U.S. Federal Communications Commission scraps net neutrality rules

WASHINGTON (TIP): The U.S. Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines on December 14 to repeal Obama era landmark rules aimed at ensuring a free and open internet, setting up a court fight over a move that could recast the digital landscape.

New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has already announced that he will lead a multistate lawsuit to stop the rollback of net neutrality.

Schneiderman released a statement which read, “The FCC’s vote to rip apart net neutrality is a blow to New York consumers, and to everyone who cares about a free and open internet. The FCC just gave Big Telecom an early Christmas present, by giving internet service providers yet another way to put corporate profits over consumers. Today’s rollback will give ISPs new ways to control what we see, what we do, and what we say online. That’s a threat to the free exchange of ideas that’s made the Internet a valuable asset in our democratic process.

Today’s new rule would enable ISPs to charge consumers more to access sites like Facebook and Twitter and give them the leverage to degrade high quality of video streaming until and unless somebody pays them more money. Even worse, today’s vote would enable ISPs to favor certain viewpoints over others.

New Yorkers deserve the right to a free and open Internet. That’s why we will sue to stop the FCC’s illegal rollback of net neutrality.

Today’s vote also follows a public comment process that was deeply corrupted, including two million comments that stole the identities of real people. This is a crime under New York law – and the FCC’s decision to go ahead with the vote makes a mockery of government integrity and rewards the very perpetrators who scammed the system to advance their own agenda.

This is not just an attack on the future of our internet. It’s an attack on all New Yorkers, and on the integrity of every American’s voice in government – and we will fight back.”

The approval of FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s proposal marks a victory for internet service providers like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon Communications and hands them power over what content consumers can access.

Democrats, Hollywood and companies like Google parent Alphabet and Facebook had urged Mr. Pai, a Republican appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump, to keep the Obama-era rules barring service providers from blocking, slowing access to or charging more for certain content.

Consumer advocates and trade groups representing content providers have planned a legal challenge aimed at preserving those rules.

The meeting was evacuated before the vote for about 10 minutes due to an unspecified security threat, and resumed after sniffer dogs checked the room.

FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, a Democrat, said in the run-up to the vote that Republicans were handing the keys to the Internet to a handful of multi-billion-dollar corporations.

Mr. Pai has argued that the 2015 rules were heavy handed and stifled competition and innovation among service providers. “The internet wasn’t broken in 2015. We weren’t living in a digital dystopia. To the contrary, the internet is perhaps the one thing in American society we can all agree has been a stunning success,” he said on December 14.

The FCC voted 3-2 to repeal the rules. Consumers are unlikely to see immediate changes resulting from the rule change, but smaller startups worry the lack of restrictions could drive up costs or lead to their content being blocked.

Internet service providers say they will not block or throttle legal content but that they may engage in paid prioritization. They say consumers will see no change and argue that the largely unregulated internet functioned well in the two decades before the 2015 order.

    WHAT EXACTLY IS NET NEUTRALITY?

The net neutrality rules were approved by the FCC in 2015 amid an outpouring of online support. The intention was to keep the internet open and fair.

Under the rules, internet service providers are required to treat all online content the same. They can’t deliberately speed up or slow down traffic from specific websites or apps, nor can they put their own content at an advantage over rivals.

To take a classic example, this means Comcast can’t just choose to slow down a service like Netflix (NFLX) to make its own streaming video service more competitive, nor can it try to squeeze Netflix to pay more money to be part of a so-called internet fast lane.

As Michael Cheah, general counsel at video site Vimeo, previously told CNNMoney: the point of the rules is “allowing consumers to pick the winners and losers and not [having] the cable companies make those decisions for them.”

WHY IS NET NEUTRALITY SUCH A BIG DEAL?

If there’s one thing that both sides can agree on, it’s that the internet is increasingly central to our lives. Any change to how it’s regulated is a hot button issue. (Remember the uproar over repealing internet privacy protections earlier this year?)

“Everyone uses the internet, and everyone uses these tech platforms,” Michelle Connolly, a former FCC official who supports Pai, previously told CNNMoney. “So, issues that are coming up right now, people are seeing from a very personal perspective.”

SO HOW WILL INTERNET PROVIDERS BE REGULATED?

The FCC is doing away with rules barring internet providers from blocking or slowing down access to online content. The FCC would also eliminate some rule barring providers from prioritizing their own content.

In the absence of a firm ban on these actions, providers will be required to publicly disclose any instance of blocking, throttling or paid prioritization. It will then be evaluated based on whether or not the activity is anti-competitive.

As part of this shift, oversight of internet protections will shift from the FCC to the Federal Trade Commission.

Maureen K. Ohlhausen, the acting head of the FTC, said in a statement Monday that the agency is “committed to ensuring that Internet service providers live up to the promises they make to consumers.”

But consumer advocacy groups are less than optimistic.

“Not only is the FCC eliminating basic net neutrality rules, but it’s joining forces with the FTC to say it will only act when a broadband provider is deceiving the public,” Chris Lewis, VP at Public Knowledge, a nonprofit that focuses on the open internet, said in a statement this week. “This gives free reign to broadband providers to block or throttle your broadband service as long as they inform you of it.”

AND HOW WILL REPEALING NET NEUTRALITY AFFECT ME?

First, it’s important to say what won’t happen: Billion-dollar services like Netflix are not going to disappear overnight without net neutrality. They have large enough audiences and bank accounts to survive in a changing regulatory landscape.

Instead, net neutrality advocates worry how repeal will impact the next Netflix. Upstart companies may struggle to strike deals with providers and pay up to have their content delivered faster. That could fundamentally alter the future internet landscape.

The repeal could change how customers are billed for services, both for good and bad. T-Mobile, for example, was criticized by net neutrality supporters for effectively making it cheaper for customers to stream videos from Netflix and HBO, putting other video services at a disadvantage.

Without net neutrality, internet providers may pursue similar offers more aggressively, which would likely be viewed as a positive by consumers looking to save money on their streaming media.

Yet, some fear it’s also possible internet providers will one day begin charging customers more to access services like Netflix that are currently included as part of your monthly bill.

SO, IS THIS A DONE DEAL?

Not quite. It’s very like this issue could end up being decided in court, or perhaps even by legislation in Congress.

“Whenever we do anything big and major, people go to court,” a senior FCC official said last month. “I certainly would not rule that out.”

‘SNAG-HIT’ DRONE CROSSES LAC, CHINA PROTESTS

NEW DELHI/BEIJING (TIP): An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the Indian Army crashed around Doklam in the Sikkim sector after it “crossed” the border into China following a technical problem, prompting Beijing to lodge a diplomatic protest with India.

Sources in Delhi said the Indian security forces in Nathu La informed the Chinese army over the hotline about the UAV crossing the Line of Actual Control (LAC) after a technical problem.

The Ministry of Defence said its border security personnel immediately alerted their Chinese counterparts to locate the UAV. The Chinese later reverted with its location. It, however, did not give details of when the UAV had crashed but sources said the incident occurred 10 days ago. The incident comes to light days before Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Delhi to attend the Russia-India-China trilateral meeting on December 11.

The MoD said the exact cause of the incident is under investigation. “An Indian UAV, which was on a regular training mission inside the Indian territory, lost contact with the ground control due to some technical problem and crossed over (to) the LAC in the Sikkim sector,” it said.

