Pakistan trained students to use social media for JuD, LeT Terror propaganda

WASHINGTON (TIP): Students of an elite military-run university in Pakistan have been trained to use social media sites in support of banned terrorist groups like LeT and JuD which have been protected and supported by the ISI, according to US national security sources.

Less than a week after the US visit of Pakistan’s army chief General Raheel Sharif who met top officials of the Obama administration including Vice President Joe Biden, sources in the national security establishment here said they have fresh evidence of the ISI training people to engage in a social media war on behalf of these banned terror groups on Facebook and Twitter.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the sources shared a recently prepared document which provides such a link between the Pakistani establishment and those indulging in propaganda on social media for terror organizations like Lashkar-e-Tayaba (LeT) and its wing Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD).

The document was prepared based on publicly available sources on the Internet.

For instance, Malik Salman Javed, director of the recently formed Stratagem magazine is a graduate of the National Defence University’s (NDU) national security workshop.

Javed, who on his website writes that he is a NDU-Pakistan alumni, has been posting pro-JuD content on Twitter for the past several years.

“In addition to PKKH (Pakistan Ka Khuda Hafiz), Fortress and NDU, there is strong circumstantial evidence that at least some Stratagem members have a strong affinity for, if not direct membership in Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD),” according to the US dossier, a part of which was seen by PTI.

Notably PKKH, a strategic policy institute, has a history of collaboration with JuD since at least 2010 when PKKH launched “Mere Log” – a disaster relief operation to provide food and shelter to victims of that year’s deadly floods.

“Mere Log” was conducted under the supervision of JuD and the Pakistan Army, the brief report said.

In the first issue of Stratagem magazine, author M Zainulbedin Ameer used JuD’s Maulana Hamza as an example of people working to protect Islam.

The dossier said that Ameer’s Facebook page also regularly features JuD propaganda that suggests he has a close affinity if not membership of the group.

Now in existence for more than six months, Stratagem contents confirm to a right-wing Pakistani national ideology based in certain fundamental premises that “democracy is a failure” in Pakistan, India is “determined” to destroy Pakistan, its military is both faultless and invincible and that Pakistan and Islam are under attack from internal as well as external forces, the dossier said.

  • Salman Khan acquitted in 13 year old hit-and-run case

Salman Khan acquitted in 13 year old hit-and-run case

MUMBAI (TIP): Salman Khan-the popular Bollywood actor has been acquitted of all charges against him in the 13-year-old hit-and-run case, Bombay High Court ruled on Thursday, December 10. The actor was accused of drunk driving and losing control of his SUV, that left one person dead and four others injured, after a night of drinking at an upscale bar in Mumbai in 2002 and fleeing the scene.

“The appeal filed by Salman Salim Khan is allowed. He is acquitted of all charges against him. His conviction and sentence stand quashed,” said Justice A R Joshi. Khan was reportedly moved to tears in the packed courtroom.

The court said the actor cannot be convicted on the basis of evidence submitted by the prosecution.

Justice AR Joshi citied many reasons in the shoddy investigation and prosecution that went in favor of Salman Khan. The judge noted that the prosecution had failed to prove that the incident didn’t happen due to the bursting of tire. The testimony of late police constable Ravindra Patil, who was assigned to guard Salman Khan on the night of the fateful accident, was also termed unreliable by the Judge.

Earlier in May, with eight charges against him, including culpable homicide, a non-bailable offence, a Mumbai Sessions Court had found him guilty and had sentenced him to five years in prison. But two days later, the Bombay High Court suspended the actor’s jail sentence. Khan’s lawyers had argued that the lower court had not considered all the evidence at hand during the trial. Khan was then granted bail.

Every year, more than 130,000 people are killed on India’s deadly roads and over 20,000 cases relate to drivers causing accidents under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In India, there has been a mixed reaction to Salman Khan’s acquittal. Majority, however, found fault with the judgment. The  verdict  handed down by Justice A.R. Joshi  is likely to be a subject of serious discussion in the media.

It is too early to know what Indian Americans think of the actor’s acquittal. However, going by the judicial  standards here, many will fault the judgment.

  • Long Island: Political Winners & Losers

Long Island: Political Winners & Losers

    Winners

Madeline Singas: Madeline Singas  Nassau’s acting-District Attorney earned a four-year term promoting her credentials as a non-political career prosecutor committed to rooting out corruption wherever it is and whoever is responsible.

Tired of countywide GOP scandals, Republicans and Conservatives deserted their party’s unqualified candidate, Kate Murray, in droves to vote for the competent and experienced Singas.

