Classical Music Concert at Hindu Center Draws Enthusiastic Response

NEW YORK (TIP) : A serene and soulful evening of Indian classical music unfolded at the Hindu Center on Kissena Boulevard, Flushing, on Sunday, November 23, 2025, as the Sriniketan Foundation presented “A Divine Evening of Classical Music and Cultural Legacy.” Organized by the Foundation’s Founder and President, Vidushi Purnima Desai, the concert brought together acclaimed artists and an appreciative audience for a memorable cultural experience.
The event opened with a devotional prayer by young students Parth, Pihu and Sonali, whose disciplined performance set a reverent tone for the evening. This was followed by a stirring rendition of Vande Mataram, the iconic ode to the motherland penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterji. The piece, rendered by Raj Dhingra, moved the audience to rise in collective respect, creating an atmosphere of solemn dignity that paved the way for the classical presentations to follow.
The first major performance of the evening featured noted vocalist Vidushi Kasturi Bandopadhyay, who presented bhajans and semi-classical compositions including thumri and dadra. Drawing from ragas such as Kafi and Khamaj, she offered a delicate blend of grace, emotion and technical finesse. Her evocative interpretation and expressive voice held the audience spellbound.
A highlight of the program was the sitar–sarod jugalbandi by Supratik Sengupta and Soumya Chakravarty. Performing Raag Rageshwari set to the 10-beat Jhaptal, the two instrumentalists engaged in a dynamic musical dialogue. Their interplay—at times competitive, at times complementary—produced a vibrant tapestry of melody, showcasing the depth of Indian classical string traditions.
Providing sensitive support throughout the evening, harmonium artist Anirban Chakraborty lent melodic structure and emotional nuance to each performance, while tabla maestro Mir Naqibul Islam drew admiration for his impeccable rhythm, clarity and expressive accompaniment. His control over tempo and mood gave each composition an added dimension, earning repeated appreciation from the gathering.
The event was conceived and executed under the guidance of Vidushi Purnima Desai, a respected cultural figure hailing from Kolkata, a city renowned for its contributions to Indian arts and literature. Desai organized the program as a free offering to the community, aligning the presentation of classical music with the sanctity of the temple setting—an aspect many attendees described as particularly meaningful.

    Time to honor the artists.

The Foundation’s cultural mission was also supported by Tejal Desai, daughter of Purnima Desai, whose quiet yet impactful role included coordinating reception arrangements and ensuring a warm and organized welcome for attendees. Volunteers including Devendrabhai and Vidyaben were acknowledged for their dedication and courteous assistance.
Rohit and Meena Pandya, long associated with the cultural initiatives of the Sriniketan Foundation, expressed gratitude for being invited to document and share the significance of the evening. They described the concert as not only a musical event but also a celebration of heritage, devotion and community spirit.
The audience left the Hindu Center with a sense of enrichment, many remarking on the rare opportunity to witness such an array of classical talent within a spiritually charged environment. The concert marked yet another milestone in Sriniketan Foundation’s ongoing efforts to promote and preserve Indian classical arts in the diaspora community.

    Thanksgiving by Vidushi Purnima Desai.

