  • Final state budget includes Gov. Hochul’s affordability measures as she prepares for tough 2026 re-election fight

Final state budget includes Gov. Hochul’s affordability measures as she prepares for tough 2026 re-election fight

ALBANY (TIP): The long-overdue state budget deal includes several measures Gov. Kathy Hochul pushed to ease New York’s affordability crisis as she gears up for a tough re-election campaign next year. The $254 billion-plus Fiscal Year 2026 budget, which state lawmakers were still voting on Thursday, is chock-full of actions aimed at lowering everyday costs. The plan includes one-time inflation refund checks for over 8 million tax filers, a middle-class tax cut, universal free school lunches, and a statewide housing voucher pilot program.

“I vowed to deliver on a sweeping affordability agenda that does something that is so profound, but yet so simple: putting more money back in your pockets,” Hochul said during an April 30 press conference. “And promises made, promises kept.”

The governor will sign the affordability-focused fiscal plan just months before heading into what is shaping up to be a tough race for re-election. She has doubled down on combating rising costs, along with stemming fears around crime, as challengers on both the left and right are lining up to run against her next year.

Her focus on the issue also appeared to be a response to the 2024 presidential election, in which many Americans cited high inflation and public safety concerns as reasons they voted for President Trump.

Hochul’s rebate checks gambit promises to put a collective $2 million back in New Yorkers’ pockets. It will go to New Yorkers who filed a 2023 tax return and had a state adjusted-gross income of up to $150,000 if they were single filers, and up to $300,000 for joint filers.

Individual filers who made up to $75,000 will get a $200 check, while those who made between $75,000 and $150,000 will get $150 checks. Joint filers who made up to $150,000 will receive a $400 check, while those who made between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $300 checks.

The governor is also cutting income taxes for 8.3 million middle-class New Yorkers, making up to $323,000 annually for joint filers.

Her plan will also make free public school breakfasts and lunches universal, a move her office says will save families an estimated $165 a month on groceries.

    Critics decry ‘dubious’ savings

However, the budget drew backlash from state lawmakers, charging that the governor’s affordability measures are surface-level and will not meaningfully lower costs for New Yorkers.

Brooklyn state Sen. Andrew Gounardes, in a statement, charged the spending plan “nickels and dimes” vital social safety net programs, while spending billions on “dubious tax breaks and gimmicks.”

“New Yorkers will get a paltry, one-time ‘rebate check’ for a few hundred dollars and a minuscule tax cut—eventually,” he said in a Thursday statement.

Gounardes also blasted Hochul’s expansion of the state’s child tax credit, which promises to give families earning below a certain income threshold up to $1,000 per child under age four to cover expenses like groceries and rent. He said it falls far short of his own proposal to implement a so-called “Working Families Tax Credit” — legislation that would see the state give families up to $1,600 per child.

“And while expanding the child tax credit for young children is better than nothing, the vast majority of families will get a credit that doesn’t come close to the rising cost of living that is pushing them to the brink,” he said.

Indian stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kiara Advani, and more shine bright at fashion’s grandest fest – Met Gala 2025

The former VP of America Kamala Harris makes surprise debut in tailored Off-White gown

The event, an annual fundraising affair for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, featured celebrities who were dressed as per the theme of this year’s edition: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”

NEW YORK (TIP): Stars from film, music, and fashion converged at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, United States, on Tuesday (May 6), for the Met Gala, dubbed as ‘fashion’s biggest night out.’ The event, set to raise funds for the Costume Institute, grabbed the attention of viewers all around the world, but this year’s edition was particularly special to India as some of its biggest stars made stunning appearances at the blue carpet.

The event undoubtedly belonged to the ‘Baadshah of Bollywood,’ superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who made a grand debut to become the first-ever Indian male actor to attend the Met. One of the biggest living icons of Indian cinema, Khan dazzled on the Met carpet in a sublime black suit with gold accessories, a walking cane, a brooch and a long pendant bearing the letter K — for King Khan. Khan’s outfit was crafted by ace Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who also joined Khan on the blue carpet.

Meanwhile, Met Gala habitue Priyanka Chopra Jonas turned heads on the blue carpet with a tailored polka dot suit dress, a bespoke creation by Olivier Rousteing of Balmain. Accenting her gorgeous ensemble were dazzling high jewelry from Bvlgari, the luxury Italian house for which Chopra serves as a global ambassador. The star, accompanied by her husband and singer Nick Jonas, made her fifth appearance at the Met.

Bollywood fans who were glued to the live stream of the event also saw Indian actor Kiara Advani make her debut at the Met Gala. Kiara, an accomplished female star currently expecting her first child, glowed on the Met carpet in a stunning black-gold-white ensemble. In a tender celebration of motherhood, her black gown with gold embellishments and a long white trail bore a heart-shaped mini plate for the baby.

Oh, how can we forget Diljit Dosanjh’s mesmerizing drip! The Indian pop star and actor, in his debut appearance at the Met Gala, wore a stunning royal Punjabi outfit. The custom-made number celebrating Diljit’s cultural roots is by ace designer Prabal Gurung.

The costume was also a nod to the evening’s dress code, “Tailored To You,” which meant the guests were bringing a part of their own cultural flair to their attire. The theme of the Met Gala is selected per the theme of the Costume Institute’s latest exhibition. And this year, the theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book ‘Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.’

