Dharamsala (TIP)- Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar conjured up superlative fifties before the bowlers joined the party as Royal Challengers Bengaluru kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a huge 60-run win over Punjab Kings in the IPL here on May 9.
Kohli’s 47-ball 92 was the cornerstone of RCB’s innings as he starred in two partnerships — 72 off 32 balls with Patidar (55 off 23 balls) and 92 off 46 balls with Cameron Green (46 off 27 balls) to propel RCB to 241/7.
In reply, Rilee Rossouw put up a show with a 27-ball 61-run knock but Karn Sharma’s twin strike triggered a collapse as PBKS were all out for 181 in 17 overs.
This was a fourth successive win for RCB and it took them to 10 points, while PBKS (8) were knocked out of the playoff race as they can reach a maximum of 12 points from the remaining two games.
Swapnil Singh (2/28), Karn (2/36) and Lockie Ferguson (2/29) took two each, while Mohammed Siraj (3/43) claimed three wickets for RCB.
Chasing a stiff target, PBKS lost Prabhsimr an Singh (6) early but Rossouw looked unstoppable as left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh was carted for two fours before Siraj was belted for three fours and a six.
Yash Dayal and Ferguson were then hit for 16 and 14 runs by Jonny Bairstow (27) and Rossouw as PBKS scored 75 runs in six overs.
Once Bairstow was removed by Ferguson, Rossouw turned his attention on Green, blasting two fours and a six on way to his fifty off 21 balls.
Jitesh Sharma was then cleaned up by Karn, while Swapnil got rid of Liam Livingstone (0) as Punjab slipped to 126 for 5 in 12th over.
They couldn’t recover from those blows and it was all over when Shashank Singh (37), Sam Curran (22) and Ashutosh Sharma (8) returned to the dugout.
Earlier, Kohli, who was dropped on 0 and 10, timed the ball nicely, used his feet and wrists to bring up his sixth IPL fifty this season. He reached his mark in 32 balls, before slamming another 40 in his next 15 balls. He cracked seven fours and six maximums.
Patidar, who was also given two lives, provided the early momentum as he slammed six maximums and three fours during his 23-ball 55.
After Patidar’s dismissal, Kohli and Green continued the onslaught to take RCB past the 200-mark. Green hit five fours and a six before being caught in the final ball as RCB scored 77 in last five overs. Source: PTI

IPL 17 : Shashank leads PBKS to second-highest successful chase against Gujarat Titans
Ahmedabad (TIP)- Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill’s unbeaten half-century was overshadowed by uncapped Shashank Singh’s fiery knock as Punjab Kings registered a thrilling three-wicket win in an IPL match here on April 4. Gill made 89 off 48 balls, the highest individual score this season, and in the process hit six fours and four sixes to guide GT to an imposing 199/4. He was also helped by B Sai Sudharsan’s 19-ball 33 and Rahul Tewatia’s eight-ball unbeaten 23.
But there was a heartbreak in store for GT as Shashank played the knock of his life, remaining unbeaten on 61 off 29 balls during which he hit six boundaries and four sixes to guide PBKS home with a ball to spare.
“Yet to sink in. Visualised all these things, but when it turned into reality… proud of the effort,” said Shashank, who was named the Player of the Match.
He was ably supported by Ashutosh Sharma (31 off 17) as the duo shared 43 runs off just 22 balls to raise PBKS’ hopes, which eventually came true. Chasing a big total, PBKS suffered an early jolt in the form of captain Shikhar Dhawan, who played an Umesh Yadav delivery onto the stumps while going for a shot through the cover region. Jonny Bairstow (22 off 13) was then cleaned up by Afghanistan left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad. PBKS kept on losing wickets at regular intervals as the next to follow was Prabhsimran Singh (35 off 24), caught by Mohit Sharma at short third-man, as the batter went for a heave against a tossed-up delivery from Ahmad only to get a top edge as PBKS slid to 64/3 by the end of the eighth over. Sikandar Raza was dropped twice in Umesh Yadav’s 11th over, albeit both were difficult chances.
But it was Shashank who capitalised on the lives, clobbering Umesh for two fours and a six to pick up 17 runs in the 11th over. He kept on using his long handle, picking up a few boundaries and sixes to keep PBKS in the hunt and brought up his 50 off just 25 balls.
Brief Scores: GT: 199/4 in 20 overs (Gill 89, Sudharsan 33 Williamson 26; Rabada 2/44); Punjab Kings: 200/7 in 19.5 overs (Shashank 61*, Prabhsimran 35, Ashutosh 31; Ahmad 2/32).

Harpreet shines as PBKS use surprise weapon to tame RCB
Ahmedabad (TIP): Punjab Kings registered their third win of the season, and the third in a row against Royal Challengers Bangalore, after managing to pull themselves out of a few tricky situations and eventually defend a target of 179 quite comfortably. All because of a magical spell from the 25-year old left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar who was brought in for this game. Harpreet accounted for the wickets of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers in a spell for the ages. After a rather sedate start, Kohli was itching to get after the spinner and was bowled after missing a slider while coming down the track. Maxwell was left dumbfounded by a classic left-arm spinner’s delivery that turned and beat him comprehensively before clipping the off stump. And while de Villiers averted the hat-trick, he was out in the next over caught at cover while trying to go inside out. And just like that RCB had slipped from 62/1 to 69/4 in the space of 12 balls.
What else did Punjab do right?
They did well to keep a check RCB’s top order in the chase. While Devdutt Padikkal fell early trying force the pace against Riley Meredith, RCB went into a period of lull after that. Both Kohli and Rajat Patidar struggled to up the ante, with the latter trudging along to a 30-ball 31 and robbing the innings of all momentum. Punjab’s spinners Ravi Bishnoi (2/17) and Harpreet ensured later that there was no opportunity for a comeback.
Did Punjab have a similarly smooth sailing with the bat?
Not at all. In fact, Punjab Kings had suffered an even bigger collapse in the middle overs. From 99/1, they slid down to 118/5 in the space of 24 balls with Gayle falling to a short one from Daniel Sams, Pooran (falling for a fourth duck in the season), Deepak Hooda (caught on the longer boundary) and Shahrukh Khan (bowled by a Chahal googly) departing in quick succession that threatened to undo all the good work done at the top.
What good work?
The partnership of 80 that came off just 44 balls between KL Rahul and a rampaging Chris Gayle (46 off 24). The left-hander targeted the shorter straight boundaries and pulled it off with aplomb regularly. Rahul, played a good second fiddle to him before managing to step on the pedal for a brief period as well during the stand. And together they threatened to hit RCB out of the contest before that collapse.
