  • GANESH CHATURTHI

    GANESH CHATURTHI

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the major festivals celebrated in India with great enthusiasm and devotion. The festival marks the birthday of Lord Ganesha; the Lord of knowledge, wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. The festival is also known as Vinayak Chaturthi or Vinayak Chavithi.

This day, observed as one of the most auspicious in the Hindu religion, is widely celebrated especially in the state of Maharashtra.

    History

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi finds its origin in the Maratha reign, with Chatrapati Shivaji starting the festival. The belief lays in the story of the birth of Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Although there are various stories attached to his birth, the one most relevant is shared here. Goddess Parvati was the creator of Ganpati.

She, in the absence of Lord Shiva, used her sandalwood paste to create Ganesha and put him to guard while she had gone for bathing. While she was gone, Lord Shiva got into a fight with Ganesha as he did not allow him to enter, as per his mother`s orders. Enraged, Lord Shiva cut off Ganesha`s head. When Parvati saw this sight, she took the form of Goddess Kali and threatened to destroy the world. This worried everyone and they requested Lord Shiva to find a solution and calm the rage of Goddess Kali.

Shiva then ordered all his followers to immediately go and find a child whose mother has her back towards her child in negligence and bring his head. The first child seen by the followers was that of an elephant and they, as ordered, cut his head and brought to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva immediately placed the head on Ganesha`s body and brought it to life again. The rage of Maa Kali was calmed and Goddess Parvati was overwhelmed, once again. All the Lords blessed Ganesha and the day is today celebrated for the same reason.

    Celebrations

Ganesh Chaturthi preparations commence from almost a month before the festival. The celebrations last for around ten days (from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to Ananta Chaturdashi). On the first day a clay idol of Lord Ganesha is installed in homes. Homes are decorated with flowers.

Temples witness the visit of large number of devotees. Poojas are performed and bhajans are chanted. Often, families gather together to celebrate the festival. Localities organize and arrange for pandals and install large idols of Lord Ganesha to celebrate the festival with friends and family. On the final day of the celebrations, the idol of Lord Ganesha is taken on the streets. People exhibit their enthusiasm and joy in the form of dancing and singing on the streets along with the idol.

The idol is finally immersed in the river or sea. The day witnesses a large number of devotees expressing their happiness and offering their prayers.

    Ganesh Chaturthi Pujan

Ganesha pujan starts from installing a clay idol of Lord Ganesha in your home. Various dishes are cooked for offering (bhog). The idol is given a bath with pure water and then decorated with flowers. Jyoti is lite and then the aarti begins. Various bhajans, and mantras are chanted at this time.

It is believed that chanting the mantras with complete devotion brings life to the idol. It is also believed that during this period, Ganesha visits the home of his devotees and bring prosperity and good fortune with him. For the same reason the day is observed as a very auspicious day.

    Festival Dishes

Although there are a large number of sweets offered to Lord Ganesha during the pujan, but Modak is known to be the lord`s favourite sweet and is therefore one of the main dishes made on this day.

Other dishes include Karanji, ladu, barfi and pede.

Why are the Ganesh Statues Immersed in Water at the End of the Festival?

Hindus worship idols, or statues, of their gods because it gives them a visible form to pray to. They also recognize that the universe is in a constant state of change. Form eventually gives away to formlessness. However, the energy still remains. The immersion of the statues in the ocean, or other bodies of water, and subsequent destruction of them serves as a reminder of this belief.

  • FIRST PRAKASH DIVAS OF SHRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB

FIRST PRAKASH DIVAS OF SHRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB

Guru Arjan Dev Ji installed Adi Granth at Harmandir Sahib Ji 1604. Baba Buddha Ji was the First Granthi and Bhai Gurdas Ji completed Adi Granth Sahib Ji as dictated by Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in 1604. Later Guru Gobind Singh Ji adds Shabads of Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji and then in 1708, Adi Granth became Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Eternal Guru of Sikhs as was declared by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

The Guru Granth Sahib is indeed unique in its thought, literary expression and the message it continues to communicate centuries after it was written. Exalted thought needs to be transported on the vehicle of language to reach the masses. Poetic expression lifts prose to a higher plane. When verse and music meld, their beauty and sweetness makes mind transcend the humdrum of rational existence. This is divine love, passion pure expressed poetically; set to select 31 ragas…. The thought is egalitarian, expressed in a language that can be lucidly understood by the masses and the compositions are poetic, composed in the traditional Indian meters.

As Bhai Kahan Singh’s Mahankosh tells us, the Guru Granth Sahib contains the bani (sacred compositions, literally utterances) of six Gurus, 15-non Sikh bhagats (saints) whose bani was in consonance with the teachings of the Gurus, 17 bhattas (bards) and four others. Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru of the Sikhs, had the bani of the first four Gurus compiled in a manuscript for which he asked Bhai Gurdas, a major Sikh theologian, to be the scribe. It was this manuscript, the Adi Granth, which was ceremoniously installed in the sanctum sanctorum of Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar in 1604 AD.