United States’ former Vice President Kamala Harris made a memorable appearance at the 2025 Met Gala, marking her debut at the fashion industry’s biggest event.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harris stunned in a bespoke black-and-cream gown designed by Off-White creative director IB Kamara, perfectly capturing the essence of the evening’s theme, ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.’

Harris’s Met Gala look departed from her typical well-tailored pantsuits. The outfit, featuring a dramatic sleeve and silk scarf, was a masterclass in elegance and sophistication.

Kamara’s inspiration behind the design was to highlight Harris’s strength and confidence, qualities he believes are at the core of dandyism. “The precise simplicity of this black and cream look for Kamala D. Harris complements her own strength and confidence, two qualities I consider to be the core of dandyism,” Kamara said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

The Met Gala is an annual fundraising affair for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Started in 1948 by American fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, the event has grown in prestige and scale over the years.

Reflecting on past milestones, Bhandari recalled that in 2016, Jaipur Foot USA, through its parent organization Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), held a mega camp in Mhow, Indore, to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. In the year 2018, the Ministry of External Affairs launched the ‘India for Humanity’ initiative as part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi. Since 2018, under the “India for Humanity” initiative 32 international Jaipur Foot camps have been successfully conducted across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Bhandari emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly believes in the ancient Indian philosophy encapsulated in the Maha Upanishad (Chapter 6, Verse 71): “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” — “The world is one family.” Inspired by this timeless ideal, many more humanitarian camps are being planned for the future.

WAVES 2025 Is India’s Moment to Shine, Says Emmy-Nominated Filmmaker Tirlok Malik

NEW YORK (TIP): As Mumbai prepares to host the inaugural World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, there’s palpable excitement among global creative minds. Among them is Tirlok Malik, the New York-based Emmy-nominated Indian-American filmmaker, wellness advocate, and proud ambassador of India’s cultural spirit. Malik, known for his soul-stirring films that bridge the Indian diaspora and the homeland, calls WAVES 2025 a “watershed moment” in India’s journey toward becoming a global creative superpower.

“This summit is not just another event,” says Malik with a characteristic warmth in his voice. “It is a visionary platform that reflects India’s bold and beautiful leap into the future of media, storytelling, and soft power.”

Malik sees WAVES as the “Davos for Creators,” echoing Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw’s sentiments. “Just as Davos sets the tone for global economic policy, WAVES 2025 has the potential to shape creative policies, collaborations, and commerce across borders,” he says.

With over 1 lakh registrations and 750 top creators set to showcase their work, Malik believes the world will see not only the depth of India’s artistic talent, but also the strength of its new creative economy model—one where the next great filmmaker may emerge from a remote village, armed not with a giant studio but with a phone, vision, and internet access.

“This is India 2.0 in motion,” Malik declares, “and I deeply appreciate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unwavering belief in our creators. He understands that true leadership today lies not just in politics or economics, but in culture, storytelling, and digital transformation. He’s making space for creators in the global conversation.”

A lifelong promoter of Indian culture and values in the West, Malik sees WAVES 2025 as a cultural bridge—an ecosystem where filmmakers, artists, tech innovators, buyers, and audiences converge. “This summit is showing the world that India is not just consuming content anymore—we are creating it, selling it, exporting it, and setting global trends,” he says.

Asked what he hopes to see come out of WAVES, Malik shares a hopeful vision: “I want Indian youth—filmmakers, animators, musicians—to know that their voices matter. This is their time. WAVES is giving them not just a platform, but a future.”

Committed to his lifelong work blending wellness, storytelling, and India’s cultural identity, Malik sees WAVES as the perfect launchpad. “We’re not just telling stories,” he says with a smile, “we’re shaping the narrative of a new India—confident, creative, and globally respected.”

Legislator Solages Applauds Deployment of Speed Indicator Near Valley Stream Schools, Continues Advocacy to Curb Speeding

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (TIP): Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) applauded the Nassau County Police Department’s deployment of a speed indicator at the intersection of Corona Avenue and Rockaway Parkway in Valley Stream.

Legislator Solages is continuing to meet with school and community leaders and conduct extensive outreach to NCPD officials seeking remedies for excessive speeding near the James A. Dever and Wheeler Avenue Schools. Citing speeding, double parking and unsafe U-turns that create a hazardous environment for children and community members, Legislator Solages in January wrote to the Department of Public Works, urging them to pursue a traffic safety assessment of Rockaway Parkway near Wheeler Avenue Elementary.

“We must have a focused effort, like New York City’s Vision Zero program, to address speeding in western Nassau County – especially in District 3, which has some of Nassau’s most dangerous and heavily traveled roadways,” Legislator Solages said. “I am thankful that the County heeded my advocacy to protect pedestrians and motorists by placing this speed indicator, and I encourage everyone to do their part to bring about long-term solutions that keep us all safe.”

  • President Trump’s Gift on the Eve of the World Press Freedom Day: An Executive Order

President Trump’s Gift on the Eve of the World Press Freedom Day: An Executive Order

Trump’s executive order aims to stop what he called “biased and partisan news coverage.”

