  • North Hempstead Celebrates India’s Independence with Enthusiasm

    NEW HYDE PARK (TIP): The air in the Town of North Hempstead buzzed with patriotic fervor of unity and celebration on August 15th as the community came together to commemorate India’s Independence Day. Hosted with grace and dedication by Town Clerk Ragini Srivastava, the event was a vibrant and heartfelt tribute to the rich heritage and enduring values of the Indian-American community. The celebration, marked by an impressive turnout, showcased the strong bonds between the town’s diverse residents and its leaders.
    The program began on a solemn and unifying note. The gathering, a mix of community members, dignitaries, and families, stood together to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, a powerful affirmation of their commitment to their American home. This was followed by a moving rendition of the American National Anthem, creating a bridge between the two nations’ shared ideals of liberty and democracy. The atmosphere then shifted to a celebration of India’s legacy as the stirring notes of “Jana Gana Mana,” the Indian National Anthem, filled the air. This powerful sequence of anthems and pledges underscored a beautiful duality—pride in one’s roots and loyalty to one’s home.

    The cultural program that followed was a feast for the senses, a showcase of India’s artistic depth and diversity. Young, talented artists took to the stage with a dynamic dance performance to the patriotic song, “Namo Bharataambe,” captivating the audience with their energy and precision. The highlight of the evening, however, was a mesmerizing Bharatanatyam performance by Ankita Deepak Khanna, a celebrated dancer, who, under the mentorship of her guru Shridhar ji, presented a dance of exquisite grace and intricate storytelling. Her movements, a blend of tradition and artistry, left the audience spellbound, a testament to the dedication and talent fostered within the community.
    The event was graced by the presence of prominent local officials and representatives, underscoring the town’s recognition of its Indian-American residents’ contributions. Town Supervisor Jen DeSena and Legislator Scott Strauss were in attendance, along with Consul of Community Affairs Tsweng Gyaltson, who represented the Indian Consulate. Their presence symbolized a strong partnership and mutual respect, with each of them offering words of congratulations and support, highlighting the vital role the community plays in the fabric of North Hempstead.
    Beyond the ceremonies and cultural performances, the celebration was an opportunity for connection. Attendees mingled, sharing stories and laughter over a spread of delicious Indian cuisine. The aroma of spices and the warmth of shared meals created a relaxed and joyful environment, transforming the event from a simple gathering into a true community festival.

    A cornerstone of the celebration was the formal recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to society. A select group of honorees, each a leader in their field, were celebrated for their valuable work. The list included Prof Saluja, a respected figure whose contribution to keep the Indian diaspora informed though the written media has influenced countless lives; Dr. Ravindra Goyal and Dr. Devender Shrivastava, who have provided invaluable medical care and leadership; Harshad Bhai Patel, recognized for his contributions to the community; and Jasbir “Jay” Singh, whose efforts have fostered greater unity and progress. Also honored were Anil Shah and for his unwavering commitment and generosity across various organizations, Mukesh Modi, whose valuable work in the cinematic realm has enriched the lives of many. Their recognition served as an inspiration, reminding everyone of the power of individual excellence and collective effort.

    The celebration, organized by Town Clerk Ragini Srivastava, served as a powerful reminder of the values of freedom and democracy shared by both India and the United States. The strong turnout and the palpable enthusiasm reflected the deep pride and unity within the Indian-American community of North Hempstead, making it a memorable and meaningful commemoration of India’s Independence Day.

    CARLE PLACE, NY (TIP): India’s Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, NY State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar , Town of North Hempstead Clerk Ragini Srivastava joined the Indian American community at the festival of colors hosted by The Indian Panorama in Carle Place in Long Island on March 24.

    Into the fifth year, the Holi and Hola celebrations started in 2019 have come to stay.

    The highlights of this year’s performances was a display of Sikh martial art – Gatka- by Sardar Daler Singh’s Gatka academy students. The guests were thrilled and spellbound to see young kids wielding swords and other weapons. They appeared to be on the battlefield. Consul General Mr. Pradhan was immensely impressed with the performance as were about a hundred guests present. The Indian Panorama honored Sardar Daler Singh with a replica of the Golden Temple.

    A Holi dance performance by students from Shilpa Jhurrani’s dance academy won the admiration and applause of the gathering. The performers were honored with a replica of the Golden Temple.

    Mr. Kulbhooshan Sharma sang a lovely Holi song “Rang barse…” and soon the ladies took to dance floor. Mr. Sharma received loud applause. He was honored with a replica of the Golden Temple.

    Mr. H.P. Singh earned the royal crown, as he was selected through a draw of lots as the Mahamoorkh. He has joined the ranks of Tirlok Malik and Ravi Batra who are his senior Mahamoorkh. He obviously cherished the new title, as he was seen grinning at the time of his coronation.