John Venditto-John Venditto:  The long-time Oyster Bay town supervisor won re-election by only 99 votes. His unknown and under-financed Democratic opponent John Mangelli surged in this
Republican stronghold after the indictment of big-time politically connected vendor Harendra Singh, who had questionable contracts and financial arrangements that were blessed by Venditto and the township’s legislative body.

With Federal investigators searching every nook and cranny in Oyster Bay, one can only wonder if he will serve out his 10th term of office.

Judi BosworthJudi Bosworth:  Unlike her predecessor, Jon Kaiman, who barely skated by in his last two campaigns for North Hempstead supervisor, Bosworth won in a landslide receiving 68 percent of the vote.

She proved that voters reward honest hard work, civil demeanor and dedication to public service.

Anthony SantinoAnthony Santino: He pulled off an impressive victory in the race for Hempstead Town Supervisor. Santino, Nassau County GOP spokesman for many years, managed to garner 60 percent of the vote, as incumbent Town Supervisor Kate Murray went down in flames in the DA’s race.

It will be interesting to learn if his first allegiance is to the taxpayers or to Boss Joe Mondello.

Bruce BlakemanBruce Blakeman:  After losing races for state Comptroller, U.S. Senator, Congress and county Legislature, Nassau’s leading political narcissist finally won a race. The downwardly-mobile Blakeman was elected to the Hempstead Town Council.

Boy oh boy, what an accomplishment for the 60-year-old Blakeman.

    LOSERS

Ed Mangano:  Ed ManganoThe county executive’s administration is in shambles. He has an ever-growing structural operating deficit he is incapable of fixing. Court transcripts indicate Mangano said he would invoke Fifth Amendment rights if called to testify in the Skelos trial.

There are allegations he accepted expensive free vacations and tens of thousands of dollars of free meals from indicted vendor and restaurateur Harendra Singh.

Rob WalkerRob Walker: Nassau’s first deputy county executive testified against his political crony, Sen. Dean Skelos. Although Walker received federal immunity for taking the stand in the Skelos trial, he admitted he received no protection from ongoing federal investigations involving county contracts for campaign donors and business pushed to a personal friend.

Will Walker soon cut a deal and throw Mangano under a NICE bus?

Kate MurrayKate Murray:  The popular Hempstead Town Supervisor permitted herself to be talked into running for Nassau DA despite the fact she had no prosecutorial experience.

Appalled by her lack of credentials, the voters overwhelmingly rejected her. She even lost Hempstead receiving only 45 percent of the vote. Will her next job be acting county executive if Mangano resigns his post?

Jon_KaimanJon Kaiman: The NIFA Chairman’s self-proclaimed cost-neutral wage deal with the public employees union has been a disaster. It has driven the county deeper into the red to the tune of $70 million annually. Political wags are asking what Kaiman actually does to earn the $150,000 he’s paid annually as Gov. Cuomo’s Long Island’s Hurricane Sandy Recovery Czar. Given references to NIFA’s role in approving the controversial AbTech contract and former North Hempstead Councilman Tom Dwyer’s role with Adam Skelos, there are questions if one of NIFA’s board members has been interviewed or deposed by the feds.

JERSEY CITY, NJ (TIP): An Indian American woman has been charged with insurance fraud by the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor (OIFP) in New Jersey.

Rajinder Kaur, 35, of Jersey City, has been indicted for allegedly filing crash claim against insurance policy which she obtained after accident occurred. She could face up to five years in prison and $15,000 in fines, if convicted, authorities said.

A state grand jury charged Kaur with one count of third-degree insurance fraud for allegedly submitting claim which occurred before the policy was in effect.

“Crash-and-buy schemes are one of the most common insurance fraud scams in the country. Like any auto fraud, these scams drive up insurance rates for honest policy holders,” said Acting Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Ronald Chillemi. “Drivers tempted to commit this kind of illegal chicanery after a crash should think about the serious criminal penalties they’ll face.”

According to the indictment, Kaur filed her claim with Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO). Within days or months of obtaining insurance, the defendant allegedly filed claim for prior accident.

New Jersey’s acting Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Ronald Chillemi said “drivers tempted to commit this kind of illegal chicanery after a crash should think about the serious criminal penalties they’ll face.”

  • Anupam Kher wants to work with Aamir

Anupam Kher wants to work with Aamir

Veteran actor Anupam Kher may not have agreed with Aamir Khan’s statements and after being at the forefront of slamming him in the intolerance debate took a different stand on him (professionally).

