Prem Bhandari, Chairman of Jaipur Foot USA and President of RANA, Hosts Dinner Reception for visiting Union  Minister  Ramdas Athawale

Athawale commits full support for the upcoming camps being organized in memory of Dr. Ambedkar in Delhi and Mumbai

NEW YORK (TIP): Shri Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, who is on a visit to New York, was honored at a special dinner reception hosted in Long Island by Prem Bhandari, Chairman of Jaipur Foot USA and President of the Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA).

The Minister shares a longstanding association with Jaipur Foot USA. In 2023, he inaugurated two major camps for the differently-abled (Divyangjan) in Hyderabad and Tirupati. These camps were organized in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) of NY, NJ, CT & NE — an organization known for hosting the world’s largest India Day Parade outside India — and Jaipur Foot USA’s parent body, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS).

Speaking at the event, Mr. Bhandari highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s declaration of the “Panch Teerth” — five sacred sites associated with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s life:

    1. Mhow – his birthplace,
    2. Nagpur – Deeksha Bhoomi,
    3. London – where he pursued higher education,
    4. Delhi – where he passed away,
    5. Mumbai – where he was cremated.

To commemorate Dr. Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary in 2016, BMVSS organized two Jaipur Foot camps — one in Mhow and the other at Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur. Mr. Bhandari announced that, under the guidance of BMVSS Founder and Chief Patron Padma Bhushan Shri D.R. Mehta, preparations are underway for upcoming camps in Delhi and Mumbai.

He expressed gratitude for the continued support that BMVSS and Jaipur Foot USA have received from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of External Affairs, under the leadership of  Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Mr. Bhandari also commended India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador P. Harish, for organizing a special event at the UN on June 10 on Jaipur Foot and BMVSS to showcase India’s pioneering work in lower limb disability empowerment. The event will feature the impactful contributions of BMVSS in India and globally. BMVSS Founder and Chief Patron Mr D.R. Mehta and BMVSS President Ambassador Satish Mehta will arrive in New York on June 9 to participate in the event.

Jaipur Foot USA Chairman Prem Bhandari spoke at length about the enormous work being done by Jaipur Foot under the leadership of Mr. D. R. Mehta, Founder and Chief Patron of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), parent body of Jaipur Foot.

The organization has conducted 114 international camps in 44 countries, including 32 camps under the ‘India for Humanity’ initiative — fully sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mr. Bhandari, who recently visited Guatemala and Trinidad & Tobago, said that Jaipur Foot camps have been approved by the Ministry of External Affairs in :

    • Guatemala – 600 limbs
    • Sudan – 600 limbs
    • Trinidad & Tobago – 800 limbs

All three camps will be conducted later this year.

He further shared that an artificial limb fitment center will soon be opened in Malawi with MEA support, following the announcement made by President Droupadi Murmu last year.

Minister Athawale assured Mr. Bhandari of his full support for the upcoming camps in Delhi and Mumbai, being organized in memory of Dr. Ambedkar. He also praised the transformative work carried out by Jaipur Foot USA’s parent organization BMVSS in India and around the world.

Minister Atawale further said he would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider establishing a memorial for Dr. Ambedkar in New York. In response, Mr. Bhandari stated that his family would be the first to contribute toward this noble cause.

Prem Bhandari presented to the Union Minister a brochure of Jaipur Foot.

D.R. Mehta: A Revolutionary Force of Compassion, Innovation, and Social Justice

    By Prem Bhandari

In a world often dominated by personal ambition and fleeting recognition, few individuals leave behind a legacy that truly transforms millions of lives. One such revolutionary figure is Mr. D.R. Mehta – the visionary founder and Chief Patron of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), the parent body of the world-renowned Jaipur Foot.

A Jaipur Foot camp was organized at Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, on April 14, 2016, to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated.
In the picture, among others, from L to R: Prem Bhandari, D.R. Mehta, differently-abled Kamala- recipient of an artificial limb, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Narendra Modi.

Founded in 1975, BMVSS under Mr. Mehta’s leadership has become the world’s largest organization for the rehabilitation of the physically challenged. It has provided dignity and mobility to more than 2.4 million beneficiaries, offering artificial limbs, calipers, and other aids – all completely free of cost to those in need, 95% of whom live below the poverty line.

