MIAMI, FL (TIP): US President Donald Trump has termed New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s victory speech on election night a “very angry” address, saying he is off to a bad start and doesn’t have a chance of succeeding if he is not respectful of Washington.
“Yeah, I thought it was a very angry speech, certainly angry toward me, and I think he should be very nice to me. You know, I’m the one that sort of has to approve a lot of things coming to him. So he’s off to a bad start,” Trump said in an interview to Fox News in Miami on Wednesday, November 5, when asked about Mamdani’s victory speech.
In his fiery address, Mamdani challenged Trump and heralded the toppling of “political dynasty”.
Amid Trump’s crackdown on immigration, Mamdani said New York will be powered by immigrants and after his historic victory, it will be “led by an immigrant”.
“After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power,” Mamdani said to thunderous applause.
“This is not only how we stop Trump; it’s how we stop the next one. So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.
“We will hold bad landlords to account because the Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants. We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks.
“We will stand alongside unions and expand labor protection because we know, just as Donald Trump does, that when working people have ironclad rights, the bosses who seek to extort them become very small indeed.
“New York will remain a city of immigrants: a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” Mamdani said. “So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us,” he added.
When asked how he would respond to Mamdani’s tirade against him, Trump said it is a “very dangerous statement for him to make actually”.
“And you know, you talk about danger, I think it’s a very dangerous statement for him to make. He has to be a little bit respectful of Washington, because if he’s not, he doesn’t have a chance of succeeding,” the president said.
Trump added that he doesn’t want to make Mamdani succeed but “I want to make the city succeed, and we’ll see what happens”. When asked if he would reach out to him, Trump said that Mamdani “should reach out to us really”.
“I think he should reach out. I’m here. We’ll see what happens. But I would think that it would be more appropriate for him to reach out to us.”
Trump added that he is “so torn, because I would like to see the new mayor do well, because I love New York. I really love New York”.
Trump, who calls Mamdani a “communist”, said that for thousands of years, communism has not worked. “Communism or the concept of communism has not worked. I tend to doubt it’s going to work this time,” he said.

NEW YORK (TIP): New York City Mayor Eric Adams, on January 26, outlined a “Working People’s Agenda” in his second State of the City address, delivered at the Queens Theatre in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
Mayor Adams’ agenda is built on four pillars that are essential to building a city that meets the needs of working New Yorkers and represent the focus of his administration’s work in 2023: jobs, safety, housing, and care.
“Without a strong working class, this city cannot survive. That’s why, today, I’ve outlined how we plan to build a city for working people, one that is more affordable, safer, cleaner, and more livable,” said Mayor Adams. “You need good jobs and pathways to get those jobs, and those jobs need to be able to support a home for you and a family. You need to be safer, and you need care – not just in crisis but throughout your lives. These are the things that our administration is working for every day to sustain the workers who make this city possible and build a better city for all.”
When he took office a year ago, Mayor Eric Adams vowed to make New York safe again. Gun violence is down, but other crimes are proving challenging.
There are few things Adams is more passionate about than public safety, but public criticism of cops taking pictures of people for a social media post provoked an unscripted moment of passion.
“Let’s stop starting off hating each other and start embracing each other. This is what we want to do,” Adams said.
The mayor was defending cops against public criticism of their decision to take pictures of people leaving a Drake concert at the Apollo to post on social media, angry that an effort at community involvement was misconstrued.
It was a moment of passion as he talked about new public safety initiatives for year two of his administration, including:
An expanded focus on preventing shoplifting,
More violence prevention programs,
A most wanted list of the 1,700 criminals responsible for a disproportionate amount of violent crime,
A push in Albany for criminal justice reforms,
And more neighborhood safety teams to get guns off the street.
“We’re going to use proven methods and intensive community support to keep gun culture from taking root and taking over,” Adams said.
The mayor also vowed to end traffic violence, saying, “2023 is the year we are going to tighten the screws on reckless drivers, holding them accountable for their actions before they harm others.”
The mayor said he would go to Albany to seek a package of six bills called R.O.A.D.S.: Removing Offenders and Aggressive Drivers from our Streets.
It would:
Increase penalties for serious crashes, running red lights and impaired driving;
Ensure swift penalties for those who drive with suspended or revoked licenses;
And revoking the privileges of driving on city streets and suspending the registration of cars that get five or more red light camera violations in a 12-month period.
