SENSEX, RUPEE SURGE ON DIESEL PRICE HIKE

MUMBAI (TIP): The Sensex rose more than 2 percent to new seven-month highs on Sept 14 after the government announced a hike in diesel prices and after the Federal Reserve announced a new asset purchase program. State-owned oil companies such as Bharat Petroleum Corp led the rally after India raised the price of heavily subsidised diesel on Thursday to rein in its fiscal deficit.

Lenders such as State Bank of India also rose on expectations the government’s fiscal consolidation steps would increase chances of a rate cut from the central bank, which reviews policy next on Monday. Investors are also looking ahead at August inflation data due later in the day, as well as the government’s weekly cabinet meeting, which is expected to discuss opening up the sector to foreign direct investment.

“Fuel price announcements coupled with positive global news flows will provide another boost to markets. This rally should continue in near term,” Jagannadham Thunuguntla, Head of research at SMC Investments and Advisors Limited.

The Sensex rose 2.1 percent as of 10.34am, after earlier rising to its highest intraday level since February 22, and headed for its eighth consecutive winning session.

    Nifty rose 1.97 percent

Oil stocks led the rally after India raised diesel prices by 5 rupees a litre, a 14 percent increase when taxes are included. Bharat Petroleum Corp rose 1.9 percent, while Indian Oil Corp rose 1.6 percent. Lenders gained on expectations the fuel price hike would increase the prospect of rate cuts, given Reserve Bank of India officials were seen as wanting the government to shore up its finances before considering easing monetary policy.

State Bank of India rose 4.4 percent, while ICICI Bank rose 4.4 percent. Shares in software services exporters and metals rose after the Fed launched an aggressive stimulus program, saying it would pump $40 billion into the U.S. economy each month until it saw a sustained upturn in the weak jobs market.

Tata Steel rose 4 pct, while Hindalco Industries rose 5.4 percent, while Infosys rose 1.9 pct. Airlines rose on hopes that the sector would benefit from a potential opening up of the sector. SpiceJet extended gains for a third day, up 6.5 percent.

Rupee rallies to 2-1/2 month high

The Indian rupee rose to its strongest level in two-anda- half months on Friday after the government raised diesel prices to lower its subsidy burden and after the Federal Reserve announced new aggressive monetary stimulus. The partially convertible rupee was trading at 54.67/68 per dollar as of 0435 GMT, 1.4 percent above its close of 55.43/44 on Thursday. The unit rose as high as 54.64 earlier in the session, its strongest since July 4. The gains if sustained would be the rupee’s biggest single-day percentage gain in two months.

Two other large PE deals that took place during the month were SBI Macquire Private Equity’s $150 million investment in Ashok Concessions and Nasper and Tiger Global’s $150 million investment in Flipkart, which contributed over 16 per cent of the total deal value.

A break-up of the deal activity indicates that 68 per cent of PE investments were focused on the IT and ITeS sector, while eight per cent went to infrastructure management and another eight per cent on travel and tourism. The top sector for M&A was real estate, accounting for 49 per cent of the deal value, followed by pharma, healthcare and biotech with a 20 per cent share. While 11 per cent of the M&A deal value was enjoyed by the IT and ITeS sector, the shipping and ports and manufacturing sector cornered four per cent each

  • MOVIE REVIEW TO ROME WITH LOVE

MOVIE REVIEW TO ROME WITH LOVE

Cast: Woody Allen, Judy Davis, Alec Baldwin, PenelopeCruz, Jesse Eisenberg
    Direction: Woody Allen
    Genre: Comedy
    Duration: 1 hour 52 minutes

    STORY:

When Rome is the place we’re talking about, tales are bound to be plenty, both of those living there, as well as those travelling out there.

    MOVIE REVIEW:

Now here is a movie from none other than the maker of the all-time favorite Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen. He not only directs To Rome with Love; he also happens to be the man behind the script (Woody Allenis the writer too)… and he also stars in this movie. And disappoint he does not at least when it comes to his performance. In fact, To Rome with Love scores purely for the huge star cast, and then for the performances put forth by the same cast. The four sub-plots involve

a young small-town Italian couple who arrive in Rome right after their marriage. The duo manages to give you an ample dose of adult humor.

