    Padma Shri HR Shah honored at Inauguration of new Executive of IAPC

    The Indo American Press Club (IAPC) held the inauguration of its new Executive Committee on March 4 here in the presence of community leaders and officials. Mr H.R. Shah, Chairman and CEO of TV Asia who was conferred with Padma Shri this year, was warmly felicitated at the gala event at Antun’s by Minar.

    Professor Indrajit S Saluja, editor-publisher of The Indian Panorama, was sworn in as the new President, taking over from Parveen Chopra, Managing Editor of The South Asian Times and The Asian Era. Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos administered the oath of office to the new IAPC office-bearers including George Eapen (General Secretary) and Biju Chacko (Treasurer).

    Prof Saluja, in his acceptance speech, talked about the power of the media which can make a President, as well as bring down a presidency. Referring to the cover headline of the souvenir distributed on the occasion, he said he believes that “The bedrock of democracy is journalism. And the bedrock of journalism is facts. And facts alone.”

    Ginsmon Zacharia, founder Chairman of IPAC who has interests in print and TV, stepped down after shepherding the organization for three years. The new Chairman Dr. Babu Stephen publishes two community newspapers from the Washington DC area: Express India and India This Week, and is the CEO of DC Healthcare Inc, and president of SM Reality LLC.

    Joining in IAPC honoring Mr HR Shah for his Padma Shri were Deputy Consul General of India Manoj Mohapatra, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and many community leaders. Dr Dattatreyudu Nori introduced Mr Shah, his longtime friend.

    Mr Shah, in his speech, dwelt on his initial struggles in media but said he did not give up. Under him, TV Asia is today the largest TV network for the Indian community in America. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for conferring on him one of the highest civilian awards of India. He lauded Prof. Saluja for felicitating him because it was media people honoring a mediaman. He also announced that TV Asia will be launching in India soon.

    Dr. Sudhir Parikh, Chairman of Parikh Worldwide Media, while felicitating Mr. Shah, praised him as a man of vision and action who made it to the top with grit and determination.

    Both Dr Parikh and Dr Nori are previous recipients of Padma Shri.

    Comptroller Maragos underscored the role of media in a democracy and lauded Indian American media for doing a great job to promote interests of the community and serving the great American nation in the best fashion. He also revealed his intention to run for the office of Nassau County Executive.

    In his keynote address, Jehangir Khattak, Co-Director, Center for Community and Ethnic Media, CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, spoke about how he has been fighting for more government dollars for the ethnic media, including desi media.

    Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, Deputy Consul General, New York, rushed from an engagement in Boston to preside over the event.

    A book, ‘Musings on Medicine, Myth, and History – India’s Legacy’, by Dr. VK Raju and his daughter, Dr. Leela Raju was launched on the occasion. Through his Eye Foundation of America, Dr Raju is dedicated to eradicating childhood blindness in India and elsewhere.

    The roaster of entertainment included a skit by New Jersey street theater group, Prayas. Kalpita Chakote presented a classical dance, and Bhangra group Soormay, of St. John’s College students, gave an electrifying bhangra performance.

    IAPC, with six active chapters in the US and Canada, has organized three successful annual international media conferences in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut over the past three years. A highlight of the conference last year was a presidential debate with representatives from Democratic and Republican sides.

    HICKSVILLE, NY (TIP): The Indo-American Press Club (IAPC) will inaugurate its new executive committee at a gala at Antun’s by Minar here on March 4 in the presence of media personalities and community.

    Prof. Indrajit Singh Saluja, Editor-Publisher of The Indian Panorama, will take over as President from Parveen Chopra, Managing Editor of The South Asian Times. The Chief Guest, Hon. George Maragos, Comptroller of Nassau County, is set to administer the oath of office to the 2017 office-bearers, including Eapen George as General Secretary and Biju Chacko as Treasurer.

    Under founder and chairman, Ginsmon Zacharia, IAPC has grown from strength to strength.

    It has organized three successful annual international conferences in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. A highlight of the conference last year was a presidential debate with representatives from Democratic and Republican sides.Prof. Indrajit S Saluja moderated the debate.

    IPAC has six active chapters in America and Canada. The Atlanta chapter celebrated India’s Republic Day this January in a big way. Last year, the Houston chapter hosted a debate and discussion on the presidential election to increase participation of the Indian community in the political process.