Gift of Life India Celebrating 15 years of launching the Gift of Life initiative for saving over 6,000 children since then

NEW YORK (TIP): A big idea was born in 1974 and every big idea has a small beginning. In 1974, Rotary District 7250 brought a 5-year old named Grace Agwaru on an intercontinental voyage from Uganda to New York. Grace suffered from a hole between the two lower chambers of her small but strong heart. On November 15, 1974 surgeons at Saint Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York successfully operated on little Grace. That is how the Gift of Life was born and today it is a worldwide Rotary International Service Program responsible for approximately 10,000 heart surgeries for children over 30 countries. The Gift of Life includes Rotarians from all over the world, with independent chapters in countries as far away as Korea and India.

The sole purpose of the Gift of Life, India is to secure lifesaving heart surgery for children in desperate need regardless of race, religion, or country of origin. The Gift of Life, India is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt corporation with no administrative costs. All our team members work voluntarily; all the monies are generously donated by caring donors and through the numerous matching grants disbursed by the Rotary Foundation.

Like every good idea, it has grown exponentially. In 2001, Rotary Past District Governor of District 7250 Eileen Gentlecore had a simple conversation with a friend of hers and relayed the altruistic vision of Gift of Life. Her friend, Past District Governor Ravishankar Bhooplapur, with the assistance of Past RI Director Sushil Gupta – Trustee of Rotary Foundation, along with Dr. Rajan Deshpande and many other devoted Rotarians AC Peter, PDG Rajendra Rai, Rtn OP Khanna, DGE Kamlesh Raheja, PDG Sam Movva took up the challenge to provide invasive heart surgeries for the children of India. Dr. Rajan Deshpande & Mr Ashok Bolar took initial efforts in the region similarly Mr. Srinivasan, Mr. OP Khanna, PDG. Rai at Bangalore and Coimbatore.  AC Peter and Trustee Sushil Gupta in Delhi made significant contributions. Today, PDG Ravishankar Bhooplapur still serves as an Honorary Chairman of Gift of Life, India. The power of a simple conversation has led to a great achievement.

Dr Prabhakar Kore MP & Chairman of KLE hospitals recipient of Angel Awardee addressing the gathering

In 2002, Ravishankar Bhooplapur expressed this idea to Dr. Prabhakar Kore and wished to conduct the heart surgeries in KLE Hospital, Belgaum. Since then KLE Hospital has completed over 750 surgeries funded by Gift of Life program. Mr. Bhooplapur also went on to Coimbatore, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, New Delhi and established this program. Children were brought from Africa, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh & many other countries. Along with contributing his own generous funds he also manages to collect over $100,000 US dollars in donations ever year as well as matching grants from Rotary Foundation.

On 18th November we are celebrating 15 years of launching the Gift of Life initiative for saving over 6,000 children since then. As founder and chairman of this program Mr. Ravishankar Bhooplapur has taken time to come back to his roots to honor those people who have helped to set up and strived to make this program a success over the years. The event took place at Dharwad India on 18th November followed by Sri Praveen Ghodkhindi Flute concert.

Dr Rajan Deshpande who played key role since inception, addresses

The Angel Award is presented to Dr. Prabhakar Kore for his outstanding commitment to this program. And to Dr Rajan Deshpande, Ashok Bolar, Rajendra Rai, Sameer Hirani, Rtn Durgesh Haritay, Dr Vijay Sadasivam, Mr J. Wilson, and many more for their selfless dedication to the Gift of Life. The Gift of Life continues to grow and there is no limit to this idea if we remain committed to saving children’s lives.

Rotary Club or Jericho Sunrise, Rotary Club of Hicksville South & Rotary Club of Lake Success are involved past 10 years and every year over $250000 dollar is provided by way of matching grants to this project. Rotary Foundation matches equally for this grant.  The event received commitment of $150000 dollars from various rotary clubs and districts in India.

With the ongoing redevelopment of LaGuardia, the officials stressed the need for action to address the flow of traffic.

“[We] would like to request that traffic officers be positioned at these intersections during peak traffic hours, to ensure the smooth and orderly flow of cars and minimize congestion,” the lawmakers continued.

Powell is Trump’s Pick to succeed Yellen as Fed chair

WASHINGTON (TIP): President Donald Trump nominated Jerome Powell to succeed Janet Yellen as Fed Chair. Yellen’s term expires in February 2018. Trump made the announcement during a Thursday, November 2 afternoon ceremony in the Rose Garden.

Powell led a diverse field of potential nominees that included former Governor Kevin Warsh, Stanford economist John Taylor, chief Trump economic advisor Gary Cohn and Yellen herself.

Yellen’s term has been marked by a mostly uninterrupted bull market that began in March 2009 and low interest rates even as the Fed has sought to unwind the stimulus initiated during the crisis.

“Today is an important milestone on the path to restoring economic opportunity to the American people,” Trump said with Powell standing to his right and the prospective chairman’s family nearby. The president said the Fed requires “strong, sound and steady leadership” and Powell “will provide exactly that type of leadership.”

“He’s strong, he’s committed and he’s smart, and if he is confirmed by the Senate, Jay will put his considerable talents and experience to work leading our nation’s independent central bank,” Trump added.

Powell led a diverse field of potential nominees that included former Governor Kevin Warsh, Stanford economist John Taylor, chief Trump economic advisor Gary Cohn and Yellen herself.

Yellen is “a wonderful woman who’s done a terrific job,” Trump said. “We have been working together for 10 months and she is absolutely a spectacular person. Janet, thank you very much. We appreciate it.”

“I’m both honored and humbled by this opportunity to serve our great country,” Powell said. “If I am confirmed by the Senate, I will do everything within my power to achieve our congressional assigned goals of stable prices and maximum employment.”

NEW DELHI (TIP): Grappling with a “serious” hunger problem, India has been ranked 100th among 119 developing countries on the Global Hunger Index (GHI), behind North Korea, Bangladesh and even the besieged Iraq, but ahead of Pakistan, according to a report.

India was ranked 97th last year. The country’s hunger problem is driven by high child malnutrition, and underlines the need for stronger commitment to the social sector, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) said in its report.

“India… has the third highest score in all of Asia — only Afghanistan and Pakistan are ranked worse,” IFPRI said in a statement.

An increase in GHI indicates the worsening of a country’s hunger situation.

“At 31.4, India’s 2017 GHI score is at the high end of the ‘serious’ category, and one of the main factors pushing South Asia to the category of worst performing region this year, followed closely by Africa South of the Sahara,” it added. Among India’s neighbouring countries, China ranks the highest at 29; Nepal has been ranked 72, Myanmar 77, Sri Lanka 84, Bangladesh 88, Pakistan 106 and Afghanistan 107. North Korea ranks 93rd, and Iraq 78th. Now in its 12th year, the GHI ranks countries based on four indicators — undernourishment, child mortality, child wasting and child stunting.

IFPRI said more than a fifth of Indian children aged below five weighed too little for their height and over a third were too short for their age. “As of 2015-16, more than a fifth (21%) of children… suffer from wasting (low-weight-for- height) — up from 20% in 2005-2006,” IFPRI said. Only three other nations — Djibouti, SL and South Sudan — show child wasting above 20%this year.

Gujarat riots: HC rejects Zakia’s plea against Modi

AHMEDABAD (TIP): The Gujarat High Court on October 5 rejected a plea by Zakia Jafri challenging a lower court’s order that accepted a report of the Supreme Court-constituted SIT giving a clean chit to Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister, and 62 others refuting the “larger conspiracy” theory behind the 2002 communal riots in the state.

A single-judge Bench constituted by Justice Sonia Gokani said the HC did not see any error in the SIT’s report as its investigation was closely monitored by the SC.

