NEW YORK (TIP): Shri Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, who is on a visit to New York, was honored at a special dinner reception hosted in Long Island by Prem Bhandari, Chairman of Jaipur Foot USA and President of the Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA).

The Minister shares a longstanding association with Jaipur Foot USA. In 2023, he inaugurated two major camps for the differently-abled (Divyangjan) in Hyderabad and Tirupati. These camps were organized in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) of NY, NJ, CT & NE — an organization known for hosting the world’s largest India Day Parade outside India — and Jaipur Foot USA’s parent body, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS).

Speaking at the event, Mr. Bhandari highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s declaration of the “Panch Teerth” — five sacred sites associated with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s life:

    1. Mhow – his birthplace,
    2. Nagpur – Deeksha Bhoomi,
    3. London – where he pursued higher education,
    4. Delhi – where he passed away,
    5. Mumbai – where he was cremated.

To commemorate Dr. Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary in 2016, BMVSS organized two Jaipur Foot camps — one in Mhow and the other at Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur. Mr. Bhandari announced that, under the guidance of BMVSS Founder and Chief Patron Padma Bhushan Shri D.R. Mehta, preparations are underway for upcoming camps in Delhi and Mumbai.

He expressed gratitude for the continued support that BMVSS and Jaipur Foot USA have received from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of External Affairs, under the leadership of  Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Mr. Bhandari also commended India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador P. Harish, for organizing a special event at the UN on June 10 on Jaipur Foot and BMVSS to showcase India’s pioneering work in lower limb disability empowerment. The event will feature the impactful contributions of BMVSS in India and globally. BMVSS Founder and Chief Patron Mr D.R. Mehta and BMVSS President Ambassador Satish Mehta will arrive in New York on June 9 to participate in the event.

Jaipur Foot USA Chairman Prem Bhandari spoke at length about the enormous work being done by Jaipur Foot under the leadership of Mr. D. R. Mehta, Founder and Chief Patron of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), parent body of Jaipur Foot.

The organization has conducted 114 international camps in 44 countries, including 32 camps under the ‘India for Humanity’ initiative — fully sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mr. Bhandari, who recently visited Guatemala and Trinidad & Tobago, said that Jaipur Foot camps have been approved by the Ministry of External Affairs in :

    • Guatemala – 600 limbs
    • Sudan – 600 limbs
    • Trinidad & Tobago – 800 limbs

All three camps will be conducted later this year.

He further shared that an artificial limb fitment center will soon be opened in Malawi with MEA support, following the announcement made by President Droupadi Murmu last year.

Minister Athawale assured Mr. Bhandari of his full support for the upcoming camps in Delhi and Mumbai, being organized in memory of Dr. Ambedkar. He also praised the transformative work carried out by Jaipur Foot USA’s parent organization BMVSS in India and around the world.

Minister Atawale further said he would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider establishing a memorial for Dr. Ambedkar in New York. In response, Mr. Bhandari stated that his family would be the first to contribute toward this noble cause.

Prem Bhandari presented to the Union Minister a brochure of Jaipur Foot.

Indian American Community Gives Dr. Varun Jeph A Warm Farewell

On arrival in the room, Dr. Jeph is greeted with a bouquet.

GARDEN CITY, NY (TIP): RANA, Jaipur Foot USA, BRUHUD (New York Seniors), APS, AAPI New York, Gujarati Samaj, RAJMAI, AIA NY Chapter, Team Aid, REDIO, International Ahimsa Foundation, and Rivera’s Valentine Coffee joined hands to organize a grand farewell on March 16 for the outgoing Deputy Consul General of India in New York, Dr. Varun Jeph, who hails from Rajasthan.

This historic farewell was the first time so many U.S. national and international organizations came together to honor a Deputy Consul General at the Indian Consulate in New York. On behalf of the welcoming committee, Harish Thakkar and Ajay Patel warmly welcomed the guests.

Harish Thakkar extends a word of welcome. Seated, from L to R: Dr. K.K. Mehta, Ajay Patel, Prem Bhandari, Dr. Varun Jeph.

Prem Bhandari, President of RANA and keynote speaker at the event, praised Dr. Varun Jeph’s dedication and working style, highlighting his 24/7 availability for the Indian diaspora across the 10 U.S. states under the jurisdiction of the Indian Consulate in New York.