NEW DELHI (TIP): The T20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team returned to the country here on July 4 aboard a specially-arranged charter flight with scores of fans lining up outside the airport to welcome the players despite a steady drizzle and heavy security deployment that kept them at a distance from their heroes.
Hundreds of supporters, holding placards congratulating their favourites and waving the national flag, braved the weather to welcome the victorious side, which defeated South Africa by seven runs in the final in Bridgetown on Saturday last week.
“We have waited for this moment for the past 13 years. The team has made us proud by winning the World Cup,” a fan, who claimed to have been waiting since 4:30am in the morning said, referring to India’s last World Cup triumph which came back in 2011.
The side was unable to head back home immediately after the title win due to a shutdown forced by hurricane Beryl in Barbados.
They were cocooned in their hotel before the BCCI made arrangements for the special charter flight.
The Air India special charter flight AIC24WC — Air India Champions 24 World Cup — which left Barbados around 4:50am local time on Wednesday arrived in Delhi at 6am (IST) on Thursday after a 16-hour non-stop journey.
The Indian squad, its support staff, the players’ families and some BCCI officials were aboard the flight along with members of the travelling media contingent. Heavy security was deployed to keep the crowd in check at the Indira Gandhi International airport but that did little to dampen the spirits as fans cheered enthusiastically holding up posters of star batter Virat Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma and outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid. Two buses were stationed outside the T3 Terminal to ferry the players to their hotel, from where they will head to the Prime Minister’s residence at 9am tentatively for a reception.
They trickled out in ones and twos after completing immigration formalities.
Tired but excited, the players acknowledged the waiting fans by waving at them and flashing warm smiles.
Suryakumar Yadav, who took the sensational match-winning catch of David Miller in the final, was the most enthusiastic in responding to the cheering.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant saluted the gathered crowd, while pacer Mohammed Siraj blew flying kisses in their direction.
Rohit and Player of the Final Virat Kohli, both of whom retired from T20Is at the end of India’s campaign, were among the last to come out of the VIP exit.
Rohit, who held the coveted trophy in his hands, raised it for the fans to catch a glimpse before boarding the bus.
Kohli gave a thumbs up to acknowledge the support before taking his place in the bus.
In their excitement to see their heroes in person, some fans claimed that they had been waiting outside the airport since last night.
“We have been here since last night. It was very important for us to win this World Cup after losing the ODI World Cup last year,” a group of fans said.
The squad won the country its second T20 world title, ending an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy, on Saturday.
India’s previous ICC title was in 2013 when it won the Champions Trophy under Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
From the airport, Team India reached the ITC Maurya hotel, where they stayed before their meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Notably, Virat, Rohit, Hardik, head coach Rahul Dravid and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny were spotted at the hotel.
A special cake featuring the T20 World Cup trophy was cut at the hotel to celebrate the win. Rohit, Virat, Dravid and all-rounder Hardik Pandya were among the stars who took part in the cake-cutting. The cake featured the trophy and some pictures of Indian stars. (PTI)

Eye on World T20, India to explore options

Ahmedabad (TIP): India, winners of the inaugural T20 World Cup back in 2007, have done little of note in the tournament since then. Thus, Virat Kohli would have his eye on this year’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India in October-November, when India play England in a five-match T20I series starting here tomorrow. In recent past, India have done well in T20Is — in 2020, they lost only one match out of 10 played, winning seven outright and two in the Super Over after ties in regulation. They won the three-match series 2-1 in Australia and beat New Zealand 5-0. This positivity makes the team confident, and Kohli would be keen to explore the best combinations for the future in the series against the tough, well-rounded England. Kohli’s primary aim would be to get an idea of his core group of players going into the T20 World Cup. While there are more advantages of having multiple options, fashionably described as a “happy headache” for any captain, there are a few pitfalls that come with such a situation. Kohli understands this well, having burnt his hands during the 2019 World Cup, where India didn’t have a settled No. 4.

    Rohit-KL pair

Kohli  made it clear that his deputy Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul will be the first-choice opening pair going into the World T20, Shikhar Dhawan being in the reserves. “If Rohit plays, then it’s simple. KL (Rahul) and Rohit have been performing consistently at the top of the order for us and those two will start,” Kohli said.

While Suryakumar Yadav is a sentimental favourite for many after last year’s IPL and his subsequent non-selection for the Australia tour, fellow Mumbaikar Shreyas Iyer looks a likely starter at least in the first couple of games. The Motera track will certainly be a flat deck, suiting the needs of the shortest format. Whether it is Rohit, Rishabh Pant or Hardik Pandya for the hosts and captain Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Dawid Malan and Jason Roy for England, the ball is likely to be hit out of the ground regularly.

    Bhuvi back

In the bowling department, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be back leading the attack alongside another senior, Yuzvendra Chahal, for company. With England’s weakness against slow bowlers well-documented in these conditions, Chahal could have both Washington Sundar and Axar Patel bowling spin with him, which leaves Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini vying for one spot. For England, the white ball format presents opportunities to multi-skilled cricketers like Stokes, Sam Curran and IPL auction sensation Moeen Ali for starters, who can change the complexion of any game in either department.