The veteran actor doesn’t see his disagreement coming in way of his professional rapport with Aamir Khan and is open to collaborating with the superstar actor again in films.

Anupam Kher now says he’d love to work with the actor-producer, whom he has now called a “dear friend”.

“I have great friends, including Aamir. I would like to believe that he is a very dear friend of mine,” Anupam said at the launch of a Society magazine cover featuring him.

Anupam had shared a series of tweets when Aamir’s statements on intolerance made headlines, and had expressed concern about the latter’s views. Justifying his action then, Anupam said he was informed about the controversy by his taxi driver who wanted to know if Aamir was right in saying that there is “growing despondence” in the nation.

“That triggered it off. It was a spontaneous reaction and I’ve stuck to it because there is nothing wrong (in what I said).

“I just said that this is a great country, so as celebrities we have to say things which do not create fear in smaller places. I don’t want to raise a flag on the issue. If I was politically correct, I wouldn’t have said it. I don’t want to come across as a crusader who wants to talk about it everywhere. I have great love for Aamir, and for everybody,” shared Anupam.

Surprisingly, Anupam and Aamir haven’t shared the frame since 1990, even though they were part of “Rang De Basanti”.

When asked if they will work together, Anupam said: “I would love to. He’s a producer-director; he can cast me anytime. I would love to work with him. I’ve not worked with him for 25 years, I miss him.”

Alibaba.com says India one of its fastest-growing markets | SMILE

New Delhi: Alibaba Group’s wholesale trading platform Alibaba.com said on Monday, December 7, that India is one of its fastest-growing markets with about 4.5 million registered users.

The Chinese e-commerce giant  is taking the Indian market very seriously indeed. It announced the launch of a slew of services for Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) selling on Alibaba.com.

India is the second largest market for Alibaba’s business-to-business platform after China followed by the US and Europe, said Timothy Leung, head of global business development during his visit to Delhi.

“India is at a stage where e-commerce is set to kick-off and we see a huge opportunity there,” added Leung.

Alibaba.com on Monday launched an online platform SMILE, which stands for Small and Medium Industries Leveraging Export, the programme will offer solutions like financing, logistics, certifications and technology. Alibaba’s partners for the SMILE programme include companies like ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Crisil Rating, Tally, Capital Float Jeena, SGS and Mypacco, who will provide finance, credit rating, online lending, and transportation support to SMEs.

This initiative is meant for the merchants who are on Alibaba.com, the global resellers platform that was opened to Indian SMEs in July.

SMILE will give access to global business trading counterparts as well as trading solutions such as financing, logistics, inspections and certifications, technology and SME trade-linked education.

  • Indian-Origin Scientist Developes New 3D Software to Track Embryonic Development

Indian-Origin Scientist Developes New 3D Software to Track Embryonic Development

WASHINGTON:  An Indian-origin scientist has developed a new, open-source software that can help track the embryonic development and movement of neuronal cells throughout the body of the worm, and is now available to scientists.

The software is described in a paper published in the open access journal, eLife on December 3rd by researchers at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and the Center for Information Technology (CIT); along with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Institute, New York City; Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut; Zhejiang University, China; and the University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington. NIBIB is part of the National Institutes of Health.
Although scientists have identified a number of important proteins that determine how neurons navigate during brain formation, it is largely unknown how all of these proteins interact in a living organism.

“Understanding why and how neurons form and the path they take to reach their final destination could one day give us valuable information about how proteins and other molecular factors interact during neuronal development,” explained Hari Shroff, head of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) research team.

The new technology will be pivotal in their project to create a 4D neurodevelopmental “worm atlas” that attempts to catalog the formation of the worm nervous system.

This catalog will be the first comprehensive view of how an entire nervous system develops.

According to Mr Shroff, it will be helpful in understanding the fundamental mechanisms by which all nervous systems, including ours, assemble.

They also expect that some of the concepts developed, such as the approach taken to combine neuronal data from multiple embryos, can be applied to additional model organisms besides the worm.

“We do not yet understand neurodevelopment even in the context of the humble worm but we’re using it as a simple model of how these factors work together to drive the development of the worm brain and neuronal structure,” he informed.

“We are hoping that by doing so, some of the lessons will translate all the way up to humans,” Mr Shroff added.

The worm known as C elegans has only 302 neurons, 222 of which form while the worm is still an embryo.

The worm even has its own versions of many of the same proteins used to direct brain formation in more complex organisms such as flies, mice, or humans.

Government Reaches Out to Indians Abroad for Fund Raising Flagship Schemes

NEW DELHI:  Non-resident Indians, especially those living in the UK and Qatar, will be reached out to by a government-supported trust to raise funds for ‘Swachh Bharat’ and ‘Clean Ganga’ projects.

