Farm laws on hold: Panel composition thwarts forward movement

By putting on hold the implementation of the three controversial farm laws until further orders, the Supreme Court has said it is trying to solve the problem in the best way. There is little room to disagree, considering the deadlock and unlikelihood of any forward movement in the talks between the Centre and the protesting farmers. The unions’ immediate reaction not to back down from their demand of the repeal of laws is not surprising. A month-and-a-half of a peaceful, organized protest in extreme conditions, riding on popular sentiment and support, lends strength to the conviction of purpose. But opting for a point of no return and a prolonged holdout — by the government and the protesters — cannot be seen as a prudent stand. As Chief Justice Bobde observed, ‘These are matters of life and death. We are concerned with laws. We are concerned with lives and property of people affected by the agitation.’

The court’s intervention lends an opportunity to come out with possible solutions which both sides can agree not to disagree on, but questions are bound to be raised over the composition of the committee if the perception is that all the four members support the new laws. Only a suitable mix would make the discussions meaningful and lend weight to it being a forum for a frank and open discussion. If the opposition is to the manner and intent of the reform proposed and not the idea of reform itself, there is merit in bringing forth articulate, informed depositions on the pros and cons, the apprehensions, the distrust. Much of the onus lies on the government. It has to show its willingness to new proposals and assurances that the farmers cannot do without. Keeping in view the proposed protest march in the Capital on Republic Day, a notice has been issued to the unions on a Delhi Police plea to stop their tractor rally during the January 26 parade. The fervent hope is that the need for such a protest does not arise.

