The Sikh Temple Of North Texas, Garland Organizes Sports Mela
DALLAS (TIP): Despite bad weather conditions, the Sports Mela organized by the Sikh Temple of North Texas, Garland, March 30th, attracted a large number of sportspersons and sports lovers. It was the 13th annual sports event organized by the Temple management with the tremendous support of the 400 families strong congregation. The organizers had expected some 400 participants in about a dozen events. But weather played foul and held back some of them. However, hundreds of men, women and children participated in the events.
Hundreds cheered the participants. Women seemed to be more enthusiastic and were seen constantly cheering up the participants, particularly, if the participants were members of their family. The sports included races, basket ball, skipping, volleyball, soccer, tug-o-war etc. The organizers had very thoughtfully created age groups for participants. It was sheer joy to see the participants vying for honors in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Among the more interesting sports were the three legged race and spoon in mouth carrying a ball. Kids really enjoyed the fun a lot. The prize winners were surely on the ninth cloud but their relations and friends were no less delighted. They were seen rushing to congratulate and hug the prize winners. Prizes were given away by senior citizens. Gurjit Kaur, a senior citizen, has been coming every year in the last 13 years to watch the sports.
Her daughter Rashpal Kaur and her grand daughter Raman Kaur who is 8 were with her. They said they enjoyed the event immensely. Jarnail Singh, 40, had his three kids participating. His 15 year old daughter Charanpreet Kaur who participated in a race won 2nd position. Navjot Johl, 11 years old, won 2nd position in Jumps. His third daughter, 9 year old Pritpal Johal got a 3rd position. Jarnail Singh was very pleased and said to this reporter that it was worth the while to bring the kids for sports events. However, he had some suggestions for the organizers. First, he said, the organizers should have a time schedule for each sporting event. Second, there should be some entertainment also. It should be in the form of dances, like Bhangra and songs. A community event, it had full community support, according to Manjit Singh Sahota, President of Garland Sikh Temple. He gave credit for the success of the sports mela to the community and his colleagues on the managing committee.
He had special word of appreciation and gratitude for the sponsors. He mentioned to me that almost every food item and medals for prize winners were sponsored. Nat Family sponsored medals in the memory of Jasjeet Singh Nat. Langar was sponsored by Noni Toor, Sodhi Toor and Toor family. Water and soft drinks were sponsored by Davinder Singh Toor. The much liked Kulfi was sponsored by S. Haripritam Singh of Karinas Kulfi and the delectable Jalebi by Lalli Sandhu. Others recognized included donors and senior citizens who were kind enough to come and give away the prizes. Mr. Sahota also recognized Vijay Handa for his services.
The most appreciation was reserved for the sports committee that organized the sports mela. It included Noni Singh Toor, Avtaar Singh Parvagga,Mandhir Singh Bal, Balkar Singh, Rakesh Saini, Harjit Singh Randhawa, Shera Punjab Singh Randhawa, Jeeta Randhawa,Sodhi Singh Toor, Gurshant Singh,Paramjit Sodhi, and Manjinder Kaur Banipal. Southwest Airlines And AirTran Airways Connect Networks
DALLAS, Texas (TIP): Southwest Airlines announced today that it has successfully completed the connection between the Southwest and AirTran networks. Customers are now able to purchase itineraries to the airlines’ combined 97 destinations, including international, in one transaction. The newly connected itineraries are on sale now via all Southwest and AirTran sales channels for service starting on April 14. “We began rolling out shared itineraries in January in a handful of markets, and we’ve gradually ramped up the initiative where we now connect our entire network across both Southwest and AirTran,” said Bob Jordan, Chief Commercial Officer at Southwest Airlines and President of AirTran. “With a connected network, we can offer Customers more itineraries, more destinations, more low fares, and a taste of what’s to come once the integration is complete.” Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways took the first step in connecting their networks on Jan. 26, 2013, by offering a small number of connected itineraries in five markets. On Feb. 25, 2013, the airline launched connected itineraries in 39 cities.
By connecting the Southwest and AirTran networks, Customers may: Add one or more AirTran domestic flight segments to a Southwest itinerary, using Southwest booking channels (southwest.com, 1-800-IFLYSWA, travel agencies, Southwest’s mobile site and apps, and Southwest Airlines ticket counters.) Book one or more Southwest flight segments connecting to an AirTran itinerary, using AirTran channels. Use all Southwest channels to book an AirTran-only domestic itinerary. Add an international AirTran segment to a Southwest itinerary within a single reservation, through a Customer-friendly transfer of the transaction to AirTran channels for booking, purchase, and ticketing by AirTran. Earn currency in either loyalty program no matter which carrier they fly. (The currency a Customer earns is determined by the carrier from which they buy their ticket, even if flying on a shared itinerary.) As is standard with industry “code share” arrangements, the Marketing Carrier’s (where you buy your ticket) rules and policies apply to reservations and ticketing. The Operating Carrier’s (which airline operates the flight) procedures apply to boarding, seating, and the onboard experience.
Southwest is making one exception: any itinerary with a Southwest segment or that is purchased through a Southwest point-of-sale channel will not have bag fees for the first or second checked bag (weight and size restrictions apply.) Customers can find specific details and answers to frequently asked questions by visiting www.southwest.com Customers will continue to earn and redeem currency through the frequent flyer loyalty programs of their Marketing Carrier, regardless of the Operating Carrier they travel on.
Customers should be enrolled in both Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards and AirTran Airways A+ Rewards programs in order to earn currency from whichever airline they purchase a ticket. Loyalty Members also have the ability to transfer their currency between the two loyalty programs. For more information about transferring loyalty currency, visit www.rewardsfarther.com Southwest Airlines announced plans to acquire AirTran Airways on Sept. 27, 2010, an acquisition that significantly expanded Southwest Airlines’ low-fare service to more Customers in more domestic markets, creating hundreds of additional low-fare itineraries for the traveling public.
Since Southwest Airlines closed the deal to purchase AirTran Airways on May 2, 2011, Southwest and AirTran Employees have worked hard to facilitate a thoughtful and smooth integration process while providing the same high level of Customer Service that Customers have come to expect.
To date, Southwest Airlines has welcomed 30 percent of AirTran Employees to the Southwest Family, has converted 11 AirTran Airways 737-700 aircraft to the Southwest paint scheme and interior configuration, and has transitioned five AirTran Airways-served cities into Southwest Airlines operations. The process of a full integration of the AirTran Airways 737 fleet into the Southwest Airlines fleet (i.e. paint scheme and interior configuration) and transition to a single ticketing system is a large and complex process that is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. Southwest Airlines realized $142 million of net, annualized, pre-tax synergies during 2012, and expects to achieve $400 million in 2013 (excluding acquisition and integration expenses).