    Special mention:

Penelope Cruz who not only looks her glam self, but has the whole of Rome wanting more of Anna (read her).

Then there is a retired opera director (Woody Allen) and his wife ( Judy Davis) who visit Rome to meet their future son-in-law… and eventually end up talent hunting. Now this is the couple that gives you maximum food for thought… and laughter

Next is a famous architect ( Alec Baldwin) who travels down memory lane, literally, courtesy a young architecture student (Jesse Eisenberg) living in Rome, followed by an ordinary citizen of Rome (Roberto Benigni) who one fine morning finds himself as part of the crème de la crème.

Unfortunately, it is the script — too many characters, too many sub plots, too many unexplained fund as /stories– that leaves you rather disappointed. That’s when you realize To Rome with Love is no Woody Allen’s Oscar-winning (Midnight in Paris, Manhattan or Hanna hand her sisters) effort… an effort wherein he managed

The software services provider, in which vehicle manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra holds about 48 per cent stake, intends to work along with companies readying to launch the services in the country.

Long Term Evolution (LTE), commonly called 4G, is a standard for high-speed data communication for mobile phones and data networks. In India, 4G (which is 4-10 times faster than 3G) licences were issued to six operators, with four of them actively looking to deploy the services.

    Will Support Operators

“We will support the operators to deploy the services. We have been working with telecom operators in many countries, including the major ones, and we intend to provide this expertise here in India,” Tech Mahindra Head of Mobility Business Jagdish Mitra said.

However, Mitra declined to names the companies, citing confidential clauses. He also did not disclose the investments Tech Mahindra has committed for the technology, nor the expected returns. Tech Mahindra has set up a device lab in Delhi. It has also set up an application and network integration lab each in Pune and Bangalore. Tech Mahindra would provide system and network integration services, security services and configuring of new and emerging devices for 4G services.

    Other Players

Bharti Airtel, the country’s largest telecom operator, has already launched 4G services in two circles, Kolkata and Bangalore. Other three major players — Reliance Industries, Tikona Digital Networks and Aircel — are expected to launch the services by this yearend, or in early 2013.

INDIA FUMES OVER STEEP DIESEL PRICE HIKE

PATNA /HYDERABAD/AMRITSAR (TIP): People across the country have expressed outrage following the central government’s decision to hike diesel price by five rupees per litre, and restricted sales of subsidized cooking fuel or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to six per consumer annually.

“We are already reeling under high inflationary prices, specially the service class and lower income group is completely distressed. High income level groups or politicians will not get affected but the middle class and lower middle class should just die because of the inflationary prices,” said Amarendra Kumar, a car owner in Patna.

Mohammad Ibrahim, a daily wage earner in Hyderabad, expressed the agony of millions of families who live hand to mouth and would directly get affected by the sharp rise in diesel price. “The fuel hike is an addition to the problems of daily wage earners.

People who run families are facing a lot of problems ….. we have young children and need to save every month,” said Ibrahim, owner of a motorbike and bread earner for a family of six persons. Diesel fed vehicle owners feel that the government’s decision is unwarranted . “We can’t help it, buying diesel is a necessity. Since they have increased the fuel price we have to make do with it. If the government hikes prices of diesel and petrol we have to spend more from our pockets,” said Rahul Kapoor, owner of an SUV in Amritsar.

The Government has increased the price of diesel by five rupees per litre. However, there has been no increase in prices of petrol and PDS kerosene. The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), in its meeting chaired by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh yesterday also decided to restrict the supply of subsidized LPG cylinders to each consumer to six per year.

  • COALGATE GOVT PANEL RECOMMENDS DEALLOCATION OF 4 MINES

COALGATE GOVT PANEL RECOMMENDS DEALLOCATION OF 4 MINES

New Delhi (TIP): The inter ministerial group (IMG) on coal blocks allocation has recommended de-allocation of four mines allotted to private firms and encashment of bank guarantee of three others on the ground of non-development of mines within a prescribed time.