Zakia, the wife of slain former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was among the 69 killed in the Gulberg Society massacre, had challenged the SIT’s closure report on her earlier petition requesting the apex court to arraign Modi and 62 bureaucrats and senior police officers of the state in 2002, alleging a “larger conspiracy” by the then state administration behind the riots.

The hearing on her Zakia’s petition, which was supported by the Mumbai based Citizens for Justice and Peace and its general secretary Teesta Setalvad, had concluded on July 3, but the final judgment was deferred till today.

The HC, however, rejected the lower court’s earlier conclusion that it had no jurisdiction in ordering further investigation in the case and permitted the petitioner either to approach the lower court, a Division Bench of the High Court or the Supreme Court for a fresh investigation into the allegations levelled by her accusing Modi and other officers of involvement in the riots.

Setalvad said Zakia would continue her legal fight and would go back either to the lower court or the apex court for a fresh investigation. “Zakia Jafri will now again begin her struggle for justice.

In the Babri case, it took 25 years. How long will this take us now?” she said.

Zakia along with Setalvad had moved a review petition in the HC, alleging a “larger criminal conspiracy” behind the riots after a magisterial court accepted the SIT’s report that there was no “prosecutable evidences” against Modi and others named in her petition before the apex court for arraigning them with the 2002 riot cases. It also sought HC’s direction for a fresh investigation into the matter.

The Gulberg Society massacre was among the nine most “gruesome incidents” during the 2002 communal riots which were investigated by the SIT.

A special court in Ahmedabad had convicted 24 of the massacre.

Musical Bonanza and Spectacular Fireworks Enthrall Visitors

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): The Association of Indians in America, NY Chapter (AIA-NY) hosted its 30th Annual Deepavali Festival at the South Street Seaport on Sunday October 1st from 12 noon till 7pm, culminating in a spectacular display of Fireworks sponsored by Cheapoair and Qatar Airways.

A view of the gathering at the performances

A beautiful day attracted large number of visitors to the Diwali fair which has earned the reputation of being one of the most anticipated events of the Indian American community’s annual list of attractions.

“The turnout was phenomenal”, said Gobind Munjal, President of AIA.

The organizers quoted the police to claim that an estimated 100,000 people visited the event and enjoyed the festivities. The event was attended by a wide array of people from different walks of life, age groups and backgrounds and coming from various parts of the Tri-States of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The organizers who put up the grand show

Arish Sahani, a former President of AIA NY Chapter praised the organizers for an imaginative allocation of booths. He said the segregation of food court resulted in a lot of convenience to visitors and led to decongestion of the main mela area. Similarly, segregating the Corporate and the retail business booths and setting up of 2 stages for performers made it very convenient for visitors to move around with ease and do the shopping.

Deepavali, meaning ‘A row of lamps’ is also popularly known as Diwali, or ‘Festival of Lights’.  It signifies the triumph of ‘Good over Evil’. The AIA-NY attempts to bridge the gap in the community with events as Deepavali and brings the community together. The festival was a full day celebration with numerous corporate booths, food & clothing vendors, performances and activities for the entire family including a live grand and spectacular display of fireworks.

Gobind Munjal said, “This was a special year, as it was the 30th anniversary of the Deepavali Festival and 50th anniversary of AIA. Although the Festival caters to all ages; children, youth, middle aged and the seniors, the emphasis has been shifted more towards youth, as their involvement is considered essential for the longevity of the association.  With that objective in mind, AIA-NY launched a youth wing earlier this year called “Desi Next” geared towards younger generation”.

    Enthralling performances and performers

“Towards that goal, a famous British Celebrity singer / songwriter “Jay Sean” of Bollywood fame sponsored by our long-term media partners “Hot Star” was brought in, who rocked the stage with his performance and attracted a lot of young crowd and thrilled them. Also, a famous Canadian born Singer / Songwriter “The PropheC” sponsored by Sony TV was an added attraction for them. This was, in addition to the “Naach Inferno” sponsored by Star Bharat, which has been an attraction for the past couple of years.

Bollywood Dance moves as the dancers of Shiamak USA involved everyone in a participatory dance at the end of the Festival. “AIA” goal to incorporate more young adults into the mainstream activities of the community was accomplished, said Munjal.

Munjal went ecstatic over the authentic Indian cuisine, a holistic Health Fair, unforgettable performances by local performing arts schools, in addition to a splendor showcase of Indian culture, arts, crafts, jewelry, traditional clothes.

Speaking about the cooperation AIA received from corporate and non-corporate sectors, Munjal said, “Corporate Sponsors such as Cheapoair, Qatar Airways, Toyota, PepsiCo, New York Life, Kotak Mahindra Bank and many more were present. Television partners that showcased the festival included Star Bharat, Sony TV, TV Asia, ITV, and Jus Punjabi. Jus Punjabi and 8K Radio did the live broadcast of the entire program. Print media, too, was extremely helpful in projecting the memorable event. The Indian Panorama, The Indian Express, India Abroad, Divya Bhaskar, The Indian Eye, Parikh Worldwide Media, The South Asian Times, The South Asian Insider and Bollywood Insider were particularly supportive.

The evening was indeed a memorable one for all.  The grand finale of the festival was the display of live Fireworks dazzling the NY skyline over the East River, enthralling thousands of New Yorkers.

The Indian Panorama asked another former President of AIA -NY Chapter, Sushma Kotahwala about the arrangements at the Diwali Mela. She said she was happy that all arrangements were meticulously planned and visitors turned up in large numbers.

The Association of Indians in America (AIA) is the oldest not-for-profit organization of Asian Indians in America founded on August 20, 1967. It is the grassroots national organization of Asian immigrants in the United States. With chapters and membership spread across the United States of America, AIA represents the hopes and aspirations of those immigrants who are united by their common bond of Indian Heritage and American Community.

NEW YORK CITY, NY (TIP): Virendra Pandit has published his second book” Return of the Infidel” which was launched in New York on September 18. The gathering included, besides others, Dr. VK Raju who recently launched his book “Musings on Medicine, Myth, and History: India’s Legacy”, Mentor on the Road Jagat Shah, Mrs. Shah, Harinder Singh Panaser, Sunil Hali, publisher of Indian Express, Prof. Indrajit S Saluja, editor-publisher of The Indian Panorama.

A view of the gathering. Mr. Virendra Pandit is seen second from right

    About “Return of the Infidel”

The book deals with the question of rise, decline, fall and revivification of nations and civilizations, which are organic entities like us and our institutions. The author has raked up some interesting questions and essayed to answer them.

*How and why Christianity and Islam are retreating across the world?

*How and why did Gandhi push Pakistan out of India?

*Why is Jinnah Father of the Indian subcontinent?

*And, how have Japan, India and China, in that order, revived like phoenix in the last two centuries?

Virendra Pandit presents a copy of the book to Harinder S Panaser

In author’s own words,” What does a business do to survive when it turns stagnant? It retires debt, sheds flab, invites technological up-gradation, undergoes financial reconstruction and tries to regain its market share. Or, what do we do when our vehicle breaks down midway? We call in the serviceman to repair the dysfunctional automobile and help us resume our journey.

“A similar pattern is observable in the rise, decline, fall and revivification of nations and civilizations, which too are organic entities like us and our institutions. They also follow a similar incremental organic evolutionary process through natural selection and mutation to survive, shed excess baggage of the past, and bounce back as the fittest. There is a difference though: while uncompetitive and ageing humans die, their societies mostly survive through regeneration by inducting disruptive catalysts for mutation.

“How and why do nations, and civilizations, rise and fall with such regularity and clock-wise precision? The answer: when societies and nations turn dysfunctional due to stagnation, they allure alien catalysts to revive themselves.