  • Pongal: The harvest festival of South India

Pongal: The harvest festival of South India

Pongal is one of the most popular harvest festivals of South India, mainly of Tamil Nadu. Pongal falls in the mid-January every year and marks the auspicious beginning of Uttarayan – sun’s journey northwards. Pongal festival lasts for four days. This four days long festival of Tamil Nadu is celebrated for showing gratitude to nature. The literal meaning of Pongal is “spilling over” and it had been named so, because of the tradition of boiling rice in a pot until it starts overflowing. Other traditions of the celebration include drawing of Kolam, swinging & cooking of delicious Pongal.
    History of Pongal
Pongal is an ancient festival of people in South India particularly Tamils. The history of the festival can be traced back to the Sangam Age i.e. 200 B.C. To 300 A.D. Although, Pongal originated as a Dravidian Harvest festival and has a mention in Sanskrit Puranas, historians identify the festival with the Thai Un and Thai Niradal which are believed to have been celebrated during the Sangam Age.
Observance of Pongal During the Sangam Era (Thai Niradal)
The celebrations of Sangam Era led to today’s Pongal celebrations. As part of the festivities, maidens of the Sangam era observed ‘Pavai Nonbu’ at the time of Thai Niradal which was a major festival during the reign of the Pallavas (4th to 8th Century AD). It was observed during the Tamil month of Margazhi (December-January).During this festival young girls prayed for rain and prosperity of the country. Throughout the month, they avoided milk and milk products. They would not oil their hair and refrained from using harsh words while speaking. Women used to bath early in the morning. They worshiped the idol of Goddess Katyayani, which would be carved out of wet sand. They ended their penance on the first day of the month of Thai (January-February). This penance was to bring abundant rains to flourish the paddy. These traditions and customs of ancient times gave rise to Pongal celebrations.
Andal’s Tiruppavai and Manickavachakar’s Tiruvembavai vividly describe the festival of Thai Niradal and the ritual of observing Pavai Nonbu. According to an inscription found in the Veeraraghava temple at Tiruvallur, the Chola King Kiluttunga used to gift lands to the temple specially for the Pongal celebrations.
    Legends of Pongal
Some legendary stories are also associated with Pongal festival celebrations. The two most popular legends of Pongal are stories related to Lord Shiva and Lord Indra.
According to a legend, once Shiva asked his bull, Basava, to go to the earth and ask the mortals to have an oil massage and bath every day and to eat once a month. Inadvertently, Basava announced that everyone should eat daily and have an oil bath once a month. This mistake enraged Shiva who then cursed Basava, banishing him to live on the earth forever. He would have to plough the fields and help people produce more food. Thus the association of this day with cattle.
Another legend of Lord Indra and Lord Krishna also led to Pongal celebrations. It is said when Lord Krishna were in his childhood, he decided to teach a lesson to Lord Indra who became arrogant after becoming the king of all deities. Lord Krishna asked all the cowherds to stop worshiping Lord Indra. This angered Lord Indra and sent forth his clouds for thunder-storms and 3 days continuous rains. Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan to save all the humans. Later, Lord Indra realized his mistake and divine power of Krishna.
    Pongal Celebrations
According to Hindu mythology, this is when the day of the gods begins, after a six-month long night. The festival is spread over three days and is the most important and most fervently-celebrated harvest festival of South India. A special puja is performed on the first day of Pongal before the cutting of the paddy. Farmers worship the sun and the earth by anointing their ploughs and sickles with sandal wood paste. It is with these consecrated tools that the newly-harvested rice is cut.
Each of the three days are marked by different festivities. The first day, Bhogi Pongal, is a day for the family. Surya Pongal, the second day, is dedicated to the worship of Surya, the Sun God. Boiled milk and jaggery is offered to the Sun God. The third day of Pongal, Mattu Pongal, is for worship of the cattle known as Mattu. Cattle are bathed, their horns polished and painted in bright colors, and garlands of flowers placed around their necks. The Pongal that has been offered to the Gods is then given to cattle and birds to eat.
    FOUR DAYS OF PONGAL
    Bogi Festival
Bogi festival or Bhogi is the first day of Pongal and is celebrated in honor of Lord Indra, “the God of Clouds and Rains”. Lord Indra is worshiped for the abundance of harvest, thereby bringing plenty and prosperity to the land. Thus, this day is also known as Indran. On Bhogi all people clean out their homes from top to bottom, and collect all unwanted goods. This day is meant for domestic activities and of being together with the family members.
All the houses from the richest to the humblest are thoroughly scrubbed and whitewashed. Homes are cleaned and decorated with “Kolam” – floor designs drawn in the white paste of newly harvested rice with outlines of red mud. Often pumpkin flowers are set into cow-dung balls and placed among the patterns. Fresh harvest of rice, turmeric and sugarcane is brought in from the field as preparation for the following day.
A special puja is performed on the first day of Pongal before the cutting of paddy. Farmers worship the sun and the earth by anointing their ploughs and sickles with sandalwood paste. It is with these consecrated tools that the newly-harvested rice is cut.
    Mattu Pongal
The third day of Pongal is dedicated to cattle and is called Mattu Pongal. People offer prayers to the bulls, cows and other farm animals. Cows and bulls have always held a special place in India. Cows give nourishing milk while bulls and oxen help plough the fields. Thus, Maatu Pongal is a day when cattle are given a well deserved day of rest and are given pride of place. Therefore the farmers honor their cattle friends by celebrating it as a day of thanks-giving to them.
On this day, Lord Ganesh and Goddess Parvati are worshiped and Pongal is offered to them in the ‘puja’.
    Surya Pongal
The second day of Pongal is known as ‘Surya Pongal’ and is dedicated to the Sun God. It is the day on which the celebration actually begins and is also the first day of the Tamil month Thai. On this day the granaries are full, the sun shines brightly, trees are in full bloom, bird-songs resound in the air and hearts overflow with happiness that get translated into colorful and joyous celebrations.
    Thiruvalluvar Day / Kanum Pongal
The fourth day of the three-day Pongal celebrations is called Kaanum Pongal. In few places this day is also known as Karinaal or Thiruvalluvar Day. It is dedicated to the sun god, Surya and has its roots in ancient Brahminical tradition. Since Pongal is a rural, agrarian based festival that celebrates the harvests, the sun is a vital part of the proceedings. This is because the Sun is the symbol of life on Earth. Without the Sun, crops cannot sprout and grow. Without the Sun, harvests will not be plentiful.

  • Maghi Mela

    Maghi Mela

Maghi is the occassion when Sikhs commemorate the sacrifice of forty Sikhs, who fought for Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh master.
Maghi, Makara Sankranti, the first day of the month of Magh. The eve of Maghi is the common Indian festival of Lohri when bonfires are lit in Hindu homes to greet the birth of sons in the families and alms are distributed. In the morning, people go out for an early-hour dip in nearby tanks.
For Sikhs, Maghi means primarily the festival at Muktsar, a district town of the Punjab, in commemoration of the heroic fight of the Chali Mukte, literally, the Forty Liberated Ones, who laid down their lives warding off an attack by an imperial army marching in pursuit of Guru Gobind Singh.
The action took place near a pool of water, Khidrane di Dhab, on 29 December 1705. The bodies were cremated the following day, the first of Magh (hence the name of the festival), which now falls usually on the 13th of January. Following the custom of the Sikhs to observe their anniversaries of happy and tragic events alike, Maghi is celebrated with end-to-end recital of the Guru Granth Sahib and religious divans in almost all gurdwaras.