Bhandari emphasized that Dr. Jeph was always accessible to the community, approachable, and solution-driven, whether for passport or visa issues or assisting in the repatriation of mortal remains to India.

Reflecting on his four decades in the U.S., Bhandari noted a remarkable transformation in Indian embassies and consulates worldwide over the past 11 years. He credited this positive change to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Ms. Angel Shah gave a mesmerizing performance of Rajasthan folk dance Jhoomer.
RANA President and the keynote speaker at the event described Dr. Jeph as people’s diplomat who was always accessible and helpful

Bhandari specifically mentioned that three former Consul Generals of India in New York—Dr. Gyaneshwar Mulay, Sandeep Chakravorty, and Randhir Jaiswal—transformed the Indian Consulate into a “second home” for the Indian diaspora.

He also expressed deep appreciation for Harsh Vardhan Shringla, former Foreign Secretary of India and Indian Ambassador to the U.S., calling him a “People’s Foreign Secretary” and “People’s Ambassador”. Bhandari recalled his experience working with Shringla, especially during the COVID-19 crisis, when his leadership was instrumental in assisting the Indian community.

Bhandari expressed his delight at the unity among so many significant organizations, quoting the famous phrase:
“United we stand, divided we fall.”

Dr. Varun Jeph addressing the gathering

He also referenced the ancient Indian wisdom from the Maha Upanishad (Chapter 6, Verse 71):
“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The world is one family).

In his closing remarks, Bhandari announced that after consulting with Padma Bhushan Dr. D.R. Mehta, Founder of BMVSS (Jaipur Foot), a free Jaipur Foot artificial limb fitment camp will be organized this year at the Golden Temple, Punjab.

Forget us not. Presentation of a memento to Dr. Jeph.

A visibly touched Dr. Jeph in his farewell address reminisced his pleasant relationship with the Indian American community during his tenure of more than 3 years. “ I stand here with very mixed feelings. Like Bhandari ji said last time I was here in this hall, we were bidding farewell to my dear boss, Mr. Randhir Jaiswal. Our ambassador from Washington, DC, had joined us for that, and today, it’s my turn, my time to be here in front of you. From the bottom of my heart, I thank each one of you for taking out time. I really feel very humbled, very honored. It is my privilege, my pleasure, to have known each one of you, most of you personally, but having met almost all of you on some occasion or the other. It is a mixed feeling of gratitude, of satisfaction, a feeling of warmth, of course, lot of strong emotions, the warmth that you have shared with me, that you have bestowed on my family, my wife, my kids here and it’s never easy to say goodbye, especially to friends. It’s not easy to say goodbye, not because one is leaving a city, but because one is leaving an incredible community, a community that had become my family for the last three or four years. It was my home away from home.”

Dr. Jeph recounted the progress India has made during the last more than a decade and attributed the nation’s growth to the contribution of the Indian Diaspora. He also spoke about the constant effort of the Consulate General to provide the best services and look after the interests of the Indian American community.

    A section of the gathering

“You’ve all been a part of my life, my tenure here, and for sharing your warmth, sharing your emotions, making me a part of your family. I say farewell with a deep sense of gratitude, of course, but also with a deep sense of optimism. The only way forward for this relationship is upwards. We hold very bright future, and the future of this partnership, to a great extent, lies in your hands. And I go back with great confidence that it will continue to strengthen with every day as in the past, and I really hope that our paths cross again. I’ll be based in Delhi for next two, two and a half years. So whenever you come there, please do meet me. I would keep coming back. My family is going to be here till June. I’ll most likely come back to see them. So I wouldn’t say goodbye just yet. I’ll meet several of you then. And I would like to finish by thanking you all once again, for your warmth, for your friendship, for your kindness, for your support. And I look forward to keeping in touch with all of you. May God bless America! May God bless India! May God bless the Indo American partnership! Thank you.”