LONG ISLAND, NY (TIP): National Public Radio and PBS television stations on Long Island will no longer receive federal funding under an executive order signed late Thursday, May 1, by President Donald Trump to stop what he called “biased and partisan news coverage.”

On Long Island, that includes WLIW21 for PBS and WLIW-FM for NPR. A message on the WLIW website directed viewers and listeners to make their voices heard at the “Protect My Public Media” site. “Public media is facing multiple serious threats,” Protect My Public Media said. “The White House proposed eliminating federal funding in its annual budget request, issued an executive order to block support for PBS and NPR, and plans to claw back funding approved by Congress.”

The executive order instructs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other federal agencies “to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS” and further requires that they work to root out indirect sources of public financing for the news organizations.

“Government funding of news media in this environment is not only outdated and unnecessary but corrosive to the appearance of journalistic independence,” the executive order says.

The White House, in a social media posting announcing the signing, said the outlets “receive millions from taxpayers to spread radical, woke propaganda disguised as ‘news.’”

The broadcasters get roughly half a billion dollars in public money through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and have been preparing for the possibility of stiff cuts since Trump’s election, as Republicans have long complained about them.

Paula Kerger, PBS’ CEO and president, said in a statement last month that the Trump administration’s effort to rescind funding for public media would “disrupt the essential service PBS and local member stations provide to the American people.”

“There’s nothing more American than PBS, and our work is only possible because of the bipartisan support we have always received from Congress,” she said. “This public-private partnership allows us to help prepare millions of children for success in school and in life and also supports enriching and inspiring programs of the highest quality.”

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting sued Trump earlier this week over his move to fire three members of its five-person board, contending that the president was exceeding his authority and that the move would deprive the board of a quorum needed to conduct business.

Just two weeks ago, the White House said it would be asking Congress to rescind funding for the CPB as part of a $9.1 billion package of cuts. That package, however, which budget director Russell Vought said would likely be the first of several, has not yet been sent to Capitol Hill.

The move against PBS and NPR comes as his administration has been working to dismantle the U.S. Agency for Global Media, including Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, which were designed to model independent news gathering globally in societies that restrict the press.

Those efforts have faced pushback from federal courts, who have ruled in some cases that the Trump administration may have overstepped its authority in holding back funds appropriated to the outlets by Congress.

Sundar Venugopalan from the Sri Sathya Sai Global Council Flushing, New York, who received the proclamation said Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s main teaching was that the essence of all religions is one, “urging us to see the divine spark within each and every creation.” He said that the Sri Sathya Sai Centers worldwide, including in New York, foster spiritual growth and community outreach. “This centennial year, we are committed to expanding our service to those in need right here in New York City.”

We offer our deepest gratitude to Bhagawan for this divine blessing. This recognition from New York City—one of the world’s most vibrant and diverse cities—beautifully echoes Bhagawan’s vision of global unity, service, and spiritual harmony.

Indian American community is filled with rage over terrorist killings of Hindus in Pahalgam

    • I.S. Saluja

NEW YORK (TIP): Scores of organizations of Indian Americans have expressed shock and rage, and condemned the inhuman killings of innocent Hindus in a terrorist strike in Pahalgam on April 22 . In the worst massacre after the Pulwama terrorist attack in February 2019 , in which 40 Indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed, 28 persons lost their lives to the madness of the terrorists.

The Global Indian Diaspora Alliance (GLO-INDIA) President Harry Panaser, strongly condemning the terrorist attack said,   “We in GLO-INDIA reaffirm our solidarity and resolve in the fight against terrorism and wherever it occurs, and the Indian Diaspora will remain united with the Government of India’s efforts to combat terrorism.”

“GLO-INDIA extends deepest condolences to the victims of the terrorist attacks and their families.”

GOPIO International  has strongly  condemned the  terrorist action in Pahalgam. The resolution reads: “ The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) unequivocally condemns the terrorist action in Pahalgam area in India where many innocent Civilians and Tourists were wantonly murdered by well-armed terrorists.

“The World cannot idly stand by each time terrorists take actions and nations must unite and take joint actions against terrorists and those that harbor them,’ said Prakash Shah, President of GOPIO International. “That is the only way to end Terrorism,” Shah added.

“We in the GOPIO are reaffirming our solidarity and resolve in the fight against terrorism in all its forms and wherever it occurs, and the Indian Diaspora will remain united with Govt of India’s efforts to combat terrorism,” said GOPIO Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham

“GOPIO extends deepest condolences to the victims of terrorist attacks and their families.”

Indian Overseas Congress has condemned the cowardly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

The IOC resolution reads: “ The Indian Overseas Congress is deeply shocked and outraged by the cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which took the lives of 26 innocent civilians. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and pray for a swift recovery for the injured. This deliberate targeting of civilians is not only an assault on human life but also on the ideals of peace and unity that our nation stands for.

George Abraham, Vice-Chair of the Indian Overseas Congress, USA, stated:

“I condemn the dastardly attack on innocent civilians in Pahalgam, Kashmir. We stand in unwavering solidarity with the people of Kashmir and the families of those affected. It is truly disheartening that Pakistan continues to serve as a safe haven for terrorists and their sympathizers, perpetuating violence with the goal of destabilizing the region. The international community must take serious note of this ongoing threat.”