  • Lohri: The Bonfire Festival

    Lohri: The Bonfire Festival

Like most other festivals in India, Lohri is also related to the agricultural activities of the farmers. It marks the harvesting season in Punjab and the end of the winter season. Lohri usually falls on the last day of the month of Paush, a day known as Makar Sankranti in most parts of the country. According to the English calendar, Lohri falls on 13th January every year.
Preparation to celebrate Lohri begins way before the actual festival day. Right through the winter days, village women and children collect dry twigs and branches to make a huge bonfire on the day of Lohri-the bigger the better.
On the day of the festival, with the setting of the sun, the bonfire is lit with people singing and dancing to the tune of Lohri songs.
The munching of seasonal goodies like popcorn, reori, peanuts and sugar cane forms an integral part of the celebration. Fistfuls of these goodies also find their way into the fire, as an offering to the Sun God, the giver of all life. Interestingly, the next day of Lohri is known as Maghi, a day that signifies the beginning of the month of Magh.
According to common belief, this is an auspicious day to take holy dip and give away charity. Kheer is prepared in sugar cane juice to mark the day.
    The First Lohri
The festival is symbolic of new beginnings. The first time Lohris are especially celebrated with pomp and grandeur. Friends and relatives gather around the fire and perform Gidda and Bhangra to the beat of Dhol, the drums of Punjab.
The first Lohri of a bride
The new bride and groom sit in a central place together as people approach them with wishes and gifts.
The parents-in-law present the bride with new clothes and jewellery.
The first Lohri of a newborn
The first Lohri of a new-born is of immense significance where the family and friends participate to bless the child with a prosperous and a healthy future.
Many conduct an elaborate get-together at the paternal home, where invitation cards are sent in advance.
Family and friends bring along gifts for the child as well as the new mother.
The maternal and paternal grandparents shower the child with gifts.
    Lohri Rituals
This festival denotes the harvesting of the Rabi crops and hence all the farmers get together in order to thank god for giving them such a wonderful harvest.
The rituals related to Lohri symbolize the attachment of the people with Mother Nature. A few days before the festival, youngsters get together in groups and go round their localities singing folk songs.
Doing this they also collect firewood and money for the bonfire that is scheduled on the night of Lohri. On the special day, offerings of phulley (popcorn), moongphali (peanuts) and rewri (a sweet delicacy made out of jaggery and sesame seed) are offered to the fire
The men and women go round the fire and bow before it in reverence. Lohri holds special importance when there is a special occasion in the family like marriage or childbirth.

    Lohri Legends
Like all Indian festivals, Lohri also has some legends and lore attached to it.
One of the many interesting legends has it that in a place that lies between Gujaranwala and Sialkot, there was a thick forest known as Rakh.
The forest was the home of Dulla Bhatti, a dacoit who was considered as the Robin Hood of Punjab.
This brave and generous man was always helpful to the needy.
During the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, a jealous Hindu spread a rumour that his niece was very beautiful and would do credit to the Muslim harem.
On hearing this, the Mughal officers wanted to carry her off forcibly. The girl’s father was extremely worried and sought the protection of Dulla Bhatti.
Dulla at once got her married to a young Hindu boy at a simple ceremony in the forest. He lit the sacred fire in keeping with the Hindu custom.
Since there was no priest to chant the holy mantras, he broke into a hilarious song composed extempore to add cheer to the occasion. This song is sung even today on the occasion.
    Religious Fact
As per the Hindu calendar, in the mid-January, the earth starts its journey towards the sun bringing end to Paush, the coldest month of the year. According to the Shrimad Bhagawad Gita, Lord Krishna manifests his full divinity during the period of Lohri. A day later, the auspicious Makara Sankranthi helds which marks the end of the winter season. Thousands of Hindus bath in the Ganges to nullify their sins.
    Social Fact
Wheat is the main winter crop in the northern parts of India. This winter (rabi) crop is sown in the months of October and harvested in March or April. Farmers and their families celebrate Lohri during January (rest period) before the cutting of crops. Thus, Punjabis and Haryanavis celebrate Lohri as the “harvest festival”. Most farmers from rural Punjab consider the day after Lohri as the starting of new financial year. The Sindhi community popularly call Lohri as “Lal loee”. On the festive day, children request their grandparents and aunties for wood sticks which are burnt in the bonfire.

  • 2020: I say goodbye…

    By Prabhjot Singh

It is time for me to say goodbye. I was a year like no other. Many would love to forget me fast while some others may remember me for the strong messages I delivered.