The manuscript also had Guru Arjan Dev’s compositons, the writings of bhagats and some others like Bhai Mardana and Sunder. The work of scribing the bani of the Guru started in the lifetime of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev. His compositions were carried in oral tradition as well as written down by his followers, even during his journeys.

There are references in Puratan Janamsakhi to Hassu Lohar, Shihan Chheemba, Saido Jat, and Tan Sukh Bania, who were also among those who accompanied Guru Nanak during his journeys or udasis and penned his bani. Guru Nanak had founded Kartarpur, at present called Kartarpur Ravi and Dera Baba Nanak. It is now in Pakistan, just across the Ravi and is visible from the Indian side. It was here that the Guru settled down with his family in the twilight of his life. He was then in his seventies. As Bhai Gurdas, who was later to scribe the Adi Granth (original manuscript), says: “The morning would begin with the recitation of Japji and Asa di Vaar, after which people would continue with their worldly duties. In the evening, Sodhar and Aarti were recited.” The Janamsakhis tell us that Guru Nanak compiled Japji and Asa di Va at Kartarpur.

He asked Bhai Lehna to assist him in editing these compositions. He was subsequently chosen, over his own sons, by Guru Nanak as his successor and named Angad, a part of oneself. As tradition puts it, Guru Nanak gave him the pothi (manuscript) that had 974 of his compositions (Pothi zuban Angad jog mili). Guru Angad added 63 of his compositions and gave the corpus to Amar Das, who was to be the next Guru. He was to add 907 compositions. Guru Amar Das made his grandson, Sahansar Ram, write the manuscript. It included the bani of Guru Nanak Dev, Guru Angad Dev and Guru Amar Das. The works of the bhagats were also included in it. A number of manuscripts were written, two of which are still available.

They are known as the Goindwal pothis. These pothis also have Guru Amar Das’s forceful message about bhagat bani’s inclusion and importance, and of how the bhagats were influenced by Guru Nanak (Nama chimba Kabir julaha pure Gur te gat pai). Guru Amar Das decided that the next Guru would be his son-in-law, Guru Ram Das. At this, his two sons were unhappy and they kept the manuscripts with them in order to project their own importance to the followers. The pothis were thus kept by Bhai Mohan, Guru Amar Das’ elder son.

The other major source of bani of Guru Nanak was the Harsahai pothi, which was with the family of the descendants of Prithi Chand, elder brother of Guru Arjan Dev. This manuscript was to remain with the family till it was stolen in 1970-71. When Guru Arjan Dev decided to compile the bani of his predecessors, there were thus a number of significant manuscripts that contained the Gurus’ compositions. Some had certain compositions that Guru Arjan Dev did not consider authentic. In order to consolidate the bani and prevent any spurious compositions from creeping into the original texts, he decided to have the Adi Granth compiled. The Tawarikh Guru Khalsa tells us that everyone who could contribute was asked to do so.

The Guru issued hukamnamas to all Sikhs, asking them to bring the bani of the Gurus to Amritsar, where the editing was to be done. He called the rababis (rebeck players) who had memorised the bani, as well as ordinary Sikhs, who had preserved the bani safely. It was with this corpus that the editing began. Every available source and content was carefully scrutinised and Guru Arjan Dev kept only what was considered absolutely authentic. The task of making the manuscript was entrusted to Bhai Gurdas. The compositions of the bhagats were also scrutinised. The bhagats whose works are contained in the Guru Granth Sahib came from different regions of India and wrote in regional languages.

The number of their compositions which were included is given along with their names: Kabir 541, Farid 116, Namdev 61, Ravidas 40, Trilochan 4, Beni 3, Dhanna 3, Bhikhan 2, Jaidev 2, Parmanand 1, Pipa 1, Ramanand 1, Sadhana 1, Sain 1, Surdas 1. The bhagats were from different religious denominations. They also belonged to different castes, including the so-called low castes, and came from different parts of the country like Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, Maharashtra, Mysore, Sindh, Rajasthan and Punjab. The bhagat bani gives a unique inter-religious, inter-regional flavour to the Adi Granth and the bhagat bani of the Guru Granth Sahib is a wonderfully catholic, cosmopolitan aspect of this scripture. While scribing the Adi Granth, Guru Arjan Dev ensured that the matter was arranged in a particular order and that everything was in proper context.

The author of each composition was identified; the context determined the placing of the bani; the appropriate ragas were determined; and the whole text numbered, so that nothing could be interpolated. Scholars contend that the earlier manuscripts were written without any break between words to prevent anyone from inserting anything between these, and this tradition continues. A raga is usually defined as a musical arrangement that brings forth love in one’s mind. The arrangement of ragas in the Guru Granth Sahib is, according to the Hanuwant system, without the raginis.