  • RANA New York President Prem Bhandari terms Marriott Jaisalmer’ unethical conduct a setback to Association’s Efforts to Promote Rajasthan Tourism

Demands Investigation into the hotel’s operations for irregularities

    President, RANA, New York

NEW YORK (TIP): The Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA) New York has declared 2025 as the International Tourism Year to prom ote Rajasthan as a global travel destination. Even without this initiative, RANA New York remains the most influential and largest organization of Rajasthanis outside Rajasthan, consistently working for the state’s welfare and promotion. Over the past 25 years, RANA has been actively advocating for tourism in Rajasthan. The organization has also successfully hosted four international conventions attended by former Chief Ministers Ashok Gehlot (twice, along with his cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats) and Vasundhara Raje (with her cabinet colleagues and bureaucrats).

As part of its ongoing tourism promotion efforts, RANA President Prem Bhandari advised a Florida-based Indian American family of Rajasthan origin in November 2024 on the best places to visit in Rajasthan. Following this guidance, the family, along with relatives from India, booked their stay in Jaisalmer and purchased air tickets well in advance.

The family arrived in India on March 7, 2025. On the same day, they received an email from Marriott Jaisalmer stating that due to a high-level central government meeting, they would need to relocate some guests to other hotels. This sudden notice caused significant distress to the family. Nonetheless, they proceeded with their journey and reached Jaisalmer on March 8, with some members scheduled to join the next day.

Upon arrival, the hotel began exerting pressure on the family to shift to another hotel—one where room prices in November 2024 had been half of what they had paid for their Marriott booking. This unexpected situation put the Florida family and their extended relatives under severe stress.

Early in the morning, the distressed family contacted Prem Bhandari, who immediately intervened by reaching out to the hotel’s General Manager (GM) to express his strong disapproval. Several WhatsApp exchanges followed between Bhandari and the GM, but the tension persisted. Eventually, after Bhandari’s intervention, the GM agreed to honor the original booking and assured that the family, along with other incoming guests, would not be relocated.

As news of this incident spread among RANA members in New York, they urged Bhandari to investigate the supposed high-level central government meeting that Marriott had cited as the reason for the relocation. To Bhandari’s shock and disbelief, no such meeting was scheduled. Instead, the hotel had fabricated the story to accommodate a corporate conference for Pfizer, a U.S.-based pharmaceutical giant, which promised greater profits for the hotel.

Bhandari strongly condemned this unethical behavior, emphasizing that such deceitful practices severely damage Rajasthan’s global reputation as a premier tourism destination. He reaffirmed RANA’s commitment to promoting tourism in Rajasthan with integrity and ensuring that such incidents do not tarnish the state’s hospitality image.

In a statement released to The Indian Panorama, Mr. Bhandari, in his capacity as the President, Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA), has demanded from the relevant government of India agencies to “investigate the hotel’s operations for any other potential irregularities”, and ensure that tourists from abroad get a fair deal.
“As the President of the Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA), I was surprised when Marriott Jaisalmer failed to provide any proof of the central government meeting they had cited in their email. Upon further inquiry, I discovered that the claim was fabricated to accommodate a private conference for a U.S.-based company, Pfizer, and maximize their profits.

This blatant misrepresentation is not only unethical but also deceptive to guests and stakeholders. We will escalate this matter to Marriott’s corporate leadership, urging them to take strict action, including the possible cancellation of the hotel’s franchise. Simultaneously, we will request the relevant Indian government agencies to investigate the hotel’s operations for any other potential irregularities.”

  • Dr Shiv K. Sarin’s book “Own Your Body” Generates Keen Interest at the Discussion of the Book

Dr Shiv K. Sarin’s book “Own Your Body” Generates Keen Interest at the Discussion of the Book

RANA president Prem Bhandari highlighted the compassionate and selfless approach of Dr Shiv

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): It was an inspiring and engaging event. The audience comprising of doctors and community leaders heard Dr Sarin’s words of pragmatic wisdom with rapt attention. Padma Bhushan Dr Shiv K Sarin, founder, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi is recognized with “Distinguished Clinician Award in Academic Practice’ by American Gastroenterological Association.

The Consul General of India, Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, in his opening remarks spoke about the leading role of Dr Shiv in the field of health care. RANA president Prem Bhandari highlighted the compassionate and selfless approach of Dr Shiv. He suggested that this important book should be translated into Hindi and Rajasthani also.