India Development Foundation of Overseas Indians (IDF-OI), the not-for-profit trust, will also create a focus group for facilitating contributions by NRIs in the forthcoming Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Conference, 2016.

This was discussed during the fifth meeting of the board of trustees of IDF-OI, chaired by Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Sushma Swaraj, in New Delhi yesterday.

The board reviewed the progress made by IDF-OI on the revised mandate given in its last meeting on May 23, 2015 i.e. to promote among the overseas Indians the flagship programmes of Government of India — Swachh Bharat Mission and National Mission for Clean Ganga; projects identified by the state governments and donor advised projects.

“The board directed that IDF-OI may enhance its outreach among overseas Indians, through visits to the UK and Qatar.

“In the forthcoming Pravasi Bhartiya Divas conference 2016, there will be a focus group on facilitating contributions by overseas Indians through IDF-OI,” a press release issued today by the government said.

Sushma Swaraj is the Chairperson of IDF-OI, set-up by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs to facilitate philanthropic contributions by overseas Indians to social and development projects in India.

During the meeting, IDF-OI informed the board that under the Swachh Bharat Mission, overseas Indians were invited to fund construction of household, community and public toilets in both urban and rural areas.

“IDF has also invited contributions for the National Mission for Clean Ganga. In response to IDF-OI’s request, several state governments have identified social and development projects in their respective states in areas such as sanitation, education, drinking water, women’s empowerment etc which are available for funding through IDF-OI,” it said.

IDF-OI also conducted an outreach in UAE in October 2015 as a result of which many overseas Indians made commitments to funding projects especially those under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The board meeting was attended by prominent Indians and NRIs including Yusuff Ali, Subhash Jindal, B K Agnihotri,Ashok Chowgule, Ritu Beri and Bindeshwar Pathak.

Senior officials from Ministries of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Niti Aayog and Finance were also present.

11-Year-Old Indian-Origin Girl Gets Top Score in Mensa

LONDON:  A 11-year-old Indian-origin girl, Anushka Binoy, is one of Britain’s brainiest students. She bagged the highest possible score in the IQ test of Mensa, the largest high IQ society in the world.

Binoy has joined the one per cent of all entrants to attain the highest mark in the Cattell III B paper supervised by Mensa, the society for people with high IQs.

Anushka scored 162 to gain membership of the exclusive society, where entry is reserved for Britain’s brainiest 2 per cent.

Proud father Binoy Joseph, Kerala-born IT consultant, said he always knew his daughter was smart but hadn’t realised quite how remarkable.

“She loves reading quite advanced books and she memorises a lot of what she reads, so I knew she was pretty special but I was amazed when we got the results back. We’re very proud of her,” he told Get West London.

“There was no pressure on her, there was no extra preparation, except to prepare for her 11+ examination. She loves reading quite advanced books and she memorises a lot of what she reads. So I knew she was pretty special but I was amazed when we got the results back. We’re very proud of her,” Joseph told HT.

Hailing from Kottayam district, Anushka’s family has been living in Isleworth in London in 2007. She is a student of St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Isleworth, west London counts tennis, swimming and playing the violin among her hobbies.

A Mensa spokesperson said it did not keep a record of members’ IQs so it was impossible to say how rare an achievement this is, but she said it was certainly “exceptional”.

Cattell III B has 150 questions, often assessing comprehension through passages of texts, while the maximum score that can be achieved is 161 for adults, and 162 for under-18s.

Both Hawking and Einstein are thought to have an IQ of 160.

Mensa is believed to be the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world. Membership is open to anyone who can demonstrate an IQ in the top 2 per cent of the population, measured by a recognised or approved IQ testing process.

Thank you @IndiaToday,“ wrote Priyanka on Twitter. The actress, photographed on the sets of ‘Quantico’, is seen in an orange prisoner outfit with handcuffs. Priyanka‘s acceptance (as the first Indian to play the lead on an American drama) in the mainstream is surely a milestone for Indians in American pop culture. So it is great to see her accomplishments being appreciated back home in India.

After years of being in the political wilderness, Congress made a spectacular comeback in Gujarat, taking control of the rural local bodies in a stunning blow to the BJP in an election seen as a referendum on the ruling party’s state and central leadership.

