The digital world has made it easier than ever to meet new people, build friendships and even find love. Here are some warning signs that suggest it may be time to take a closer look at the person behind the screen.
They Always Avoid Video or Phone Calls
You may have been chatting for weeks or even months, but whenever you suggest a phone conversation or video call, there is always an excuse.
Their camera is supposedly broken. They may claim they are too busy, surrounded by family members or experiencing technical problems. While occasional difficulties can happen to anyone, repeated excuses and a complete refusal to verify their identity should raise concerns.
They Ask You for Money
One of the biggest red flags is a request for money from someone you have never met in person. The request may come suddenly, or it may be carefully woven into an emotional story. They may claim to be facing a medical emergency, a financial crisis, a travel problem or some other unexpected difficulty.
Their Life Story Sounds Too Perfect—or Too Dramatic
Catfishers often create an idealised version of themselves. They may appear extraordinarily successful, attractive, romantic or emotionally perfect. Everything they say may seem designed to make you admire them or become emotionally attached.
Their Photos Look Suspiciously Professional
A profile filled only with flawless, studio-quality photographs can also be a warning sign, particularly if the person is unable or unwilling to share a casual, spontaneous picture when asked. The images may have been taken from another person’s social media account or elsewhere online.