All the hymns are meant to be sung; and kirtan, the singing of the bani in an appropriate raga, is considered by Gurmat as an essential part of the religion and the sole form of worship among the Sikhs. Singing kirtan creates a shared community experience through repetition. After the Adi Granth was ready, the manuscript was taken in a ceremonial procession from Ramsar to Harmandir Sahib. Bhai Budha, who had come to Kartarpur and became Guru Nanak’s follower as a young lad, was now much revered. He now had a silver beard and he carried the Adi Granth on his head as a mark of respect. Guru Arjan Dev held a chowr (whisk), and the Sikhs, led by Bhai Gurdas, accompanied the solemn and grand procession to Harmandir Sahib, where the Adi Granth was installed. Guru Arjan Dev and other Sikhs sat at a lower level.

The bani of the Adi Granth held an exalted status. Baba Budha became the first Granthi. Soon more and more Sikhs concentrated on learning Gurmukhi, since the bani was written in this script. The Sikhs also started making copies of the manuscript of the Adi Granth, some of which can still be seen. While the installation of the Adi Granth at Harmandir Sahib was of great significance to the Sikhs, it also caused jealousy to some, especially the estranged relatives of the Gurus. This led to an interesting incident that finds mention in history. In 1605, when Emperor Akbar was visiting Batala in Punjab, he was told that the Sikhs had a holy book that contained passages that were blasphemous to Islam.

The Emperor called for the Adi Granth, which was sent by the Guru in the custody of Bhai Gurdas and Baba Budha. Bhai Gurdas, who had written every word of it, assured the Emperor that there was nothing against Islam, and that on the contrary, it contained hymns of Muslim saints. The Adi Granth was read at random in the presence of qazis and pandits. The first stanza said: “We are all children of our Father God.” When it was opened next, it said: “God pervades all His creation and the creation resides in Him. When there is nothing but God, whom should one blame.”

The Emperor realised that there was nothing blasphemous in the document and he made an offering of gold coins to the Adi Granth. Robes of honour were presented to both custodians of the Adi Granth. This became the first significant instance of someone recognising the intrinsic truth contained in the Adi Granth and thereafter making a symbolic offering to it, something millions do every day, the world over. Guru Gobind Singh, after adding 115 compositions of his father, Guru Teg Bahadur, and Jai Jai Vantee Raga to the extant 30 ragas in the Adi Granth, proclaimed near the end of his life that henceforth there would be no person who would be the Guru of the Sikhs.

The sole Guru would be the Word enshrined in the Guru Granth Sahib. The Word of faith, scribed for two centuries, was now complete and final.

  • Japan economy stalls as incomes, spending languish

Japan economy stalls as incomes, spending languish

TOKYO (TIP): Japan’s vital signs remained weak in July as wages fell further and household spending dropped, signaling continued weakness in the world’s third-largest economy. Data released Friday showed the inflation rate was unchanged from the previous month. The core price consumer index that excludes volatile fresh food prices rose 3.3% in July, the same as a month earlier.

Much of the increase stems from a 2%age point increase in Japan’s sales tax in April, which has since sapped much of the steam from the country’s economic recovery. Under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the government and central bank have sought to spur inflation on the premise that it would goad businesses and consumers into spending more instead of saving money in anticipation the Japan’s deflationary spiral will guarantee lower prices in the future.

That strategy, dubbed “Abenomics,” has made some headway in ending the long spell of deflation that slowed growth for much of the past two decades. But headline inflation remains below the official target of 2%, excluding the boost from the tax hike, and so far there are only scant signs of the desired “virtuous cycle” of higher corporate spending to sustain growth in the long term. Real incomes fell 6.2% in July from a year earlier and the unemployment rate edged higher to 3.8% from 3.7% in June.

Softness in the labor market would counter any moves toward higher wages that might help spur more consumer demand. The economy contracted by 6.8% in the April-June quarter, following a surge early in the year as businesses and families stepped up buying ahead of the tax hike, which raised the consumption tax to 8% from 5%. The government plans extra stimulus spending to counter the tax hike’s lingering effects.

Industrial production rose slightly in July, by 0.2% from June, but was down 0.9% from a year earlier in seasonally adjusted terms, the ministry of trade and industry reported. “Today’s data on industrial production and retail sales show that the economy continued to stagnate at the start of the third quarter,” economist Marcel Thieliant of Capital Economics said in a commentary. Although a survey showed companies expect output to increase in August and gain further momentum in September, “these forecasts have tended to overestimate the future pace of expansion in the past,” he said. Bank of Japan Gov.

Haruhiko Kuroda told fellow central bank chiefs earlier this month that the BOJ plans to continue its “extremely accommodative monetary stance” until inflation has risen to the bank’s 2% target. He said the bank’s support could be expanded if necessary. With inflation “running out of steam,” growth is likely to moderate even after the recovery resumes as expected in coming months, Credit Agricole said in a research note. It said that rising inventories “will weigh on the recovery of production into months ahead.”