“The IMG, which reviewed eight cases on Sept 12 has recommended deallocation of four coal blocks including two alloted to private firm Field Mining and Ispat,” a coal ministry official, who did not wish to be named, said. Field Mining and Ispat was slapped a show cause along with 58 others for delay in development of Chinora and Warora Southern Part coal blocks in Maharashtra.

This is the first recommendation by the IMG ever since controversy broke out over the allocation of coal blocks after the recent CAG report that criticised the government for allotting them in a non-transparent manner. The IMG had scrutinised eight cases on Wednesday in a marathon six-hour meeting out of a total 29 reviewed by it last week in the context of why production had not started within the prescribed timeline. It had heard representatives of 29 coal block allottees on September 6, 7 and 8 out of of 58 allocations under focus.

Meanwhile, coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal told reporters that he was hopeful that the IMG would submit its first report by September 17, two days after the September 15 deadline set earlier. “I am hopeful that IMG will submit its report by September 17,” Jaiswal said.

  • India scores a perfect ton in space

India scores a perfect ton in space

Bangalore (TIP): An Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) rocket on Sept 9 successfully put into orbit two foreign satellites, making the space agency’s 100th mission a grand success.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was present at the spaceport at Sriharikota and congratulated ISRO scientists for the successful launch.

He said that while this was the 100th mission carried out by ISRO, the year also happens to be the 50th year of India’s space programme.

The PM recalled his stint as a member of the Space Commission when he had the “honour” of working alongside the then ISRO Chairman Satish Dhawan whose contribution has been acknowledged by ISRO by naming the space centre at Sriharikota after him.

At 9.53 am, which was two minutes behind the scheduled time, ISRO’s workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C21 (PSLV-C21), 44m tall and weighing around 230 tonnes, hurtled itself towards the skies with the two satellites – SPOT 6, a 720-kg French earth observation satellite, and Proiteres, a 15-kg Japanese micro-satellite.

With a rich orange flame at its tail, PSLV-C21 ascended amid cheers of ISRO scientists and the media team assembled at the launch centre.

Scientists at ISRO’s new mission control room anxiously watched their computer screens as the rocket escaped the earth’s gravitational pull.

At around 18 minutes into the flight, the rocket delivered SPOT 6 into its intended polar orbit at an altitude of 655 km. A few seconds later, it was the turn of Proiteres.

This was what the mission was all about and scientists at mission control were visibly relieved and started clapping at the successful ejection of the two satellites.

Manmohan Singh, who also complimented EADS Astrium of France and Osaka Institute of Technology of Japan for the successful launch of their satellites, asserted that the fund spent on the space programme was money well spent.
SPOT 6 is the heaviest foreign satellite to be carried by a PSLV since 1999 when ISRO started launching satellites of foreign agencies. Proiteres will study the powered flight of a small satellite by an electric thruster and observe Japan’s Kansai district with a high-resolution camera.

On the two-minute delay in the rocket’s lift-off, ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan said it was to avoid possible collision with space debris. He said ISRO would set up a Multi-Object Tracking Radar (MOTR) to track space debris and time its rocket launches accordingly.

Till date, ISRO has successfully launched 27 foreign satellites with its PSLV rockets and today’s mission took the tally to 29.

  • Sonia may ask ‘tainted’ Sahai, Jaiswal to go

Sonia may ask ‘tainted’ Sahai, Jaiswal to go

NEW DELHI (TIP): As the stink from ‘Coalgate’ rises, the continuation of tourism minister Subodh Kant Sahai and coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal looks uncertain, with the Congress leadership considering strong measures to contain the fallout from the scam.

Although the leadership continues to resist the allegation of a scam, it appears to have come around to the view that persisting with the duo may have become politically untenable. Simultaneously , the leadership is also considering its options vis-a-vis party men like Vijay Darda, Naveen Jindal and former minister of state for coal Santosh Bagrodia who have been enveloped by the widening shadow of the scam.

The Congress leadership seems to realize that the involvement of party members in the controversial allocation of coal blocks has thickened the perception of collusion between the government and the allotters of blocks, handing opposition a stick to beat it with. The sudden spike in speculation about their political fate coincided with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s return from abroad.

