Kwanzaa encompasses seven days dedicated to seven principles, also known as the Nguzo Saba. The Kwanzaa principles are Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith). Each activity or event at NJPAC’s Kwanzaa Family Festival embodies one of the seven principles.

    MODERATOR

John Schreiber, President and CEO – NJPAC

John quips about himself, “I fell in love with the theater and I thought, I don’t know how, but I want to be part of that.”

“I grew up in Queens, and I lived at the last stop on the subway. Starting at the age of nine, my parents let me take the subway into the city, and they gave me $5, and I could buy a seat in the balcony at a Broadway show. I have memories of seeing Carol Channing in ‘Hello Dolly,’ Angela Lansbury in ‘Mame,’ Linda Lavin in ‘It’s a Bird,’ ‘It’s a Plane,’ ‘It’s Superman.’ And I fell in love with the theater and with what it felt like to be transported into another world. I thought that was the greatest.”

“And I thought, ‘I don’t know how, but I want to do that.’ I want to be part of that.’ When I went to college, I ran a concert series, and I started a summer theater. And I just knew that I needed to be in this universe somehow. I went to work for George Wein, who was the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival. I’ve been doing this sort of thing in music and theater and television and festivals ever since. And it’s been a glorious ride.”

“I’m especially proud that Savion Glover has become such an engaged and active part of our family here. Savion has this amazing ability to connect and inspire young people, give them a sense of confidence in themselves, a feeling of ownership of the development of the work they’re doing. A few summers ago, he directed and choreographed a new production of ‘The Tap Dance Kid,’ which he starred in when he was 11 on Broadway. It’s one thing to be a genius, another thing to be kind. To combine those two things in service of young people’s growth is very moving to me.”

Now, the Kronos Quartet returns to NJPAC to explore the inspiring voice of Mahalia Jackson, refracted through works by Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Terry Riley, Laurie Anderson, and more.

Mahalia Jackson was the voice of the civil rights movement. She sang her truth across the south: at Selma, the March on Washington and the funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr. She won the first-ever GRAMMY® for gospel music, and was honored with a posthumous lifetime achievement award in 1972.

Das’ fourth Netflix comedy special, ‘Landing,’ recently earned an International Emmy® nomination for its witty cross-cultural insights and personal stories. Comedian and actor Vir Das has not just hit the comedy mega-leagues, he’s conquered them, thanks to his boundless comedic talent, wildly successful world tours, and four incredible Netflix specials. His global success is a testament to the power of comedy to connect people from all corners of the world.

Vir Das has hit the global comedy mega-leagues thanks to his boundless comedic talent, wildly successful world tours, and four incredible Netflix specials. Decider praised his “refreshingly different take on our current obsession with “punching up” and “cancel culture,” and Paste Magazine gushed, “Even if he’s sending barbs someone’s way, his criticisms are packaged up so beautifully that you’re simply in awe until they hit their mark.”

Das taped the special in New York City after a hit run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where the New York Times declared, “No artist embodies the globalization of stand-up like Vir Das.” Vir’s third Netflix unique, ‘Vir Das: For India,’ garnered an International Emmy nomination for Best Comedy in 2021.

As one of India’s most prominent stand-up comedians and a Bollywood star, Vir was the second-best-selling live actor in the country in 2022. He has increasingly gained worldwide appeal through his international tours and beloved appearances in multiple fan-favorite comedy films and TV series. He starred in Judd Apatow’s feature ‘The Bubble’ on Netflix and the ABC spy dramedy ‘Whiskey Cavalier’ in the role of Jai Datta opposite Scott Foley and Lauren Cohen. Vir has created, produced, and starred in multiple series, including the scripted thriller Hasmokh for Netflix and the unscripted travel show ‘Jestination Unknown’ for Amazon’s Prime Video. • N2S RETURNS IN JUNE TO SPOTLIGHT NJ’S CULTURE, CREATIVITY AND DIVERSITY

N2S RETURNS IN JUNE TO SPOTLIGHT NJ’S CULTURE, CREATIVITY AND DIVERSITY

    • By Mabel Pais

The North to Shore (N2S) Festival, after its astounding success with hundreds of thousands of attendees and participants at its inaugural N2S in June 2023, returns in June 2024 with a repetition of the three-city, three weekend celebration of the arts and ideas across New Jersey.

Conceived by Governor Phil Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy, the North to Shore Festival was designed to spotlight New Jersey’s culture, creativity, and diversity. The lineup begins this year in Asbury Park June 10-16, swings down the Shore to Atlantic City June 17-23, and concludes in Newark June 24-30 at several locations in each city.