    The Indo American Press Club (IAPC) celebrated India’s 68th Republic Day as it formally launched its Atlanta chapter on January 28 at the Global Mall.

    The event brought together top community leaders of different faiths, and ethnic groups on a single platform as Indians to celebrate the Republic Day.

    “We normally have gatherings in our religious or language based groups. But this was on a wider and higher level platform, where we symbolically expressed our unity in diversity as sons and daughters of the great Nation of Bharat,” said Mustafa Ajmeri, social activist who was one of the honorees at the event.

    Nagesh Singh, Consul General of India in Atlanta, was the Chief Guest. Charlotte Nash, chair of Commissioners of Gwinnet County, was the Guest of Honor.

    After the Presidential address by Dominic Chackonal, IAPC President of Atlanta Chapter, prominent Indian Americans which included   Antony Thaliath, Executive Director Gandhi Foundation USA, Narender Reddy, Political Activist and Community leader, and Veena Rao, Editor of NRI Pulse newspaper spoke on the occasion.

    Honoring and recognizing prominent Indo Americans in different fields was appreciated by one and all. Life Achievement award was given to Dr. Sujatha Reddy. Humanitarian Award went to Dr. Jay Sampath. Businessman of the year was Satwant Singh, CEO of Doaba Consulting. Entrepreneur Award was bagged by Joy PI, CEO of Joy TV. Award of Honor was given to social activists Mustafa Ajmeri and Sabu Chemmalakuzhy. Media Excellence Award went to Parthiv N Parekh of Khabar Magazine.

    Winner of Photography contest was Siby Karikkampally and Essay writing competitionwinner was Joshua Mathew.

    A book written by poet Subini Lawrence was released on the occasion. The paintings by the famous artist Vinod Sharma added color to the event.

    IAPC is New York based with several chapters in USA and Canada.

    NEW YORK (TIP): The Indo American Press Club (IAPC) is hosting its 3rd International Media Conference on October 8-9 at Hilton Stamford Hotel in Connecticut with leading media professionals, dignitaries and lawmakers from US, Canada and India.

    Speaking at the inaugural session will be India’s Deputy Consul General in New York, Mr. Manoj K. Mohapatra, H.R. Shah, Chairman, TV Asia, Dr. Ajay Lodha, AAPI National President, and Thomas Abraham, Chairman, GOPIO.

    Over 100 senior print, TV and web professionals will deliberate on challenges and opportunities facing the media.

    A highlight of the conference is a ‘Presidential Debate’ on Oct 9 between Prof. AD Amar, Founder of Indian Americans for Trump 2016, and Congressional candidate from New Jersey’s 7th district, Peter Jacob. The debate will be moderated by Prof Indrajit Saluja, Chief Editor-Publisher of The Indian Panorama newspaper.

    Noted media guests and dignitaries flying down from India include Kodiyeri Balakrishnan (CPM’s Kerala chief), Abdul Wahab (Rajya Sabha member), Dr. J Alexander IAS (Ex-Karnataka minister), P.T Chacko, R.S. Babu, Pradeep Pillai, Mangad Ratnakaran, MV Nikesh Kumar, Meera Nair, J.S Indukumar and N.R Harikumar.

    There will also be sessions in Malayalam for guests from India.

    At the awards gala dinner on Oct 9 the IAPC souvenir will be released and the IAPC Sathkarma Award announced for a social activist from India, Theruvoram Murugan.

    Indo-American Press Club holds presidential debate in Houston

    HOUSTON, TX (TIP): The Indo-American Press Club -Houston Chapter recently organized and hosted a debate and discussion on the upcoming Presidential election. Its purpose was to impart political education, enhance political awareness and increase participation of the Indian community in the political process. The presidential discussion with representatives from both the Trump and Hillary campaigns, held at Stafford Civic Center in Houston on Sept 11, was attended by a large number of Indian Americans, political personalities and community leaders. IAPC is a non-profit formed three years ago to create a common platform for media professionals in USA and Canada, thus giving them a powerful voice in the media world and larger society.

    The event also worked as a soft launch of IAPC’s Houston chapter with Easo Jacob as its president. In his welcome remarks, he said, the presidential debate followed the motto of the press club, which is “Informed Action Promotes Change.”

