Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer star as India beat Sri Lanka by 62 runs to take 1-0 lead

Lucknow (TIP)-Ishan Kishan gave a glimpse of his enormous potential with a 56-ball-89 before the bowlers joined the party in India’s clinical 62-run demolition of Sri Lanka in the first T20I to take a 1-0 lead in the three-game series here on Thursday, Feb 24.

This was also India’s longest winning streak in T20Is which has now gone up to 10 matches. Asked to take first strike, Kishan was unstoppable at the top as he blasted a blistering 56-ball 89, while Shreyas Iyer provided the late charge with an unbeaten 57 as India racked up a massive 199 for 2. The Indian bowlers, led by Bhuveshwar Kumar (2/9 in 2 overs) and Venkatesh Iyer (2/36), then provided the finishing touch, limiting Sri Lanka to 137 for 6 in 20 overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal (1/11) and Ravindra Jadeja (1/28) also claimed one wicket each. The victory extended India’s winning streak to 10 T20 games.

For Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka regained some confidence with an unbeaten 47-ball 53 but he didn’t get any support from the other batters.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma became the highest scorer in all T20Is after his innings of 44 as he surpassed Martin Guptill (3299) to now go onto 3307.

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (67 wickets) have now gone past Jasprit Bumrah as India’s top wicket-taker in T20Is.

Defending the total, Bhuvneshwar provided India the perfect start as he cleaned up in-form opener Pathum Nissanka (0) of the first ball of the innings before returning to remove the other opener Kamil Mishara (13) cheaply.

India’s fielding was not up to the mark with ventakesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer spilling chances off Kamila and Charith Asalanka in 3rd and 6th overs respectively but it didn’t matter as the Lankan batters couldn’t use the chances.

Ventakesh got rid of Janith Liyanage (11), while comeback man Ravindra Jadeja had Dinesh Chandimal (10) stumped in the 10th over as Sri Lanka were down 51 for 4 in 10th over.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka’s (3) stay lasted six balls as Chahal overtook Bumrah to become India’s leading wicket taker (67) in T20Is.

With the required run-rate hovering over 20, Asalanka then provided some respectibility to the chase.

Earlier Kishan, who failed to capitalise on his starts in the preceding white-ball series against West Indies, finally lived up to his multi-million dollar IPL tag with a whirlwind innings studded with 10 hits to the fence and three sixes.

The 23-year-old from Jharkhand forged a 111-run innings for the opening wicket with his skipper Rohit Sharma (44 off 32) to put India on course for a formidable total after being invited to bat first.

Iyer then grabbed the opportunity with both hands, smashing five fours and two sixes in 28 balls to take India to a huge total.

Ishan Kishan was the aggressor among the two openers as he exploded in the third over, making Chamika Karunaratne pay for erring in his line and length with three boundaries as India amassed 15 runs from the over. Lahiru Kumara bowled with a lot of pace but Ishan came up with two good-looking shots — one a pull on the front foot which went over the ropes and the other one a flick across the mid-wicket boundary.

  • India’s T20 World Cup squad: R Ashwin picked, MS Dhoni named mentor

Four years after he was discarded from India’s T20I set-up, R Ashwin has forced his way back in, named in the squad of 15 for the 2021 T20 World Cup. In another surprise move, the BCCI has roped in former captain MS Dhoni as the team mentor specifically for this tournament. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket last August, was appointed to “provide support and direction” to the Indian team management led by head coach Ravi Shastri. So said BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

The main group of 15 comprises six specialist batters, three allrounders, three specialist spinners and three specialist fast bowlers. The selection panel led by former India fast bowler Chetan Sharma also named the trio of Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur as reserves, who will act as injury or Covid-19 replacements.

Among the notable absentees were Shikhar Dhawan, who captained India in their short limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka recently, and lead legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Instead, the selectors opted for mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy and legspinner Rahul Chahar, who, along with Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Axar Patel are heading into their the first World Cup.

Suryakumar shines with bat as India level series

Ahmedabad: (TIP): India won the fourth T20 International against England by eight runs to level the five-match series at 2-2. Ishan Kishan the other night, and Suryakumar Yadav on Thursday, March 18. India’s T20 specialists don’t waste any time to find their feet in international cricket and keep sending reminders why they should be playing more regularly. Dropped for the third T20I without getting to face a ball in his debut game, Suryakumar top-scored with 57 in his maiden outing with the bat, an innings that showed what he could offer to the side. His knock was one of the highlights in India’s win over England in the fourth T20I at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which ensured an exciting finish in the fifth and final match on Saturday with the series locked 2-2.

Suryakumar got the opportunity on Thursday only because Ishan had a groin injury. Taking his spot at No 3, the 30-year-old pulled the first ball he faced off Jofra Archer for six over fine-leg. It wasn’t an instinctive shot. Having experienced such countless situations in the IPL, Suryakumar fully expected the length that Archer would deliver. And as the pacer obliged, the Mumbaikar merely responded.

A batsman who should have broken into the side at least a year ago, Suryakumar is at the peak of his prowess in a format, in which he has been so dominant. Unlike the rest of the options, India have to fill in the middle-order slot, Surykumar’s range of shots are unparalleled. For a batsman, who has mostly batted at No 4 and 5 during the middle overs, he has an IPL strike-rate of 134.57. It is his ability to manufacture boundary balls in the middle-overs while maintaining the momentum given by the openers and lay a foundation for the finishers that make him a precious talent in T20s. His other prized asset is his ability to steady the ship when the team struggles without affecting the scoring rate.

With just six months to go for the T20 World Cup, India have finally given him an opportunity to claim a spot. In a team where competition is tough, there is little space for Suryakumar to take time to find his feet. Sanju Samson, who was unable to make most of the opportunities he got in Australia, finds himself

discarded for this series. And maybe all those times he spent waiting for the call has only made Suryakumar hungrier than ever. He looked unstoppable until a debatable umpiring decision sent him back. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant ensured Suryakumar’s innings didn’t go waste as they took India to 185-8, their highest total this series.

And defending the total, England came hard at India. Jason Roy, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow got starts and looked threatening, but somehow the hosts’ attack found ways to get wickets when they needed the most as England wilted under pressure to keep the series alive.
