logistics coordination within the hospital played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of this noble initiative.     GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): The Embassy of India, Guatemala City, in collaboration with Plexconcil (Plastic & Polymer Industry) from India, successfully hosted two Buyer Seller Meets on November 3, 2023. First event took place in the morning at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Guatemala City wherein a delegation of Indian companies, led by Mr. Heman Minocha, Chairman of Plexconcil engaged in face-to-face interactions with local Guatemalan companies. Additionally, the team conducted a virtual Buyer Seller Meet with companies from El Salvador and Honduras in the evening. The BSM featured physical participation from over 45-50 companies from Guatemala along with 12 participating companies from India who made presentations of their respective plastic products. The evening BSM was attended by approximately 40 companies from El Salvador and Honduras.

    The event was chaired by H.E. Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, the Ambassador of India along with Mr. Hemant Minocha, Chairman of Plexconcil; Mr. Sribash Dasmohapatra, Executive Director of Plexconcil, India; Mr. Ing Marcos Aroany from AGEXPORT, Guatemala and Ms. Mellany Diaz, Executive Director of COGUAPLAST in the morning.     In Tegucigalpa, Honduras, a remarkable Yoga Event was held at Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Francisco Morazán (UPNFM) on 20th June 2023. Around 150 yoga participants from different parts of Honduras attended the event, showcasing the growing interest and engagement of the local community.     The Embassy continued its efforts to organise Yoga events in different iconic places of Central America and one of the most prominent places was in the City of Antigua, which has a history of more than 500 years old. On 21st June 2023, the Embassy of India in Guatemala chose the iconic Santa Catalina Arch in Antigua, Guatemala as the venue for a captivating yoga event. The arch, a magnificent symbol of Guatemala’s rich art and cultural heritage, provided a mesmerizing setting for the participants to engage in yoga practices and embrace a serene ambiance. With the participation of approximately 100 yoga enthusiasts and local Guatemalans, the event not only celebrated the International Day of Yoga but also aimed to promote Guatemala’s cultural legacy and foster the integration of yoga into the community’s lifestyle. It was a harmonious blend of cultural appreciation and holistic well-being.

It is an opportunity for the two democratic nations to come together, strengthen their bond, and celebrate the shared values of holistic wellness and mindfulness. Through this event, the Embassy aims to deepen the existing ties between India and El Salvador while showcasing the transformative power of yoga in promoting physical, mental, and spiritual harmony.

    GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): Compostable packaging industry pioneer Yash Pakka Limited has embarked on a significant venture by establishing its largest overseas plant in Guatemala, Central America. This milestone has been marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Yash Pakka Limited and major sugar companies in Guatemala to procure bagasse, the primary raw material used in its products. Anticipated to commence operations by mid-2025, the US $250 Million plant will have a daily production capacity of 400 tons, focusing on flexible packaging and molded fiber products.
    In recognition of this momentous occasion, the Government of Guatemala organized an official ceremony at the National Palace on May 23, 2023, to honor Yash Pakka. The event was attended by President Alejandro Giammattei, Minister of Economy Janio Rosales, and the Indian Ambassador to Guatemala, Dr. Manoj Kumar Mahapatra.     GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): On 24 May 2023, a significant event took place at the Embassy of India in Guatemala, where Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra officially handed over a consignment of four varieties millet seeds to the Agricultural Minister of Guatemala, Mr. Edgar René De León Moreno. The handover ceremony was organized at the Embassy Residence and was attended by Mr. Guillermo De León Agreda, Cooperation Director, Mr. Rafael Oroxon, International Cooperation; and Mr. Rafael Oroxon, General Manager of the Institute of Agricultural Science from Guatemalan side, including representatives from the Embassy.