This attack once again brings into sharp focus the troubling gaps in our internal security apparatus. Despite repeated assurances, the situation on the ground in Jammu and Kashmir remains volatile. Decisions such as the suspension of regular military recruitment, reduced boots on the ground, and limited intelligence coordination are raising serious questions about the strategic priorities of the current administration.

Security must never be compromised—especially in regions that remain on the frontlines of cross-border threats. We urge the Government of India to take immediate and decisive steps to restore full security presence, enhance intelligence capabilities, and ensure that both preventive and responsive mechanisms are strengthened without delay.

The Indian Overseas Congress believes that protecting innocent lives must rise above politics. We call on all responsible institutions to prioritize national security with the urgency it demands and to honor the memory of those lost by ensuring that such tragedies are not repeated.

We stand with the people of Kashmir, and with every Indian who believes in justice, dignity, and a safer future for all.”

US politicians and elected representatives have also condemned the terrorist attack.

Senator Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader posted on X (formerly Twitter) :

    @SenSchumer

My heart breaks for the innocent tourists and locals murdered by terrorists in the revolting attack in Kashmir, and I wish a speedy recovery for the injured. There can be no tolerance for the hatred that breeds this kind of unjustifiable violence.

Journalists Beyond Borders, an international body of journalists , condemning the barbaric act of killing in cold blood of  28 innocent persons, has appealed to the governments of India and Pakistan to ensure such dastardly and inhuman acts do not recur. JBB said it is a votary of peace and looks at the world as a  family, and , as such, it is the duty of each nation to strive for amity and happiness  of all people of the world.

  • Vaisakhi celebrated Enthusiastically at the Indian Consulate in New York

Vaisakhi celebrated Enthusiastically at the Indian Consulate in New York

    • By Parveen Chopra

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): Vaisakhi, the harvest festival of Punjab, and the day when Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th master of the Sikhs created a sect with a distinct identity and called them Khalsa in the year 1699 was celebrated with gusto and enthusiasm at the Indian consulate in New York on April 11. The full room gathering of over a hundred in the ornate Ball Room of the Indian Consulate in New York enjoyed every moment of their presence at the Vaisakhi celebrations organized by The Indian Panorama with the support of the Consulate.

Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan described it as “a joyous celebration honoring the spirit of Baisakhi and Punjab’s rich cultural heritage.”
Speaking about the creation of the Khalsa, Ambassador Pradhan said that Guru Gobind Singh Ji “dedicated a community which was standing for righteousness, and service. He gave them a unique identity and conduct and strength to stand against injustice. That’s what Guru Gobind Singh stood for. And I think in six days, we celebrated two events associated with him, Hola Mohalla and Vaisakhi.

Amb. Pradhan highlighted the teachings of Sikh gurus who emphasized qualities of compassion, harmony, service, and equality. He also recognized the Punjabi community’s contributions to India’s nation-building.

Ambassador Pradhan is very concerned about the malpractices indulged in by some unscrupulous agents who are charging exorbitantly in the name of the Consulate or in the name of providing consular services. He spoke at length about the issue and warned against such agents.

Keynote Speaker Gurcharanjit Singh Lamba, a Sikh scholar and author reflected on the founding of the Khalsa and shared some interesting anecdotes from its history.

Eminent attorney Ravi Batra shared his moving experience at the Golden Temple and saluted the Sikh gurus for saving India as a nation with their sacrifices. I, as a Hindu and founding editor of ALotusInTheMud.com, had the privilege to felicitate the Sikh community on Vaisakhi.

Ahmed Shakir spoke on behalf of Muslims and Koshi Thomas for Christians.
Apart from community leaders among the 100-plus audience, New York State Assemblyman Ed Braunstein, and North Hempstead Town Clerk Ragini Srivastava graced the event and spoke briefly.
Earlier, Prof. Indrajit Singh Saluja, Editor-Publisher of The Indian Panorama, who put together the program, while welcoming the guests, said Vaisakhi used to be a harvest festival of Punjab but in 1699 Guru Gobind Singh chose the day to create Khalsa, a sect with a distinct identity. Thus, today, Vaisakhi is both a socio-cultural event and also the birthday of the Khalsa .

The program began with a soulful Shabad, ‘Deh Shiva var mohe’, which means O Lord! Give me the boon to never turn away from doing good deeds and ended with a lively Bhangra performance.

After Consul, Culture, Pragya Singh kicked off the proceedings, ITV Gold anchor Pia Jyoti Kachroo ably emceed the program. All the presenters were honored with shawls and a replica of the Golden Temple. Amb Pradhan’s wife, Monalisa Shuvadarshini greeted and thanked each presenter.

Delicious appetizers and dinner from Michelin Chef Hemant Mathur’s Saar were served.

Amb. Pradhan thanked The Indian Panorama and Prof Saluja for organizing the event, and for holding the Holi/Hola celebration on Long Island a week earlier.

Rev. William E. Swing.