The Grand Old Party won an impressive 22 of 31 district panchayats, a huge jump from the single panchayat it had won in 2010. It also won more than 50 per cent of the state’s 231 talukas or block-level panchayats. The Congress has been buoyed by these results and its leaders say that the outcome will benefit the party in the Assembly elections in 2017. The Congress has been out of power in Gujarat since 1995 while the BJP has ruled since then, barring a two year period when Shankarsinh Vaghela was the chief minister.

The setback to the BJP in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah’s home state comes barely weeks after the party suffered an embarrassing defeat in the assembly polls in Bihar.

These are the first elections in Gujarat on this scale after Narendra Modi moved from the state to Delhi and the first real popularity test for chief minister Anandiben Patel after she took charge of Gujarat last year.

Anandiben Patel has faced major political trouble in the shape of a widespread agitation by members of the Patel community who want either want reservations in jobs for themselves or the quotas to completely be eliminated.

Anandiben Patel could feel somewhat relieved at the BJP’s performance in urban areas. Her party won all six municipal corporations including Ahmedabad and Surat, though it faced resistance from the Congress in Rajkot.

The BJP also won more than 40 of the 56 municipalities where elections were held, including in Viramgam, where 22-year-old politician Hardik Patel, leader of the Patel agitation hails. A call by Hardik Patel to vote against the BJP seems to have not had much impact.

In the urban areas, the BJP retained control over Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar municipal corporations, though the Congress put up a tough fight at several places.

The BJP attributed its loss in rural areas to the Patidar agitation.

“The BJP has done work in rural areas. But with the kind of social engineering done by the Congress of late, the results for the BJP are below expectations,” said the party’s state vice-president IK Jadeja.
“This is an overall mandate in favour of the Congress. Even in urban areas, with increased number of seats, we can say the Congress has been widely accepted,” said Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki.

In Delhi, senior leader Ahmed Patel, who is political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, said the BJP government was on its way out in Gujarat after the results.

  • Why Modi Needs To Speak Out

Why Modi Needs To Speak Out

The attacks this year on rationalists by fundamentalist groups and right-wing religious groups are highly deplorable. It is obvious that all is not well in India. Something is going wrong, and it is clearly evident where the wrong is.

But firstly, we need to analyze the political reasons for the current climate of intolerance in the country.

PM Modi’s aggressive approach to economic development and prosperity has become a thorn for opposition parties in India. Some of the politicians within his own Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are envious of his growing international image and popularity. Additionally, some non-state actors and vested interests are creating the confusion in India, as to what is intolerant, who is intolerant and why.

Why the government should rise up to the challenge.

    Authors Are Literary Soldiers

As blood is important to flow in arteries for humans, ink is important to flow in pens for authors. Lack of freedom of expression stifles creativity. Authors are the soldiers of the literary world. As soldiers fight to defend and protect the country from external forces, authors are soldiers who fight for the protection of their freedom of expression from internal forces who endeavor to create a climate of terror and distrust in the society. Additionally, literature is the mirror of the society and writers are the soldiers. As the uniformed soldiers protect national boundaries the literary soldiers protect the internal system by voicing their views and opinions.

Rabindranath Tagore returned the knighthood to the British government in the wake of Jallianwalabagh massacre as a mark of protest. Hence, protests create awareness in the society and correct the leaders to govern well as per the aspirations and expectations of the people. We must respect protests as they raise the irregularities in the democratic system. We must remember that it is not evil that causes destruction, but it is the tolerance towards evil that is the real culprit. Albert Einstein has rightly remarked, “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.”

Hence, authors, intellectuals, and philosophers must not remain as mute spectators to irregularities as they are the source of ideas and insights in any society. They play a crucial and constructive role to keep the societies in order. They are the bridge between the government and the people. They are the brain behind several revolutions in the history who provided direction to the rulers during crises. Because of these reasons, the intellectuals, philosophers and authors are included as advisories and consultants for various organizations and boards. The government also takes their services as advisories as and when required.

The onus lies with the government to ensure freedom of expression and the right to dissent which are the hallmarks of democracy. It must not treat the present protest as a manufactured dissent. It must not suppress the views of people as they provide the right feedback to the government, not the political parties in opposition. Since the opposition parties have a political agenda and strategies to pull down the government, given the fact that they too want to come to power in the next election, the parties in power must listen to the pulse of the people and make decisions accordingly to ensure a vibrant democracy.