The North to Shore Festival will feature scores of diverse and talented artists you won’t want to miss, including Kevin Hart, Matchbox Twenty, Gary Clark, Jr., The B-52s, Gabriel Iglesias, Bleachers, Jeezy, Scarface, Barenaked Ladies, Lake Street Dive, Prince Royce & Wisin, Keyshia Cole and Trey Songz, Frankie Valli, Stephen Colbert, as well as film screenings, live podcasts, and engaging panels.

“Our inaugural North to Shore Festival was the beginning of a proud, new annual tradition that brings some of the biggest stars to New Jersey to bolster our tourism industry and boost demand for our local businesses,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “I’m thrilled to announce this year’s lineup features a number of world-renowned acts that will hit the stages in Newark, Asbury Park, and Atlantic City this June. This year’s festival will be even bigger and better than ever before, and we look forward to welcoming those from near and far to experience our unique state this summer.” The announcement was made during a press conference in March 2024 at the iconic Stone Pony in Asbury Park, the heart of the Jersey Shore music scene where festival organizers, state leaders, and the arts community came together to celebrate the next edition of North to Shore.

“The North to Shore Festival is an opportunity to showcase all that New Jersey has to offer, including some of the best local and global acts, our incredible diversity and unique culture,” said First Lady Tammy Murphy. “As we announce this year’s lineup for the three-city, month-long celebration, I eagerly anticipate another chance to enjoy New Jersey’s music, art and food scene alongside people from all over the state and nation.”

In its inaugural year, North to Shore was designed to be an economic engine for the state. Organizers’ goals were far exceeded as the newborn festival drew an audience of nearly 250,000 to experience more than 300 artists in more than 100 venues in three of New Jersey’s most arts-rich cities. While most festival events were free to the public, ticketed events brought in $7.6 million in ticket sales.

“Last year’s inaugural North to Shore Festival proved to be a tremendous success for New Jersey’s communities, cities, and economy. As part of Governor Murphy’s vision to make New Jersey the best place to live, work, and raise a family, this three-week festival celebrates and showcases the strength of our state’s talent and diversity in innovation and arts,” said NJEDA (New Jersey Economic Development Authority) Chief Executive Officer Tim Sullivan. “The NJEDA is proud to take part in this year’s North to Shore Festival, which will not only bring world-class talent back to New Jersey but will help boost the economy at the heart of the summer season by supporting local restaurants, hotels, venues, and main streets.”

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) is producing this three-week extravaganza in collaboration with partners Casinoeed Reinvestment Development Authority, NJM Insurance Group, NJ Travel & Tourism, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Outfront Media, RWJBarnabas Health, and United Airlines, with leadership support from this year’s title sponsor, Prudential Financial.

“We are proud to serve as title sponsor for North to Shore and help showcase the creativity and diversity that defines New Jersey and our home city of Newark,” said Shané Harris, Vice President and Head of Social Responsibility, Prudential Financial, President, The Prudential Foundation. “A vibrant cultural scene is key to having thriving communities, and we are excited to continue our long-standing relationship with NJPAC to bring North to Shore’s creative economic engine to Newark and across the state.”

Producing partners this year include Montclair Film and Newark International Film Festival, which together will add a curated film component to the festival; TechUnited:NJ, which will join North to Shore by hosting more than 5,000 attendees at the Propelify Innovation Festival, showcasing tech leaders, emerging startups, and cutting edge technology; Stockton University, which will manage a series of E-Games competitions and soccer programming in Atlantic City; and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ), which in collaboration with NJPAC and the NJEDA will host virtual discussions on maternal health, the arts as a catalyst to health, and food insecurity.

A portion of ticket sales to select events will support Growing Healthy Pantries — a partnership among Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Community FoodBank of New Jersey, FoodBank of South Jersey, Fulfill, Mercer Street Friends, Norwescap, and Feeding America — which addresses food security statewide. Growing Healthy Pantries helps 900 food pantries in all 21 counties promote healthy food choices to improve the overall health of New Jerseyans.

“Thousands of families rely on New Jersey’s 900 community pantries and the major food banks that provide the healthy foods they distribute,” said Jonathan Pearson, Horizon’s Director of Corporate Social Responsibility and Executive Director of The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey. “Good health begins with good nutrition. Support for Growing Healthy Pantries adds an important social mission to the North to Shore Festival that expands the impact of this event to every corner of the State.”

