  • India Day Parade organized by the Federation of Indian Associations NYNJCT (FIA) over the Years in Pics by Jay Mandal

    Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) came into being in 1977 after changing the name of umbrella organization “Joint Committee of Indian Organizations” founded in 1975, under the leadership of Rajan Ghosh. The main goal of this organization was to celebrate India’s Independence and Republic days in Tristate area by bringing under one roof Indian students organizations: India Club of New York University, India Club of Columbia University and Association of Indians in America, The Bharathi Society of America and the Tagore Society of America.

    The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Founder, Thomas Abraham, a Christian from Kerala, was elected First President of FIA in 1977. The India Day Parade has since been an annual feature.

    A notable addition to the annual parade was made in 1983 to have a film star as Parade’s Grand Marshal. Bollywood actor- Sunil Dutt- was the first to be invited as the Grand Marshal of the Parade, and from then on it became a tradition to have a Bollywood actor as Parade’s Grand Marshal.     Also included here are some photographs from Independence Day celebration at the Indian Consulate in New York in 2016. It was the 1st time that in 2016 the Independence Day of India was celebrated in the street outside the Indian Consulate in New York. Then Deputy Consul General and presently India’s Ambassador to Guatemala, Manoj Mahapatra was instrumental to get the city’s permission, and the Indian Tricolor was hoisted by then MOS MJ Akbar on 64th Street, between 5th Ave and Madison Ave.
    Included here are also a few pictures of Independence Day celebration at the Permanent Mission of India in 2018.

    Kapil Verma Returns to HAB Bank

    Kapil Verma, who had chosen to leave his job with HAB Bank, has made a comeback, after almost a year. The branch manager Moazzam Ali said Kapil is much loved by the patrons of the bank and is an asset. The Indian Panorama publisher Prof. Indrajit S Saluja welcomed the return of Kapil Verma to the HAB Branch in Hicksville and hoped his presence will make the branch attractive to customers.

    Gurajpal Singh Padda Marries Gurleen Kaur Hothi

    Gurajpal Singh Padda, son of Sardar Charanjit Singh Padda and Sardarni Rajinder Kaur Padda, and Gurleen Kaur Hothi, daughter of Sardar Gurinder Singh Hothi and Sardarni Gurpreet Kaur Hothi, were married according to the Sikh tradition at Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society, Richmond Hill, New York on July 21.
    Present on the occasion were a large number of friends and relatives, and community leaders. Hockey Olympian and former Punjab Minister Pargat Singh also graced the occasion.

    PM Narendra Modi’s visit to US in pictures

    India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived on his first State visit to US from June 21 to June 23 at the invitation of US President Joe Biden and the First Lady Jill Biden. He arrived in New York on the first leg of his visit on June 20, 2023. The same day he met with Nobel Laureates, CEO’s , Think Tank leaders and politicians.
    On June 21, Modi participated in the International Day of Yoga celebrations at the United Nations where 175 nations were represented, and this being the largest gathering of diplomats at any event, it created a Guinness Book record.
    On June 21, PM Modi had private dinner with Bidens at the White House.

    On June 22 afternoon , PM Modi addressed the joint meeting of Congress. In the evening, Modi attended the State dinner in his honor at which about 400 guests were present. They included Mukesh Ambani, Sundar Pichai and many other CEO’s, eminent personalities from all walks of life, besides lawmakers and politicians.

    On June 23 morning, PM Modi had a meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris and other leaders .
    In the evening PM Modi attended Diaspora events at Kennedy House and Regan Center.
    He was to depart for Egypt on June 24 morning.

    Prime Minister Modi met with Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla , and Senator Chuck Schumer , Senate Majority Leader, among others on June 20.

    Prime Minister Modi attended the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations on June 21 morning. The event was attended by diplomats from 175 nations, and the event got recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. President of the United Nations General Assembly Csaba Kőrösi was among those present.

    Prime Minister Modi arrived in Washington D.C. on June 21 afternoon to a warm welcome by Indian Americans , and by President Biden and the First Lady Jill Biden. Modi had a private dinner with the Bidens at the White House in the evening.

    The next day, June 22 , US President Biden and India’s Prime Minister Modi had talks followed by a press conference.

    Jaipur Foot and Association of Indians in New York celebrated Diwali at Times Square with a display of their organizations and lighting on NASDAQ Tower.

    Queens District Attorney hosted a Diwali Celebration at Richie Rich Palace in Richmond Hill. Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar was also present.