What sets Mr. Mehta apart is his patient-first, humane approach. With an open-door policy and same-day prosthetic fittings, BMVSS operates around the clock to ensure that patients don’t just get help – they get it with dignity, speed, and compassion. His model has not only inspired millions but has also caught the attention of prestigious institutions. Both Harvard Business School and IIM Bangalore have written case studies on BMVSS and Jaipur Foot. Renowned management guru Prof. C.K. Prahalad even featured BMVSS in his iconic book The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid.

A Jaipur Foot camp was organized at Nagpur-Diksha Bhoomi- on October 14, 2016.
Seen in the picture, among others, from L to R: D.R. Mehta, Prem Bhandari, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Phadnavis. Seated is a differently-abled boy who received an artificial limb.

Mr. Mehta’s impact is international. He has spearheaded 114 limb-fitment camps across 44 countries, including conflict-ridden areas like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Palestine. His model blends technology with empathy, partnering with institutions such as Stanford University, MIT, and IITs to continuously upgrade BMVSS’s innovation. TIME Magazine recognized the Jaipur Knee, developed with Stanford, as one of the 50 Best Inventions of the World in 2009.

A staunch Gandhian, Mr. Mehta practices what he preaches. Through initiatives in remote, violence-hit areas like Sukma and Dantewada, he has brought hope where it was long lost. His literary work includes over 70 books on Gandhism and peace, and he holds key positions in Gandhian institutions.

A Jaipur Foot camp was organized at Mahudi, Ahmedabad. It was hosted by Ajay Patel, President, BRUHUD Seniors, in memory of his late father Shashikant Bhai Patel. D.R. Mehta addressed the gathering. Seen in the picture, among others, from L to R: Ajay Patel, Prem Bhandari, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, former Foreign Secretary of India, S.J. In recognition of his unparalleled service, Mr. Mehta has received numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan (2008), Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavna Award (2012), and international honors such as the TECH Museum Innovation Award (USA).

Before his social work journey, Mr. Mehta was a distinguished IAS officer (1961 batch), holding critical positions in both state and central governments. He served as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and later as Chairman of SEBI, where he oversaw landmark reforms in India’s capital market from 1995 to 2002.

Born in 1937, Mr. Mehta is an alumnus of Rajasthan University, Royal Institute of Public Administration (London), and the Alfred Sloan School of Management, MIT. He has also served on MIT’s board for Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Prem Bhandari, Founder of Overseas Friends of Ram Mandir Attends Welcome Celebration of Ayodhya Shri Ram Lalla in Trinidad & Tobago

NEW YORK (TIP): A grand welcome celebration for Ayodhya Shri Ram Lalla was organized by the Ayodhya Shri Ram Organisation of Trinidad & Tobago, in collaboration with Overseas Friends of Ram Mandir, New York, and supported by over 40 local organizations. The event coincided with the commemoration of 180 years since the arrival of East Indians to Trinidad & Tobago.

Thousands gathered to witness the unveiling of an exact replica of the Ram Lalla idol from Ayodhya, which had arrived from India especially for the occasion.

Dr. Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit Indian High Commissioner to Trinidad & Tobago addresses the gathering.

In a press release, Amit Alagh, Chairman of the Ayodhya Shri Ram Organisation, expressed pride in the massive turnout and the spiritual significance of the event.

The idol was jointly unveiled by Dr. Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit, Indian High Commissioner to Trinidad & Tobago, Prem Bhandari, Founder of Overseas Friends of Ram Mandir, New York & Chairman of Jaipur Foot USA, Swami Brahmswaroopanand Ji, who specially blessed the event, and Sieunarine Coosal, a prominent local leader and philanthropist.

Major Sponsors of the celebrations included Coosals Group of companies, Alagh Stores, Xtra Foods, Persad’s The Food Kings, Little Store, and R Ramdass & Co.

Dr. Rajpurohit, who served as the Chief Guest, delivered a heartfelt address referencing numerous verses from the Ramcharitmanas and Ramayan, emphasizing the eternal relevance of Shri Ram. He also congratulated newly re-elected Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India was the first global leader to congratulate her on her second term earlier this month.