Dr. Thea Gomelauri, founder of the Oxford Interfaith Forum
Rt. Rev. William E. Swing, founder of United Religions Initiative

The biennial prize – $50,000 split between the two winners – recognizes extraordinary contributions to promoting peaceful dialogue between faiths and cultures. The ceremony will take place April 22, 2025, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY.
“It was our parents desire to bring better understanding among people of various faiths and founded Interfaith Prize in collaboration with Hofstra University to promote interfaith dialogue and to recognize individuals or organizations that bring people together. It is named after Guru Nanak who preached and practiced equality of all human beings irrespective of their religion, caste, color, creed or sex. We are very pleased with the selection of two very well deserving awardees for 2024 Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize” said T J Bindra of Bindra Family.
“The Guru Nanak Prize embodies Hofstra University’s mission to foster global understanding while preparing students to thrive in the complexity of our interconnected world,” said Dr. Eva Badowska, dean of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “At a time when peaceful collaboration, civil discourse, and cultural awareness are essential to addressing profound global challenges, this prize honors the principles of peace, interfaith dialogue, and selfless service that resonate deeply with the University’s values. It reminds us that education is not just about knowledge – it’s about inspiring action and shaping a better future for all.”
From the Halls of Academia to the Grassroots: Two Leaders, One Vision
Dr. Thea Gomelauri, a biblical scholar at the University of Oxford and director of the Oxford Interfaith Forum, has brought together academics across the globe to explore sacred texts and religious traditions through an inclusive lens. Her groundbreaking research on Georgian Jewry – the world’s oldest surviving Jewish diaspora – has helped shed light on forgotten communities and manuscripts, earning her international acclaim. “This prestigious award in the name of Guru Nanak Dev Ji inspires us to continue the promotion of universal peace through interreligious education at this critical time in our history,” Dr. Gomelauri said.
The Forum was recently honored by King Abdullah II of Jordan with the UN World Interfaith Harmony Week Award for its contributions to peace and religious education.
The United Religions Initiative, meanwhile, stands as the largest grassroots interfaith network in the world, spanning more than 100 countries. Born out of a bold vision by Bishop William E. Swing during a 1993 interfaith service at the United Nations, URI now mobilizes everyday people – from youth activists to elders – to build peace in their own communities.
“The generous heart of Guru Nanak was powerful in his time, and through this award the spiritual power only increases,” said Bishop Swing. “To be honored in his name is an inward blessing.”
URI’s work ranges from conflict resolution to environmental sustainability to advocacy for human rights, impacting communities on every continent across the globe.
“We feel proud and grateful for this honor which celebrates URI, its founder, and the entire URI network of interfaith activists who dedicate their lives to a world where we can all live in trust, love and unity, beyond and through our necessary and lauded differences,” said Eric Roux, chair of the URI Global Council.
    Honoring the Legacy of Peace
Founded in 2006 by Sardar Isha Singh Bindra and family. The Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize celebrates the legacy of Guru Nanak, the 15th-century founder of Sikhism, who championed equality, service, and unity across faiths. Past recipients include His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and Dr. Eboo Patel, founder of Interfaith America.
Dr. Julie Byrne, Hofstra University’s Monsignor Thomas Hartman Chair in Catholic Studies and chair of the Department of Religion, said of this year’s honorees, “The committee was deeply impressed by the complementary work done by these two stellar interfaith organizations: the United Religions Initiative that concentrates on grassroots networks of communities, and the Oxford Interfaith Forum that brings together scholars for the sharing and production of new knowledge about religions and their interactions. Community-based and scholarly approaches are both needed to advance understanding and acknowledgment of difference in today’s global world.”

Let’s Share a Meal brings Jersey City Mayoral rivals on one platform

JERSEY CITY (TIP): Political rivals eyeing the Jersey City mayoral seat set aside their differences this week to join hands with the Sikh community for a shared cause of feeding 10,000 people in need. The event, held at the Nanak Naam Jahaj Gurudwara, was part of the long-running “Let’s Share a Meal” campaign, a food drive rooted in the Sikh tradition of seva, or selfless service.

County Commissioner William O’Dea, former Governor of New Jersey James E. McGreevey, former Board of Education President Mussab Ali, Councilman Richard Boggiano, and community leaders came together to cook, pack, and distribute hot meals.

William O’Dea announced April as Sikh Awareness Month.“ I’ll be sponsoring a resolution before the County Board of Commissioners naming this April Sikh Awareness Month. So, if you have a chance, 567 Pavonia Avenue, 4:30, we’ll have Sikh Awareness Month.”

Many of the leaders had their sleeves rolled up. Mussab Ali, who is also running for mayor, was among the first to arrive.

“I think it’s such an important event to make 10,000 hot meals for the people that are homeless here,” Ali said. “We’ve been here since 7:30 in the morning making these hot meals and making sure we can get those delivered. It’s important to give back to our community. Thank you.”

Former Governor McGreevey, known for his longtime ties to Jersey City, spoke with visible admiration for the Sikh tradition of community service.

“Thank you to the Sikh community, which is an incredible community. Jersey City is so blessed, and we’re serving 10,000 meals today,” he said. “And I just want to say, for the interest of clarity, it’s Sikh women that are doing all the work.”

He spoke about his own journey to the Golden Temple in Punjab and the lessons he drew from the Sikh ethos of service.

“The Sikh community has a great religious tradition of giving, of serving… not only in terms of their tradition are they strong warriors and defenders of their faith, but they’re great community leaders, and they give back so much love and so much devotion.”