Modi Must Rise To The Challenge

Modi must not remain a mute spectator to the unprecedented protests and dissents in India. He must rise to the challenge to crush the forces of intolerance. He must reinvent his image from a Hindu leader to a people’s leader. People trusted him and gave him spectacular mandate which he must respect. He must walk his talk, which Mann Ki Baat just can’t do. He should not become a puppet in the hands of his own party members and dance to the tunes of the fundamentalist forces from RSS. If the present climate of intolerance goes unchecked, it will become a major problem for him and the Indian democracy. He must rise above petty party politics to send a stern message to the intolerant religious forces in the country. He must condemn attacks immediately. He must lead a hard path to set the house in order. He must implore the intellectuals and authors to take back their awards to create a climate of tolerance in India. He needs to speak out.

    Conclusion
Indian culture teaches tolerance, preaches tolerance and practices tolerance. There are only a few disgruntled politicians and people with religious connections who are creating havoc in India currently. The leaders at the top must send their stern message to these disgruntled elements whenever any atrocities occur without any fear or favour. It helps check the climate of intolerance in the bud, and we can avoid the present spiraling of returning of awards by authors and intellectuals.

Indian religious leaders must avoid their irresponsible utterances to create a climate of tolerance and goodwill. In a democracy, all citizens have the right to express their opinions, but not to indulge in violence. India’s greatest strength is to absorb criticism and evolve accordingly.

To summarize, Indian democracy is very strong as it weathered several storms including the Emergency during Indira Gandhi era, riots on Sikhs in 1984, and the demolition of the Babri Masjid. India is a symbol of aspirations of more than a billion people and their aspirations can be accomplished only in a democratic society by celebrating diversity. Hence, all stakeholders must work hard to create a climate of tolerance to build a healthy democratic society and a strong nation. Jai Hind!

“We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity. We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion.” — Max de Pree

  • Another ‘intolerant’ day

New Delhi: ‘Intolerance’ – the dirty word of Indian politics has finally found its place in the parliamentary discussion.

But as usual, to no avail. Even before the learned members of the parliament could dwell on the subject, the left party MP, Mohammad Salim struck a deep chasm with the Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Singh was so livid, he demanded an instant apology from Salim. When the dust settled down and the parliamentary discourse started again, nothing substantial seemed to emerge barring the opponent bashing by both the ruling and opposition benches. At end of day one of the debate on intolerance, we all just know what has already been reiterated by most political parties, nothing more. Then why waste 2.25 cr rupees per day to hold this debate?

Since Bihar elections, “intolerance” has become the dirtiest word in politics. After 28 years of banning ‘The Satanic Verses’, the then home minister, P Chidambram, regretted the order issued by Rajiv Gandhi government. How one wonders, does this help the Congress today, which has been trying to use the “intolerance debate” to keep itself relevant in the current the political discourse?

Did, Chidambram seek permission from Congress President, Sonia Gandhi prior to critiquing late PM Rajiv Gandhi’s decision. Or was he shooting from the hip as is the current norm in Indian politics. The party distanced itself and now we have no clue as to what is official and what is a comment in personal capacity. The veil of secrecy that has always been the hallmark of Congress engulfs all.

Likewise, BJP, seems clueless. How does the party rein-in the Hindutava brigade, which has been vocal on its agenda, polices, aims and ultimate goal – one and only Hindu Rashtra. Can the party align itself with the proclaimed nationalists / hindu protagonists or is the party still committed to the plank of development which propelled the BJP to power in the face of Modi wave in 2014. The ruling party seems highly confused on its own agenda and goals to pursue.

After all which BJP leader won’t desire, a Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uniform Civil code and abrogation of article 370 from the constitution? But then, votes were not sought on these issues. Votes were sought on the plank of corruption-free development which will truly reflect the economic might of Elephantine India.

While the ruling elite are in a bind, the people seem to be the victims of ceaseless debate in newspapers, television and countless news portals.

What to do is the Hobbesian choice…

Flipkart posts over Rs 2,000-crore loss in discount war & Big Billion Day Sale

MUMBAI: Flipkart posted a loss of about Rs 2,000 crore in the year ended March 2015, amounting to a fifth of its rapidly rising sales, as the country’s largest online retailer spent heavily to fund discounts to win customers and stay ahead of rivals Snapdeal and Amazon India while investing in back-end operations.

Flipkart Internet, which runs the consumer-facing portal, registered a net loss of Rs 1,096.4 crore, while that of Flipkart India, the wholesale arm, was Rs 836.5 crore, according to a Registrar of Companies filing on Monday. A year ago, the units had a combined loss of Rs 715 crore. Combined sales trebled to Rs 10,390 crore as reported last month. A Flipkart spokesperson declined to comment on the company’s financials. Last month’s numbers came from its annual MGT-07 return that lists sales and net worth. The latest data is from the complete standalone financial statement that Flipkart has filed.