UN security council meets on Ukraine crisis

UNITED NATIONS (TIP): The UN security council met on August 29 in an emergency session on the growing crisis in Ukraine with some members expressing outrage. UN undersecretary-general of Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman told council members, as the meeting began, that the latest developments mark a ” dangerous escalation in the conflict,” but that the international body had no way of verifying the latest ”deeply alarming reports.” The emergency security council meeting came hours after a top Ukrainian official said two columns of Russian tanks and military vehicles fired missiles from Russia at a Ukraine border post, then rolled into the country.

That opened a new front in the war in eastern Ukraine between pro-Russia separatists and the new government of President Petro Poroshenko. Statements from Nato, Poroshenko, the separatists, the United States and the president of the security council left no doubt that Russia had invaded Ukraine. A top Nato official said at least 1,000 Russian troops have entered Ukraine with sophisticated equipment and have been in direct ”contact” with Ukrainian soldiers, resulting in casualties.

The new southeastern front raised fears that the separatists are seeking to create a land link between Russia and Crimea, which Russia annexed in March. US ambassador Samantha Power told the council. ”Every single one has sent a straightforward, unified message: `Russia, stop this conflict. Russia is not listening.”’ ”Russia has come before the council to say everything but the truth,” Power said. ”We will continue working with G-7 partners to rachet up consequences on Russia,” Power said, and France also threatened that sanctions will be increased if the escalation continues.Prior to the meeting, Russian ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin told reporters ”You’re at a loss,” offering no further comment. UK ambassador Mark Lyall Grant told reporters: ”Russia will be asked to explain why Russia has its troops inside Ukraine. It’s very clear that Russian regular troops are now in Ukraine.”

FBI INVESTIGATES CYBER ATTACK ON US BANKS

WASHINGTON (TIP)The FBI is investigating a suspected Russian cyber attack on a number of American banks. Hackers are believed to have targeted JP Morgan and at least four other banks in the US, amid increasing concern over cyber security from watchdogs on both sides of the Atlantic. The attack on JP Morgan reportedly resulted in the loss of “gigabytes of sensitive data” that could have involved customer and employee information. It is said to have been of a level of sophistication beyond ordinary criminals, leading to speculation of a state link.

The FBI is thought to be investigating whether there is a connection to Russia. American-Russian relations continue to be fraught amid the crisis in Ukraine, with sanctions ramped up. The bank is understood to have been in touch with executives in London to see if there is any link to its UK operations, but so far the attack, which happened earlier this month, is thought to have affected only the US. But watchdogs are increasingly worried about the city’s potential vulnerability to an aggressive state-backed hack.

A spokesman for JP Morgan said: “Companies of our size unfortunately experience cyber attacks nearly every day. We have multiple layers of defence to counteract any threats and constantly monitor fraud levels.” JP faced criticism in April when it blocked a payment from a Russian embassy to the affiliate of an American-sanctioned bank. Russia’s foreign ministry described the move as “absolutely unacceptable, illegal and absurd”.

GIANT PANDA FAKES PREGNANCY ‘TO RECEIVE GOOD FOOD AND ROUNDTHE- CLOCK CARE’

BEIJING (TIP): The world’s first live broadcast of a panda birth has been called off after experts said the “mother” involved may have been faking the pregnancy to receive better treatment. “Phantom pregnancies” are common among giant pandas — but keepers at her breeding centre in Sichuan province believe six-year-old Ai Hin could be exhibiting learned behaviour that marks her out as smarter than the average bear.

The giant panda started showing signs of pregnancy including reduced appetite and mobility in July, at which point she was chosen to star in a heavily-publicised first ever live birth. But after two months of observation, experts have told state news agency Xinhua that Ai Hin’s behaviour and physiological tests returned to normal. Wu Kongju, an expert at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre where Ai Hin is kept, explained that not all “fake” pregnancies among the animals are just down to hormonal changes. “After showing prenatal signs, the ‘mothers-to-be’ are moved into single rooms with air conditioning and aroundthe- clock care,” Wu told Xinhua. “They also receive more buns, fruits and bamboo, so some clever pandas have used

HJC parts ways with BJP, joins hands with Venod Sharma’s party

CHANDIGARH (TIP): Snapping a three-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Kuldeep Bishnoi-led Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) on Aug 28 joined hands with former Congress MLA Venod Sharma’s Haryana Jan Chetna Party (HJCP) for the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana.

Bishnoi and Sharma jointly made this announcement while interacting with mediapersons here. Hitting out at the BJP, Bishnoi said: “BJP ka to ye culture hi raha hai jhooth bolna aur dhokha dena. Jo Vajpayee, Advani aur Murli Manohar Joshi (top BJP leaders) ke nahi huye, Charan Singh, Devi Lal, Bansi Lal aur Om Prakash Chautala ke nahi huye, vo hamare kaise honge (it’s been the BJP’s culture to betray and tell lies).” “Aur kyonki hamein yeh pata tha ke yeh ab hamein dhokha denge, hamne likhit samjhota kiya, par inhon ne phir hamein dhokha diya (Since we knew that the BJP would betray us, we went in for a written agreement, but the BJP still betrayed us).” Claiming that it was unprecedented in Indian politics that a written agreement was made for an alliance, Bishnoi said the BJP again showed its true colours.