NJPAC once again provided direct grants to artists, nonprofits, small businesses, and art organizations based in each host city to self-produce performing and visual art events during the festival. The grants, which total $367,000 this year, support the creative economy of each city, and give a platform to artists and arts organizations that call New Jersey home. A full list of grant recipients is available at northtoshore.com.

Additionally, for the first time, grants have been provided to artists interested in performing on the North to Shore Festival Community Showcase Stages, centrally located performance venues in each city, including the Audible Showcase Stage in Newark.

“We are thrilled to bring North to Shore back to the Garden State this summer to celebrate the vast diversity and top-notch talent that is quintessential New Jersey,” said NJPAC CEO John Schreiber. “In its inaugural year, North to Shore proved to be an economic driver for the businesses and downtown districts that serve our state’s residents day-in and day-out. I’m proud to bring that support back to three of our most iconic cities this summer.”

This year, festival goers can maximize the festival experience with the North to Shore app, where they can plan their schedule, explore artists, buy tickets, get access to exclusive content and giveaways, and more.

“Asbury Park is ready to shine for a second year as one of the host cities of the North to Shore Festival,” said Asbury Park Mayor John Moor. “We are eager to share the talent and energy that makes our small city so captivating with the rest of the state and beyond.

“It is an especially proud moment for us as the iconic Stone Pony is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2024,” Moor continued. “North to Shore is tapping the expected and unexpected venues in town and will be presenting a wide variety of acts and activations. We are honored to kick off this year’s festival and look forward to seeing everyone in Asbury Park in June.”

“The Great City of Atlantic City got to showcase why we’re among the entertainment capitals of the country during last year’s North to Shore Festival, and we’re looking forward to getting another opportunity this time around,” said City of Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, Sr. “Everything that makes our city special and unique, particularly in the arts and culture scene, will once again be on full display as we promise this festival will be even bigger and better in year number two.

“Newark has long been a hotspot for talented artists, entrepreneurs and innovators to grow, perform and master their craft,” said Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka.  “With dozens of entertainment venues- including New Jersey Performing Arts Center – as well as authentic restaurants, boutique shops and recreation facilities available, Newark is a perfect location to host North to Shore.

Experience a grand celebration of the Garden State’s premier youth orchestra program as its three full symphony orchestras and Jazz Orchestra come together with alumni for a triumphant concert commemorating the 45th season.

Just gaze at and listen to what that seed has blossomed into…Happy 45th Anniversary indeed!”

“As we commemorate the New Jersey Youth Symphony’s remarkable 45-year journey, this concert stands as a tribute to the unwavering dedication, exceptional talent, and boundless passion of our young musicians, their families, our devoted artistic and administrative teams, and our invaluable community partners—including public school music educators, private teachers, and generous supporters,” said Helen H. • REEL STORIES. REAL CHANGE: ‘ONE EARTH’ FILM FEST THEME INSPIRES CLIMATE ACTION THROUGH STORYTELLING

One Earth Film Fest (Credit: oneearthfilmfest.org)
One Earth Film Fest (Credit: oneearthfilmfest.org)

    By Mabel Pais

The ONE EARTH FILM FESTIVAL returns April 17 to 23, 2024, in partnership with the City of Chicago’s Department of Environment for its 13th festival season. Five days of in-person screenings at over 14 locations across the greater Chicago area will be followed by two days of virtual screenings. The 2024 festival opens with its annual opening night launch party at the LEED Certified B-Corp Radio Flyer headquarters on April 17, offering both in-person and virtual participation.

In observance of Earth Day 2024, One Earth will co-host an annual park clean-up at Columbus Park in Chicago’s Austin community on April 20 at 9:00 a.m. with BUILD Chicago, Chicago Park District, the Field Museum, NCH2, Columbus Park Naturalists/Stewards, and Interfaith Green Network.

The annual Earth Day action fair and indoor market at the Chicago Cultural Center will precede the acclaimed film, “Common Ground,” and offer opportunities for community activism on April 21.

The Festival chose the theme “Reel Stories. Real Change.” to encapsulate the power of storytelling to effect meaningful shifts in attitudes and behaviors towards climate change and the fight for environmental justice. By sharing authentic human experiences and truths about climate change, these stories hold the power to catalyze real change across all spheres.