India’s leading online marketplace may need to keep sustaining losses as it seeks to win market share by offering the best prices. “Flipkart could post between 35-50% of its sales as operating loss due to its high logistics cost and discounting,” said Ruchi Sally, director at retail consultancy Elargir Solutions. “The only way to reduce (this) is to diversify in higher-margin product categories such as apparel and home.”

“The current model of Flipkart doesn’t make any economic sense as any company selling goods below manufacturing cost without any margin will always attract customers. But a sustainable business can’t run like this and Flipkart needs to look for alternate revenue models such as advertising and data selling to make money,” said the CEO of a leading retail group.

“Flush with cash, firms could so easily develop expensive habits such as embarking on costly and perhaps undifferentiated customer acquisition strategies and too quickly elevating their fixed-cost structures, which may be difficult to wind back when circumstances change,” said Viju George of JP Morgan. India’s ecommerce market is set to rise to $103 billion by FY20 from $26 billion now, according to Goldman Sachs.

  • Turkey president Erdogan hits back at Russia after being accused of buying oil from ISIS

Turkey president Erdogan hits back at Russia after being accused of buying oil from ISIS

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Russia of “slander” over Moscow’s allegations Turkey had bought oil from Islamic State (IS) jihadists in Syria. “No one has a right to engage in slander against Turkey by saying that Turkey is buying oil from Daesh (IS),” Erdogan said in comments broadcast by Turkish television on a visit to Qatar. He was speaking after the Russian defence ministry claimed Erdogan and his family were involved in the illegal oil trade with IS, raising the stakes in a week-long standoff after Turkey shot down a Russian war plane on the Syrian border.

Erdogan reaffirmed that he would resign if the allegations were proven to be true and appeared to suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin should also consider his position. “I won’t stay in the seat of president for even one minute if Russia proved its claims. But those who spread this slander shouldn’t retain their seats either.””Turkey has not lost its moral values so as to buy oil from a terrorist organisation,” he added.

Erdogan added that Turkey had no intention of escalating the crisis and said the two countries still have potential for cooperation. “We will use whatever diplomatic language international diplomacy requires. We don’t want this problem to hurt our current relations or potential any further.”

  • Russia hits back at Turkey

    Russia hits back at Turkey

Since the shootdown of a Russian Su-24 by the Turkish Air Force on the 24th of November, Russia has escalated its bombing campaign in Syria against rebel groups in the north of Syria, including ones the US calls ‘moderate forces’.

Some of these groups have the backing of the US & Turkey and have been actively fighting against both the Assad regime and ISIS for some time.

Russia is striking back after a “stab in the back by an accomplice to terrorists” by changing the “game” in Syria.

Ankara never received international backing for a safe zone across its border, but Russia has now ruled that out.

The deployment of S-400 anti-air missiles means Russia has effectively imposed a no-fly zone over Syria.

Aside from indirect military deployments, Russia has been hitting back at Turkey in other ways, such as arresting Turkish businessmen, banning Russian football clubs from signing Turkish players and seizing Turkish cargo ships. The Russian government has even gone so far as to pursue economic sanctions against Turkey, and discouraging Russian tourists from visiting.

Moscow’s retaliation is not just about severing economic and diplomatic ties. It is pursuing a policy that could tie Turkey’s hands in Syria.

Moscow seems to be moving closer to a group that has been the US-led coalition’s main ground force in Syria – a group which Turkey, itself a member of that coalition, calls “terrorists”.

The Syrian Kurdish forces (YPG) is a US-backed Kurdish group that has pushed the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) back from areas along the border with Turkey.

In an attempt to change the solely “Kurdish face” of anti-ISIL ground troops, it aligned with some Arab brigades to form “the Syria Democratic Forces” (SDF).

No doubt a further strengthened YPG will anger Turkey, which has long feared that Kurdish autonomy in northern Syria would stir up similar sentiments among its own Kurdish population.

The SDF are now engaged in a fierce battle with Turkey-backed opposition factions in what is considered to be an important corner of Syria – the northern countryside of Aleppo.
To be more specific: the area west of the Euphrates River, which Turkey calls a red line.

The SDF captured some opposition-controlled towns close to the Turkish border of Kilis – known in Syria as Bab al-Salameh, an important lifeline for rebel groups.

In the latest salvo in the war of words between the two countries,Russia publishes ‘proof’ Turkey’s Erdogan is smuggling Isis oil across border from Syria

Russia has unveiled what it describes as proof that Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his family have benefited from the illegal smuggling of oil from Isis-held territory.