“BJP dhokhebaz hai aur iska ghamand saatwein aasmaan pe chadh gaya hai, aur ghamand to Ravana ka bhi tuta tha (The BJP is treacherous and its arrogance has gone skyhigh. But even the arrogant Ravana was humbled).” Bishnoi claimed that though the HJC went the extra mile to maintain the alliance, the BJP cheated it at every step. “Inhone har pal, har kadam par mera gala ghotna chaha, aur hum sahan karte rahe, par ab pani sar se upar chala gaya hai (The BJP tried to stifle us, and we kept tolerating them. But now all limits have been crossed).” He, however, avoided naming BJP leaders who were opposed to the alliance. Replying to a question on a likely alliance with former minister Gopal Kanda’s Haryana Lokhit Party, he said he could not comment on it at present.

Regarding the new alliance’s manifesto and seatsharing, Bishnoi said it would be worked out in the days to come. Meanwhile, former Ambala MLA Venod Sharma, who also addressed mediapersons on the occasion, said Haryana would now witness an HJC-HJCP wave as the BJP did not even have candidates for all 90 seats. He said the alliance, if voted to power, would abolish the interview system in government jobs and the practice of re-employment of retired employees. “The HJCP would release its own manifesto during its rally at Ambala on August 31, though the alliance would have a common manifesto too,” Sharma said.

  • PM ‘JAN DHAN’ YOJANA LAUNCHED; 1.5 CRORE BANK ACCOUNTS OPENED IN A DAY

PM ‘JAN DHAN’ YOJANA LAUNCHED; 1.5 CRORE BANK ACCOUNTS OPENED IN A DAY

NEW DELHI (TIP): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Aug 28 launched his government’s mega scheme ‘Jan Dhan Yojana’, declaring that it was aimed at eradicating financial untouchability by providing bank accounts to the poor. On the inaugural day, a record 1.5 crore bank accounts were opened across the country, the largest such exercise on a single day possibly anywhere in the world.

Unveiling the scheme within 100 days of forming the new government, Modi said, it will cover 7.5 crore people by January 26, 2015, who will be provided zero-balance bank account with RuPay debit card, life insurance cover of Rs 30,000 in addition to accidental insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh. Later the account holders will be provided an overdraft facility of up to Rs 5,000. “If Mahatma Gandhi worked to remove social untouchability, if we want to get rid of poverty, then we have to first get rid of financial untouchability.

We have to connect every person with the financial system. And for that this programme has been given impetus,” he said, adding, “when a bank account is opened, it’s a step towards joining economic mainstream.” Modi recalled the bank nationalization of 1969 with the avowed objective of spreading the reach of financial system to the doorsteps of poor. “But I regret to say that after 68 years of independence, not even 68 per cent of population is covered by the banking system,” he said.

The scheme was simultaneously launched at multiple places by 20 chief ministers, several Union ministers, including information minister Prakash Javadekar at Pune, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad at Chennai, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj at Bhopal, home minister Rajnath Singh at Lucknow and HRD minister Smriti Irani at Surat. There were in all 600 programmes and 77,852 camps on the opening day to open bank accounts. Modi said history has been created in the banking system with opening of over 1.5 crore account in a day.

Besides, a record has been created by providing 1.5 crore accidental insurance covers of Rs 1 lakh. The Prime Minister described the occasion as a festival to celebrate the liberation of the poor from a poisonous cycle (“Vish-chakra se gareebon ki aazaadi ka parv”). “Banks have assured me they will do this work before January 26. Those who oppen accounts by January 26, 2015 over and above the the Rs 1 lakh accident, they will be given life insurance cover of Rs 30,000.

This will help the poor family,” he said. In the third phase, he said, these account holders would also be provided micro-pension facility. “I believe when a person opens a bank account then he or she takes the first step to get connected with the economic system. Today the 1.5 crore family who got connected with the economic system this will give a boost to the economy,” he said. Going forward, he can avail Rs 5,000 loan from the bank, the Prime Minister said, adding, this facility would be available after six months of opening of the bank account.

Expressing satisfaction at a number of records being broken today, the Prime Minister said the nationwide success of the enrolment drive today would give confidence not just to the officials of the department of financial services and banking sectors, but also to officers across the Union government, that they can successfully achieve the goals that they set for themselves. “Never before would insurance companies have issued 1.5 lakh accident insurance policies in a single day. Never before in economic history would 1.5 lakh bank accounts have been opened in a single day. “Never before has the government of India organized a programme of such scale — over 77,000 locations — with the participation of so many chief ministers, Union ministers, government and bank officials,” the Prime Minister said.

Health Care Fraud Enterprise Dismantled, Ringleader Operated Multiple Pharmacies

    By FBI

MICHIGAN (TIP)- It was a combination health care fraud and drug distribution scheme on a massive scale. It involved 26 Michigan pharmacies, nine doctors, and two health care agencies. There were bribes and kickbacks aplenty and thousands of illegal doses of sought-after drugs like oxycodone and hydrocodone. And fraudulent billings to Medicare and Medicaid totaled more than $60 million, not to mention additional amounts to private insurers. But the case began on a much smaller scale.