“Return of the Infidel is about how ancient cultures and civilizations like India, China and Japan did so: Christianity and Islam, the contemporary disruptive catalysts, came to revivify these menopausing societies. Since India, due to its proximity to these catalysts from West Asia (and Europe), had to struggle the hardest until 1947, the book explains this saga in greater detail; but the story of China and Japan, and that of many other breaking-out nations in Asia, Africa and South America, is similar and waiting to be told.

“On the other hand, most Christian nations, after the Crusades, shed surplus population, outgrew Christianity, and embraced Renaissance and modernity. Muslim countries, too, are following the same path: Islamic terrorism is their struggle to remain relevant, eliminate surplus male population within and usher in their own Renaissance.

“The ancient countries used Christianity and Islam only as catalysts to revive their contemporary civilizations, and slowly made these overstaying guests retreat during what we call decolonization. Since our heroes, like our gods, are crystallization of our societies’ collective consciousness and aspirations, these Asian nations incrementally conceived leaders like Gandhi, Mao and Tojo who led their countries to push out the erstwhile catalysts-turned-colonizers. Proselytizing and evangelizing faiths like Christianity and Islam viewed these non-Abrahamic people as ‘Infidels’—and they are Returning now! This return to global reckoning began with Japan in 1905, and is ongoing now with China; interestingly, Japan was the force-multiplier to the bigger and real players, India and China!

“This is the biggest power-shift in the organic world of Homo sapiens in the last 2,000 years!”

Dr. VK Raju presents his book “Musings on Medicine, Myth, and History: India’s Legacy” to Mentor on the Road Jagat Shah

INTERVIEW : Eye Foundation of America aims at eliminating childhood blindness: Dr. VK Raju

    By Prof. Indrajit S Saluja

Dr. V.K. Raju, MD, FRCS, FACS, the Founder and Medical Director of the Eye Foundation of American is on a crusade to eliminate avoidable blindness around the world.
Eye Foundation of America began its work in 1979 in Morgantown, West Virginia, USA. EFA grew out of his earlier work providing services and treatment near his birthplace in Rajahamundry, a town in Southeast India‘s Andhra Pradesh. Raju organized teams to go to remote areas and deliver eye care in areas where there otherwise were none. These traveling clinics were known as “eye camps.” (Eye camps remain a standard part of the Foundation’s services today.)
Raju dedicated virtually all the spare time he had outside his busy ophthalmological practice in West Virginia and used his own funds to cover many of the expenses. Eventually it became apparent that the lack of accessible, affordable eye care was very large and shared by an enormous number of people worldwide. In order to battle avoidable blindness on a global scale and to gain strength by partnering with other organizations, Raju created the 501 © 3 nonprofit organization that we know today as the Eye Foundation of America.
Today, Foundation has grown far beyond its original size and scope but never outgrew the vision of its founder, who continues to look ahead. EFA has built modern eye hospitals and trained ophthalmic assistants and other personnel to carry on our work. We provide workshops and fellowships for physicians and medical students throughout the world. We also conduct research to find better ways of preventing blindness, to learn how to distribute Vitamin A efficiently
His team has done wonders, considering the tremendous work done by them.
    • 2 million+ outpatients
    • 300 thousand+ eye surgeries
    • 25 thousand+ on children
This is completed by the Eye Foundation of America team since 1977 in India and 21 other developing countries. Additionally, the Eye Foundation of America lays great emphasis on teaching and training of health professionals who receive the Foundation’s support at every level.

When Dr. VK Raju invited me over for the annual Golf for Sight tournament which was held on July 21, I was a little confused. I wondered what connection sight could have with golf. However, I soon learnt it was a golf tournament Dr. Raju has been organizing to raise funds for the Eye Foundation of America which he founded in 1979 to work for prevention of blindness, particularly among children. As of now, the Foundation provides services in more than 14 countries and it has plans to extend that reach in the years ahead.

After the tournament was over, I asked Dr. Raju to sit me with me for an interview for The Indian Panorama. He was gracious enough to schedule a meeting the next morning over breakfast at his place.

Here are excerpts from the interview.
What is the concept behind the Eye Foundation of America and the various activities you are conducting?

The concept behind it is to review different aspects of a disease. For example, 80% of our learning is through vision. If you don’t promote good nutrition and exercise, we get into diabetes. And once we get into diabetes, things that can go wrong, it can affect from top of the head to toes. But most of the problems caused by diabetes can be prevented. We all have to start it early. West Virginia – where I came from India via London 40 years ago has tremendous similarities with India. It has wonderful people, hardworking people just like India. West Virginia has tremendous potential like India – it is not on the top of world but it can be. I feel I have two homes – travel from home to home. Ironically West Virginia and India have highest rates of diabetes. So this project is mainly to address problems of children, their nutrition problem is almost like developing countries. In the context of United States, some of the West Virginia counties have been neglected for a long time. So our objective is working with others. By doing so, we can do well. West Virginia University is unique – it has extension service where incredible people work. They have their presence in India too. Both Eye Foundation of America’s motto is ‘World without Childhood Blindness.’

During the last three years you launched a program/event called ‘For Sight.’ What kind of cooperation has been forthcoming from the community?

Very good but it has to be much better than what we are experiencing. This kind of effort needs a lot of people and time. Selling something is easy but doing an event is not.

How about your medical fraternity? How supportive they are?

Generally, the medical fraternity is too busy with their day to day routine. And they don’t think about things like this. The state medical association president Dr Rahul Gupta is a public health man and has been very supportive of program like this and we are trying to reach more and more. We are trying to make the event bigger.

You are talking about your two homes – West Virginia and India. Have you ever tried to establish a sister cities concept between West Virginia and any state of India?

We tried many times but others have to participate. I always quote this – If you want to go fast, you go alone. If you want to go very far, you go with the team. By working together, we can do more. Non-medically these things can be done, not by medical people.

Would you like to take up this issue to establish a sister cities concept between West Virginia and Andhra Pradesh with the help of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu?

Of course. But not only Andhra Pradesh. It can be any other state if we get proper support.

Do you think you have enough contact with the West Virginia State to convince them to establish a relationship of that kind with another state in India?

Absolutely. Our state Senator has been extremely supportive of our projects. He is a very good friend of mine and always ready to do things like this. The mayor of Morgan town, who retired couple of years back, visited India. But we need help from others like journalists, think tanks.

West Virginia University extension service centers are doing excellent job. Do you have any plan to open such centers in India with the help of the university?

Absolutely – West Virginia University extension service has their presence in India too. We will make it bigger. But you know, the proof of pudding is in eating. The Rotary International is working with WHO, UNICEF to eradicate polio for decades. That is the way it should be done.

Have you ever tried to collaborate with AAPI to prevent blindness in India?

AAPI is a wonderful organization and it can do good things. There are many projects under them. But being persistent with a project is very important. In recent AAPI meetings many leaders expressed interest. So, we have to look into that.

Tell us about the hospitals you have established in India

Both in Andhra Pradesh. The first one is in Kakinada which I opened with the help of my friend in Canada. The second one is Goutami Eye Institute, a fully-equipped eye hospital in Rajahmundry, with a wing dedicated to children’s eye care. The Goutami Eye Institute has become a global training center for education, and exchange programs.  The Goutami Eye Institute has trained teachers to screen 100,000 school children for symptoms.  Since its inception the Eye Foundation of America has performed more than 300,000 surgeries, 25,000 of these surgeries on children. For new born premature babies we give oxygen so that they can survive and don’t get blind.

Have you ever thought of seeking government help for your institutions?