US House votes to prevent March 27 federal shutdown; Obama reaches out to Senate
WASHINGTON (TIP): Legislation easily passed the US House of Representatives on March 06 to avert another partisan budget battle and a possible government shutdown, and a dinner meeting between President Barack Obama and Senate Republicans offered signs of a thaw in relations. By a vote of 267-151, the House passed a measure to fund government programs until the end of the fiscal year on September 30. The Democratic-controlled Senate is expected to pass a similar bill next week. Without such legislation, federal agencies would run out of money on March 27. The bill to continue funding the government without last-minute drama occurred as Obama took the unusual step of inviting Republican senators to a dinner on Wednesday night at a Washington hotel a few blocks from the White House that lasted about an hour and a half.
Attendees emerged optimistic about the prospects for the elusive big deal to put the nation’s finances on a more sustainable track in a way that satisfies both Democrats and Republicans. “It was a really good conversation,” Republican Senator John Hoeven said. “It was candid,” he said. “We really talked about how do we get to a big agreement in terms of the debt and deficit.” An administration official told Reuters before the dinner that Obama had been hoping to take advantage of a lull in a series of budget crises to launch a dialogue with Republican lawmakers with the goal of reaching a broad deficit reduction deal.
While the meal was not intended to be a negotiation, it was an opportunity for Obama to make clear he is willing to consider some difficult spending cuts that are unpopular with his fellow Democrats in Congress, the official said.
Those could include cuts to programs that include the Social Security pension system and Medicare for the elderly. Obama is due to discuss his other legislative priorities, including immigration reform, gun control and tackling climate change, at meetings with members of both political parties on Capitol Hill next week. The dinner may have been a chance to reverse some of the angry partisan rhetoric that has stood in the way of compromise in recent weeks. “The president greatly enjoyed the dinner and had a good exchange of ideas with the senators,” a senior administration official told reporters. Asked how the soiree had gone, Senator John McCain told journalists outside the hotel, “Just great. Fantastic.” Attendees included Senators Lindsey Graham, Bob Corker, and Kelly Ayotte and nine others.
Graham drew up the guest list, the White House said. The meetings between the president and lawmakers, whether or not they produce results, depart from what has been an at best a stand-offish relationship between Obama and Republicans in Congress. They suggest that Obama and Republicans are getting the message that public patience with Washington is wearing thin.
This has become apparent as Americans read of inconveniences they may soon confront at airports and elsewhere as a result of across-theboard cuts to the federal budget that kicked in on Friday after lawmakers and the White House failed to agree on an alternative. “This is the first indication in really a long time that the president is willing to exert leadership and bring people together and that’s exactly what needs to be done,” said Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who has spoken by phone in recent days with Obama. Republican doubters At the heart of the bitter US budget dispute are deep differences over how to rein in growth of the $16.7 trillion federal debt.
Obama wants to narrow the fiscal gap with spending cuts and tax hikes. Republicans do not want to concede again on taxes after doing so in negotiations over the “fiscal cliff” at the New Year. Despite the scheduled dinners and meetings and the vote on funding the government, few expect those differences to be resolved any time soon. Some Republicans remain skeptical of Obama’s overtures. “This president has been exceptional in his lack of consultation and outreach to Congress,” said John Cornyn of Texas, the second-ranking Senate Republican. Cornyn, like Collins, was not invited to dinner with Obama, but he warned that talk of tax increases would be unwelcome. “I don’t know if the purpose of the meeting is social or if he has an agenda.
But if it is about raising taxes, we’re done.” While Republicans have taken most of the beating in surveys in connection with the so-called sequestration, a Reuters/Ipsos online poll released on Wednesday showed 43 percent of people approve of Obama’s handling of his job, down 7 percentage points from February 19.

