Classical Music Concert at Hindu Center Draws Enthusiastic Response

    • By Staff Reporter

NEW YORK (TIP) : A serene and soulful evening of Indian classical music unfolded at the Hindu Center on Kissena Boulevard, Flushing, on Sunday, November 23, 2025, as the Sriniketan Foundation presented “A Divine Evening of Classical Music and Cultural Legacy.” Organized by the Foundation’s Founder and President, Vidushi Purnima Desai, the concert brought together acclaimed artists and an appreciative audience for a memorable cultural experience.
The event opened with a devotional prayer by young students Parth, Pihu and Sonali, whose disciplined performance set a reverent tone for the evening. This was followed by a stirring rendition of Vande Mataram, the iconic ode to the motherland penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterji. The piece, rendered by Raj Dhingra, moved the audience to rise in collective respect, creating an atmosphere of solemn dignity that paved the way for the classical presentations to follow.
The first major performance of the evening featured noted vocalist Vidushi Kasturi Bandopadhyay, who presented bhajans and semi-classical compositions including thumri and dadra. Drawing from ragas such as Kafi and Khamaj, she offered a delicate blend of grace, emotion and technical finesse. Her evocative interpretation and expressive voice held the audience spellbound.
A highlight of the program was the sitar–sarod jugalbandi by Supratik Sengupta and Soumya Chakravarty. Performing Raag Rageshwari set to the 10-beat Jhaptal, the two instrumentalists engaged in a dynamic musical dialogue. Their interplay—at times competitive, at times complementary—produced a vibrant tapestry of melody, showcasing the depth of Indian classical string traditions.
Providing sensitive support throughout the evening, harmonium artist Anirban Chakraborty lent melodic structure and emotional nuance to each performance, while tabla maestro Mir Naqibul Islam drew admiration for his impeccable rhythm, clarity and expressive accompaniment. His control over tempo and mood gave each composition an added dimension, earning repeated appreciation from the gathering.
The event was conceived and executed under the guidance of Vidushi Purnima Desai, a respected cultural figure hailing from Kolkata, a city renowned for its contributions to Indian arts and literature. Desai organized the program as a free offering to the community, aligning the presentation of classical music with the sanctity of the temple setting—an aspect many attendees described as particularly meaningful.

    Time to honor the artists.

The Foundation’s cultural mission was also supported by Tejal Desai, daughter of Purnima Desai, whose quiet yet impactful role included coordinating reception arrangements and ensuring a warm and organized welcome for attendees. Volunteers including Devendrabhai and Vidyaben were acknowledged for their dedication and courteous assistance.
Rohit and Meena Pandya, long associated with the cultural initiatives of the Sriniketan Foundation, expressed gratitude for being invited to document and share the significance of the evening. They described the concert as not only a musical event but also a celebration of heritage, devotion and community spirit.
The audience left the Hindu Center with a sense of enrichment, many remarking on the rare opportunity to witness such an array of classical talent within a spiritually charged environment. The concert marked yet another milestone in Sriniketan Foundation’s ongoing efforts to promote and preserve Indian classical arts in the diaspora community.

    Thanksgiving by Vidushi Purnima Desai.

A motivating and dedicated teacher in vocal and instrumental music, dance, languages, and Indian philosophy, Purnima A. Desai is the Founder and President of Shikshayatan Cultural Center and Sriniketan Foundation, based in New York.
The two philanthropic organizations, instrumental in encouraging and supporting Indian culture through music and art, promote the beauty, goodwill, and tranquility of Indian art and culture through educational workshops teaching children and women Hindi, violin, dance, poetry, and painting.

Purnima was born in a Gujarati Brahmin family in Calcutta in 1949. She studied at Shri Shikshayatan School and College there. Her father, D.P. Desai, was a lawyer who retired as a legal advisor to The Times of India group.

    Calcutta, her love
“Calcutta played a major role in my life. I started my cultural journey from there. At Shikshayatan, I learnt Bharatanatyam, Manipuri and Kathak. I wanted to sing also but could not afford a harmonium. Instead, my parents got me a Hawaiian guitar. I learned many Bengali songs.”

After she graduated with honors in Education, her family moved to Delhi in 1968 because of the Naxalite movement. While doing her MBA there, she continued with her cultural activities, choreographed dance dramas, and became a popular face on the campus.

In 1972 she got married to Ashok C. Desai, a pharmacist by profession. For a while she worked with Sahu Jain’s Jaipur Udyog Limited as a management trainee. After a year in Bombay, she moved with her family to New York in 1973.

    Raising family in New York
In New York, Purnima worked briefly for two top banks – CITI and Chase before taking a break to bring up her three daughters: Kaveeta, Komal and Tejal. Then, she opted for the real estate business so she could work from home.
Returning to her passion for the arts, she joined the Gujarati Samaj of New York, where her kids would perform. Purnima also started performing there and choreographing as well. She also joined Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and became its executive committee member.
In 1988 Purnima founded her cultural organization – Shikshayatan, which means house of learning. She named it after her alma mater in Calcutta. Such an organization was needed to impart knowledge about Indian culture to the young generation here who are deprived of the rich Indian heritage.
Shikshayatan is open to all nationalities to come together for peace, harmony, and team spirit. It has been offering lessons in vocal and instrumental music, providing a stage for young and old performers alike. She started in the basement of her home in Flushing, Queens. Initially, she taught pro bono, but had to charge a nominal fee after she started hiring teachers.