“Do not play with mother nature,” was my first message that shell shocked the humanity. A minute, invisible speck, of the size of a protein, had the might of the world scurrying for cover, enforcing unprecedented universal curfew thus inflicting huge financial losses everywhere. A global pandemic shook humanity to its bones as the might of the science that made the man “undisputed king” came down on its knees to counter it.

It was me that brought you all face to face with nearly extinct flora and fauna that mankind had confined to history books. Some guests from the wild strolled on streets while habitation got a feel of clear and pure air and water. I made oil, a symbol of supremacy between superpowers, irrelevant and had the mighty hawks of the sky, both the military and the civilian aircraft, grounded. Though initially reluctant, I made Donald Trump bow out of the most powerful office on the earth and saw power changing hands elsewhere as well. With a very heavy heart I had to force a postponement, for the first time ever, of summer Olympic Games besides cancelation of England’s prestigious Wimbledon. Indian farmers in general and Punjab farmers, in particular, will never forget me. Feeling of oneness, camaraderie, and fighting the might of the State with the support of all sections of society, both peacefully and democratically, not only hawked headlines but also earned the world’s admiration.

Elsewhere there were bitter political divisions and racial unrest.

I would also be remembered for the “Black Lives Matter” agitation that shook the world.  George Floyd’s death sparked global protests. On May 25, he was arrested by police in Minneapolis for allegedly using a counterfeit bill. Video footage showed one of the officers kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he was pinned on the ground.  His repeated pleas that he could not breathe went unattended. In the weeks that followed, “Black Lives Matter” movement fueled mass protests against systemic racism and police violence in more than 2,000 U.S. cities and 60 countries around the globe. In one of the most powerful democracies, I witnessed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris winning a historic election thus preventing Donald Trump from winning the second term in office. Vice President Joe Biden clinched the Democratic nomination and chose Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate, making her the first African American, first Asian American and third female vice presidential candidate in U.S. history. Ultimately, she became the first woman to become Vice-President of the US. Besides the US Presidential election, New Zealand also went for its general elections. Ardern Jacinda won her second term in office as Prime Minister of New Zealand and she inducted Priyanca Radhakrishnan of Indian origin as a member of her council of ministers. Dr Gaurav Sharma became other Indian to enter the Parliament of New Zealand. In Canada, three provinces also witnessed early polls, and everywhere the ruling parties stormed back into power with a better mandate. In Saskatchewan, Gary Grewal became the first-ever Indo-Canadian to be elected to the Provincial Parliament. British Columbia returned New Democrats with a clear majority electing for the first time Aman Singh, a turbaned Sikh, as a member of the Provincial Parliament.

New Brunswick also called an early election to give PC a clear majority mandate. Canada also achieved a milestone in electing its 100th Member of House of Commons in the by-elections held on October 26. One of the two seats fell vacant after the resignation of the Finance Minister Bill Morneau.

In India, some States had their elections and these included Bihar where the BJP emerged as the single largest party. It still asked its alliance partner leader Nitish Kumar to head the government.

    New Year Eve song

I know it is time for you all to sing “Auld Lang Syne,” the Scottish folk song that many sing at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve It means “days gone by.” It was Robert Burns who transcribed, adapted it after partially rewriting it in the late 18th century. Its lyrics, which rhetorically ask whether “auld acquaintance” should “be forgot,” have been interpreted as a call to remember friends and experiences from the past. Bye-bye.

    I am, the Year 2020

    Sincerely,

    Prabhjot Paul Singh

Virat Kohli named ICC male cricketer of the decade, MS Dhoni receives ‘Spirit of Cricket’ honor

Dubai (TIP): India captain Virat Kohli on Monday, Dec 28, headlined the ICC top honors for the decade, winning the Sir Garfield Sobers award for the best male cricketer of the past 10 years. Kohli was also picked for the ODI Cricketer of the Decade award. Former India skipper M S Dhoni won the ‘ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade’, chosen by fans for his gesture of calling back England batsman Ian Bell after a bizarre run out in the Nottingham Test in 2011.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) made the announcements via twitter, bestowing the top honours on Kohli, who scored 66 out of his 70 international hundreds, in the “ICC Awards” period.

In the same period, he was also the batsman with most fifties (94), most runs (20396) besides having the maximum average (56.97) among players with 70 plus innings.

Overall, the 32-year-old has amassed 12040 runs in ODIs, 7318 runs in Tests and 2928 runs in T20 Internationals, averaging more than 50 across formats. Kohli was also part of the World Cup-winning India squad in 2011, something he will cherish for life.