We did many times but indirectly. A friend of mine fixed an appointment with Mrs. Gandhi but it did not happen. Later we tried with many government agencies but that also did not work out.

What is your opinion about the role of corporate world in health sector in India?

The corporate sector is doing a very good job. But except few, the standard is not at par with the western world.

If a state in India requests you to set up an eye hospital with the aim of avoidable blindness that the children of that state do not go blind, what would be your reaction?

The answer for that is – if it happens – it will be my dream comes true. The first thing we need is land. Rest of it will be taken care of.

Just before we parted he invited me over to another event the Foundation is organizing. This time in India. The Foundation will host an event on Oct 27 in India. People from all walks of life across the globe will come together. Mr Ravi from Sri Lanka – President of Rotary International will be the Chief Guest. Shrinu – foster child of IFA will be the guest of honor. Dr. Raju is such a fine person I could not decline his invitation. So, I have to be preparing to leave for India in the third week of October.

Texas starts oil shipments to India

DALLAS (TIP): On August 16, India‘s Ambassador to United States Navtej Sarna handed over the papers of the first shipment of crude oil worth USD 100 million that will be imported from the U.S. to India to the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, giving a major boost to the world’s third-largest oil importer.

The Indian Embassy in Washington tweeted images and video of the Sarna-Abbott meeting.  “Opening New Vistas in India, US co-opn Amb @NavtejSarna handing over pprs for 1st shipment of crude oil import to Texas,” the Embassy tweeted.

In a tweet a day earlier, Texas Senator Ted Cruz said his state would provide crucial oil exports to India and serve as a reliable long-term supplier of energy. In a certificate issued to Ambassador Sarna, the Texas Governor said in the decades to come “this relationship will continue to be one of the world’s most significant” as the US and India work toward common goals of prosperity, strength and peace.

“As a top exporter to India with over USD 2 billion annually in exports and as the nation’s leader in crude oil reserve and production, Texas looks forward to our growing relationship with India,” Abbott said.

The shipments have already begun – starting sail from August 8 till August 14. It is expected to reach Odisha’s Paradip Port by the end of September.

The development comes three days after U.S. President Donald Trump made a phone call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to greet him on India’s 71st Independence Day.

Over 6 million barrels of U.S. crude oil has been ordered in last one month by the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) and the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL).

U.S. President Donald Trump had mentioned that his country looked forward to exporting more energy products to India, when Prime Minister Modi visited the United States in June.

  • FBI agents searched Manafort’s home

    FBI agents searched Manafort’s home

WASHINGTON (TIP):  FBI agents looking for financial documents have searched one of the homes of President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, whose past foreign political work has been swept into the investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election. A Manafort spokesman confirmed the search Wednesday, August 9.

Manafort spokesman Jason Maloni said in a statement that FBI agents had obtained a warrant and searched one of Manafort’s homes, but he would not say when the search occurred or what it was for.

“Mr Manafort has consistently cooperated with law enforcement and other serious inquiries and did so on this occasion as well,” Maloni said.

The Associated Press has reported that the warrant for the search on July 26 at Manafort’s home in Alexandria, Virginia, sought information including tax documents and banking records. The Washington Post first reported the raid.

Manafort has been a subject of a longstanding FBI investigation into his dealings in Ukraine and work for the country’s former president, Viktor Yanukovych. That investigation has been incorporated into the probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is also scrutinizing Manafort’s role in the Trump campaign as he looks into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election and any possible collusion with Trump associates.

Manafort, who led the Trump campaign for several months, has denied any wrongdoing. He also spoke behind closed doors to Senate investigators for an interview just one day before the search of his home.

The use of a search warrant indicates that law enforcement officials have convinced a judge there is probable cause to believe a crime may have been committed. A house raid can be seen as an aggressive tactic given that Manafort has been cooperating with congressional investigators and has turned over hundreds of pages of documents. It could indicate law enforcement was looking for records beyond what Manafort provided.

Word of the raid is the latest revelation about Mueller’s investigation, which had been operating in relative secrecy compared with numerous congressional probes looking at the election. In recent days, it’s become clear the former FBI director is using a grand jury in Washington in addition to one in the Eastern District of Virginia, where investigators also have been looking into former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn.

In recent months, Flynn and Manafort have turned over documents to congressional committees investigating the election interference.

One focus of the multiple probes, including Mueller’s, is a June 2016 meeting Manafort attended with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr. That meeting, held at Trump Tower in New York, was described to Trump Jr in emails as part of a Russian government effort to help the Trump campaign by passing along information that could be used against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

During his Senate intelligence committee interview, Manafort provided his recollection of the Trump Tower meeting and turned over contemporaneous notes he took during the gathering. The interview was confined to that meeting.

Manafort has also turned over other documents to the Senate intelligence committee as well as about 400 pages of records to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Meanwhile, the Judiciary Committee said Wednesday it has also received about 250 pages of documents from Trump Jr and about 20,000 pages from the Trump campaign.

The content of the documents was not immediately clear. The committee said it received the Manafort and Trump campaign documents on Aug. 2 and the records from Trump Jr on August 4.

Judiciary committee leaders have also been in talks with Trump Jr and Manafort about private interviews. The committee initially called for them to testify publicly, but lawmakers have since said they were negotiating the terms of their appearances.

  • Hicksville Downtown Revitalization Wins $10 Million Award from NY State

Hicksville Downtown Revitalization Wins $10 Million Award from NY State

HICKSVILLE, NY (TIP): New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Anthony Macagnone and Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia announced, August 2, that the Town successfully won $10 million in Downtown Revitalization Initiative funds from Governor Cuomo and the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council for downtown revitalization in Hicksville.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Hicksville’s downtown is a prime location for revitalization, new jobs and new housing opportunities.  These economic development funds will assist the Hicksville community and all of our residents by creating new jobs, new housing opportunities and by transforming downtown Hicksville into an attractive, walkable and bicycle-friendly environment.  I thank Governor Cuomo for his commitment to our downtown and Councilmembers Rebecca Alesia and Anthony Macagnone for their dedication to advancing plans for downtown Hicksville.  This puts the Town of Oyster Bay on the map across New York State!”

The Local Planning Committee (LPC) – comprised of local and regional leaders, stakeholders, and community representatives – will establish and approve a community-based vision for revitalizing the downtown.  Potential projects may include decorative pavers, attractive lighting, newly planted trees, benches street art and a homogenous street and storefront signage program to create a strong sense of place intended to celebrate Hicksville’s history and cultural diversity.  Additionally, funds may be utilized for Complete Street initiatives that include new sidewalks and improvements to preexisting pedestrian pathways, footpaths, bicycle paths, bicycle racks and cross walks.  Furthermore, the Town envisions the creation of a plaza area—large community gathering space to be used for events such as fairs, farmers markets, art exhibitions, food truck nights, classic car nights, concerts, and much more.

Councilman Macagnone added, “In partnership with community stakeholders, our Town Board has taken a leadership role in shaping the future of downtown Hicksville.  I thank Governor Cuomo for investing in our vision to transform the downtown Hicksville community into a walkable city center that can successfully attract new jobs, new housing and keep our young people and senior citizens on Long Island.  I commend Supervisor Saladino and my colleagues on the Town Board for their dedication to this project and for working to enhance our community.”

Councilwoman Alesia stated, “Through extensive resident input and in close coordination with Vision Long Island, the Hicksville Community Council, Hicksville Chamber of Commerce and Hicksville Downtown Revitalization Committee, the Town has proposed a new zoning concept for the Downtown Central Business District to create new jobs and housing opportunities.  With these new State funds and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s $132 million investment in the Hicksville railroad station, we can transform the Hicksville community into a vibrant downtown for millennials, downsizers, empty nesters and senior citizens alike.”