Texas Town Allows Guns For Teachers
HARROLD (TEXAS) (TIP): In this tiny Texas town, children and their parents don’t give much thought to safety at the community’s lone school – mostly because some of the teachers are carrying concealed weapons. In remote Harrold, the nearest sheriff’s office is 30 minutes away, and people tend to know – and trust – one another. So the school board voted to let teachers bring guns to school. “We don’t have money for a security guard, but this is a better solution,” Superintendent David Thweatt said.
“A shooter could take out a guard or officer with a visible, holstered weapon, but our teachers have master’s degrees, are older and have had extensive training. And their guns are hidden. We can protect our children.” In the aftermath of last week’s Connecticut elementary school shooting, lawmakers in a growing number of states – including Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota and Oregon – have said they will consider laws allowing teachers and school administrators to carry firearms at school.

Woman Arrested for Threatening Indian American Governor Haley
NEW YORK (TIP): Jennifer Phillips, a parent volunteer at Liberty Elementary School in Texas was arrested on Tuesday, December 4 for making threats against Indian American Governor Nikki Haley. The Governor was scheduled to visit the school at 10 am and a couple of hours prior to her visit Philips spoke to a staff member about harming Haley. Liberty Middle School Principal Lowell Haynes said, “I felt like it was something that I needed to notify law enforcement and let them handle it from there. It’s not up to me to decide if there’s intent there. I felt like that’s their job let them investigate and decide just turn it over to them”, reports Live5news (source WYFF).
According to police report the volunteer said to a counselor at the school, “I am going to smuggle a gun in and kill this governor.”Philip, who has been charged with threatening a public representative, was arrested even before Haley reached the venue. When asked about the incident, Haley said, “When you make decisions, you make some people happy and you make some people upset and there are some people who take it a little bit further and that is part of my job is to deal with it, but I know that I have a good team around me and I know that they are taking care of me so we deal with it the best we can.””It doesn’t slow me down. It doesn’t stop me,” Haley said. “If I got concerned every time there was a threat I would not move.”