“Firstly, it’s a great honour for me to receive this award. The moments I hold closest to my heart in the last decade definitely has to be the World Cup win in 2011, the Champions Trophy win in 2013 and winning the series in Australia in 2018,” said Kohli in a statement.

On being also named the ODI Cricketer of the Year, Kohli added: “ODI cricket is something that I took to very early. I came to the ODI team first and then, I made my Test debut a couple of years later.

“So, I got the understanding of my game pretty soon, pretty early. And as I mentioned before, my only intention and mindset was to make winning contributions for the team and I just tried to do every game that I play. “I never focussed on stats and numbers along the journey at all and those things just become the by-product of what you do on the field and those for me, just end up being milestones that you cross on the way to the path to victory.”

Dry Roast the above mentioned ingredients in a pan for 1 minute. When cooled, grind them in a mixer to a fine Powder. You can store the leftover powder in an airtight container to be used later.

    Here we go

Cut thin long slices of Onions. Grind ginger, garlic and green chillies to a fine paste adding a spoon of water if required. Put tomatoes in a blender and make a smooth puree.

Heat a pan. Add 4 Tbsp of cooking oil to it. When the oil is heated add green cardamoms and cinnamon stick to it . Roast a little and add sliced onions to it. Saute onions till light golden brown.

When onions are browned add ginger, garlic and chilli paste. Saute till fragrant. Keep on adding a little water in between for smooth roasting. When Ginger garlic changes colour add tomato puree. Saute till the oil is separated.

Time to add 2 Tbsp of spice powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, kashmiri red chilli powder and salt. Add 2 Tbsp of water as well. This prevents burning of spice powders.

Now add chicken pieces to the masala and saute for 4 minutes. You will notice the change in the colour of chicken. It will no longer be pink. It will be slightly brown now.

At this stage add 1 cup or 250 ml of water. Mix everything properly. Cover it with a lid and keep the flame low. With a slow cooking process the chicken absorbs all the flavours well and becomes delicious.

It will take around 20 minutes for the chicken to be fully cooked. Add fresh coriander and switch off the flame. Serve it with roti, naan or rice.

DUBAI  (TIP): A 12-year-old Indian boy in the UAE has entered into the Guinness Book of World Records by identifying the most aero plane tails in a minute, media reports said on Thursday.

Siddhant Gumber, an Abu Dhabi-based homeschooled boy who identified 39 aeroplane tails in 60 seconds, is also the youngest Indian to identify top 100 tallest buildings, Gulf News reported.

His name also features in the “India Book” for being the youngest to identify the top 100 tallest buildings of the world with their respective heights and locations, it said.

“I have been a Lego buff since I was a toddler, and my father and I spent a lot of time creating a variety of models – rockets, airplanes, buildings and vehicles. I was able to recognize a lot of the airplane tails, and my mother helped me compile them in PowerPoint slides so I could identify them (very quickly),” Siddhant Gumber told Gulf News.

His mother Monisha said that her son has always been interested in signs, symbols and logos. “He has an exceptional picture memory and usually never forgets an image once he has seen it. He does have a variety of interests and likes to know about things into detail, just like airplanes. Although he loves country flags, we focused on aero plane tails for the Guinness record because they too are unique,” she said.

He took about 1.5 seconds per airline tail, she added

  • Bitcoin surpasses $21,000 for first time amid dizzying rally

Bitcoin surpasses $21,000 for first time amid dizzying rally

Bitcoin surpassed $21,000 for the first time, another milestone in what’s been an eye-popping rally for the controversial digital asset this year.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency surged as much as 10% to $21,293 in New York on Wednesday, vindicating forecasts that were scoffed at months ago and leading to even higher prognostications. Bitcoin has almost tripled this year, with the rally accelerating Wednesday after breaching $20,000 earlier for the first time.
“We have a new line in the sand and the focus shifts to the next round number of $30,000,” said Antoni Trenchev, co-founder and managing partner of Nexo, a crypto lender. This “is the start of a new chapter for Bitcoin. It’s a narrative the media and retail crowd can properly latch onto because they’ve been noticeably absent from this rally.”
Bitcoin has surged despite a severe crash in March that saw it lose 25% amid the coronavirus pandemic. Proponents have seized on the narrative that the coin could act as a store of wealth amid supposed rampant central-bank money printing, even as inflation remains mostly muted.
In addition, some Wall Street firms have taken a greater interest, with many seeking to capitalize on its gains in a world of rock-bottom interest rates. Guggenheim Partners LLC, for instance, recently said it might invest up to 10% of its $5.3 billion Macro Opportunities Fund in a Bitcoin trust.
Bitcoin’s cross above the $20,000 and $21,000 levels were its latest milestones in recent weeks — the coin at the end of November reached a new high three years after setting a prior peak. It had traded at a few cents for several years after its late 2008 launch by an unknown software developer in the wake of the global financial crash.
“People tend to pile into momentum trades, so Bitcoin could have more upside from here,” said Ed Campbell, portfolio manager and managing director at QMA.
Peer coins also rose on Wednesday, with the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index — which tracks some of the major cryptocurrencies — gaining as much as 7.2%. Dash and Litecoin each advanced at least 6%.