Moscow defence ministry officials released satellite images they claim shows columns of tanker trucks loading with oil at an installation controlled by Isis in Syria, before crossing the border into Turkey.

Footage was also sent out by the Kremlin that purported to show a flow of lorries crossing the Turkey-Syria border with no restrictions at the Reyhanli checkpoint.

Russia officials did not specify what direct evidence they had of the involvement of Mr Erdogan and his family, an allegation the Turkish president has vehemently denied.

Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s deputy defence minister, said: “Turkey is the main consumer of the oil stolen from its rightful owners, Syria and Iraq.

“According to information we’ve received, the senior political leadership of the country – President Erdogan and his family – are involved in this criminal business.”

Mr Antonov admitted that he may have been “too blunt” in levelling the allegations, adding: “In the West, no one has asked questions about the fact that the Turkish president’s son heads one of the biggest energy companies, or that his son-in-law has been appointed energy minister. What a marvellous family business.”

Sania Mirza counters MP government’s charges

NEW DELHI (TIP): Seeking to counter charges levelled against her by the Madhya Pradesh government, tennis star Sania Mirza on Thursday issued a statement justifying the need for a chartered plane to attend the central Indian state’s annual sports awards ceremony. Reports emerged earlier this week that the 29-year-old had asked for a chartered plane and a make-up kit worth Rs.75,000 to attend the function on Saturday which was postponed to Dec 1.

When the demands were heard, state Sports Minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia declined to meet them and instead brought in chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand as the chief guest for the event.

  • HWL Final: Inspired India beat Great Britain 2-1 to enter semis

HWL Final: Inspired India beat Great Britain 2-1 to enter semis

RAIPUR (TIP): Leaving behind their disappointing league campaign, India produced an inspired performance to upstage World No.4 Great Britain 2-1 and enter the semi-finals of the Hockey World League (HWL) Final at the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Stadium on Thursday.

As it happened: India vs Great Britain

World No. 6 India came into the match as underdogs having finished last in Pool B with just one point. Great Britain, on the other hand, were touted as favourites as they topped Pool A with two wins and a draw.

But having faced a lot flak in the last few days for their inconsistent showing in the league stage, the Indians came out with purpose even though Great Britain had the better share of ball possession and circle entries.

India secured just one penalty corner in the match which was beautifully converted by VR Raghunath in the 19th minute before Talwinder Singh doubled the lead in the 39th minute.

It was not easy for the Indians as Great Britain fought hard and tried to forge a comeback into the match in the fourth and final quarter when Simon Mantell scored from a penalty corner in the 52nd minute.

Great Britain earned as many as six penalty corners in the match but made use of just one.

India started on a bright note and enjoyed the majority of the possession in the opening two quarters.

The Indians looked far more organised and coordinated and attacked the rival citadel with purpose.

It was India who had the first shy at the goal when Dhramavir Singh’s brilliant solo run from the left flank found out Talwinder Singh inside the box but the striker messed up the opportunity. Two minutes later, Great Britain had the first real scoring opportunity when they earned their first penalty corner after Jasjeet Singh Kular found the feet of his own defender Raghunath inside the box while trying to clear the ball.

The resultant try from Ian Sloan was saved by Indian custodian PR Sreejesh and the rebound was shot wide by Tim Whiteman. India’s persistent attack earned them their first penalty corner in the 19th minute and Raghunath made no mistake in give his side the lead with a powerful low flick to the right of Great Britain goalkeeper Harry Gibson.

India created a few more opportunities thereafter but the strike force, in particular Ramandeep Singh continued to falter again and again as the hosts went into the breather with a one goal advantage.

Olympic about country, not individual: Sushil Kumar

NEW DELHI (TIP): Narsingh Yadav’s bronze-winning performance at the Las Vegas World Championship in September this year led to speculations in the wrestling fraternity as he earned a Rio Olympics quota place in two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar’s weight category (75kg). However, Sushil himself is clear that Olympics is about representing the country and not about an individual. “Narsingh did a splendid job at the World Championship and I have congratulated him for his achievement. Who goes to Rio is federation’s call but Olympics is about representing your country and not about an individual. So, the best man should be selected be it me or Narsingh,” Sushil said on the sidelines of an event on December 2 .

Sushil, who has been out of action due to a shoulder injury since his silver-winning performance at the 2012 London Olympics, underwent 20-day training in Georgia and is confident of returning to form. “I am training really hard for the Olympics. I have every one’s blessings and that motivates me to come back stronger every time. Given our record at international tournaments, everyone has hopes of good performance from wrestling. (PTI)