“We must treat traffic violence the same way we treat other dangerous crimes,” Adams said.
There will also be more tow trucks to ticket and tow abandoned and illegal parked cars, and a new focus on Vision Zero.
“New Yorkers should not have to fear for their lives every time they cross the street or bike to work,” Adams said.
The mayor is also going to create a new city position called “Director of the Public Realm” to create more open spaces in the city. It’s unknown what the salary for that position is, but the new rat czar will get $170,000 a year.

NEW YORK (TIP): Mayor Bill de Blasio announced April 22, Earth Day, that the City of New York will resume its world-leading Curbside Composting Program, which had been put on hold due to the budgetary impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This new iteration of the program will be available to the 3.5 million New Yorkers who previously had curbside collection service, with buildings and residents able to voluntarily opt-in to receive free weekly curbside composting service. Enrollment will launch in August, with collection services set to begin in October and expand as more buildings opt in. Significant expansions of community composting, reuse, and hazardous waste disposal programs are included in the announcement as well.
“Today is Earth Day, but New York City’s commitment to sustainability is year-round,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “No other municipality ran a compost program like ours, and this new citywide program will advance the cause of environmental justice in all five boroughs.”
“When people think about the work of the Department of Sanitation, all too often they think it’s our job just to make trash disappear. But we are a sustainability organization – one of the largest municipal resource recovery operations in the world,” said Edward Grayson, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Sanitation. “I want to thank Mayor de Blasio for his commitment to this mission, and I’m excited to see brown bins back on the streets.”
“Our students are the future leaders of New York City, and initiatives like our school composting program will empower them with the knowledge and resources to care for our environment,” said Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter. “We are thrilled for the return of curbside composting at our schools, and we’re grateful for our partners at DSNY for their continued commitment to educating our students on the importance of reducing waste and protecting our planet.”
“Huzzah, the brown bins are back!” said Ben Furnas, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Sustainability. “Reducing emissions from our waste stream and making important actions like composting more accessible are key to the fight against climate change. Congratulations to the Department of Sanitation on the return of these nation-leading programs.”To allow the City to continue to devote resources to essential safety, health, shelter and food security needs, the City made a number of tough budget cuts in the spring of 2020, including those that affected the curbside composting program. Today’s announcement means curbside composting and seasonal leaf collections are being restored nearly a year ahead of schedule. In addition to the re-launch of voluntary curbside composting, the popular Food Scrap Drop-Off program will be significantly expanded, from over 100 community-based sites at present to more than 200 this fall. From September 2020 through February 2021, many food scrap drop-offs have broken participation records and have collected and diverted 1,300,000 pounds of material. Residents can find their closest site at nyc.gov/dropfoodscraps. Growth of this program will be achieved via a restoration of GrowNYC’s Greenmarket Composting program funding and an expansion of NYC Compost Project funding to support community-based drop-offs, composting and education. In addition, it will include a first-of-its-kind pilot of “smart bins,” in which New Yorkers use an app to access public food scrap drop-off bins, thus preventing cross-contamination and misuse. As part of this Earth Day announcement, School Curbside Composting service will also return in the 2021-2022 school year, and nearly 1,000 schools that had service prior to COVID-19 will resume curbside composting. Beyond composting, today’s announcement includes expansions or restorations of several other sustainability programs. SAFE Disposal Events, which collect Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, and Electronics products as well as other regulated waste, will expand from two per borough each year – a total of 10 – to nearly 60 per year, one for each community district. This six-fold expansion means fewer dangerous chemicals and products on our streets, in our waterways, or in landfills. Special Waste Drop-off locations, sites around the city where residents can drop off harmful materials that do not belong in household trash, will also be re-opening starting this July. These sites have been closed since March 2020.
Finally, DSNY will begin offering Reuse Swap Events across the city to keep usable items out of landfills and help them find good homes. At these events, one person’s unwanted household goods can become another’s treasure. Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer said “Composting was picking up steam before the pandemic and I am so pleased that it is now restored. It is a key component of our city’s recycling initiatives. Curbside organics collection for residential buildings and schools, along with drop-off food scrap locations, make this environmentally sound practice easier for all to do.”