The statement serves as another reminder of the extent to which relations between Amir and the current team management have broken down.

The Poland captain was named the FIFA Best Men’s Player for 2020 after his 55-goal season lifted Bayern Munich to a sweep of international and domestic trophies.
Lewandowski topped a three-player shortlist that included Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Voting was by a global jury of national team captains and coaches, plus selected journalists and fans. Lewandowski received 52 voting points, with Ronaldo second on 38 Messi third with 35.
Though FIFA hosted the virtual ceremony in Zurich, its president Gianni Infantino went to Munich to present the trophy in person.

Lewandowski joined Luka Modric, the Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder who won in 2018, as the only players in the past 13 years to deny both Messi and Ronaldo the victory.
“Today I am among them,” Lewandowski said in comments translated from German. “It means I’ve always done the right things in my life.”

‘Time being wasted in discussing uniform’: Rahul walks out from defense panel meeting

New Delhi (TIP): Members of the Congress party led by former chief Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, Dec 16,  walked out of a meeting of the parliamentary panel on defence.
The Congress MPs walked out with Rahul Gandhi alleging that the Parliamentary Committee on Defence’s time was being wasted in discussing armed forces’ uniform instead of crucial issues concerning national security like how to better equip the soldiers, PTI quoted sources as saying.
According to sources, during the panel’s meeting today, Gandhi wanted to bring up the matter of Chinese aggression and better equipping soldiers deployed along the border in Ladakh. However, panel chairman Jual Oram (BJP) disallowed the Congress MP.
Gandhi had made his wish to speak on the issues known when the panel was discussing uniforms of the Army, Navy and Air Force in the presence of Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat. The Congress MP said that instead of discussing the armed forces’ uniforms, the political leadership ought to take up the issues of national security and discuss how to strengthen the forces who are fighting the Chinese in Ladakh.
With the panel chairman denying an opportunity to Gandhi to speak, the Congress leader chose to walk out of the meeting. Congress members Rajeev Satav and Revanth Reddy decided to follow their leader.
It may be noted here that the Congress leader has been vocal in his criticism of the Narendra Modi government over the alleged mishandling of the now-months-long border standoff, during which India lost 20 soldiers in the June 15-16 Galwan Valley clash.
He has alleged that China has taken control of Indian territory in Ladakh with the Modi government choosing to close its eyes to the development.

  • BJP, GNLF join hands for Bengal polls

BJP, GNLF join hands for Bengal polls

Siliguri (TIP): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) will contest the upcoming West Bengal assembly polls in alliance, the two parties announced on Thursday, Dec 17, a development that may impact the electoral dynamics in the Darjeeling hills of north Bengal.
The BJP, which has won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat since 2009, was looking for a new ally after Bimal Gurung of the Gorkha Janmukti Morhca (GJM) switched his allegiance to chief minister Mamata Banerjee in October. The GNLF was a dominant force in the region since the 1980s because of its leadership in the movement demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland but lost most of its steam in recent years due to the rise of the GJM.
“We were allies of the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and our electoral partnership will continue,” Ajoy Edwards, GNLF’s Darjeeling branch president, told HT. The BJP confirmed the development. “We will contest the coming polls with GNLF as our ally,” Sayantan Basu, Bengal BJP general secretary, said. There are six assembly seats in the Darjeeling hills, of which the Trinamool Congress holds one and the BJP holds none.         Source: HT