Kevin Law, President of the Long Island Associated, added, “The Long Island Association commends Governor Cuomo, Supervisor Saladino and the Oyster Bay Town Board for their commitment to growing the local economy by investing in our downtowns like Hicksville.”

Hicksville Chamber of Commerce President Lionel Chitty concluded, “It is truly wonderful to see this positive movement with the Hicksville Downtown Revitalization efforts.  All the hard work done over the past seven years by the Downtown Hicksville Revitalization Committee, the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce, the local civic associations, the Town of Oyster Bay and all of the community stakeholders has finally paid off.  This award will be a catalyst for future growth in Hicksville. We look forward to seeing Hicksville become a true destination where people can live, work and play.”

Home to 42,000 residents, Hicksville is a transit-rich and diverse community located at the confluence of two Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) branch lines. The Hicksville LIRR train station is the busiest on Long Island, averaging 22,000+ commuter trips/weekday. The Hicksville Downtown has strong physical suitability for revitalization and redevelopment as evidenced by high LIRR ridership, intensity of existing commercial land uses, infill-ready parcels, converging arterial roadways and ample sewer and utility infrastructure. Hicksville is poised to capitalize on the strong Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) market and LIRR Third Track improvements through the implementation of a strategic zoning initiative, walkability enhancements, parking management and storefront beautification.

  • Election Commission of India mulling over Proxy Voting and Postal Balloting for NRIs

Election Commission of India mulling over Proxy Voting and Postal Balloting for NRIs

NEW YORK (TIP): In a first ever outreach to NRI’s, a two-member delegation from the Election Commission of India held, July 31, a news conference and a community meeting, organized with GOPIO’s initiative, at the Consulate General of India in New York. The delegation members briefed the gathering about the Election Commission’s proposals to facilitate voting by proxy and postal ballot to NRI’s. They also sought suggestions to ensure that the NRI poll process will be seamless. As of now the NRI voter has to be physically present in India to cast his/ her vote.

It may be mentioned here that it was for the first time in many years that a delegation from Election Commission visited the US to brief the media and interact with community. The visit helped community to understand what the government of India was doing and the delegation got a feedback as to the expectations of community abroad.

The delegation — comprising Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha and Deputy Election Commissioner Sandeep Saxena – held a meeting last week with in-charge Consul General Paramita Tripathi and other consulate officials. About 30 NRIs representing various organizations and members of the Indian news media were present at the meeting.

“We have launched a No (NRI) Voter Left Behind campaign,” they said last week. “Proxy voting is in a very advanced stage and electronic postal balloting is also under serious consideration.”

In the proxy voting method, an NRI voter will be given the opportunity of choosing a voter in India on whom the voter has immense trust. Basing on the voter’s opinion, the proxy person will cast the voter’s ballot physically at the polling station concerned.

The PTI news agency, citing a senior government functionary, reported on August 2 that the Cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had accepted the proxy voting proposal recommended by the Election Commission.

In the e-postal balloting, the prospective NRI voter will have to take a printout of the voter form and mail it to the Election Commission offices in respective states.

The two poll panel officials made it clear that the two proposals have not yet become law. Only after an act is made, NRIs will be able to participate in the election process in India beginning first with national and state polls. But both are confident that the relevant laws will be made by parliament in time for the next general elections scheduled for April-May 2019.

There are an estimated 16 million NRIs who hold Indian passports. Of them up to 70 percent are eligible voters, according to the duo.

Another noteworthy proposal of the Election Commission related to involving young Indian students studying abroad in the electoral process of India. Emphasizing the importance of involvement of the young Indians abroad, the two members of the delegation announced that senior students at colleges and universities will be asked to take initiative to register student voters. They will be designated Election Commission ambassadors.

Among the community organizations  present was the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin, represented by veteran NRI Thomas Abraham, who still holds the Indian passport. Several other NRI attendees also hold the country’s passport. However, some Indian-Americans holding the US passport also took part in the meeting.

The attendees with the Election Commission delegation and the Deputy Consul General

A few questions were also raised by media persons and community members. A question related to voting rights for those who for some reason have not been issued passport by Government of India. Another related to allowing the persons of Indian origin the right to vote which, it was argued will lead to their greater involvement in the affairs of the country of their origin. A suggestion was made that the Indian missions abroad could be the polling booths for NRI voters.

The reply of the delegation was it was not for them to do anything in respect of the suggestions made about the voting right to a category: it was for the lawmakers to decide.

  • International Indian Film Academy Show was a huge disappointment

International Indian Film Academy Show was a huge disappointment

    Impression of Patrons

    I.S. Saluja

NEW YORK (TIP): “The biggest night of the year. A star-studded spectacle with the biggest Bollywood superstars! With extravagant productions and superbly choreographed performances, this magnificent evening honors the best talent in Indian Cinema. The evening will witness performances by Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Kriti Sanon, Salman Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput and more”, read an announcement on IIFA website.

The Bollywood loving Indian Americans were thrilled. They had the intense desire to meet with their idols and also they had the means to buy the most expensive tickets and they lined up, expecting to meet with their favorite stars and have a swell time at the IIFA extravaganza. But then, it was not to be. At least, for many.

The Indian Panorama received a couple of letters describing IIFA as a hopeless and flop show, to be mild, and as a show meant to cheat patrons, at the worst. Media colleagues have also spoken about the event as the most ill organized and unwelcoming to spectators.

IIFA needs to know that its approval rating has surely gone down in this part of the world. A letter from a renowned and highly respected gentleman from medical profession says it all.

    Dear Media Friends,
I am sure you have a very good insight on majority of what happened at and behind the IIFA show and that your coverage will narrate all that. From my perspective, I had a fair amount of doctor and other friends who flew in and bought expensive tickets 1500-5000 dollars and here is their feedback.
    1. The promotional package forwarded to them had Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra as attending the show along with several Hollywood celebrities including Matt Damon, Julia Roberts etc. It is hard to resist the temptation of seeing SRK and Salmaan on the same stage. But, the show had none of that. This was a very cleverly done false and fraudulent marketing. Many of these people are exploring possibility of legal recourses in getting their money back, given the false claims and fraudulent marketing.
    1. The VIP tickets 2500 and above had a pre -event cocktail listed as part of ticket price. But to their unpleasant surprise, they had to stand in line and buy an overpriced beer and chicken fingers etc…. So much for the VIP treatment
    1. The green carpet concept was essentially a fraud in its own way, where there was lot of green but hardly any carpet. There was no VIP treatment in that green carpet.
    1. The show only had one focus i.e. a TV show for the colors TV as was clear by the two hosts talking at length with a poorly written non entertaining script. Singers and Star line up was good, but even then Wizcraft managed to produce a boring show for the most part.
    1. One of the moms wrote on my Facebook page that she felt sorry for those 200 kids and their dedicated parents who paid more than $300 to participate in dance with Salman Khan.
They spent 5 days and more than 15 hours a day in dance practice at MetLife stadium. All the kids sat in the brutal 100 degrees heat for the stars to come practice with them. Unfortunately, Salman never showed up for any of the practice until Thursday night at 8 pm.
On the day of the event the kids were asked to be there at 1pm because Salman wanted to practice with them. Once again Salman never showed up for practice. These poor kids were sitting at the stadium from 1pm and got to perform at 3 am. On Thursday, there was also an incident happened which injured seven or more kids. One of which got severely injured and ended up in the hospital.
Wizcraft had lot of issues in Tampa, but people took it as a first timer mistakes. However, this repeated and deliberate attempt of misleading people to get money and the mistreatment is not to be ignored and tolerated silently.
The public sentiment is clear by the fact that when I initially posted it on face book, the video post has had > 38,000 views and has been shared by around 80 people in 36 hours.
Knowing most of you, I am pretty sure and hope that your coverage will go beyond the spectacular stage decoration and glittery star pictures in portraying the feelings and frustration of people and kids.
Some folks are approaching the Indian Ambassador, FICCI and the office of attorney general for the fraud and mistreatment reporting.
If you have any other ideas, what should and can be done about this, please do let me know.
My cell # is 8568736633 for any questions.
    Regards.