British Petroleum agrees to record criminal penalties for US oil spill
NEW ORLEANS/WASHINGTON (TIP): BP Plc will pay $4.5 billion in penalties and plead guilty to felony misconduct in the Deepwater Horizon disaster, which caused the worst U.S. offshore oil spill ever. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called the deal a “critical step forward” but was adamant that it did not end the criminal investigation of the 2010 spill.
The settlement announced on Thursday includes a $1.256 billion criminal fine, the largest such levy in U.S. history. It was not, however, the “global” settlement some had hoped for, which would have also resolved the considerable federal civil claims against the company at the same time. “BP lied to me.
They lied to the people of the Gulf. And they lied to their shareholders, and they lied to all Americans,” said Representative Ed Markey, the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee who led investigations at the time of the spill. The government also indicted the two highestranking BP supervisors aboard the Deepwater Horizon during the disaster, charging them with 23 criminal counts including manslaughter. One man’s lawyer said his client was being turned into a scapegoat for the disaster.
The April 2010 explosion on the rig in the Gulf of Mexico killed 11 workers. The miledeep (1.6 km) Macondo oil well then spewed 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf over 87 days, fouling shorelines from Texas to Florida and eclipsing in severity the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska. The company said it would plead guilty to 11 felony counts related to the workers’ deaths, a felony related to obstruction of Congress and two misdemeanors.

Republicans Reconsider Immigration Laws Rethinking in GOP Camp after Hispanic Voters ensured Obama’s Win
WASHINGTON (TIP): House Speaker John Boehner and other Republicans in Congress said Thursday, November 8 that they want to consider broad changes to immigration laws next year, after an election in which Hispanic voters turned out in force to help President Barack Obama win a second term. Lawmakers and the White House said their most immediate goal was averting the so-called fiscal cliff, the budget cuts and tax increases set to kick in next year.
Once that is done, the White House and its allies in Congress have said, a major objective in 2013 is an immigration overhaul that was one of the president’s promises in his first campaign for the White House. Republican leaders say they are also ready to take up the issue. “We understand that we can’t keep kicking this can down the road,” an aide to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.), said Thursday. Legislation, the aide said, must include a broader plan for the estimated 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally. “We’re going to address the 11 million people,” the aide added. Mr. Boehner, in an interview Thursday with ABC News, said an immigration overhaul was on his agenda.
“This issue has been around far too long,” he said. “A comprehensive approach is long overdue, and I’m confident that the president, myself and others can find the common ground to take care of this issue once and for all.” A House Republican leadership aide said lawmakers had absorbed the election results and believe that Republican Mitt Romney’s tough stance on illegal immigration cost him Hispanic votes in the presidential election.
“But the details are very important and are going to be very hard,” the aide said about potential legislation. “It’s going to take a big commitment from both sides to try and resolve them.” White House officials have made quiet overtures to Republican senators, hoping to find allies in what may prove to be a major legislative battle of 2013. Advocates for revamping the immigration system are trying to arrange meetings with lawmakers, who return to Washington next week for the lame-duck session. They have asked to meet with GOP figures likely to influence the debate, including Mr. Cantor, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.).
One question is whether Republicans would support a process to grant legal status or citizenship to those in the country illegally, a move backed by most Democrats but which many Republicans criticize as amnesty. The Republican Party platform, adopted at the GOP convention this summer, opposes “any form of amnesty” for people who intentionally violate immigration law, saying that it “rewards and encourages more law breaking” and puts those seeking to enter the country legally at a disadvantage. Immigration proposals never advanced in the last Congress, with some Republicans saying they were waiting for Mr. Obama to show leadership and others saying they didn’t want to take up the issue. Democrats said they couldn’t find enough Republicans willing to work with them.
Republicans have often said that Congress should shore up border security before writing new laws concerning those in the country illegally. Exit polls of Tuesday’s election showed that Mr. Romney won less than 30% of the Hispanic vote, a factor in his defeat in Colorado, Virginia and likely in Florida, where he trailed by a margin small enough that the Associated Press on Thursday hadn’t yet declared a winner.
Mr. Romney had presented himself as an advocate of legal immigration but staked out a position to the right of his rivals during the Republican primaries, criticizing Texas Gov. Rick Perry for supporting in-state college tuition benefits for illegal immigrants and Newt Gingrich for saying some longtime illegal immigrants should gain legal status. He also called for “self-deportation” of illegal immigrants.