Sonia , who had gone for a routine medical check up, is likely to hold deliberations with her colleagues as part of the larger restructuring she has planned for the government and the party this month. Sahai had written to PM Manmohan Singh recommending allocation of coal blocks to a company, SKS Ispat and Power, which had his younger brother as one of its directors .

The company in question got blocks the very next day, and the tourism minister has not been able to shake off the charge of conflict of interest. A clear case of conflict of interest has not been established against Jaiswal yet, but the leadership seems to feel that he has not been able to effectively explain why coal blocks continued to be allocated on his charge, and well into 2010. His explanation that he was merely following through on the decisions taken by the screening committee before he got charge of the ministry has not been found to be convincing .

There is also a wariness of the unfolding revelations on links of government functionaries with the allottees. Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Darda has been named in CBI’s first set of FIRs into Coalgate. Although the agency has not charged him yet under the Prevention of Corruption Act, his proximity to Manoj Jayaswal, one of the prime beneficiaries, is seen as a political vulnerability for the Congress. Jindal, whose Jindal Power Limited was allocated several coal blocks, has been in the opposition’s line of fire.

Modi challenges ‘scared’ Rahul to come and campaign in Gujarat

VALSAD (TIP): Amid growing speculation of a Narendra Modi versus Rahul Gandhi electoral battle in 2014, the Gujarat chief minister indirectly challenged Rahul to come and campaign in the state. “Now Congress says Rahul is not coming to Gujarat. Why? People of the state and I want to know the reason. Does he think Gujarat is so bad that he won’t tour the state?

” Modi said, addressing a rally in Mota Pondha village in Valsad district of south Gujarat. Modi’s jibe comes at a time when the Congress does not want to take any chances to pit the 42-year-old party general secretary against the BJP strongman on his own turf, lest he suffer the ignominy similar to the Uttar Pradesh debacle and further dent is already waning. Modi addressed a series of rallies in south Gujarat as a part of his monthlong Swami Vivekanand Yuva Vikas Yatra.

In Pardi town near Vapi, BJP leader Smriti Irani also took potshots at Rahul saying, “How can he come to Gujarat when he has completely lost face after Congress’s drubbing in Uttar Pradesh elections?” Addressing a rally in Valsad, Modi threw an open challenge to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi. “I am ready for any contest,” he said.

Modi was also severe in his criticism of Congress’s slogan ‘Change the direction to change your condition’ saying that the party’s only direction was “dynasty rule”. “Only one family gets importance…. If they make someone Prime Minister, he has to go to the family before taking any decision,” he said. “Congress’s ‘direction’ is of nepotism, spreading communalism, divisive politics and not fulfilling promises,” he alleged.

  • GANESH Chaturthi

    GANESH Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the birthday of Lord Ganesh (Ganesha),the god of wisdom and prosperity on the fourth day of the moons bright fortnight, or period from new moon in the lunar month of Bhadrapada. The celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi continue for five, seven, or ten days. Some even stretch it to twenty one days, butten the most popularly celebrated. In the tradition of the right hand path the first day is the most important. In the left hand path tradition the final day is most important.

Ganesha is the god of wisdom and prosperity and is invoked before the beginning of any auspicious work by the Hindus. It is believed that for the fulfillment of one’s desires, his blessing is absolutely necessary.According to the mythology, he is the son of Shiva and Parvati, brother of Kartikeya – the general of the gods, Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and Saraswati-the goddess of learning. There are numerous stories in Hindu mythology, associated with the birth of this elephant-headed god, whose vehicle is the Mooshak or rat and who loves Modaks (droplet shaped Indian sweet).

Legend has it that Parvati created Ganesha out of the sandalwood dough that she used for her bath and breathed life into him. Letting him stand guard at the door she went to have her bath. When her husband, Shiva returned, the child who had never seen him stopped him. Shiva severed the head of the child and entered his house. Parvati, learning that her son was dead, was distraught and asked Shiva to revive him. Shiva cut off the head of an elephant and fixed it on the body of Ganesha.