This year’s films highlight revolutionary climate action on topics ranging from water and energy conservation; to the fights against environmental racism in the U.S., Central America, and Africa; and sustainable food and regenerative agriculture. Post-screening panel discussions with distinguished experts feature diverse voices, including leading climate scientists, passionate grassroots community activists, inspiring film subjects, and visionary filmmakers. These conversations shed light on pressing environmental issues and empower audiences with action steps to confront climate change and champion environmental justice in their communities.

“Since its inception, and in this crucial election year, One Earth has stressed the importance of taking collective action,” said Ana Garcia Doyle, Executive Director of One Earth Collective. “Film is a powerful way to spur us toward social change and collective action. Much environmental communication heavily depends on data, but that’s not going to change hearts. The stories told through film invoke our empathy and spur our will to act. We must pull together to make a real impact. The urgency is now.”

  • EXPLORE THE BLISS OF “TISRA” AT NJPAC

    By Mabel Pais

Experience the richness, depth and joy of Indian classical music with Zakir Hussain, Sabir Khan and Debopriya Chatterjee performing at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on April 13, 2024 at 3 PM and 7:30 PM, Victoria Theater.

    ZAKIR HUSSAIN

Zakir became the first musician from India to receive 3 Grammys at one time at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024, for Best Global Music Album, Best Global Music Performance and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

‘The London Telegraph’ calls him “the presiding genius and global ambassador for North Indian classical music.” GRAMMY® winning tabla drummer Zakir Hussain first entered the western world’s consciousness in the ‘70s with his collaborations with George Harrison, John Handy, Van Morrison and Earth, Wind & Fire. He’s lauded for his group ‘Shakti,’ which he founded with John McLaughlin and L. Shankar, and for ‘Planet Drum’ with Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead.

The pre-eminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time, Zakir Hussain is appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon and one of the world’s most esteemed and influential musicians. The foremost disciple of his father, the legendary Ustad Allarakha, Zakir was a child prodigy who began his professional career at the age of twelve, accompanying India’s greatest classical musicians and dancers and touring internationally with great success by the age of eighteen. His brilliant accompaniment, solo performance and genre-defying collaborations, including his pioneering work to develop a dialogue between North and South Indian musicians, have elevated the status of his instrument both in India and globally, bringing the tabla into a new dimension of renown and appreciation.

Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, Zakir’s contribution has been unique, with many historic and groundbreaking collaborations, including Shakti, Remember Shakti, Masters of Percussion, Planet Drum and Global Drum Project with Mickey Hart, Tabla Beat Science, Sangam with Charles Lloyd and Eric Harland, CrossCurrents with Dave Holland and Chris Potter, in trio with Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer, and, most recently, with Herbie Hancock.

As an educator, he conducts many workshops and lectures each year, has been in residence at Princeton University and Stanford University, and, in 2015, was appointed Regents Lecturer at UCBerkeley. His yearly workshop in the San Francisco Bay Area, conducted for the past 30 years, has become a widely anticipated event for performers and serious students of tabla. He is the founder and president of ‘Moment Records,’ an independent record label presenting rare live concert recordings of Indian classical music and world music. Zakir was resident artistic director at SFJazz from 2013 until 2016, and was honored with SF Jazz’s Lifetime Achievement Award on January 18, 2017, in recognition of his “unparalleled contribution to the world of music”. Learn more at zakirhussain.com.

    SABIR KHAN

Khan is known today for his mastery of sarangi. His technique of playing is a rare combination of sur and laya (note and rhythm).

He has played in feature films including ‘Chameli,’ ‘Rog,’ ‘Dor,’ ‘Anwar’ ‘Sanwariya,’ ‘Chodon na yaar,’ ‘Jodha Akbar’ and Faisal Saif’s ‘Amma,’ – a multilingual film. Faisal Saif’s ‘Amma,’ a multilingual film. He was part of A.R. Rehman and Shreya Ghosal’s episode for ‘MTV Unplugged.’

Khan was born in Jodhpur. He had been exposed to music when he was six years old through his grandfather Ustad Gulab Khan. Sabir Khan follows in his family’s footsteps as a tenth generation sarangi player. In addition to performing the traditional South Asian stringed instrument, he’s a composer and songwriter whose music appears in TV and film. He tours the world and recently started a record label.

Khan performs with his father, sarangi player & vocalist Padma Bhushan Ustad Sultan Khan in concert, and also solo. He has performed alongside artists such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pt. Kumar Bose, and Pt. Anindo Chatterjee. He has also played with ghazal maestro Ustad Gulam Ali, Talat Aziz, Asha Bhosle and The Hazards at a terrace gig near Citi Centre. He recently played on the album of Lata Mangeshkar.

