The Social Reckoning: Aaron Sorkin’s film called ‘brutally important’

Director-screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning explores Big Tech accountability and the dark side of social media. Produced by Todd Black and Peter Rice, the political drama stars Jeremy Strong, Jeremy Allen White, and Mikey Madison. Adapted from The Wall Street Journal’s 2021 series The Facebook Files, it examines the fallout behind Meta’s flagship platform. Ahead of its theatrical release in India, early international reviews have positioned the film as a major awards contender.
Describing the release as “a true return to form for Aaron Sorkin and easily his best film,” critic Scott Menzel mentioned that the narrative serves as a stark reminder of “how far technology has come,” while praising the lead ensemble for delivering “fantastic” performances.
Echoing similar sentiments, commentator Jeff Conway called the project a “thoughtful, uncomfortable yet brutally important true story” about digital communication and the rise of misinformation, while highlighting Jeremy Strong’s “polarising” portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg.
Taking a more measured view, critic Daniel Howat termed it a “capable journalism drama about the social cancer we already know,” observing that while the story is informative rather than compelling, it is ultimately elevated by “a classic, rhythmic script from Sorkin” and solid lead performances.
Calling the film an “absolute horrifying retelling of Facebook weaponising hatred for profit,” reviewer Sage Surge argued that the drama merits Academy Award nominations across key categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Highlighting the ensemble dynamics, critic Leo Rydel described the release as a “riveting, slow-burn drama anchored superbly by incredible acting” from Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White, adding that Jeremy Strong and Bill Burr uphold a “gripping duel” on screen.
Dramatising the high-stakes clash between tech power and journalistic accountability, The Social Reckoning centres on whistle-blower Frances Haugen (Madison) and reporter Jeff Horwitz (White) as they expose internal corporate decisions at Meta, culminating in a tense standoff with Mark Zuckerberg (Strong).
Distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment India, The Social Reckoning is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release on October 9, 2026.