Another tale tells of how one day the Gods decided to choose their leader and a race was to be held between the brothers- Kartikeya and Ganesh. Whoever took three rounds of the earth first would be made the Ganaadhipati or the leader. Kartikeya seated on a peacock as his vehicle, started off for the test. Ganesh was given a rat, which moved swiftly. Ganesh realised that the test was not easy, but he would not disobey his father. He reverently paid obeisance to his parents and went around them three times and thus completed the test before Kartikeya. He said, ” my parents pervade the whole universe and going around them, is more than going round the earth.” Everybody was pleasantly surprised to hear Ganesha’s logic and intelligence and hence he came to be known as the Ganaadhipati or leader, now referred to as Ganpati.

There is also a story behind the symbolic snake, rat and the singular tusk. During one of his birthdays, His mother,
Parvati, cooked for him twenty-one types of delicious food and a lot of sweet porridge. Ganesha ate so much that even
his big belly could not contain it. Mounting his little mouse, he embarked on his nightly rounds. His mouse suddenly stumbled upon seeing a huge snake. To adjust His belly, Ganesha put the snake on as a belt around his stomach. All of a sudden, he heard laughter emanating form the sky.

He looked up and saw the moon mocking him. Ganesha infuriated, broke off one of his tusks and hurled it at the moon. Parvati, seeing this, immediately cursed the moon that whoever looks at it on Ganesh Chaturthi will be accused of a wrong doing. The symbology behind the mouse and snake and Ganesha’s big belly and its relationship to the moon on his birthday is highly philosophic. The whole cosmos is known to be the belly of Ganesha. Parvati is the primordial energy. The seven realms above, seven realms below and seven oceans, are inside the cosmic belly of Ganesha, held together by the cosmic energy (kundalini ) symbolized as a huge snake which Ganesha ties around Him. The mouse is nothing but our ego. Ganesha, using the mouse as a vehicle, exemplifies the need to control our ego. One who has controlled the ego has Ganesha consciousness or God consciousness.

    Celebrations

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated the states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and many other parts of India. Started by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, to promote culture and nationalism, the festival was revived by Lokmanya Tilak (a freedom fighter) to spread the message of freedom struggle and to defy the British who had banned public assemblies. The festival gave the Indians a feeling of unity and revived their patriotic spirit and faith. This public festival formed the background for political leaders who delivered speeches to inspire people against the Western rule. The festival is so popular that the preparations begin months in advance.

Ganesha statues installed in street corners and in homes, and elaborate arrangements are made for lighting, decoration, mirrors and the most common of flowers. Poojas (prayer services) are performed daily. The artists who make the idols of Ganesh compete with each other to make bigger and more magnificent and elegant idols. The relevantly larger ones are anything from 10 meters to 30 meters in height. These statues are then carried on decorated floats to be immersed in the sea after one, three, five, seven and ten days. Thousands of processions converge on the beaches to immerse the holy idols in the sea. This procession and immersion is accompanied by drum- beats, devotional songs and dancing.

It is still forbidden to look at the moon on that day as the moon had laughed at Ganesha when he fell from his vehicle, the rat. With the immersion of the idol amidst the chanting of “Ganesh Maharaj Ki Jai!” (Hail Lord Ganesh). The festival ends with pleas to Ganesha to return the next year with chants of “Ganpati bappa morya, pudcha varshi laukar ya” (Hail Lord Ganesh, return again soon next year.

Diplomat involved in 1999 hijack: Terrorist

SRINAGAR/JAMMU (TIP): Intelligence sources called the arrest of Mehrajuddin Wani alias Javed Dand —one of the terrorists who arranged logistics for the Kandahar hijackers—a big catch, and the terror suspect appeared to conform to that billing when he, according to the J&K police, disclosed that the diplomat of an unspecified embassy (in Nepal) was closely involved in the 1999 hijacking plot.

“We are investigating all this,” said Dilbagh Singh, IGP of Jammu. Intelligence sources in Delhi said that he could shed new light on hijackers, who had killed one young Indian traveler, Rupen Katyal, and how they managed to pull off the audacious hijacking. The hijacking, in which the then Taliban regime had colluded, resulted in the release of three terrorists, including Maulana Masood Azhar, Mustaq Ahmed Zargar and Omar Saeed Sheikh, in exchange of hostages of the ill-fated aircraft.