    When Surya Makkar played Dhol, it became difficult for the guests to remain seated. Soon they took to dance floor. Surya was joined by his sister Prachi Makkar who is an accomplished singer. She wove a magic web with her boliyan and tappe, and soon a large part of the gathering was dancing. The finale came with a thrilling Bhangra performance by Dr. Reena Sharma who was introduced to The Indian Panorama by an upcoming moviemaker and director Neha Lohia.

    In his address, Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan congratulated the gathering on the occasion of Holi and Hola and lauded the performances. He said he was happy to be with the Indian American community on the Long Island. He spoke about the strong relationship between India and the US and gave credit to the Indian American community for the ever-growing relationship. He expressed happiness that the Indian Americans here were preserving and promoting their culture, which was visible from the participation of the young kids.

    New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar spoke about her grim struggle to have the Diwali holiday in New York schools. She thanked the community for their support which, she said, means a lot to her.

    The Indian Panorama publisher and editor Prof. Indrajit S Saluja thanked the dignitaries who were honored with traditional shawls and a replica of the Golden Temple. Prof. Saluja said all the guests were VIPs and community leaders and thanked them for their gracious presence. He thanked Arminder Arora and Tript Arora, his long-time friends who had come from India to celebrate the 18th year of publication of The Indian Panorama, and their cousins from Connecticut who joined them at Holi and Hola celebrations.

    HICKSVILLE, NY (TIP): The Indian Panorama organized the fourth Holi & Hola celebrations at Antun’s by Minar here on March 19, 2023. Attended by over a hundred guests, the event exhibited the fraternal bonds between the diverse Indian diaspora. The very idea of celebrating Holi and the Sikh Hola Mohalla together is to promote brotherhood and amity among Indian Americans practicing diverse faiths and cultures.

    A display of the rich cultural heritage impressed the guests who included the chief guest Ambassador Randhir Kumar Jaiswal, Consul General of India at New York, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, New York State Senator Kevin Thomas, New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, Town of North Hempstead Clerk Ragini Srivastava, Nassau County former Human Rights Commission chairman Zahid Ali, Ravi Batra, Chair, the National Advisory Council on South Asian Affairs, AK Vijaykrishnan , Consul, Community Affairs, among others.

    A thrilling display of the Sikh traditional martial art called Gatka by the Akal Gatka Gurmat Group led by Sardar Daler Singh, President of Gurdwara Baba Makhan Shah Lobana left everyone spell bound Before the Gatka performance. Master Mohinder Singh, a senior leader of the Sikh community, a founder President of Gurdwara Baba Makhan Shah Lobana, spoke about the traditional Sikh martial art.
    The Gatka performance evoked from County Executive Bruce Blakeman the comment that he had never ever witnessed such a thrilling performance. He was simply awe-struck. The other attractive performances included Holi Dance by the dancers from Rhythm Dance Academy, Bollywood Medley Dance by dancers from RS International group, and a Holi Song by a Florida based celebrated singer Kadambini.
    Prachi Makkar’s Punjabi songs and Bolian brought many to the dance floor. Surya Makkar on Punjabi Dhol was a great accompanist to his sister Prachi. Bollywood singer and director Vicky Kohli regaled with his lovely singing.

    One of the attractions of the celebrations was the selection of the traditional Holi “Mahamoorkh”. Emmy nominated film maker and actor Tirlok Malik was crowned Mahamoorkh through a draw of lots.

    Speaking on the occasion, County Executive Bruce Blakeman said:
    “On the occasion of Holi and Hola. I convey my warmest wishes to all our Indian American community members here in Long Island and we are thankful to Professor Indrajit Saluja for organizing a very beautiful function to get everybody together to celebrate our culture and heritage. We celebrate every race and every religion.

    “You are such an important part of the fabric of Nassau County. Think about what your contributions have been in medicine, law, business, finance, education, technology. Your contributions make this a better County and a better country.”

    In an interview to the TV channels Global Punjab and TV Asia Mr. Blakeman said: “I am glad to be here at Antun’s in Hicksville celebrating with all my Indian Sikh friends for The Indian Panorama Holi and Hola festival. We love the Indian Americans that live here in America. They contribute so much to our county and country- medicine, technology, education, business; Indian American community contributes so much. They make us a greater County and I’m so blessed to be here. Thank you all. God bless you and have a wonderful festival.”

    Ambassador Randhir Kumar Jaiswal, Consul General of India at New York who has always maintained a close contact with the Indian American community and taken keen interest in its various activities was the chief guest. In his brief address, he praised the Indian American community for preserving and promoting Indian culture.
    The Consul General said:
    “I convey my warmest wishes to all our Indian American community members here in Long Island and we are thankful to Professor Indrajit Saluja for organizing a very beautiful function to get everybody together to celebrate our culture and heritage.” Others who spoke on the occasion included Senator Kevin Thomas, Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar and Town of North Hempstead Clerk Ragini Srivastava.