    After Mike ONeill, President of The Houston Press Club, opened the event, Cyriac Scaria, IAPC National Committee member, spoke on “Path to Mainstream,” stressing why Indian Americans should shed their shyness about politics and participate actively in the process.

    Some of the dignitaries present included Hon. Judge Joel Clouser, HCC Trustee Neeta Sane, Ken Mathew – Pro Tem Mayor of Stafford, Dr. Kendell Baker -State Representative Candidate, Len Swanson -Advisor to Donald Trump, Democratic Party Fort Bend County Chairwoman Cynthia Gyn, and State Representative Candidate Sarah DeMerchant.

    Presentations were made by the panel of political experts favoring the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate Donald Trump. The debate was moderated by Attorney Scott Brasington. Republican side included Dr. Kendell Baker, Dr. Nik Nikam, Ramesh Cherivirala, Sangeeta Dua, and Len Swanson, and Democratic side was helmed by State Representative Ron Raynolds, KP George, Amee Patel, and veteran journalist Jawahar Malhotra.

    The partisan and fiery rhetoric from both sides excited the audience to help them to contrast the two candidates and vote their conscience in the election Nov 8.

    The entertainment during the evening was provided by singer Grady Long who sang several songs in different languages.

    The evening concluded with a vote of thanks by Babu Jesudas of IAPC, and was followed by dinner. Lakshmi Peter emceed the event.

    About 40 prominent Indo-American media professionals in the greater Houston area were recognized at the event, which was supported by other community organizations.

    Afterwards, Len Swanson said in an email: “I felt I was successful in presenting and discussing privately with key Indian leaders and other guests as to why the GOP had more to offer to the Indian community given our mutual conservative and entrepreneurial values than the Democratic Socialists.

    “In fact I was the only speaker who was applauded mid-way through my presentation as I hit upon the key points that the Indian community here in Houston did come to the US ‘legally’ not ‘illegally’, that their community is especially a very successful model of ‘How to’ that other communities should emulate.”

    Peter Jacob is an Indian American community organizer with a master’s degree in social work who is running as Democratic candidate for US House from New Jersey’s GOP leaning District 7. He has been endorsed by Democratic leader Bernie Sanders, whose site praised the 30-year-old’s commitment to the community with these words: “Raised in Union, New Jersey, Peter Jacob understands how important a safe and caring community is to success. Through various community organizations, Peter has helped fight the ongoing scourges of child abuse, human trafficking, and disastrous Iraq War.” His campaign for healthcare reform, environmental sustainability, and immigrant integration also comes in for praise.

    NEW YORK (TIP): The Tristate Chapter of Indo American Press Club (IAPC) was inaugurated July 29 by Dilip Chauhan, Director of Southeast/Asian Affairs for Nassau County Comptroller, at a colorful meeting at Tyson Center in Floral Park, NY.

    During the meeting, the Chairman of IAPC Ginsmon Zacharia kicked off registration for its 3rd International Media Conference 2016, to be held at Toronto near Niagara Falls, Canada on October 8-10. Scores of prominent mediapersons, political, business leaders and community leaders from world over will participate in the conference. IAPC is undertaking activities to promote and encourage journalism students and citizen journalists by conducting competitions in areas such as writing and photography.

    During the conference, IAPC will also honor individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to society, making a positive difference. The conference will feature Seminars, Workshops, Discussion/Debate Forums presided by eminent journalists and writers, Photo Exhibition, Property Expo etc.

    NEW YORK (TIP): The Indo American Press Club (IAPC) swore in its new team at a well-attended ceremony on Long Island February 6.

    Leading media personalities who graced the event at Tyson Center in Floral Park included HR Shah of TV Asia, Dev Viswanath of ITV, Kamlesh Mehta, Chairman of Forsythe Media Group, and Prof Indrajit Saluja, chief editor of The Indian Panorama.

    IAPC’s new President Parveen Chopra, Managing Editor of The South Asian Times and The Asian Era, was inducted along with his team: Dr. Thomas Mathew Joys, columnist and novelist (Exec. Vice President); Korason Varghese, Editor, Jaihind Vartha (General Secretary); Vice Presidents Cyriac Scaria and Jilly Samuel, and Anil Mathew (Treasurer).

    The oath of office was administered by Ginsmon Zacharia, IAPC Chairman, after the inductees were introduced by Vineetha Nair, Vice Chairperson. Korason Varghese welcomed the gathering.

