Suozzi Leads Letter to Social Security Administration, Expresses Alarm at Potential DOGE Access

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): Congressman Suozzi, on February 11, led a Ways and Means letter to Michelle King, Acting Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The letter was co-signed by every Democratic Member of the Ways and Means Committee, including Ranking Member Neal (D-MA).
The letter expressed alarm about the recent access Elon Musk and the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”) was able to gain to the Department of the Treasury’s payment systems, and conveyed further concern about reports that DOGE plans to turn its attention to the SSA.
“Social Security has been the bedrock promise of economic security in our nation for the last century,” the Members wrote. “After a lifetime of work or in life’s most precarious moments, it provides benefits to approximately 70 million people across the United States, including seniors, survivors, and people with disabilities.”
The SSA has access to Americans’ most personal information, including banking information, home addresses, disability status, medical conditions, if a parent or spouse has died, and Social Security numbers themselves.
The letter also requests Commissioner King respond to several questions regarding the security of Americans’ Social Security information within 72 hours. These inquiries include an assessment of potential risks to information, whether or not DOGE has requested access to SSA’s systems, and what kind of security checks are currently in place.
“We will not stand by and allow the sensitive personal information of our nation’s Social Security beneficiaries to be politicized or bought and sold to the highest bidder, or to allow any harm to their Social Security benefits,” the Members continued. “The stakes are too high and the consequences too grave.”
“My office alone has received more than 1,000 calls from constituents who are afraid Elon Musk and his DOGE team of college-aged kids have unfettered access to their private information,” said Suozzi. “No one, including DOGE, should be ransacking the confidential information of private citizens, whether that information relates to their taxes, their healthcare, their social security status, or anything else.”

  • Democrats repose trust in Tom Suozzi for special election for Congress to fill expelled congressman Santos’s seat

Democrats repose trust in Tom Suozzi for special election for Congress to fill expelled congressman Santos’s seat

“I delivered for this district before, and I will do it again”, says Suozzi

    • I.S. Saluja

NEW YORK (TIP): Tom Suozzi, on December 7, was named the Democratic candidate for the special election to fill the 3rd Congressional District seat left vacant since George Santos was expelled last week.
“Tom Suozzi has a proven record of fighting for his constituents, fighting to safeguard our suburban way of life here on Long Island and Queens and always advocating for sensible solutions to the real challenges affecting everyday average Americans,” said a joint statement from Nassau County Democratic Chair Jay Jacobs and Queens County Chair, Congressman Gregory Meeks.

Jay Jacobs, the state and Nassau Democratic chairman, and Fifth District Rep. Gregory Meeks, the Queens County party chairman, announced Suozzi’s selection as the party’s nominee on Thursday, December 7, after an advisory vote of party executive committee members.

Political party leaders choose the candidates in a special election, according to New York elections law. There will be no primary in the special election.

Meeks said voters “want someone to represent the district with somebody that they know. Many of the constituents previously were coming to other members to get constituency services. Those days will soon be over.”
Jacobs said the race will get, “national attention, as it should.”
“We have begun already. We knew this day was coming,” he said.

Suozzi, who held the seat from 2017 through 2022, said in a statement he would “work day and night with both parties to deliver for the people to make living here more affordable, safer, and better. I delivered for this district before, and I will do it again by putting you ahead of partisanship. Let’s reject the nonsense and get back to work. Let’s Fix This!” National Republicans and Democrats view the Third District race as key to the battle for control of the House. After Santos’ expulsion and California Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s resignation at the end of the year, Republicans will be able to lose only three votes on a party-line vote and still get a bill passed, if every House member is in attendance.

The Third District includes parts of Queens and the North Shore of Nassau County, as well as parts of southwestern Nassau. The district has more than 531,000 registered voters, state board of election filings show. 38 % are registered Democrats, 28% are Republicans and 28% are not registered with any political party.

Whoever wins the special election will have to run for election to a full two-year term in November and could face the prospect of having to run in a June party primary. The job pays $174,000 a year.