Sunita Williams voted for US Prez polls by absentee
NEW YORK (TIP): Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, currently in space and floating around in zero-gravity, voted for US Presidential polls by absentee ballot. Sunita, along with flight engineer Kevin Ford, exercised her franchise in July while stationed in Russia even before heading up to the station aboard Soyuz ships launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome.
The other four members of the station’s current Expedition 33 crew are all non-Americans – three Russian cosmonauts and one Japanese space ace.
For several years now, adventurers aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have been able to cast their votes via encrypted e-mail. Voting facility is available to those in the ISS with the help of to a digital ballot provided by Mission Control at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
The provision was envisaged by a 1997 Bill passed in the state of Texas, home to most of the NASA astronauts. The Bill allowed registered voters to digitally beam their ballots back down to Houston.
After filling out the form, “they send it back to Mission Control,” says NASA spokesman Jay Bolden. “It’s a secure ballot that is then sent directly to the voting authorities,” says Bolden.
Various US astronauts have cast their ballots from orbit in various past elections, and NASA has a procedure for such cases, brought in at the behest of Texan politicians keen to capitalize on publicity around space-going voters likely to be resident in the Houston area.
When the bill was passed, David Wolf, then aboard Russia’s Mir space station became the first astronaut to file his vote from space via encrypted email. Wolf, however, was voting in a local election. Walmart workers threaten to go on nationwide strike
WASHINGTON (TIP): Hundreds of Walmart workers rallied across dozen cities in the US, protesting against low wages and alleged unjust labour practices and have threatened to go on a nationwide strike on November 23, the ‘Black Friday’, which is said to be the busiest day for the company. According to news reports, workers held walkouts and marches in cities across the US including those in Dallas, San Diego, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington DC, Sacramento and even at its headquarters in Arkansas. The retail giant dismissed the protests as nothing more than union publicity stunts. But several union workers asserted that they were serious about going ahead with their strike call if their demands were not met.
According to “Making Change at Walmart” 100 Associates, travelled to the company’s corporate head quarters to call on it to stop trying to silence and retaliate against workers for speaking out for job improvements. “Walmart’s efforts to try to silence us is only building support among our co-workers, in calling for changes at the store. We will not be silenced, especially on ‘Black Friday’ when Walmart wants us to cut short the holiday with our families to help the company profit.
If Walmart wants workers fully committed to the stores on ’Black Friday’, Walmart needs to do more for us, the rest of the days of the year,” Colby Harris, who earns just USD 8.90 an hour after three years of working at Walmart in Lancaster, Texas, said in a press statement. Company’s spokesman Dan Fogleman in an interview to ABC news refuted the charges and said that majority of the company’s employees are against the idea of strike.
“They seem to recognise that Walmart has some of the best jobs in the retail industry – good pay, affordable benefits and the chance for advancement,” he said. Walmart and its practices have made the news a lot, lately. In mid-September, warehouse workers in Southern California were on a 15-day strike that included a sixday, 50-mile pilgrimage for safe jobs. Around the same time, hundreds of people marched in Dallas and San Diego, demanding better work conditions, the news channel said. Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in US, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On this day, most major retailers open extremely early, often at 4 a.m. or earlier and offer promotional sales to kick off the shopping season.

Shortly after the convention opened, delegates cheered their backing for the party’s new platform in an open voice vote.

Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, brought the gala into session with a stroke of the gavelAmong the changes found in the text of the party’s 2012 platform was the removal of language from the Middle East section referring to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
That message was replaced with a passage referring to the party’s “unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security” and Mr. Obama’s “steadfast opposition to any attempt to delegitimize Israel”.
The change prompted criticism from Republicans and Mitt Romney, who accuse Mr. Obama of “selling out” a key US ally.
Tuesday’s first session saw a series of Democratic governors, members of Congress, mayors and electoral candidates speak in support of Mr. Obama and his policies, most notably his much-criticized healthcare reform law.A video tribute to the late Senator Edward Kennedy included clips from his 1994 Senate debate with Mr. Romney, and independent Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee argued that his former party – the Republicans – had lost their way and had forfeited the label of conservative.
Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said the next president would set the tone for the next 40 years.

Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said, ” It is the president’s values that shape a future in which the middle class has hope.”“It will be the president’s leadership that determines how we as a nation meet the challenges that face the middle class. Julian Castro, the Latino Mayor of San Antonio, Texas, gave the keynote address immediately before Mrs. Obama

Julian Castro, the Latino Mayor of San Antonio, Texas, gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention 2012. He became the first Latino to deliver such a speech at a major political party’s national conventionThe Democratic gathering will see Mr. Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden formally re-nominated as the party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates on Wednesday.
Later that evening, there will be speeches from Elizabeth Warren, who is fighting Republican incumbent Scott Brown in a high-profile race for a Massachusetts Senate seat, and former President Bill Clinton.
The convention culminates on Thursday, September 6 with speeches from Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden.
Republican nominee Mitt Romney is expected to spend the week preparing for a series of debates with Mr. Obama.
The gala also offers the Democrats the chance to make a high-profile pitch to voters in North Carolina, a state that narrowly voted for Mr. Obama in 2008, but is now firmly up for grabs. As they did four years ago, the Democrats will take the event outside the convention centre for the president’s prime-time speech, taking over a 74,000-seater stadium in Charlotte for the final night of speeches – despite a poor weather forecast