In a major announcement, Dr. Rajpurohit shared that an artificial limb fitment camp (Jaipur Foot) will soon be organized in Trinidad & Tobago under the “India for Humanity” initiative by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The camp, conducted by Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) — the parent body of Jaipur Foot USA — will benefit over 800 differently-abled (Divyang) individuals across the country.

Prem Bhandari, who traveled from New York to attend the ceremony, stated:
“It doesn’t feel like I am in Trinidad — it feels like I am in Ayodhya. Even after 180 years, the faith of Indians in Trinidad in Sanatan Dharma is as deep and strong as that of Indians living in India or anywhere else in the world.”

He also highlighted that Trinidad is perhaps the only country where Ramayan chanting takes place daily, and noted the presence of one of the world’s tallest Hanuman Murtis, standing 85 feet tall, located right in Trinidad.

The celebrations included vibrant devotional singing by local groups as well as performers from India, creating an atmosphere of divine joy and unity.

The press release also recalled the massive turnout for previous spiritual events organized in collaboration with Overseas Friends of Ram Mandir, New York, including the Ayodhya Pran Pratishtha celebrations in January and Hanuman Chalisa chanting in April, both of which drew thousands of devotees.

Speaking with The Indian Panorama, on his return from Trinidad, Bhandari stated that “Trinidad Truly Deserves the Title “Ramayan Nagri”. “If Trinidad is called Ramayan Nagri, there should be no doubt about it. It is perhaps the only country outside India where daily Ramayan chanting takes place—either in temples or in private homes.”

He further added, “Very soon, we will see a grand temple dedicated to Ram Lalla in Trinidad. After witnessing the deep devotion of Trinidadians of Indian origin, I am confident that an Ayodhya Dham will emerge there. For devotees from the U.S. and Canada who are unable to travel to Ayodhya in India due to the long distance, Trinidad could become a spiritual destination for Ram Lalla’s darshan.”

  • “Didi Krishna’s Path to Peaceful Prosperity” Packs New York’s Marble Collegiate Church

Krishna Das & Didi Krishna Kumari Gather 1,000+ New Yorkers for a Night of Chant, Wisdom, and Upliftment through Kirtan, Storytelling, and Meditation.

NEW YORK, NY (TIP):  More than 1,000 spiritual seekers from the tri-state region —and from as far as Los Angeles and London—filled Manhattan’s landmark Marble Collegiate Church on May 28 for Path to Peaceful Prosperity, an evening of music, insight, and collective meditation hosted by the Sadhu Vaswani Center for World Peace (SVCWP).

The historic church held deep symbolic value, as Dada J.P. Vaswani was a fond admirer of the church’s minister in the 1900’s — Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. Dada would often write about him and drew great inspiration from his teachings on the power of positive thinking. Although Dada never got the chance to visit the church, this gathering served as a heartfelt tribute to that wish, making the moment even more meaningful.

The program opened with television personalities Monica Vaswani and Brian Benni welcoming the audience and distinguished guests. Binaya S. Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York, then offered opening remarks, praising SVCWP’s forthcoming World Peace Center in New Jersey as “a monumental gift of meditation, study, and compassion for America.”

Grammy-nominated kirtan artist Krishna Das lifted the candle-lit sanctuary with a thunderous “Om” and “Om Namah Shivaya,” drawing the entire hall to its feet in joyous devotion. Returning the room to a hush, Grammy winner and philanthropist Chandrika Tandon shared how the writings of Rev. Dada J. P. Vaswani guided her through life’s most difficult chapters, calling the evening “a beacon of light for New York.”

Spiritual luminary Didi Krishna Kumari then stepped forward to reveal what she called “the secret pathway to prosperity.” Redefining “PEACE as Prosperity Emanating As Conscious Expansion”, she gave a new definition to each alphabet in the letter peace and offered them as instrumental keys and practical “soul tools” to unlock prosperity, moving seamlessly into a ten-minute guided meditation to tap into the ‘abundance mindset’ that left faces and hearts across the nave quietly radiant. Attendees described the night as “a milestone for Indian spirituality in New York.”