Veteran Councilman Richard Boggiano, a familiar face at Sikh community events, was struck by the scale and consistency of the effort.

Former New Jersey State Governor Jim McGreevy pushes a food cart

“I’ve been coming here for a number of years, and this is unbelievable,” Boggiano said. “I can’t believe they’re going to feed 10,000 people today. And this community is great.”

Behind the scenes, orchestrating the massive food drive, was longtime organizer Onkar Singh. He expressed: “We’ve been doing this since 2008,” Singh said. “And from the last many years, you are coming and supporting us. That’s the main thing… we love the city. And the city always gives us the opportunity to do all these things.”

Tom Zuppa, President of the Journal Square Community Association, reflected on the personal significance of participating in such events.

Zuppa said that it was “an incredible honor as someone whose family immigrated to America from Italy and Ireland to join in the tradition of giving back that the Sikh community has to this city, to this neighborhood, and to the people throughout Hudson County and New Jersey.” Mr. Onkar Singh thanked the volunteer’s and sponsors who are the force behind this service organization.

Let’s join hands to eradicate childhood blindness and unlock a brighter future for generations to come,” said Dr. Vadrevu K. Raju, a world-renowned ophthalmologist, philanthropist, and the founder of the Eye Foundation of America (EFA) during a Spring Fundraiser Gala in New Rochelle, New York on April 12, 2025. At the gala, organized by Dr. Surendra Sharma and Dr. Rachana Shukla, Eye Foundation of America raised funds to help support a new state-of-the-art green hospital in India, as well as outreach programs in Ghana and the Dominican Republic.

“Close your eyes for a moment. Now imagine never being able to open them to the vibrant colours of life, a loved one’s smile, or the pages of a favourite story,” said Dr. Rachana Shukla, who coordinated the efforts leading up to the fundraiser in India. “For millions of premature babies, this is their reality. Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a silent thief of sight, making it one of the leading causes of childhood blindness. Your kindness today can save a child’s sight, their future, and their dreams.”

“Childhood blindness is a solvable problem, but it requires our collective action,” said Dr. Surendra Sharma, a key organizer of the gala. “Together, we can ensure that every child has access to quality eye care and a chance to reach their full potential.” He along with Dr. Shukla offered ongoing collaboration and support to the Eye Foundation and its efforts to eradicate childhood blindness.

Dr. Leela Raju, in her address, stressed the importance of ensuring that more people know about the causes and the means to reduce childhood blindness and work towards eradicating it. Dr. Leela Raju stated that the discussions today focused on “not just glaucoma, but cornea and pediatric ophthalmology. And of course, regarding retinopathy and prematurity, which is our real push in both in India and around the world to reduce the burden of childhood blindness.”

Prof. Indrajit S Saluja spoke appreciably about the services being rendered by the Eye Foundation of America and appealed to the gathering to support financially the Foundation to achieve its laudable objective of having a world without childhood blindness.

“I was born in a rural village in India, poor and legally blind, with no opportunity to exist,” Sam Maddula, Pharm.D., a distinguished leader, visionary entrepreneur, and dedicated philanthropist, said. Sam went on to add, how his life turned from darkness to light as his parents stumbled upon an Eye Camp that the Eye Foundation of America had set up in 1987 in rural Andhra Pradesh. “It is this organization that rescued me from a life of darkness. The Eye Foundation of America helped me get a visa to the United States. The esteemed Dr. VK Raju himself, performed dual corneal transplant surgery on me two weeks after my second birthday in the United States. He did it, working with the Eye Foundation for free. He cured me just like that, with the magic of his hands. I could see my life went from literal darkness to pure sunlight.”

Dr. VK Raju honoring Prof. Indrajit S Saluja

Sam shared his life story virtually with the audience during the Gala. This life-changing miracle is one of the millions of Eye Surgeries that The Eye Foundation of America, led by the legendary Dr. VK Raju has done in the past half a century, transforming the lives of millions of children, who are born every year with vision impairment.

Dr. Sanku Rao, a Board member of the Eye Foundation; Dr. Indrajit Saluja, Publisher and Chief Editor of The Indian Panorama; Parveen Chopra, Publisher and Chief Editor of A Lotus in the Mud were others who felicitated the Eye Foundation and the organizers of the event for their tireless efforts to eradicate childhood blindness.

The Gala and Fundraising Event, attended by several community and business leaders, who joined the mission to help eliminate childhood blindness, included, entertainment, silent auction, raffles, fundraising, and a delicious cocktail dinner at the beautiful Surf Club on The Sound in New Rochelle, New York.

Mrs. Sanku Rao, whose husband Mr. Sanku Rao, is a director of the Eye Foundation of Americas described her long association with the Eye Foundation of America. L to R: Dr. VK Raju, Mrs Rao, Dr. Sanku Rao, Dr. Surendra Sharma and Dr. Rachna Shukla were,

The Eye Foundation of America (EFA) was started in 1977 by Dr. VK Raju in the hope of improving accessibility and affordability in eye care in and around his hometown in southern India. Since then, EFA has grown and collaborated with doctors and non-profit organizations in over 30 countries.

For the past four decades, Dr. Raju and the EFA have been actively and tirelessly on a crusade to eliminate avoidable blindness in areas plagued by poverty and poor access to medical care. The EFA’s mission is to eliminate avoidable blindness under the guiding principles of service, teaching, and research.