Azhar had set up one of deadliest terror outfits Jaish-e- Mohammed (JeM), while Sheikh ended up kidnapping and murdering the Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl in Pakistan in 2002. The hijacking, which dealt a heavy blow to BJP’s “tough-on-terror” credentials, embittered the already strained ties with Pakistan that allowed Azhar and Sheikh to roam in full public view and carry on with their anti-India activities.

The IGP said that police, acting on specific intelligence inputs, launched a search operation and arrested Mehrajuddin – a close associate of United Jihad Council chief Syed Salahuddin as well as underworld don Dawood Ibrahim – on Jammu-Srinagar highway while he was travelling from Nepal to Kashmir on Wednesday night. “We suspect that his services have been used (in the hijacking).

He was there (in Nepal) when the aircraft was hijacked in 1999,” Singh said. Mehrajuddin, undergoing treatment for brain tumour in Nepal, was on his way to Sopore to meet his family members and relatives. Police suspect that Mehrajuddin — once an ordinary tailor at Nigeen Bagh in Sopore — has strong links with Pakistan’s ISI, and is also believed to be engaged in raising funds for terror activities. He is also suspected to be involved in smuggling weapons, ammunition and fake currency into India with the help of the diplomat

Gandhi’s life now in a graphic novel

AHMEDABAD (TIP): Documentary filmmaker Jahnavi Prasada and illustrator Girish Arora, a graduate of the National Institute for Design, have joined hands to create a graphic version of Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography ‘The Story Of My Experiments With Truth’ — the first in the world.

The graphic novel is in the final stages of review and is being vetted by Gandhian scholars. “We chose the graphic novel form because it has a strong visual connect — the person in the autobiography is brought to life.

This art form is the most poignant way of telling complex and important stories,” says Prasada, who along with Arora, has been working on the project since the last 18 months. The graphic adaptation runs into more than 200 pages and tries to visually engage Gandhi with today’s youth.

The book will capture Gandhi’s principles in political life, the use of civil disobedience only to remind adversaries of their common humanity and also his quest for truth from childhood days till his death. The only other graphic novel on Gandhi was by a Japanese artist Kazuki Ebine in ‘manga’ format.

“I was inspired after reading the graphic novel on Babasahed Ambedkar recently and learnt so much about him. It was then that I decided on making a graphic novel on Gandhiji,” Prasada adds.

Aseem Trivedi, charged with Sedition, joins the list of greats

MUMBAI (TIP): The arrest of cartoonist Aseem Trivedi, who was charged with sedition for his ‘offensive’ cartoons, has once again brought into focus the contentious law under the Indian Penal Code.

Sedition as defined under IPC Section 124 A says, “Whoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards the government established by law in India, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, to which fine may be added, or with imprisonment which may extend to three years, to which fine may be added, or with fine.”

Interestingly, India’s first prime minister had described this section as “highly objectionable and obnoxious”.
Several Indians in the past have been charged under this act. Prominent freedom fighters charged with sedition law include Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Mohandas Gandhi.

Section 124A was introduced by the British colonial government in 1870 when it felt the need for a specific section to deal with the offence.

  • Rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur

    Rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur

The Jewish community celebrates Rosh Hashanah on September 17 and 18 and Yom Kippur on September 26.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are considered High Holy Days in the Jewish religion. Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur is also known as the Day of Atonement.

These two days and the days in between are known as the Days of Awe or the Days of Repentance. Rosh Hashanah is a time to start thinking about the mistakes of the past year and resolutions for the next year.

One fun thing to do on this day is to eat apples and honey for a sweet new year. Another popular thing to do is called Tashlikh. People walk to a place where there is flowing water and empty their pockets into the water.

This action symbolizes casting away a person’s sins. During the time of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur a common practice is to seek out people that one has wronged during the past year. A person asks for forgiveness and, if possible, rights the wrong. Reconciliations with other people must take place before Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is considered the most important day in the Jewish year. It is on this day that God’s judgments in the Book of Life are sealed. This day is one of fasting, repentance, and prayer. Yom Kippur ends at nightfall with the sounding of the shofar.