  • At NBA summer league, Satnam Singh is still fighting for his chance

At NBA summer league, Satnam Singh is still fighting for his chance

DALLAS (TIP): With the first quarter of the DallasPhoenix matchup dwindling down to a close, Mavericks guard Josh Adams dribbled up the floor, received a screen from Ding Yanyuhang and drove left. The Suns’ Mike James and Dragan Bender, charged with protecting the pick-and-pop attack, trapped Adams, leaving Ding wide open from beyond the arc. Adams swung the ball over, and the 2017 Chinese Basketball Association MVP swished a straight-on 3 to the tune of hundreds of elated Asian-American fans busting out in applause.

All the while, Satnam Singh — a 7-foot-2 center and the first Indian-born player drafted into the NBA — stared on from the end of the Mavericks bench. Challenged with igniting hoops enthusiasm halfway across the world, he must climb a steep ladder to catch the attention of his home country.

While Ding merits his own acclaim, it is hard to imagine that an arena full of fans would have trekked to Las Vegas in the dead of July for NBA summer league had Yao Ming not come before him. But what happens when you’re not a bona fide All Star such as Yao?

The truth is, two years after being selected by the Mavs in the second round of the 2015 NBA draft, Singh — the face of Indian basketball — is still toiling away, fighting for minutes in the NBA’s development league with the Texas Legends.

However, Singh’s resolve remains steadfast. And even if he hasn’t increased his minutes or on-court opportunities, observation alone has proved an invaluable experience. He spent two anxiety-ridden years champing at the bit, watching the clock and wondering when his name would be called. He now has learned not to focus on what he can’t control.

“I was stressing my mind,” Singh said. “Always thinking, ‘I need time. I need time.’ Whereas now, nothing is happening. If I waste my time like that, I get too much pressure on my mind. I lost everything.”

It helped that the Mavs were a wrecking squad en route to the summer league championship in Orlando this year, providing the garbage-time minutes Singh so desperately craves to hone his abilities.

“If I get a couple minutes, I just rebound and finish the shot,” he said. “Focus on running, keep running up and down the court.”

In that game against Phoenix, which Dallas won 88-77 on Sunday, Singh played in the final two minutes, boxing out and putting the hurt on any Sun who dared venture near the rim.

Toiling away in the background and hustling up and down the court in the hopes of maybe one day becoming the fourth big man in an NBA rotation isn’t exactly the easiest sell. But to understand Singh’s potential, you also must understand how far Singh has come in such a short period of time — and against what odds.

Born in Ballo Ke, a tiny village in the state of Punjab, he was destined to a life of wheat farming, until his father took a life-defining chance at the suggestion of a friend and sent Singh to Ludhiana, a nearby city, to play basketball. It was there that the IMG Academy in Florida granted him a three-month scholarship that eventually stretched out to the day he declared for the draft. Starting at 14 years old, Singh not only was tasked with perfecting a new sport among lifelong prospects but also learning to speak English, a language with which he had no familiarity. In many ways, it is remarkable that he is even here at all.

67 year old Sikh postmaster stabbed; turban ripped off by robber in UK

LONDON (TIP): A 67-year-old Sikh postmaster in the UK was stabbed in the neck and head and his turban ripped off by a robber during a violent knife attack. Tarsem Singh Thethy was left with stab wounds as a result of the incident, and his wife Kulwant said he is “not the same person” since the attack at the Post Office in Erdington, Birmingham.

The incident took place in March but the shocking CCTV footage has been issued by the police now, showing the moment the man lunged at Thethy with a six-inch blade.

“Normally when somebody comes in, I greet them and say ‘good morning’ or something like that. But before I could speak, he had got in my face and stabbed me in the neck,” Thethy was quoted as saying by Metro.co.uk.

“It was only a small wound, about 2cm deep, but as you can imagine it was very painful. He was shouting ‘give me the money, give me the keys’. The man was crazy, he was pushing me around and wielding the knife,” he said.

In the video footage of the incident that happened on March 17, the pair can be seen grappling after the attacker ripped the turban off Thethy’s head.

His wife managed to trigger the panic alarm from a separate room, leading to the man rushing out of the shop.

“He kept telling me that he would kill me, but I always believed that I would be ok. Looking back, I’m not sure if he cared about the money. I think he just wanted to kill somebody. Ever since the incident, I have felt scared every day to work in the shop,” Thethy said.

Describing life after the attack, Kulwant told a TV show that her husband has been hit hard by the assault, “He’s been nervous, he’s not the same person.”

Police Constable Alan Reeves of West Midlands Police, said, “This man is a particular danger to the public and needs taking off the streets. We want to identify him and arrest him for the protection of the public, given the viciousness and how frenzied the attack was.”

After Israel, PM heads to Germany for G20

NEW DELHI (TIP): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will head to Hamburg, Germany, to attend the G20 Summit after wrapping up his highly-anticipated Israel visit next week.

The Prime Minister will be in Israel from July 4 to 6 and then he heads to Germany for a two-day visit starting July 7. The G20 Summit will see a ‘leaders retreat’ on the morning of July 7 where the agenda on discussion will be fighting terrorism. However, while India will put forth its concerns on terrorism, the background will be the larger canvass and that of Europe which has been badly hit by terror attacks of late.

Modi met Chancellor Merkel two months ago. The two leaders were able to agree on the need to continue with their commitments to the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement, despite the US retracting from it.

The G20 Summit will see the attendance of Merkel and US President Donald Trump. Germany has indicated that it will make climate change, free trade and the management of forced mass global migration the key themes of the G20 summit in Hamburg next week, putting the two leaders on a collision course.

  • Iraq declares end of caliphate after capture of Mosul mosque

Iraq declares end of caliphate after capture of Mosul mosque

BAGHDAD (TIP): After eight months of grinding urban warfare, Iraqi government troops on Thursday, June 29, captured the ruined mosque at the heart of Islamic State’s de facto capital Mosul, and the prime minister declared the group’s self-styled caliphate at an end, according to a Reuters report, June 29.

Iraqi authorities expect the long battle for Mosul to end in coming days as remaining Islamic State fighters are bottled up in just a handful of neighborhoods of the Old City.

The seizure of the nearly 850-year-old Grand al-Nuri Mosque — from where Islamic State proclaimed the caliphate nearly three years ago to the day — is a huge symbolic victory.

“The return of al-Nuri Mosque and al-Hadba minaret to the fold of the nation marks the end of the Daesh state of falsehood,” Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a statement, referring to the hardline Sunni Mulsim group by an Arabic acronym.

The fall of Mosul would in effect mark the end of the Iraqi half of the IS caliphate, although the group still controls territory west and south of the city, ruling over hundreds of thousands of people.

Its stronghold in Syria, Raqqa, is also close to falling.