  • Apple may embed antennas, Touch ID in future iPhone display

Apple is reportedly planning to bring iPhones with larger screens that could have Touch ID fingerprint reader and antennas embedded into the display. The iPhone maker might be working on offering its users better signal reception while still providing a secure user authentication system as well. This would also lead to thinner bezels and notches, offering more screen estate to its customers, reports AppleInsider.
In the past, reports claimed that Apple is working on an in-display fingerprint reader for its Touch ID system. Various patents had surfaced over the course of last year, which touched on topics like acoustic imaging, infrared, and more.
Even the renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted that Apple could bring the in-display fingerprint sensor on Touch ID on future iPhone models.
In addition, a patent previously revealed that the RF antenna will be covered under several layers of the display.
The antenna needs to be exposed to be able to receive signals, which is why Apple patented something called the “Display Integratable Hybrid Transparent Antenna”.
Apple will use ‘hybrid OLED’ displays on iPads from 2022
According to the report, Apple has made the decision of introducing OLEDs to iPads from 2022. In fact, it has already made requests to suppliers like Samsung Display and LG Display. What is interesting here is the new OLED tech that Apple is reportedly going to use.
Precisely, Apple will use “hybrid OLED” displays on the 2022 iPads. These are said to be thinner than typical OLED displays. Samsung will reportedly start supplying these panels in 2022 while LG Display will join a year later. A source for the report says Samsung has already started taking necessary steps for it. Also, if another source is true, Apple will use Samsung’s panel on one iPad model in 2022. Following this, both Samsung and LG will begin the full-scale supply from 2023. Speaking of which, the hybrid OLED panels will reportedly be a combination of flexible and rigid OLED. Basically, the terms refer to the rigid(glass) or flexible substrates that are being used.

  • One in four people globally may not get Covid-19 vaccines until 2022

Nearly one in four people may not get Covid-19 vaccines until at least 2022 because rich countries with less than 15% of the global population have reserved 51% of the doses of the most promising vaccines, researchers said.
Low- and middle-income countries – home to more than 85% of the world’s population – would have to share the remainder, said researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the United States.
An effective response to the pandemic requires high-income countries “to share in an equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines across the world”, they wrote.
“The uncertainty over global access to Covid-19 vaccines traces not only to ongoing clinical testing, but also from the failure of governments and vaccine manufacturers to be more transparent and accountable over these arrangements,” they added.
As of November 15, high-income nations had pre-ordered nearly 7.5 billion doses of vaccines from 13 manufacturers, the paper said.
This included Japan, Australia and Canada who collectively have more than 1 billion doses but accounted for less than 1% of current novel coronavirus cases, it said.
Even if leading manufacturers’ vaccines reach their projected maximum production capacity, nearly 25% of the world’s population may not get the vaccines for another year or more, according to the paper. The People’s Vaccine Alliance coalition last week said pharmaceutical companies should openly share their technology and intellectual property through the World Health Organisation (WHO) so that more doses can be manufactured.
The John Hopkins researchers said WHO’s COVAX Facility could play a key role in ensuring fairer access to approved vaccines but it has only secured 500 million doses, far below its target of delivering at least 2 billion doses by the end of 2021.

  • Foods to avoid if You Have Flu-Like Symptoms

Not only have been worried about staying healthy this year from COVID, but for the past couple of months, you’ve also had to put the flu on your radar, as well. If you feel like you’ve caught the flu, don’t worry, rest, tea, and nutritious foods will help to keep your immune system strong as your body fends off the virus. With that said, there are also a few foods you can avoid to help expedite this process and even make your symptoms more manageable.
    Alcohol
Alcohol is a diuretic, which means that you can become dehydrated quickly if you don’t drink water in tandem with it. If you have an elevated temperature or the onset of a low-grade fever, dehydration is something you want to avoid, as Kacie Vavrek, MS, RD, CSSD notes in an article for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Opt for sparkling water or electrolyte-infused water to help stay hydrated.
    Greasy foods
If you’re experiencing gastrointestinal issues, you’ll want to avoid fried, greasy foods. Why? These foods have a high saturated fat content, and are difficult for your body to break down. The last thing you want to do is add more stress on your gut when it’s already feeling wonky.
    Milk
The science around whether or not dairy milk causes the body to create mucus is inconclusive, however, for some it could help to alleviate pressure in their chest. If you’re already feeling congested, consider ditching the cow’s milk. And don’t miss Major Recent Findings About Dairy You Should Know.
    Sugary foods
Added sugars are known to cause inflammation in the body, which can suppress immune function. Avoid the candy, donuts, and other sugary foods (and drinks) until your symptoms subside. Instead, reach for nutrient-dense fruits that are rich in vitamin C to get your sweet fix, including oranges and strawberries. Also consider incorporating kale into your diet, one cup (raw and chopped) offers roughly 80 milligrams of vitamin C, which is 89% of your daily value (90 milligrams).
    Quinoa
Grains that are more difficult to digest should also be avoided when your stomach is feeling upset, such as complex carbs that are high in fiber such as wheat-based breads and pastas and eve grains like quinoa—especially when it’s not fully cooked. Instead, Vavrek recommends sticking to saltine crackers, toast, and pretzels.