This noble mission is accomplished through eye camps and brick-and-mortar hospitals in developing countries, training of medical personnel to serve the needy, and educating the population at large on preventative eye care and healthy lifestyle choices. With adequate education, patients are empowered to take charge of their lives and their own health and prevent further deleterious consequences of their poor lifestyle choices, while sharing this knowledge with their friends and families.

Through the efforts of the Eye Foundation, the public is educated on eye care and injury prevention, and local teachers are taught how to screen for early eye problems in children. Patients, their families, and the greater community benefit from preventative medical care, free procedures, and access to education.

The EFA has served approximately 2.5 million patients and performed 340,000+ vision-saving surgeries, with 30,000+ surgeries performed on children alone. His over 40 years of noble work has helped restore vision to millions in India and abroad.

With all of Dr. Raju’s momentous achievements, he has also ensured that his life’s work and vision are self-sustaining. The Goutami Institute, which has been honoured as the Best Eye Hospital in the state of Andhra Pradesh by the state Government continues to add new buildings, more staff and equipment, and mobile clinics to meet the growing demand for treatment for children and adults.

Dr. VK Raju honored the hosts of the fundraiser, Dr. Surendra Sharma and Dr. Rachna Shukla for their support to the Eye Foundation. The couple had earlier also organized a successful fundraiser.

“I feel so incredibly thankful for my personal and professional gifts, and I make great efforts to share those gifts with those in need of my services,” says Dr. Raju. “I am ever grateful to India for giving me stellar medical education for almost free. The work of EFA and the Goutami Eye institute wouldn’t be possible without the support of our Board Members, who go beyond to enhance and help realize our mission to make the world free of blindness.”

Dr. Raju says, childhood blindness has far-reaching consequences. 75% of blind children never attend school. Blindness reduces employability by 50%. Blindness increases poverty and social isolation. Urging everyone to be part of this noble mission, Dr. Raju says, “Together, Let Us Illuminate Young Lives and Create a World Without Childhood Blindness. Your Support Can: Change Lives, Restore Vision, And Empower Futures. Now, Let’s All Join the Movement; Be Part of Something Extraordinary.”

  • Consul General Mr. Pradhan celebrates The Indian Panorama Holi/Hola with the Indian community and dignitaries

Consul General Mr. Pradhan celebrates The Indian Panorama Holi/Hola with the Indian community and dignitaries

    • By Parveen Chopra

JERICHO, NY (TIP): India’s Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, along with his wife Mrs. Monalisa Shuvadarshini, New York Assemblyman Edward Braunstein, and Town Clerk, Town of North Hempstead Ragini Srivastava, joined the Indian community at the celebration of festival of colors, Holi, and the festival of valor, Hola hosted by The Indian Panorama at the Cotillion Banquet on Long Island on April 5.

Guests were greeted with a dab of dry gulal on the cheeks and offered the traditional cardamom and crystal sugar.

Now in its 6th year hosting the event, The Indian Panorama combines the celebration of Hola Mohalla, which has significance in Sikh history, with Holi. The highlight of this year’s performances was a thrilling display of the Sikh martial art called Gatka by Sardar Daler Singh’s Gatka academy students.

Amb Pradhan and Mrs. Shuvadarshini (the latter attended the celebration for the first time) were enthralled by the 15-minute performance as young kids wielded swords and other weapons as if on the battlefield.

In his address, Ambassador Pradhan thanked The Indian Panorama and its Editor-Publisher, Prof Indrajit Singh Saluja, for continuing with their tradition of organizing the Holi/Hola and Vaisakhi events, the latter scheduled for April 11 at the Consulate.
Ambassador told the Indian community to beware of unscrupulous visa/passport agencies and scammers. He said the consulate was sensitive to the community’s expectations and needs of efficient consular services, and keeping this in view, the Consulate was now providing emergency services even on weekends and holidays which means 365 days of the year.

Amb. Pradhan and Mrs Shuvadarshini were greeted with bouquets and honored with shawls by Prof Saluja and the Holi/Hola Organizing Committee. Mrs. Shuvadarshini said she was happy to attend the colorful celebration and kindly handed over the certificates of attendance to all performers. Also representing the Indian Consulate were Vishal Jayeshbhai Harsh, Deputy Consul General, and Sewang Gyalson, Consul.

New York State Assemblyman Edward Braunstein graced the event, spoke briefly and presented Amb. Pradhan a citation from the assembly. He, in turn, was honored with a shawl by the Consul General.

Town of North Hempstead Clerk Ragini Srivastava also addressed the gathering, talking about her long association and support of the Indian community. She said it was a pleasure for her to participate in the Holi / Hola celebrations organized by The Indian Panorama, and that she did not miss any in the past. She was honored with a shawl.

Prof Saluja, in his introductory remarks, said that The Indian Panorama’s Holi & Hola celebrations began in 2018, inspired by then Consul General Mr. Sandeep Chakravorty, to unite the Indian American community in celebrating the Festival of Colors and Love, and the Festival of Valor. What started as a modest event with a gathering of a hundred crème de la crème of the Indian Diaspora quickly evolved into a grand annual tradition, enriched with Gatka displays, vibrant singing and dancing performances, and comic relief.