In 2008, the Bureau learned that a single Michigan pharmacy was allegedly sending phony bills to Medicare and private insurance companies for prescription drugs. During the ensuing joint investigation with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General, however, we were able to connect a wide array of other pharmacies-and subjects-to this illegal activity.

We also uncovered the illegal diversion of controlled substances to people who didn’t medically need them, as well as billings to the government and private insurers for millions of dollars of noncontrolled medications that were never dispensed to patients.

In August 2011 and March 2013, a total of 39 individuals-including ringleader Babubhai Patel-were indicted on various federal health care fraud and drug charges related to this scheme, which ran from 2006 to 2011. After a six-week trial, Patel was convicted and sentenced to a 17-year prison term in 2013. And just last month, the 38th defendant in the case was convicted in federal court.

These defendants included pharmacists, doctors, home health care agency owners, an accountant, and a psychologist. (The 39th defendant is currently a fugitive believed to be outside the U.S.-law enforcement continues to pursue him.) How the scheme worked. Patel, a pharmacist and businessman from Canton, Michigan, owned and/or controlled 26 pharmacies and several home health care agencies in that state, but he concealed his involvement in many of these facilities through the use of straw owners. He and his associates recruited a number of pharmacistsmostly from overseas-to staff his pharmacies and help facilitate his scheme to defraud government and private insurers.

Patel and his associates offered kickbacks and bribes to doctors willing to write medically unnecessary prescriptions, home health care referrals, and bills for other services to Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers. He also provided kickbacks and bribes to patient recruiters-individuals hired to go out and find patients willing to share their insurance information-as well as other inducements, such as doses of the drugs from the illegally written prescriptions.

Patient recruiters, in turn, would then offer some of the same inducements to government and private insurance patients to get the patients to fill their prescriptions at Patel-owned pharmacies. When all was said and done, a prolific criminal enterprise was completely dismantled. And its ringleader discovered that crime really doesn’t pay: In addition to his 17-year prison sentence, Babubhai Patel was ordered to pay nearly $19 million in restitution to the insurance programs he had bilked. Dallas Sikh Congregation threatened to leave country by man posing as IRS Officer

DALLAS, TX (TIP): On August 10th , a man walked into Gurdwara Singh Sabha of North Texas claiming to be an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officer there to do an audit. He confronted one of the gurdwara members, and accused the gurdwara of not having paid its taxes. He said the IRS would be raiding the gurdwara very soon, and started to walk out of the building towards the parking lot.

Narinder Singh Sekhon followed him and asked him why he was there. Sekhon stated, “As I approached the perpetrator, he called me, and our community, terrorists and said you have 48 hours to leave the country or I will finish you.” Threatening and yelling racial slurs, he then drove off the gurdwara premises. The man’s picture and license plate number have been recorded and reported to the authorities. A human rights and advocacy group UNITED SIKHS has claimed that it is helping the gurdwara management committee to work with local law enforcement, the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Justice, Community Relations Service to investigate this act of racism and hate.

Surinder Singh Gill, a member of the Board of Directors at Gurdwara Singh Sabha commented on this incident stating, “We will continue to assist law enforcement with their investigations and work on this until complete justice is served.” Gurdwara committee member, .Harjeet Singh Hothi, added “I request the Sikh community to be vigilant. This individual claimed to be an IRS agent, used offensive language, and tried to intimidate us and threatened us.” This incident occurred right after second anniversary of the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Gurdwara massacre in which six Sikhs lost their lives after a white supremacist opened fire at the congregation. Since then, Sikhs across the country have been vigilant during large gatherings and have worked with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to better secure our gurdwaras.

A prime example of this is the State of New Jersey where UNITED SIKHS worked with local gurdwaras and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (NJOHSP) to develop security protocols for congregations. Along with protocols, NJOHSP identified and trained congregation members on how to identify suspicious activity and other security related issues concerning the gurdwara. Similar incidents have recently occurred in New York City. A week ago, Dr. Jaspreet Singh Batra was first verbally abused, called a ‘terrorist’ and then attacked by a group of ten teenagers in Roosevelt Island. Dr Batra was walking with his mother at the time to have dinner.

Earlier, in Queens, NY, Sandeep Singh was called racial slurs, told to “go back to his country” and then run over by a truck driven by the perpetrator. Sandeep was dragged almost 60 feet with the truck after being mowed over, but miraculously survived. With all these incidents occurring around the same time, the Sikh community at large is grieving and remains on high alert.

Our efforts for justice will continue as we work with the Gurdwara Singh Sabha of North Texas to ensure this case is being properly investigated. Harvinder Singh Randhawa, another member of the Gurdwara’s Board of Directors, stated: “We appreciate UNITED SIKHS’ efforts in assisting the sangat in this trying time and look forward to collaborating further.” UNITED SIKHS urges Sikh communities across the nation to remain vigilant and report any kind of suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

We also encourage installation of cameras on gurdwara premises and parking lots to help capture such incidents to better assist law enforcement track perpetrators.