    Role played by Shikshayatan
By now Shikshayatan has trained several loyal and dedicated students who have supported her organization by giving performances in churches, temples, community events, at South Street Seaport Deepavali celebrations, public libraries and schools. Shikshayatan has a faculty of highly educated, multitalented and professional artists. Pandit Kamal Mishra has been a great asset to the organization since 1989 and has proved his multiple talents through teaching and as a performing artist.

“I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to acquire the best from both India and the United States,” says Purnima. “My gratitude for both is infinite. Now I proudly guide our young generation to balance their life and remain peaceful and profoundly connected to both cultures.”
Each year Shikshayatan showcases the talent of internationally renowned artists and recognizes their talent, contributions, and dedication to preserving the heritage of Hindustani Classical Music. At its Sangeet Mahotsav 2023, over 47 artists performed for 12 hours nonstop with a mesmerizing experience of healing ragas and Indian classical dances.

    Service through Sriniketan Foundation
In 2015, Purnima started Sriniketan Foundation to fulfill the dream of her late father. “After the death of my mother, he was alone. So, he told me to do something for seniors so that they don’t feel lonely.”
Sriniketan Foundation’s objective is ‘Building Awareness on the Importance of Happy, Heavenly, Progressive, Peaceful and Blissful Living Style through Mind, Body and Soul Evolution.’ The Foundation promotes spiritual growth by organizing lectures, discourses, seminars, workshops, concerts, fun fairs, competitions, comedy shows and creative outlets. “My heartfelt purpose is keeping people healthy physically and spiritually and to help the less fortunate people,” says Purnima.
She attributes many of her qualities to her close association with her grandfather, L.K. Desai, and grandmother, Mani Desai. “My grandfather was highly educated, and he worked with Sardar Patel.”
Money, name, or fame – she wants nothing, just wants to work selflessly. She elaborates, “I don’t want to ask for money for Sriniketan or Shikshayatan. They should earn on their merit. If I get some funds unasked from genuine people, then I am blessed. I have organized free musical programs for senior citizens.”

Purnima has celebrated many festivals of India, and anniversaries of saints, sages, and patriotic leaders to disseminate knowledge about India. She has been blessed by spiritual masters like Mata Amritanandamayi, Morari Bapu; dignitaries and diplomats including Hillary Clinton and Dr Karan Singh; and renowned artists such as Sonal Mansingh, Padmini Ramachandran, Archana Joglekar, Pt Ramesh Narayan; astrologers and healers like Swami Chakradhari and Shakuntala Devi.

  • “My aim is to promote Indian culture”: Purnima Desai

    By Prof. Indrajit S Saluja

Purnima Desai, Founder President of Shikshayatan and Sriniketan.

Purnima Desai is synonymous with Indian classical dance  and music. Through her cultural centers-Shikshayatan and Sriniketan, she has been  providing education in Indian culture and Sanskrit and Hindi languages for about 4 decades in New York. More recently, she has been organizing cultural events through Sriniketan, and promotion of Sanskrit and Hindi languages and education through Shikshayatan. She says the enormous work that she has  planned to undertake required the scheme  of handling the two streams separately.

Recently, she completed her training in Reiki under the supervision of Dr. N.K. Sharma and Dr. Savita Sharma  of Reiki Healing Foundation , world’s largest Reiki Foundation. She is now Kriya Acharya Reiki Grand Master.

Shikshayatan will be celebrating its 35th anniversary in October, 2023. Purnima Ji’s’s Sriniketan Foundation  has planned an international Sangeet Mahotsav on October 14, 2023 to mark the happy occasion. It is billed as International Music Festival by internationally renowned artists as a Tribute to Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande.

The International Music Festival will be held at the Community Center, 143-09 Holly Avenue, Flushing, NY 11355. For more information, please see the advertisement on Page 47.

The zeal with which Purnima ji  has  been promoting Indian culture in a foreign land is absolutely commendable and a source of inspiration to all admirers and lovers of Indian culture. . Looking at her enormous work, one wonders from where  she gets all the energy , and more importantly resources, to organize the mammoth international events at which dozens of internationally acclaimed artists give their performance.

The Indian Panorama editor Prof. Indrajit S Saluja caught up with Purnima Ji to know about her current and future projects.

TIP: You have been organizing music festivals  for the  last 4 decades. How do you look at your journey?

Sikhshayatan Cultural Academy was established on Vijaya Dasami day in 1988. It’s a long journey – 35 years we are celebrating on October 14. The purpose of that organization was to promote Indian culture. It was already a very well-known organization in India. We  are just trying to promote that culture among the younger generation here so that they can keep connections with their roots and get the best from both the East and the West. That was my purpose and many children benefitted as they learnt Sanskrit slokas, Hindi language, vocal and instrumental music, and dances. I was quite successful but there is no end to the work. The greater purpose was to make good human beings. That was my goal. Now I am planning to build  educational/cultural centers and couple of temples throughout the United States. Temples will be part of educational/cultural centers where students can pray. Hopefully by 2024 it will be done.