Among the many dignitaries were global representatives of Indiaspora including Shoba Viswanathan, Shiv Khemka, Sunil Wadhwani, Ramola Motwani, as well as community leaders Ranju and Ratan Batra, and Sunil and Sharmila Sani, filmmakers, authors, vegan ambassadors, physicians, artists, and faith leaders. The event was organized entirely by the youth wing of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission, Bridge Builders NYC. SVCWP’s full 24-member committee attended with their families, underscoring the project’s community-driven spirit.

  • Nassau Democratic Legislators Push to Slash Nassau’s Outrageous Small Business Fees

Nassau Democratic Legislators Push to Slash Nassau’s Outrageous Small Business Fees

New Legislation Would Deliver Relief to Over 30 Types of Small Businesses Burdened by Excessive County Licensing Costs

BELLMORE, NY (TIP): At a press conference held on May 22 at All American Cleaners, Nassau County Legislator Seth I. Koslow, joined by colleagues Delia DeRiggi-Whitton and Olena Nicks, unveiled legislation to permanently cut small business license fees across Nassau County — fees that currently run three to five times higher than in neighboring Suffolk County. “This isn’t about giving small businesses a handout. it’s about stopping a county government that keeps handing them the bill,” said Legislator Koslow. “Right now, we’re charging local entrepreneurs like they’re major corporations. These fees are outdated, unfair, and driving people out of Nassau.”

The proposed legislation targets more than 30 categories of business licenses, including dry cleaners, locksmiths, dog groomers, health clubs, home service providers, and more — slashing annual fees that currently reach up to $1,300 per business.

Mark, the owner of All American Dry Cleaners, pays $650 per year just for the license to operate, a figure nearly unheard of elsewhere.

“If you want to groom dogs, hang a sign, or fix locks in Nassau, you’re looking at hundreds of dollars in yearly fees. It reads less like a licensing schedule and more like a shakedown list,” Koslow added.

While these everyday business owners are struggling, the lawmakers criticized County Executive Bruce Blakeman for prioritizing “fireworks, photo ops, and political rallies” over real economic relief.

“Bruce Blakeman can find millions for celebrations,” Koslow said, “but nothing for the people who power our economy.”

Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton said the fee structure exposes the hypocrisy of an administration that claims to support small business while leaning on them to pad the budget:

“Whether you’re in Glen Cove or Bellmore, small businesses are getting squeezed. We’ve seen what this administration values: vanity projects. But ask a pet groomer or gym owner how that helps pay their $650 licensing fee. This bill is what real relief looks like.”

Legislator Olena Nicks emphasized the equity and economic justice at the heart of the proposal:

“Why should a young entrepreneur in Nassau pay triple what someone pays across the county line? That’s not competition, that’s punishment. These fees hit hardest for women, minority, and veteran-owned startups. This bill is how we level the playing field.”

Legislator Debra Mulé echoed the urgency of reform.

“Nassau’s economy runs on small business, and those businesses are being choked by outdated fees. Cutting them is not just good policy, it’s the right thing to do. This legislation puts working people and local entrepreneurs first.”

The proposal comes at a time when Nassau’s small businesses need help the most. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Nassau is home to over 200,000 small businesses. Small businesses make up over 99% of all businesses in the county and employ the majority of Nassau’s workforce.

Koslow will introduce the legislation at the next meeting of the Nassau County Legislature. The sponsors are urging bipartisan support to fast-track the measure before the summer session ends.

“At a time when families are feeling the squeeze, the least we can do is stop squeezing the businesses that keep our communities alive,” Koslow said. “If Bruce Blakeman won’t lead on that, we will.”

  • UN Women remarks at the Security Council: No Peace Without Protecting Women and Girls

UN Women remarks at the Security Council: No Peace Without Protecting Women and Girls

UNITED NATIONS (TIP): “Today, I will focus on forms of gender-based violence that are too often overlooked: reproductive violence, explosive armed violence, mental trauma, and targeted attacks on women in public life—threats increasingly enabled by digital technologies”, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous remarked at the Security Council.

“61 per cent of all maternal deaths occur in just 35 conflict-affected countries. In the past year, we have seen bombed maternity wards, blockaded medical supplies, and massive funding cuts.