Dr. Shashi Shah introduced Dr. Shiv K. Sarin

Prem Bhandari made a digression when he congratulated Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan for his decision to keep the Consulate open on all days of the week to better serve the community. He said, “The Indian Consulate in New York has become the first not only in the US but globally to remain open 365 days a year. Bhandari praised the CG for institutionalizing this decision. Since 2014, the New York Consulate has been open on weekends and holidays in emergencies such as deaths or serious health issues of relatives, even during severe weather conditions like 24-inch snowfalls. Previously, the Indian diaspora had to approach community leaders or organizations for help during such times. Now, with this institutionalized process, everyone knows the consulate will remain open on holidays and weekends”. The New York Consulate has jurisdiction over ten states in the US, providing significant relief to the Indian diaspora living in these areas. Bhandari urged that Indian consulates, not only in the US but worldwide, should follow Binaya Pradhan’s example and remain open 365 days a year, wherever there are sizable Indian communities.

Dr. Shiv K. Sarin explained how the combination of what we inherit and our habit pattern is related to our longevity and healthy life

Dr Shashi Shah reflected on his college days with Dr Shiv. Both are alumnus of SMS Medical College, Jaipur. Dr Shashi, having read the book, used his friendly force to persuade Dr Sarin and was instrumental in mounting this program for the community members of New York.

Dr Shiv Sarin, a distinguished Indian physician, is a beacon of medical expertise, clinical research and has made huge contribution to medical education. From his academic origins at S.M.S. Medical College Jaipur to his leadership role at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, Dr Sarin is hailed as a healthcare luminary dedicated to the wellbeing of millions affected by liver and metabolic disorders. The ILBS is today the largest liver hospital in India and a deemed liver university.

In his opening remarks, Dr Shiv suggested that Indian Consulate should have local health body, a collegium of doctors of Indian origin to issue guidelines for the community. The core of this evening after formal launch of the book by the dignitaries was stimulating interaction between Dr Shashi and Dr Shiv. He opened with simple question, ‘Why did you write this book?’, to which author responded with a chuckle and remarked, “he has started ragging me”. Both swiftly got down to the business of developing an eye-opening dialog, which generated a genuine sense of cultivating healthy habits among the audience.

    A view of the audience

Dr Shiv Sarin’s ‘Own Your Body’ builds a bridge between common man and medical terminology, while narration of the book in the story form deals with characters, their aspirations, their emotional equations and also deals with the medical challenges posed by fatty lever. How to prevent it? Dr Shah questioned the author on the suggestion of giving priority to gene matching over horoscope matching. This was an evening which was looking at health in an integrated way, where flow of health from generation to generation was also considered. How a normal looking healthy boy may be prone to heart attack. Dr Sarin explained that the combination of what we inherit and how our habit pattern is related to our longevity and healthy life.

The frequent reference of challenges posed by obesity and stage of becoming insulin resistant was also explained in simple terms. When one hears that over 80 percent kids in India are walking less than 30 minutes a day and it doesn’t speak good of their healthy future, one wonders, how to reverse the process.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, writes about the book, ‘Own Your Body’, ‘After reading this book, one would realize that good health is not as much a function of one’s genetic makeup as it is of one’s lifestyle choices.’

Dr. Sarin gifted a copy each to the Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Deputy Consul General Dr. Varun Jeph, and organizers of the event.

Dr Shashi echoed the same spirit expressed in the words of Dr Shiv “Do not outsource your health to doctors. Embrace self-care. As the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Medical Council of India (MCI), Dr Sarin played a pivotal role in shaping medical education and conceptualized the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Dr Sarin has also been at the forefront of policy initiatives, including the national viral hepatitis control program and the integration of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease into national programs.

Beyond his exceptional clinical talents, Dr Sarin is a gifted teacher and a master communicator, epitomizing medical excellence and ethics. Committed to community service, he has been a pivotal figure in the fight against hepatitis. Honored with prestigious awards such as the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and Padma Bhushan, Dr Sarin symbolizes the harmonious convergence of medical excellence and altruistic fervor.

His work, encapsulated in the mantra ‘Own Your Body’, transcends medical expertise, showcasing the profound impact one individual can have on the health and happiness of millions.

The event was jointly organized by RANA, AAPI QLI and RAJMAAI. Mrs Neelam Modi was master of ceremony for the evening and Dr Raj Bhayani extended ‘Vote of thanks’ on behalf of the organizers.