    Earlier, welcoming the guests, Prof. Indrajit S Saluja said the idea of organizing the Holi and the Hola Mohalla together was prompted by his desire to promote a feeling of togetherness, amity and brotherhood between the two major communities of Indian origin here. He thanked the gathering for their response and support.

    The organizing committee which worked real hard for the success of the event included Indu Jaiswal, Jyoti Gupta, Amita Karwal, Gunjan Rastogi, Shashi Malik, Anu Jain, Jag, Jaskiran Saluja, and Parveen Chopra. “A lot of thanks to the greatest team”, Prof. Saluja said.
    He also thanked his family for their support and advice always.
    The media persons were extremely supportive and deserve all thanks, said Prof. Saluja. TV Asia, PTC TV , ITV , Global Punjab deserve special gratitude for the extensive coverage of the event.
    Parminder was a great DJ , as usual, with excellent sound service.
    Anmol Dhawan was a great help with banners and publicity. The Indian Panorama is grateful to the young man who has always been supportive. Not to forget the great photographer Jay Mandal whose clicks will surely please our readers. Thank you, Mr. Mandal for your support.

    LONG ISLAND, NY (TIP): The community stood together in joy and pride at the celebration of 12th Outstanding Women’s Achievement Gala on March 5, a part of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day Celebrations. At the gala, attended by over 300 guests, five distinguished women with the highest caliber were honored for their achievements. Chairperson Indu Jaiswal and Gala Chair Shammi Singh, both known for their strong commitment and dedication to the community cause, along with the entire team of IAF, were the organizing force behind the GALA.

    New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar and Town of North Hempstead Clerk Ragini Srivastava were described as symbols of woman empowerment and success in his welcome address by Dr. Bobby Kalotee.

    Five distinguished women who had excelled in their profession and community services were presented with Outstanding Women’s achievements Awards. They were also presented with Citations from Deputy Supervisor Dorothy Goosby from Town of Hempstead, Joseph Saladino , Supervisor Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County Comptroller Office Elaine Phillips, Town of North Hempstead Clerk Ragini Srivastava.

    The honorees included Sandhya Bhatia, Branch Manager, Vice president of Flushing Bank , Nayana Brahmbhatt – a BAPS Volunteer, Vandana Jauhar, a leading musical artist and singer, Dr. Parul Dua Makkar, the owner of PDM Family Dental in Long Island, and Dr. Purvi Parikh, an allergist and immunologist at Allergy and Asthma Associates of Murray Hill. Young Achiever Ria Parashar is a volunteer at Children’s Hope and helps the Special Needs Community. The honorees were graciously moderated by Ratna Bhalla, Inesha Joneja, Chanbir Sethi, Roopam Maini, Dr. Prachi Dua, Dr. Pallavi Singh and Sunita Manjrekar.

    This was followed by a special Bare Foot -Special presentation by Nilima Madan. Bare Foot Empress follows the remarkable journey of Karthyayani Amma, who having never access to education as a girl finally gets to join a first-grade class at the age of 96 years. Written and directed by Michelin Star Chef Vikas Khanna it is produced by Oscar nominated Doug Roland. Video clips were provided by well-known TV anchor Ms. Renee Mehrra.

    LONG ISLAND, NY (TIP): Brahman Samaj of New York (BSNY), established in 2022, proudly celebrated Diwali-The Festival of Light at The Cotillion, NY on Sunday, November 20th, 2022. Diwali is celebration of new beginnings, change and the triumph of right over wrong, light over darkness. It is the time to come together, look forward to the future and enjoy each other’s company over delicious food, fun, and a warm atmosphere.

    Divyesh Tripathi, Founder, President of BSNY along with his committee took this opportunity to present and offer their best wishes for Diwali and new year. Also introduce BSNY Women’s Wing. Advisory Committee member, Rohit Pandya presented his welcome speech for the audience. Program Manager, Chandrakant Shah, EC members and volunteers managed the entire event very smoothly. The program began with Deep Pragatya by EC including BOD, Advisory Committee, Grand and Platinum Sponsors.

    Function was graced by Town Clerk respected Ragini Srivastava from Town of North Hempstead and  Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner forTrade, Investment and Innovation for NYC Mayor Eric Adams office for International Affairs. BSNY honored them with a flower bouquet. They appreciated President, Divyesh Tripathi and his EC for their valuable contributions to the community. BSNY expressed gratitude by presenting plaque, Certificate of Recognition & Appreciation to the individuals and organizations who contributed generously for the success of the Samaj.

    Renowned singers Kashyap Jani and Anitha Krishnan along with live band mesmerized the gathering, started with Lord Shiv Vandana, slowly followed by ever captivating Bollywood songs, inviting audience to dance and express their happiness.