Indian American from Chicago indicted in visa fraud

CHICAGO (TIP): A 30-year-old Indian American businessmen has been indicted on charges for exploiting a US visa program to fraudulently raise approximately US$ 160 million from nearly 290 Chinese nationals who invested in the project while seeking US residency.

Chicago-based Anshoo Sethi, who purported to be building a US$ 912 million hotel and convention center complex near O’Hare International Airport, was charged, August 27, with eight counts of wire fraud and two counts of making false statements in a 10-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury. The indictment filed before a Chicagocourt seeks forfeiture of at least US$ 11 million in administrative fees that Sethi allegedly collected from Chinese investors and expended as part of the fraud scheme.

Sethi, the founder and a managing member of A Chicago Convention Center LLC, misappropriated at least US$ 320,000 of the fees to purchase luxury goods for himself, his family, and friends, and for an unrelated civil lawsuit settlement to fund a cosmetic surgery business, and for other personal expenses, according to the indictment. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued Sethi over the purported project in early 2013 and the case was settled earlier this year.

Approximately US$ 147 million, which had been escrowed by Sethi and frozen by the SEC, was returned to Chinese investors. According to the indictment, Sethi solicited Chinese nationals who were interested in obtaining EB-5 visas to invest US$ 500,000 each plus a US$ 41,500 administrative fee in A Chicago Convention Center and the Intercontinental Regional Center.

He said that the US$ 500,000 would be used for construction of the complex and the US$ 41,500 would be used for administrative and marketing expenses, the indictment alleges. Under current US laws, foreign nationals get green card or permanent residency if they invest US$ 1 million, or at least US$ 500,000 in a domestic project in a high unemployment or rural area and their investment would create or preserve at least 10 jobs for US workers.

Each Chinese national who invested US$ 541,500 in the project also applied for an EB-5 visa with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), but no EB-5 visas were actually granted to investors through the convention center project, federal investigative agencies said.

Diplomat’s daughter, Krittika Biswas’ case against NYC

    Second Circuit dismisses City’s appeal

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): A visibly pleased Ravi Batra, attorney for Krittika Biswas said in a statement , “I am happy to report, with great professional and American pride, that the lofty United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals, with a panel of its distinguished Judges, the Hon. Jose A. Cabranes, Hon. Chester J. Straub and Hon. Raymond J. Lohier, Jr., in a lightning fast Order, dated August 25, 2014, a mere three days after the Argument on August 20, 2014, agreed with our opposition that not a single defendant enjoyed “qualified immunity” and hence, were not entitled to get Krittika’s case dismissed and leave her without a remedy for the wrongs inflicted upon her by the defendants as claimed in the suit. Indeed, that Krittika Biswas is a daughter of an Indian Diplomat is not a crime.

Hence, it is fair to say that the constitutional 4th Amendment bar against unreasonable searches and seizures was re-vindicated and I enjoyed doing so before a Court of great substance. “On September 30, 2013, SDNY Judge Koetl had issued a scholarly and thorough Order, in which the court rebuffed the defendants’ ignoble attempt to dismiss Krittika’s case in its entirety. The City Law Department on behalf of all defendants took the unusual step to take an interlocutory appeal seeking to dismiss the case in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals based upon “qualified immunity” grounds.

I had warned the City’s lawyers not to engage in this burdensome process, as we would oppose same and expected to beat them, based upon binding precedent, in the second highest court of our nation. “The City’s tactic of excessive litigation, defying precedent as if they could levitate beyond the gravity of law, was intended to intimidate Krittika and burden her lawyers beyond violations’ damages, hence causing an explosive growth of legal effort and fees to defend Krittika’s rights, is at best only going to continue to drive up the legal fees component of the case while publicly embarrassing the defendants at every turn.

While defendant Kim-Ross has taken early retirement and can no longer hurt any school kids, and we wish her well, but not every defendant has. Indeed, defendant-principal Howard Kwait has during the pendency of this case been found guilty of ethics violations in unrelated matters as publicly reported, shows that the now upcoming discovery phase and subsequent Jury trial will serve to expose systemic flaws in our public school system’s disciplinary process that put 1.1 million of our kids at risk of being falsely charged, falsely arrested and accepting undeserved punishment as they can’t afford the fight we are fighting on Krittika’s behalf. It appears that defendant-principal Howard Kwait’s ethical and constitutional compass are in need of the disinfectant sunshine that only a public trial in court can bring.

Upon Krittika’s expected success, while her damages remain what they were, the excessive litigation bill will be paid by the City of New York for its unbecoming and unjust excessive litigious stance. “Indeed, the Court held that ‘We have considered all of defendants’ arguments and find them to be without merit.