A U.S.-backed Kurdish-led coalition besieging Raqqa on Thursday fully encircled it after closing the militants’ last way out from the south, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

These setbacks have reduced Islamic State’s territory by 60 percent from its peak two years ago and its revenue by 80 percent, to just $16 million a month, said IHS Markit.

“Their fictitious state has fallen,” an Iraqi military spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Rasool, told state TV.

However, it still occupies an area as big as Belgium, across Iraq and Syria, according to IHS Markit, an analytics firm.

Islamic State fighters blew up the medieval mosque and its famed leaning minaret a week ago as U.S.-backed Iraqi forces started a push in its direction. Their black flag had been flying from al-Hadba (The Hunchback) minaret since June 2014.

Much of the mosque and brickwork minaret was reduced to rubble, said a Reuters TV reporter who went to the site with the elite units that captured it.

  • Fillip to Trade and Investment to be focus of Modi’s visit to US: MEA

Fillip to Trade and Investment to be focus of Modi’s visit to US: MEA

NEW YORK (TIP):  Deepening bilateral trade and economic ties will be one of the key focus areas of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the US where he will hold talks with President Donald Trump on June 26 in their first meeting.

A number of key issues, including ways to step up cooperation for effectively combating terrorism and further strengthening defense ties, are also likely to figure during the talks between the two leaders.

Modi will visit the US on June 25 and 26 as part of a three-nation tour beginning on Saturday.

“One of the agendas of the visit is how to further push and develop economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries for mutual benefit,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

Refusing to give further details, he said that all matters of bilateral interests will be on the table, adding, “The leaders will have an entire gamut of relationship in front of them when they talk.”

Asked whether incidents of alleged racial attacks will be raised by the Prime Minister with the US president, Baglay said that not all attacks were racial. “Whenever there have been attacks on Indians, it is because of some reason or the other, we have seen that they have been condemned very strongly by the US government,” he said.

He added that the Indo-US relationship has been very robust and strong and thrust would be to take it further.

Asked whether Modi will raise the issue of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan, Baglay said that India’s concerns regarding it are very well known and that it was logical to assume that matters relating to regional and global security will be discussed.

“Terrorism that emanates from there (Pakistan) affects not only India, but other countries in South Asia and the world over,” he said.

On whether India will apprise the US about its concerns over the US military aid to Pakistan being diverted for anti- India activities, Baglay did not give a direct reply, but said such concerns have been conveyed whenever there has been an occasion.

To a query on how preparations for the Modi-Trump meeting were going on considering the US leader’s “maverick nature”, Baglay said, “I don’t agree with your description of the president.”

The MEA spokesperson said Modi will meet CEOs of top US companies and senior representatives from the business community on June 25. On Modi’s meeting with the CEOs, he said discussions are expected on giving further fillip to trade and investment.

There will be an Indian community event in the afternoon of that day as well.

Modi would visit Portugal on June 24 and the Netherlands on June 27.

South Asian Spelling Bee Announces Chicago & Seattle winners

NEW YORK (TIP): Continuing its quest for the best speller in the community, the 2017 South Asian Spelling Bee (www.SouthAsianSpellingBee.com) traveled to Illinois and Washington with stops in Chicago and Seattle.

With a huge turnout this year as well, the Bee attracted some top talent as well as young and new spellers that competed for the coveted prizes and titles.

In the Chicago Regional, Nilla Rajan (12) of Chillicothe, Ohio was the regional champ, Snehal Choudhury (12) of Massillon, Ohio, was the first runner up, and Jashun Paluru (12) of West Lafayette, Indiana, was second runner up.

The event is open to children of South Asian descent up to 14 years of age. It will give South Asian children a chance to test their spelling skills in their core peer group. Interested spellers need their parent or guardian to register them online at www.southasianspellingbee.com.

Organized by Touchdown Media Inc., the South Asian Spelling Bee is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, with regionals being held in 8 locations across the United States. Apart from Chicago and Seattle, regional centers include Washington, D.C. Metro, Charlotte, Boston, New Jersey, the Bay Area, and Dallas. All events will be free to attend and open to the public. An international regional in Accra, Ghana was conducted earlier this year, from where spellers of South Asian descent will qualify for the finals.

“For the past nine years, the Bee has consistently provided a firm platform for the community to come together and hone their craft. It’s become a family activity that contributes towards the overall development of the child. We are proud to enter our Tenth consecutive year and look forward to engaging some of these wonderful spellers,” said Rahul Walia, founder of the South Asian Spelling Bee and CEO of Touchdown Media Inc.

The top two spellers of each regional competition will advance to the finals to be held in New Jersey in August. Champion’s grand prize of $3,000 will be awarded to the winner at the finals.

  • Indian American Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion suffers racially insensitive remarks

Indian American Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion suffers racially insensitive remarks

Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and Hindu Congressman Tulsi Gabbard lash out at the anchors for playing into stereotypes

WASHINGTON (TIP): Alisyn Camerota, host of CNN’s New Day, made a racially insensitive remark to a 12-year-old guest who had just won a national spelling bee while interviewing her on-air on Friday.

Camerota was interviewing Ananya Vinay, a young girl of Indian origin, about her recent win Thursday at the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition, one of the most recognized spelling competitions in the U.S. Camerota and her co-host Chris Cuomo jokingly asked her to spell the word “covfefe.”

“Covfefe” is the unintentional typo made by President Donald Trump during an unfinished tweet that was accidentally published on Twitter. The word had become an internet meme since then, spawning a seemingly endless amount of jokes, including one from Trump himself.

Vinay attempted to spell the word, but left out the “v.” Camerota corrected her, calling it a “nonsense word,” then remarked to Vinay about not being sure if the root of the word comes from Sanskrit, “which is probably what you’re used to using.”

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and HinduCongressman Tulsi Gabbard lashed out at the anchors for playing into stereotypes.

“It’s disappointing that a segment which should have honored the accomplishments of Vinay instead other-ised her and the Indian-American community by playing into stereotypes,” Indian American Congressman from Illinois Krishnamoorthi said.

“The hosts’ treatment of Sanskrit is also insensitive to the language’s rich, ongoing sacred tradition and continues a troubling trend in the network’s treatment of Hinduism which was also evident on the network’s program, Believer,” Krishnamoorthi said.

This is “Further evidence of the need for America in general, and CNN in particular, to get educated about Hinduism and India,” said Tulsi Gabbard, the Hindu Congresswoman from Hawaii.

Added to CNN slur was a comment by Roxanne Vaughan, a professor of biomedical sciences at the University of North Dakota, reportedly “under fire” over a misinterpreted Facebook comment about Ananya Vinay. Professor has since clarified his comment about Indian American Spelling Bee Winner and apologized.

The Grand Forks Herald and WDAZ-ABC reported this week that Vaughan wrote of Vinay, who is of Indian descent, “I’m sure she’s an immigrant, not worthy of interacting with our pure Americans. Send her back.”

A campus spokesperson reportedly said Vaughan’s comment was “certainly not in keeping with university statement core values,” adding, “We know we have work to do in that area and this underscores the fact that we have a lot of work to do.” Vaughan said via email Tuesday that her remark — as many might suspect — was posted sarcastically, in response to current political rhetoric surrounding immigration. She attempted to clarify her point after someone misunderstood and removed the post within five minutes to avoid further confusion, she added.

“I was led to make a remark on my Facebook page that I phrased as sarcasm to convey my belief that our society is strengthened by the presence of diverse cultures and that exclusion of any group robs us of these benefits,” Vaughan said.

“I sincerely regret that I wrote this comment in a way that could be misinterpreted, and that it may have caused any pain or fear to [students], who above all else should trust their faculty.” (Source: Inside Higher Ed)