    DEBOPRIYA CHATTERJEE

Award-winning bansuri player Debopriya Chatterjee is one of the few women flutists in the Hindustani classical tradition. She is one of a pair of the famous “Flute Sisters” along with her sister, Suchismita. She is also the lead flutist in the all-female classical music band, ‘Sakhi.’

Debopriya has chosen ‘flute’ as her way of life. After acquiring thorough training in classical music, both Indian and Western, she is poised to present her art to connoisseurs. She accompanies her guru, Padmavibhushan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia on stage in India and on the global stage. For her unflinching dedication and excellence in her art, she has been bestowed with coveted awards like Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from Sangeet Natak Akademi, the title of Surmani and the Sahara Excellence Award to name a few. • POETRY, A CATALYST FOR SOCIAL CHANGE?

    • By Mabel Pais

The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation (Dodge Foundation), the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka on January 24, 2024 announced plans for the 2024 Dodge Poetry initiative – a new collaboration that celebrates poetry as a catalyst for communities to advance social change.

Guest speakers featured John Schreiber, CEO of NJPAC; Tanuja Dehne, President and CEO of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka; Ysabel Gonzalez, Poetry Creative Officer at the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

The event featured special poetry performances by Poet and Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, who recited his poem, ‘Digging Max,’ paying homage to his late father Amiri Baraka, a legendary poet and playwright who worked with Max Roach. Then, a surprise poetry performance by the legendary ‘The Last Poets,’ ABIODUN OYEWOLE, BABA DON and FELIPE LUCIANO, who continue the legacy of ‘The Last Poets’ who originally formed in 1968 in Harlem, New York.

The event also included an exceptional performance by Poet and Pulitzer Prize Winner TYEHIMBA JESS, a champion for Black voices in the literary arts. He is the Board President of Cave Canem, an organization committed to cultivating Black poets’ artistic and professional growth. Tyehimba Jess performed his poem, ‘A Black Man’s Prayer,’ a profound poem about peace.

For the first time, Dodge Poetry will expand beyond its biennial poetry festival (which has been headquartered at NJPAC since 2010) to include poetry programs in Newark throughout the year including NJPAC’s Horizon Sounds of The City.

(left to right): The Dodge Foundation, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka announced major expansion of Dodge Poetry program that will take place throughout 2024 in Newark, New Jersey, L to R John Schreiber, CEO of NJPAC; Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka; Dave Rodriguez, NJPAC’s Executive Producer; Last Poets, Umar Bin Hassan, Abiodun Oyewole, and Baba Don, Ysabel Gonzalez, Poetry Creative Officer at the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; Tanuja Dehne, President and CEO of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; and Poet and Pulitzer Prize Winner Tyehimba Jess. (Photo : Courtesy NJPAC)

These Dodge Poetry events will have three goals to: 1) mobilize communities and fuel movements for social change; 2) amplify poet activists who challenge and reframe existing narratives and norms; and 3) create spaces for empathy, healing, and repair for individuals who have experienced systemic racism.

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka shared, “Because poetry impacts hearts so directly, it has great power to transform communities, and give rise to social change, hope, and healing. This year-round poetry program about to ripple through Newark will realize one of my greatest wishes for the city, and I thank the Dodge Foundation and NJPAC for making this happen.”

Building on 40 years of poetry programming, the new collaboration between NJPAC and Dodge Foundation will extend the footprint of Dodge Poetry across the entire city of Newark. The events are designed to engage and activate residents, especially young people and community partners, and to highlight the intersection of poetry and social justice.

The first initiative of this project happened on Friday, January 26th with ‘Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite’ performance in NJPAC’s Prudential Hall at 8PM , a celebration of the centennial of Max Roach — drummer, bebop pioneer, and civil rights activist — who explored social justice issues and racial inequality through the lens of jazz and poetry.

Performers included Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, who presented his poems by his father, Amiri Baraka (a long-time Max Roach collaborator) as well as his own writing; drummer Nasheet Waits (of Max’s percussion ensemble M’Boom); vocalist Cassandra Wilson; poets ‘The Last Poets,’ Sonia Sanchez and Saul Williams; saxophonist Ravi Coltrane; pianist Nduduzo Makhathini; and bassist Eric Revis. Advisory Committee member and past Festival Poet, Vincent Toro, opened the event.