“With climate change already taking a toll on our city in terms of severe storms like Sandy, it is imperative that we leave no stone unturned in our fight to make New York City the greenest city in America — ensuring the long-term sustainability of our communities in the process,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. “The restoration and expansion of these programs are part of a greater puzzle we must solve to secure the safety of our families, and Queens is grateful to all involved for their commitment.”
“I congratulate Mayor de Blasio and his terrific environmental and sustainability team for re-starting the best-in-the-nation curbside composting program and for the major expansions being made to the community composting, reuse, and hazardous waste disposal programs. For this Mayor to make this kind of bold commitment as the City is still emerging from COVID really speaks to the remarkable commitment to environmental leadership that Bill de Blasio has always shown throughout his career. This is a great day for NYC’s environment — thank you, Mr. Mayor!,” said Council Member James Gennaro.
“I am thrilled to hear that curb side compost back!” said Council Member Brad Lander. “On Earth Day this is an important step for the City that will reduce the waste that sits rotting in our landfills and reducing as greenhouse gas emissions.”
“Sustainability is at the core of who we are as New Yorkers committed to reducing our environmental and ecological footprints. With the continuation of composting and SAFE Disposal events, we are preserving the health and wellness of our communities by minimizing the amount of waste in our landfills and air pollution. The future of our planet depends on neighbors who compost, conserve, reuse, and recycle. I look forward to seeing our blocks lined with not only beautiful trees but brown bins working in tandem to protect our environment for future generations,” said Council Member Farah N. Louis. “The restoration of curbside composting and the expansion of SAFE disposal events is a welcome development as we celebrate Earth Day today. Many local residents have been eagerly looking forward to composting service resuming, and we are grateful that service will be restored ahead of schedule. We are also looking forward to holding a SAFE disposal site in our district again this summer and greatly appreciate the partnership with DSNY,” said Council Member I. Daneek Miller. “On Earth Day, we recognize how important it is to preserve our planet. Today, we are upholding a commitment to a city that’s greener and more sustainable every day. As we begin to recover from this pandemic, we have to prioritize the future of our city and the health of our earth. This is a good step. Thank you to the Mayor and Commissioner Grayson for the dedication to restore these programs,” said Council Member Keith Powers.
“Composting is a vital part of green infrastructure that diverts waste from landfills, promotes environmental justice, and brings communities into our efforts to advance a green agenda locally. The return and expansion of these essential initiatives is going to create a healthier New York City, and I look forward on engaging with my constituents on ways they can take part as these programs are implemented and grow,” said Council Member Carlina Rivera.
NEW YORK (TIP): Actor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas has announced that she is opening an Indian cuisine restaurant in New York. Chopra Jonas took to Instagram late Saturday evening and shared a picture of the restaurant named ‘Sona’, which will be opening doors for food enthusiasts later this month.
She also posted images from the prayer ceremony (pooja) held in 2019, to mark the beginning of the construction, where her popstar husband Nick Jonas was also present. “I’m thrilled to present to you Sona, a new restaurant in NYC that I poured my love for Indian food into. Sona is the very embodiment of timeless India and the flavors I grew up with,” the 38-year-old actor, who is shooting for the Amazon series “Citadel” in the UK, wrote.
Chopra Jonas said chef Hari Nayak will helm the kitchen and also thanked her partners, restaurateur Maneesh Goyal and David Rabin.
“Sona is opening later this month, and I can’t wait to see you there! This endeavor would not have been possible without the leadership of my friends Maneesh Goyal and David Rabin. Thank you to our designer Melissa Bowers and the rest of the team for realizing this vision so clearly,” she said.
Goyal credited Chopra Jonas for being the “creative force” behind the restaurant.
In an Instagram post, the restaurateur said opening a restaurant is a team effort and it wouldn’t have happened without the support of the actor.
“My kind friend @priyankachopra, who has been the creative force behind Sona. There is no one who better-and more boldly-personifies ‘global Indian’ than Priyanka. Sona is so lucky to have her in our corner.
“From the design, to the menu, to the music, to even the name, Priyanka has her fingerprints all over Sona. Love you dear Pri! Our baby is finally ready for the world to see!” he wrote.
Chopra Jonas was recently seen in the Netflix film “The White Tiger” and also released her much-awaited memoir “Unfinished”.