“In Afghanistan, where 90 per cent of women lack access to essential healthcare services, a woman dies from preventable pregnancy-related complications every two hours. One third already deliver without medical assistance. With bans on female workers and shrinking access to care, maternal deaths are projected to rise by 50 per cent by 2026. “In Gaza, over 28,000 women and girls have been killed since October 2023: an average of one woman and one girl killed every hour. Tens of thousands have given birth under bombardment and siege, without anesthetics, without postpartum care or clean water, and while being malnourished, displaced, and traumatized.

“These are not natural consequences of war. They constitute a pattern of reproductive violence. Today, I urge that we treat reproductive violence as a distinct category of harm and hold perpetrators accountable.”

“Violence leaves scars not only on the body, but on the mind. Trauma compounds over time, especially when layered with loss, with displacement, and with constant fear. Mental health is not a luxury—it is life-saving.

“In Gaza, 75 per cent of women suffer from depression. Girls say they wish they were dead.

“In Afghanistan, women speak of living in prisons.

“In Ukraine, domestic violence is rising, and more than half of displaced women report depression.”

“Women who speak out—journalists, activists, politicians—face bullets, bombs, threats, and smear campaigns.

“Even when not physically attacked, they are driven out by digital violence: deepfakes, harassment, and disinformation. “In Ukraine, 81 per cent of women journalists report facing online abuse.”

“I come to you with three asks:

“First, the Council must do more to support justice and accountability for women and girls. These atrocities continue in part because they are committed with impunity. “Second, support women’s organizations on the frontlines. Despite everything, women resist with courage, with leadership, and with care.

“Third, recognize women’s empowerment as a protection strategy. Protection and participation go hand in hand. The most effective shield we can offer women and girls is their own power, their own voice, and their own leadership.”

  • Alexandra Badaway of North Brunswick Is Named Middlesex College Class of 2025 Valedictorian

Alexandra Badaway of North Brunswick Is Named Middlesex College Class of 2025 Valedictorian

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ – Alexandra Badaway of North Brunswick will speak as class valedictorian at the 2025 Middlesex College Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the Jersey Mike’s Arena.

“When I found out I was named valedictorian, I felt an overwhelming mix of pride, gratitude, and disbelief. It was a full-circle moment,” said Badaway.

After overcoming a health crisis, financial struggles, and personal loss, beginning her academic journey at Middlesex College offered Badaway a fresh start. She credits programs like the Equal Opportunity Fund for providing her with the resources to not just survive, but thrive.

“I needed a place to heal and grow. Middlesex College offered me more than academics; it gave me a sense of belonging and a community that believed in me,” said Badaway. “It was here that I found my purpose and started rewriting my story.”

As Badaway became more comfortable in the college environment, she found herself falling into a “big sister” role for her peers on campus. She led the Juvenile Justice Reform Club, became a Bonner Leader, an ESL tutor, and a resource for students who faced language and academic barriers like she once had.

“I’ve helped classmates apply for scholarships, navigate college systems, and tap into opportunities,” said Badaway. “The person who represents the student body should be motivated by collective success, not just individual gains. That’s what drives me. We are a team, and I’ve always believed that when one of us wins, we all win.”

While juggling work, classes, and mentoring fellow students, Badaway continued to maintain her 4.0 GPA. She is also a Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member, America Needs You Fellow, 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar, and recently became a semi-finalist for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

The leadership and advocacy opportunities Middlesex College provided confirmed Badaway’s career path. She plans to use her education to become a changemaker in law, public policy, or higher education and advocate for justice-impacted communities.

“My future is rooted in service, specifically in the fields of law, public policy, or education,” said Badaway. “Middlesex College gave me the tools and the clarity to chase a future where I can shape systems, fight for justice, and empower the next generation.” While she has not finalized where she will transfer, she has quite a remarkable list to choose from. Badaway has already been accepted into Columbia and New York University, but her decision will ultimately depend on funding.

Though Commencement is approaching, this may not be the last you see of Badaway on campus. As she states, one of her goals is to use her future education to give back to the community.

“One day, I hope to return to Middlesex College as a mentor or educator, to give back to the institution that played such a pivotal role in transforming my life and dreams,” said Badaway.