For the reasons set out above, the appeal from the September 30, 2013 judgment of the District Court is DISMISSED for lack of jurisdiction.’ “Like with prosecutorial offices, society expects more from municipal law departments than merely acting as private litigants who wish to win at any cost, as they ought to do justice and help form as Thomas Jefferson wanted, ‘…a more perfect union.’ Until Krittika receives a full measure of justice, including, paying for her exploded legal fees due to the defendants actions, this case will not go away. Krittika’s respect will be redeemed in full measure.”

However, he reiterated that BJP would storm to power in those states in the near future. To another question, he said that the media could no longer afford to ignore BJP.

Answering a question related consulate services in US, he said that services will improve and OFBJP has a great opportunity to work with the consulates in improving the services. On the issue of appeasement of minorities by the Telangana government that promised to bring the rule of Nizam, he reminded that another Sardar Patel is now ruling India and India’s integrity will be preserved at all costs. Krishna Reddy (Treasurer, OFBJP) presented the vote of thanks and recognized the community leaders including Sunil Nayak who provided the venue.

Global Citizen Forum Launches New York Chapter

NEW YORK (TIP): The Global Citizen Forum, New York branch was launched here on August 23. Addressing prominent members of the Indian-American community and representatives of some American think-tanks at the launch, at the UN New York Millennium Hotel, the founder and chairman of the GCF, Indian industrialist Bhupendra Kumar Modi said that the world today is not defined by countries, but by cities and metropolises, thereby heralding a big change in the world order.

Modi talked about laying the foundation of a new world order under India’s leadership, and promoting understanding between India, China and the U.S., under the leadership of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The world has changed rapidly in the past decade, and so have the people of India, Modi, said. “There is not a single city in the world where there is no ‘Little India,” he said, noting how the Diaspora has made its presence in every part of the world.

    15
Bhishma Agnihotri, former Ambassador at Large, Government of India, in his keynote address congratulated B.K. Modi for taking the age old Indian message of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”- the whole world is a family – to every nook and corner of the world. He also said India had now an opportunity to be the world leader under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It was with this growing change in mind that Modi founded the GCF in January 2013 to create a world without boundaries. Modi, lived in New York City from 1999 to 2004, before moving to California and then to Singapore and is currently based in New Delhi. Modi is also the chairman of Spice Global, an Indian conglomerate headquartered in Singapore as well as the council and chairman of Asia Crime Prevention Foundation’s India chapter. He was appointed by the United Nations as the coordinator for the Indian subcontinent for the Millennium World Peace Summit. Modi became a citizen of Singapore in 2012 and ranks 23rd in the Forbes list of Singapore’s richest people.

    16
A view of the gathering at the launch of Global Citizen Forum in New York on August 23, 2014.

On Feb. 17, 2004, the U.S. House of Representatives issued a proclamation in appreciation of Modi’s efforts to promote deeper understanding between the two countries and congratulated him on his innovations and humanitarian efforts worldwide. Author of many books, including “One God, Hinduism – The Universal Truth” and “Performance – A Manager’s Challenge and Whispers of Peace”, Modi is essentially a man of ideas and vision. On the idea of establishing the forum, Modi said, one of the main reasons was to make sure that humanity remains the number one priority of people around the world.

“Over the years one has seen a change in the business and spiritual leadership”, Modi said, adding that what is lacking is political change. “One first needs to be a global citizen and then a citizen of his or her respective country he said. “How many take the world as a family,” he questioned. Elaborating on the concept of ‘one world,” Modi told the gathering that India, under the leadership of Narendra Modi, could be the answer to bring the world closer. Narendra Modi has taken Indian psyche, and is bringing changes according to that and is seen as a man of wisdom and has thus raised hopes for a global change, Modi said.

The philosophy of a global India, Modi said, is based on Gautama Buddha’s teachings, which expounded the virtues of compassion and giving. “When you give [something] to somebody, you receive more happiness than the man who receives it,” Modi said. While striving for being a global citizen, one should not forget the “poorest people” in the world, and should find ways in connecting with them, he warned. “Wisdom to see world as one, courage to go to any part of the world and live there, and compassion”are the three main qualities of a global citizen, he said. A film on Gautam Buddha was screened.

It depicted Buddha’s disillusionment with princely life and his search for enlightenment. The Creative Producer of the film which is telecast in episodes on a TV channel in India, Ms. Ridwana was also present on the occasion and spoke with the media about the making of the film. Some more notable guests at the event included Bhishma Agnihotri, former Ambassador at Large, Government of India, who was the keynote speaker, and Swami Chidananda Saraswati, president and spiritual head of the Parmarth Niketan Ashram in Rishikesh, India, and co-founder of the Global Interfaith WASH Alliance (GIWA) at the UNICEF Headquarters at the United Nations.

The Indian Tricolor was illuminated vertically as the Parks Commission had no provision to illuminate vertically.

Currently a total of twenty-one xenon lights, each with a 76-cm (30 in) diameter, are used to illuminate the Falls in a rainbow of colors. Eighteen are located at the Illumination Tower, beside the Queen Victoria Place and three are located below street level in the gorge opposite the American Falls.