  • Antibodies depleting faster in elderly patients: Study

A study conducted by the Transfusion Medicine Department of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has found that the antibodies are depleting at a faster rate among the Covid-19 survivors above 50 years of age. The study further found that survivors in all the age groups, who were symptomatic for just one day, had stronger and more lasting antibodies in comparison to those who were symptomatic for more than a day.
These are the two interesting results thrown up for further research on 800 Covid-19 survivors who came for plasma donation after recovering from the disease.
The results of the study also revealed that antibodies were not only in sufficient numbers but also strong when the plasma was donated within 12-53 days post-recovery.
According to the head of the Transfusion Medicine, Prof Tulika Chandra, the department conducted the study during collecting plasma from Covid-19 patients, post-recovery, for the blood and plasma bank.
Of 800 plasma donors, 400 were not found suitable for donation. While 50 of them were anaemic or underweight or HIV positive and had other complications, 70 had contact history but never tested positive through RT-PCR method. About 53 were found unfit because they had come after the lapse of the three-month post-recovery period prescribed for donation.
However, the remaining 227 donors out of 400 ‘unfit’ donors were such who fulfilled all the criteria — they had confirmed positive, post-recovery period below three months and had no other disqualification but their plasma was not taken because antibodies were either not present or were in insufficient quantity.
“A majority of such donors, both male and females, were above 50 years of age. “We do not know yet whether antibodies were not formed at all or only short-acting antibodies were formed in these cases, but the result suggests that the threat of re-infection might be higher in people above 50 years,” she said.
Further, the study revealed that the ‘quality and quantity’ of antibodies among the 400 fit donors was better in Covid-19 survivors who were symptomatic for a day in comparison to those who had symptoms for more days.
Prof. Chandra said these findings need further research to explain the phenomenon responsible for it and reach any conclusion.

    French Manicure Ideas
A French manicure is as elegant as it gets. The classic French manicure involves a pale pink base, bright white tips and a top base. If you are doing this for the first time, here’s what you need to do.
    Things you need:
    –             A bowl of warm water
    –            Towel
    –            Base coat
    –             White nail polish
    –             Soft baby pink nail polish
    –           Top coat
    Prep your nails
Like any manicure, be sure to remove all of your nail polish beforehand using acetone-free nail polish remover. Cut and file your nails into whatever shape you prefer (pro tip: oval nails look divine with French tips). Apply some cuticle oil and gently push back your cuticles. Finish with hand cream to give yourself a salon-worthy experience.
    Paint the base layer
Pick out two different colors — if you’re going classic, you’ll want to pick a sheer nude color for the base and a white polish for the tips. Start with a base coat and wait two minutes for it to dry, then use the nude polish (or whatever color strikes your fancy) all over the nail, taking care to wait two minutes between coats. While you’re painting, be sure to only do thin coats, and start at the bottom of your nail from the middle before painting the sides.
    Carefully paint the tip
After you let the second coat dry, you’ll paint the tip of the nail with white (or a statement color). You can do this freehand or use guide strips to help you — just be sure that the second coat of polish is dry enough that the guide strips won’t cause any indents. Wait another two minutes for the tips to dry, and seal it all in with a top coat.
    How to strengthen nails?
    –             Moisturizing is a well-known secret to healthy skin, but it’s often overlooked in nail care. While dry, brittle nails can be the result of many factors, they’re ultimately a cry for moisture, so consider proper moisture the foundation of your nail care routine. When applying hand lotion, give your nails a little extra attention. There are plenty of moisturizing nail products on the market, but applying moisturizer is really only half the battle—there’s more to strong nails than a fancy cream or serum.
    –            It’s common practice to cut, push back, or try to get rid of cuticles altogether, but cuticles are not the enemy. In fact, the cuticle is the nail’s natural protective seal. Messing with your cuticles can do far more harm than good
    Avoid contact with water
    –             Don’t stop washing your hands or shower with gloves on, but do pay attention to ways you can reduce the time your nails spend in contact with water, because excessive water contact can weaken nail structure. (Wet hair is especially vulnerable, and the same caution-when-wet approach you take to handling wet locks can apply to nail care, too.)
For example, consider wearing gloves while doing the dishes or other wet work.