  • NYC budget: Mayor Adams unveils $115 billion re-election year plan flush with new spending

NYC budget: Mayor Adams unveils $115 billion re-election year plan flush with new spending

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): The mayor’s spending plan is up roughly $600 million from his $114.5 billion preliminary budget released in January and $3 billion from the Fiscal Year 2025 budget adopted last June. It comes at a time when the city faces President Trump’s threats of large-scale federal funding cuts and the looming possiblity of a recession, but does not add any new funds to the city’s $8.5 billion in reserves to the chagrin of several pols and good government groups.
Adams has been framing the fiscal blueprint as the “best budget ever,” one that will help working-class New Yorkers like the students who attend Bayside High School and his late mother, Dorothy Mae Adams-Streeter. The framing dovetails with Adams’ re-election platform focused on affordability and public safety.

“When my team and I came together to develop this budget, I thought of my younger self and how my mother worked three jobs just to put food on the table for me and my siblings,” Adams said during his Thursday budget address. “She was betrayed by the city. This budget is for her and it’s for young Eric, who struggled in life and in school. And for all of you, this budget makes sure that you don’t have to struggle the way that me and my family did.”

With the release of Adams’ executive budget, negotiations will begin in earnest between his office and the City Council over the final shape of the spending plan, which must be passed by a July 1 deadline. The two sides of City Hall have had hard-fought battles over the budget in years past, a dynamic that could be exacerbated by City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams’ bid to unseat Mayor Adams, to whom she is not related, in this year’s election.

In a departure from Adams’ previous budget announcements, many of which were marked by his wide-ranging cuts aimed at offsetting the city’s massive spending on migrants, he has made his re-election-year budget rollout a celebratory affair. Adams claims he is able to spend more on popular city programs this year because of his “strong fiscal management,” better than expected tax revenue, and success in cutting spending on the migrant crisis.

The mayor’s Budget Director Jacques Jiha said they are also using money gleaned from past savings and tax revenues to cover $1 billion the city expected in migrant aid from the state that Gov. Kathy Hochul did not deliver.

However, City Council leaders have often argued Adams made cuts unnecessarily because the city had enough money in its coffers all along. The plan still does not fully restore some funding cuts to levels championed by the City Council in its own budget plan released last month.

Speaker Adams and Council Finance Chair Justin Brannan, in a joint statement, said Mayor Adams’ budget “for the first time” funds many of the priorities they included in their fiscal plan.

“This is how the budget process should work, but it’s disappointing that it took three years for this administration to become tired of being entirely on the wrong side of doing right by New Yorkers,” they said. “There remains work to fill gaps in funding for programs left out of this budget, but this is a better start from the Executive Budget than past years.”

The mayor’s rosiest budget presentation to date comes as he makes a long-shot bid for a second term in the November general election, after opting out of the Democratic primary and deciding to run as an independent. He is seeking to show New Yorkers why they should give him another four years in City Hall amid record-low job approval rating numbers and in the aftermath of his now-dismissed federal indictment.

Before releasing the full budget on Thursday, Adams made separate announcements in which he touted its investments in supportive housing and tenant protection programs, the addition of free after-school seats in a new push to make the initiative universal, and the boosting of NYPD headcount to 35,000 next fall with new funding and policy changes .

According to City Hall, the plan also commits $199 million in recurring funding—known as baselining—for education programs that were previously supported by now-expired COVID-19 stimulus dollars. The funding will go towards arts education in schools, teacher recruitment, and a mentorship program called “Project Pivot,“ among other areas.

Furthermore, the budget allocates $1.4 billion in baselined funding for programs that were not funded in the upcoming fiscal year. Those areas include savings for CUNY, continuing the current level of litter basket collection, and increasing funding for cultural institutions.

Although the plan allocates $15.7 million in new funding for the city’s three library systems, a frequent target of Adams’ budget cuts in previous cycles, it still does not reach the $62.5 million the council pushed for.

The budget also restores dollars to areas where Adams previously made cuts and baselines the funding going forward. Those include $167 million for the city’s 3-K and universal Pre-K programs and $112 million in funding for senior centers and home-delivered meals.

But that amount falls short of the $197 million the council says is needed for both 3-K and universal pre-K special education seats.