Wisconsin gurdwara shooting: Harvard University to host langar

NEW YORK (TIP): Harvard University will host a first-of-its-kind langar (community kitchen) on Monday, September 17. It is organized by India-born chef Vikas Khanna, as a tribute to Sikh worshippers who died in the recent Wisconsin gurdwara shooting.

Professors and students will sit Indian style on a mat and be served maah ki daal, gobhi mattar, roti, kheer and halwa by the 41-year-old Michelin-starred chef – an Amritsar boy who now runs the upscale Manhattan restaurant Junoon.
“I want to show the generosity of Sikhism and its great tradition of langars. It’s an amazing story of mankind and sharing. I hope this event will spread awareness,” says Khanna, who follows the faith.

He says he’s been feeling low since the August 5 hate crime that left six dead. “We haven’t reached out to enough people to tell the story of universal brotherhood through Sikhism. We have to remind people of our heritage, and that is what I am trying to achieve.”

At the university, the chef will also screen his film named after Guru Nanak’s message of Saacha Sauda (true business), from where the concept of langar comes.

“We are proud to support this message of compassion at Harvard University. It’s great to be introduced to the great Indian traditions of food, religion and culture. It strengthens inter-faith understanding,” said Ali Asani, professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and Cultures.

Third front will take shape after ‘14 polls: Mulayam

KOLKATA (TIP): Indicating that he is keeping all his options open for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday announced that his party would go to polls alone and would play a key role in formation of the next government at the Centre. He said the two national parties, Congress and BJP, were fast losing ground and that a non-BJP, non-Congress third front would take shape after the elections.

“The third front has always taken shape after elections,” Mulayam said while citing past examples. When asked if he was eyeing the Prime Minister’s post, the SP chief said he had no ambition for the top job. “Such questions usually come from those who don’t want to see a third front coming up,” he said with a laugh.

“As of now, we have decided to go to polls alone. We have had no talks with any political party for a prepoll alliance,” he added. Talking to reporters after the party’s national executive in Kolkota, Mulayam blamed the Congress government’s “misrule” for price hike and corruption but at the same time said the SP would not field any candidate against Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha elections as a “thanksgiving gesture” in return for the Congress not putting up any candidate against his daughter-in-law Dimple in Kannauj by-polls.

Unlike other SP leaders, Mulayam refrained from commenting on whether Rahul Gandhi was PM material. “I offer my best wishes to Rahul on whatever he does in politics,” he said. However, he skirted queries on whether the SP would give a walkover to Rahul in the LS polls. When asked about Congress’s allegation that he was unreliable, a visibly agitated Mulayam said, “I am known for keeping my word.”

‘Akhilesh vs Rahul’ move worries Cong With Mulayam shattering the working relationship between Congress and SP with his remarks, rattled Congress sees SP as moving to cast the next election as a ‘Rahul vs Akhilesh’ battle. By focusing on Rahul, Mulayam may want to show his constituency that he was playing for central sweepstakes, a gambit to consolidate the support base. The 2014 polls will be his last shot at the top post.

WORRIED GOVERNMENT MOVES TO BLOCK ANTI-ISLAM FILM

NEW DELHI (TIP): Apprehending disturbances over a controversial anti-Islam movie that sparked massive anti- US protests in Libya, Egypt and Yemen, the government on September 13 asked Google to block 11 URLs of the popular video site YouTube containing objectionable excerpts from the film.

The US-based Google, which owns YouTube, is likely to ban these URLs soon. “A request to Google was made acting on the request of the Jammu & Kashmir government which forwarded a court order for getting those web pages removed as soon as possible,” said a home ministry official. He said the request had been sent by the department of telecommunication through the director general of Computer Emergency Response Team India (CERT-In) for immediate action.

As reports came in of Afghanistan and Pakistan also blocking access to these sites, Google in a statement said, “We work hard to create a community everyone can enjoy and which also enables people to express different opinions. This can be a challenge because what’s OK in one country can be offensive elsewhere. This video — which is widely available on the Web — is clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube. However, given the very difficult situation in Libya and Egypt we have temporarily restricted access in both countries.” Government has already beefed up security at the US embassy and four of its consulates — Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. The five US diplomatic missions are being provided round-the-clock security