Democratic convention calls for Obama re-election
CHARLOTTE, NC (TIP): The US Democratic Party launched its National Convention September 4 as it seeks to convince voters that President Barack Obama deserves a second term.
The chair of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, brought the gala into session with a strike of the gavel at 5 P.M. ET.Schultz, who is also the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, said that throughout the next three days, “we will demonstrate we need to keep President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden four more years.”
We will keep tabs on the convention all night. I’ll be joined by NPR’s Liz Halloran, and photographer Becky Lettenberger will bring us some of the sights. If Ted Strickland delivered the strongest attack on Mitt Romney, Gov. Deval Patrick delivered the best defense of Barack Obama.
“If we want to win elections in November and keep our country moving forward, if we want to earn the privilege to lead, it’s time for Democrats to stiffen our backbone and stand up for what we believe,” he said.
He added:”This is the president who delivered the security of affordable health care to every single American after 90 years of trying. This is the president who brought Osama bin Laden to justice, who ended the war in Iraq and is ending the war in Afghanistan. This is the president who ended “don’t ask, don’t tell” so that love of country, not love of another, determines fitness for military service. Who made equal pay for equal work the law of the land. This is the president who saved the American auto industry from extinction, the American financial industry from self-destruction, and the American economy from depression. Who added over 4.5 million private sector jobs in the last two-plus years, more jobs than George W. Bush added in eight.
“The list of accomplishments is long, impressive and barely told—even more so when you consider that congressional Republicans have made obstruction itself the centerpiece of their governing strategy. With a record and a vision like that, I will not stand by and let him be bullied out of office—and neither should you, and neither should you and neither should you.”
First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Bill Clinton are among those who will address the three-day jamboree in Time Warner Cable Arena, Charlotte, North Carolina.
A recent opinion poll shows Mr. Obama maintains a thin lead over the Republican nominee Mr. Mitt Romney. With November’s election looming, the president will aim to recapture the political spotlight over the next few days, after last week’s Republican convention. Throughout this campaign, there’s been a lot of talk about whether President Obama would be able to rekindle the kind of fervor he sparked in 2008.
Mr. Obama is expected to answer Republican attacks that his economic policies have failed, and present himself to voters as an experienced and caring alternative to Mr. Romney.Shortly after the convention opened, delegates cheered their backing for the party’s new platform in an open voice vote.

Mrs. Obama’s address at the end of Tuesday’s session will highlight the president’s character and praise his attributes as a father and husband. Her remarks will inevitably be compared and contrasted with those by would-be first lady Ann Romney, who gave a glowing tribute to her husband last week to the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida.
The Democratic convention is likely to highlight the party’s diversity, with young black and Hispanic party members set to deliver speeches.Julian Castro, the Latino Mayor of San Antonio, Texas, will give the keynote address immediately before Mrs. Obama. But a number of the country’s top Democratic figures will not attend.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is missing a Democratic convention for the first time in more than 40 years on account of ethical guidelines preventing cabinet heads from participating in political activities.
Nor will California Governor Jerry Brown and former Vice-President Al Gore be present, both citing personal commitments.A number of Democratic congressional candidates and incumbents have also declined to attend, as they are engaged in tough battles for election in November.

Organizers are working to ensure a full house for Mr. Obama’s speech. But organizers are concerned that thunderstorms forecast to hit Charlotte during the convention could keep people away.
Meanwhile, Republicans were quick to seize on a remark Mr. Obama made on Monday, in which he told a local Colorado news station that he would give himself an “incomplete” grade on the economy.
Vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan told CBS News that the US should be “bouncing out of” the recent recession. “We’re not creating jobs at near the pace we could,” he said.
A Gallup opinion poll on Monday suggested the convention had given the Republicans only the slightest of boosts, with 40% saying they were now more likely to vote for Mr. Romney but 38% of respondents describing themselves as less likely to.Mr. Obama maintained a lead over Mr. Romney of one percentage point – as he had done before the event