Suozzi is a former mayor of Glen Cove and two-term Nassau County Executive. In the House, he sat on the powerful Ways and Means Committee and served as a vice-chair of the bipartisan House Problem Solvers Caucus.

Suozzi, who did not seek re-election in 2022, instead ran that year for New York governor. He finished third in the Democratic primary. The Third District has changed substantially since 2020, the last time Suozzi ran for the seat, when it included parts of Suffolk County. The election takes place on Feb. 13. Republicans are expected to choose their challenger early next week.

DAVID WEPRIN RELEASES OFFICIAL CAMPAIGN VIDEO

QUEENS,NY(TIP): Democratic Queens Assembly Member David Weprin, on Feb 9, released his official campaign video, outlining why he’s running to be NYC’s next Comptroller. “It’s time New York renewed its commitment to hard working people like my mom, who’ve made this the greatest city in the world,” David Weprin says in the video. “That’s why I’m running for New York City Comptroller. I’ve always fought for everyday New Yorkers, stood shoulder to shoulder during tough times, found real solutions and seen us, as New Yorkers, emerge stronger.” The video features Weprin’s mother, Sylvia, a Cuban-Jewish immigrant who came to New York City for a better life. He notes her work as a public-school teacher and how he wants to help her, and other seniors like her, protect their pensions. Weprin goes on to say he’s running to stand up for the needs of working and middle-class families, single parents, and immigrants like his mother. She’s also featured in a Spanish language version of the video.

If elected, Weprin has committed to opening a Comptroller Office in each of the five boroughs. The goal is to provide individuals and small businesses in financially underserved communities easier access to economic opportunities, financial institutions, and small business relief assistance.

Weprin is the only candidate running for Comptroller with the necessary municipal financial experience, having balanced the City’s budget as Chair of the City Council’s Finance Committee for eight consecutive years. He guided the City’s finances through the post-9/11 recession and the 2008 recession. He was also the chair of the Subcommittee on Banking in Underserved Communities. Previously in his public service career, Weprin served as the Deputy Superintendent of Banks and Secretary of the Banking Board for New York State, where he was a watchdog of nearly $2 trillion, regulating more than 3,000 financial institutions and financial service firms in New York State, including international banking institutions, mortgage brokers, and mortgage bankers.

Weprin is currently Chair of the New York State Assembly’s Committee on Correction where he has championed critical legislation reforming our criminal justice system. He has authored groundbreaking legislation including the Adoptee Bill of Rights and the Religious Garb Bill and has made standing up for middle class New Yorkers a central theme of his campaign for Comptroller.

In a testament to Weprin’s record and the work he’ll do as Comptroller, he has earned the most diverse set of endorsements of any candidate in this race, including: U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (Queens), NYS Assembly Members Michael Benedetto (Bronx), Dick Gottfried (Manhattan), Rebecca Seawright (Manhattan), Vivian Cook (Queens), Jenifer Rajkumar (Queens), Jeff Aubrey (Queens), Cathy Nolan (Queens), Maritza Davilla (Brooklyn), Bill Colton (Brooklyn), Stacey Pheffer Amato (Queens), NYC Council Members Karen Koslowitz (Queens), Barry Grodenchik (Queens), Peter Koo (Queens), the NYS Court Officers Association, William Kregler, President of the NYC Fire Marshals Benevolent Association, former Congress Member Steve Israel, the former Chair of the DCCC who represented part of Queens in the House of Representatives, former NYS Lt. Governor Richard Ravitch, former New York Attorney General G. Oliver Koppell, and Manhattan’s East River Democratic Club.

In addition to his growing list of supporters, Weprin outraised all his opponents in the latest filing period, bringing his total amount raised, with expected matching, to more than $2 million.

Weprin is a graduate of Jamaica High School, SUNY at Albany, and holds a law degree from Hofstra University. A father of five children, and grandfather of six, David and his wife, Ronni, live in Holliswood, Queens.