TIP: How are you going to achieve that?

I don’t want to ask for money for Sriniketan or Sikhshayatan. They should earn on their own merit. I have some real estate properties which I will sell when the time comes.  I want to work selflessly for the community. If I get some funds from some genuine people without asking for it, which happened in the past too, then I am blessed. I have organized free musical programs for senior citizens in different senior centers. Your intention has to be pure without any expectations. I silently do my job without expecting any name or fame.

Purnima Desai with her spiritual master the Enlightened Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanth.

Moreover, my spiritual master, the Enlightened Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanth ji is there to make my task easier.

TIP: You have  had a large number of  international artists at the international music festival you organized last year. How do you manage to get these artists from across the world?

The International music festival was a unique one. I wanted to bring awareness in the community that what classical music is all about.  I was born in Kolkata, West Bengal where art is very popular. From my childhood I was crazy about classical music. Classical music does not only give you immense joy and happiness, but it also heals your soul too. It also reduces your physical pain and stress. It was therapy for the listeners who came to the festival. The artists were also very happy to perform. So, both benefited.

Purnima Desai meets the Prime minister of India , Narendra Modi in New York.

TIP. You have planned an International Music Festival for October 14. What are the highlights?

It’s going to be very interesting. We will be having dozens of internationally acclaimed artists from all over the world to display their talent. Top classical artistsare  coming. It is a day-long event , split into three sessions. It will be a rare treat for lovers of music. I hope the audience will enjoy the event.

TIP. You have  another area of interest. You are a healer, but  in a different way now. Earlier, you were healing through music. Now you are Reiki healer. Tell us something about Reiki and your education and training.

Purnima Desai with her Reiki Gurus Dr. N.K. Sharma and Dr. Savita Sharma. L to R: Dr. N.K. Sharma, Ms Tejal Desai, Dr. Savita Sharma, Purnima Desai.

Reiki is a Japanese term used for universal healing energy. This energy is actually already gifted to every human being. After a certain meditation, we can activate this energy in ourselves. And we can channelize through our body and then we can transfer to our palm. It is a kind of touch and heal technique in which once your hands get activated, then you can deal with any problem. It is a noninvasive and  a kind of non-violent energy. The beauty of Reiki is that it can influence all living and non-living. Reiki also can be used as an alternative medicine everywhere. More when you come to get treatment.

Reiki Gurus Dr. N.K. Sharma and Dr. Savita Sharma at a Reiki session organized by Purnima Desai.

I was fortunate to have the training from world renowned  Reiki Masters Dr. N.K. Sharma and Dr. Savita Sharma  of Reiki Healing Foundation , the world’s largest Reiki Foundation. And I am glad to be practicing this art of healing for the good of my brethren.

“My aim has been to promote Indian culture”: Purnima Desai

Purnima Desai , through her cultural centers-Shikshayatan and Sriniketan, been providing education in Indian culture and Sanskrit and Hindi languages for about 4 decades in New York. In fact, Shikshayatan’s 34th anniversary is being celebrated on October 29.

It’s a long journey – 34 years we are celebrating on October 29. The purpose of that organization was to promote Indian culture. It was already a very well-known organization in India. We  are just trying to promote that culture among younger generation here so that they can keep connections with their roots and get the best from both the East and the West. That was my purpose and many children were benefitted as they learnt Sanskrit slokas, Hindi language, vocal and instrumental music, and dances. I was quite successful but there is no end to work. The greater purpose was to make good human beings. That was my goal. Now I am planning to build  educational/cultural centers and couple of temples throughout the United States. Temples will be the part of educational/cultural centers where students can pray. Hopefully by 2024 it will be done.

TIP: How are you going to achieve that?

I don’t want to ask money for Sriniketan or Sikhshayatan.

Moreover, my spiritual master, the Enlightened Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanth ji is there to make my task easier.

TIP: You have recently had a large number of  international artists at the international music festival you organized. How do you manage to get these artists from across the world?

International music festival was a unique one. I wanted to bring the awareness in the community that what classical music is all about.  I was born in Kolkata, West Bengal where art is very popular. From my childhood I was crazy about classical music. Classical music does not only give you immense joy and happiness, but it also heals your soul too. It also reduces your physical pain and stress. It was   a therapy for the listeners who came for the festival. The artists were also very happy to perform. So, both were benefitted.

TIP. You have planned a cultural festival to celebrate 34 years of Shikshayatan  on October 29. What are the highlights?

It’s going to be very interesting because lot of little kids will perform – singing Bhajans, reciting Dohas of Kabir Ji. There will be dance performances by kids. One group from New Jersey is coming with 19 artists to perform geet, ghazal. There will be garba-raas as well to celebrate Diwali. A top classical artist from Kolkata – Biplab Mukherjee is coming. I hope the audience will enjoy the event.