This year, for the first time, the program started with ‘Sarva Dharma Prayers’ led by Purnima Desai, founder of Shikshayatan Cultural Center, and Harcharan Singh Gulati, of Gurdwara Nanak Darbar in Hicksville. They were joined on the stage by Narinder Kapoor and Gurdip Singh Narula, who talked about the origins of Hola Mohalla festival.

A much-anticipated performance was by Sanjib Bhattacharya, an accomplished Manipuri dancer and recipient of two President’s awards in India. He did not disappoint as he was joined by his elaborately dressed troupe members including Jagannath Lairenjam, Jolly Moni Debi and Chaobi Thoi Leiranjam Debi.

A Holi dance performance by a group led by choreographer and dancer Jyotika Patel was appreciated by all. Her troupe included Anuradha Kumar, Brinda Soneiji, Shilpa Jayshil Patel, Sujini Govindrajan, and Vijaya Nyayapathi.

Towards the end, Ashok Arora, a lawyer in India’s Supreme Court, earned the ‘royal’ crown as Mahamoorkh (The Biggest Fool). Arora sportingly cherished the new title and recited a couple of Urdu couplets about love and even sang a song, entertaining the crowd. Earlier winners of the dubious title have been Tirlok Malik, Ravi Batra, Elango Balasubramaniam and H.P. Singh.

Dr. Bindeshwari Aggarwal provided comic relief with her humorous poems. Then, Surya Makkar played on Dhol, and sister Prachi crooned boliyan and tappe, making ladies dance with abandon.

Host and MC Prof. Indrajit S Saluja says thank you and goodbye until the next Holi/Hola.

The Indian Panorama publisher and editor Prof. Saluja, who emceed the program, thanked the dignitaries, community leaders and guests for their gracious presence. He also thanked members of his organizing committee – Jyoti Gupta (coordinator), Shashi Malik, Dr. Jag Kalra, Abha Bhatnagar, Anju & Sanju Sharma, Amita Karwal, Gunjan Rastogi, Beena Kothari, Bina Sabapathy, Jaskiran Saluja and Parveen Chopra. Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA) Celebrates 75th Rajasthan Diwas & 25th Holi Sneh Milan with a Grand Cruise Event

NEW YORK (TIP): The Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA) New York, one of the most influential and largest organizations representing Rajasthanis outside Rajasthan, hosted a spectacular celebration marking the 75th Rajasthan Diwas and the 25th Holi Sneh Milan. The grand event took place aboard a cruise and was attended by over 400 distinguished guests, making it a truly memorable occasion.

Call for Recognition of the Rajasthani Language

On this significant occasion, RANA President Prem Bhandari voiced his strong displeasure over the continued injustice faced by over 100 million people due to the non-recognition of the Rajasthani language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. He expressed deep disappointment that despite a unanimous resolution passed by the Rajasthan State Assembly on August 25, 2003, urging its inclusion, the central government has yet to take action.

Bhandari recalled that this resolution was a direct outcome of RANA’s first International Convention, during which a memorandum advocating for Rajasthani’s recognition was submitted to the then Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. However, even after decades, this demand remains unfulfilled due to a lack of political will.

Farewell Ceremony for Dr. Varun Jeph

Dr. Varun Jeph being received on the cruise

A farewell ceremony was also organized in honor of Dr. Varun Jeph, the outgoing Deputy Consul General of India, who has been the longest-serving DCG, completing over 3 years and 8 months in office.

Former RANA Presidents—K.K. Mehta, Anand Nahar, Haridas Kotawala, Dr. Narender Hadpawat, and Dashrath Dugara—presented floral tributes to Dr. Jeph, acknowledging his dedicated service to the Indian diaspora.

Dr. Varun Jeph in his address to the gathering recalled his pleasant experiences with the Indian American community. Standing with him is RANA President Prem Bhandari.

Prominent diaspora leader Prem Bhandari shared his experiences of working with Dr. Jeph, praising his round-the-clock availability and unwavering commitment to assisting the Indian community across the 10 states under the jurisdiction of the Indian Consulate in New York. Bhandari commended him for being approachable, accessible, and always willing to help.

Welcome to New Deputy Consul General Vishal Harsh

The event also welcomed the new Deputy Consul General, Vishal Harsh, and was attended by Indian Foreign Service officers Surender Adhana and Eldos Mathew Punnoose. Many Indian-Americans of Rajasthani origin from the tri-state area actively participated in the celebrations, further strengthening the community’s ties.

    Cultural Highlights & Community Engagement

    Celebration time

The evening was filled with cultural vibrancy, as renowned poet Abhinav Shukla mesmerized the audience with his soulful poetry. Adding to the festive spirit, guests participated in the traditional Holi celebration with flower petals, making the event truly special.

    Celebration time

Dr. Sharad Kothari, Vice President of RANA, and Neelam Modi, Treasurer of RANA, warmly welcomed the guests. They extended heartfelt gratitude to the Executive Committee and Board Members, emphasizing that the event’s remarkable success would not have been possible without their active participation and unwavering support.

The celebration was a testament to RANA’s commitment to preserving and promoting Rajasthani culture and heritage while addressing important community issues at an international level.