Dodge Poetry will culminate with the 20th celebration of the Dodge Poetry Festival, an event that has to-date engaged more than 150,000 people including 45,000 high school students, on Oct 17-19, 2024. The Festival will be hosted by the Dodge Foundation at NJPAC, which has welcomed poets and artists from across the United States to Newark every other year since 2010, and it will feature performances, readings, and special programs designed to build a community of poets and citizens mobilizing for racial and social justice, repair, and healing.

“The Dodge Foundation has a long legacy of creating opportunities for people to explore and engage with poetry. Now, the reimagined Dodge Poetry will expand our ability to reach new places and people, and focus our programming on artists and activists who interrogate and address issues of social justice,” says Tanuja Dehne, President and CEO of the Dodge Foundation. “By holding these events and the festival across Newark, we will honor the city’s legacy and further amplify the voices and narratives of those who have been at the forefront of activism for racial justice.”

“Ours is a city of the arts, a center of creativity where there are so many stories that need to be heard. Through this initiative, we look forward to sharing the aspirations and realities of all Newarkers” said John Schreiber, President and CEO of NJPAC. “All of us at the Arts Center are excited that the Dodge Foundation is collaborating with us on creating authentic, community-centric programs that spotlight poetry as a means to advocate for social justice and artistic expression.”

To help shape and guide the events and strategy over the year, Dodge Poetry has convened an Advisory Committee of award-winning poets and activists: Sean Battle, CEO and Founder of EvoluCulture Ventures, a Newark-based integrated arts organization that holds space for artists and art lovers; Tamiko Beyer, a social justice communications writer and strategist with roots in radical queer organizing, racial justice organizing, and art activism; Naomi Extra, a poet, writer, cartoonist, and scholar with a PhD in American Studies from Rutgers Newark; Willie Perdomo, a two-time New York Foundation of the Arts Poetry Fellow and former NY state Poet Laureate;  and Vincent Toro, an award-winning Puerto Rican poet, playwright, stage performer, author of two poetry collections, and full time professor at Rider University.

More information about Dodge Poetry, upcoming shows, and events can be found at njpac.org/dodgepoetry. The Dodge Poetry Festival does have an open submission process, and applications will be accepted for performance consideration beginning in mid-February.

WOMEN IN POWER: CELEBRATING WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Girl Talk (scene) Photo : worldchannel.org.

    By Mabel Pais

‘WOMEN BE SEEN, BE HEARD, BE CELEBRATED’ is the theme of World Channel’s (worldchannel.org) presentation of films for Women’s History Month.

Celebrate women – their history and present – appreciating the hard won battles for gender equality and recognizing how much more we all have to work toward.

For too long, women in the United States, and around the globe, have been overlooked and oppressed, their intelligence, talents and opinions suppressed to maintain a patriarchal status quo. Today, through the achievement of trailblazers who fought against inequality, and the many waves of the feminist movement, women of all identities are able to demonstrate their leadership and power in science, politics, the arts and beyond.

This Women’s History Month, watch films that showcase how women are working against deep-rooted gender discrimination and stereotypes while advocating for their stories to be told – from the groundbreakers of the suffrage movement to the high school students amplifying their voices to win championships and parity on a Massachusetts high school debate team in the new Local USA special ‘Girl Talk.’

To access the month’s film schedule, visit worldchannel.org. The films are also available on other viewing platforms: pbs.org, youtube.com, Apple Podcasts (apple.com/apple-podcasts) and Spotify (spotify.com).

    About the Women@NJPAC

Women@NJPAC is celebrating 26 years and over $54 million raised to support NJPAC and its programs that enrich the lives of our current and future generations of cultural citizens.

Established in 1994, and originally known as “The Women’s Board of NJPAC” and later “the Women’s Association (WA) of NJPAC,” the organization began with only nine members. These “founding mothers” not only helped raise the funding necessary to open the Arts Center in October of 1997, they also grew their small band into a powerhouse of fundraising and “friend-raising” that today proudly numbers over 2,000 members.

For years, the WA has worked with the Arts Center to fulfill its mission to innovate, educate, collaborate, and advocate.

In addition, over the past 26 years, the Women@NJPAC has become an organization that not only supports the work of the Arts Center, but serves as a networking venue par excellence for New Jersey women, and a funder with a particular focus on issues impacting women and girls.

Women@NJPAC annually hosts multiple events on and off the Arts Center campus, including ‘A Gathering of Givers’, an annual convening of women active in philanthropy, held on International Women’s Day.
