BUCHAREST (TIP): Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, Ambassador of India to Romania, presented his Letters of Credence to Ms. Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova, on 17 February 2026 at a solemn ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Chisinau. With the presentation of his Credentials, Ambassador Mohapatra has been concurrently accredited as Ambassador of India to the Republic of Moldova. The ceremony marked an important step in further strengthening India-Moldova relations at a time when both countries are focused on economic growth, energy security and deeper international partnerships.

In his meeting with President Sandu, Ambassador Mohapatra conveyed greetings from the leadership of India and reaffirmed India’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Moldova in areas of mutual priority. Discussions focused on infrastructure development, renewable energy, rail connectivity, port modernization, automobiles, IT and digital innovation. President Sandu appreciated the ongoing work of KEC International Ltd in constructing the 158 km, 400 kV overhead transmission line connecting Chisinau and Vulcanești. The project, which is nearing completion, represents a major contribution to Moldova’s energy resilience and its integration with the European electricity grid. Ambassador Mohapatra underlined that Indian companies operating abroad adhere to high standards of quality, transparency and timely delivery. He emphasized that India’s development partnerships are guided by sustainability, respect for local laws and a commitment to strengthening local capacity.
Ambassador Mohapatra also conveyed the growing interest of Indian investors in Moldova, including in renewable energy projects such as the proposed 170 MW wind power initiative, as well as in infrastructure, digital services and manufacturing. He noted that Indian companies seek transparent and predictable frameworks, sound feasibility assessments and mutually agreed financial models that ensure long-term viability. India’s approach aims to create partnerships that are commercially sound while contributing to the host country’s development objectives.
The Ambassador highlighted India’s rapid economic transformation and its emergence as one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world. He referred to India’s achievements in digital public infrastructure, renewable energy expansion, innovation and start-up ecosystems. He also noted the recent conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to significantly enhance trade, investment and technology cooperation between India and EU member states. As Moldova advances its European integration process, the new India-EU economic framework provides additional opportunities to deepen economic engagement, strengthen regional value chains and promote investor confidence.

Ambassador Mohapatra called on Prime Minister Mr. Alexandru Munteanu

During his visit, Ambassador Mohapatra called on Mr. Alexandru Munteanu, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova. The Prime Minister congratulated the Ambassador and expressed appreciation for India’s constructive role in Moldova’s development. He welcomed greater Indian participation in healthcare infrastructure, IT services and other sectors critical to Moldova’s modernization. Ambassador Mohapatra reiterated India’s readiness to support Moldova’s development priorities through responsible investment, technology partnerships and capacity building. Regional and global developments of mutual interest were also discussed.

Ambassador’s meeting with Defense Minister Mr. Anatolie Nosatîi

In his meeting with H.E. Mr. Anatolie Nosatîi, Minister of Defense, the two sides explored prospects for defense cooperation, training and capacity building. Ambassador Mohapatra highlighted India’s expanding defense manufacturing capabilities and its policy of responsible defense engagement based on transparency, mutual respect and international commitments. Both sides agreed to examine appropriate mechanisms for future cooperation.

Ambassador Mohapatra met with Minister for Internal Affairs Ms. Daniela Misail-Nichitin,

Ambassador Mohapatra also met Ms. Daniela Misail-Nichitin, Minister of Internal Affairs. Discussions focused on collaboration in training programs, digital governance, modernization of public services and institutional capacity building. The Ambassador shared India’s experience in large-scale digital transformation and expressed readiness to share best practices in areas such as digital identity systems and e-governance. He also raised certain consular matters concerning Indian nationals, including visa-related issues and recognition of official documents. The Minister assured us that these matters would be examined in a constructive manner.

Ambassador met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Mihai Popsoi

Ambassador Mohapatra met Mr. Mihai Popșoi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. The discussions covered renewable energy, infrastructure, connectivity, tourism, education, people-to-people exchanges and enhanced civil aviation links. Both sides expressed their shared commitment to elevating the partnership and maintaining regular high-level dialogue. The Minister appreciated the contribution of KEC International Ltd to Moldova’s energy infrastructure and emphasized the importance of sustained economic cooperation.

During his visit, Ambassador Mohapatra also interacted with representatives of KEC International Ltd to review the progress of the transmission line project and understand operational aspects. He reaffirmed the Government of India’s support for Indian enterprises contributing responsibly and effectively to Moldova’s development priorities. Ambassador Mohapatra also held interactions with Ambassadors of European countries in Chisinau to exchange perspectives on developments in Moldova and explore areas of mutual interest.
India and Moldova share friendly relations rooted in mutual respect, democratic values and shared aspirations for sustainable development.