    In his keynote address, HR Shah, Chairman and CEO of TV Asia, promised his full support for IAPC as well as for all Indian media professionals in the USA. There is no competition between one media or media house and another, he said and urged visual and print media to work together. In his view, digital media may have affected print, but advertisers still seem to prefer the bang of print. He credited his incredible success to hard work and perseverance, and promised to stand by anyone who displays such qualities and a drive to excel.

    Kamlesh Mehta, Chairman of The South Asian Times, said IAPC has the capacity to grow very resourceful for the good of Indian American media fraternity. He complimented the new office bearers and wished them success.

    Dev Viswanath, Attorney and Vice President-Principal Legal Counsel of ITV Gold TV channel, lauded the growth and presence of Indian-American ethnic media and Indian-American professionals in mainstream US media. He challenged the media today to be vigilant in covering the different perspectives, even if they are less popular, so that viewers, readers, audiences can formulate their own opinions. And to create content that was non-political yet interesting and substantive.

    Prof Indrajit S Saluja, chief editor of The Indian Panorama, underlined the need for media to be fair and fearless even as it is like a second God, having the power to direct political winds, prompt thought provoking action and socio-economic awakening.

    Dr Ajay Lodha, President-Elect of AAPI, in his speech admired media influence in the modern world. Stating that the Indian community in the US is the highest educated and very well placed, he advocated all community organizations to work together to advance the community.

    In his presidential address, Parveen Chopra said that IAPC is a platform for all Indian ethnic media professionals — not just its members — and will raise their concerns and work to further their interests. While acknowledging that IAPC was founded by natives of Kerala, he pointed out that GOPIO, FIA, INOC and even AAPI were started by Malayalees, and became diverse in time as IAPC is becoming now.

    Shomik Chaudhuri, Vice President, Adforce North America, and former COO of Parikh Worldwide Media, gave a lucid presentation on harnessing digital marketing.

    Dr Thomas Joys elaborated on IAPC’s tie-ups with the Trivandrum Press Club and Kottayam Press Clubs in Kerala and that IAPC is launching an Online Journalism Course. He also laid out the benefits of new IPCC membership card. The ID cards were distributed to members at the event.

    The Satkarma Award 2016 was announced to be conferred on Murugan S at IAPC’s next annual conference to be held in October. He grew up in the streets but now rehabilitates the mentally challenged, physically impaired, impoverished and disowned individuals in Cochin, Kerala. Last October, social worker Daya Bai was presented the Satkarma Award at IAPC’s media conference at Clarion Hotel in Long Island, which attracted participants and presenters from India, Canada, Australia and UAE.

    Others who spoke at the induction ceremony included Jose Thayyil, editor of Kairali newspaper, Vinod Kearke, FOKANA Secretary, Rev Wilson Jose, Patron of Indian Christian Forum, Koshy Oommen, Treasurer, Kerala Chamber of Commerce, and Babu Jesudas, of IAPC Board.

    Anil Mathew offered vote of thanks. Jilly Samuel and Arun Gopalakrishnan were the MCs. Manjari Parikh gave an energetic dance performance.

    IAPC thanked HR Shah of TV Asia, Kamlesh Mehta of The South Asian Times and Darshan Singh Bagga, a builder-developer, for their spontaneous generous contributions.

    Indo-American Press Club holds Media Conference & Awards Function in New York

    NEW YORK: Eminent journalists and media experts from the US, Canada, India, Australia and the UAE will hold an International Media Conference organised by the Indo-American Press Club (IAPC) from Oct 9 through 12 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, Long Island, New York.

    The Indo-American Press Club provides an effective platform for Indian American journalists and media professionals to associate and network with a sense of belonging, according to the media release.

    It is designed as a uniquely valuable professional development opportunity, featuring educational seminars and workshops, discussing and analyzing new trends and methods with a rare insight into the work of media across the world, it said.

    Public Works Minister V K Ibrahim Kunju has been selected for the Minister of Excellence Award. The Karmashreshta Award is for social worker Daya Bhai and the Sadbhavana Award for Boby Chemmannur.

    Ibrahim Kunju has been chosen for the modernisation activities related to the development of basic infrastructure in the state for the past four years. Daya Bhai has been chosen, taking into account her initiatives among the adivasis in Northern India.
